Sum up!
In this paper
Task one :
Do you feel afraid of speaking publicly ? And
why ?
Task two:
Why public speaking is important in your own
opinion ?
Possible answers :
Task one : if your answer to task 1 was yes,
don’t worry because many survies conducted
in USA showed that the Americans ‘ greatest
fear is firstly public speaking then death and
snakes come in the list …
Task two:
Public speaking is important for many reasons:
 influencing the world around you,
 developing leadership skills,
 becoming a thought leader.
A.Structuring Your presentation
1.Inroduction:
 trough the introduction try to grab your audience’s attention and
set the scene.
 There are many thechnics to achieve this goal:
a.Asking rhetorical questions
b.Giving an anecdote
c.Providing a relevent and interesting fact.
 Then , outline the valuable information that you like
your audience to gain by the end of the talk.
 Clarity of the objective behind your
presentation encourage your audience to follow you .
2.The body:
 In the body try to organize your material
( explainations,illustrations,examples… )
 Be aware that people won’t remember too many
points.
 Once you decided on the key points ,organise
them in a logical order:
 Chronological order.
 Problem-solution based.
 Simple –complex based.
 Use supporting information and evidence .
3.Conclusion:
 There are various ways of concluding a presentation
including:
 Summarising your main points.
 Making recommendations.
 Asking for questions,getting feedback.
 Asking for commenting particular actions.
Finally, always remember that your audience recalls
easily the beginning and the end of the presentation
over the detail in the middle.
1-Types of delivery:
 a.Impromptu:
 It is when the speaker delievers a talk without a prior
planning and is often the least preferred method.
 Sometimes however,we don’t have an opportunity to
prepare and are called on to speak for short. So ,just
write some notes on a card and start talking but try to
make your presentation conversational and relax.
 This method is used for example when paying
someone a tribute and asked to say a word about
him…
B.Delivering Your Presentation
b.Extemporaneous:
This involves cue cards or slides on which
you summerise the main points which you then discuss.
 c.Memorised:
This approach involves learning a manuscript
by heart .This is more difficult when giving
longer presentations to memorise.However,a
useful tip is to memorise the first few lines to
get you started.
B.Delivering Your Presentation
d.Read:
 This involves speaking from a prepared
manuscript. However, while this can feel the
safest option, try to use it as a guide as far as
possible rather than reading it word for word.
 You can combine between all montioned parts
above.
C.Delivering Your Presentation
3.Some tips on making a successful talk:
•Use appropriate language and avoid jargon .If your
audience do not understand most of what is being talked
about ,they will detached.
•Be paced ,don’t speak neither slowly nor very quickly
because speaking slowly is a recipe to boredom .However,
speaking very quickly may disturb the audience.
•Use visual aids without placing them centre stage .Even the
best of these are only aids to assist the speaker.
•Emphasize key points verbally ,non –verbally through
listing key points (e.g It is vital that you recognise…); non
verbally (e.g:gestures,changes in posture,position) and
vocally(speed of delivery,tone of voice).
C.Delivering Your Presentation
3.Some tips on making a successful talk:
• Be concrete and precise, rather than appearing
vague and indefinite .
•Be dynamic :Use vocal variation and non –verbal
animation .If you are not enthusiastic how can you
expect to motivate others.
•Be varied: mix talk with graphs ,slides or pieces of
video.
•Seem natural .this may take some time and
practice.
4.Body language comand.
•Remember the importance of non-verbal communication
while skills such as concise expression of clear English ,logical
association of ideas and organised speech are important, they
do not ensure that effective communication will take place.
•Behave enthusiastically ,make and maintain eye contact ,smile
,act ‘as if ‘ you are confident and relaxed (even if you do not
feel it ) and make your introduction without reading from your
notes too much .
•The manner of speech is also important .As well as ensuring
that your voice can be heard by the furthest member of the
group ,speak clearly and at appropriate speed.
C.Delivering Your Presentation
 5.Overcoming your fears!
 As we have seen,a common fear is that the
presentation will result in some sort of
disaster,leaving us feeling embarrassed or
humiliated .However, those fears are only our
imagined ‘worst case scenario’’
 So,to overcome such situation try these tips:
1.Accept that is perfectly normal to feel
nervous or anxiousto some extent.
2.Prepare well.
3.Be realistic and set reasonable goals.
 5.Overcoming your fears!
4.Use relaxation exercises such as deep breathing
5.Behave as if you are feeling confident.
6.Use other non-verbal behaviours to appear
confident.
 In this paper I’ve tried to cover one of the
greatest chalenges for the most of humans
which is preparing and presenting an oral
presentation and in these last slides I’ll give a
summary about the whole content:
 So, to prepare a good presentation what you
have to do is just :
 Determine your topic and write down an
outline.
 Structure your paper through an introduction,
main body and conclusion.
 Choose a method of delivery
(e.g:impromptu,extemoraneaous,memorised
or read)that is least stressful for you .
 Remember your non verbals make and
maintain eye contact and create a sense of
interest in the listener.
