The Bicycle Thief is a deeply moving neo realist films of the 1940 s focused on the state of Italy in the aftermath of WWII, which depicts one man s loss of
faith and his struggle to maintain personal dignity in poverty and bureaucratic indifference. The director use neorealism in this film to show the working class
life, set in the culture of poverty, and with the implicit message that in a better society wealth would be more evenly distributed. The majority of the movie is
focused around the bicycle. The main character Antonio Ricci is having a hard time finding a job but all of that changes after he own a bicycle, which was later

Martin Luther And John Calvin Essay
The Renaissance was a time where individuals questioned numerous aspects of European culture and society, which have collectively broadened the
worldview from medieval to modern. As such, a new wave of theological thinking emerged from the dissent of the late Medieval church, and this is commonly
known as the Reformation. Martin Luther is often credited as the Great Man whose Ninety Five Thesis a provocative set of questions targeting the Church set
in motion the pivotal process of religious change, known as Protestantism. The radical change from medieval Christianity to modern Christianity is often
confined to the ideas of two important men: Martin Luther and John Calvin. It is also important to note the vastness of time that the Renaissance dominated
compared to the short period within 1517 to 1559 that these two reformers lived. Yet without them, without the challenging and convincing religious
arguments and questions they put forward justification by faith alone, the doctrine of double predestination the religious change as seen in the sixteenth
century, as well as even the name of the movement could ve been very different.
In the year 1509, the year in which John Calvin was born, Martin Luther had already begun spreading his teachings. By the age of eight, Martin Luther had
publicized his Ninety Five Thesis and the German Reformation had already seen the culmination of Luther s teachers and influence. During the time of Calvin
s first published book, Luther

The Girl Next Door Summary
In The Girl Next Door Megan and her sister Susan have to move in with their Aunt Ruth and there three cousins, Willie, Ralphie, and Donny. Ruth allows her
son and the neighborhood boys to come to the house to drink and smoke. While the boys are over Ruth abuses Megan, physically and emotionally in front of
them. Megan is called a whore and is starved. Ruth beats up Susan and blames her beatings on Megan. The only person who tries to help Megan and Susan is
David, the next door neighbor. One day Megan goes to the police and as punishment she is put in the cellar and is hung from the rafters. They all play this
game of confession with her. Since she does not play along with the game they strip her, blindfold her, and put a gag in her mouth. Ruth invites all of the kids
in the neighborhood to the cellar so they can burn, beat and cut her for their own amusement. The next day Megan gets raped by her cousin Willie while
everyone watched. David tried to leave, but was forced to watch. Ruth heats up a needle and carves I fuck, fuck me on to Megan s stomach. Ruth decides in
order for Megan to never want to be with a guy and for no guy to want her she needs to give Megan a clitorectomy with a blowtorch. Megan died from all the
injuries caused by Ruth. The next morning David starts a fire in the cellar to get people s attention. Ruth sees that there is a fire and goes in to the cellar. David
then beats Ruth until she s dead with a crutch. A police officer arrived and took Susan to go get help. The end shows Willie and Donny being arrested. Willie s
personality is just like Ruth s. He is taught and shown how to disregard woman and to take everything from them. Since he is taught and shown this behavior
he thinks it is acceptable to cause harm to another human being. He has the personality trait of being malicious. His sole being in the movie is to cause harm to
Megan and Susan and to make their life as unpleasant as possible. Willie was in the adolescence stage in the movie which means he was forming his own
identity and seeking independence. This is illustrated when Willie is not told to act in such way towards his cousin, but does anyway. He is forming his own
decisions that are not based off of anyone around him

Honey Bees Decline
There are many problems with bees currently. One of those problems includes the decline of the bee population and their hives. On the other hand there are
many good things that are related to bees. An example of this is the pollination of plants by bees. If bees did not exist then there would be a drastic decrease in
most of the food that people eat on a daily basis. Bees are kept for several reasons. Honey bees are mostly kept for commercial use or just a hobby. These bees
are called Apis mellifera, or European honey bees. These bees have a presence all over the world. They produce honey as well as pollinate crops. The most
popular subspecies are Italian bees, A. mellifera ligustica. These bees are usually orange or bright yellow and can amass a sizeable population in the spring.
Their way of feeding is to rob other colonies of their honey. Another popular bee is named Apis mellifera scutellata, or the killer bee as most people know it, it
is also known as the Africanized bees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are named killer bees because of the aggressive attitude they have. Their venom is powerful enough to kill a living creature if there are hundreds of them.
Some beekeepers prefer africanized bees over normal honey bees because they tend to produce a lot more than honey bees. Some even call them the producers
of liquid gold . The africanized queen can mate with both European and Africanized drones. Doing so makes some the produced queens Africanized and the
others European. Because africanized queens leave their cells one day before the European queens they will kill the other queens. This will cause a what once
was a European colony to become an Africanized colony. This can cause problems as Africanized bees are more likely to migrate if their food supply is low.
They are also very defensive of their hive and will guard them with extreme aggression.

Effects Of Poverty In Togo
Poverty influences Togolese and Americans life. Togo is one of the third world countries in West Africa, and its poverty is due to the lack of steady jobs which
will bring a reliable income to the household. There are no jobs at all in the country, and the few enterprises do not have enough capability to hire; all those
conditions develop homeless and shantytowns because people cannot afford a suitable roof. Likewise, the United States which is one of the richest countries in
the world still fell poverty in some part of the population. There is no such lack of jobs but poverty still exists. The poverty in the youth population in Togo and
the United States are almost the same.

Over here, due to the winter season, it is hard to live in a place where there is no heat reason why there is a more social center for homeless; Jargowsky and
Bane stated that homeless people became more and more visible in urban areas. Job availability has an impact on poverty in Togo because the number of jobs
available is exceedingly low; the lack of companies that will hire people to work creates unfavorable conditions which affect considerably those who are
seeking jobs. How is it possible to get out of poverty without a job? Comparing to my country Togo, this question could not be a topic over here where there
are at least some jobs. Most Americans find their way out of poverty through the acquisition of a steady job that provides them an income. Besides the
differences in shantytown and jobs availabilities in Togo and in the United States, the poverty in the household is another critical point which has an impact on
family s life. In my country, some families struggle to afford their children school fees due to the lowest of their income. There is a lot of illiterates in my
country because the private and the public school are not free. In the United States, at least the public school is free all way to high school, and everyone who
wants can be educated. In another hand, the United States poverty caused divorce in families because of the lack of money that can help to buy what

Quality In Healthcare
Individual Assignment #1
The most important measure of success in any kind of organization is quality. Quality is extremely crucial in all organizations whether it is within healthcare or
not because, it is a symbol that is representing the main image of an organization. A quality of an organization is based on the facts that they are always
remarkably meeting the expectations of their customers, if not even doing more. It also means that such organization is always striving to find the unsatisfied
areas of the customers in which to improve. When every organization ensures that it is producing quality products or services, this not only embellishes the
overall look of the company, but it attracts others to get involved with such place no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fourth aim timely is also very important, an outstanding quality facility should not have customers waiting too long before being provided care, not only
will that contribute to losing customers but it could result severely in worse cases such as deaths. Lastly, health care organization should be efficient, which
means they should seek to remove waste from the facilities as soon as possible and the cost of services should be capable to afford. And the sixth tells us that
health care should be equitable, this means to be known for a great quality in a health care organization, it must accept all kinds of people, it must not
discriminate but strive to give the same high quality care to everyone who comes

Mr. Palomar By Italo Calvino
Mr. Palomar exhibits a unique interesting character throughout the entire book Mr. Palomar by Italo Calvino. The odd slipper (Page 99 101), specifically
addresses a lot of Mr. Palomar s perspectives on simple topics, it clearly shows that Mr. Palomar is a deep thinker and it conveys his habit of over complicating
matters that are supposed to be simple, it is effective in highlighting the image that Mr. Palomar is a character who tends to isolate himself from the world by
questioning it and examining every aspect of our being and stance in society.
The odd slipper (Page 99) is about Mr. Palomar receiving a mismatched shoe while shopping in Bazaar. This passage displays the sudden division of Mr.
Palomar s seemingly strong perspective into two different, opposing viewpoints. One is that at first, Mr. Palomar believed that by purchasing a mismatched
shoe, he had started a chain of events that would cause consequences in the future:
centuries can go by before the consequences of this mistake affect another visitor to that ancient bazaar. Every process of disintegration in the order of the
world is irreversible; the effects, however, are hidden and delayed by the dust cloud of the big numbers, which contains virtually limitless possibilities of new
symmetries, combinations, pairings. (Page 100)
By saying this, Mr. Palomar means that any changes in the world that bring about disorder are irreversible, but their consequences may actually be hidden until
the very end.

Religion In Japan
Our group separated the research on Japan into sections of history, current Religious Education (RE) in schools, demographics, and government/current
policies. There were two main religions that surrounded Japan: Shinto and Buddhism. In addition, two other religions, Confucianism and Christianity, also
contributed a considerate amount to the RE in Japan. The four major time periods involving RE in the history of Japan were Pre Meiji, Meiji Restoration
Period, wartime era, and post WWII (Inoue 115). There were religious tensions during the Tokugawa shogunate era that which have led up to the

Shinto is the belief of kami, spirits, deities that exist as things in nature, such as trees or streams, watching over the humans on Earth. To the Japanese, Shinto
was not particularly a religion but something that is part of their lives, like another part of the natural world, albeit a part of enormous power (BBC: History 1).
So, in a sense, religion actually came into Japan in the 6th century, when Buddhism, founded by Prince Shotoku (571 622), was transmitted to Japan from
China (Web Japan 2). After the birth of Buddhism into Japan, Shinto faiths and traditions took on Buddhist elements, and later, Confucian ones (BBC: History
1). The Emperor Shomu (701 756) adopted Buddhism as the official state religion and build a huge statute of Buddha to commemorate this occasion. Even
still, the coexistence of Buddhism and Shinto continued (Web Japan 2). Since Buddhism and Shinto were the main beliefs in Japan, during the time in the 16th
century, religious tensions with Christianity grew when Christian missionaries tried to convert many of the Japanese (BBC: History 2). Due to such actions of
forced conversions, Christianity was seen as a threat in Japan and in which made Buddhism and Shinto the dominant religions in the 17th century partly
because an anti Christian measure forced every Japanese person to register at a Buddhist temple and to pay for the privilege of being a Buddhist (BBC: History

The Fragility Of Life In Grace Paley s Samuel
This is my response to Grace Paley s short story titled Samuel. Throughout the story, Paley uses language to generate a healthy dialogue about the fragility of
life by comparing the thoughts and reactions of all the characters in the story leading up to and following Samuel s tragic death. The story conveys the story of
four young boys and their adventure on a subway one day. The story chronicles the thoughts of the passengers on the train in New York City, and their actions
leading up and following the unfortunate death of the main character Samuel. At the start of this story Paley tells the reader Some boys are very tough. They re
afraid of nothing. (Paley). By using words like brave and tough, Paley tells the reader what characteristics were ideal for the four boys featured in this story.
She goes on to say, They are the ones who climb a wall and take a bow at the top. Not only are they brave on the roof, but they create plenty of noise in the
darkest part of the cellar where even the super hates to go. They also jiggle and hop on the platform between the locked doors of the subway cars. (Paley)
Paley connects those two words to give the reader a vague idea of what Samuel and his friends view about death. Paley conveys that the boys were unaware
that death was looming of them. Their goal in jumping on the subway car was to prove they were fearless. The boys actions in the subway car show that their
goal was to prove there that

Hagar Leaving Abraham s House In Genesis
Hagar and Ishmael s story in Genesis is often understood in the light of Isaac being the rightful heir to Abraham s inheritance and legacy through the
abandonment and expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael. At first glance, the story portrays Hagar as an outsider, an Egyptian servant, who is beneath Sarah, the
mistress; thus, this difference in position justifies Hagar and Ishmael s abandonment from Abraham s house. A closer look at the story evokes the reader s
sympathy for Hagar and Ishmael s unfair treatment since Ishmael is the firstborn son. This subtle detail drawn between the lines suggests that there an
underlying message in this narrative. In this paper, I will discuss how the two accounts of Hagar leaving Abraham s house in Genesis 16 and ... Show more

In the first account, the text states that Sarah s inability to bear Abraham a child led her to take matters into her own hands by giving her Egyptian maidservant,
Hagar, to Abraham as a concubine so that he can bear him a child through Hagar. After Hagar and Abraham cohabited, she became pregnant, which caused
Sarah to be disturbed by her status in Hagar s eyes. Sarah complained to Abraham and he told her to deal with it as she thinks fit as Hagar is her maidservant.
This caused Sarah to treat Hagar harshly and resulted in Hagar fleeing from her master s house to run from Sarah. An angel of YHWH found her near a spring
on the road to Shur and told her to return to her master s house and submit to the harsh treatment, while also instilling (?) some blessings to her. This narrative
ended with the birth of Ishmael when Abraham was eighty six years old. The second text in Genesis 21 begins with the fulfillment of God s promise to Sarah
with the birth of Isaac when Abraham was a hundred years old. Sarah was delighted with Isaac s birth and was laughing at the people who mocked her for her
inability to bear Abraham a son. During Isaac s feast, she saw Ishmael playing with Isaac, which saddened her and she demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be
cast out as she did not want Ishmael, the son of a slave, to share the same inheritance as Isaac. Abraham was greatly distressed by Sarah s request, but God told
him to not worry and follow Sarah s demand for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be continued for you (Gen. 21:12) and He will bless Ishmael by
[making] a nation of him (21:13). The next morning, with God s instructions, Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away and gave them some bread and water.

Rousseau s Views On Private Property
Henri Aleksi Vanhanen Midterm Exam 11.6.2015 PART A 1. The quote was made by Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712 1778) in his creation On Social Contract
(1762) (Rousseau, Social Contract, 4). Rousseau s discourse on private property can be understood as a response to John Locke s theories regarding property
and especially to Locke s labor theory and the government s role in it (assumption based on the similarity of their discourse). According to Locke s labor
theory, a man s labor defines his right to own something (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 16) and that one of the government s top priorities is to
guarantee inheritance of private property for those who have and own something (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 37). The theory also contains the
aspect that one can own something if he improves it (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 15). In the concept of the society and government s duties Locke
and Rousseau have different ideas. Locke states that the most important social contract is made between the people and that the government should not impose
its grip upon things that the people are capable of solving together themselves (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 4). For Rousseau the state of nature is not
a constant state of war (Rousseau, Social Contract, 4). This explains why Rousseau says that war cannot arise from personal relations. Rousseau s basic idea
behind the quote is to state that the civilization s creation and idea of private property and division of

After less than 30 minutes of play the under 20 Chinese national football team vacated the pitch in protest, signaling an early end to the first in a series of 16

It is doubtful the protesters knew just how impactive and successful their act would become.
The incident took on heightened international significance when Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang made note of the game during a press briefing.

themselves correctly, demanding that German authorities take action against the flag of advocates of Tibetan independence. The German authorities should be

Analysis Of Vega V. Sports Bar Grill
Vega Bogeda s employee was probably acting outside the scope of his employment when he posted the video of Underwood on YouTube.
An employer is liable for the actions of his employee unless they fall outside the scope of employment. Williams v. Community Drive In Theater, Inc., 520
P.2d 1296, [p. 1297] (Kan. 1974). To fall inside the scope, the employee s actions must (1) arise naturally from the course of their jobs and (2) intend to further
employer s interest and not done for personal reasons. Daugherty v. Allee s Sports Bar Grill, 260 S.W.3d 869, [p. 873] (Mo. Ct. App. 2008).

The employee filmed Underwood within the scope of his employment, but posting was outside the scope. The plaintiff alleges invasion of privacy and damage
to reputation, but the harms of both claims come from the act of sharing the video with others. Had the employee not shared the video, the plaintiff probably
would have no case for damage to her reputation as the events would have stayed between the two parties. Instead, he posted the video. Posting, rather than
filming, caused the plaintiff harm.
It is clear the employee acted within the scope while filming. As a service worker who often closes the store, an employee should have experience with
difficult customers late at night. As such, the situation fell within the normal course of his duties. The worker s main goal was not a personal motive, but to
close the store. He thought filming the plaintiff would incentive her to leave.
Posting falls outside the scope of employment for a few reasons. First, he posted the video to his personal account for the purposes of entertaining online
viewers. He also knew that Vega did not approve of him being on YouTube during work hours, but did so anyway. Finally, Vega noted embarrassing customers
did not benefit the business, but might ease personal annoyances to the worker, meaning the video helped the posting employee to the detriment his employer.
There are a couple of counterarguments to this interpretation. First, using Daugherty, one might

Cultural Reflection
Prior to taking this course, I had put very little thought into my culture let alone grappled with the fact that culture is far more complex than something that we
simply have. Early in the semester we touched upon the fact that culture is, in actuality, much more nuanced and is something practiced and experienced
differently on every scale and in every interaction throughout every person s lifetime. Upon completion of the course, an investigation into my own culture will
exemplify just that. First, looking at historical, cultural and family background, I will examine how my position within my unique family has shaped how I
approach the world around me. Here I will tie in an especially personal element that I feel shapes many parts of my cultural identity being the fact that I am
adopted. Next, an examination of the significance of travel, migration, and languages in my life builds on tradition, but reflects an identity that I have recently
taken on as an independent young adult outside of how I was raised. Then, I will touch upon how nationality and religion have been significant in my cultural
socialization. I will look at how I grapple with my nationality, and how generational pressures have led to conflicts resulting in growth, development, and
meaningful choices. Finally, looking closely at some of my most valued friendships, as well as the nature of my broader social life and life goals, I will argue
that they largely reflect elements mentioned earlier, especially

Legislation On Antibiotics
A letter to legislation on the use of antibiotics
Overtime, antibiotics have been favorable as well as negligent to society. Antibiotic usage is helpful to society because it kills and fights off bacteria in both
humans and animals. With an increase in antibiotic usage, these bacteria have become resistant to certain drugs which reduce the chance of the bacteria being
killed off and result in bacteria multiplying, causing increased harm to the infected. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013),
each year in the United States at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as
a result to these infections. Although multiple bacteria are antibiotic resistant, and those numbers will continue to rise, antibiotics should remain a staple in the
treatment of diseases, as opposed to abandoning their use which will cause an increase in the prevalence of bacterial infections. ... Show more content on

A) How did the Europe under the rule of the Charlemagne differ from Europe during the time of Constantine, and what did the title of emperor mean during
each period? Constantine and Charlemagne were two very different kinds of emperors with the same goal: unite their kingdom through Christianity. The key
difference between the two was their mindsets. Charlemagne was a militaristic ruler with an agenda, and Constantine was a diplomatic ruler with an
opportunity to bring the Christian church to power from scratch. Charlemagne used his militaristic power and might as well as his diplomatic talents to their

For beginners, the orthodox church believed in the consensus of god and maintaining the mystery and faith of Christianity while the roman catholics believed
in the laws and rules made and enforced by the pope. The orthodox church supports the belief in the holy trinity (the father, the son, and the holy spirit) while
the roman catholics believed in the Nicene creed, which believed in only the father and the son. In addition, the orthodox church followed other books in
addition to the holy bible, such as Esdras and 3 and 4 maccabees (classroom.synonym.com). One of the main differences between the two is that the roman
catholics believe in the original sin, which they believed was the eating of the forbidden apple by adam and eve. The orthodox church, however, believed that
instead of the eating of the forbidden apple leading to the original sin, the punishment for their ignorance to gods rules of the garden was death. This lead to the
orthodox church believing that jesus goal was to conquer death, while the roman catholics believed that he died for all our sins. Islam has a clear cut difference
between the other two. For starters, Islam believed not in jesus, but in a merchant and prophet name Muhammad who claimed to receive a revelation from god
and ordered everyone who believed in and followed him to kill all pagan worshipers in the name of god. While Christianity

learn about chemicals known to exist in the conventional foods we eat daily. Ever wonder why apples are so shiny? A coating of shellac is applied to apples to
give them a shiny coating, prolonging their shelf life, and prevent bruising. You might reconsider the next time you reach for the shiniest red apple and
remember to think about the pesticides that were used to make it that way. Being informed of the benefits of organic food versus those of conventional will
enable you to make the best decisions for you and your family.
Organic food is an alternative to conventional food. It is marketed as pure, wholesome and natural. Organic food is generally considered healthier than
conventional grown foods. People shopping for organic food usually do so to avoid the chemicals, not necessarily because organic products have more
nutrition.
There are little to no pesticides sprayed on organic food. While this does make the food taste fresher, it also means that it will spoil sooner. Unfortunately, this
increases costs to the consumer because it means it cost more money to get the produce more quickly to the market/grocery store. Surveys suggest that about
40% of Americans buy some organic food. (Potera) The higher cost of organic produce can have a negative impact and may put the organic diet out

Essay on The Many Versions of The Legend of King Arthur
The Many Versions of The Legend of King Arthur
There are countless versions of the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. Most English versions are based on Sir Thomas Malory s Le
Morte d Arthur, but where did these tales originate, and what different interpretations are there today? This essay seeks to examine the roots and different
renditions of the various legends circulating today. The first section deals with the origins of the legend. The second section speculates on who the real King
Arthur could have been. A comparison of several different versions, and suggestions of why they differ are given in the third section, and the conclusion
presents an analysis on the ambiguity of the legend.

He was also the first to use the name Camelot for Arthur s headquarters, and it was he who first told us of the Grail, though he didn t associate any religious

the romance, to the transmission of the stories of Arthur. (Britannia web page) In the early 13th century, the Vulgate Cycle is written, changing the stories from
verse to prose. The material begins to take on more historical and religious overtones, and here the idea that Mordred is the incestuous son ofArthur is
introduced (David Nash Ford web page). In the 15th century, Sir Thomas Malory s Le Morte de Arthur is published. It is the definitive English Athurian
romance (Britannia web page), and With one stroke of his pen, he transformed Arthur s Court from Dark Age obscurity to the height of middle age pageantry
(David Nash Ford web page). It is on this book that many of the modern versions are based, but by this time, it is mainly a work of literature, and there is little

War And Peace, By Nancy Scheper Hughes And Philippe
In an age of multiple overlapping crises involving public institutions, war, capital and law, we witness a normalization of violence in everyday life. Violence,
as defined by the World Health Organization is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a
group or community that may result in various harms ranging from psychological harm and deprivation to injury and death. From an anthropological
perspective, all dimensions of violence are shaped by cultural and social structures, ideas and ideologies.
In their publication titled Violence in War and Peace, Nancy Scheper Hughes and Philippe Bourgois suggest that expressions and repressions of violence are
sometimes so deeply embedded in broader socio cultural structures that they go unrecognized. According to Scheper Hughes and Bourgois, these
misrecognized and often invisible forms of violence racism, inequality and exclusion are often not disapproved of nor seen as deviant behavior but, are
generally applauded conventional social, economic and political norms (5). From these larger social, cultural, and political systems, violence derives its power
and meaning. Examining instances of violence in these ways, within their wider contexts of power and meaning, is critical for a variety of reasons. First, it
provides a foundation for understanding other forms of violence, such as interpersonal or gender based violence; second, it reveals that

Self-Efficacy And Empowerment. Introduction. Can Rephrasing
Self efficacy and Empowerment
Introduction
Can rephrasing our refusal statement help us achieve our goals? According to the study performed by Patrick Hagtvedt (2012), the answer is yes. The
resistance to temptation is vital for healthy eating, weight loss, as well as maintaining our commitment to any goal. Long term goals take the time to attain,
which provides us with ample opportunity to give in to our wants and desires . When this happens, we delay our progress. Many studies have been performed
on this subject; however, this is the first one to examine the linguistic approach of self talk or talking to oneself, using our internal forces, to assist us in
reaching that goal (Patrick, V., Hagtvedt, H., 2012). It proposes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Self efficacy is a complex concept which empowers us to do whatever we believe we can do, giving us self confidence, and enhancing our motivation (Carey
Forsyth, 2017). Fisher and Kridli (2014) define motivation as, A complex concept that includes the beliefs, values, and attitudes regarding the accomplishment
of a desired behavior or behaviors (P. 238, Para. 3). Furthermore, Patrick and Hagtvedt (2012) conceptualize empowerment as, A feeling of strength and
control that in turn may help motivate goal pursuit (P. 373, Para. 3). Patrick and Hagtvedt (2012) proposed that, Using the word don t rather than can t
represents two distinct types of refusal that differ in terms of what they implicitly connote about the consumer s commitment and attitude toward their goals (P.
371, Para. 2). Just as in the original study, my study seeks to demonstrate the use of self talk in creating empowerment in an individual, which will enhance the
resistance to temptation and motivate goal directed behavior (Patrick Hagtvedt, 2012, P. 372). In the prior study, quantitative analysis was performed using
ANOVA, Chi square, and binary logistic regression (Patrick Hagtvedt, 2012). The original study was performed without mention of participant recruitment,

Second Punic War Research Paper
From Rome s perspective the outcome of the Second Punic war can only be described as bittersweet. On the one hand Rome became master of the
Mediterranean, with secure lands encircling the entire sea and new resource rich territory in Hispania (Morey, 1901). On the other hand, much of the fertile
areas of the Italian homeland were destroyed completely (Morey, 1901). From the perspective of Carthage the outcome of the Second Punic war was less
uncertain.
The Second Punic War is better thought of as the Era of the Second Punic War, the thing occurred over the span of about 17 years from 218 to 201 BCE. This
was the final showdown between Carthage and Rome for control of the Mediterranean and the era of heroes and battles whose names we still know today,
Hannibal, War Elephants, the Scipios, the battle of Cannae are the most famous (Morey, 1901)
The overall arc of the Second Punic War was Carthage, led by Hannibal, invading the Italian peninsula from the North. Hannibal runs roughshod across Italy

Hispania is rich in natural resources, Numidia provided much needed additional armies and added cavalry to Rome s war chest. Rome was now an empire, and
even though her losses were substantial, the spoils were greater (Morey, 1901). Not everything was great for Rome though, huge tracts of the central and
southern Italian peninsula were destroyed, interrupting food and resource production for a generation (Morey, 1901). In spite of the cost to Rome, the foothold
in Hispania permitted the gradual gain of the entire Iberian Peninsula, and the additional population, riches and resources gave Rome what it needed to expand

When people who suffer from omniomania begin to feel anxious, nervous or depressed the go shopping to make themselves feel better, they get a high from
shopping, a high similar to that of drug addicts. It is believed that shopping provides a stimulant of beta endorphines in the brain, which give the person the
high feeling. People continue to shop to gain the euphoric feeling and then can become addicted to shopping. (Intili, 2004)
It is believed that about 6% of Americans have a shopping addiction; of the 6% 90% are women. To a shopping addict trips to the mall become the main way
to cope with stress, even when it is having a negative impact on the rest of their life. The addiction will affect their relationships and finances. (Omniomania:
Shopping Addiction, 2010) It is a never ending merry go round; the stress from relationships and finances just reinforces the urge to shop more in order to feel

The Influence Of Age, Work Experience, Education Level,...
Chapter 3: Methodology
The researcher conducted this quantitative research study to explore the influence of age, work experience, education level, and competence based
standardized entrance exam scores on whether a job applicant will pass a pre employment polygraph exam. While demand for qualified law enforcement
applicants has increased significantly, the pool of participants qualified for these positions has diminished (Wilson et al., 2010). In order to address this
developing issue, law enforcement employers need to understand how their hiring procedures affect employment outcomes. The polygraph is one hiring
procedure commonly used in the law enforcement field. While there has been some research exploring non physiological variable influences on integrity type
tests, there is a lack of research on non physiological variable influences on the polygraph test. As such, the researcher plans to explore possible influences on
pre employment polygraph exams. This study will contribute to the existing literature on integrity tests, which in turn will provide researchers and Human
Resource policy makers with additional data. These individuals may potentially use this data to streamline hiring processes for specialized law enforcement,
security, and government positions. This chapter will outline the research design and methodology proposed to be followed. First, the overall research design
will be justified. Next, the independent and dependent variables will be

Should Therapeutic Cloning Be Banned
There are two sides to the topic of cloning. One side believes it is unethical and should be banned. The other side believes the benefits and possibilities
outweigh the problems. The two most controversial types of artificial cloning are reproductive cloning, and therapeutic cloning. Reproductive cloning is the
use of cells from a host to create a whole new genetic copy. Therapeutic cloning is the use of embryonic stem cells to create tissue to replace damaged tissue
and whole organs. The ethical concerns with cloning didn t become a problem until Dolly, the sheep, was created. Many years before Dolly very similar

The Paradox Commandments Analysis
A poem is often defined as an art form used to express yourself, which evokes emotion in its reader. However, there are poems with another purpose besides
making the audience feel something. Some poems are used to educate, inspire, or give advice to it s readers. Two poems that offer excellent advice about how
to live life happily and successfully are If by Rudyard Kipling and The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith. Rudyard Kipling, the author of If
and Dr. Kent M. Keith, the author of The Paradoxical Commandments give both similar and different advice, but this advice is directed at two different
audiences because of the way it is presented in the poems.
The largest difference between these poems is the demographic they are written for. If is undeniably male dominant in comparison to The Paradoxical
Commandments which has advice directed at anyone who chooses to read it. The first indication that If has advice specifically given to males is in line three
when Kipling says, If you can trust yourself when men doubt you, This line could have easily been adjusted to ... when people doubt you, to allow all readers
to relate to it. The second time Kipling makes it obvious his words are for male readers only is the second line of the final stanza Or walk with Kings nor lose
the common touch. Kings are clearly masculine, and as powerful as a person can get in Kipling s eyes. The final line of the poem And which is more you ll be

The Messages Of Langston Hughes s Poetry
Poetry is a way for people to express themselves. Written in stanzas, there is much more art to it than simply putting words down on paper so they sound nice.
Poets keep in mind the syllable count, the rhyme scheme, the order of unstressed and stressed syllables, and many more techniques, depending on the type of
poem. Also, every poem has a unique, powerful message. Langston Hughes was a recent American poet who wrote countless quality works, many of which
have an enduring impact.
On February 1, 1902, one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, James Mercer Langston Hughes, was born in Joplin, Missouri. His father left for

am the darker brother, (Hughes) to symbolize his skin color. He writes about how black people were constantly controlled by the superior white race. However,
he eventually became independent and slightly vengeful. This is demonstrated in the hyperbole, Besides, they ll see how beautiful I am and be ashamed

The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari Comparative Essay
Horror films are a format of entertainment used to thrill, entice, and scare audiences for years, dating all the way back to the era of silent film. In the genre,
there are many types of horror, which include expressionism, melodrama, film noir, and science fiction. For the following prose, the style of German
Expressionism will be highlighted by contrasting a film from 1919, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari directed by Robert Wiene, with 2010 film Shutter Island

By distorting the outside world and the characters in it, the audience is thrilled and taken to another world full of horror and distress in a subjective manner. In
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the set design is wildly distorted, with construction that had never been seen before. Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell write,
The cutting and camerawork are fairly conservative, but the setting and acting seek to convey a madman s vision of the world (Bordwell and Thompson 1).
The setting itself, a carnival, was very popular at the time the film was made. The makeup of Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), and his somnambulist Cesare

criminally insane. It is mentioned that the only way on or off the island is by way of the ferry. The island is

The First Experiments Of Water Treatment
A plumber is an adventurer who traces leaky pipes to their source (Arthur Baer). We have all heard the saying, The plumber protects the health of the nation ,
but what does that really mean? Plumbing has been around since 6500 BC, maybe even longer. Ancient water wells were found in the Jezreel Valley, which
historians date to be thousands of years old. This was one of the first signs of plumbing in the ancient world. The Ancient Greek civilizations evolved
plumbing, being the first ones to use underground clay pipes for water distribution and sanitation. They were also one of the first ones to create and use flush
toilets. The 54Roman Empire used indoor plumbing to get water to individuals inside buildings and homes. Plumbing is responsible for bringing water to
people, because people cannot survive without water. as we got into the modern age, plumbing started to evolve. The first experiments of water treatment were
happening in the early modern age. This would enable the supply of clean, potable water to everyone. Plumbers are now responsible for the maintenance and
sanitation of all water supply systems and treatment plants. Plumbing is one of the most important job in the world because plumbers are responsible for

Indic religions, or Dharmic religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, do not express strong opinions on homosexuality. In fact, a third gender is mentioned

twins are produced; if either are weak or deficient in quantity, a failure of conception results (3.49).
The third gender is also defined as not procreative according to The Vedas, a Hindu scripture. However, it is viewed negatively as the third gender is usually
affiliated with low class as described in ancient text (Gyatso). Interestingly, members of the third sex are not frowned upon even though some ancient Hindu
law books describe non vaginal sex as impure. Kama Sutra, a Hindu text that describes the pleasure of

Weaknesses Of Liberal Democracy
Although our nation s government relies on the fundamentals of liberal democracy, it still has many flaws. Articles written by Francis Fukuyama share a clear
message suggesting that America s political institutions are decaying and its flaws will not be fixed unless we have good leadership within the government that
yields good policies. It is still not too late to make reformations in the system. Today, US citizens share a distrust for the inner workings of our government,
and through the years, there are many things that must change. Although our government is able to withstand failures right now, it may cause an expansion of
problems that will cost us indefinitely. The existence of interest groups has caused an exponential increase in the elite control of the system, thus creating
people s lack of trust for the government.
The existence of interest groups and the government s abilities have grown substantially; however, the accountability of the government has declined. The
United States government relies on the fundamental checks and balances of the three branches of government the executive, the judiciary, and the legislature
corresponding to...the state, the rule of law, and democracy (The Sources of Political Dysfunction). Nevertheless, the government has been exercising more
power, allowing the judicial branch to become an alternate instrument for the expansion of government (The Sources of Political Dysfunction). As a result,
interest groups have found

Obamacare The Affordable Care Act
In March 2013, President Barack Obama signed a federal statue into law that would change the way Americans receive healthcare. The Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act, better known as the Affordable Care Act, and sometimes called Obamacare is the most significant revision of the U.S. healthcare system
since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid back in 1965. The main function of the Affordable Care Act is to improve hospitals and physicians practices
financially, technologically, and clinically so the health outcomes and lower costs. Americans are split, as they are with most political issues, on whether or not
the act is a viable solution to our healthcare problem. Even though it has had its problems such as a faulty website and being thought of as too complicated and
expensive for the American government to take on, I believe the Affordable Care Act is a good solution for the healthcare problems in our country. Before the
Affordable Healthcare Act, there were a few healthcare reform bills proposed and passed by Congress and earlier presidents. President Bill Clinton proposed a
healthcare reform bill that would make employers responsible for providing their employees with health insurance. The Republicans did not agree with that
plan and suggested an alternative that would require individuals to buy insurance. The Clinton bill ended up failing because of negative advertising and
concerns that it was way too complex (Roy). He instead passed the State Children s

Pup Insurance Research Paper
When you are in a car accident it is vital to your financial recovery that adequate insurance be in place to cover the costs of your care and other expenses
related to the wreck. Most times, the negligent driver s company covers the costs of your medical expenses and other damages (like any lost wages from time
off work, or the pain and suffering associated with the incident), but in some instances a hurt person can also make a claim on their own insurance policy. This
may be something to consider if there is an insufficient amount of insurance, or no insurance at all.
The way to make a claim on your own insurance is by purchasing PIP insurance, or personal injury protection. The way this type of policy works in the real
world is like this:

The Locomotive Research Paper
The steam locomotive was an invention that was a large part of the Transportation Revolution. It helped industrialize the United States.
The first steam locomotive was patented in the Untied Kingdom in 1802 by Richard Trevithick. After testing his High Pressure Tram engine , he wrote it carry
d ten tons of iron, five wagons, and 70 men... . His invention was the first of many designs of the steam powered vehicle. After Trevithick, George Stephenson,
who was falsely named The Father of the Railroad , created the first practical locomotive. It resembled the modern train more than Trevithick s design. His
invention was used more in coal mines. The designs of the locomotive continued to change and improve until Americans realized the usefulness of the
locomotive. Tom Thumb, a locomotive prototype created by Peter Cooper, raced against a horse and almost won until it broke down in the end. After that race,
many companies began engineering trains.
Even though its history had many twists and turns, how locomotives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It did this by providing a cost and time efficient way to travel. Before the steam locomotive was invented, people either had to walk, or travel by horse, wagon,
sailboat, etc. All of those options consumed large amounts of time (especially if they were traveling across the country), and they were also expensive. It also
allowed people to transport large items, like building supplies. By being able do this, they were able to populate available land. It also allowed people from
other states to use products from far away, especially food. For example, people from New England would be able to eat a type of food from Virginia.
The steam locomotive was a very important invention to not only the Transportation Revolution, but also the Industrial Revolution. One could probably go as

Descriptive Essay On Sculptures
As the sun started to settling down, you walked into a wonderful museum full of figure sculptures to which the natural spot light shines from the sun hit the
wonderful master pieces. Then you walk more deeply inside an exhibition room, suddenly, you notice that you are surrendered by medium size to large
sculptures. One sculpture that is space equally to one an another, but they all have no cloth on. As you tend to get closer and closer and the story of the
sculptures reveal more details of what is the sculpture tell you like a story telling. Even the details of the bodies tend to give of a more muscle structures. When
looking at a stone sign above, you notice that you are in a theme of nude figure sculptures. In the center were the four main sculptures which is in order from
finest pick from the museum and three from the class room lecture. They are The Lansdown Athlete, the Roman copy of the Lysippos, and Roman copy after a
Greek original by Praxiteles, Hermes and the Infant Dionysos. From my opinion is that the sculptures are in nude because they tell us that the sculptures are
goddesses or a recreation of a person that is not real. The nude sculpture is one who is not wearing cloth or less who which it shows our body parts. Most of the
sculptures are made out of stone, marble, and bronze. They are shown in large structure or a human size. All figures are mostly made in Greek Late Classical to
Hellenistic, thus the artist show more details in human body structures. For

Analysis Of The Kings Of Summer
Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can
make or break a film. In the film The Kings of Summer, directed by Jordan Vogt Roberts, these two elements collaborate to highlight certain emotions and key
moments in the film s plot. Some of the sub elements of these two components that can easily be identified within the film include the flashforward, the
flashback, both nondiegetic and diegetic sound, semi diegetic sound, graphic matching and voice offs. Within the film The Kings Of Summer, editing and
sound are methodically and tactfully utilized in order to produce a film that is both entertaining and meaningful for the audience. Two of the most prominent
aspects of editing that can be identified within this film are the flashforward and the flashback. At the commencement of the film, a flashforward is employed.
It shows drums being played in a forest by the three characters that were yet to be introduced to the audience. Then the scene quickly cuts to the main
character, Joe, in the shower at his house. This flashforward is used in order to provide the audience with an idea of what is to come in the not so distant future
of the film. Another flashforward is utilized when Joe, Patrick, and Biaggio are living in the forest. This flashforward shows Joe and the female lead, Kelly, in
the woods. It portrays the two in a romantic light, and includes a confession from Kelly that she wants to stay and live in the forest with Joe. This flashforward,
unlike the previous example, does not come true. However, it is used to portray the deep emotions of Joe, and his longing for female companionship. These
emotions become relevant when Kelly falls for Joe s friend Patrick instead of him. During the conclusion of the film, a flashback is employed so the audience
can relive the previous events that occurred within the film. When Biaggio is in the hospital, a flashback reminds the audience of when Joe and Patrick first
entered the forest, at the onset of their adventure. This flashback brings the audience back to a happier and lighter point in the story line. In the film The Kings
of Summer, flashfowards and

The majority of the movie is focused around the bicycle. The main character Antonio Ricci is having a hard time finding a job but all of that changes after he own a bicycle, which was later stolen. • 3. Martin Luther And John Calvin Essay The Renaissance was a time where individuals questioned numerous aspects of European culture and society, which have collectively broadened the worldview from medieval to modern. As such, a new wave of theological thinking emerged from the dissent of the late Medieval church, and this is commonly known as the Reformation. Martin Luther is often credited as the Great Man whose Ninety Five Thesis a provocative set of questions targeting the Church set in motion the pivotal process of religious change, known as Protestantism. The radical change from medieval Christianity to modern Christianity is often confined to the ideas of two important men: Martin Luther and John Calvin. It is also important to note the vastness of time that the Renaissance dominated compared to the short period within 1517 to 1559 that these two reformers lived. Yet without them, without the challenging and convincing religious arguments and questions they put forward justification by faith alone, the doctrine of double predestination the religious change as seen in the sixteenth century, as well as even the name of the movement could ve been very different. In the year 1509, the year in which John Calvin was born, Martin Luther had already begun spreading his teachings. By the age of eight, Martin Luther had publicized his Ninety Five Thesis and the German Reformation had already seen the culmination of Luther s teachers and influence. Ruth allows her son and the neighborhood boys to come to the house to drink and smoke. While the boys are over Ruth abuses Megan, physically and emotionally in front of them. Megan is called a whore and is starved. Ruth beats up Susan and blames her beatings on Megan. The only person who tries to help Megan and Susan is David, the next door neighbor. One day Megan goes to the police and as punishment she is put in the cellar and is hung from the rafters. They all play this game of confession with her. Since she does not play along with the game they strip her, blindfold her, and put a gag in her mouth. Ruth invites all of the kids in the neighborhood to the cellar so they can burn, beat and cut her for their own amusement. The next day Megan gets raped by her cousin Willie while everyone watched. David tried to leave, but was forced to watch. Ruth heats up a needle and carves I fuck, fuck me on to Megan s stomach. Ruth decides in order for Megan to never want to be with a guy and for no guy to want her she needs to give Megan a clitorectomy with a blowtorch. Megan died from all the injuries caused by Ruth. The next morning David starts a fire in the cellar to get people s attention. Ruth sees that there is a fire and goes in to the cellar. David then beats Ruth until she s dead with a crutch. A police officer arrived and took Susan to go get help. The end shows Willie and Donny being arrested. Willie s personality is just like Ruth s. He is taught and shown how to disregard woman and to take everything from them. Since he is taught and shown this behavior he thinks it is acceptable to cause harm to another human being. He has the personality trait of being malicious. His sole being in the movie is to cause harm to Megan and Susan and to make their life as unpleasant as possible. Willie was in the adolescence stage in the movie which means he was forming his own identity and seeking independence. This is illustrated when Willie is not told to act in such way towards his cousin, but does anyway. He is forming his own decisions that are not based off of anyone around him ... • 6. Honey Bees Decline There are many problems with bees currently. One of those problems includes the decline of the bee population and their hives. On the other hand there are many good things that are related to bees. An example of this is the pollination of plants by bees. If bees did not exist then there would be a drastic decrease in most of the food that people eat on a daily basis. Bees are kept for several reasons. Honey bees are mostly kept for commercial use or just a hobby. These bees are called Apis mellifera, or European honey bees. These bees have a presence all over the world. They produce honey as well as pollinate crops. The most popular subspecies are Italian bees, A. mellifera ligustica. These bees are usually orange or bright yellow and can amass a sizeable population in the spring. Their way of feeding is to rob other colonies of their honey. Another popular bee is named Apis mellifera scutellata, or the killer bee as most people know it, it is also known as the Africanized bees. Some even call them the producers of liquid gold . The africanized queen can mate with both European and Africanized drones. Doing so makes some the produced queens Africanized and the others European. Because africanized queens leave their cells one day before the European queens they will kill the other queens. This will cause a what once was a European colony to become an Africanized colony. This can cause problems as Africanized bees are more likely to migrate if their food supply is low. They are also very defensive of their hive and will guard them with extreme aggression. ... Togo is one of the third world countries in West Africa, and its poverty is due to the lack of steady jobs which will bring a reliable income to the household. There are no jobs at all in the country, and the few enterprises do not have enough capability to hire; all those conditions develop homeless and shantytowns because people cannot afford a suitable roof. The odd slipper (Page 99 101), specifically addresses a lot of Mr. Palomar s perspectives on simple topics, it clearly shows that Mr. Palomar is a deep thinker and it conveys his habit of over complicating matters that are supposed to be simple, it is effective in highlighting the image that Mr. Palomar is a character who tends to isolate himself from the world by questioning it and examining every aspect of our being and stance in society. The odd slipper (Page 99) is about Mr. Palomar receiving a mismatched shoe while shopping in Bazaar. This passage displays the sudden division of Mr. Palomar s seemingly strong perspective into two different, opposing viewpoints. One is that at first, Mr. Palomar believed that by purchasing a mismatched shoe, he had started a chain of events that would cause consequences in the future: centuries can go by before the consequences of this mistake affect another visitor to that ancient bazaar. Every process of disintegration in the order of the world is irreversible; the effects, however, are hidden and delayed by the dust cloud of the big numbers, which contains virtually limitless possibilities of new symmetries, combinations, pairings. So, in a sense, religion actually came into Japan in the 6th century, when Buddhism, founded by Prince Shotoku (571 622), was transmitted to Japan from China (Web Japan 2). Throughout the story, Paley uses language to generate a healthy dialogue about the fragility of life by comparing the thoughts and reactions of all the characters in the story leading up to and following Samuel s tragic death. The story conveys the story of four young boys and their adventure on a subway one day. The story chronicles the thoughts of the passengers on the train in New York City, and their actions leading up and following the unfortunate death of the main character Samuel. At the start of this story Paley tells the reader Some boys are very tough. They re afraid of nothing. (Paley). By using words like brave and tough, Paley tells the reader what characteristics were ideal for the four boys featured in this story. She goes on to say, They are the ones who climb a wall and take a bow at the top. Not only are they brave on the roof, but they create plenty of noise in the darkest part of the cellar where even the super hates to go. They also jiggle and hop on the platform between the locked doors of the subway cars. (Paley) Paley connects those two words to give the reader a vague idea of what Samuel and his friends view about death. Paley conveys that the boys were unaware that death was looming of them. Their goal in jumping on the subway car was to prove they were fearless. The boys actions in the subway car show that their goal was to prove there that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hagar Leaving Abraham s House In Genesis Hagar and Ishmael s story in Genesis is often understood in the light of Isaac being the rightful heir to Abraham s inheritance and legacy through the abandonment and expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael. At first glance, the story portrays Hagar as an outsider, an Egyptian servant, who is beneath Sarah, the mistress; thus, this difference in position justifies Hagar and Ishmael s abandonment from Abraham s house. A closer look at the story evokes the reader s sympathy for Hagar and Ishmael s unfair treatment since Ishmael is the firstborn son. In the first account, the text states that Sarah s inability to bear Abraham a child led her to take matters into her own hands by giving her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar, to Abraham as a concubine so that he can bear him a child through Hagar. After Hagar and Abraham cohabited, she became pregnant, which caused Sarah to be disturbed by her status in Hagar s eyes. Sarah complained to Abraham and he told her to deal with it as she thinks fit as Hagar is her maidservant. This caused Sarah to treat Hagar harshly and resulted in Hagar fleeing from her master s house to run from Sarah. An angel of YHWH found her near a spring on the road to Shur and told her to return to her master s house and submit to the harsh treatment, while also instilling (?) some blessings to her. This narrative ended with the birth of Ishmael when Abraham was eighty six years old. The second text in Genesis 21 begins with the fulfillment of God s promise to Sarah with the birth of Isaac when Abraham was a hundred years old. Sarah was delighted with Isaac s birth and was laughing at the people who mocked her for her inability to bear Abraham a son. During Isaac s feast, she saw Ishmael playing with Isaac, which saddened her and she demanded that Hagar and Ishmael be cast out as she did not want Ishmael, the son of a slave, to share the same inheritance as Isaac. Abraham was greatly distressed by Sarah s request, but God told him to not worry and follow Sarah s demand for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be continued for you (Gen. 21:12) and He will bless Ishmael by [making] a nation of him (21:13). • 15. Rousseau s Views On Private Property Henri Aleksi Vanhanen Midterm Exam 11.6.2015 PART A 1. The quote was made by Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712 1778) in his creation On Social Contract (1762) (Rousseau, Social Contract, 4). Rousseau s discourse on private property can be understood as a response to John Locke s theories regarding property and especially to Locke s labor theory and the government s role in it (assumption based on the similarity of their discourse). According to Locke s labor theory, a man s labor defines his right to own something (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 16) and that one of the government s top priorities is to guarantee inheritance of private property for those who have and own something (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 37). The theory also contains the aspect that one can own something if he improves it (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 15). In the concept of the society and government s duties Locke and Rousseau have different ideas. Locke states that the most important social contract is made between the people and that the government should not impose its grip upon things that the people are capable of solving together themselves (Locke, Second Treatise Government, 4). For Rousseau the state of nature is not a constant state of war (Rousseau, Social Contract, 4). This explains why Rousseau says that war cannot arise from personal relations. Early in the semester we touched upon the fact that culture is, in actuality, much more nuanced and is something practiced and experienced differently on every scale and in every interaction throughout every person s lifetime. Upon completion of the course, an investigation into my own culture will exemplify just that. Organic Vs Conventional Food Vs Organic Food Essay Organic versus Conventional Food Are you concerned about the health of yourself and that of your family when walking through the grocery store? You should be. You might be surprised to learn about chemicals known to exist in the conventional foods we eat daily. Ever wonder why apples are so shiny? A coating of shellac is applied to apples to give them a shiny coating, prolonging their shelf life, and prevent bruising. You might reconsider the next time you reach for the shiniest red apple and remember to think about the pesticides that were used to make it that way. Being informed of the benefits of organic food versus those of conventional will enable you to make the best decisions for you and your family. Organic food is an alternative to conventional food. It is marketed as pure, wholesome and natural. Organic food is generally considered healthier than conventional grown foods. People shopping for organic food usually do so to avoid the chemicals, not necessarily because organic products have more nutrition. There are little to no pesticides sprayed on organic food. While this does make the food taste fresher, it also means that it will spoil sooner. Unfortunately, this increases costs to the consumer because it means it cost more money to get the produce more quickly to the market/grocery store. • 24. War And Peace, By Nancy Scheper Hughes And Philippe In an age of multiple overlapping crises involving public institutions, war, capital and law, we witness a normalization of violence in everyday life. Violence, as defined by the World Health Organization is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community that may result in various harms ranging from psychological harm and deprivation to injury and death. From an anthropological perspective, all dimensions of violence are shaped by cultural and social structures, ideas and ideologies. In their publication titled Violence in War and Peace, Nancy Scheper Hughes and Philippe Bourgois suggest that expressions and repressions of violence are sometimes so deeply embedded in broader socio cultural structures that they go unrecognized. According to Scheper Hughes and Bourgois, these misrecognized and often invisible forms of violence racism, inequality and exclusion are often not disapproved of nor seen as deviant behavior but, are generally applauded conventional social, economic and political norms (5). From these larger social, cultural, and political systems, violence derives its power and meaning. Examining instances of violence in these ways, within their wider contexts of power and meaning, is critical for a variety of reasons. On the one hand Rome became master of the Mediterranean, with secure lands encircling the entire sea and new resource rich territory in Hispania (Morey, 1901). On the other hand, much of the fertile areas of the Italian homeland were destroyed completely (Morey, 1901). From the perspective of Carthage the outcome of the Second Punic war was less uncertain. The Second Punic War is better thought of as the Era of the Second Punic War, the thing occurred over the span of about 17 years from 218 to 201 BCE. This was the final showdown between Carthage and Rome for control of the Mediterranean and the era of heroes and battles whose names we still know today, Hannibal, War Elephants, the Scipios, the battle of Cannae are the most famous (Morey, 1901) The overall arc of the Second Punic War was Carthage, led by Hannibal, invading the Italian peninsula from the North. Chapter 3: Methodology The researcher conducted this quantitative research study to explore the influence of age, work experience, education level, and competence based standardized entrance exam scores on whether a job applicant will pass a pre employment polygraph exam. While demand for qualified law enforcement applicants has increased significantly, the pool of participants qualified for these positions has diminished (Wilson et al., 2010). In order to address this developing issue, law enforcement employers need to understand how their hiring procedures affect employment outcomes. The polygraph is one hiring procedure commonly used in the law enforcement field. While there has been some research exploring non physiological variable influences on integrity type tests, there is a lack of research on non physiological variable influences on the polygraph test. As such, the researcher plans to explore possible influences on pre employment polygraph exams. This study will contribute to the existing literature on integrity tests, which in turn will provide researchers and Human Resource policy makers with additional data. These individuals may potentially use this data to streamline hiring processes for specialized law enforcement, security, and government positions. This chapter will outline the research design and methodology proposed to be followed. First, the overall research design will be justified. Next, the independent and dependent variables will be ... • 31. The Paradox Commandments Analysis A poem is often defined as an art form used to express yourself, which evokes emotion in its reader. However, there are poems with another purpose besides making the audience feel something. Some poems are used to educate, inspire, or give advice to it s readers. Two poems that offer excellent advice about how to live life happily and successfully are If by Rudyard Kipling and The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith. Rudyard Kipling, the author of If and Dr. Kent M. Keith, the author of The Paradoxical Commandments give both similar and different advice, but this advice is directed at two different audiences because of the way it is presented in the poems. The largest difference between these poems is the demographic they are written for. If is undeniably male dominant in comparison to The Paradoxical Commandments which has advice directed at anyone who chooses to read it. The first indication that If has advice specifically given to males is in line three when Kipling says, If you can trust yourself when men doubt you, This line could have easily been adjusted to ... when people doubt you, to allow all readers to relate to it. By distorting the outside world and the characters in it, the audience is thrilled and taken to another world full of horror and distress in a subjective manner. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the set design is wildly distorted, with construction that had never been seen before. Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell write, The cutting and camerawork are fairly conservative, but the setting and acting seek to convey a madman s vision of the world (Bordwell and Thompson 1). The setting itself, a carnival, was very popular at the time the film was made. The makeup of Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), and his somnambulist Cesare (Conrad Veidt) is also included in this bizarre new style of expression. Dr. Caligari has thick wrinkles drawn on his face, as well as wild hair and dress. Cesare has a very dark and dismal look, which includes dark eye circles, dark hair, clothing, and chains. In contrast, the modern film Shutter Island, distorts the set of the movie in a different, yet still terrifying and subjective manner. • 48. Analysis Of The Kings Of Summer Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can make or break a film.
