Not in Our Stars, But in Ourselves
Whose fault? / Whose but his own? is a question that has been raised many times in
human history (Milton 3.96). Many authors and poets have tackled the question of
why humanity is constantly tested and tempted to sin, and, further, whether
humanity has the free will to decide its own fate. After the Reformation of the
Catholic church that created Protestantism, the idea of predestination was very
popular. Protestant ideology claimed that only a few people were destined to be
saved or damned by God, and that only some people will be saved. This created a
general anxiety about faith and free will in Renaissance England, leading many to
question who was at fault when human beings sin. Two of the most well known epic
poems of the Renaissance era are The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser and
Paradise Lost by John Milton. Both poems feature characters that face trials and
tribulations, and how the respective poems deal with the trails reveals different
ideas about fate, free will, and the idea of being tested. Both poems use temptation
relation to female bodies and sexual desire, diverse reactions to falling and failure,
and prophecy that contribute to two different ideas about free will and the role of
God in the lives of his creations.
Female seduction and sexual temptation are featured both in The Faerie Queene and
Paradise Lost, but are represented in different ways. In Paradise Lost, Eve leads to
the eventual downfall of Adam because she
3. Short And Long-Term Effects Of Alcohol Abuse
Substance Related Disorders
1.Describe a number of short and long term effects of alcohol abuse.
Some short term effects of alcohol abuse are the reduction of tension, production of
pleasurable affects, as well as slowed thinking and memory loss. Studies also show
poor decision making to be a short term effect of alcohol consumption. Some long
term effects are psychological deterioration as well as a physical deterioration. Just
about every organ is adversely affected by the long term consumption of alcohol. For
example, a person who uses alcohol long term reduces the amount of food intake due
to the calories consumed by alcohol that has little nutritional value. Over time this
person can become malnourished. Long term use of alcohol can ... Show more content

Distinguish between substance abuse and substance dependence. What are the DSM
IV TR criteria for each?
Substance abuse is an intense desire to use increasing amounts of a particular
substance to the exclusion of other activities whereas drug dependence relies on the
body s physical need for a particular substance.
The DSM IV TR criteria for substance dependence requires the person to have three or
more of the following; tolerance, characteristic withdrawal symptoms, substance
taken in larger amount and for a longer period of time than intended, persistent desire
or repeated unsuccessful attempt to quit, more time or activity to obtain, use and
recover, important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced,
and use that continues despite the knowledge of adverse consequences.
Drug abuse requires the person to have one or more of the following symptoms in a
12 month period; recurrent use resulting in failure to fulfill a major role or obligation
at work, home, or school, recurrent substance related legal problems, continued use
despite persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems or exacerbated by
4. Pet Overpopulation Case Study
As I ve investigated, the same problem to our city pet overpopulation keeps coming
up; unwanted breeding. Animals, domesticated or not mostly act on instinct. When
domesticated animals are in heat, their behavior changes as they search for a mate to
soothe their instinctual desires. Pet owners usually skip on spaying neuteringtheir pets
because of the cost and burden of taking care of a post surgery animalfor two days.
Most veterinarians charge over $100 (also depending on the sex, canine/feline,
weight, age) for sterilizing an animal but low cost clinics exist, costing up to 30
40% less than a normal vet costs. Unfortunately, the public isn t always aware unless
they do extensive google research. As Leslie Irvine states in this case on pet... Show

the traditional function of warehousing unwanted pets. In doing so, they

every worker s stance, but if more were done such as offering services, maybe the
appearance of this negative view would fade. Houston has arranged with SNAP, a
mobile clinic that does offer spay/neutering services for free, but there s a big limit
on it. SNAP only offers free services to clients who can show proof of participation
in a public assistance program and only accepts a maximum of 24 cats and dogs at
a time. Qualifying residents are chosen from a lottery held at 6:30AM on surgery
day (Masilow 2015). This seems quite discouraging to many, probably not even
bothering to show up on the chance. A more organized service with appointments and
less qualifications should be offered to city residents, especially those on lower
5. Stoicism in Ancient Rome Essay
Stoicism made the transition from an intriguing foreign philosophy to a popular
practice because it was taken up by several high profile figures. Scipio Africanus,
the original esteemed Roman Stoic died in 129 BCE, but about 40 years later a new
crop of celebrated Romans took up the Stoic practice. During the fall of the Roman
Republic a group of famed orators, generals, and statesmen including Marcus Junius
Brutus (85 42 BCE), Marcus Tullius Cicero(106 43 BCE), Pompey the Great (106 48
BCE), and Cato the Younger(95 46 BCE) all professed themselves Stoics. This group
of powerful statesmen and leaders practicing Stoicism disseminated it throughout
Rome. Octavian (63 BC 14 AD) who later became Caesar Augustushad a Stoic tutor

He had been highly educated in both Greece and Rome. He was also a great
intellectual and orator of his time which would have put him in contact with the
people who already knew of Stoicism. He studied under the Stoic philosopher
Diodotus (d. 59 BCE). They maintained such a close friendship that Diodotus lived
in Cicero s house until his death when he left everything he owned to Cicero.
While Cicero considered himself not a complete disciple of Stoicism (he followed
some teaching of Epicurus and Plato) he practiced Stoicism s ideals, especially it s
ethics, throughout his life. Professor and historian Edward Clayton writes that
Cicero puts forth Stoic doctrines not dogmatically, as absolutely and always true,
but as the best set of beliefs so far developed. We ought to adhere to them because
our lives, both individually and collectively, will be better if we do. It is essentially
Stoic ethical teachings that Cicero urges the Roman elite to adopt. Cicero urges the
elite to adopt these ethics through his orations and his philosophical writings. He,
himself, studied the texts of the earlier stoic philosopher Panaetius, and this
influenced his most famous work: De Officiis, or On Duty. On De Divinationes,
another of Cicero s Stoicism influenced works, the historian A E Douglas writes that:
Cicero wrote at its beginning and again at its end... that he was deliberately seeking
relief through philosophy from the political troubles of the time and an outlet
6. Article 226 And The High Courts
The Supreme Court under Article 32 and the High Courts under Article 226 of the
Constitution have passed a number of orders and directions for this concern. Like
the conversion of all public transport in the Metropolitan City of Delhi from diesel
engine to CNG engine on the basis of the order of the High Court of Delhi to ensure
that the pollutionlevel is mitigated and this is being totally observed for the last
several years. Now only vehicles running on Compressed Natural Gas are given
permission to ply on Delhi roads for public transport.
Louise Erdrich Bigogress, who is an environmentalist has quite aptly observed that
grass and sky are two canvasses into which the rich details of the earth are drawn. In
1980s, the courts paid special attention to the problem of environmental degradation
and passed a number of directions and orders to make sure the that environment
ecology, wildlife are saved, preserved and protected. Every day hundreds of
thousands of industries are functioning without pollution control procudures. Lakhs
of Indians work in mines and do hazardous work without proper safety protection.
Each day lakhs of litres of harmful raw discharged effluents are dumped into our
rivers and lakhs of tons of hazardous waste is simply dumped on the Earth. The
environment around us, as a result become so degraded, that instead of nurturing us it
is now poisoning us. In this context, in many cases, the Supreme Court has intervened

We suggest it is a good time but not a good idea for Jules Kroll to enter the credit

SWOT analysis to see the feasibility of this plan.

strength for them to enter this new industry by his successful business career and

So it is also attractive for Jules Kroll to take this opportunity to enter the credit rating
industry. In addition, the issuer pays model, which used by the big three rating
agencies, lets companies shop around for the best ratings, putting pressure on the
agencies to inflate their grades. As a result, it is very difficult to argue that they can
adequately represent the users side. Therefore, Jules Kroll wants to use another
model that can assign unbiased and reliable ratings.
Threat The leading ratings agencies, Moody s, Standard Poor s and Fitch a
triumvirate some liken to an oligopoly, almost dominate the whole market. Their long
history operations, great reputation and customers loyalty in the industry lead them
incomparable to new entrants. Furthermore, Kroll also faces competition from new
entrants like Meredith Whitney, a banking analyst who is getting into the ratings
business, and Morningstar, of mutual fund fame, and the Chinese municipal rating
agency Dagong with huge capital. Therefore, it is tough for Kroll to break into this
new industry where the three dominant incumbents have 97% of all ratings.
In conclusion, we could say it is a good time for Kroll to enter credit rating
business since the big three agencies lost considerable investor confidence during
the financial crisis, and that the sector is ripe for new blood. However, based on our
SWOT analysis, we don t think it

CARAMEL AND CRYSTALLIZATION
When a wet caramel is made, first we make a sugar syrup which is sugar dissolved
in water. The water evaporates as heating process continue to make caramel, the
syrup becomes super saturated, which means that it holds more sugar molecules
than the normal capacity of water. Due to this, the sugar tries to re crystallize. If
this happens, final product ends up with a pan full of clear rock candy. In order to
avoid this, we have to make sure pan is spotlessly clean. Sugar molecules have
jagged edges and can easily stick to each other or to the impurities from the pan. A
tool is required to stir caramel, which may contain impurities leading to
crystallization, some people also say that stirring in itself (after the sugar has
dissolved) can cause the sugar syrup to crystallize, as stirring encourages the sugar
molecules to clump together. So instead, swirling the pan is another option

As the sugar and water boil, sugar syrup might fall on the wall of the pot, where it
evaporates very fast and thus forming back into sugar crystals. Even if one of these
crystals falls back into the syrup, it can cause a chain reaction, which turns the clear
syrup opaque and grainy. This can be avoided by removing it from the heat, adding
a few tablespoons of water, returning it to the heat, and stirring until the crystals
dissolve before continuing on However, it s better to keep recrystallization from
occurring in the first place, so there are a few ways to prevent

Gogol s Parents, Ashima and Ashoke, gave him a name to add meaning and purpose

Nikolai Gogol, at the scene of Ashoke s train wreck has passed away and this has a
connection with Gogol s life. When looking at his life it seems to be filled with
confusion, disappointments, and dead ends (Such as?) as he struggles to figure out
whom he is and where he believes the curse of his namesake will lead him next.
The important themes of name and identity are very evident in Chapter 3. The

him to go by Gogol at home but Nikhil at school. However this then leads to
confusing him and he has no interest in another name. He considers that depending
on where he is he may need to be two different people then leading to him having
two different names. He is afraid to be Nikhil, someone he doesn t know. Who

identity with having a new name. His unusual name does not bother him until he
turns eleven and he attends a class trip to a cemetery which is when he uncovers
that his name is special. Some of the other gravestones have names he has never

Proddatur, India tmukthar@gmail.com Abstract: Detection engines capable of
inspecting packet payloads for application layer network information are urgently
required. The most important technology for fast payload inspection is an efficient
multipattern matching algorithm, which performs exact string matching between
packets and a large set of predefined patterns. This paper proposes a novel Enhanced
Hierarchical Multipattern Matching Algorithm (EHMA) for packet inspection.
Based on the occurrence frequency of grams, a small set of the most frequent grams
is discovered and used in the EHMA. EHMA is a two tier and cluster wise matching
algorithm, which significantly reduces the amount of external memory accesses and
the capacity of memory. Using a skippable scan strategy, EHMA speeds up the
scanning process. Furthermore, independent of parallel and special functions, EHMA
is very simple and therefore practical for both software and hardware
implementations. Simulation results reveal that EHMA significantly improves the
matching performance. The speed of EHMA is about 0.89 1,161 times faster than
that of current matching algorithms. Even under real life intense attack, EHMA still
performs well.

Common Themes in Poetry
After reading and analysing numerous poems, I have chosen two examples of the
famous Irish Poet, Seamus Heaney s work: Follower and
Mid Term Break . Both poems relate to the poet s past, and are certainly associated
with a specific loss of a loved one one a literal loss, and the other a subconscious loss.
Mid Term Break , which I found to be a very touching and poignant poem,
describes the loss of the poet s younger brother, Christopher when Heaney was a
child, hence the poem is of a childhood tragedy as well as a loss. It s set in three

A double meaning is presented in the final line of the second stanza:
Big Jim Evans saying it was a hard blow
The hard blow may be referring to the actual blow that killed
Christopher (as he was killed by a car), or the fact that it s a hard blow to the
family. Either way, one fact becomes apparent: the Heaney family have the support
and love of everyone around them, but that doesn t counteract for the tragic loss of
Christopher it may help clean the wound, but the scar will forever be visible. We also
attain the knowledge, due to his very personal identity, that Big Jim Evans is a family
friend, and that he himself is shaken by the situation considering his very plain and
yet meaningful comment. Again, the sadness and incredibility of the incident is
underlined not only family members are grieving.
Another detection of change is seen in the third stanza, and this time it s a very
uncomfortable change:

manageable to tackle in truth Sailing after Lunch is the poem that I find myself
most drawn to but alas ita too long. I figure there s no place like the title to start my

This poem, in particular, is strange in the way the actual body of the poem relates to
the title. I was reading this criticism and the author argues that the title is unusual
given the actual text of the poem. He even goes as far as saying Steven s poem lacks
any of the passion, sensuality, sentimentality, or effusiveness characteristic of so
much conventional romantic poetry. I don t know if I agree.
I read that line. Then I read the poem again. Then I went back to the criticism. For
me, there s always this sort of back and forth (if I m reading thoroughly and

moral of the story? That is where Thomas C. Foster s masterpiece, How to Read

introduces the topic of quests. In which he argues that every trip is a quest. Harrelson

Harrelson to embark on a journey to get her.
Harrelsons journey, however, is a quest. A quest to find out more about his life.
The structural obligations for a quest are all here. Obviously, Harrelson himself is

is the Mobil station where Meredith currently is. Harrelson s simple reason for
going is to pick up Meridith. There are many of obstacles along they way to

themes prevalent in adult learning coming to voice, developing the capacity for
critical reflection, and making meaning are reflected in the way journals can be used
in adult education. Journals are useful learning tools in a variety of adult education

Examples from Schatzberg Smith (1989), Oaks (1995), and Clark (1994) illustrate
the wide range of learner levels and applications. Adult students in community
colleges who are academically underprepared (Schatzberg Smith 1989) use them to
record their study habits and attitudes; through journal dialog with a more
academically skilled adult, they receive support, insight, and feedback; learn to
connect the abstract and the concrete; and develop metacognitive strategies they will
need for higher education.
Distance learners lack the physical presence of co learners for dialog and
collaboration. At Empire State College (Oaks 1995), a structured learning journal
replicates for distance learners many of the functions of a collaborative writing group.
The learners are given specific questions that stimulate their journal entries and
reinforce their movement through the writing process. In a sense, the journal
substitutes self dialog for communal discourse.
Clark (1994) explains how structured learning journals further the goals of
experiential learning for gerontology students preparing to work on interdisciplinary
health care teams. The ongoing developmental dialog in their journals is expressed
through three types of entries: (1) observational notes, with little interpretation; (2)
theoretical notes that attempt to make meaning of the observations and experiences;

Introduction Our perception of the world as individuals is unusually thought of
because we are unaware of the physiological and psychological capabilities our
brains possess. Through sound, recognition, and vision, animals have inherited these
traits for generations. One significant factor pertaining to who we are and how we
perceive the world around us are influenced by the genes inherited in our lineage.
One particular trait that is important in our lives is color visionand color blindness,
particularly cone dysfunction syndrome. Cone dysfunction syndrome is a
heterogeneous group of inherited disorders resulting from a mutation of
photopigment genes (Simunovic 1998). This rare form of visual deficiency can

The red green opsins are the most susceptible for mutation due to the localization of
each protein, producing color blindness. The localization of the red and green
opsins is near each other and contains ninety eight percent identical in their DNA
sequences (Sanders et al 2012). Mutations in these genes are caused by an error
during crossover in prophase I of female meiosis. It occurs in female meiosis rather
than male meiosis due to the fact that opsin genes are produced by the X linked
chromosome which females possess. This states that mothers are the sole carriers
of color blindness and it is rare for a female to express color blindness. Dalton s
eyes contributed to the understanding of color vision 150 years after his death. His
interests on color blindness have paved the way to understand color deficiency in our
society.
Achromatopsia
In Color Vision and Genetics in a Case of Cone Dysfunction Syndrome, Crognale
and Neitz ask the question: How drastic are genetic variability s influential to our
perception of color vision? To further answer this question, both researchers
analyzed cone dysfunction syndrome and how it varies from normal color vision by
having a patient in the study with an abnormal case of color vision ranging between
achromatopsia to mild green deficiencies. Achromatopsia is the condition in which
people perceive the world only of shades of grey while having normal cones in the
retina (Snowden 2006).

Squidward is extremely not self aware as he thinks he is talented at dance and
clarinet, when in reality he is awful at both. There are plenty of people in society
who have narcissistic tendencies, but in actuality have little talent, like the
Kardashians. However, deep down Squidward does care about Spongebob and the
others, he just likes to put up a tough front. Sandy is a squirrel from Texas who
lives in an air locked tree dome and wears a helmet and suit, so she can breathe
underwater. She is a karate master and exceptionally smart. She is very much an
outsider in Bikini Bottom, but everyone respects her wisdom. The characters in
Bikini Bottom regularly run on emotions and make stupid decisions, so she is the
rational voice among the chaos. This attribute can be seen through advisors, who
are supposed to help leaders make sane decisions. Also, teachers can be represented
by Sandy because of the wisdom and information they teach students and the
guidance they offer. Patrick is Spongebob s best friend, and together they partake in
many mindless adventures, often to the chagrin of others especially Squidward. He
has an overly exaggerated dumb persona, but is loveable at the same time. He is
Spongebob s faithful sidekick and extremely loyal. However, he unintendedly takes
advantage of Spongebob, eating his food and taking his stuff. Patrick represents that

All Hail the King
Who wears the pants in their relationship? someone may ask about a couple. In the
short story By the River by Jack Hodgins, Jim Styan is definitely the one wearing
the pants and is in charge of most, if not all, matters regarding him and his wife s
life. In essence, Jim is the King of the jungle, or more appropriately put, he is the
King of the Canadian wilderness. The balance of power in some relationships isn t
always an even fifty fifty split. Sometimes, one of the partners has most, if not
complete, control of the relationship. Unfortunately,
Jim and Crystal Styan s relationship is a prime example of the presence of ill
balanced relationships around the world.

decides everything and anything while Crystal stands by and succumbs to everything
he says.
Adding on to Jim Styan s complete dominance in his relationship with
Crystal, he is also exceptionally disloyal. Time after time, Jim fails in fulfilling his
dream of becoming a farmer, but Crystal is always supportive of him no matter
how badly he fouls up. Jim is so ungrateful that when Crystal put a hand on his
shoulder to comfort him when the sway backed old Jersey cow disappeared into
the bush he shook it off as if she is the one that failed him (pg 133). Even though
Jim has dragged her from place to place always looking and looking for his dream
and for that dream and for him she had suffered Crystal Styan has never though of
leaving Jim and that miserable place (pg 133). Perhaps it is because he can no longer
stand his own failure, the treacherous and ungrateful Jim left the unsuspecting Crystal

23. Life Of Pi By Yann Martel
Yann Martel, the author of Life of Pi, tells a miraculous survival story that
everyone will want to believe. He tells readers about the life a boy, who later in the
story gets stuck on a lifeboat with fierce companions for 227 days. Piscine Molitor
Patel, otherwise known as Pi , accompanies his family in moving to Canada from
India, though the ship sinks and he then tells his journey twice. Pi told his journey in
two versions, an animal version, and a human version. In both versions Pi is
accompanied with a zebra/sailor, a hyena/cook, his own mother/orangutan, and
himself/tiger (Martel 311). Though the characters in the novel, like Pi, the Chinese
officials, and the writer, preferred the animal version, the preferred version would be
the human version. The theme of Life of Pislowly emerges throughout the novel.
Pieces of the theme become present when the readers begin to understand the
novel as a whole. Martel divides this novel into three parts, which helps the readers
understand Pi and everything about him, which helps the readers figure out what
may or may not have happened. The theme of this novel would be that when in a
survival situation, it will take all a person is in order to survive. In the first part of
the novel, readers learn about Pi, his life, his religious beliefs, and zoology. Pi
believes in three different religions, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam (Martel 64).
His is religiously diverse, since there are so many religions and Gods in the

Analysis
In Canada, several key Aboriginal principles challenge modern liberal ideology. One
of these principles is the importance of the collective, whereas liberalism focuses on
individual freedom and equality. The value system of the dominant socio cultural
system in Canada is liberalism, which places emphasis on the individual, individual
rights, and private property. This is in contrast to the value system of Native peoples
which places a far higher value on the collectivity or upon the community. Liberalism,
with its individualism, ignores the value that the community has to Aboriginal
people. Aboriginal form of life places more emphasis on the communal and the
spiritual than does the individualistic and materialistic. Collective beliefs reject

positive, instead of jail time they focus on rehabilitation. There are centers for
adolescent boys and girls who are age 12 to 17, and adult centers for women and
men who are age 18 and up. Teen Challenge not only serves the client, but they also
serve the clients families by trying to rebuild their relationships that were shattered
by drugs and alcohol. Eligibility of the program is based on a tuition system for
some of the students. There is an initial induction fee of $1350 up front, a medical
fee of $170, and monthly tuition is $1050 as well. This is a huge negative in my
eyes, however, a majority of the students that come there can not afford these prices

28. Who Invented The Airplane Research Paper
I had always wondered how the Wright brothers invented the airplane. Slowly I had
become more and more interested in flight. Because of my interests, I decided to
build a time machine in my garage and take it to 1896, when the Wright brothers
first started working on the plane. It took me a year to completely finish the
machine. Then the day finally came to test it out. Shaking, I climbed into the small
cylinder and typed in 1896. After I pressed the button the machine shook.
Nervously and excitedly I opened the door. Surprisingly I found myself in a small
town. After walking around for a while I saw two men through the window of a
building. They seemed to be building something. Looking through the window I saw
the blueprints on the table, it looked like a plane. That was exactly what I was

of the brothers told me. They asked me if I wanted to help. Very excitedly I agreed.
It was very hard work ,but it was also very fun. It was also amazing that I got to
work with the Wright brothers. It took us about a year to finish the plane. When
we were finished, we ran into small problem. Who was going to be the first to fly
it? I wasn t sure I wanted to fly it but then I started thinking. How cool would it be
to be the first person to fly ! So I decided to volunteer. Everyone thought it was

He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place
that was once called North America. He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms,
the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war
for what little sustenance remained. The result was

hollering something unintelligible, staggers onto the stage, and falls into the third
chair. He s drunk.
Very. The crowd responds with its token applause, but he s confused and tries to give
Effie Trinket a big hug, which she barely manages to fend off.
The mayor looks distressed. Since all of this is being televised, right now District 12
is the laughingstock of Panem, and he knows it. He quickly tries to pull the attention
back to the reaping by introducing Effie Trinket.
Bright and bubbly as ever, Effie Trinket trots to the podium and gives her signature,
Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor! Her pink hair must
be a wig because her curls have shifted slightly off center since her encounter with
Haymitch. She goes on a bit about what an honor it is to be here, although everyone
knows she s just aching to get bumped up to a better district where they have proper
victors, not drunks who molest you in front of the entire nation.
Through the crowd, I spot Gale looking back at me with a ghost of a smile. As
reapings go, this one at least has a slight entertainment factor. But suddenly I am

32. The Theory Of Philip And De Vries
(Saito, Simunek, Mohanty, 2006)
Early pioneering studies on interactions between liquid water, water vapour, and heat
movement were reported by Philip and de Vries (1957), who provided a
mathematical description of liquid water and water vapour fluxes in soils driven by
both pressure head (isothermal) and soil temperature (thermal) gradients.
They derived the governing flow equation for non isothermal flow as an extension of
the Richards equation, which originally considered only the pressure head gradient.
The theory of Philip and de Vries (1957) was later extended by Nassar and Horton
(1989), who additionally considered the effect of an osmotic potential gradient on the
simultaneous movement of water, solute, and heat in soils.
Heat transport and water flow are coupled by the movement of water vapour, which
can account for significant transfer of latent energy of vaporization. Soil temperatures
may be significantly underestimated when the movement of energy associated with
vapour transport is not considered. For example, Cahill and Parlange (1998)
reported that 40 to 60% of the heat flux in the top 2 cm of a bare field soil of Yolo
silt loam was due to water vapour flow. Fourier?s law describing heat transport due
to conduction (e.g., Campbell, 1985) thus needs to be extended to include heat
transport by liquid water and water vapour flow. The general heat transport model
then considers movement of soil heat by (i) conduction, (ii) convection of sensible
heat by liquid
33. Lead Poisoning Dating From Greece And Spain
Lead Poisoning Dating back to 3000 BC large mines in Greece and Spain had
contributed to the global distribution of lead. One of the first societies to use lead
widely was the Roman Empire, even the common connection of lead towards
plumbing comes from the word plumbum which means lead in Latin. Because of
leads sweetened taste, the Romans used it in their wine which was shipped all across
Europe. Even in those times there were reports that leadcaused severe colic, anemia,
and gout (Lah). Coming to the modern days, it was discovered that lead was an
excellent additive for paint. In the 1900 s lead had become a part of the modern
lifestyle, it could be found in household items, eating utensils, children s toys, baby
cribs, and gasoline and pipes. Upon discovering the negative side effects of lead;
France, Belgium, and Austria banned lead interior paint in 1909. Then by 1922 the
League of Nations had banned lead paint completely. Despite all the records
showing how awful lead poisoning can be it wasn t until 1971 that the U.S. had
phased out lead based paint with the Lead Based Paint Poisoning Prevention Act. In
this act Title 42 Chapter 63 Subchapter IV states; (A) Prohibits the application of
lead based paint on cooking utensil, drinking utensil, or eating utensil manufactured
and distributed after January 13, 1971. (B) The Secretary of Housing and Urban

understanding can be difficult if one is not willing to learn and be open towards
new ideas that are different. Some of these issues were raised during the 1940 s
when the world was at the start of a war. People were uncertain of their future and
held themselves apart from the rest of their community because they were scared for
the possibilities of something happening to their way of living. The Sleepy Lagoon

artificial and is unlikely to persist over the long run. A Functionalist might argue
that consensus is necessary and is, therefore, automatically something desired by
all concerned. The conflict theorist contends that a consensus in a society is either
based on coercion and/or repression by the dominant group. 4. Conflict in Society
is Desirable Conflict is desirable because it makes possible social change which
may lead to more equitable distribution of wealth and power (Farley, 2000:74). 5.
Ideology A central assumption of Marxist theory is that the distribution of wealth by

characteristics of culture. This includes the norms, values, and beliefs of the culture.
The norms, values, and beliefs of the culture are such that they legitimize the control
of wealth. Everyone, the rich and poor alike, accept the cultural beliefs as just and
correct. Another term for these beliefs is IDEOLOGY. a. False Consciousness A
consensus can also be achieved when a minority group accepts an ideology that is not
in its self interest. This is false consciousness. It can occur because the dominant
group exerts disproportionate control over the sources of influence and public
opinion. It might

Media and television have created what is known as the CSI effect for jurors and
prosecutors when trying to establish a guilty verdict by the lawyer or trying to
determine whether innocent or guilty by the jury. People who watch these
television shows not only think that they are somewhat educated on what to expect
when being selected for a juror in a trial, but they also have a pre conception of what
they feel they need to see in order to provide a guilty verdict. Most of the jurors do
not have a forensic sciencebackground, but by basing their concepts and ideas around
a television show, of the type of evidence needed is mostly costly evidence like DNA,

Some cases do require the DNA test, ballistic test, and other forensic type evidence
test that is needed in order to prove that a suspect is guilty of the crime committed,
but not all cases are the same and not all cases require the hard evidence that
people who are selected for a jury expect to see. Hollywood has aided in the
glamorizing of committing crimes like rape and murder. These shows do not
necessarily turn a person into a criminal, but it does aid those who are already
criminals or weak minded people. Prosecutor jobs are becoming inherently more
difficult because of the CSI effect and the role it plays in the idealism of facts in
which jurors expect to see in a courtroom when trying to convict a criminal.
Prosecutors now have to accept the reality and notion that jurors are coming in
with a preconceived notion of what they expect to see in order to convict a
criminal of the alleged crime that was committed. It is becoming more relevant
that prosecutors rely upon the skill or capability of a victim or witness to
compellingly perform in front of a jury, regardless of the substantial evidence of the
case which includes forensic science analysis. Research has shown that 82% of
Judges are always or very often impressed by the CSI effect, 59% of Juries are
always or very often influenced by the CSI effect, and 76% of Defense lawyers

Real time PCR detection of HIV viral load
Introduction:
HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a lentivirus which is responsible for
HIV infection and eventually causes AIDS.
It s assumed that the virus has been in existence since 1930 but it s still unclear that
how the virus came into existence. There are two kinds of HIV virus, HIV 1 which
causes more severe disease and the source of transmission is a chimpanzee species
Pan troglodytes whereas HIV 2 is transmitted by Cercocebus atys, a monkey found in
West Africa (Norris, 2011).
HIV binds to the CD4+ T cells because it needs CD4+ receptor to penetrate into
cells. The virus transcribes its RNA into cDNA and then integrates its DNA into the
host DNA and replicates further. It uses the DNA of CD4+ T lymphocytes and
eventually ends up destroying them (Roberts, 2008). Once it weakens the immune
system, the body becomes vulnerable to various diseases and is exposed to life
threatening diseases known as opportunistic infections. A population of over 35
million people have HIV/AIDS and Sub Saharan Africa constitutes half of the
population (AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, 2014). Figure 1. A statistical map

church. Meursault feels like his head is pounding with blood. In this particular
situation he doesn t have to make an actual decision because he s just walking.
Throughout the novel Meursault had a lot to deal with, like talking to his neighbors
and having to listen to the horrible things his neighbors did like Raymond who beats
his girlfriend and Salamano who was old but also beat his dog. Meursault is put into
these situations where he has a chance to say something to both his neighbors but
none of it seems to bother him. When it comes to the sun Meursault lets the sun
change his emotions, he never talks about the weatherbeing too cold he can t handle
it. It s just the sun that seems to bother him the most and his mood changes all of
sudden as well All of it the sun, the smell of leather and horse dung from the
hearse, the smell of varnish and incense, and my fatigue after a night without sleep
was making it hard for me to see or think straight ( Camus 17) here Meursault is
already tired and then the sun shining down on him and all of this is making him
notice every little thing that is happening around him even the smells of certain
things and he s not thinking straight. The sun changed his whole view of his
surroundings , some people might feel a bit tired and hot but Meursault seems to
let the sun affect him strongly to the point where he d do anything to get away
from it. The sun affects Meursault s decision because during the killing of the Arab
It occurred to me that all I had to do was turn around and that would be the end of
it. But the whole beach, throbbing in the sun, was pressing on my back ( Camus 58)
we can see Meursault describing the sun in great details and he even said that he
could have just turned around and left but the sun seemed to control him and made
him
42. Children Must Become Competent in Reading Before They
Have...
Introduction
Writing has existed as far back as the 7th millennium BC and the 4th millennium BC,
it first started with mnemonic symbols which later became a system of ideograms.
In the early days people wrote on different things, such as silk, rocks, wood, papyrus etc.
It wasn t Until the 15th century were parchment or vellum (calfskin) were used as
pages for the first books.
A book can be said to be a set of written or printed made of ink and paper usually
fastened together or coupled electronically (e books) for the purpose of storing or
recording information. Collins and Cheek (1999) explained that reading involves a
complex thought process in order to understand a writing or printed message.
According to Rubin (2002), reading is a total integrative process that starts with the
reader and includes the affective, perceptual, and cognitive domains. Okebukola
(2004) affirms that,by reading books, humans have the tools to transmit knowledge
from one generation to another; it allows one to listen to the wisdom of those who
have lived in the past and so on. This even expressed by religious prophets. The
Apostle Paul in the bible admonished Timothy study to show yourself approved unto
God (11 timothy 2:15). Islam values acquisition of knowledge (literacy, reading, etc.)
As very important The holy Qur an reveals that the first communication ( between
Allah and Prophet Muhammad was intellectual.
Douglas (2000) asserts that children must become competent in reading before they
43. Gender, Gender And Gender Discrimination
Over the ages men have always dominated the workforce since it was their humane
trait to provide for their families. It wasn t until Florence Nightingale revolutionized
the field of nursing by affirming the natural feminine qualities of care, nurture and
gentle. The U.S. is experiencing a slow but steady increase of men within the nursing
profession (Evans, 1997); however, integrating masculine and feminine roles still
poses a big problem. Male nurses consist 9.6% of the nursing population, precipitating
genderinequity (MacWilliams, Schmidt, Bleich, 2013; U.S. Census Bureau, 2013).
Unfortunately male nurses have become victims of discriminatory stereotypes
which deter the recruitment of males into the profession (Meyers, 2003; O Lynn,
2004; Rajacich, Kane, Williston, Cameron, 2013). Barriers of equality are
impeded by the historical origin of modern nursing and to achieve integration in a
feminine dominated field remodeling nursing to include equality for both genders.
Selecting this particular nursing issue was a very dear topic to me since I
constitute the gender minority within my nursing class. Prior to researching this
topic I had evaluated my reason to become a nurse and found that I too struggled to
deal with society s role acceptance as a male nurse. Nursing was not my primary
career choice however after evaluating my career options while factoring marriage I
arrived at nursing. It was not easy telling my friends and family of my plan to
become nurse, knowing

45. Cyber Warfare And Cyber Crime
Cyber Warfare is the use of computer technology to disrupt the activities of a state or
organization, especially the deliberate attacking of information systems for strategic
or military purposes (Oxford Dictionary, 2016). While this definition may seem
fitting on a global basis the idea of cyber crime can encompass any valuable
information of an individual, company, government, or military entity. The term
hackercame about in the early 80 s defining a couple of people where were
proficient at manipulating computers. However, in 2016 the Oxford Dictionary
defines hacker as a person who uses computers to gain unauthorized access to data .
In the early stages of cyber crime hackers spread programs called worms, computer
viruses and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having a set of technologies that are more globally used, provided hackers the ability
to infect computers on a much wider scale, thus having a larger impact on society.
Common technologies allowed programmers to target these technologies, such as
email, on a significantly wider scale. Gaining access to address books and sending
out email to large groups of people, known as spamming. Programmers also learned
how to send out email as someone else, known as spoofing. Contained in these
emails might be instructions from your bank to change your password. Users
would click on the links, be rerouted to a web page that looked like their bank, but
was actually a page developed by the hackers. Once the users entered their user ID
and password, the hackers had all the information they needed to access the users
accounts.
In the early 2000 s new criminal opportunities arose by attacking Web sites. Denial
of Service (DoS) attacks took place by having large numbers of computers
accessing a Web site at the same time. This provided cyber criminals with two
things, global visibility, and financial opportunity. As technologies evolve and
advance, so do the abilities of the hackers. Now, the goal is to stay one step ahead. It
is not a matter of if a system can get hacked, but rather a question of when.
Prior to the introduction of the internet, being able to access a system network could
take a tremendous effort and the effects were
