In conclusion, the potato cube with the highest surface area to volume ratio (the
1x1x1 cube) had the fastest rate of diffusion as it had the largest percentage increase
in mass. While all the other cubes of potato had larger increases in mass at face
value compared to the smallest cube, the smallest cube had the largest overall gain in
percentage. The results support my hypothesis that the smallest cube will have a

Without the millions of chemical reactions that occur every day, life would be
completely different. An important class of common reactions includes those which
involve the simultaneous transfer of electrons between chemicals, commonly referred

Abstract/Purpose:
The main objective of this experiment was to determine how different factors, such as
the type of enzyme and the temperatures that each of the enzymes were exposed to,
could affect the rate of enzyme activity. In order to measure this, a potato enzyme and
liver enzyme were placed in four different temperatures for 24 hours. Each enzyme
was then placed in a test tube with hydrogen peroxide and the rate of enzyme activity
was measured. The result was that the rate of enzyme activity decreased as the
temperature increased for the liver enzyme, but increased for the potato enzyme.
Introduction/Hypothesis:
An enzyme is usually a protein that works as a catalyst, which is anything that helps
to speed up, or catalyze, the chemical reaction (Bolster Moss, n.d.). To speed up a
chemical reaction, enzymes lower the activation energy, which is the initial energy
required for a reaction to occur by applying heat. However, enzymes are very
substrate specific, only acting on specific reactants, which are the substrates, and
consequently, enzymes are selective in the chemical reactions that they catalyze.
Since an enzyme is a protein, each enzyme has a specific amino acid sequence, which
determines its shape and eventually, the reactions that it will catalyze. In this way, an

Produced by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787, Don Giovanni is regarded as one
the best operas ever made. The piece is based on the legend of Don Juan, an illusory
libertine and seducer of women (Kerns, 2010). At first, Mozart s opera seems more
like a story of the romantic adventures of a dissolute nobleman and his disgrace.
However, there is much more to Don Giovanni than just a series of events and serious
laughs, just as the protagonist is much more than a notorious, single minded, and
unprincipled seducer. Closer examination of the piece reveals its core themes of
social classes and divisions as depicted by Leporello s complaints about his servitude
to his employer in the first scene (Mozart, Fisher, Ponte, 2007). The play also touches
on vital human traits and principles, including loyalty, faithfulness, and sincerity.
More importantly, Don Giovanni centers on the ambiguity intrinsic to human
relations, the intricate connection between life and death, and the interminable
tension between love and the risk of its extermination.
Don Giovanni can be characterized as a comic opera due to its indulgence with tragic
themes, such as crime and murder, in an astoundingly funny manner. By definition,

supported when the speaker compares himself to the snow to say With no expression,

Cultural capital, or a lack thereof, can give insight into someone s socio economic
status. Throughout our relationship, Germeka has asked me a lot about my
experience at college. She asks questions like how much it cost to go to college,
how I pay for it, if my parents send me money, and if I have a job. The first time we
discussed college she asked me if I got paid to be a student at UNC Chapel Hill

I applied to college because I had grown up around people who went to college, I
saw my brothers go through the application process, I went to a school that pushed
everyone to take classes that prepared you for a higher education, and many other
factors. I gained cultural capital from my location in my family, class and school.

her age. This lack of cultural capital could keep her from applying to college for
many reasons. She may not apply or attempt to attend college out of anxiety over

Between the books, You Just Don t Understand by Deborah Tannen, and the book
Amusing Ourselves to Death, by Neil Postman I prefer the book You Just Don t
Understand. I prefer Deborah Tannen s book because her claims about the hierarchy
in men s conversation versus the need for inclusivity in women s conversation are
interesting, as I had not acknowledged this significance in communication between

In Tannen s book, she starts off by addressing the differences between men and
women conversate, then shifts her attention to offer a solution towards the end of the
book. In chapters one through nine, Tannen tells the reader of the differences in
conversation men and women have, and how they came to be. One example is the
goals men and women have in life. Men s goal in life is to strive for independence in
conversation, and avoid failure, which according to Tannen mean that they come up
with their own ideas, not following others. While the goal for women is to try and
preserve intimacy. In order to receive affection, women try to find similarities in each

In my first reading of The Old Maid, I found it hard to dissect the character of
Delia. Edith Wharton made me work hard to figure Delia out by not spelling her out
directly, but bringing her on gradually. After subsequent readings however, I saw this
story as a sort of coming of age story about Delia Lovell and not about an old maid.
Although the title is surely meant to reflect our feelings for the character of
Charlotte, whom it seemed was destined to become an old maid in the eyes of
Delia, Wharton uses the character of Charlotte as does Delia, to tell a story of a
woman who gets a second chance and does everything in her power not to mess it up.

Ironically her choices are maid for her by her cousin Delia, acting on her own

American Beauty, released in 1999, was a tragic comedy, created by Sam Mendes.
The movie had audiences questioning the ideal American family. You see the usual
midlife crisis that most people go through but watching further uncovers a deeper
conflict of feeling oppressed with what society considers a normal life. The movie has
many connecting themes through plot, characterization, and cinematography and
these themes carry well throughout the movie. The main themes are listed
accordingly, appearance versus reality, loneliness versus feeling connected, denialand
repression, and beauty.
A theme that is consistent throughout the movie is of empty promises of materialism.
From afar the Burnhams seem to have the American Dream: a nice house in the

Many say that fighting for your rights is an act of heroism, but that was not the
case with the Molly Maguires. The Molly Maguires were miners in the late 19th
century who believed they were treated unfairly and deserved better rights. Their

situation may have been like. The movie shows the lack of respect the supervisors

objective was not to only stop the mollies but to also make them go to trial and be
judged guilty, which eventually leads to their deaths. It shows that the company
did not care about their workers, but only the money they got from their labor.
They had small children working in places that they could be crushed. At the time
they still did not have a law that could protect children, it was later implemented in
1938 that prohibited child labor. In fact, we know the mining company did not
care for their workers because in the scene where Mr.Raines dies of black lung
disease the leader of the mollies takes action into his own hands. They go and
destroy the store because Mr.Raines has done so much for the mine, but on the day
of his funeral he didn t even have a proper suit (since it couldn t be afforded). It
