This document summarizes a study on using a nitrifying membrane bioreactor (MBR) to remove 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a common endocrine disrupting compound. The study found that a commercially available nitrifying enrichment culture could biologically degrade EE2 in batch experiments. Continuous EE2 removal was also achieved in a lab-scale MBR. Nitrification was identified as the driving force for EE2 removal. The MBR system successfully removed EE2 from water to low ng/L levels and could potentially be used as a polishing step for wastewater treatment plant effluents.
