Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Rendering The graphics in a 3D action game are rendered in real-time by the
computer's video card. This means the graphics are updated so quickly,
there is no noticeable delay experienced by the user.
http://www.techterms.com/definition/realtime
To render something means
that it loads another part of
the world or map when you
look in that direction.
This shows us the difference
between rendering and not
rendering.
Normal Map This is a technique used for faking the lighting of bumps and dents.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping
By using normal mapping it
means that it can make
things have different
textures so it looks 3-D.
This shows us what
normal mapping can do
to chane ow things
look.
Entity
An entity is a grouping of things w ith rules or data in common. An
entity of ten represents a group of people (eg children, applicants,
stakeholders) but it can also represent a group of objects (eg
textbooks), activities (eg assignments) or concepts (eg school
terms).http://docs.oracle.com/html/E27551_01/Content/Data%20model

UV Map UV texturing permits polygons that make up a 3D object to be painted
with colour from an image. The image is called a UV texture map, but it's
just an ordinary image.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_mapping
UV-Map means that it makes
up a 3-D image that is
coloured form an image.
This shows how all the textures come
together but you have to do each section on
its own first.
Procedural
Texture
The term procedural refers to the process that computes a particular
function In computer graphics, procedural generation is generating
content algorithmically rather than manually. In video games this means
graphic content for a game can be created by the host computer, instead
of pre-rendered artwork being included with game package.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_generation
This basically means that the
content of the game can be
created by the host
computer, rather than
artwork included with the
game.
This image shows how each section is
added separately and is also shaped
separately.
Physics A physics engine is computer software that provides an approximate
simulation of certain physical systems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_engine
This is computer software
that simulates certain
physical systems.
This image shows how a
physics engine works. It
shows how the car can
get damaged if it crashed
into a wall.
Collision Collision detection typically refers to the computational problem of
detecting the intersection of two or more objects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collision_detection
This means that it detects
when to objects hit each
other.
This image shows how the collision
detection would work. It shows us where
about the ball will hit the wall.

This is just a way of
smoothing things.
This image shows how anti-aliasing
works. For example it
shows how all the edges are
rough when not using anti-aliasing.
LoD – Level
of Detail
Level of detail is a general design term for video game landscapes
in w hich closer objects are rendered with more polygons than
objects that are farther away.
http://www.techopedia.com/definition/11791/level-of-detail-lod
Level of Detail means how
much detail they would put
into objects.
This image shows the different
steps they take to make the
object have a lot of detail
towards it.
Animation Animation is picture that has more than one frame and manages to depict
movement of some form or another.

that is made up of pixels.
This is an image to show what a sprite image looks like.
Scene
A cut scene or event scene (sometimes in-game cinematic or in-game
movie) is a sequence in a video game over which the player has no or only
limited control, breaking up the gameplay and used to advance the plot,
strengthen the main character's development, introduce characters, and
provide background information, atmosphere, dialogue, and clues.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutscene
A cut scene is where
something would happen
that you had no control over.
This video is a video to show what cut scene would look in game.
