Individual Assignment 2- Iconography and Symbolism

  • 1. INDIVIDUAL PROJECT #2 de Beaufort Fowling scene from the tomb of Nebamun,Thebes,Egypt. 18th Dynasty ca 1400-1350 BCE.Fresco on dryplaster,2’x8” high,British Museum,London. 1. Explain the visual iconography of the work. A.Identify and comment on how it incorporates the following:  hieratic scale  composite view  idealism (1 paragraph min 3 sentences) B. Describe the meaning of the poses and how they are significant and/or similar/different from previous representations. (1 paragraph min 3 sentences) C. Comment on the medium used, the location, and purpose of the work. (1 paragraph min 3 sentences) 2. Describe and explain the symbolic meaning of the river depicted and it’s significance to Egyptian religion and spirituality (especially within the context of a burial image). Include in your answer a description of the Egyptian belief in the afterlife. (1 paragraph min 4 sentences) 3. Comment on how contemporary life/family structure/social structure is similar/different to ancient Egypt. How would the above image be depicted differently given the current historical context, if at all? (1 paragraph min 4 sentences)
