Loss of Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, including genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity. Loss of biodiversity is occurring at an alarming rate, with up to 20,000 species estimated to go extinct each year. Habitat destruction and fragmentation due to human activities like agriculture, construction, and urbanization are major drivers of biodiversity loss. Other threats include overexploitation of species, introduction of exotic species, pollution, climate change, and poaching. Widespread biodiversity decline poses serious risks to ecosystem balance, food security, natural disaster mitigation, and could ultimately threaten human survival if left unaddressed. Conservation efforts are needed to protect the estimated 24% of mammals and 12% of birds currently considered globally
Loss of wetlands = Loss of biodiversity
Wetlands are home to a vast amount of biodiversity but 87% of the world's wetlands have been lost in the last 300 years due to pollution, drainage, and land conversion. This loss of wetlands is contributing to the loss of over one million animal and plant species that are now threatened with extinction. Wetlands provide essential services worth $47 trillion annually such as carbon storage, pollutant removal, jobs, and support of biodiversity including reptiles, amphibians, water birds, and mammals. Efforts are needed to end biodiversity loss and restore degraded wetlands for the health of the climate, economies, and ecosystems.

Meeting increasing food demands through intensive agriculture has prioritized provisioning services over other ecosystem services, contributing to issues like water scarcity, climate change, and habitat loss. Sustainable agricultural policies and practices are needed to balance food production with conservation of ecosystem services.

INVESTMENT IN AGROECOLOGY

Overfishing in the Gulf of California has led to the depletion of many fish populations and disruption of the marine ecosystem. The gulf supports over 700 species of fish and is an important food and economic source for nearly 6 million people. However, unsustainable fishing practices like catching too many adult fish and excessive bycatch have reduced fish populations by 52-90% in many areas of the gulf. This overfishing threatens the livelihoods of coastal communities and the health of the ecosystem. Stronger enforcement of fishing regulations and monitoring is needed to promote sustainable fishing and protect the Gulf of California.

Major threats to aquatic biodiversity include habitat loss, invasive species, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation, which are exacerbated by human population growth. The greatest marine biodiversity is found at coral reefs, estuaries, and on the deep ocean floor. While protections for whales have led to recovery of some populations, others are still threatened by illegal hunting. Invasive species like the Asian swamp eel and lionfish degrade ecosystems, while activities such as agriculture, development, and waste dumping pollute waterways and oceans. Climate change poses a growing threat through sea level rise, warming, and acidification. Overfishing has driven many fish species toward extinction.
FISH PRODUCTION
Fish farming is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture. Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. Worldwide, the most important fish species used in fish farming are carp, salmon, tilapia and catfish.
There is an increasing demand for fish and fish protein, which has resulted in widespread overfishing in wild fisheries. Fish farming offers fish marketers another source. However, farming carnivorous fish, such as salmon, does not always reduce pressure on wild fisheries, since carnivorous farmed fish are usually fed fishmeal and fish oil extracted from wild forage fish. The global returns for fish farming recorded by the FAO in 2008 totalled 33.8 million tonnes worth about $US 60 billion.

Within intensive and extensive aquaculture methods, there are numerous specific types of fish farms; each has benefits and applications unique to its design.
Cage system[edit source | editbeta]
Giant gourami is often raised in cages in central Thailand
Fish cages are placed in lakes, bayous, ponds, rivers or oceans to contain and protect fish until they can be harvested. The method is also called "off-shore cultivation[7] " when the cages are placed in the sea. They can be constructed of a wide variety of components. Fish are stocked in cages, artificially fed, and harvested when they reach market size. A few advantages of fish farming with cages are that many types of waters can be used (rivers, lakes, filled quarries, etc.), many types of fish can be raised, and fish farming can co-exist with sport fishing and other water uses. Cage farming of fishes in open seas is also gaining popularity. Concerns of disease, poaching, poor water quality, etc., lead some to believe that in general, pond systems are easier to manage and simpler to start. Also, past occurrences of cage-failures leading to escapes, have raised concern regarding the culture of non-native fish species in open-water cages. Even though the cage-industry has made numerous technological advances in cage construction in recent years, the concern for escapes remains valid.

Recently, copper alloys have become important netting materials in aquaculture. Copper alloys are antimicrobial, that is, they destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and other microbes. In the marine environment, the antimicrobial/algaecidal properties of copper alloys prevent biofouling, which can briefly be described as the undesirable accumulation, adhesion, and growth of microorganisms, plants, algae, tube worms, barnacles, mollusks, and other organisms.

Agenda of the 5th NENA Soil Partnership meeting
The Fifth meeting of the Near East and North African (NENA) Soil Partnership will take place from 1-2 April 2019 in Cairo, Egypt. The objectives of the meeting are to consolidate the NENA Soil Partnership, review the work plan, organize activities to establish National Soil Information Systems, agree to launch a Regional Soil Laboratory for NENA, and strengthen networking. The meeting agenda includes discussions on soil information systems, a soil laboratory network, and implementing the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management. The performance of the NENA Soil Partnership will also be assessed and future strategies developed.

GLOSOLAN - Mission, status and way forward
This document summarizes the proceedings of the first meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN). GLOSOLAN was established to harmonize soil analysis methods and strengthen the performance of laboratories through standardized protocols. The meeting discussed the role of National Reference Laboratories in promoting harmonization, and how GLOSOLAN is structured with regional networks feeding into the global network. Progress made in 2018 included registering over 200 laboratories, assessing capacities and needs, and establishing regional networks. The work plan for 2019 includes further developing regional networks, standard methods, a best practice manual, and the first global proficiency testing. The document concludes by outlining next steps to launch the regional network for North Africa and the Near East.

The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

Small Scale Fishers • The actual fishers and the dependents of Marine SSF will amount to about 50 million in Asia. • In South Asian countries it is supposed to be a very crowded community on the coast. • They are traditional people, living and fishing there for hundreds and even thousands of years. • They always used beach landing crafts.
- 4. Some Basic Truth • Fisher men are harvesters. • To be precise: hunters • So they were very conscious to save the resource. • All SSF are subsistence fishers; not profit makers. • Fishes are migratory in nature. • It is largely a family economy.
