1. Advert Analysis
Oasis – Lord Don’t Slow Me Down
This advert was taken from the
back page of Uncut. It is a full-page spread
on a glossy magazine therefore making it
a very premium advertisement. Often this
magazines can cost anywhere from $5
upwards making it fairly expensive to
buy. So this often limits the consumers of
the magazines to hardcore fans of the
genre rather than casual readers who pick
it up in a similar manner to a new paper.
This is a pretty good way of funneling the
audience in a specific focus group of
people who are only interested in
rock/indie music therefore meaning that
most of the people who see the advert
will have some, if not a lot of interest
within the band.
Moving on the advert itself it is
advertising Oasis’s latest DVD and CD
combo. The DVD is various recordings
from their live shows and the CD contains
all the songs from those performances.
This clearly means that the CD as been
out for a while as there has already been a
full series of concerts for them to record
footage from. Looking straight at the advert we can see a caricature of the main
singer, which is now somewhat of a iconic image for the band. The glasses being
warn he is clearly a reference to the stereotypical hippy due to the glasses and
the medium length hair cut. This itself could be an attempt to draw in some of
the fans of that genre of music or even the Beatles fans as they may be mislead by
the cover thinking is something else. As mentioned in many of my previous
analyses we can see the record labels influence as the lead singers portrait is
taking up a large amount of the adverts estate. This is so that the singer’s face
can raise some brand appeal for the band himself or herself. The lead singer is
always front up for a band and that is the main reason they are also know as lead
artists because of how iconic they can become in the case the band hits it big. So
it is no surprise to see the lead singers face taking up a large section of advert in
an attempt to once again drag more of the potential audience in.
Looking further up the advert we can also see the band’s name is big, bold
clear to read text. Once again it is important to make sure that the audience
knows what they are looking at and this is one way to do it. It can also help
people who are already fans as they will see the name and immediately get
drawn in to find out more information.
Finally we have this huge “DVD out now” label in the center of the advert.
This is advertising number one as it is of the highest importance to make sure
that the customer knows what you are selling and when they can get their hands
2. on it. Failure to do so may mean that the audience is unable to find and that can
lead to them losing interest. Thankfully we clearly have the DVD out now as well
as link to their site where the customers could presumably order the DVD along
with the albums.
Moving onto the genre conventions for a rock/indie band. First of all we
have this strangely artistic advert and album cover. We have all these black and
white drawings and it gives it a slightly different vibe to the normal album cover
or advertisement. This itself is a convection of the Indie genre who often want to
appear to be unique and their own entity and they will achieve this by employing
different artistic styles to stand out. We also have the entire band in the
advertisement with the lead singer being the main focus point. Again this is often
convection within rock advertisements by having the lead man in the front with
all the other members in the background. This is due to the fact the lead singer
almost always gets the most attention by standing at the front of the stage while
everyone else is behind him.
Overall it is a pretty successful advert as it grabs pre-existing fans and
drags them in with strange, eye-catching visuals and which also have the side
effect of catching the attention of non-fans. It also gives all the important
information to the potential audience by telling them the release date (now) and
where they can go to find more information. It also plays pretty closely to the
genre conventions of both the rock and the indie genre, which again will draw in
the fans from the two genres.
