3. Aerosmith is a hard rock band if it was immediacy clear
from the album cover and logo planted upon it. That
genre itself brings along it’s own collection of tropes.
That first trope is the idea of this voyeuristic attitudes.
Yet looking at this cover we quickly notice that it has
very little erotic images on it. Starting off the band has
knocked some of the very built in tropes of the rock
genre.
There isn’t only that trope in the rock genre another
topic that is covered across many songs and different
bands is this idea of conflict especially romantic conflict.
This is covered by this cover as we can see an x-ray of a
knife in a man’s back near to his heart. Obviously, this is
a metaphor for being betrayed and seems this is a balled
album its very likely that a lot of the songs cover the
topic of betrayal. So looking at it in that respect the
album cover represents the contents pretty well.
Another main aspect of the
cover is the band’s logo
plastered right across the
bottom left hand side of the
cover. Looking at marketing
theory it is always important
to make sure that their
products can be recognized
so that people are more likely
to pick up the product as they
recognize the band.
On top of that Aerosmith is a fairly large and well
known band so there image will be noticeable. To
many people even those who haven't heard from the
band so using their logo in such a big way taking up a
proportion of the cover real estate this means that it
will be recognizable off the self increasing sales.
4. Following on from that we can urged see this sense of
rebellion from the use of the knife. As mentioned
earlier a trope of the rock music genre is this idea of
conflict. The main target audience is teenagers and
adults and up till around the 40 mark. This audience
will still be dealing with various romantic issues. So in
order to reach your audience and sell more copies.
Therefore using these themes it will reach a wider
audience helping the album to reach to people
therfore boosting the sales.
Overall it is clear that this album has been successful as they saw great sales and critical
a claim. Obviously, the songs were good and that helped the albums sales on top of
Aerosmith being a popular band but it always helps to have good marketing arm and to
get your audiences attention. Without a good cover it is possible for the band to miss
out on quite few sales. So when I get around to making my own cover I can take this into
mind and use these tropes to improve the quality of my cover.
