What The film starts with Harry potter, a seemingly normal boy, being told he is a wizard and being accepted into Hogwarts school. During
the year, Harry and his friends find a large three headed dog guarding a trap door. They want to find what is being protected in the
castle so Hermione does research and discovers that it is the philosophers stone, which s used to give people the elixir of life which
will grant the drinker immortality. Harry gets suspicious of professor snape and believes that he wants to steal the stone for himself.
Harry then has an encounter with Voldemort and they think that snape wants to steal it for him.
Why They believe that Voldemort wants to steal it in order to get stronger and to re-gain immortality. This will bring him bac into power.

Red, White and Black colours.
Red is the main colour for this cover which tells
us the theme for the magazine is Horror. This
has been used because red is associated with
blood and violence. White has been used for
the font colour as it stands out better over the
red background. This makes the film title clear
and bold.
There are lots of dark shadows which make the
poster look more sinister and sets a dark tone
that creates tension to the audience.
The names of celebrities are in a different
bolder font which makes them clearer and tells
people who they can read about.
The clown's face is partially covered which is
used to make him seem scarier because it feels
more dangerous if the audience can’t see the
villain properly.
Balloons have been used because they are
related to clowns but also because they are
reminiscent of the original IT movie.
They have advertised how good their film
reviews are to attract people to read their
magazine. It also says it is “the smarted movie
magazine” to try encourage people to buy this
product over others.
Pennywise’s face is in the center of the image
because he is the main villain. He is also looking
towards the camera with his head tilted down
slightly with a slight smile. This seems more
uncomfortable and sinister.
They have included a quote that compared this
film to another, popular horror film. This will
attract an audience who are fans of The Shining
and will attract an older audience since The
Shining is an 80s horror film. The shining is also
seen as being a very successful film so having a
comparison makes the film more enticing.
Existing Product
The title of the film is incorporated into the
images around. It isn’t as clear as most
magazines would be which shows they have
focused a lot of the aesthetics of their cover.
They have used this as a selling point for
their magazine.
The main character of the film is centered on
the cover which shows to the audience
clearly what the film is about.
The poster appeals to people who have
watched and are fans of the film. They have
relied of the images to do this. People who
haven’t seen the film won’t recognise the
pictures. They don’t have a lot of text
because you are drawn in by the center
image. They have also included small
graphics in the background that are
references to the film. However the nice
colour scheme and art graphics may make
the film look appealing to a new audience.
Colour theme of purple, orange-pink, blue,
black and white.
The brighter colours go nicely together which
makes it aesthetically pleasing. Orange was a
key colour in the film, so this cover fits with
the movies theme. Soft blues and pinks were
also seen throughout the film. The colors of
the poster are also muted and toned down
which fits with the earthy tones used in the
film.
They clearly show the title of the magazine
by having it in the top center of the page in a
a white circle. They then describes the
content of the magazine underneath. By
having this title in simple black and white
colours, it doesn’t distract from the image on
the front.
It doesn’t include any other information
about the other content in the magazine.
This means that people might be turned
away from buying because they won’t know
if they are interested in the content.
Existing Product
Clear bold text that states the
name on the film.
Bold Masthead that tell you
what the magazine is.
Saying that it is the “film of the
month” will make readers
interested in going to see it
because it is popular.
A large picture from the film that
covers one of the pages is
common in double page spreads.
This shows that it is advertising
spider-man and will be easy to
find and pick out when flipping
through a magazine, since an
entire page with the character on
is hard to miss. The picture also
shows the action genre since the
characters stance and costume
show this.
They have ratings along the top
which show what ratings they
give and what the mean. At the
bottom of the page, you can see
they gave it five stars which is a
must see. This will make an
audience more intrigued to see
the film if they can see that it
has been well received.
Existing Product This double page spread also has an image that fills one of
the pages. This page has a large image of David Bowie who
is the artist from the shoulders up. He is looking directly at
the camera which engages with the audience. The image is
in black and white which was most likely a stylistic choice
since it is reminiscent of the 1977 “Heroes” album cover.
They will have also been promoting a new brand image for
the artist since this follows a black and white theme. The
also chose to include an old picture of Bowie from his prime
years when he was a big Rockstar. This could have been
done to appeal to older readers who remember Bowie's
fame and success from the days. It is also showing his old
character who people remember and fell in love with.
There is a quote in bold at the top of the second page that
is being used as a title. This shows they have an interview
with the artist and the quote is vague but intriguing which
will encourage people to read on.
The names of the people included in producing the
interview are in bold in the first paragraph. This means that
they will stand out to the target audience of music fans.
This will engage their interest without them having to read
it first. David Bowies name is repeatedly in bold on this
page since he is the main focus. Since he was very popular
artist, his name would have encouraged a lot of people to
buy and read the magazine.
Text is laid out in columns which makes the
article more simplistic and shows It as being
neat.
The text is on the right hand side of the page
which is different to most since it usually
appears on the left. This could have been
done so that readers of the article can look
at the picture first before reading. It might
catch people interest faster if they see the
picture.
Research Summary
In my research I have learned how to create a magazine page or cover that successfully promotes a film or artist. I
have also learned some of the common conventions that are used in print like having a consistent colour theme and
bold masthead with the title of the magazine. I have also learned how fonts can be used effectively to portray the
right message to the audience. I learned that they will always have a picture of one of the main characters from the
film in the center of the image. I will make sure to include bold text on my product as his shows makes it clearer to
the audience. I will make sure to pick a colour theme to use as this makes them look nicer. I also want to make sure I
use a color scheme that relates to the film.

Final Choices
Final choices
I chose this font for the movie logo because it is worn and damaged. This fits with the theme of
the film as it is set on a deserted island. The damaged pattern also shows that it is a survival
film and the bold lettering fits with the film genre as it is an intense adventure/mystery film.
I chose this font for the magazine logo because it is bold and simple, but also more interesting. I
waned something simple and bold because it is a film magazine so I wanted the font to be like
this.
I chose this colour scheme because they relate to the plot of the film. The film is based on
an island so the blues and yellow fit with this. I also this that these colours look nice
together and the yellow stands out with the blue.
Basic Font -
Baskerville
I hose this font because it is simple and will go with any fonts and design ideas that I have.
I also feel that it is a little more interesting that some of the other simple fonts like Calibri
or Arial.
Final choices
I am also thinking of choosing this colour scheme because I think that the colours look nice
together and are aesthetically pleasing. I think that the pink accent colour will go really well
with the orange and will look good for the magazine.
Bad
signal
I would like to use this for the films logo because the island isn’t real and its
actually made from technology in a lab. His gives it a broken look which matches
the tone of the film.
Cinematic language
I would like to use this font for the title of the magazine because it is bold
and it looks very cinematic which will work since it is going to be a film
magazine.
nasalization
I think this font will look good for the film logo because it look very
sci-fi and I think this will fit for the science parts of the film.

Contingency
What can go wrong? What can you do if it does?
Loosing work from not saving. Make sure to save onto one drive or keep saving regularly. If you haven’t
then restart from the last point saved and then make sure to save into one
drive.
Bad quality pictures Make sure to take plenty of photos. Then crop out a mistake or use a
different photo.
WIFI stops working. Do other work that doesn’t require internet or plan out your next steps on
paper to continue with once WIFI is back.
Mac breaks Make sure work is saved onto one drive and continue on another device.
Camera breaks Use a different piece of equipment like phone.
Model not showing Reschedule for another day or see if anyone else will be able to fill in.
Getting COVID Using something else for the modelling like a figure.
Risk Assessment
What could be a risk to you, others or the
equipment?
How can you make sure that doesn’t happen? What
will you do if it does?
Eye strain Make sure to take breaks from screens.
Muscle strain Make sure to take breaks and move about to avoid hurting self.
Spilling drinks on equipment Make sure to keep drinks away from computers.
Dropping camera Make sure to wear camera strap.
fatigue Make sure you don’t work for too long by taking breaks.
Slipping on water Clean up water if it spills.
Slipping on the floor. Make sure models are wearing shoes so they wont fall.
Reflection – Magazine Cover
Some of the techniques I have used are applying filters to the photograph to
make it look better. I made the photo black and white and increased the
exposure and clarity. I also added drop shadow to the circle shape to make it
look more dynamic and less flat on the page. This makes it appear as though it
has been stuck on the cover which I think is effective. I think that so far my
poster is looking nice. This use of colour works well together and the
placement of the text for the Heading and the information looks good. I also
think that the black and white photo looks nice as it makes the pinks and
oranges stand out better. I think that to improve my project I should change
the font for the title of the film as I don’t think the current one is very effective.
I will be looking for a different one next and changing that. I would also like to
decide how I’m going to present the film title in the most effective way. Once I
have the film title font and placement decided this product will be finished.
Reflection – Double page spread
For this double page spread I have used content aware fill to
separate the subject from the background and I applied a blur
effect to the background layer. This created a nice effect that
makes the subject of the photo stand out in the center and
improves the quality of the photo. I also edited the photo by
making the pinks brighter and adjusting the contrast, clarity,
highlights and saturation. The parts of this product that I like
are the shapes like the orange square in the corner and the
circles that I have places behind the text on the right side of
the page. I think that they look effective and make the right
side interesting without adding too much and distracting from
the article. I think that the title on the left needs to be
changed. I need to change the font and the colour but first I
need to decide what the font for the Film name will be. I also
want to change the title at the top of the article and think up a
quote to put on the left. I want to to be a quote from one of
the cast members interviewed in the article.
Reflection - poster
For the poster I have also separated the main subject from the background. I did this so I
could place other images behind him. I have added mask layers to all the pictures of
people to isolate them and for the two on either side I have lowered the opacity as I think
it looks more effective than leaving it full. I think I like the use of coloured lighting in the
photography because It fits with the colour scheme used for the magazine and looks more
interesting. I also like the placement of the people behind however I’m not decided on
which photos to use as I have a few others to choose from. I think that changing the
copyright colour will help improve it and more effective use of pictures could also improve
the look. I still need to add the title of the film and choose a nice font for this.
Production
Using your plans, produce:
• A synopsis for your film
• A magazine front cover, promoting the film
• Additional advertising to promote the film
Synopsis
Three people are living normal, separate lives until they find themselves thrown together on a desert Island. They don’t know why they’re there and
don’t remember who put them there. They have been put on the Island by scientists who are creating strange weapons that are monsters, strange
plants and poisonous foods. This project is called “Project 9”. The Three find themselves facing many strange tasks that put them in life threatening
situations as they collect clues that they think will get them off the island, but after finding somebody who has been on the island, they realise that this
isn’t what it seems. His memory is fading from being stuck their for so any years in the toxic environment. They found some of the similar clues in his
house and decide they need to jog his memory so he can help them. As he starts to say things they notice him talking about the sea and describing that
there is something out there. They decide to make a boat out of what materials they have and two of them set off out to sea. After a while of rowing
and getting tired they reach the end which is a large blue wall. This is when they realise that they are just in one large room in a constructed island.
When they talk to the man they find out that the people who put them in there had no intention of having them get out again. They then begin the
escape mission to save themselves and to find the people who put them there.

Project 9 Adventure
Side scroller – the avatar is one of the main characters from the film. You run through the island
landscape and have to get to the next levels by facing different monsters from the film. I will include a
health bar and unlockable items that will assist the player as the levels get harder.
3rd person adventure – you have to walk around with characters of the film and find clues to uncover
the truth about the island. There will be speech bubbles that communicates with the other characters,
monsters that you need to fight and plants to avoid. Each level will unlock different parts of the map.
Strategy game – you need to fight off the creatures and monsters and
collect hearts for health and clue sheets to progress to the next level.
Would be an overhead game and you would have three hearts of
health.
Research
Super Mario bros – This is a 2D side scroller game that focuses on completing levels. The later style
of the game is very detailed, but the earlier versions were pixel art . The game is set in a fantasy
kingdom that has been invaded by the turtles sent by bowser. Bowser turns them into inanimate
objects such as bricks and plants. It has simple animations that include jumping and running. You
use this to collect mushrooms, break the bricks and attack the bad guys.
The HUD is very simple. It shows a coin
collection counter, number of hearts and
a number at the top which will show
how far along in the level you are.
The background is very simple
especially since this is an early version
of the game. It is mostly blue sky with
some small hill and cloud details.
The art style has been done with
pixel art which means that
everything has been painted square
by square. The design shown here
is very simplistic since they are
using a smaller number of pixels.
This mean that there isn't as much
detail in the characters. The game
is 2D which works with this side
scrolling camera view.
We see all the action from the side angle. The
camera and person stays in the same place and
its just the background that moves. This means
it is a side scroller game. Mario also has quite a
limited amount of movement. He can only
walk either side or jump. Mario will jump on
the enemies to kill them but if he walks into
one it will take a life away. The movements of
all the characters are very simplistic. The
enemies will just run towards and chase Mario.
There are boxes that you can jump under
which gives Mario an upgrade that will give
you benefits and additions. These can
include being able to shoot fire balls,
increase your size and become more
powerful.
The colour scheme for this Mario game is a mixture of
being bright and muted. The background blues and
greens are quite bright. The colour scheme is also very
simple as it consists mostly of green blue which and
red. The colours are related with nature since the
browns and reds are earthy.
There is a map between levels which
takes you around the world and
introduces you to the next level that
you need to complete.
Research
Sonic – This is a 2D side scroller game with a more detailed pixel art style. The
storyline for this game is that sonic is trying to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from
assimilating all the creatures on the planet. Sonic is a really fast hedgehog and
uses his abilities to save everyone.
The HUD shows your score, time and how
many rings you’ve collected. They are all in
the left corner in a bright yellow which
makes it easy to read. There is no map as it
wouldn’t be necessary for this game.
The colours are very bright which makes
the game more engaging for the player.
We see the action from the side and can
control the character by walking
sideways and jumping. Sonic runs very
fast and can roll as well. Sonic will run
around saving the towns people and
fighting the enemy.
The enemies can attack in different ways.
Some will fly above and attack by shooting
things at your character. Others will be on
the ground and will cause harm if sonic
touches them. These monsters can be
destroyed in a similar way to Mario by
jumping on them. The enemies will be
robotic mosquitos, robotic caterpillars,
robotic crabs, etc. Sonic will also
occasionally have to fight the scientist in
the attempt to defeat him.
Research
Castle crashers – This is a 2D hack-and-slash game. The objective for players
is to chase down an evil wizard and his army after he steals large crystals
and four princesses from the castle.
The HUD shows each players health, XP and
coins. It also shows a picture of each players
character, the players name, weapons and
the players level.
The colour scheme of this game consists of
blues, greens and browns. These colours
have been used because they fit with the
fantasy medieval theme of the game.
The game is 2D with side scrolling view.
The characters have a few different
animations depending on their attack.
The enemy of this game are the wizards
army. They will come in and attack your
characters, lowering your health.
The villains of this game will come in
and attack your character and lower
your health. You can select a weapon
to fight the enemy with which is
displayed at the top. You will be able
to choose from era appropriate
weapons such as swords and bows.
Style Sheet
The characters for my game will
be like these as they are quite
simple designs. It will give the
game quite a retro look.
The green colours will be used for
the trees and grass since it is going
to be a tropical island colour theme.
I could have the sky be an orange
to purple gradient for a tropical
sunset look.
you will collect coins and
other items that will assist

I will have obstacles and
platform to jump over/on to
make gameplay more
challenging. The difficulty will

Game Summary
You are trying to find a way to get out of the desert island. Each level is a different stage in this process. Each
level will increase in difficulty and the monsters that you encounter will become increasingly harder to defeat.
You will have to craft shields, swords, etc in order to complete the levels. You must find everything you need. Or
kill or the monsters, each level in order to progress. There will be tools to assist you with this like axes and maps.
● Will have the choice to play with different characters that each have different advantages to help you
complete the level.
● Can collect materials to craft different weapons or health potions.
● In the final level you will have access to each part of the map in order to find enough materials to create a
strong boat. If the boat doesn’t survive the sea conditions you will have to keep trying.
● You can befriend one of the monsters for companion and use it to fight back against the enemy.

Theme / Setting / Genre

Core Gameplay Mechanics
My game is similar to Mario and other side scrollers because the mechanics will be mostly the same. It will consist
of a moving background and a walk cycle to make the character move. The character will stay in the same place on
the screen.
Story and Gameplay
Story
Once upon a time, in a universe far away…
Explain how the story will be told -- cut-scenes? A ‘talking head’?
The characters have washed up on a desert island. They have no idea why they are there and have no memory of how they got there. They end up
finding a piece of paper with a clue/riddle on it. They believe this is their way to escape the island and so they begin to follow the clues. This leads the
player into the first level.
Core Gameplay
A description of the game ‘loop.’
The game will start with the player washing up on the shore of the island. There will be a short sequence that introduces you to the characters and the
aim of the game. Then level one will begin. It will be a simple level with the goal being to collect a certain amount of gems without getting killed.

Levels
There will be about 6 levels in total which unlock different areas of the island. They will
increase in difficulty and length as you go on. There will be more monsters in higher levels
and they will get harder to fight. There will also be more items to collect in the harder
levels like different tools and weapons. The beginner level will have simple platform to
jump on which will be stationary and the more complex levels will have moving platforms,
more obstacles and more monsters.
The final level will be more complex and will have different stages. This will be the final
stage of the escape. The characters will have to make a boat and take to the sea where they
will face battles with conditions and sea monsters.

Research
My research helped me gain more ideas for my own project
and helped me find which type of video game I wanted to
make. It also helped me to see different variations of side
scroller games as well as different gameplay styles. I think
that one strength of my research was looking into the design
and style of the games. Another strength was the practical
experiments for the magazine and animation. This gave me
practice in photoshop and animation. I learned a lot from the
mistakes I made which prepared me and let me know what
to expect going into production. Another strength of my
research was finding existing products for the magazine
covers and double age spreads. I managed to get a lot of
information and learned a lot. Before going into the task I
didn’t know much about magazines so this helped me a lot.
I think I could have improved my research by looking into
more existing products for video games especially ones that
were more similar to my game. I think this would have
helped me with my game concept by giving me more
knowledge and inspiration.
Planning
Strengths of my planning were the style sheets and game
layout. This helped me make sure I Included different
features without forgetting anything. It also helped make
production go efficiently because I already had a reference to
help me. It also taught me different pixel art character styles
which I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.
To improve my planning for my animation, I could have
planned the core gameplay look better. This could have
helped me with the animation by getting me to think more
about how the game is going to be played before hand. I
would have been able to plan out what I was going to create
better, like needing a game map. I could have also improved
my planning for the magazine by thinking more about the
layouts when creating the mocks. I think this would have
helped me in the production process by giving me more
guidance to follow.
Time Management
I managed my time well when and was able to complete my
project in good time to a point that I felt happy with. I llike
the aesthetics in my animation and feel I spent an even
amount of time on the art and animation. I also finished all
my planning in good time so I could spend time on
production. I do however feel that I didn’t manage my time
as well for the magazine and poster. I spent a lot of time on
the front cover and double age spread. This meant I didn’t
have as much time for the poster which I feel was rushed and
is lacking. I don’t think it is as aesthetically pleasing as the
magazine.
If I had more time to complete my work I would have been
able to make it better and add a few more animations. If I
had more time I would have liked to add a jumping animation
and have the character interact with the background. I
designed platforms but didn’t have time to use them. I would
have also animated a monster in and have had a fight
between them. This was originally supposed to be in my final
piece and I had made designs for them. Also, if I had more
time I would have put more thought into the poster. I think
that I could have made it look better with more time.
Technical Qualities
The walk cycle in my animation was detailed and looked very
effective in the final product. I also had detailed pixel art
backgrounds and title screens etc. I created my music and
sound effects on beepbox and they were quite simple but
sounded like a video game. I could have made my project
more technically detailed by recording audio my own sound
effects and using foley methods. I could have also added
some effects for the transitions so it was more effective and
felt more like a video game. I think that the magazine double
page spread and poster were quite complicated as I did a few
interesting tricks to improve the images. I edited the
magazine photo to make the background blurred so the
subject stood out better in the centre. I also edited the
colours to make it brighter and more vibrant. I did a similar
technique with the poster but implemented it differently. I
used it to create multiple people standing behind.
Aesthetic Qualities
The game backgrounds and title screens are quite
aesthetically pleasing. They had a lot of detail and a
consistent colour scheme for the different locations. The
colours were also very bright and looked nice together. In the
forest backgrounds I have sure to do trees in the
backgrounds that were thinner and had muted colours to
make them look like they are further away. This gives the
image more depth so it doesn’t look simplistic and flat. I am
happy with the way that my double page spread and
magazine look. I think that the colour scheme is aesthetically
pleasing and the circles look nice.
I think that the animation could have been improved by
changing the character. I feel as though the character lacks
detail and doesn’t look as nice as everything else. I feel as
though the character doesn’t really go with the rest of the
style. I think, to improve the poster, I needed to think about
the colours more. The people stood in the back are clearly
taken in different lighting and colours and, whilst I did try to
improve it, I think I needed to have a clearer plan before so I
could have though about it whilst taking the photos.
Aural Qualities
I created all the sounds for my animation using beepbox. This
was useful for creating simple music that is perfect for a
video game. The sound effects for the selections and for
picking up items were created with a piano and xylophone
sound. I thought that the audio for my animation was quite
simple and not very complicated. I could have improved it By
adding some foley techniques. I could have also added a bit
of background ambiance to create wave sounds and forest
sounds to the levels and title screens to make it more
detailed.
Audience Appeal
I appealed to the target audience by making it so that the levels increase in difficulty for the game and get
quite challenging later on. This would appeal to the older teenagers and young adults because they need
something more challenging to keep them interested. There will also be monsters for our characters to kill
which could be more appealing to an older audience.
The magazine would appeal to this target audience because older people who have developed an interest in
film would be more inclined to read the magazine since it is film specific. The magazine cover and double
page spread included things that people who like films would be interested in reading.
Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final
package.
I think that one of he main strengths of my final product was the magazine cover and double page
spread. I think that they both looked effective and I am happy with how they turned out. The photos
looked good and had been edited well and the layouts designs were effective. I think another overall
strength is the design on the animation task. I think that all the assets were aesthetically well done and
look nice. I also think that the characters walk cycle was well made as it worked well in the final product.
I think that one of the overall weaknesses of the product was the audio for the animation as it wasn’t
very technically complicated. I also think that the film poster was one of the weaknesses as I wasn’t
happy with it when it was finished. I think that the image on the poster didn’t look very effective and the
poster was quite boring. I didn’t do as much planning for the poster and I think that it shows in the final
product. This also meant that I encountered more problems that I didn’t think of.

  • 12. Existing Product Red, White and Black colours. Red is the main colour for this cover which tells us the theme for the magazine is Horror. This has been used because red is associated with blood and violence. White has been used for the font colour as it stands out better over the red background. This makes the film title clear and bold. There are lots of dark shadows which make the poster look more sinister and sets a dark tone that creates tension to the audience. The names of celebrities are in a different bolder font which makes them clearer and tells people who they can read about. The clown's face is partially covered which is used to make him seem scarier because it feels more dangerous if the audience can’t see the villain properly. Balloons have been used because they are related to clowns but also because they are reminiscent of the original IT movie. They have advertised how good their film reviews are to attract people to read their magazine. It also says it is “the smarted movie magazine” to try encourage people to buy this product over others. Pennywise’s face is in the center of the image because he is the main villain. He is also looking towards the camera with his head tilted down slightly with a slight smile. This seems more uncomfortable and sinister. They have included a quote that compared this film to another, popular horror film. This will attract an audience who are fans of The Shining and will attract an older audience since The Shining is an 80s horror film. The shining is also seen as being a very successful film so having a comparison makes the film more enticing.
  • 13. Existing Product The title of the film is incorporated into the images around. It isn’t as clear as most magazines would be which shows they have focused a lot of the aesthetics of their cover. They have used this as a selling point for their magazine. The main character of the film is centered on the cover which shows to the audience clearly what the film is about. The poster appeals to people who have watched and are fans of the film. They have relied of the images to do this. People who haven’t seen the film won’t recognise the pictures. They don’t have a lot of text because you are drawn in by the center image. They have also included small graphics in the background that are references to the film. However the nice colour scheme and art graphics may make the film look appealing to a new audience. Colour theme of purple, orange-pink, blue, black and white. The brighter colours go nicely together which makes it aesthetically pleasing. Orange was a key colour in the film, so this cover fits with the movies theme. Soft blues and pinks were also seen throughout the film. The colors of the poster are also muted and toned down which fits with the earthy tones used in the film. They clearly show the title of the magazine by having it in the top center of the page in a a white circle. They then describes the content of the magazine underneath. By having this title in simple black and white colours, it doesn’t distract from the image on the front. It doesn’t include any other information about the other content in the magazine. This means that people might be turned away from buying because they won’t know if they are interested in the content.
  • 14. Existing Product Clear bold text that states the name on the film. Bold Masthead that tell you what the magazine is. Saying that it is the “film of the month” will make readers interested in going to see it because it is popular. A large picture from the film that covers one of the pages is common in double page spreads. This shows that it is advertising spider-man and will be easy to find and pick out when flipping through a magazine, since an entire page with the character on is hard to miss. The picture also shows the action genre since the characters stance and costume show this. They have ratings along the top which show what ratings they give and what the mean. At the bottom of the page, you can see they gave it five stars which is a must see. This will make an audience more intrigued to see the film if they can see that it has been well received.
  • 15. Existing Product This double page spread also has an image that fills one of the pages. This page has a large image of David Bowie who is the artist from the shoulders up. He is looking directly at the camera which engages with the audience. The image is in black and white which was most likely a stylistic choice since it is reminiscent of the 1977 “Heroes” album cover. They will have also been promoting a new brand image for the artist since this follows a black and white theme. The also chose to include an old picture of Bowie from his prime years when he was a big Rockstar. This could have been done to appeal to older readers who remember Bowie's fame and success from the days. It is also showing his old character who people remember and fell in love with. There is a quote in bold at the top of the second page that is being used as a title. This shows they have an interview with the artist and the quote is vague but intriguing which will encourage people to read on. The names of the people included in producing the interview are in bold in the first paragraph. This means that they will stand out to the target audience of music fans. This will engage their interest without them having to read it first. David Bowies name is repeatedly in bold on this page since he is the main focus. Since he was very popular artist, his name would have encouraged a lot of people to buy and read the magazine. Text is laid out in columns which makes the article more simplistic and shows It as being neat. The text is on the right hand side of the page which is different to most since it usually appears on the left. This could have been done so that readers of the article can look at the picture first before reading. It might catch people interest faster if they see the picture.
  • 16. Research Summary In my research I have learned how to create a magazine page or cover that successfully promotes a film or artist. I have also learned some of the common conventions that are used in print like having a consistent colour theme and bold masthead with the title of the magazine. I have also learned how fonts can be used effectively to portray the right message to the audience. I learned that they will always have a picture of one of the main characters from the film in the center of the image. I will make sure to include bold text on my product as his shows makes it clearer to the audience. I will make sure to pick a colour theme to use as this makes them look nicer. I also want to make sure I use a color scheme that relates to the film.

  • 19. Final Choices Final choices I chose this font for the movie logo because it is worn and damaged. This fits with the theme of the film as it is set on a deserted island. The damaged pattern also shows that it is a survival film and the bold lettering fits with the film genre as it is an intense adventure/mystery film. I chose this font for the magazine logo because it is bold and simple, but also more interesting. I waned something simple and bold because it is a film magazine so I wanted the font to be like this. I chose this colour scheme because they relate to the plot of the film. The film is based on an island so the blues and yellow fit with this. I also this that these colours look nice together and the yellow stands out with the blue. Basic Font - Baskerville I hose this font because it is simple and will go with any fonts and design ideas that I have. I also feel that it is a little more interesting that some of the other simple fonts like Calibri or Arial.
  • 20. Final choices I am also thinking of choosing this colour scheme because I think that the colours look nice together and are aesthetically pleasing. I think that the pink accent colour will go really well with the orange and will look good for the magazine. Bad signal I would like to use this for the films logo because the island isn’t real and its actually made from technology in a lab. His gives it a broken look which matches the tone of the film. Cinematic language I would like to use this font for the title of the magazine because it is bold and it looks very cinematic which will work since it is going to be a film magazine. nasalization I think this font will look good for the film logo because it look very sci-fi and I think this will fit for the science parts of the film.

  • 25. Reflection – Magazine Cover Some of the techniques I have used are applying filters to the photograph to make it look better. I made the photo black and white and increased the exposure and clarity. I also added drop shadow to the circle shape to make it look more dynamic and less flat on the page. This makes it appear as though it has been stuck on the cover which I think is effective. I think that so far my poster is looking nice. This use of colour works well together and the placement of the text for the Heading and the information looks good. I also think that the black and white photo looks nice as it makes the pinks and oranges stand out better. I think that to improve my project I should change the font for the title of the film as I don’t think the current one is very effective. I will be looking for a different one next and changing that. I would also like to decide how I’m going to present the film title in the most effective way. Once I have the film title font and placement decided this product will be finished.
  • 26. Reflection – Double page spread For this double page spread I have used content aware fill to separate the subject from the background and I applied a blur effect to the background layer. This created a nice effect that makes the subject of the photo stand out in the center and improves the quality of the photo. I also edited the photo by making the pinks brighter and adjusting the contrast, clarity, highlights and saturation. The parts of this product that I like are the shapes like the orange square in the corner and the circles that I have places behind the text on the right side of the page. I think that they look effective and make the right side interesting without adding too much and distracting from the article. I think that the title on the left needs to be changed. I need to change the font and the colour but first I need to decide what the font for the Film name will be. I also want to change the title at the top of the article and think up a quote to put on the left. I want to to be a quote from one of the cast members interviewed in the article.
  • 27. Reflection - poster For the poster I have also separated the main subject from the background. I did this so I could place other images behind him. I have added mask layers to all the pictures of people to isolate them and for the two on either side I have lowered the opacity as I think it looks more effective than leaving it full. I think I like the use of coloured lighting in the photography because It fits with the colour scheme used for the magazine and looks more interesting. I also like the placement of the people behind however I’m not decided on which photos to use as I have a few others to choose from. I think that changing the copyright colour will help improve it and more effective use of pictures could also improve the look. I still need to add the title of the film and choose a nice font for this.

  • 36. Idea generation Project 9 Adventure Side scroller – the avatar is one of the main characters from the film. You run through the island landscape and have to get to the next levels by facing different monsters from the film. I will include a health bar and unlockable items that will assist the player as the levels get harder. 3rd person adventure – you have to walk around with characters of the film and find clues to uncover the truth about the island. There will be speech bubbles that communicates with the other characters, monsters that you need to fight and plants to avoid. Each level will unlock different parts of the map. Strategy game – you need to fight off the creatures and monsters and collect hearts for health and clue sheets to progress to the next level. Would be an overhead game and you would have three hearts of health.
  • 37. Research Super Mario bros – This is a 2D side scroller game that focuses on completing levels. The later style of the game is very detailed, but the earlier versions were pixel art . The game is set in a fantasy kingdom that has been invaded by the turtles sent by bowser. Bowser turns them into inanimate objects such as bricks and plants. It has simple animations that include jumping and running. You use this to collect mushrooms, break the bricks and attack the bad guys. The HUD is very simple. It shows a coin collection counter, number of hearts and a number at the top which will show how far along in the level you are. The background is very simple especially since this is an early version of the game. It is mostly blue sky with some small hill and cloud details. The art style has been done with pixel art which means that everything has been painted square by square. The design shown here is very simplistic since they are using a smaller number of pixels. This mean that there isn't as much detail in the characters. The game is 2D which works with this side scrolling camera view. We see all the action from the side angle. The camera and person stays in the same place and its just the background that moves. This means it is a side scroller game. Mario also has quite a limited amount of movement. He can only walk either side or jump. Mario will jump on the enemies to kill them but if he walks into one it will take a life away. The movements of all the characters are very simplistic. The enemies will just run towards and chase Mario. There are boxes that you can jump under which gives Mario an upgrade that will give you benefits and additions. These can include being able to shoot fire balls, increase your size and become more powerful. The colour scheme for this Mario game is a mixture of being bright and muted. The background blues and greens are quite bright. The colour scheme is also very simple as it consists mostly of green blue which and red. The colours are related with nature since the browns and reds are earthy. There is a map between levels which takes you around the world and introduces you to the next level that you need to complete.
  • 38. Research Sonic – This is a 2D side scroller game with a more detailed pixel art style. The storyline for this game is that sonic is trying to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from assimilating all the creatures on the planet. Sonic is a really fast hedgehog and uses his abilities to save everyone. The HUD shows your score, time and how many rings you’ve collected. They are all in the left corner in a bright yellow which makes it easy to read. There is no map as it wouldn’t be necessary for this game. The colours are very bright which makes the game more engaging for the player. We see the action from the side and can control the character by walking sideways and jumping. Sonic runs very fast and can roll as well. Sonic will run around saving the towns people and fighting the enemy. The enemies can attack in different ways. Some will fly above and attack by shooting things at your character. Others will be on the ground and will cause harm if sonic touches them. These monsters can be destroyed in a similar way to Mario by jumping on them. The enemies will be robotic mosquitos, robotic caterpillars, robotic crabs, etc. Sonic will also occasionally have to fight the scientist in the attempt to defeat him.
  • 39. Research Castle crashers – This is a 2D hack-and-slash game. The objective for players is to chase down an evil wizard and his army after he steals large crystals and four princesses from the castle. The HUD shows each players health, XP and coins. It also shows a picture of each players character, the players name, weapons and the players level. The colour scheme of this game consists of blues, greens and browns. These colours have been used because they fit with the fantasy medieval theme of the game. The game is 2D with side scrolling view. The characters have a few different animations depending on their attack. The enemy of this game are the wizards army. They will come in and attack your characters, lowering your health. The villains of this game will come in and attack your character and lower your health. You can select a weapon to fight the enemy with which is displayed at the top. You will be able to choose from era appropriate weapons such as swords and bows.
  • 40. Style Sheet The characters for my game will be like these as they are quite simple designs. It will give the game quite a retro look. The green colours will be used for the trees and grass since it is going to be a tropical island colour theme. I could have the sky be an orange to purple gradient for a tropical sunset look. you will collect coins and other items that will assist gameplay I will have obstacles and platform to jump over/on to make gameplay more challenging. The difficulty will increase with the level.
  • 42. Contingency plan What can go wrong? What can you do if it does? Eye strain Take a break form the screen. Computer could break Make sure that all work is saved to one drive before hand so that it auto saves. Getting covid Make sure that work is saved to one drive so I can continue from home

Eye strain Make sure to take regular breaks from screens. Muscle strain Make sure to take breaks and move about to avoid hurting self. Spilling drinks on equipment Keep all food and drinks away from computers fatigue Make sure you don’t work for too long by taking breaks. headaches Take breaks from screens
  • 44. Game Summary You are trying to find a way to get out of the desert island. Each level is a different stage in this process. Each level will increase in difficulty and the monsters that you encounter will become increasingly harder to defeat. You will have to craft shields, swords, etc in order to complete the levels. You must find everything you need. Or kill or the monsters, each level in order to progress. There will be tools to assist you with this like axes and maps. ● Will have the choice to play with different characters that each have different advantages to help you complete the level. ● Can collect materials to craft different weapons or health potions. ● In the final level you will have access to each part of the map in order to find enough materials to create a strong boat. If the boat doesn’t survive the sea conditions you will have to keep trying. ● You can befriend one of the monsters for companion and use it to fight back against the enemy.
  • 45. Game Overview Theme / Setting / Genre Show some example images or similar games / movies / books / TV shows with similar themes. Core Gameplay Mechanics My game is similar to Mario and other side scrollers because the mechanics will be mostly the same. It will consist of a moving background and a walk cycle to make the character move. The character will stay in the same place on the screen.
  • 46. Story and Gameplay Story Once upon a time, in a universe far away… Explain how the story will be told -- cut-scenes? A ‘talking head’? The characters have washed up on a desert island. They have no idea why they are there and have no memory of how they got there. They end up finding a piece of paper with a clue/riddle on it. They believe this is their way to escape the island and so they begin to follow the clues. This leads the player into the first level. Core Gameplay A description of the game ‘loop.’ The game will start with the player washing up on the shore of the island. There will be a short sequence that introduces you to the characters and the aim of the game. Then level one will begin. It will be a simple level with the goal being to collect a certain amount of gems without getting killed. A flowchart is nice: Upgrade Character Core Loop -$ Begin level Will complete the requirements to pass the level Unlock the next level -$ +$ Unlock New Arena -$
  • 47. Levels There will be about 6 levels in total which unlock different areas of the island. They will increase in difficulty and length as you go on. There will be more monsters in higher levels and they will get harder to fight. There will also be more items to collect in the harder levels like different tools and weapons. The beginner level will have simple platform to jump on which will be stationary and the more complex levels will have moving platforms, more obstacles and more monsters. The final level will be more complex and will have different stages. This will be the final stage of the escape. The characters will have to make a boat and take to the sea where they will face battles with conditions and sea monsters.
  • 50. Research My research helped me gain more ideas for my own project and helped me find which type of video game I wanted to make. It also helped me to see different variations of side scroller games as well as different gameplay styles. I think that one strength of my research was looking into the design and style of the games. Another strength was the practical experiments for the magazine and animation. This gave me practice in photoshop and animation. I learned a lot from the mistakes I made which prepared me and let me know what to expect going into production. Another strength of my research was finding existing products for the magazine covers and double age spreads. I managed to get a lot of information and learned a lot. Before going into the task I didn’t know much about magazines so this helped me a lot. I think I could have improved my research by looking into more existing products for video games especially ones that were more similar to my game. I think this would have helped me with my game concept by giving me more knowledge and inspiration.
  • 51. Planning Strengths of my planning were the style sheets and game layout. This helped me make sure I Included different features without forgetting anything. It also helped make production go efficiently because I already had a reference to help me. It also taught me different pixel art character styles which I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. To improve my planning for my animation, I could have planned the core gameplay look better. This could have helped me with the animation by getting me to think more about how the game is going to be played before hand. I would have been able to plan out what I was going to create better, like needing a game map. I could have also improved my planning for the magazine by thinking more about the layouts when creating the mocks. I think this would have helped me in the production process by giving me more guidance to follow.
  • 52. Time Management I managed my time well when and was able to complete my project in good time to a point that I felt happy with. I llike the aesthetics in my animation and feel I spent an even amount of time on the art and animation. I also finished all my planning in good time so I could spend time on production. I do however feel that I didn’t manage my time as well for the magazine and poster. I spent a lot of time on the front cover and double age spread. This meant I didn’t have as much time for the poster which I feel was rushed and is lacking. I don’t think it is as aesthetically pleasing as the magazine. If I had more time to complete my work I would have been able to make it better and add a few more animations. If I had more time I would have liked to add a jumping animation and have the character interact with the background. I designed platforms but didn’t have time to use them. I would have also animated a monster in and have had a fight between them. This was originally supposed to be in my final piece and I had made designs for them. Also, if I had more time I would have put more thought into the poster. I think that I could have made it look better with more time.
  • 53. Technical Qualities The walk cycle in my animation was detailed and looked very effective in the final product. I also had detailed pixel art backgrounds and title screens etc. I created my music and sound effects on beepbox and they were quite simple but sounded like a video game. I could have made my project more technically detailed by recording audio my own sound effects and using foley methods. I could have also added some effects for the transitions so it was more effective and felt more like a video game. I think that the magazine double page spread and poster were quite complicated as I did a few interesting tricks to improve the images. I edited the magazine photo to make the background blurred so the subject stood out better in the centre. I also edited the colours to make it brighter and more vibrant. I did a similar technique with the poster but implemented it differently. I used it to create multiple people standing behind.
  • 54. Aesthetic Qualities The game backgrounds and title screens are quite aesthetically pleasing. They had a lot of detail and a consistent colour scheme for the different locations. The colours were also very bright and looked nice together. In the forest backgrounds I have sure to do trees in the backgrounds that were thinner and had muted colours to make them look like they are further away. This gives the image more depth so it doesn’t look simplistic and flat. I am happy with the way that my double page spread and magazine look. I think that the colour scheme is aesthetically pleasing and the circles look nice. I think that the animation could have been improved by changing the character. I feel as though the character lacks detail and doesn’t look as nice as everything else. I feel as though the character doesn’t really go with the rest of the style. I think, to improve the poster, I needed to think about the colours more. The people stood in the back are clearly taken in different lighting and colours and, whilst I did try to improve it, I think I needed to have a clearer plan before so I could have though about it whilst taking the photos.
  • 55. Aural Qualities I created all the sounds for my animation using beepbox. This was useful for creating simple music that is perfect for a video game. The sound effects for the selections and for picking up items were created with a piano and xylophone sound. I thought that the audio for my animation was quite simple and not very complicated. I could have improved it By adding some foley techniques. I could have also added a bit of background ambiance to create wave sounds and forest sounds to the levels and title screens to make it more detailed.
  • 56. Audience Appeal I appealed to the target audience by making it so that the levels increase in difficulty for the game and get quite challenging later on. This would appeal to the older teenagers and young adults because they need something more challenging to keep them interested. There will also be monsters for our characters to kill which could be more appealing to an older audience. The magazine would appeal to this target audience because older people who have developed an interest in film would be more inclined to read the magazine since it is film specific. The magazine cover and double page spread included things that people who like films would be interested in reading.
  • 57. Overall strengths and weaknesses of the final package. I think that one of he main strengths of my final product was the magazine cover and double page spread. I think that they both looked effective and I am happy with how they turned out. The photos looked good and had been edited well and the layouts designs were effective. I think another overall strength is the design on the animation task. I think that all the assets were aesthetically well done and look nice. I also think that the characters walk cycle was well made as it worked well in the final product. I think that one of the overall weaknesses of the product was the audio for the animation as it wasn’t very technically complicated. I also think that the film poster was one of the weaknesses as I wasn’t happy with it when it was finished. I think that the image on the poster didn’t look very effective and the poster was quite boring. I didn’t do as much planning for the poster and I think that it shows in the final product. This also meant that I encountered more problems that I didn’t think of.
