Legal Consciousness And The United States
In this essay, we will discuss the term of legal consciousness, and the importance of why the concept
was developed and most importantly the weaknesses and strengths of legal consciousness in the
United States. We will then look together to first define what is legal consciousness? Legal
consciousness is what people think and say about the law. It is often referred to as social
consciousness. More simply put, legal consciousness is the attitude people with regards to the law and
this may vary amongst people from different class, gender, educational backgrounds, race, ethnicity
and political views. It is the legal awareness of the public about the law and how the law works and
what is legal vs. illegal. An individual s legal consciousness gives meaning to one s perspective of
how they think about the law. Legal consciousness changed with time and space according to legal
scholars. Legal consciousness helps us differentiate the gap between the law on he book and the law in
action (Susan S. Silbey, page 1). Ewick Silbey describe consciousness as engaging in the social
movement and predominance. (Susan S. Silbey, page 333). Ewick and Silbey describe as before, with,
and against the law, are described asa the cultural tool kit from which popular understandings of
legality are constructed (Susan S. Silbey, page 349). Ewick and Silbey say that belonging into one of
the three categories but rather shifting between the three categories over time, space and under certain

Designing A Project Using Java Programming
worked on and grasped knowledge on different java platforms while I work at Damian Consulting Inc.
Java programming, one of the best programming platforms for getting the right output with a little
ease. The understanding of how to develop a project using java programming is made clear. In the first
few weeks of my job I had to learn and brush up all about the basic features of java programming so
that when I had to apply on the coding I had no chance to confuse. The basic features of java are
dependent on the OOPs concept. The features of java that made it unique, platform independent and
highly desirable are:
Simple
Portable
Object oriented
Multithreaded
Architectural neutral
High performance
Distributed
Dynamic
Secure
Robust
The basic concepts that are to be learned are:
Objects:
The objects give us the basic understanding of the java programming. These are the elemental
particles for developing a state or a behavior for a particular value. The objects are the collections that
are the blueprint particles for the class. The super class in java is Object Class.
Class:
The class is the collection of objects. The class gives us the blueprint for the object behaviors and the
states, the class determines the complete functionality of the object / value features.
The class is the combination of methods and their functionalities. They contain the variable
information in the form of objects. Every class has the super class. The super class is called the Object
Class.

Tulips In The Botany Of Desire By Michael Pollan
The Tulip has grown to be a symbol for beauty, grabbing the vain eye of humans all around the world
since the 1600 s. Associated with the bulbous plant is an everlasting craze, driving people into a frenzy
and showing the volatility of financial markets. The symbiotic relationship between humans and
plants has always been thought to benefit humans, but what if in fact the desire behind plants, in this
case the tulip, is their driving force for survival? In the book The Botany of Desire, the author Michael
Pollan hypothesizes that tulips have developed an evolutionary design to enhance beauty, making
them constantly desirable and reproducible. Although tulips serve no practical purpose, they are still
yearned for by humans and billions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are instinctively drawn to gorgeous flowers, much like the way bees are. One theory could have to
do with flowers being the precursor to fruits, which serve as a food source for humans. Since the
creation of mankind, humans have been built to be foragers, evolving to spy flowers in an abundant
landscape of colors. The humans that were successful foragers were the first to find sweet fruit to
sustain them and the ones to survive. This could have resulted in natural selection favoring good
foragers that could find fruits, remember their location, and differentiate them. This proposes the
thought that maybe all humans recognize floral beauty in the same way because we are products of
our ancestors, who evolved to be meticulous

Sandra Cisneros Biography
Sandra Cisneros is a Latina novelist who was born on December 20, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois. She is
one of seven children and she is the only female child. Cisneros father left Mexico and came to
America to make a new life. Her mother was Chicana and worked in factories, while her father
upholstered furniture to make ends meet (Charters P.183). Her Parents did not make a lot of money
and with seven mouths to feed money was very tight, she grew up very poor. The Cisneros family also
moved around often, going from the ghetto of Chicago to Mexico City to visit her father s family.

Essay Comparing Two Open Universities
Comparing two Open Universities within the Common Wealth:
Athabasca University and the Allama Iqbal Open University at Islamabad
When the Open University of the United Kingdom (OU UK) opened its doors in 1969 it was
considered a revolution in higher education by many pedagogues. In the forty years that followed 80
similar higher open education institutes were established (Peters, O. 2010, p57 81). The common
denominator of this new generation of distance universities is that they are open. During the OU UK
inauguration Lord Crowther stated: We are open as to people ; as to places ; as to methods ; and finally
to ideas (cf. Tunstall 1974, in Peters, O. 2010, p 62). What this openness entails, depends largely on
the social, economic, and political circumstances in the country in which an open university is
founded. Two former British colonies and members of the Common Wealth, Canada and Pakistan,

It was modeled after the Santa Cruz campus of the University of California. It aimed to have a small
student population and focused on liberal arts (Byrne 1989). When it was founded, there were 3 more
public universities in Alberta. There seemed to be room for a fourth university as the discovery of oil
fields had resulted in a significant growth of both economy and population. Against expectations
enrollment remained low and the government of Alberta decided to reform the UA into an online
university as a pilot project (Byrne 1989). The pilot was started in 1972 and would run up to five
years. It would be considered successful if enrolments would substantially increase or if it would
attract students that otherwise would not have enrolled themselves in a university (Byrne, 1989). It
was so successful that UA outgrew its first campus and was moved from Edmonton to Alberta in 1984

Immigration, Deportation, And Family Separation By Vanessa...
Are human beings considered illegal? If so, what makes a person illegal? Is it because of their race,
gender, social status, sexual orientation, beliefs, etc. Or is it because they come to a place with hope of
a better future despite that they aren t allowed too. By this, I m talking about the issue of illegal
immigration. Illegal immigration is the problem concerning people who illegally immigrate into the
U.S. Specifically, people from areas like Central America, including Honduras, El Salvador, and
Guatemala. They usually leave behind their families in order to complete this journey and that can
have dire consequences. It is my strongest opinion that there needs to be more awareness raised on the
issue of separations occurring between families ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By solving the problem, Im not talking about by shutting down the border, building a wall, or having
dire consequences for those who have illegally immigrated and striking fear in others. I m proposing
and believe that the way we solve the problem is by improving the economies and changing the
conditions for those who live in countries like Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, etc. The book Enrique
s Journey, by Sonia Nazario, states that, In the United States, many immigration experts have
concluded that the only effective strategy for change is to improve the economies of immigrant
sending countries, so people will not want or need to leave. On pages 241 and

Separating Music Into Different Categories Or Styles In Music
Categories or styles in music are identified as genres. Separating music into different genres can be
achieved by identifying shared traditions or conventions in musical pieces. Simon Frith argues that
genre categorization is a tool for record companies in order to gain maximum profit from their
recording artists The underlying record company problem, in other words, how to turn music into a
commodity, is solved in generic terms (1996, p. 76). Articles by Reebee Garofalo, Simon Frith, Hector
Qirko and Arnold Shaw explore how musical genres are constructed, defined, negotiated, and
maintained.
The construction of genre constantly varies and is often inconsistent. This can be attributed to the
demands of consumerism. Music labels constantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of this is Rhythm Blues , originally referred to as race music, the term rhythm blues
trended in 1949 as a means to describe music recorded by black artists. Relating back to the
overlapping of musical styles in genre, rhythm blues serves as a direct and immediate source for styles
of rock n roll that rose to popularity in the mid twentieth century, however its historical impact, as
well as its artists and character have had limited acknowledgement (Shaw, 1980, p.71). Garofalo
(1987) even claimed until the Second World War Black and country and western writers were
routinely excluded from the society (p.78). An example of this suppressed attention are the early
recordings of Rock n Roll artist Elvis Presley, Shaw notes that, before gaining fame, Presley s five
Sun disks had included songs originally written and recorded by a black Rhythm Blues artist (1980.
P.71). Shaw argues that while rock n roll is a white derivative of R B the two can easily be
distinguished, presenting a number of distinctions, R B comprises the 1940s and early 50s era, while
rock n roll surfaces in the mid 1950s (1980, p.74). Other distinctions include sociological aspects,
such as R B being the product of the black experience in a segregated world...forcing them to find
entertainment in...black locations (Shaw, 1980, p.74). In this aspect, R B has been maintained as a
musical aspect throughout its history, best explained by this quote from Honkers and Shouters (1978)
R B stemmed from a rich, indigenous folk tradition whereas pop music was a mishmash of European
influences (Shaw, 1980, p.78). R B received recognition in its role for the emergence of rock n roll in
the 1970s, providing an example of how those two genres have been negotiated by scholars to offer
roots and origins of genres in popular

African Americans And The Caged Bird
A symbol that Angelou uses is a caged bird and a free bird to represent races. Even though it is not
said in the poem it is quite obvious to the reader that the free bird represents White Americans and the
caged bird represents African Americans. Throughout the poem Angelou carries out the extended
metaphor to express her view on society. The way the free bird claims to own the sky associates with
the ideas of power and choice, this indicates an air of arrogance and selfishness as the White
Americans assume that it is their place to own and dominate the world, despite others desires and
needs. The metaphor sky relates to the society, power, riches, and privileges in the world. This
contrasts with White Americans owning the world as

Technology is a thief because it steals our minds. Things like smartphones can be burdens at times.
Sometimes, I go to restaurants or other places and I see two people together. Instead of socializing,

oblivious to the mother nature in both of their literature. The Veldt by Ray Bradbury s and a short

The Effects Of Homeschooling On Children And Public Schools
Introduction: Homeschooling is becoming much more common now than it was years ago. Parents are
now preferring to homeschool their children over public school due to many reasons such as religion,
safety, academic quality travel, family togetherness, separation of government and school, mastery
over grades, expenses, and focusing on learning plans made for the student. Public schools are
institutions, which are funded by tax revenues from the government. Schools have boundaries to then
figure out which students will attend a certain school to avoid overcrowding. The schools curriculum
is drawn up by the state and they follow a standardized testing result and other measurements, which
gives the state information of how the school is performing. According to Isabel Shaw, there are an
abundance of pros and cons of deicing to homeschool your children. Some key points from this article
were:
Homeschooling Pros The advantages of homeschooling your children are that as a parent you get to
decide what your child learns and at what age depending on their ability and level of interested and as
a student you get to choose how long you want to learn about a topic and when you want to. During
difficult times in the family or new transitions such as having a baby, moving, or a death in the family,
homeschooling stabilizes the family because you don t have to worry about missing school since you
can figure out a time that works best for the family to continue learning during

The Feathers Of The Wind
Feathers in the Wind I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for the final time. I attempted to gather
my thoughts, but it was no use. There were no thoughts that could justify the action I needed to do. I
composed myself and cocked back the lever to load my BB gun. The steel and carbonate composite
that made up the gun never felt colder, even on a hot summer s day like today. The world seemed to
stop spinning and there was nothing but silence. It was only myself and the task at hand. I removed
my finger from the trigger guard and placed it behind the trigger itself. I closed my eyes again. I was
ready to finish this. It was only an hour beforehand when I found it a little black and grey fuzzball,
like something you would find when you go up to clean out your attic. I found it resting on the
pavement of my driveway. It sat there baking in the hot August afternoon sun. It was just bobbing its
little head around, but unable to move. I walked up to further investigate and to my unfortunate
discovery, it was a small bird. It must have fallen out of the oak tree and took quite the flight down.
Upon further inspection, I found that the bird had appalling injuries to its neck, head, and wing. The
top of the head had a horrible gash which gave the bird the appearance of having a shaved head. It
stuck out like a sore thumb. The wings were both mangled and broken. I quickly realized that this
poor creature was not going to survive. I tried gathering a shoe box and feeding it and

Cultural Differences In Two Kinds And Catch The Moon

are what matters. The two short stories, Two Kinds and Catch the Moon are polar opposites and
exactly the same simultaneously. Their cultures are extremely different but those differences are what

overcoming it, applicable the same way
The short story Catch the Moon has a theme that is impacted by its surroundings and cultural setting.

The cultural difference in the story is probably the largest contrast of the stories. In Two Kinds the
mother out of tradition is strict with her daughter making her do things that she thinks are the best for
her, while on the other hand in Catch the Moon the father lets his son do as he pleases but still wishes
the best for him. Culture wise the stories are opposite however on the side of theme they share many
similarities. Louis from Catch the Moon was trying to persevere on and move forward with life after
his mother died, on the other hand the daughter from Two Kinds was also trying to move on and do
different things and succeed, they aren t identical however they share similar qualities such as being
able to persevere through hard times. Each of their cultures also impacted the theme in the same way,
while one story was laid back and the other way strict and harsh they still in the end came of with
similar points to be put across. Each story compared shows that people from different worlds can have

Matthew 1 And Luke 3 Controversy
There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding the differences in the accounts of the birth and up
through the early years of Jesus life in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. Of course, one of the greatest
points of controversy is the difference in the genealogies in Matthew 1 and Luke 3. It is vitally
important to remember that the two accounts are written to two different people groups and focuses on
two different faces or distinctions of the life of Jesus. Matthew is written to the Jews with a focus on
Jesus as King of the Jews, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Luke is written to the Gentiles with a focus
on Jesus as the Son of Man, or the Prophet emphasizing his humanity. Matthew traces the lineage
through the line of kings back to David ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, Luke tells us of an angel appearing and bringing this wonderful news to shepherds in the
fields keeping their sheep. These shepherds then come and find the babe as foretold, wrapped in
swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. It is evident from this account that Jesus is likely less than 24
hours old at this time. The shepherds then spread the wonderful news. Jesus was circumcised the 8th
day there in Bethlehem. After Mary s purification, they went to Jerusalem to present Jesus to the Lord
and offer the sacrifices required for the male that opens the womb, according to Jewish law. Then we
have no further details about Jesus childhood from Luke until at age twelve Jesus and his family go to
Jerusalem for the annual feast of the Passover. In reference to the confusion between the two accounts,
the first thing we must notice is the timeline difference. Luke was days leading up to and days after
Christ s birth up to around 40 days after. In Matthew, however, we find in chapter 2 it begins the
account of the wise men from the east coming to Jerusalem. Instead of an angel appearing to them,
they reveal they saw a star appear in the east. This star appeared at Christ s birth prompting the wise
men to travel to Jerusalem in search of this

Death In The Woods
A Critical Analysis of Death in the Woods Death in the Woods is a story about a woman that lives a
hard life. When she was a girl she worked for a German farmer and his wife. When she was a little
older she married a man named Jake Grimes thinking she would get away from the crude work of the
farmer. She soon finds out that life doesn t get any better for her than it already was.
Later in the story she is found dead by a rabbit hunter in the woods (Cleveland).
Death in the Woods seemingly concerns a farm woman, Mrs.Grimes, who, only in her early forties,
seems old and probably psycotic. She doesn t have a first name in the story, and, indeed, very little is

A person could then appropriate a single one of these truths and try to go by it. That is when he or she
would become a grotesque. The stories in Winesburg, Ohio do grapple with Anderson s intended
theme, and a story such as Hands clearly illustrates what he means by grotesque (Ellis 2).
The hands belong to Wing Biddlebaum, formerly Adolph Myers, a teacher in a Pennsylvania village
who was beaten and run out of town for caressing boys. Anderson Cleveland 4 is oblique about Wing s
homosexuality, for the thrust of the story. In the story Death in the Woods, as a girl, Mrs. Grimes was
sexually abused her German owner (Doneskey 1 3).
The Philosopher provides a more subtle illustration of grotesque and introduces the idea that a
grotesque need not be pitiable or tragic; in fact, he can be wildly humorous as demonstrated at the
beginning of the story with the philosopher s description (Doneskey 1 3).
Anderson was interested in the development of the artist type, the inner desires of repressed people,
the failure of people to communicate their true selves; the way conventions and tradition have twisted
and distorted the individual (Doneskey 1 3).
Anderson wrote several versions of the tale before he felt that he had to come close to telling it
adequately, and one of the most narrative devices

Persuasive Essay On Colon Cancer
Colonoscopy: Your Colon Cancer Fighter At one time or another, you will most likely get a
colonoscopy. It s not going to be necessarily enjoyable, but it is preventing you from getting colon
cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Furthermore, this year it s expected to claim the
lives of nearly 50,000 people in the United States. All for something that is largely preventable if you
take the right action!
Colonoscopies are the most common way to detect colon cancer. Therefor doctors recommend regular
screening tests every 10 years, but people with higher risk, such as a family history with the disease or
old age may need to go in more frequently. Normally people should begin screenings at age 50 but
people with an increased risk or signs of symptoms, should talk to their doctor about the best plan.
Consequently, most people don t think they need to go in because they don t show any symptoms, it s
money for something they probably don t even have, or they think since no one else in their family has
had it, their safe, but they re actually excuses for something that could help save you from the grueling

Introduction
Dee Brown s Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was first published in the United States in 1970. This
landmark book which incorporated a number of eyewitness accounts and official records offered a
scathing indictment of the U.S. politicians, soldiers, and citizens who colonized the American West.

Army kills or displaces all Mescalero Apaches and Navahos in the region. Many Navahos die when
they are forced to live at the Bosque Redondo reservation. Ultimately, the Navahos sign a peace treaty
and are allowed to return to what is left of their land.
Chapter 3: Little Crow s War
Manipulated by deceptive treaties, the Santee Sioux surrender most of their land for money and
provisions they mostly do not receive. Little Crow does not want to fight the military might of the
United States but has no choice when some of his men kill white settlers. The Santees are ultimately
overpowered by the Army and by a Santee traitor.
Chapter 4: War Comes to the Cheyennes
White settlers ignore a treaty and begin settling on Native−American territory. After Cheyennes and
Arapahos meet with the Colorado governor to try to maintain peace, many Cheyennes are mutilated or
massacred in their Sand Creek village. The Cheyennes split, some going north to join the Northern
Cheyennes and the Teton Sioux in Powder River country, while others go south, below the Arkansas
River, where they are coerced into signing away their land in Colorado.
Chapter 5: Powder River Invasion
The Cheyennes learn that soldiers are building a fort in the Powder River country. A Cheyenne warrior
tries to warn some Arapahos of coming soldiers, but they do not believe him, and their village is
destroyed by one military column. A group of Sioux chase the half−starved,

Determining The Transfer Of Foreign Genes Into The Cells...
Genetic engineering involves the transfer of foreign genes into the cells of animals or plants at an
early stage in their development so that they develop with desired characteristics.
Selective breeding is the process in which humans manipulate the gene pool by breeding certain
organisms with desired phenotypic qualities and characteristics (such as high milk yield and disease
resistant). The trait can be reliably passed on to the next generation and produce offsprings that meet
specific requirements. This increases the rate at which stock improvements are made. By crossing two
organisms with dominant alleles for a particular trait, it will be noticeable that some of their offspring
will express the desirable characteristics. This can be shown using a monohybrid cross like such:
Dominance and Recessive F1 Generation
T=Tall, t=short
TtxTt
T t T
TT
Tt t Tt tt Phenotypic ratio: 3:1 (Tall=75% Short=25%)
Genotypic ratio: 1:2:1 (TT=25% Tt=50% tt=25%)
As shown in the monohybrid cross we can see that the offsprings resulted in 75% tall and 25% short
which is a desirable characteristic that the dominant allele expresses.
F2 Generation
TTxTt
T t T
TT
Tt
T
TT
Tt
Phenotypic ratio: 4:4 (Tall=100%)
Genotypic ratio: 2:2 (TT=50% Tt=50%)
Shown above we can see that by crossing the F1 generation, we now get a full 100% phenotype ration
expressed of the desirable trait. 50% TT and 50% Tt for the genotype that have been expressed. This
has demonstrated how scientists selectively

The Interrupters Documentary Analysis
Click Slide 1) Have you ever thought of street violence as an infectious disease? One that can be
treated by identifying the source of outbreak and intervening before the infection spreads?
Through time, educational information has been passed on using films otherwise known as
documentaries, which are illustrated through pictures, interviews and recordings of real life events to
provide a factual record or report.
The key to a great documentary is good communication. A high level of communication between the
documentary and its audience is imperative in delivering an educational message through a concise,
yet entertaining presentation.
Good morning fellow documentary filmmakers, my name is Bianca Zell, today I have the pleasure of
introducing you, to one of the most successful documentaries to ever come out of America. The
Interrupters is shot over the course of a year in the streets of Chicago, it tells the moving stories of
three Violence Interrupters who try to protect their communities from the violence they once

They Things They Carried. Explication
Life in a Warzone
Reading the short story The Things they carried, by Tim O Brien, creates a mesmerizing image of a
war zone. It describes the tough war times for American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The
story is a literary portrayal of the material and mental pressures on the soldiers, who strive to survive
physically and mentally in the war. The things they carried talks about how heavily equipped are
American Soldiers, and how a group of them carried numerous tools and weapons as war materials. It
presents the environment of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and fellow soldiers. They used to be loaded with
survival goods and weapons all the time during Vietnam War. They carried all possible equipments

Differences Between Malcolm X And Martin Luther King
Government Approved Freedom
Despite both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. actively fighting for freedom and equality during
the Civil Rights Movement, both men are not remembered equally. Undeniably, their approaches were
different which resulted in conflicting ideals and different outcomes. These differences are highlighted
through the comparison of Dr. King s Letter from Birmingham Jail to Malcolm X s speech of The
Ballot or the Bullet . Both Malcolm X and Dr.King advocated for change regarding the treatment of
the black community, but their perceptions of the timeline for change varied. Malcolm X was prepared
to abandon the current system and separate the black community entirely to achieve immediate
equality even if this called for violence. Whereas Dr. King advocated for all groups to think and act
differently for total equality and true freedom. Ultimately, Dr. King understood that for complete
change it might be a longer process, but he was willing to be respectful and encourage this movement
peacefully.
Considering the men sought different types of change to achieve their freedom, they had to target
different audiences to advocate their plans towards. As Martin Luther King Jr. desired change
throughout society and the systematic injustices, he had to target those who did not personally
experience his inequality, but would still listen and respect him. As a minister and admired man of
God, other church leaders were an ideal audience for Dr. King. He

Christ, spiritual leader of Christianity and Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights activist, who were
subject to hatred, rejection, ridicule, and risk their reputation and even their own lives. Harper Lee s
book To Kill a Mockingbird, demonstrates that being an individual is more important than being a
member of a community. Lee s presents this through Atticus Finch s role as an agent of change, who
fights the injustice against the black community in the deep south in the late 1930 s, and the character
of Scout, Atticus s daughter, who longs for freedom

Critical Analysis Of Forrest Gump
Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between
the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he
survives them all with only honesty and kindness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming
story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump.
The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks
cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand why
some people are criticized for being too clever by half. Forrest is clever by just exactly enough. Tom
Hanks may be the only actor who could have played the role. I can t think of anyone else as Gump,
after seeing how Hanks makes him into a person so dignified, So straight ahead. The performance is a
breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths.
Forrest is born to an Alabama boardinghouse Owner (Sally Field) who tries to correct his posture by
making him wear braces, but who never criticizes his mind. When Forrest is called stupid, his mother
tells him, Stupid is as stupid does, and Forrest turns out to be incapable of doing anything less than
profound. Also, when the braces finally fall from his legs, it turns out he can run like the wind. That s

Unbroken Short Story
WWII will remain as one of the most tragic wars of all time. With an astounding death toll of over 60
million people 3% of the world s population in 1940. In the books Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand,
and Night by Elie Wiesel the horrors of WWII are told in detail about the main characters near death
experiences. Hope is a defining factor throughout the journeys of main characters Louie and Eliezer.
The theme of hope in the face of adversity is a theme common to both stories. No matter how dire the
situation may seem, there is always hope to be found.
In Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, there is much to say about the ordeal and odyssey about Louie the
main character. Louie was an Olympic runner who was brutalized as a prisoner of war in Japan and
was stranded on a raft for 47 days. There is no way he should have survived the horrific times he had
endured, but he did. There were plenty of trials and tribulations that could have made Louie give up,
but the worst was being stranded on a raft only to be found by the Japanese and thrown into a POW
camp. During these times Louie was sick, starving, and being tortured by a sadistic guard they called
the Bird. With small acts of defiance, he was able to preserve his dignity and persevere to make it
through, even though every time he passed one obstacle, he felt there were thousands more. Laura
Hillenbrand then states The same attributes that had made [Louie] the boy terror of Torrance were
keeping him alive in the greatest struggle

Descriptive Essay On The Day Of A Dog
The turbulent winds smashed into my face as I struggled to pull my dog to the cover of the large oak
tree. All of a sudden, a large gust of wind lifted my dog into the air, snapping her old and tattered
leash! I screamed in horror as she was flung into the choppy river. Stunned, I could only watch in
panic as my dog s head bobbed up and down in the water, while she frenetically tried to keep herself
afloat...
Unaware of the dreadful events that were about to unfold later in the day, I rolled over in my cozy bed,
but was abruptly shaken out of my tranquil sleep by the sound of my dogs shrill, loud bark and the
slivers of light which pierced through my eyelids. Drowsily, I opened my eyes to see my little dog
anxiously circling around my rumpled bed. I looked out of the ever so slightly tinted window at the
rising sun and wondered to myself why I wake up early to walk my dog. I got out of bed and quickly
put on my clothes as I know that the deafening bark will prolong due to her urgency to ease herself. I
walked over to the window hoping for a sudden change in the weather so I could go back to sleep, as
my dog hates to go out on rainy days, but to my dismay it was still a sunny ... Show more content on

The chosen passage defines the importance of Paradise Lost by John Milton as a form of literary
symbolism to define the Monster s self education as a basis for his revenge against Victor. The
relationship between God and Adam defines how the Monster comes tor realize that he has been

that God has abandoned him. The Monster knows that he has not been given the love and resources
given to Adam, which forces him to realize that he is more like the fallen angel Lucifer. In response to
this realization, the Monster decides to kill Victor s wife, just as Lucifer destroyed eve by tempting her

symbolism that the Monster learns that create a motivation for vengeance against his creator. This

The human body is one of the most complex and fascinating things on this planet. There are five
major groups of compounds that compose the human body. These are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins,
nucleotides, and water. These compounds are all very important to humans and without them humans
would not be able to survive. Compounds have many functions that encourage a human cell and a
human body to function.
Compounds are pure substances made up of atoms of two or more elements chemically combined
together in fixed ratios determined by mass. When a compound is formed from its components, a
chemical change takes place through chemical reactions. Elements form compounds to ... Show more

The lipid molecules are most well known as forming basic structures of cell membranes and as energy
storage molecules as well. There are various types of lipids, three main types include: true fats
(triglycerides), phospholipids, and steroids.
Lipids are also described as fatty acids. Fatty acids are merely carboxylic acids with long hydrocarbon
chains. The fatty acid structure is one of the most fundamental categories of biological lipids, and is
commonly used as a building block of more structurally complex lipids. Fats that include these
molecules are unsaturated fats. Other fatty acids have no double bonds. Fats that include these fatty
acids are saturated fats. In most human health situations, the consumption of unsaturated fats is
preferred to the consumption of saturated fats. Like carbohydrates, lipids can also be categorized into
simple and complex.
Simple lipids are defined as those that are on hydrolysis yield at most two types of primary product
per mole; complex lipids yield three or more primary hydrolysis products per mole. Hydrolysis is a
chemical process in which a certain molecule is split into two parts by the addition of a molecule of
water . Alternatively, the terms neutral and polar lipids respectively are used to define these groups,
but are less exact. The complex lipids for many purposes are best considered in terms of either the
glycerophospholipids which contains a

The Pros And Cons Of The Popcorn Failure
Reliability is defined as the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under
stated conditions for a specified period of time. The operation of any electronic device generates heat
and with the increasing device density of the IC chips the amount of heat flux generated by the
integrated circuit chips has gone to a level of 100 200 W/(cm^2 ) [2]. Each time a device is powered
up, the individual components heat up and cool down. This heating and cooling leads to thermal
cycling of the electronic components which causes many problems, such as shear deformation, due to
the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of each material. Figure 2.1 shows the
varying CTEs for a typical PBGA package in this research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this study, structural and thermal reliability of ball grid array packages, mainly the shear stresses
and strains of critical solder balls, have been investigated using accelerated life testing. Many studies
and failure analyses have been showing that interconnect failures due to mismatches of CTE during
thermal cycling is the most critical mode of failure in leaded and SMT packages such as BGAs [5].
Figure 2.3 shows a schematic of what happens to the solder joints during thermal cycling due to
mismatches in CTEs. It shows that at a stress free temperature, the two components, silicon and the
PCB, are relaxed. Then, as the temperature increases, the PCB wants to expand at a higher rate since
the PCB s CTE is 14.5 ppm/°C and the CTE of the silicon is 2.54 ppm/°C. As the temperature drops,
the PCB wants to contract much quicker than the silicon. Looking at the schematic, one can see that
the solder joints are having to flex and deform due to the mismatch in CTE between the two materials.
Over time, these shear stresses and strains cause the solder joints to become fatigued, then cracks
begin to propagate, and the package will ultimately fail once a certain number of thermal cycles have
been

My Life In College
Life is a winding road that goes through mountains and over water, but also through mud, ice, and
snow. What I mean by that is that life is something very short, filled with beautiful moments as well as
dark and disturbing ones (well, if we are being technical, life is the longest thing any of us will
experience). One moment that nobody can seem to decide which category it belongs in, is college.
College for some people can be this once in a lifetime experience that creates friendship, memories,
and everlasting knowledge. While for others it is absolute misery and stress. Regardless of all of that,
college is an incredibly tough decision that comes down to intelligence, money, and future careers. All
of which are choices of which many people fear to make in life. Bowling Green and Findlay
University both seem to be very sound and reasonable choices; however, Bowling Green looks to be
the better choice due to costs and their business programs. As for Bowling Green, which is my first
choice, was actually the second college I had visited. It had a massive campus, well, at least compared
to what I expected. It had hundreds of dorms and plenty of faculty to go around for the students.
Needless to say that during that first visit, I was blown away and beyond impressed with everything I
saw. So after looking more into it, there are definitely a lot of different reasons that I was even more
inclined to go there. The first thing I looked at was the tuition, which was a surprising

Dracula s True Intentions In Dracula By Bram Stoker

Who was Dracula?
Dracula was a Romanian aristocrat that lived in a mansion in Transylvania. WIP
What were Dracula´s true intentions?
The book starts by portraying Dracula with this evil being that want´s to conquer and dominate the
world as we know it. Although when dissected, the book reveals that Dracula had multiple different
intentions that could easily be interpreted in a false manner.
Dracula was truly fascinated of London, the most industrialized society where people where leaving
gods faith for logic, science and technology. In London, the populous would never believe in
superstitions an ancient script because they would consider that to be unproven myths and children s
stories. He considered London to not be a God fearing society like the societies in his home country,
Romania, and used that to his advantage to manipulate people that were not superstitious enough to

intelligent life other than Dracula that lived together with him were his brides. His brides that he didn

them and never had an intelligent companionship with them. Letting them be slaughtered by the
humans and not even mourning their deaths shows that Dracula didn´t even care about his brides.
Perhaps Dracula didn´t even have the possibility to hold an intelligent conversation for ages. That
explains why he warmed up speaking to Harker so quickly. He wanted to return to a world where he
didn´t feel as lonely and bored, a world where he would be able to gain new friends, companions and

The Conservative Project Upholds The Best System Of...
It is essential for people to receive the wealth and resources they have earned for the amount of work
they have contributed. That is a fact of society that is undisputable from almost every perspective.
This concept, however, is not exclusive to just the majority of society. In several ways, one can argue
that it is not just for the majority to have control over private property rights. That is why I believe that
the conservative project upholds the best system of distributing wealth and ownership. Both liberal
and conservative perspectives believe in the idea that management of capital, as well as the economic
system, should be handled by a group of leaders in the public and private world. This is a shared belief

According to lecture 10, Capital and Liberal Ideology, it is stated that The United States was the first
country created on the basis of liberal ideology, the first country whose very justification for being
created and existing came from liberal ideology. The founding document of the United States, the US
Declaration of Independence (1776) by American revolutionary leader Thomas Jefferson, is based
upon the most important founding document of liberalism. The liberal agenda focuses more on
actively helping the majority of the population through programs that aid the poor, sick, and elderly.
These have historically been paid for by taxing the working population, with wealthier citizens paying
a greater share. As seen in Lecture 55, Using Racism to Hide the Transfer of the White Majority s
Labor to Capital, there was a social program set up in 1866, which was the Freedmen s Bureau. The
premise of this social program was to help transition ex slaves from slavery to wage labor. This
movement allowed capital to form in the hands of these ex slaves. And as said, It also performed some
welfare state functions, such as education and rudimentary medicine, and was later used by the
Republicans to try to secure some rights for blacks. Liberals also focus on the regulation of major
corporations through minimum wage laws and worker safety regulations. The key defining aspect of
contemporary conservatism is the opposition to major social programs

cry from the glossy $100 poster he possessed at the outset of his college journey. Now he hangs four,
pristine degrees on the walls of room 115 Van Peursem Hall. However, in the space next to his
degrees, there is a noticeable absence of anything Dutch! Odd. A resident of Orange City with no
wooden shoes, delft, or even a image of tulips. Dr. Vonder Bruegge, (for Dutch spellers: V o nder, not
V a nder) has yet to embrace Orange City s almond pastry, pointy hat, idolatry of Dutch heritage. He is
a firm believer that six parades...is five too many . When Dr. Vonder Bruegge accepted his position at
Northwestern College, he was not prepared for the onslaught of Orange City s Dutch culture. Even
though he grew up in a small community, Orange City was a completely new experience for him.
Although Dr. Vonder Bruegge has yet to fully assimilate into Orange City s unique culture, he has
discovered that he enjoys pheasant hunting in his spare time. For those who would argue that pheasant
is to dry for consumption, Dr. Vonder Bruegge would prescribe his favorite pheasant cooking method:
a George Foreman grill. According to the good Doctor this seals in the juices from both

The Liberties Of The United States
Within the Constitution of the United States of America, the word privacy appears exactly zero times.
Not once does the legal document that outlines the social order of the United Sates, define, or
explicitly state a right to privacy for its citizens. Even with this fact prevailing over society, American
citizens still esteem privacy in the highest regard. According to a survey conducted by the PEW
Research Center, a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends
shaping America, 93 percent of adults say that being in control of who can get information about them
is important... 88 percent [of Americans] say it is important that they not have someone watch or listen
to them without their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I hypothesize that modern day Americans greatly value privacy because throughout American history
and culture, citizens have been encouraged to own personal possessions such as property, people, and
tangible materials while also maintaining a sense of power in relation to others within society. For
example in the late 1800s, American corporations as well as economically invested individuals bought
and took ownership of tribal land in Hawaii . Land was taken by Americans and claimed as private
property in a culture in which the concepts of privacy and property possession were foreign. After
some time, Americans possessed ownership of a majority of Hawaiian land and this allowed them the
power to manipulate the land in whatever manner they deemed suitable. Privacy, the state or condition
of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people, quickly became a concept relevant to
land ownership in Hawaii . A historical account such as this, is only one instance of the American
values of ownership and power intersecting to facilitate a desire for privacy. It is clear that Americans
for centuries have valued their privacy as evidenced by the relationship between Hawaii and America,
but nonetheless it is unclear as to what extent Americans can exercise their privacy. To further
understand why the right for privacy needs to be explicitly addressed in American law, recent

Designing a Driving Instructor Robot
Driver Bot Paper
Introduction/Overall Project Description
The idea for the Driver Bot came from a simple discussion about driver s education.
Driver s training and education are big events for young adults, but sometimes learning to drive from a
parent or from an online course can be too stressful. The Driver Bot was born from a need to invent a
new way to teach driving. Unlike online courses, the Driver Bot gives a better and more realistic
physical representation of driving. However, modern simulators can actually placed drivers in
situations, forcing to react to virtual situations. The Driver Bot was designed to be cheaper than these
simulators. This project is just a smaller scale of the actual project idea.

The simulators place drivers in dangerous situation without any risks. Drivers can gain experience
driving through snow, fog, and other environmental hazards.
Another type of modern day training is done through the computer. Online courses from sites such as
Driversed.com can help with not only training but educating drivers. In fact, training through the
computer has been an efficient way for many companies to train drivers.
Companies such as Instructional Technology, Inc., use these interactive computer lessons called
TREAD 1 that teach much like driving simulators8. Driver s training no longer has to be only on road
experience, and technology continues to evolve to give new ways to train.
Smart Cars
As our final project demonstrates a car undergoing a driver s education test, the car runs in
autonomous mode and gets information about its surroundings by using sensors. Using programming
in NQC, the RCX s job is to complete the course successfully while using the
DMV s rules for the road in California. However, past the Lego pieces and the simple programming in
NQC, this simple RCS is a small example of an autonomous robot car that is

British Responsibility For The Opium War
British Responsibility for the Opium War
The outcome of the Opium War marked a new age of western imperialism, effectively forcing China s
doors open to the West. How did such a war come about in the first place? At the heart of the conflict
lay incompatible market ideologies: China s interests were in maintaining their traditional tributary
system and suppressing the opium trade, while the British desired free trade and diplomatic equality.
In a complex storyline filled with misunderstandings and failed negotiations, the events leading up to
the war show how in the end, by failing to adequately compensate for the destructive effects of the
opium trade, Great Britain was responsible for the start of the Opium War.
To begin with, the opium trade took a direct hit to China s prosperity, which set the stage for future
tensions. Before the illegal industry was well established in the early 19th century, China benefited
from trade with Great Britain, selling a steadily increasing amount of tea in exchange for precious
silver. However, in the late eighteenth century, the British managed to reverse this trade balance by
exporting opium instead of silver. By the mid 1820s, China s silver was rapidly flowing out of China
to keep up with the insatiable demand for opium. The outflow of silver caused the price to rise eighty
percent between 1800 1830, placing a heavy burden on farmers, whose taxes were assessed in the
precious metal.
Not only was China losing the basis of its monetary

Reflection On Writing
At this point in the semester I do not really feel any different than in the beginning. For the most part
my writing has stayed the same as when I first started. The biggest change I have experienced in my
writing is my ability to organize more effectively and to manage my time better. Although my writing
has not changed increasingly, some parts of the writing process has been improved such as
organization and time management.
One thing I have learned during the course of this semester thus far are the terms logos, pathos, and
ethos. I would not say that knowing the terms have significantly affected how I read now, as I feel like
the skills needed to use logos, pathos, and ethos I had already been using. However, now I know terms
and because of such I am able to organize the thoughts more sufficiently. My writing problems have
consistently been a struggle with organization. Having specific terms for skill I already used has made
organization much easier as I can categorize my critical thinking.
I have written reading responses and comparison essays before so I cannot say that the writing in this
class has impacted my writing significantly. Overall my writing has not changed much, however my
organization skill have improved. I have always preferred organization and lists and categorizing, so
learning what logos, pathos, and ethos are has given me a knew way to categorize information and has
improved my organization and time management. While I feel confident that I haves used

Gregor Mendel, The Father Of Modern Genetics
Mendelian Inheritance in Brassica Rapa Gregor Mendel, also known as the father of modern genetics,
revolutionized the world s understanding of the inheritance of traits when he experimented with
various pea plants over multiple generations. In performing this experiment, he discovered the law of
independent assortment and law of segregation. The Law of independent assortment states that genes
located on separate chromosomes segregate independently of each other. The law of segregation states
that two alleles segregate at different gametes so that each gamete receives only one allele. Brassica
Rapa plants were developed by Dr. Paul Williams and a team of scientists at the University of
Wisconsin. They are effective for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of the compartments were subsequently watered until the soil was completely wet. The six tray
container was then placed on a rack under a source of light. Over a period of several weeks, the plants
were not given water. During the following week, the flowers were opened and the seeds were
collected from the dry seed pods. These were the seeds which were used to germinate the F2
generation. After the seeds were harvested, they were aloud to dry for one week. Paper towels with
grids drawn upon them were laid out on the germination container and then the seeds were placed in
each box. The seeds were sprayed using a spray bottle and then covered with the germination
container top. A picture of Brassica Rapa is shown to the right:
The plants were not exposed to direct sunlight but were rather placed under LED lights; they were
watered every day except on weekends for the duration of the experiment. On week 2, There was a
total of 17 plants collected. Then, the phenotypes of the plants were observed in which 13 of them
were purple and 4 were green. On week 3, two plants that did not have the purple pigment present
were thrown away. There was a total of 18 plants in which the observed phenotype was 16 purple and
2 green. On week 4, one green plant was thrown away, yielding a total of 17 flowers. A paintbrush was
used to transfer the pollen to each of the flowers. This was

A Discussion On Catechism s Role In Western Civilization
A Discussion on Catechism
Religion had a prominent role in Western Civilization because it established morals and changed
social interaction among humans. Christianity was one of the most influential and widespread
religions, due to, its individualism that made each human become accountable for their own actions.
Catechism is a written guide to christians to better understand the principles of their religion. Martin
Luther was a Christian who occupied the chair of Biblical Theology and stressed the importance of
learning the full extent of Christianity. He was so devoted to his beliefs that he even sparked
controversy in the pope s ability to remit temporal punishment (64).
Martin Luther found a key importance in teaching people about their religion through the use of daily
readings of the Catechism. Martin Luther received a doctorate in theology in 1512 and used his
knowledge to educate people (64). It upset Martin that people accepted christianity ... Show more

The audience that needed God s word the most in Martin Luther s eyes was children and uneducated
people. In addition, this education needs to start at home and dedicate at least one day of the week to

represent the minimum of knowledge required for a Christian. Whoever does not posses it should not
be reckoned among Christians nor admitted into sacrament, just as a craftsman who does not know the
rules and practices of his craft is rejected and considered incompetent (67). Martin Luther wanted the

Drugs In America Research Paper
Drugs in America
Studies show that the rate of drug overdose has been a growing epidemic throughout the United States
for decades (Rudd, 2016, p. 1323). The rate of deaths resulting from drug overdoses has increased by
over 100 percent since the year 2000 (Rudd, 2016, p. 1323). The danger that drugs pose on nations are
obvious. There has been a long history of drugs in the United States, leading to many changes in rules
and regulations in regards to how they are handled. Furthermore, several controversial things have
occurred over time such as the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 being passed, drug schedules and
classifications, CSA regulations, and numerous ongoing debates related to the legal and medical usage

Examples of Schedule IV drugs contain some stimulants, minor tranquilizers, and depressants
(Belenko Spohn, 2015, p. 20). Lastly, Schedule V drugs are described as morphine, codeine, cough
medicines, and anti diarrhea drugs containing opium (Belenko Spohn, 2015, p. 20). They are basically
prescription drugs that have only limited risk of physical or psychological dependency and low
potential for abuse (Belenko Spohn, 2015, p. 20). Without a valid prescription, it is illegal to possess
any drug that is listed in the Controlled Substances Act Schedules (Belenko Spohn, 2015, p.

The Public Sphere Within Theatre
The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen
Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers to
the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public matters of
interest and public issues. Habermas writes: the audience does not constitute a space for spectators and
listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate. (Habermas in Balme 2012).
The Public sphere has now become a space, a stage, for performers, speakers and protesters to have a
voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the audience, spectators and listeners.
On reading Christopher B. Balme s The theatrical public sphere, the concept of theatre s role in the
Public Sphere is explored. Balme traces the origins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear, conceptual
boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also little doubt that the
major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and migration, climate change, the
erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few) have all in some way a bearing on the
public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and where citizens are free to enter and engage in
discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a discursive arena located outside and between state
bureaucracies on the one hand and economics and business on the other, it occupies a crucial role in
the functioning of so called free societies. The question to be explored here is what role theatre and
performance in practice play in this realm and how performance and theatre theory can contribute to
the debates. (Balme

  • 2. Legal Consciousness And The United States In this essay, we will discuss the term of legal consciousness, and the importance of why the concept was developed and most importantly the weaknesses and strengths of legal consciousness in the United States. We will then look together to first define what is legal consciousness? Legal consciousness is what people think and say about the law. It is often referred to as social consciousness. More simply put, legal consciousness is the attitude people with regards to the law and this may vary amongst people from different class, gender, educational backgrounds, race, ethnicity and political views. It is the legal awareness of the public about the law and how the law works and what is legal vs. illegal. An individual s legal consciousness gives meaning to one s perspective of how they think about the law. Legal consciousness changed with time and space according to legal scholars. Legal consciousness helps us differentiate the gap between the law on he book and the law in action (Susan S. Silbey, page 1). Ewick Silbey describe consciousness as engaging in the social movement and predominance. (Susan S. Silbey, page 333). Ewick and Silbey describe as before, with, and against the law, are described asa the cultural tool kit from which popular understandings of legality are constructed (Susan S. Silbey, page 349). Associated with the bulbous plant is an everlasting craze, driving people into a frenzy and showing the volatility of financial markets. The symbiotic relationship between humans and plants has always been thought to benefit humans, but what if in fact the desire behind plants, in this case the tulip, is their driving force for survival? We are instinctively drawn to gorgeous flowers, much like the way bees are. One theory could have to do with flowers being the precursor to fruits, which serve as a food source for humans. Since the creation of mankind, humans have been built to be foragers, evolving to spy flowers in an abundant landscape of colors. The humans that were successful foragers were the first to find sweet fruit to sustain them and the ones to survive. This could have resulted in natural selection favoring good foragers that could find fruits, remember their location, and differentiate them. This proposes the thought that maybe all humans recognize floral beauty in the same way because we are products of our ancestors, who evolved to be meticulous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay Comparing Two Open Universities Comparing two Open Universities within the Common Wealth: Athabasca University and the Allama Iqbal Open University at Islamabad When the Open University of the United Kingdom (OU UK) opened its doors in 1969 it was considered a revolution in higher education by many pedagogues. In the forty years that followed 80 similar higher open education institutes were established (Peters, O. 2010, p57 81). The common denominator of this new generation of distance universities is that they are open. During the OU UK inauguration Lord Crowther stated: We are open as to people ; as to places ; as to methods ; and finally to ideas (cf. Tunstall 1974, in Peters, O. 2010, p 62). • 8. Immigration, Deportation, And Family Separation By Vanessa... Are human beings considered illegal? If so, what makes a person illegal? Is it because of their race, gender, social status, sexual orientation, beliefs, etc. Or is it because they come to a place with hope of a better future despite that they aren t allowed too. By this, I m talking about the issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is the problem concerning people who illegally immigrate into the U.S. Specifically, people from areas like Central America, including Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. They usually leave behind their families in order to complete this journey and that can have dire consequences. • 9. Separating Music Into Different Categories Or Styles In Music Categories or styles in music are identified as genres. Separating music into different genres can be achieved by identifying shared traditions or conventions in musical pieces. Simon Frith argues that genre categorization is a tool for record companies in order to gain maximum profit from their recording artists The underlying record company problem, in other words, how to turn music into a commodity, is solved in generic terms (1996, p. 76). Articles by Reebee Garofalo, Simon Frith, Hector Qirko and Arnold Shaw explore how musical genres are constructed, defined, negotiated, and maintained. An example of this is Rhythm Blues , originally referred to as race music, the term rhythm blues trended in 1949 as a means to describe music recorded by black artists. Relating back to the overlapping of musical styles in genre, rhythm blues serves as a direct and immediate source for styles of rock n roll that rose to popularity in the mid twentieth century, however its historical impact, as well as its artists and character have had limited acknowledgement (Shaw, 1980, p.71). Garofalo (1987) even claimed until the Second World War Black and country and western writers were routinely excluded from the society (p.78). An example of this suppressed attention are the early recordings of Rock n Roll artist Elvis Presley, Shaw notes that, before gaining fame, Presley s five Sun disks had included songs originally written and recorded by a black Rhythm Blues artist (1980. P.71). Shaw argues that while rock n roll is a white derivative of R B the two can easily be distinguished, presenting a number of distinctions, R B comprises the 1940s and early 50s era, while rock n roll surfaces in the mid 1950s (1980, p.74). Other distinctions include sociological aspects, such as R B being the product of the black experience in a segregated world...forcing them to find entertainment in...black locations (Shaw, 1980, p.74). In this aspect, R B has been maintained as a musical aspect throughout its history, best explained by this quote from Honkers and Shouters (1978) R B stemmed from a rich, indigenous folk tradition whereas pop music was a mishmash of European influences (Shaw, 1980, p.78). R B received recognition in its role for the emergence of rock n roll in the 1970s, providing an example of how those two genres have been negotiated by scholars to offer roots and origins of genres in popular ... Even though it is not said in the poem it is quite obvious to the reader that the free bird represents White Americans and the caged bird represents African Americans. Throughout the poem Angelou carries out the extended metaphor to express her view on society. The way the free bird claims to own the sky associates with the ideas of power and choice, this indicates an air of arrogance and selfishness as the White Americans assume that it is their place to own and dominate the world, despite others desires and needs. • 12. The Effects Of Homeschooling On Children And Public Schools Introduction: Homeschooling is becoming much more common now than it was years ago. Parents are now preferring to homeschool their children over public school due to many reasons such as religion, safety, academic quality travel, family togetherness, separation of government and school, mastery over grades, expenses, and focusing on learning plans made for the student. Public schools are institutions, which are funded by tax revenues from the government. Schools have boundaries to then figure out which students will attend a certain school to avoid overcrowding. The schools curriculum is drawn up by the state and they follow a standardized testing result and other measurements, which gives the state information of how the school is performing. According to Isabel Shaw, there are an abundance of pros and cons of deicing to homeschool your children. Some key points from this article were: Homeschooling Pros The advantages of homeschooling your children are that as a parent you get to decide what your child learns and at what age depending on their ability and level of interested and as a student you get to choose how long you want to learn about a topic and when you want to. Upon further inspection, I found that the bird had appalling injuries to its neck, head, and wing. The top of the head had a horrible gash which gave the bird the appearance of having a shaved head. Matthew 1 And Luke 3 Controversy There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding the differences in the accounts of the birth and up through the early years of Jesus life in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. Of course, one of the greatest points of controversy is the difference in the genealogies in Matthew 1 and Luke 3. It is vitally important to remember that the two accounts are written to two different people groups and focuses on two different faces or distinctions of the life of Jesus. Matthew is written to the Jews with a focus on Jesus as King of the Jews, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Luke is written to the Gentiles with a focus on Jesus as the Son of Man, or the Prophet emphasizing his humanity. Matthew traces the lineage through the line of kings back to David ... These shepherds then come and find the babe as foretold, wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. It is evident from this account that Jesus is likely less than 24 hours old at this time. The shepherds then spread the wonderful news. Jesus was circumcised the 8th day there in Bethlehem. The stories in Winesburg, Ohio do grapple with Anderson s intended theme, and a story such as Hands clearly illustrates what he means by grotesque (Ellis 2). The hands belong to Wing Biddlebaum, formerly Adolph Myers, a teacher in a Pennsylvania village who was beaten and run out of town for caressing boys. Anderson Cleveland 4 is oblique about Wing s homosexuality, for the thrust of the story. In the story Death in the Woods, as a girl, Mrs. Grimes was sexually abused her German owner (Doneskey 1 3). The Philosopher provides a more subtle illustration of grotesque and introduces the idea that a grotesque need not be pitiable or tragic; in fact, he can be wildly humorous as demonstrated at the beginning of the story with the philosopher s description (Doneskey 1 3). Genetic engineering involves the transfer of foreign genes into the cells of animals or plants at an early stage in their development so that they develop with desired characteristics. Selective breeding is the process in which humans manipulate the gene pool by breeding certain organisms with desired phenotypic qualities and characteristics (such as high milk yield and disease resistant). The trait can be reliably passed on to the next generation and produce offsprings that meet specific requirements. This increases the rate at which stock improvements are made. By crossing two organisms with dominant alleles for a particular trait, it will be noticeable that some of their offspring will express the desirable characteristics. This can be shown using a monohybrid cross like such: Dominance and Recessive F1 Generation T=Tall, t=short TtxTt T t T TT Tt t Tt tt Phenotypic ratio: 3:1 (Tall=75% Short=25%) Genotypic ratio: 1:2:1 (TT=25% Tt=50% tt=25%) As shown in the monohybrid cross we can see that the offsprings resulted in 75% tall and 25% short which is a desirable characteristic that the dominant allele expresses. F2 Generation TTxTt T t T TT Tt T TT Tt Phenotypic ratio: 4:4 (Tall=100%) Genotypic ratio: 2:2 (TT=50% Tt=50%) Shown above we can see that by crossing the F1 generation, we now get a full 100% phenotype ration expressed of the desirable trait. 50% TT and 50% Tt for the genotype that have been expressed. • 28. Differences Between Malcolm X And Martin Luther King Government Approved Freedom Despite both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. actively fighting for freedom and equality during the Civil Rights Movement, both men are not remembered equally. Undeniably, their approaches were different which resulted in conflicting ideals and different outcomes. These differences are highlighted through the comparison of Dr. King s Letter from Birmingham Jail to Malcolm X s speech of The Ballot or the Bullet . Both Malcolm X and Dr.King advocated for change regarding the treatment of the black community, but their perceptions of the timeline for change varied. Malcolm X was prepared to abandon the current system and separate the black community entirely to achieve immediate equality even if this called for violence. Whereas Dr. King advocated for all groups to think and act differently for total equality and true freedom. Ultimately, Dr. King understood that for complete change it might be a longer process, but he was willing to be respectful and encourage this movement peacefully. Considering the men sought different types of change to achieve their freedom, they had to target different audiences to advocate their plans towards. As Martin Luther King Jr. desired change throughout society and the systematic injustices, he had to target those who did not personally experience his inequality, but would still listen and respect him. Critical Analysis Of Forrest Gump Its hero, played by Tom Hanks, is a thoroughly decent man with an IQ of 75, who manages between the 1950s and the 1980s to become involved in every major event in American history. And he survives them all with only honesty and kindness as his shields. And yet this is not a heartwarming story about a mentally retarded man. That cubbyhole is much too small and limiting for Forrest Gump. The movie is more of a meditation on our times, as seen through the eyes of a man who lacks cynicism and takes things for exactly what they are. Watch him carefully and you will understand why some people are criticized for being too clever by half. Forrest is clever by just exactly enough. Tom Hanks may be the only actor who could have played the role. I can t think of anyone else as Gump, after seeing how Hanks makes him into a person so dignified, So straight ahead. The performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths. There were plenty of trials and tribulations that could have made Louie give up, but the worst was being stranded on a raft only to be found by the Japanese and thrown into a POW camp. During these times Louie was sick, starving, and being tortured by a sadistic guard they called the Bird. With small acts of defiance, he was able to preserve his dignity and persevere to make it through, even though every time he passed one obstacle, he felt there were thousands more. The fatty acid structure is one of the most fundamental categories of biological lipids, and is commonly used as a building block of more structurally complex lipids. Fats that include these molecules are unsaturated fats. Other fatty acids have no double bonds. Fats that include these fatty acids are saturated fats. In most human health situations, the consumption of unsaturated fats is preferred to the consumption of saturated fats. Like carbohydrates, lipids can also be categorized into simple and complex. Simple lipids are defined as those that are on hydrolysis yield at most two types of primary product per mole; complex lipids yield three or more primary hydrolysis products per mole. The Pros And Cons Of The Popcorn Failure Reliability is defined as the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. The operation of any electronic device generates heat and with the increasing device density of the IC chips the amount of heat flux generated by the integrated circuit chips has gone to a level of 100 200 W/(cm^2 ) [2]. Each time a device is powered up, the individual components heat up and cool down. This heating and cooling leads to thermal cycling of the electronic components which causes many problems, such as shear deformation, due to the mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of each material. Figure 2.1 shows the varying CTEs for a typical PBGA package in this research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this study, structural and thermal reliability of ball grid array packages, mainly the shear stresses and strains of critical solder balls, have been investigated using accelerated life testing. Many studies and failure analyses have been showing that interconnect failures due to mismatches of CTE during thermal cycling is the most critical mode of failure in leaded and SMT packages such as BGAs [5]. Figure 2.3 shows a schematic of what happens to the solder joints during thermal cycling due to mismatches in CTEs. It shows that at a stress free temperature, the two components, silicon and the PCB, are relaxed. Then, as the temperature increases, the PCB wants to expand at a higher rate since the PCB s CTE is 14.5 ppm/°C and the CTE of the silicon is 2.54 ppm/°C. As the temperature drops, the PCB wants to contract much quicker than the silicon. Looking at the schematic, one can see that the solder joints are having to flex and deform due to the mismatch in CTE between the two materials. Over time, these shear stresses and strains cause the solder joints to become fatigued, then cracks begin to propagate, and the package will ultimately fail once a certain number of thermal cycles have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I hypothesize that modern day Americans greatly value privacy because throughout American history and culture, citizens have been encouraged to own personal possessions such as property, people, and tangible materials while also maintaining a sense of power in relation to others within society. For example in the late 1800s, American corporations as well as economically invested individuals bought and took ownership of tribal land in Hawaii . Land was taken by Americans and claimed as private property in a culture in which the concepts of privacy and property possession were foreign. After some time, Americans possessed ownership of a majority of Hawaiian land and this allowed them the power to manipulate the land in whatever manner they deemed suitable. Privacy, the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people, quickly became a concept relevant to land ownership in Hawaii . A historical account such as this, is only one instance of the American values of ownership and power intersecting to facilitate a desire for privacy. • 46. British Responsibility For The Opium War British Responsibility for the Opium War The outcome of the Opium War marked a new age of western imperialism, effectively forcing China s doors open to the West. How did such a war come about in the first place? At the heart of the conflict lay incompatible market ideologies: China s interests were in maintaining their traditional tributary system and suppressing the opium trade, while the British desired free trade and diplomatic equality. In a complex storyline filled with misunderstandings and failed negotiations, the events leading up to the war show how in the end, by failing to adequately compensate for the destructive effects of the opium trade, Great Britain was responsible for the start of the Opium War. To begin with, the opium trade took a direct hit to China s prosperity, which set the stage for future tensions. Before the illegal industry was well established in the early 19th century, China benefited from trade with Great Britain, selling a steadily increasing amount of tea in exchange for precious silver. However, in the late eighteenth century, the British managed to reverse this trade balance by exporting opium instead of silver. By the mid 1820s, China s silver was rapidly flowing out of China to keep up with the insatiable demand for opium. The outflow of silver caused the price to rise eighty percent between 1800 1830, placing a heavy burden on farmers, whose taxes were assessed in the precious metal. However, now I know terms and because of such I am able to organize the thoughts more sufficiently. My writing problems have consistently been a struggle with organization. Having specific terms for skill I already used has made organization much easier as I can categorize my critical thinking. I have written reading responses and comparison essays before so I cannot say that the writing in this class has impacted my writing significantly. Overall my writing has not changed much, however my organization skill have improved. I have always preferred organization and lists and categorizing, so learning what logos, pathos, and ethos are has given me a knew way to categorize information and has improved my organization and time management. While I feel confident that I haves used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Gregor Mendel, The Father Of Modern Genetics Mendelian Inheritance in Brassica Rapa Gregor Mendel, also known as the father of modern genetics, revolutionized the world s understanding of the inheritance of traits when he experimented with various pea plants over multiple generations. In performing this experiment, he discovered the law of independent assortment and law of segregation. The Law of independent assortment states that genes located on separate chromosomes segregate independently of each other. The law of segregation states that two alleles segregate at different gametes so that each gamete receives only one allele. Brassica Rapa plants were developed by Dr. Paul Williams and a team of scientists at the University of Wisconsin. They are effective for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of the compartments were subsequently watered until the soil was completely wet. The six tray container was then placed on a rack under a source of light. Over a period of several weeks, the plants were not given water. During the following week, the flowers were opened and the seeds were collected from the dry seed pods. These were the seeds which were used to germinate the F2 generation. After the seeds were harvested, they were aloud to dry for one week. Paper towels with grids drawn upon them were laid out on the germination container and then the seeds were placed in each box. The seeds were sprayed using a spray bottle and then covered with the germination container top. A picture of Brassica Rapa is shown to the right: The plants were not exposed to direct sunlight but were rather placed under LED lights; they were watered every day except on weekends for the duration of the experiment. On week 2, There was a total of 17 plants collected. Then, the phenotypes of the plants were observed in which 13 of them were purple and 4 were green. On week 3, two plants that did not have the purple pigment present were thrown away. There was a total of 18 plants in which the observed phenotype was 16 purple and 2 green. On week 4, one green plant was thrown away, yielding a total of 17 flowers. A paintbrush was used to transfer the pollen to each of the flowers. This was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Discussion On Catechism s Role In Western Civilization A Discussion on Catechism Religion had a prominent role in Western Civilization because it established morals and changed social interaction among humans. Christianity was one of the most influential and widespread religions, due to, its individualism that made each human become accountable for their own actions. Catechism is a written guide to christians to better understand the principles of their religion. Martin Luther was a Christian who occupied the chair of Biblical Theology and stressed the importance of learning the full extent of Christianity. He was so devoted to his beliefs that he even sparked controversy in the pope s ability to remit temporal punishment (64). • 50. Drugs In America Research Paper Drugs in America Studies show that the rate of drug overdose has been a growing epidemic throughout the United States for decades (Rudd, 2016, p. 1323). The rate of deaths resulting from drug overdoses has increased by over 100 percent since the year 2000 (Rudd, 2016, p. 1323). The danger that drugs pose on nations are obvious. There has been a long history of drugs in the United States, leading to many changes in rules and regulations in regards to how they are handled. • 51. The Public Sphere Within Theatre The Public Sphere within theatre was a concept that was first delineated by philosopher Jurgen Habermas in his book titled The structural transformation of the public sphere, in which he refers to the right that all citizens hold, the right to participate and engage into discussions on public matters of interest and public issues. Habermas writes: the audience does not constitute a space for spectators and listeners but a space for speakers and addresses who engage in debate. (Habermas in Balme 2012). The Public sphere has now become a space, a stage, for performers, speakers and protesters to have a voice rather than for the preliminary use of entertainment for the audience, spectators and listeners. On reading Christopher B. Balme s The theatrical public sphere, the concept of theatre s role in the Public Sphere is explored. Balme traces the origins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Academic and artistic interest in something is usually a sure sign that matters are unclear, conceptual boundaries are blurred and that old certainties are anything but that. There is also little doubt that the major challenges we face: the media revolution, globalization and migration, climate change, the erosion of public finances and services (to name just a few) have all in some way a bearing on the public sphere, the realm where issues are debated and where citizens are free to enter and engage in discourse. As the public sphere is primarily a discursive arena located outside and between state bureaucracies on the one hand and economics and business on the other, it occupies a crucial role in the functioning of so called free societies. The question to be explored here is what role theatre and performance in practice play in this realm and how performance and theatre theory can contribute to the debates. (Balme ...
