Artificial Intelligence. Essay
Artificial Intelligence: Cognitive Ability or Information Processing Computers have become an
integral part of our everyday lives. We rely upon these machines to perform innumerable tasks that we
often take for granted. Most people realize that computers are able to perform the multitude of
functions as a consequence of the programming they receive. These programs give computers a set of
instructions that governs their transition from one information processing state to another. Thus,
computational machines are able to respond to a certain set of inputs with a certain range of outputs.
In order to comprehend programs one needs only to describe these instructions in functional terms. In
this regard, computer programs are extremely similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Searle s opinion, computers can never be minds because they are inherently different from brains.
He argues that brains do not merely instantiate a program but also cause mental events by virtue of
specific neuro biological processes. Searle is essentially making the contention that brains, by virtue
of their specific biochemical properties, cause minds. Consequently, according to Searle, any artifact
that produced mental phenomena would have to be able to duplicate the specific causal powers of
brains and it could not do that just by running a formal computer program. Although it is interesting to
contemplate, Searle s argument definitely has its share of flaws. The Churchlands, as proponents in the
possibility of artificial intelligence to duplicate the mind, (yet not believers of strong AI as it was
previously defined ) do their best to illustrate these weaknesses in his theory. The primary objection
which they have with Searle s argument against the plausibility of artificial intelligence lies with the
third premise in his original proof. The Churchlands argue that this premise, which states, Syntax by
itself is neither constitutive of nor sufficient for semantics, is an assumption rather than a fact.
Additionally, they contend that to assume its truth is tantamount to begging the question against
classical AI. Classical AI rests on the premise that if one can

Essay On Treasure Fleets
My favorite scholarly pursuit to date is in a category of its own, combining most of the examples in
the given prompt. It began roughly three years ago when I first read about the Spanish treasure fleets
of the early 1700s in one of my history books. The subject was just barely brushed upon, but it was
enough to spark my curiosity on the topic and I decided to look up more information. After reading
several books and individual articles, I focused my intended research on a single fleet: the 1715
treasure fleet. Consisting of eleven ships, the 1715 fleet had been laden with gold, fine china, and
other valuables. Spain was in desperate need of funds due to the War of Succession, so the large
treasure fleet was not an uncommon sight. In what could be considered an either brave or
spectacularly stupid move, the commander decided to remain in Havana, Cuba, ... Show more content

After even more digging, I also found a possible link to the infamous pirate Samuel Bellamy, who had
attempted to find the San Miguel not long before his turn to piracy. I believe even now that the ship
may have sunk somewhere east of Amelia Island off the coast of Florida. A current expedition,
however, is still searching the Nassau Sound. I cannot put enough emphasis on just how much this
pursuit sharpened my research skills and expanded my interest in both the environment and history.
One bit of information led to another, and I learned more from this research than I probably would
have in a normal high school classroom setting. Many of the things I learned will actually apply
directly to my major in environmental science as well, which makes all of that research even more
valuable to me. The fact that I had a lot of fun in the process just makes it even

Courbet’s “the Stone Breakers”
Courbet (1819 1877) is a realistic painter, in that a majority of his work is about everyday scenes,
often depicting peasants and working people in rural areas. Howerver, Courbet is also an artist who
challenged the traditional painting in the middle of the 19th century. Courbet introduced a new kind of
realism, which focused on a rugged depiction of nature and people rather than an idealized and
artificial one. Most paintings of the time showed wealthy people, whereas Courbet who was politically
involved in socialist causes, applied his political beliefs to art. (Crapo: 240 241) Crapo writes that for
Courbet realism posed a direct challenge to the aesthetic of the academic painters. It meant the
unadorned depiction of everyday scenes and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Alexander, 1965) Alexander writes that Courbet studied Renaissance and Baroque paintings from
Northern Europe as well as from Italy, and that he liked to mix classical visual ideas with the
straightforward symbolism of children s drawings and popular prints, and the mechanical realism of
the still novel photography. (Alexander: 447) At the time he painted Stone Breakers he made another
work called The Wrestlers which shows two very muscular, almost naked men, wrestling in a field.
Their bulky shapes make them look almost like mythological heroes from Ancient Greece. The
excavation of Assyrian sculpture at the time had a major influence on the look of the naked figures
and the position of figures in Courbet s work. (Alexander: 448) Assyrian frieze sculpture was notable
for exaggeration of subcutaneous elements, blood vessels, muscles, and bones... (Alexander: 449) Yet
during his career he often faced criticism for being too rigid in his style. (Shapiro, 165) His work was
also accused of being primitive and vulgar. (Schapiro: 166) This criticism came not only from art
patrons and spectators, but also from other artists, such as Delacroix, also considered a French realist.
(Schapiro: 166) Schapiro writes that while Courbet would be influential on later painters, his audience
may have not only or primarily been other

Wiser, By Reid Hastie
Wiser
Reid Hastie, in his book Wiser, discusses many of the common points of how groups succeed and fail
mainly due to group think. Throughout his years of research, he found a number of attributes that
effective teams have in common. From his book, we have extracted ten important lessons that we
believe are the most important for teams to learn and implement to be high performing. These findings
also relate to the 5 Dysfunctions of a Team that are outlined by Patrick Lencioni. Teachings taken
from Wiser are symptoms, or indicators, of dysfunctions within a team, and many of his solutions help
teams to overcome certain dysfunctions.
The first learning we took from the book is the cascading effect within teams. This effect is created ...

With such clear goals to reach, teams or individuals can create amazing results. Tournaments create
these results, because it focuses on the results and not the process. It spreads teams across the
company, or even the globe, making independent decisions from one another, and the teams do not
share their methods only the results. By not having every team deliberate with one another, each
individual team is able to come up with their solution and present it without having to get a group to
agree with them. With tournaments, cascades and polarization is not an issue, but information can still
be shared.
Another way to avoid issues within deliberating groups is through averages. Taking a statistical
average response or answer is better than a group deliberating on an issue. It takes the emotions and
flaws that comes from being human out of the equation and just focuses on logic. In most groups
taking the average might be the best way to go. When responses are taken without deliberation, but
statistics people are more inclined to vote based on what they know, and not on the feelings or views
of others. The average of these responses has been found to, in many cases, be better than any
individual.
A failure teams must be on the lookout for is hidden profiles. Hidden Profiles occur when common
knowledge information is more likely to be shared than information held by only a few people.
Common knowledge that the whole group knows carries much

Waknuk Essay
I am outraged! Today the inspector brought in this strange box which somehow displayed a moving
picture. The entirety of Waknuk protested against this foreign object, as it is surely the work of the
devil, but he insisted that it was sent from the government in Rigo. Finally, after everyone settled
down the inspector proceeded to show us something absolutely horrendous. The box showed a
horrible world which appeared to be ruled by mutants, big grotesque mutants with massive noses
upturned like a pigs and drooping skin hanging miles below their eye sockets. There is also a large
bone jutting out above their eyes in place of eyebrows and an outrageous flap of skin where the upper
lip should be. Everybody knows that man is the image of God and that the norm is the image of God.
These mutants are obvious blasphemies that are accursed in the sight of God and man. Evil
blasphemies that are a threat to our purity. As Nicholson s Repentances says Watch thou for the mutant

The fact is that the fringes are getting out of control, just last month my sweet little baby girl was
stolen by one of those horrendous mutants. For all we know this message could be a warning from the
government that mutants will take over, perhaps it is not even from the government at all and it is a
threat from the fringes. Regardless of what this video means or who it is sent from I will always live in
fear of mutants taking over Waknuk until the day I

Political And Social Changes During The Progressive Era
The Progressive Era, lasting from the 1890s until the 1920s, was a chapter in American history that
was characterized by social activism and countless reform movements. Political and social reforms
were just two of the numerous movements that occurred during this time period. Although many
political and social changes were introduced to America during the Progressive Era, there were also
many continuities that transpired. The 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments are all examples of social and
political changes that took place, but corruption and civil rights for African Americans continued to
remain defective throughout and even after the Progressive Era.
An abundant amount of political changes occurred during the Progressive Era, beginning with ...

The 19th amendment was the last major reform of the Progressive movement. Promptly after the
conclusion of Progressive Era, the Woman s Civil Right movement hit a rough patch and women were
hastily urged to remain and return back into the house; cooking, cleaning and producing babies.
Around the same time, the majority of reform movements went silent, no progress was made and very
few decided to continue the reforms. The 18th amendment was also extremely unpopular and proved
to be a momentous failure. Many people often ignored the law and it gave way for a huge profit to be
made off the illegal selling of alcohol. The 21st amendment was ratified on December 5, 1933, and
repealed the previous 18th which prohibited alcohol. The most significant failure of the Progressive
Era was the fact that civil rights for African Americans remained the same, no progress or reforms
were successfully practiced during the movement. During the Progressive Era, segregation and Jim
Crow laws were not decreased, instead, they were supported and encouraged by many white

Humans will be pushed to a new future: obesity, lazy, careless, and an increasing in respiratory and
cardiovascular diseases. For example, in Wall E , the movie gives a clear example of what this world
will turn into. The technology is pushing us into that type of world: the empty world full of garbage,
no trees, plants, animals, etc. There is rarely any life on earth. People are ignoring their surroundings,
going nowhere in life because they stopped for watching technology. They aren t creating any
memories and friends, not even caring about their emotional, mental, and physical health, even if they
deny it. Some of these events are already happening, Global Warming. In China, there are hospitals
filled with sick people, mostly children who are vulnerable to all the smog. All of the horror happened
because China wanted to succeed and go further in the world of technology, and this is how they
ended up: people breathing in chemicals wherever they go, not able to see the sun or even other cars
on the highways, dying from the toxic air around them. These course of events is where the machines

The Black Death left more than an impact on the population of Florence and Siena in Italy, it impacted
the economy, the religious views, and the art of the thirteenth century. Millard Meiss in his book
Painting In Florence And Siena After The Black Death highlights the changes that occur in the artistic
world in Florence and Siena after the Black Death hits in 1348, 1363, and 1374. He focuses on the
similarities between the two cities and reasons behind them such as the common experience of
economic failure, pestilence, social conflict, their fear, sense of guilt, and varieties of their religious
response (P. 8).

The chapter is structured to tell of the economic and political crises the cities experienced leading up
to the Black Death then moves onto the effects the plague had on culture and art. In the section about
the Black Death, Meiss used statistics of deaths in the cities to prove himself credible on the subject
but did not state the source from which he got the numbers. He also included anecdotes from survivors
such as Angolo di Tura to give a sense of imagery of the bodies piled up in the streets, piling them up
tier upon tier as merchandise is stowed in a ship (P. 65). In the section labeled The Effect Upon
Culture And Art, Meiss talks about the new opinions on art specifically about religious art, which
there was a new demand for. He explains in detail after the plague people led lives of irresponsible
pleasure. The reason Meiss talked about this consequence of the plague the most in the chapter was to
show how the people of the two cities lived each day like it was their last and became self indulgent.
He ties the conclusion of the chapter back to art and how the artists of the time transitioned into a new

Fascism In Germany
Fascism succeeded in Germany, not as a result of Hitler being elected. There were many factors that
lead Hitler and the Nazi party to succeed. Hitler took advantage of situations such as the Great
Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of Germany.
Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members of Reichstag to
pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by rewarding the people
of Germany with organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through joy. The Great
Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the Hyperinflation of
1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many Germans encountered
unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price declines of commodities and also
the declining of markets. With many Germans facing unemployment this meant they were not able to
earn money so it was difficult to get food or other necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the
opportunity to reach out to the people of Germany who were outraged and worried about their future.
So, this economic tragedy brought new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them
to gain more popularity. With more support and popularity, the Nazi Party kept on growing and
becoming more powerful. In January 1933 Hitler was designated as Chancellor. He did not have much
power at the beginning of

Vedhara et al. (2000) noticed that some tests of working memory were affected by stress while others

stress affect WM were noticed when Oei et al. (2006) found that when participants stressed WM was
significantly impaired during high workloads, but not during low WM loads. However, Schoofs et al.
(2008) found that WM was impaired in both high and low workloads. They also discovered that the
longer a task was performed the better participants did even when stressed. In research to find what
makes working memory tasks so difficult under stressed conditions Weerda et al. (2010) used fMRI to
isolate the effects of stress on WM to encoding and retrieval. It is known that working memory is
affected by stress, however more research in the field is needed to discover to what extent and exactly
how it is affected. The goal of this study is to broaden the current understanding of how stress affects
WM. Participants will be exposed to a stress inducing situation or a controlled, non stressful situation
followed by a high or low load WM task. Achievement on the WM task along with a self report will
be examined to determine whether or not WM was affected and which process; encoding,
maintenance, or retrieval, was affected most. It is hypothesized that stressed participants will perform

Compare And Contrast Augustine And Worldview
What a man hopes for is the central tenant to his worldview. That worldview is not only the lens
through which one views the world, but the expression through which the world shapes how one
views the world. In a way, worldview colors what we see in the world, all the while those same things
are shaping that very same worldview into something new and different. Ultimately, where our hope
lies always remains central to worldview. This is especially true in our view of the physical dimension.
How one views the material world and human bodies in relation to human souls and the afterlife is
fundamental to one s worldview. Plato, the Late Classical Greek philosopher, and Saint Augustine, the
Catholic Bishop of the North African city of Hippo, both made their views on the material world and
human bodies clear in their writings and dialogues. While Plato s hope rested in an ethereal bodiless
existence, Augustine hoped in the redemption and reconciliation of the body through Christ. Plato
made the source of his hope abundantly clear in his dialogue, Phaedo, There is good hope that on
arriving where I am going, if anywhere, I shall acquire what has been our chief preoccupation in our
past life (Phaedo, 67b c). Plato s ultimate hope and desire was to attain real wisdom. He had a true
conundrum, however: he believed that the physical world was by very nature evil. Not only that, but
he believed the physical dimension to which our bodies bind us was altogether false. In fact, he

Political Advocacy in Anarchist Punk Music Essay
Political Advocacy in Anarchist Punk Music
Anarchist political advocacy has been a driving force in punk music since its emergence in the 1970s.
Although the basic philosophy has remained unchanged, punks have significantly altered the ways
they espouse their beliefs, over time becoming more militant and directly confrontational with those
that hold power. This paper attempts use quantitative and qualitative analysis to determine how
significantly anarcho punk political advocacy has changed between the early 1980s and present day.
Additionally, this paper argues that increased militancy is a byproduct of the progressive
masculinization of punk music, which generates confusion over political roles. This role confusion

The data for the bands were pooled into groups for their respective historical time periods. The study
additionally employed qualitative analysis of the lyrics of key songs from the bands, and gave
consideration to documented political and social activism beyond the bands music.
Results and Analysis
Descriptive statistical analysis of the song data indicates that contemporary US punks are much more
likely to write songs with lyrics about the state or other insider institutions. US punks are also more
likely to address insiders with the personal pronoun you , suggesting a major shift in the rhetorical
structure of punk music over a period of less than 20 years. Table 1 summarizes the raw data by group.

Toothpaste companies are still growing strongly, therefore additional firms are trying to enter the

Bargaining Power of Suppliers
Define: Pressure suppliers can put onto their customers by increasing prices, decreasing the quality of
items, and minimizing availability
Toothpaste manufacturers depend on outside sources for their caps, tubs, and ingredients to produce
toothpaste. If for some reason one of these items are not available it may affect production of the item.
Because of this, supplies depend heavily on their outside sources and have a huge impact on the
production of the product. There is a high level of competition amongst suppliers which aids in
reducing the prices to producers. Reducing the prices to producers also reduces the price to
consumers. There are many suppliers in this market which allows multiple firms to prosper without
stealing market from another business. As a consumer in this market, if one company has issues
collecting materials, increases prices, or alters the quality of the item, I am always able to switch over
to another brand.
Environment in this force is medium to low competitive wise.
Bargaining Power of Buyers
Define: Pressure consumers can put on businesses to get them to supply better quality products,
superior customer service, and decreased prices.
The buyers in this sector are individual households. People use toothpaste for their own personal use.
The customer power is magnified when the market has many sellers and fewer customers. The

Summary Of What The Best College Students Do
In the first half of chapter three of What the Best College Students do, Bain expressed peoples
thinking about their thinking. He stated that a human being can understand what they are thinking and
therefore they can control what they are or who they will become. Bain agreed that people s abilities
can improve as people understand and learn how their minds work. It is unbelievable that one can be a
prisoner of their own thoughts; according to Bain, this is because we have not known anything else.
The only way we can escape our mental jail would be exactly those thoughts. Bain suggests that when
we were babies we did something fascinating; we learned patterns and built models of how the world

Ergonomics and Good Work Habits
Ergonomics is the scientific, interdisciplinary study of individuals and their physical relationship to
their environment. Ergonomics can be further defined as the design of the workplace, equipment,
machine, tool, product, environment, and system, taking into consideration human s physical,
physiological, biomechanical, and psychological capabilities. Ergonomic design is the application of
this body of knowledge to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs, and environments for
safe, comfortable and effective human use. The term ergonomics is derived from the Greek word
ergos meaning work and nomos meaning natural laws of or study of. In the United States, the term

Ergonomists have helped many businesses improve working conditions and employee health issues
related to computer and office work. In many cases, most employers are responsible for any health
issues that may arise from their employees due to work hazards. Work hazards may be caused by
many different factors in the environment. In the average computer workstation, employees are prone
to over a dozen hazards. There exist two factors that can prevent this: forming good work habits and
ergonomically designed computer workstations. These work hazards can cause several different
injuries such as, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD), and Repetitive
Motion Disorder (RMD). They are described as painful conditions of the hands, arms, neck, and back
that develop over days, weeks or years. Epidemiological research has determined that if these
biomechanical conditions are present, the incidence of work related injuries increase. These conditions
are therefore known as risk factors for musculoskeletal injury. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) takes
place from the repeated physical movements of certain body parts which result in damage to tendons,

Theories Of Personality And Leadership Assessments Essay
Introduction There are multiple theories of personality and leadership assessments that have proven
effective in helping individuals achieve their full career potential. The Big Five theory of personality,
for example, measures the five broad areas of personality, including extraversion, agreeableness,
conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (Srivastava, 2015). Other types of
assessments, such as the more simple leadership assessment we explored, simply measure leadership
qualities, such as emotional intelligence and confidence. In exploring a couple of such resources in
more depth, such as the leadership assessment provided by the University of Kent s Career
Enhancement Center, as well as the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator, it is clear that
understanding more about oneself can lead to enhanced career choices. Based on the work of Carl
Jung, Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs developed the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator, a
self inventory geared toward helping individuals determine their personality types and individual areas
of strength. By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help
people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier
lives (Cherry, 2015). This test, through helping me explore my own personality, likes and dislikes,
strengths and weaknesses, and various preferences and compatibilities, has been instrumental in

Before a participation process can be designed and implemented, one must determine if there is a
problem to begin with. I would argue the need for judgment links to tyranny. The person setting the
table for a potential process has control over how the problem is framed and if there is a problem to
begin with. Perhaps the public needs to be involved in even the planning process of the process itself?
Could this look like a group of stakeholders? If the goal is to create a horizontal, people controlled
system of decision making? A compromise that deals with the challenge articulated above is some
form of power devolution. It s not an invitation to have too many cooks in the kitchen ; rather
devolution promotes the decentralization of power and decision making. The creation of public action

Colonialism And Poverty
The foremost cause of global poverty is colonialism. After Christopher Columbus discovered the new
world in 1492, Europeans invaded the Americas, Africa, and East Asia. Today, these places are some
of the most affected by poverty. The poverty persists because the peoples of these places were killed
and enslaved. Their land, natural resources, and way of life were stolen by the colonizers. The
colonizers forced the colonies to shift from subsistence farming to cash crops, obliterating the natural
economy. Since they only grew cash crops, they were forced to buy European goods. The economy of
the colonies became locked and they became completely dependent on the colonizing country. Soon,
the colonies found themselves in debt to their colonizers. What little money these colonies were able
to make went to repay the debt, instead of going toward the development of the colony. Additionally,
since they were indebted to them, their colonizers had control over their economy. The creditors took
full advantage of this and forced the colonies to adopt neoliberalism and privatize companies and
resources, which plunged even more people into absolute poverty. Even when many of these colonies
became their own independent countries, the documentary mentioned that the debt was transferred
over to the new country, even though this was a violation of international law. This same system
continues to this day and everyday more and more people find themselves in poverty.

The Effect Of Erich Maria Remarque s All Quiet On The...
The style of writing of an author can tremendously impact the meaning and purpose of their pieces of
literature. In Erich Maria Remarque s novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the author s style of
writing has an extensive impact on how readers perceive the story. Remarque was a soldier during
World War I, providing him with first hand experience on the effects of war. These past experiences
allow him bring the novel alive using his memories. Erich Maria Remarque s style of writing has a
colossal effect on the novel because of the level of detail he uses when describing scenes and moments
of action. Using imagery and personification, Remarque paints pictures in his readers minds. When
describing the battles, he does it in such a way that the explosions can be heard, the smoke smelled,
the destruction visible. By combining his experiences with those of Paul, he brings the horrors of war
to his readers doorstep. A considerable amount of literary devices that Remarque uses is in the form of
personification. Especially when speaking of the battles and how:
The thunder of the guns swells to a single heavy roar and then breaks up again into separate
explosions. The dry bursts of the machine guns rattle. Above us the air teems with invisible swift
movement, with howls, pipings, and hisses. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

with the feeling they are apart of these battles. Almost as if they are standing there in the field or in the
trenches, watching bombs burst and smoke float heavily on the horizon. By using this personification,
Remarque is able to draw his audience into the lives of these young

In actuality their interpretations differed on the source, purpose and limitations of their Constitutional
powers effectually placing Lincoln s actions as inspiration rather than precedent. Specifically, Lincoln
s source of broad executive powers was derived from the Constitution in defense of the Constitution.
His executive authority encroached on existing federal powers previously not bestowed to the
Presidency. His encroachments were intended to be temporary war measures and were necessary to
save the constitutional government of the union. This was a temporary suspension supported by Locke
s social compact theory which influenced the writing of the Constitution. Lincoln s emancipation
proclamation both showed Constitutional restraint by applying the order only to enemy combatants as
well as by enumerating the reinstatement of elections in the south on re admittance into the Union.
This placed the ultimate authority within the Constitution. Lincoln s original insistence to follow the
fugitive slave Act as President shows that in a time of peace Lincoln would have followed the law

national policy. In contrast Roosevelt saw the Constitution as a flawed document and believed a

Sharing the same principle, Nazi eugenicists also focus in investigating heritable traits. Galton argued
that mental abilities are heritable, and people have the responsibility to maintain these natural gifts. He

eugenics, eugenicists started to investigate the role of hereditary in different diseases and

Williamson, and Lorillard, were to pay for anti smoking ads due to a lawsuit from 46 states. The states
filed a lawsuit against the major tobacco companies for Medicaid and costs incurred while treating the
sick and dying cigarette smokers. (Public Health Law Center, 2015) In 2012, the federal government
took on an effort to attack the nation s tobacco addiction with a series of advertisements highlighting
the grisly toll of smoking. (Harris, 2017) You have probably noticed one of these ads. In one TV ad, a
woman who has a hole in her neck and barely any hair on her head after suffering head and neck
cancer. (Harris, 2017)
Even today, there are many powerful advertisements focused towards a shrinking market of smokers.
They often depict the harmful effects of tobacco through graphic pictures or other startling images.
The advertisement I chose depicts a black background with a clear baby bottle full of cigarette butts.
There is smoke coming from the nipple of the baby bottle with the words, How many cigarettes a day
does your child smoke? in all white bold letters. Under the baby bottle are the words, Prevent passive
smoking in a smaller font. Through this, the image is able to convey a sense of danger and promote
awareness of the hazards of smoking around children.
In advertising, the importance of tone is used to impact a specific group of people. Setting the right
tone can convey your message to the intended audience. In the advertisement I

Iliad Women
The women of the Iliad play significant roles in the Trojan war, regardless of whether or not their role
is active. Although they do not take up arms and fight, Chryseis, Briseis, Helen, and Andromache all
impact both the outcome of the war as well as the lives and reputations of those in it.
Chryseis, the first woman to be mentioned in the Iliad, is the one who inadvertently sets off a chain of
events that would ultimately determine the outcome of the war. Because Agamemnon refused to return
her to her father when asked, despite all of his men agreeing that he should, Apollo sent down a plague
to ravage the Greeks (1: 11 55). When Agamemnon finally agrees to give her back to her father, he
only does so on the condition that Briseis, Achilles woman, be given to him to make up for his loss (1:
178 185). Chryseis is part of the gera of Agamemnon, and because one s rewards should equal one s
excellence (deserved or not), Agamemnon is not willing to let her go without some sort of
compensation.
Briseis, the woman taken by Achilles as his prize after the sacking of Thebes, is the catalyst for
Achille s rage (1: 351 380). She represents his aristeia, his kleos, his tíme; she is his geras for their
victory over Thebes. Achilles refusal to give ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What s more, there would have been no unified Greek army without her and the oaths sworn to
Menelaus. She is an embodiment of Menelaus kleos, and her theft is an insult and a blow to his
reputation as both a husband and a leader. During the events of the Iliad, she serves to remind Paris of
his cowardice (3: 427 435). She also begins to see the error in what she has done/what has happened
to her and looks upon Menelaus in a favorable light (3: 142 145). It is said that this is because the
goddess Iris placed those feelings in her heart but it serves to imply that a great warrior and leader is
much more favorable than a cowardly

The Deviation Of Bid Prices
deviation of bid prices (a commonly used measure of dispersion in literature), quality weighted BPD,
distribution weighed BPD, and BPD with legitimate bids as alternative measures to check the
robustness of the measurement of BPD. We also note that measurement error is not a concern for all
other variables as our data was directly pulled from the firm database and the data recorded actual
transactions and the buyers and freelancers behaviors in the online labor market.
4.3.2 Buyer Contracting Model Specification
Since our dependent variable (buyer contract) is a binary variable, we estimate a logit model with
robust standard errors (Equation 3). is the latent utility a buyer i infers from project j. captures the
effect of BPD on the buyer s contract decisions. is a vector of the average freelancer s characteristics
like average experience, mean quality rating (control variables that affect the DV), and quality
dispersion (potential confounding factor that affects both the DV and BPD). The freelancer s average
experience and mean quality rating represents the average quality of the freelancers that a project
attracts. A buyer would have more high quality freelancers to choose from with a higher average
experience and mean rating, which may facilitate the buyer s contracting decision. Freelancer quality
dispersion is measured as the standard deviation of all freelancers rating (or experience), which
represents the diversity of choices a buyer has; thus, it is

Assisted Reproduction Technologies Pros And Cons
As the years, have progressed, the sensation for science has increased, as well as the aspiration for
technology. Because of this, many new ideas and innovation have been brought to us, such as the
development of ART, Assisted Reproductive Technology. The use of Assisted Reproductive
Technologies has been brought to allow pregnancies to be effectuated when the natural way is not
option. The interest for unnatural pregnancy began in the early 1800s when John Hunter, a Scottish
surgeon inseminated a woman with her husband s sperm. Due to this incidence, later in the late 1800s,
the idea for sperm donation sprouted. From there on, the curiosity for other ways to succeed in
unnatural pregnancies devolved rapidly. One of these ways was the In Vitro ... Show more content on

become accessible to a form of Assisted Reproductive Technologies. In addition, over 60% of them,
their problem of their infertility was revealed, and better treatment which was focused on their own
specific situation specifically was given. Additionally, for the other percentage of men, a rational
andrological treatment was given. Over all, the data was able to prove that different types of Assisted
Reproductive Technologies can allow for people to have a better understanding of what is occurring in
their bodies before going through a procedure, rather than only believing that ART could just be

Attila The Hun Research Paper
Attila the Hun wasn t actually a very bad guy. And his real name was actually Attila, King of the
Huns. He grew up with murderous barbarians his whole life, and still turned out to be an OK guy. It is
known that He had a lot of wives, but no one really knows how many. When he was twelve years old,
he was sent as a hostage to Rome as a peace offering. The book we read said he prowled around on all
four limbs on a chain, like an animal when he got to Rome, even until he was eventually somehow
released. The Romans believed Attila to be a normal dirty, grubby, uneducated barbarian. But Attila
was far from the stereotypical barbarian . Attila was trained to an incredible above professional level
in archery, sword fighting and horse riding. he also

Who Is Joseph Conrad Uncivilized
Through contemplation of Joseph Conrad s complex descriptions and ideas of life in Africa, or the
heart of darkness, it can be established that he is, in fact, not racist. Conrad was simply expressing the
dark, uncivilized manners of the African people to contrast the light European hoi polloi and the unfair
dehumanization of slaves in his time period. The African people that Conrad viewed as uncivilized
could be considered an act of racism; however, it is also logical to believe that he was merely trying to
demonstrate the common, effete opinion among Europeans of this time frame. This would also explain
Conrad s complex framed narrative as he didn t want to be viewed as racist. His framed narrative
could demonstrate the confusion he had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was not racist, but it could be concluded that Conrad was generally not a fan of humanity; It was
very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you,
luminous and terrifying like a flash of lightning in a serene sky: Exterminate all the brutes! (Conrad
407). At the surface, this quote seems to be a cry for the brutes or Africans to be destroyed, yet it could
also be assumed that Conrad is absolutely tired of the darkness of mankind in general. Ellie Arielle
addresses this quotation, as well, by saying; Although Kurtz is implying that the people and the
situation in the Congo are in need of some considerable control and that the only solution he sees is
extermination, what Marlow realizes is that humanity is not the cause of the problem and that the
Africans are not the heart of darkness, but that greed and lust for economic freedom is. (Arielle) The
topic of economic freedom appears frequently throughout the novella especially with the arrival of the
ribald Eldorado Exploring Expedition. It is clear that the European men are oblivious to their
surroundings and only interested in money and this is another way for Conrad to show how humanity
has let him down. One critic explains that Heart of Darkness offers an, analysis

the population is experiencing commensurate losses in purchasing power and consumer confidence.
The economic slowdown has led to less consumption, therefore affecting C C.
Cider sales and operating margin ▪ C C reported a 12% decline in cider volume over the six months
leading to August 2008; shares in off trade fell from 8.3% to 7.5% and shares in bottled ciders for

profit on cider fell by a hefty 40% during the book year 2007/8 and 30% during the book year

How Does Pacino Present Shakespeare In Looking For Richard
Al Pacino s Looking for Richard presents a facet of cultural and academic critiques of performing
Shakespeare while striving to turn those preconceived presumptions on their head. Pacino shakes up
the script and provides an interesting conversation on the importance, influence, and approachability
of Shakespeare on a grand scale. In an important rehearsal scene at 41:26, Frederic Kimball exclaims
that actors truly are the possessions the possessors of a tradition, the proud inheritors of the
understanding of Shakespeare (Pacino, Looking for Richard). In this documentary, Pacino uses
method acting to mirror the challenges of producing Richard III to the play itself. At 41:26, the scene
is framed as a medium shot of Kimball, while the edge of the frame shows Pacino and Winona Ryder
at a close up. Ryder and Pacino are positioned sitting directly next to each other while Kimball is at a
distance. The camera is tilted down towards Kimball. This particular way of framing the scene
illustrates the relationship between their characters within the play and presents the process of making
the film. Pacino, as Richard, is the main focus and the central character in the play that is given the
most intimate insight to, which seemingly parallels Pacino s role in producing ... Show more content

At 41:42 the camera pans, zooms out, tracks partially behind Pacino. The frame then tilts downwards
as Pacino proceeds to knight Kimball PhD of the realm (Pacino, Looking for Richard). By knighting
Kimball, Pacino playfully dismisses his idea on the motives of Lady Anne. This also takes the viewer
back to an early part of the film when Pacino says to Kimball make me a king (Pacino, Looking for
Richard). This scene represents Pacino in the role of a king, both in terms of character and director of

  • 2. Artificial Intelligence. Essay Artificial Intelligence: Cognitive Ability or Information Processing Computers have become an integral part of our everyday lives. We rely upon these machines to perform innumerable tasks that we often take for granted. Most people realize that computers are able to perform the multitude of functions as a consequence of the programming they receive. These programs give computers a set of instructions that governs their transition from one information processing state to another. Thus, computational machines are able to respond to a certain set of inputs with a certain range of outputs. In order to comprehend programs one needs only to describe these instructions in functional terms. In this regard, computer programs are extremely similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Searle s opinion, computers can never be minds because they are inherently different from brains. He argues that brains do not merely instantiate a program but also cause mental events by virtue of specific neuro biological processes. Searle is essentially making the contention that brains, by virtue of their specific biochemical properties, cause minds. Consequently, according to Searle, any artifact that produced mental phenomena would have to be able to duplicate the specific causal powers of brains and it could not do that just by running a formal computer program. Although it is interesting to contemplate, Searle s argument definitely has its share of flaws. The Churchlands, as proponents in the possibility of artificial intelligence to duplicate the mind, (yet not believers of strong AI as it was previously defined ) do their best to illustrate these weaknesses in his theory. The primary objection which they have with Searle s argument against the plausibility of artificial intelligence lies with the third premise in his original proof. The Churchlands argue that this premise, which states, Syntax by itself is neither constitutive of nor sufficient for semantics, is an assumption rather than a fact. Additionally, they contend that to assume its truth is tantamount to begging the question against classical AI. Classical AI rests on the premise that if one can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Essay On Treasure Fleets My favorite scholarly pursuit to date is in a category of its own, combining most of the examples in the given prompt. It began roughly three years ago when I first read about the Spanish treasure fleets of the early 1700s in one of my history books. The subject was just barely brushed upon, but it was enough to spark my curiosity on the topic and I decided to look up more information. After reading several books and individual articles, I focused my intended research on a single fleet: the 1715 treasure fleet. Consisting of eleven ships, the 1715 fleet had been laden with gold, fine china, and other valuables. Spain was in desperate need of funds due to the War of Succession, so the large treasure fleet was not an uncommon sight. I cannot put enough emphasis on just how much this pursuit sharpened my research skills and expanded my interest in both the environment and history. One bit of information led to another, and I learned more from this research than I probably would have in a normal high school classroom setting. Many of the things I learned will actually apply directly to my major in environmental science as well, which makes all of that research even more valuable to me. • 5. Courbet’s “the Stone Breakers” Courbet (1819 1877) is a realistic painter, in that a majority of his work is about everyday scenes, often depicting peasants and working people in rural areas. Howerver, Courbet is also an artist who challenged the traditional painting in the middle of the 19th century. Courbet introduced a new kind of realism, which focused on a rugged depiction of nature and people rather than an idealized and artificial one. Most paintings of the time showed wealthy people, whereas Courbet who was politically involved in socialist causes, applied his political beliefs to art. (Alexander, 1965) Alexander writes that Courbet studied Renaissance and Baroque paintings from Northern Europe as well as from Italy, and that he liked to mix classical visual ideas with the straightforward symbolism of children s drawings and popular prints, and the mechanical realism of the still novel photography. (Alexander: 447) At the time he painted Stone Breakers he made another work called The Wrestlers which shows two very muscular, almost naked men, wrestling in a field. Their bulky shapes make them look almost like mythological heroes from Ancient Greece. The excavation of Assyrian sculpture at the time had a major influence on the look of the naked figures and the position of figures in Courbet s work. These findings also relate to the 5 Dysfunctions of a Team that are outlined by Patrick Lencioni. With such clear goals to reach, teams or individuals can create amazing results. Tournaments create these results, because it focuses on the results and not the process. It spreads teams across the company, or even the globe, making independent decisions from one another, and the teams do not share their methods only the results. By not having every team deliberate with one another, each individual team is able to come up with their solution and present it without having to get a group to agree with them. With tournaments, cascades and polarization is not an issue, but information can still be shared. Another way to avoid issues within deliberating groups is through averages. Taking a statistical average response or answer is better than a group deliberating on an issue. It takes the emotions and flaws that comes from being human out of the equation and just focuses on logic. In most groups taking the average might be the best way to go. When responses are taken without deliberation, but statistics people are more inclined to vote based on what they know, and not on the feelings or views of others. Hitler took advantage of situations such as the Great Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of Germany. Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members of Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by rewarding the people of Germany with organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through joy. The Great Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the Hyperinflation of 1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many Germans encountered unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price declines of commodities and also the declining of markets. With many Germans facing unemployment this meant they were not able to earn money so it was difficult to get food or other necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the opportunity to reach out to the people of Germany who were outraged and worried about their future. So, this economic tragedy brought new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them to gain more popularity. With more support and popularity, the Nazi Party kept on growing and becoming more powerful. In January 1933 Hitler was designated as Chancellor. He did not have much power at the beginning of ... That worldview is not only the lens through which one views the world, but the expression through which the world shapes how one views the world. In a way, worldview colors what we see in the world, all the while those same things are shaping that very same worldview into something new and different. Ultimately, where our hope lies always remains central to worldview. This is especially true in our view of the physical dimension. How one views the material world and human bodies in relation to human souls and the afterlife is fundamental to one s worldview. Plato, the Late Classical Greek philosopher, and Saint Augustine, the Catholic Bishop of the North African city of Hippo, both made their views on the material world and human bodies clear in their writings and dialogues. While Plato s hope rested in an ethereal bodiless existence, Augustine hoped in the redemption and reconciliation of the body through Christ. Plato made the source of his hope abundantly clear in his dialogue, Phaedo, There is good hope that on arriving where I am going, if anywhere, I shall acquire what has been our chief preoccupation in our past life (Phaedo, 67b c). If for some reason one of these items are not available it may affect production of the item. Because of this, supplies depend heavily on their outside sources and have a huge impact on the production of the product. There is a high level of competition amongst suppliers which aids in reducing the prices to producers. Reducing the prices to producers also reduces the price to consumers. There are many suppliers in this market which allows multiple firms to prosper without stealing market from another business. They disputed eleven publications that were considered offensive for having content the school named anti Semitic, anti Christian, anti American, and filthy (Legal Information Institute). In his ruling, Justice Brennan stated that students had the right to read whatever they wanted because joining a school did not amount to a legal curtailment of their constitutional rights. Justice Blackmun concurred with Brennan s sentiments stating that it would be a curtailment of the First Amendment if school administrators were allowed to pull off books from libraries simply because they were opposed to the ideas in them. Some of the more recent publications that are censored in the United States include Dav Pilkey s Captain Underpants, Looking for Alaska by John Green, The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison, and E. L. Bain agreed that people s abilities can improve as people understand and learn how their minds work. It is unbelievable that one can be a prisoner of their own thoughts; according to Bain, this is because we have not known anything else. • 28. Theories Of Personality And Leadership Assessments Essay Introduction There are multiple theories of personality and leadership assessments that have proven effective in helping individuals achieve their full career potential. The Big Five theory of personality, for example, measures the five broad areas of personality, including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (Srivastava, 2015). Other types of assessments, such as the more simple leadership assessment we explored, simply measure leadership qualities, such as emotional intelligence and confidence. In exploring a couple of such resources in more depth, such as the leadership assessment provided by the University of Kent s Career Enhancement Center, as well as the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator, it is clear that understanding more about oneself can lead to enhanced career choices. Based on the work of Carl Jung, Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs developed the Myers Briggs Personality Type Indicator, a self inventory geared toward helping individuals determine their personality types and individual areas of strength. By helping people understand themselves, Myers and Briggs believed that they could help people select occupations that were best suited to their personality types and lead healthier, happier lives (Cherry, 2015). • 35. Colonialism And Poverty The foremost cause of global poverty is colonialism. After Christopher Columbus discovered the new world in 1492, Europeans invaded the Americas, Africa, and East Asia. Today, these places are some of the most affected by poverty. The poverty persists because the peoples of these places were killed and enslaved. Their land, natural resources, and way of life were stolen by the colonizers. The colonizers forced the colonies to shift from subsistence farming to cash crops, obliterating the natural economy. Since they only grew cash crops, they were forced to buy European goods. The economy of the colonies became locked and they became completely dependent on the colonizing country. Soon, the colonies found themselves in debt to their colonizers. What little money these colonies were able to make went to repay the debt, instead of going toward the development of the colony. Additionally, since they were indebted to them, their colonizers had control over their economy. The creditors took full advantage of this and forced the colonies to adopt neoliberalism and privatize companies and resources, which plunged even more people into absolute poverty. Even when many of these colonies became their own independent countries, the documentary mentioned that the debt was transferred over to the new country, even though this was a violation of international law. • 48. Who Is Joseph Conrad Uncivilized Through contemplation of Joseph Conrad s complex descriptions and ideas of life in Africa, or the heart of darkness, it can be established that he is, in fact, not racist. Conrad was simply expressing the dark, uncivilized manners of the African people to contrast the light European hoi polloi and the unfair dehumanization of slaves in his time period. The African people that Conrad viewed as uncivilized could be considered an act of racism; however, it is also logical to believe that he was merely trying to demonstrate the common, effete opinion among Europeans of this time frame. This would also explain Conrad s complex framed narrative as he didn t want to be viewed as racist. His framed narrative could demonstrate the confusion he had ... He was not racist, but it could be concluded that Conrad was generally not a fan of humanity; It was very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you, luminous and terrifying like a flash of lightning in a serene sky: Exterminate all the brutes! (Conrad 407). At the surface, this quote seems to be a cry for the brutes or Africans to be destroyed, yet it could also be assumed that Conrad is absolutely tired of the darkness of mankind in general. Ellie Arielle addresses this quotation, as well, by saying; Although Kurtz is implying that the people and the situation in the Congo are in need of some considerable control and that the only solution he sees is extermination, what Marlow realizes is that humanity is not the cause of the problem and that the Africans are not the heart of darkness, but that greed and lust for economic freedom is. (Arielle) The topic of economic freedom appears frequently throughout the novella especially with the arrival of the ribald Eldorado Exploring Expedition. It is clear that the European men are oblivious to their surroundings and only interested in money and this is another way for Conrad to show how humanity has let him down. One critic explains that Heart of Darkness offers an, analysis ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. How Does Pacino Present Shakespeare In Looking For Richard Al Pacino s Looking for Richard presents a facet of cultural and academic critiques of performing Shakespeare while striving to turn those preconceived presumptions on their head. Pacino shakes up the script and provides an interesting conversation on the importance, influence, and approachability of Shakespeare on a grand scale. In an important rehearsal scene at 41:26, Frederic Kimball exclaims that actors truly are the possessions the possessors of a tradition, the proud inheritors of the understanding of Shakespeare (Pacino, Looking for Richard). In this documentary, Pacino uses method acting to mirror the challenges of producing Richard III to the play itself. At 41:26, the scene is framed as a medium shot of Kimball, while the edge of the frame shows Pacino and Winona Ryder at a close up. Ryder and Pacino are positioned sitting directly next to each other while Kimball is at a distance. The camera is tilted down towards Kimball. This particular way of framing the scene illustrates the relationship between their characters within the play and presents the process of making the film.
