Argumentative Essay On Wicca
To understand the great right, you first have to understand that Wicca is a fertility religion. The
founder of Wicca Gerald Gardner explains Wicca as a very ancient ritualistic religion based on
survival. This rite is more closely based on the ritual of Beltane. During the Beltane rites the high
priest or priestess will enact the fertility rite by inserting the athame (which represents the horned god)
into the chalice (which represents the mother goddess). This is a form of sympathetic magick where
we enact a bigger picture with our own ritual tools. Before i did the research i honestly thought the
great rite had Something to do with sex. While it does indeed have to do with sex its much more about
fertility. I now know that the great rite has everything to do with praying to the gods through ritual.
Praying for fertility to the earth, animals and plants. Author Vivianne Crowley says in Wicca: The Old
Religion in the New Age, The outer rite involves a linking of the male and the female; the sacred
marriage is outwardly a marriage of two people, but inwardly it is a marriage of the two within one
person. The Great Rite is more than just a sexual union; it is the enactment of the creation of the
universe itself in the Wiccan tradition. In modern Wicca, many practioners can and will use sex in
ritual but this is more often than not used in personal practice. When a man and woman are both
practices of the faith and perform rituals together this is an acceptable way to end the

My Personal Favorite Chain Of Hotels
I choose to focus on Marriott International Hotels. This has always been my personal favorite chain of
hotels to stay at. Marriott is a leading hospitality company with revenues of nearly $13 billion a year, a
fortune 500 company, and over 4,000 properties in 78 countries. They have a majority of their
properties in the United States and Europe, but also have properties in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada,
Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Middle East, and South America. I will discuss this company s
strategic plan, policies and procedures, vision, and more.
First off, it all began with a root beer stand. John and Alice Marriott decided to open a root beer stand
in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1927. After this was such a success, they decided to expand and
open restaurants in 1953. Then, in 1957 they opened their first motel in Arlington, VA. Eventually,
their son Bill Marriott took over the family business and made the company one of the world s leading
hospitality companies. The Marriott offers a variety of services to their customers. They have certain
rewards programs to save you money, complimentary breakfast at some of the hotels, great customer
service. They also book events, like social events, wedding receptions, meetings, etc.
The Marriott says they do not have a mission statement. They said they have a vision statement
instead, which is to be the #1 hospitality company in the world. They value putting people first,
pursuing excellence,

Human Interaction with Nature in the Works of Aldo...
Human Interaction with Nature in the Works of Aldo Leopold and Elizabeth Bishop
The poet Elizabeth Bishop and the naturalist Aldo Leopold share a keen power of observation, a
beautifully detailed manner of writing, a love for the beauty of nature, and an interest in how people
interact with the natural world. Like Leopold, Bishop examines human interactions with nature on
both the personal and the ecological level. On the individual level, a hunter s contact with the animal
he or she is hunting changes his or her attitude toward nature in both Bishop s poem The Fish and
Leopold s essay Thinking Like a Mountain. On the larger level, both Bishop in her poem The
Mountain and Leopold throughout the Sand County Almanac envision the ... Show more content on

For both narrators, this lack of emotional connection changes when they notice some striking detail
about the wolf or fish which awakens them to the symbolic value of the animal and transforms their
way of relating to nature. Leopold sees a fierce green fire dying (130) in the eyes of the wolf and
senses that his neat equation of fewer wolves equals more deer is inadequate, and that wolves have an
importance unknown to him. He goes on to develop a new conservation ethic, one that values wolves
as well as deer and protects wild animals for their own sake and that of the ecosystem, not just for the
pleasure of hunters. Bishop s speaker notices five fishhooks dangling from the fish s mouth and
realizes how many times the fish has battled for its life and won. Its fighting spirit earns her respect
and causes her to release the fish.
The particular symbolic value that each writer finds in the wild animal is evident in his or her
beautifully poetic descriptions of the animal. Each admires the animal for its undaunted courage in the
face of a harsh existence. Bishop repeatedly uses words and images which personify the fish as a wise
old warrior: the fish is battered and venerable

Ethical Financial Reporting And Disclosure Quality
Article #8
Abstract. The article reviewed was Director Overlap, Ethical Financial Reporting, and Improvements
in Disclosure Quality. The key of the abstract is to emphasize the positive influence of independent
audit committee on the ethical financial reporting, corporate disclosure, and company ethical
environment overall (p. 183).
Introduction. The author studies the relationships between the director overlap and financial reporting
quality, and for that purpose, analyzes the compensation measurement system and how it tights to
performance (p. 183). The researcher also focuses on the impact of audit committee on the reporting
and disclosure. The main objective of the research is to examine the impact of director overlap on
earnings, compensation of executives and independence of the audit committee on financial
performance, ethical financial reporting, and disclosure. The importance of the study lies in analysis of
the control issues, equity based measures, interests of shareholders, managers ability to prevent fraud,
independent financial experts, ethics requirement for reporting, and SEC ethics rule. The author
considers two problems: how the level or degree of audit committee independence affect the quality of
financial reporting; and the relationship between cash incentives and compensation (p. 184).
Literature Review. The author uses a systematic review of literature in the research. The literature
review is categorized into two parts: study the relationships

Deception, Lying, And Other Cases
In Element 1, I will present some cases where deception is thought to be lying, and other cases where
deception is not thought to be lying. I will contend that, when deception is lying, it is immoral and I
will give reasons for why this is the case. After my presentation, I will take a look at some possible
criticisms of my arguments and then answer those criticisms. Then, I will present my conclusions.
In Element 2, I will contend that people for whatever reason choose to lie about things in order to
persuade others into thinking that the truth is on their side. Lying takes a group of actions or words
that are clearly false to the perpetrator to try to bait someone into thinking that it is truthful. When
deceptions are thought to be lies, it can be a very eerie situation because the person that was lied to did
not get complete or enough adequate information of what was told. Yes, what someone said may have
been truthful, but not all of the information was being told. The person receiving the information is
left without additional pieces to the story although he or she does not know this, which makes the
person assume that what you said was the end all be all to the situation. These situations can likely
equate to being a lie because of the information that was omitted. Once the person finds out that pieces
of information was left out or incomplete, they will feel like they were lied to. Because the rest of the
information or story was not fulfilled, the person can also be

Genocide In Cambodia Essay
Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia which is about half the size of California and was ruled by
the French until the Japanese could win the war. Cambodia borders the Gulf of Thailand,
Thailand,Vietnam and Laos. Japan on the other hand surrendered the war so then the French took over
in 1945. This time around the French allowed the Cambodians to have political parties and a
constitution. Then in 1949 Cambodia was semi independent according to a treaty. The French finally
gave Cambodia their independence on November 9, 1953. King Sihanouk formed his own political
movement in favor of his father from 1955 1970 then when his father died he named his movement
the Buddhist Socialist which was not really socialist at all. In 1968 is when the ... Show more content

Khmer Rouge s interpretation of Leninist/Marxist/Maoist communist model made them believe that
they could mold a classless society by eliminating all the social classes apart from peasants who are
poor. The elimination led to annihilation of all careers marked by the intellectuals and religion. The
many groups included teachers, lawyers, doctors and any religious figures. About more than 500,000
people died in the killing fields and more than a million died from starvation due to only eating 200
calories of rice each day. Those that complained about their labor or tasks were tortured in a detention

Greek Military Discipline In Ancient Rome
Gateway Project Marcus Beatty The Greeks and Romans both had an excellent military, but Rome s
Military had much better discipline than the Greeks. The fact that the Romans had excellent discipline
compared to the Greeks, along with greater numbers, helped the Romans to eventually take over
Greece. This paper will compare the Military Discipline, awards, and strategy of two of the most well
known civilizations in human history. Rome is popular with their military s punishments, awards, and
a small amount of their strategy. Then I will offer a brief paragraph on their strategy. It is well known
that Rome was one of the greatest empires in world history. In the beginning of Rome, the discipline
was much more strict than later in the Imperial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romans mostly used their own adapted version of the Greek phalanx(more on that in Greek Strategy).
They often employed warriors from lands they had conquered to do jobs they could not, like Archers
from carthage or cavalry troops. It is often thought that Rome conquered with nothing other than
military power, but this is false. They conquered the whole italian peninsula with, not only force, but
also with diplomatic skill. Now we will discuss Greek Military Strategy and Discipline. Greek
Military Strategy, as I mentioned in Roman strategy, was much easier to research and will be longer.
But, Greek Discipline was more difficult to find. Greek Military Discipline was basic, at the least.
More so in early times because most of the fighting was done by heroes. After Greece entered the dark
ages, it changed to warfare fought by armies from the city states. The Greek armies were obviously
disciplined enough to obey their commanders, but the Greek s Military Discipline was nothing
compared to Rome s. Greek Strategy is a much deeper subject than Roman Strategy. To start off Greek
Strategy, we will discuss naval Tactics. The Greeks used Triremes with Bronze battering rams
mounted on the front to ram other ships. Each ship had a small force of warriors and archers, but the
main tactic in naval warfare was ramming, not

Urban Water Supply and Demand
1 INTRODUCTION Water availability critically influences human well being and directly affects
ecosystems and the environment. Water supply and demand issues are especially more complicated in
areas of rapid urban and population growth. Projections say that 46 to 52 countries and a total
population of 3 billion people will be water stressed by 2025 (Rosegrant, 1997). And to increase a
little bit more the complexity, there is the fact that water availability is not homogeneous. Water is
irregularly distributed and, consequently, water problems are region specific. Water supply and
demand problems usually fall into the wicked problem category. Their complexity is based on the fact
that they have many interdependencies, are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Groundwater supplies and surface water supplies outside of the local catchment area are commonly
used when the local surface water supply is insufficient. Increasing levels of groundwater exploitation
can significantly decrease groundwater levels, leading to several environmental problems. An example
is what s been occurring in the North China Plain, where the mean depth to water changed from 7.23
m in 1983 to 11.52 m in 1993, characterizing a decrease of approximately 0.5 m per year (Changming
et al, 2001). Groundwater table drops at those rates can severely impact the environment.
Groundwater depletion can lead to the formation of depression cones, which can often cause land
subsidence. Water level drops in coastal areas result in intrusion of seawater, deteriorating the water
quality. And, in urban centres and surroundings, water resources are threatened by untreated urban and
industrial wastewater discharge. The increasing demand for water resources can severely affect natural
ecosystems. For the construction of a dam, a large area is going to end up under water, severely
impacting terrestrial ecosystems. Overexploitation of water for irrigation can seriously affect aquatic
ecosystems. An example of that is what happened in the Klamath River (Oregon, USA): more than
30,000 salmon perished because farmers were allowed to withdraw unsustainable

Distrigas Corporation
Q1. As per the provided information the Gas Utility companies pays a base commodity charge of
$.3359 plus a peak usage demand of charge that is $4.63 per Mcf multiplied by the total demand
during the maximum take day in the last 12 months which is 240 in this case. The cost per MCF can
be derived by the below formula
(Commodity Base Charge * Total Demand) + (Peak Usage Demand Charge* High Peak in 1 day*
months in year)
This will translate into
($ 0.3359*30,700,000 Mcf)+ ($ 4.63*240*12) = $ 23,646,530
By substituting the appropriate values in the formula we arrive at a cost of $ 23,646,530. This cost is
then divided by the total demand over 12 months of 30.7 Bcf or 30,700,000 Mcf to arrive at an
average cost per Mcf of $ 0.7702 which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the proposal A for Distrigas would cost only $29,376,000, or savings of $252,140. The
annual cost of Distrigas policy is $21,172,397.19.
Distrigas strategy should be to maximize on its competitive rate and endeavor itself as a cost leader,
promising speed delivery, reliability and meeting the right quantity when needed the most, all at most
cost efficient rate possible. To be cost efficient it needs to operate economically such as storing the
right amount of gas needed. It has to improve on its storage and deliver the gas in the best cost
efficient using the right mode of transportation possible. The biggest threat could be when consumers
like Boston Gas decide to build their own storage facilities and therefore start sourcing directly from
the pipeline gas providers, to be stored for usage during peak season.
Q4. Proposal A: Slow Build up Strategy In this proposal infrastructure will be built and machinery and
trucks purchased to allow Distrigas to slowly build up inventories at the customer location. This
strategy includes building a satellite tank which will serve as a reserve for the gas that is brought in by
Alozean. It takes 250 days to build up inventories to satisfy peak demand. This model requires 6
trucks to carry the gas over the 250 day period. Field tanks will need to be built at the customer
location in order to hold the gas that will service the peak demand and this will cost $

The Evolution Of Social Classes In The Time Machine By H....
In H.G. Wells novel The Time Machine, the protagonist is an English scientist, referred to as the Time
Traveller throughout the novel. He designs a small time machine and time travels to the year 802,701,
where he loses his time machine. He discovers two life forms: the Morlock and Eloi. He quickly forms
his beliefs and theories on their people and the evolution of them. These theories reflect those from
Charles Darwin s Origins of the Species, where Darwin discussed natural selection and evolution. The
repressed working class had evolved into the brutal, nocturnal Morlocks, while the leisured classes
evolved into the beautiful, yet purposeless Eloi. The Time Traveller grows to realize that civilization s
advancements weakened the Eloi, making ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the Time Traveller theorizes, the working class has been pushed underground for so long that it has
evolved into a distinct, nocturnal species, while the upper class has been above ground, spoiled with
amenities that make them weak and dependent. The Morlock s experience being underground has
strengthened and taught them how to keep themselves alive. For example, when they ran out of food,
they discovered that they could hunt the Eloi. The Time traveler finds that the Morlocks actually tend
to Eloi as if they were farm animals, with the obvious intention to use them as food. The Morlock
adapt to environment very well. This is yet another example of natural selection, that being as the
favorable traits are with the Morlocks, they are most capable of surviving, thriving and maintaining

Atrial Septal Defect Case Study
Atrial septal defect(ASD) is a common congenital heart disease with a female to male ratio of
approximately 2:1.The most common type of Atrial Septal Defect is a secundum defect which is
characterized by a defect in the inter atrial septum which allows pulmonary venous return from the left
atrium to pass directly to the right atrium. Normally the patients with Atrial Septal Defect remain
asymptomatic up to third or fourth decade of life and in the middle age some clinical symptoms can be
observed. A shunt is the presence of a net flow of blood through the defect, either from left to right or
right to left. The amount of shunting actually determines the hemodynamic significance of the ASD. A

Doppler imaging and echo PIV cannot measure the velocity in a direction perpendicular to the beam,
but Vector Flow Mapping (VFM) allows the calculation of velocities perpendicular to the direction of
the beam without angle dependency with the use of the continuity equation and speckle tracking
echocardiography[14]. This energy loss is assumed to become a new indicator of cardiac function[15].
So, it is considered an effective index to monitor the blood flow efficiency within the heart chambers
under various pathological conditions. Blood is viscous in nature and generates frictional heat due to
viscosity at the site where turbulent flows occur[16]. In case of Atrial Septal Defect blood flows
through the hole across the atrial chambers and creates a turbulence in the atrial as well as ventricle
chambers during early diastole, ventricular systole and atrial contraction, which probably ensue an
increased intra cardiac Energy Loss.
Therefore, the aim of this study was to use the new technique of Vector Flow Mapping (VFM) to
measure the reference values of intra cardiac energy loss in ASD patients pre and post occlusion

Female Infanticide and Foeticide Essay
Female Infanticide and Foeticide
It is regrettable that female infanticide and foeticide are rapidly decreasing the female population
throughout India. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female
infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across
all casts groups.
The low status of women and girls is due to cultural beliefs and the material cost they represent to
their families. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says that there is a belief regarding the nature of men and women:
Men are ritually pure, physically strong, and emotionally mature; women, on the other hand, are
ritually pollutable, physically weak, and lack strong willpower (30). Because of these ... Show more

Overall, girls get poorer education than boys, and become less aware of the world around them.
Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son.
The preference for male children is due to three major reasons. One is the economic value of having
sons. Sons are more likely than daughters to provide family labour on the farm or in a family business,
earn wages, and support their parents during old age. Upon marriage, a son brings a daughter in law
into his family, and she provides additional help around the house as well as she brings riches in the
form of dowry payments. Another important advantage of having sons is their social cultural utility. In
India patriarchal family system, having one son is essential for the continuation of the family line, and
many sons provide high status to the family. Vanaja Dhruvarajan says, When a women becomes a
mother, especially the mother of a son, her status goes up in her new home for having helped
perpetuate the family (87) Finally, the utility of having sons comes from the important religious
functions that only sons can provide. In Hindu tradition, sons are needed to do the funeral of their
deceased parents and to help in the salvation of their souls.
Daughters are considered to be an economic problem to her parents mainly because of the heavy
dowry payment demanded by the groom s family, as well as the high cost of the wedding,

Research Paper On Latin American Independence
The Independence of Latin America
The Independence of Latin America was a process caused by years of injustices, discriminations, and
abuse, from the Spanish Crown upon the inhabitants of Latin America. Since the beginning the
Spanish Crown used the Americas as a way to gain riches and become greater in power
internationally. Three of the distinct causes leading Latin America to seek independence from Spain,
were that Spain was restricting Latin America from financial growth, (this included restrictions from
the Spain on international trade, tax burden, and laws which only allowed the Americas to buy from

great abuse fell through. Nonetheless, the Indians of New Spain (and elsewhere) enjoyed a set of legal
privileges, exemptions, and protection which significantly interferes with their complete integration
into colonial society, and kept them in a legal bubble of tutelage ruptured only with the advent of
independent Mexican nationhood in the third decade of the nineteenth century (Van Young, 154). The
point here is that where these and other legal and administrative remedies were applied in favor of the
Indians of colonial New Spain, they were applied in the kings name. Furthermore, religious and civic
ritual of all kinds constantly stressed the centrality of the Spanish king to the colonial commonwealth,
and his benevolence and fatherly concern with the welfare of his weakest subjects (Van Young 155).

Children s Eating Habits Are Not Consistent With...
Gardening can range from fruit orchards to residential yards to fields with rows of crops. It involves a
very active participation in the growing of plants and includes labor intensive activities. Gardening
can be considered a relaxing activity for many individuals. Many classrooms and parents have taken
to teaching their children the skills of gardening at a young age. Involving children in the process of
growing their own food improves their fitness, causes them to eat healthier, makes them feel pride in
growing something, gives them a sense of self reliance and instills in them skills and values that

The program lets children grow their own food which creates interest in eating what they grow and
instills in them the values that children can learn from growing food and cooking it From Water s
experience, when a child has been involved in the whole process of growing they take pride in it when
it is ripe and are more likely to eat the crops they produced. In an interview Water stated, When kids
grow food and cook it and serve it, they want to eat it. All of the very important ideas about
sustainability and nutrition come in by osmosis. They re engaged with all of their senses. Once they ve
spent a year in the program, they know where the compost heap is, they know what compost is, they
know when the raspberries are ripe, they know how to plant seeds. (Broache, p. 50). Water witnessed
firsthand the benefits of gardening through observing the children who participated in her program.

Ronald Reagan s Foreign Policy
Ronald Reagan was an actor and cowboy that must of the world didn t take serious at first! But once
he took the oath of office; he would get the world s attention. He enters into office with the United
States in an economic and military mess. He would fix the economic mess by cutting taxes and jump
starting the economy. The military would be fixed by his Doctrine. The Reagan Doctrine was an
aggressive foreign policy from 1981 87 in his first term as President he designed a plan to roll back
Communism at its weakest points, and weaken the U.S.S.R by targeting the overthrow of its marginal
allies in the non industrialized World. Many pundits argue that it was a smashing success and
dramatically undermined the power of the U.S.S.R, forcing it to retreat, and collapse by 1989. Reagan
s foreign policy could be stated by his view of the U.S.S.R as the Evil Empire that is an illegitimate
state. He rejected the détente policy that Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter had pursued
until 1979, when the U.S.S.R invaded Afghanistan proved its failure. Reagan long had opposed the
containment strategy. Reagan instead proposed Rollback, a strategy to steadily reduce and eventually
eliminate the Communist threat. In 1981 the newly elected Reagan rejected Henry Kissinger and other
advocates of détente and brought in hard liners, many of them previously associated with Democratic
Senator Henry Jackson. The Reagan Doctrine in fact operated as early as 1981, without a name, but

Examples Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel
Death, murder, bloody horror! The death of many can destroy the minds of millions, just imagine what
the death of millions can do to one s mind and soul. The Holocaust was a horrific event, changing
people s hearts and even their relationships with god after millions were forced to watch others die, be
burned, and starved. This event of this mass murder is a great example of how man can be so
inhumane to one another and how those events can have a great effect on someone s faith.
Throughout the story Night, we followed Ellie throughout his experience in the holocaust. On many
occasions others were forced to watch other Jewish be killed. The first sign of this which caused loss
of faith was Moishe the Beadle, who was a very religious man, after ... Show more content on

Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled. Because He caused thousands of
children to burn in His mass graves? Because he kept six crematoria working day and night, including
Sabbath and the Holy Days? Because His great might, He had created Auschwitz, Birkenau, Buna, and
so many other factories of death. (Wiesel 67). This example shows how Elie is losing his faith. Wiesel
does not understand how if God, The Almighty , was real with the greatest power how he could allow
the burning and killing of so many innocent people and if He was then Elie would no longer want to
praise someone of that much cruelty. Later Wiesel gives a greater example of how he loses his faith in
god. And I, the former mystic, was thinking: Yes, man is stronger, Greater than God. When Adam and
Eve deceived You, You chased them from paradise, when You displeased by Noah s generation, You
brought down the flood... But look at these men whom You have betrayed, allowing them to be
tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? They pray before you! (Wiesel 68). This
continues to show that Elie is extremely confused how God could turn his back on them when they
worship him and didn t do anything to get this type of torture such as

Triangulum Galaxy Essay
According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to classify an object as a planet it must have
three qualities. One it must orbit a Sun or Star of some kind. Second it must big enough for gravity to
compress it into a big round ball. And lastly it must be big enough to pull neighboring objects into the
planet itself or sling shot them around the planet and shoot them off into outer space. The place for my
planet is in the Triangulum Galaxy. The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy about 2.7 million light
years (25761569076837520000km)away from Earth. The solar mass of the Triangulum Galaxy is 50
billion Mʘ (standard unit of mass in Astronomy). This galaxy has about 40 billion stars which is 1/5th
of how many there are in the Milky Way Galaxy. And 1/25th s of the Andromeda Galaxy. The name of
my planet is Frigusodayin (Cold Air)(Latin, Armenian). The first rule of classifying a planet states that
it must orbit a Sun or Star. The Sun my planet will orbit is called WASP 56. Some properties of WASP
56 are that this star has an apparent magnitude of 11.48. Apparent magnitude is the brightness of an
object as seen from Earth. The higher the apparent magnitude the brighter it is (Our Sun s is 26.7).
This star is a G6 star which is part of the G Type main sequence star group. The G Type main
sequence star is a main sequence star of spectral type G and luminosity level V. These types of stars

Invitation To A Dialogue A Challenge To America
Since the beginning of minimum wage during the Great Depression, the discussion of the how much
minimum wage should be has always been occurring. Currently there is a strong push for the
minimum wage to be raised, especially as Americans compare the current American rate to other
countries rates. The New York Times recently reported that unionized Danish fast food workers are
paid more than twice as much as the average fast food worker in America, and the Danish workers
also receive benefits and paid vacation (Salz par. 2). Salz in his article, Invitation to a Dialogue: A
Challenge to America, begs America to change its minimum wage rate so as to better take care of
Americans. What Salz fails to take into account is the context of the comparison of rates along with
the purpose of minimum wage when it was created, the effects of raising the minimum wage, and
looking at the costs involved. In Salz s article he compares the pay of Danish workers to American
workers. This is two different contexts which must be taken into account. One cannot merely compare
the dollar amount of pay when the cost of living, workers skill level, and taxes must be taken into
consideration. The cost of living is much higher in Europe, for example, than in America. Also, the
Danish workers are unionized compared to non unionized, fast food workers in America, which begs
the question of what are union costs and what is involved with being in a union. In Salz s article, he

Music In Ancient Greek Music
Music in Ancient Greece was well integrated in their society, it played a large role in various
ceremonies from marriages to funerals, as well as entertainment like plays or epic poetry. Although it
is believed that music was invented in Africa over 55,000 years ago, music really began and took
shape in Ancient Greece. Even the word music came from the Greek word muses who were believed
to be the daughters of Zeus and were the patron Goddesses of creativity. There are many references to
music in ancient Greece, from drawings on pottery of people playing, as well as literary works that
even describe how the instruments sounded. Speaking of instruments, in addition to the voice being
used as one, there are several instruments that are known to have existed in Ancient Greece, a few
different string instruments including a lyre, a kithara (which is believed to be the ancient equivalent
of a guitar), and a barbitos, which is a taller version of a lyre. They also had several wind type
instruments including and aulos, pan pipes, a hydraulis (which eventually led to the modern day
organ), as well as a salpinx, which was an ancient type of trumpet with a bone mouthpiece that was
the origin of the many brass instruments that we know of today. Finally, we also know of several
percussion instruments that were used by the ancient Greeks, these include a tympanum, which was
like a tambourine, a crotala, and a koudounia. Music was actually one of the main teachings, along

Traditional Health Care Costs In The United States
Health care costs in the US have been an area of significant concern over the last decade. In 2013 total
spending on health care was $2.9 trillion and consumed 42% of federal revenues. Despite the high
cost of care, America s health seems to pale in comparison to other developed countries. Blame is
often assigned to poor health policy, an aging and overweight population, and inefficient systems that
involve unnecessary testing and extended hospital stays. While all of these factors undoubtedly play a
role, perhaps it is the very foundations and methodologies of western medicine that are causing the
uncontrollable climb of health care costs.

Narrative Essay On Cardiac Arrest
60% Rough Draft Late in the fall of my sixteenth year, my heart stopped functioning and I went into
cardiac arrest. One might think that a medical phenomenon like this is next to inconceivable, but
despite the improbable conditions, I was part of the 0.1%.
I was born with a rare heart condition called dextrocardia, also known as situs inversus. My heart and
all of my other organs are mirrored on the opposite side of my body, so instead of having my heart on
the left side of the body like the other 99.9% of the human population, it s positioned on the right side.
Because of this, I ve had health problems all my life. And with health problems comes financial
problems.
My father left us when he found out how much money his three year old daughter was costing him

Foundations have to be laid before a person can go out alone. A baby cannot be potty trained before
they even know how to walk. A child cannot ride a bike without first learning with training wheels and

With the influence of alcohol and the pressures of others it could lead to more teen pregnancy which
might lead to more abortions or even more children with broken homes and abuse. The rate of suicide
will only go up because people will become depressed by the shame of the things they did while under
the influence. Teens are flaky and most are not consistent on what they want to do with their lives.
They are still discovering who they are and who they want to be. If they drink, it could ruin their
whole future in one way or another. Teenagers should not be allowed to drink for they are not
experienced with driving and do not know how alcohol will affect them. Some say that since Europe
has a low drinking age, the U.S. should follow but the difference between the U.S. and European
drinking laws are that Europeans have a higher age for when teens can drive. Teens may be allowed to
drink at 14, 15, or even 16 but they are not allowed to get their license until they are 18, teens in
America can get their license at 16. If the drinking age was lowered to 18 that gives them only two
years experience driving and so they are not aware of what alcohol can do to their systems. American
teens are thus much more likely to drive under the influence of alcohol if the drinking age were
lowered (ProCon, 2008). States such as Massachusetts, Michigan, and Maine that have lowered that
drinking age had an increase in alcohol related collisions among the 18 to

Television And Its Impact On The Production Of American...
Few facets of culture and media have fostered a greater impact on the production of American
identities than the television. Since its inception, television has played a crucial role in shaping,
forming, and producing a distinctly American national imagery of acceptable normalcy, especially in
regards to African Americans and their shifting television portrayals. In addition, Herman S. Gray
argues in his article Television and the Politics of Difference that the creation and delineation of
difference is an essential aspect of television, and that this production of difference is perhaps most
visible in the characterizations and representations of African Americans on television due to a
product and capitalism based business model. The early years of television were notable for their lack
of black representation. Television was primarily prioritized for the baby boom families and their
entertainment needs, so the appearance of black stars was rare. When an African American superstar
did appear as a guest on nightly programming, it was an exciting event for people of color.
Subsequently, exemplifications became a source of pride in black communities and families.
Television portrayals of African American characters express an intersection of social, cultural,
political, and economic dimensions in everyday life. Ideas spread through the propagation of
television promoted American ideals, but to emphasize ideals television also determined what

LATIN AMERICAN DEBT CRISIS, THE SOLUTIONS AND ITS RESULTS.

from 34% to 26% of the developed countries average. Development countries were giving loans to
Latin American countries to enable them to straighten their economies. However, they have had
difficulty repaying their debt. Latin American borrowing from US commercial banks and other
creditors increased dramatically during the 1970s. At the end of 1970, total outstanding debt was only

Secretary Baker underlined the importance of foreign and equity investment as non debt creating. This
can have a compounding effect on growth by bringing innovation and technology and help to keep the
capital domestic. The plan proposed the private banks and institutions to keep lending to the indebted
countries. The banks could provide new loan of $20 billion over a three years period and the World
bank and the Inter American Development Bank could contribute an additional $9 billion. The Baker
plan called for an annual increase of around 2.5% in commercial lending but the bankers were uneasy
with this request because the plan was reliant on continuing accumulating debt to finance growth.
Without strong assurances on the new loans, it would be very difficult to increase international
spending. The Baker plan had mixes results. The plan was efficient towards the 15 largest debtors and
it neglected the needs of smaller countries. A few of the worst indebted countries had made progress in
adjusting their external sector during 1986 1988 and the threat to the international banking system has

Concept Of Ecosystem Services And Practice Of Conservation
GG3057
What does the concept of ecosystem services add to the theory and practice of conservation?
If we are managing ecosystems, then in theory, we need to also be managing people, essentially
speaking, if we develop management tools that are effective and equitable and also meet the needs of
people, then we really need to understand how people use and interact with their environments, how
they value and prioritise those interactions and why. So the Millennium Ecosystems Assessment
(2005) defines ecosystem services as the benefits people obtain from ecosystems themselves. These
are categorised into three separate categories: Provisioning, these are the sort of the goods that nature
provided us such as fresh water, food and timber. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The chart above focuses on the three categories: provision, regulating and cultural services.
Essentially speaking, 15 out of the 24 ecosystem services assessed belong in the degraded category,
most of them in the regulating category, with the second most in the provisioning. When looking
towards the mixed results category, it means they have increased in some part of the world and
decreased in others, therefore mixed. Finally, the last four services were enhanced. Note that three of
these are actually services that have a value in the marketplace. Often our interventions in ecosystems
are about optimising or maximising those services with value in the marketplace, but sometimes at the
expense of these other services. So when focusing on the ecosystem services, we must ask ourselves,
how can their value be incorporated in decisions?
Human well being is dependent upon a functioning and productive natural environment, so this puts
human well being at the core of sustainability debates. The policy implications of this concept are
based on the assumption that: Behaviour can be understood as the pursuit of well being. So if we can
demonstrate how people s well being are dependent on functioning and productive ecosystems, then
behaviour should change to protect those ecosystems. But well being itself is a complex concept.

The shovelnose sturgeon, or Scaphirhynchus platorynchus, is the smallest species of freshwater

The shovelnose is the most abundant of the sturgeon species and is found in the Mississippi River and
Missouri River throughout the United States. The Missouri River and the Mississippi River systems
tend to carry large amounts of sediment. Here the sturgeon inhabits the open channel or main channel
areas of the large rivers. It lives on the bottom, often in areas with swift currents and sand or gravel
bottoms. As with many fish species that live in rivers, the shovelnose sturgeon does not have a
restricted home range and may travel long distances throughout its life.
The shovelnose sturgeon feeds on the bottom, using its protractible mouth to suck up its food. The diet
is mainly aquatic insect larvae, consisting of mayflies and caddisflies. The sturgeon will also feed on

Airbus operates in this industry by building airplanes with seating capacities ranging from 100 to 350

range, increasing its industry market share to approximately 33%. However, quantifying Airbus past
financial success is difficult because prior to its 1999 1.6 billion euro IPO, Airbus was a private
partnership. As a result, very little past financial information is available.
The following analysis identifies the major strategic issues of Airbus and its industry, provides
alternatives and a recommendation of the most optimal solution, and details a plan of implementation
for the company.

The following analysis discusses the suppliers, buyers, industry competition, threats to entry, and
substitutes that exist within the large commercial aircraft industry. Additionally, the analysis identifies
the pressure that each of these groups applies on the industry and estimates the impact this pressure
has on potential industry profits. Each group is identified using a high, medium, or low pressure
classification. A high pressure classification indicates the group reduces industry profit potential and
vice versa. Given the high tech nature of the airplane industry, there are relatively few suppliers
capable of providing parts to Airbus and Boeing. In contrast to Boeing, who relies heavily on
suppliers, Airbus has tried to manufacture the

The Global Population Is Ageing At An Alarming Rate
The global population is ageing at an alarming rate, with over eight precent of the world s population
over 65 and this number is expected to double by the year 2030 (International Federation for Social
Workers, 2012). For Huffnung et. al. (2010), late adulthood encompasses the years following 65 and is
characterised by a period of substantial decline in functioning including physical, psychological and
social. Whilst dementia is not an inevitable part of the ageing process, it has however due to the
ageing population become more prevalent within society, especially within remote aboriginal
communities (Brodaty Cumming 2010 cited in Jones Creedy 2012, p.44). Dementia does not refer to a
single disease rather, a group of symptoms specifically retaining to the cognitive impairment of
individual which later progresses to effect both physical and the social function of sufferers.
Developed by Engel (1977), the biopyschosocial model can be used to examine the progression of this
disease during late adulthood. Thus, late adulthood is seen as a period of significant change with
individual facing unique challenges in regards to development.
Dementia is an emerging global health problem, with the prevalence of this disease estimated to sit at
twenty five million people as of 2003 (Arkles et al., 2014, p.6). However, due to the ageing population
these figures are expected to double every twenty years and is estimated that by the year 2040 that

It doesn t stretch your mind as much as some teachers would like a summer book to do. Even though

Analysis Of The Book The Fear And Loathing
Hunter S. Thompson s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas portrays the American political landscape as
one that is plagued by savagery and excess. The novel paints capitalism as something that emphasizes
and brings to light a potentially inherent ugliness in mankind, depicted through the simultaneous
contrived and organic nature of such a dominating system. The book s reaction to this system is a push
and pull, two way reflection, mankind and the system influencing one another and sharing similar
likenesses whether organic or socialized, culminating in Raoul Duke s very reactionary response to the
bleak and manipulatory nature of capitalism. The novel is full of various parallels, system and
individual behaving similarly and almost attempting to outdo one another but just culminating in a
circle of madness which Raoul Duke and his attorney attempt to yet can t reject outright or at all.
Raoul and his attorney exist in a political landscape that is vast, savage, and dominating, and through
their attempt to protest and compensate for such a painful system through the use of drugs and
excessive indulgence, turn out to instead be pained and flawed culminations of the system they are
trying to protest.
The whole plot of the novel begins with our protagonist sitting in a hotel lounge in Beverly Hills. He

naïve admiration for the Pharaoh like grandeur of the war, are reminders of how little he knows.
However the audience shares in Jim s growing horror as we discover what it s really like when he gets
into the trenches. Clancy whom by now the reader has associated with as a lovable larrikin is blasted
out of existence , Eric s legs are torn off and Bob coughs up his lungs. These ghastly images as
witnesses by Jim causes the reader to react in an anti war way. Hence through contrast of settings
Malouf shows his condescending attitude towards war.
Malouf uses poignant metaphors which relate to the central character and delivers his message of life s
meaning even after death. The concluding scene where Imogen is on the beach reflecting upon Jim s
unnecessarily shortened life, the wave is a metaphor for Jim s life. Growing bigger and higher until
ultimately crashing down symbolic of the rising and falling of Jim s life. Like a wave Jim reached his
peak which was death. Also when Jim, running towards the enemy lines, sees himself a distant slow
moving figure within the long view of all their lives , he is understanding that life is something that
moves relentlessly towards death. here Malouf seeks to say that we are not divine creatures but instead
mortal. We must accept that ultimate change which is the subject

The Media s Role Of A Democratic Nation
The news media is an important aspect of a democratic nation, as one of their roles is to be a voice of
the public to mediate between the public and the government. Anderson (2007) asserts that the
normative roles of the news media in a democratic society are to undertake the role of the fourth
estate, act as a watchdog, and when necessary, as a counterbalance to those in society who abuse their
power. In other words, the media s function in society is critical to ensuring a balanced governance
and providing reliable information to the public. It is the primary institution within which the public
can better understand its society and the world around them. This paper synthesizes my research
findings regarding the saturation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are also expected to report news that informs, engages and educates the public on issues that
affect them, news that is independent of vested interest (Mcquail, 1994). Most of the ethical codes as
stated above, concentrate on providing reliable information to the public as well as avoiding bias and
sensationalism in the news.
On the other hand, Atton (2003) describes alternative media as a critical means to challenge the
standardised and professionalised practices of mainstream media. It is guided by a purpose other than
profit, unlike mainstream media which is often structured to promote consumption of the products it
advertises (Skinner, 2009). Alternative media does not claim to be objective. It does not consider itself
bound by the conventions of journalism. It sees itself as providing a platform for everyone to voice
their opinions (i.e. a platform for horizontal communication) (Hackett Zhao, 2002). What I found
through my research is that mainstream media does not always follow its role of maintaining ideal
journalistic standards. It more often focuses on reporting sensational news for entertainment
commercial purposes, rather than news that intellectually informs, engages and educates the public.
Mehrotra (2011) defines media sensationalism as the style of reporting news to the public which
involves use of fear, anger, excitement and crude thrill undertaken by the media to increase the

The Steady Rise in Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence Over the years the violence has been on the rise worldwide. This influx in the rate
of violence has been impacting our lives and most importantly there has been a significant rise in the
domestic violence. The main victims have been the females and they have been persecuted in a
number of ways and it has not helped their cause at all. Domestic violence against the females has
existed for centuries now and time and again there have been cases where they were forced to the limit
but things have never become so gloomy and open as they are now. When the violence starts to
infringe upon the right of the other person then it starts to take the form of crime. Such criminal acts
have been rising by and far over the past many decades and more and more cases are coming forward.
It is not only a social case anymore but also a social issue, which needs to be addressed as the society,
and the lifestyles have to be well and truly preserved. To do away with these criminal activities one
would need to identify what are the real acts of violence and domestic problems being faced by
couples and females and only then can a viable solution be suggested to keep the things in order. Over
the years there have been a lot of respite in regard to this case by having laws and acts to provide
cover for such issues. So what are the primary goals of any good criminal justice system? The answer
is simple that is to make it a more just, fair and equitable society for all. By

Home Energy Conservation
Home Energy Conservation So you think the cost of gas is outrageous? Most Americans do. The
controversies in the Middle East and recent environmental disasters have made the cost of many
natural resources, like oil, sky rocket. So imagine the amount of oil needed to power your car and
compare that to the amount of oil needed to heat your home. Home energy conservation is a way that
Americans can counter act the estimated high costs to heat, cool or light their residence. In the old
days energy conservation was as simple turning off a light when you left a room, or setting a timer on
your thermostat to regulate when your heat or air conditioning came on. These techniques are still
valuable but America, and the world, has taken a more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More effective response to the challenges of increasing complexity in NRM requires a shift in
thinking from the linearity of research extension farmer to alternative, multiple actor institutional
arrangements and innovation systems. To overcome the weak attribution of research outcomes to
actual impact, it also suggests an alternative to conventional impact assessment in natural resource
management interventions. (Environment, 2007) Economic Issues Geothermal energy uses the natural
heat beneath the earth s surface. In home and commercial installations geothermal systems can
provide effective heating and cooling abilities. The system relies on the average 50 degree temperature
of the earth s soil below the frost line. The depth of this temperature is usually found at about 6 to 10
feet below the surface. The system provides both heating and cooling abilities by transferring heat
energy through water exchange. Water filled coils are buried at a specified depth in the soil (Hefler,
2007). Depending upon whether heating or cooling is needed the system either absorbs heat from the
earth or dissipates heat into the soil via the water filled tubes. Advantages of Geothermal Energy
Production There are some key advantages to geothermal energy production. One advantage is that a
single system can provide both heating

Encryption and Its Uses in Communication
Encryption is a very important aspect of our daily lives. Everywhere we go and everything we do now
involves some sort of encryption technology. From turning on our cars to using a card access to gain
entry to our workplace, encryption is there. More specifically, encryption in communication is a vital
component to everyday life. Without encryption, our lives would be much different and unsecure.
According to Oded Goldreich (2004), There are 2 main types of encryption: One is called Symmetric
key and the other is public key encryption (pp 375 376). The Symmetric key algorithm uses the same
cipher for both encryption and decryption. Conversely, the public key algorithm requires 2 separate
keys. One of these keys encrypts the text or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even common household devices such as refrigerators now have WiFi access. Thermostats also can be
controlled via the internet now. As you can see, technology is ever evolving and growing. It doesn t
seem to be slowing down at all. Encryption is a great tool that is protection the assets of many
companies. Referring back to an access card, companies rely on these to protect their buildings from
unwanted access. Encryption definitely protects digital assets too. Many software products that we use
are protected by a license or authentication key. This key is a special encrypted phrase that grants
access to the software. It can prevent people from stealing software without paying for it. While some
companies are viewed as being greedy, in all honesty it does cost time and money to develop software
and products that people want to buy. These products need to be secured in the interest of the company
because it is in human nature to be dishonest, disloyal, and to be a thief in many cases. Going back
almost ten years, companies were looking for ways to prevent game stealing. A pioneer in the gaming
industry, Valve, took action by suspending 20,000 users who had stolen their software (GameSpot).
While this was an example of how encryption was used to catch thieves, encryption can also be used
to prevent unauthorized access. This is the case in many industries such as the

The Mayans of Mesoamerica Essay
The Mayans of Mesoamerica
The ancient Mayans were a very well developed society with a very accurate calendar, skilled
architects, artisans, extensive traders and hunters. They are known to have developed medicine and
astronomy as well. All of this was developed while the Europeans were still in the Dark Ages.
Their empire covered an area of roughly 400,000 to 500,000 square kilometers. This area included the
present day countries of Belize, Guatemala, western Honduras and El Salvador, and also southern
portions of Mexico. These lands have a very diverse terrain, from the mountainous highlands to the
tropical lowlands. The wide range of geographical features meant that the ... Show more content on

The Maya civilization can be divided into three main periods: Pre Classic, Classic, and Post Classic.
Their greatest accomplishments most likely took place in the Classic period. This period occurred
between 250 and 910AD. An extensive trade network was in place during this period that allowed the
civilization to grow as large as sixty separate kingdoms. Other technological advances also took place
during this time.
They developed their writing system, mathematics, astronomy, and calendars. Their study of
astronomy allowed them to predict when there would be a solar or lunar eclipse. They also developed
their calendar that is called the Long Count Calendar. The Long Count Calendar was not completely a
Mayan creation because they inherited the basic form from the Toltec.
The mathematics developed by the Maya was a base 20 numbering system. This is similar to the base
10 system we use today. The Maya were able to do this using only three symbols, the dot, the bar, and
a symbol for zero.
The numbering system was written vertically instead of horizontally like the one we use today. The
base level can be represented by 20^0, and each additional level increases the exponent by one. This is
shown in the graphic below.
The Mayan calendar has a starting date of 3113BC that is given the year 0. It used their base 20
numbering system to represent periods of time. There

The Development Of The Philippines
The Philippines is located in the South East region of Asia, this region consists of other countries such
as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and others. The Philippines would be categorized as a
developing country in stage three of the demographic transition model. With a falling birth rate of
24.24 per every 1000 people, with a low death rate of 4.92 per every 1000 people. With a population
of 107.668.231 as of 2014, their median age is 23.5 years of age resulting in a very young population
overall as seen in the population pyramid. The triangular shape, with a large number of the population
below 30 years of age. The sex ratio of the Philippines is one male for every woman, and a life
expectancy of 73 years from birth. The Philippines has a rapidly growing population with a large
increase of young people starting to become a part of the working class (15 to 60 years of age),
resulting in not enough jobs for these people resulting in unemployment, temporary emigration or
permanent emigration. The Philippines has been lagging behind its neighboring countries such as the
People s Republic of China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam both economically and in public
education for the past four decades. With its economy being characterized by boom bust cycles and
episodes of moderate economic growth little has helped to alleviate the poverty. Poverty among
households has increased from 24.4% to 26.9% between the years of 2003 and 2006. With the increase

Imagery Of Blood In Macbeth
A guilty conscience allows the mind to think irrational thoughts. Sometimes guilt can be so hard on a
person that the mind begins to imagine things that refer that person back to what they are feeling
guilty from. In William Shakespeare s, Macbeth, blood, whether imaginary or real, is a common
occurrence as the play progresses. The imagery of blood is mostly referenced to when it is imagined
on an object such as hands, dagger, or the floor. Guilt can be demonstrated differently on each person.
For Macbeth, he imagines blood before he even commits a crime that would lead him to feel remorse,
whereas his wife, Lady Macbeth feels the guilt long after crimes have been committed. Both imagine
blood, but it is important to examine how each one deals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall, the blood in this play is depicted as a means for the guilt from which the characters feel.
Imagery of blood is used many times during the play, aside from the instances that Macbeth and Lady
Macbeth use it to depict their guilt that they have. Macbeth was considered a hero before he plotted
his fiendish actions to become king, as he was credited with defeating King of Norway in a bloody
battle. In fact, Macbeth ne er shook hands nor bade farewell to him, till he unseamed him from the
nave to th chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements, (1.2.21 23). Macbeth was very gory with
his killing as he cut his enemy, Macdonwald, from his bellybutton to his jaw, and placed his head on
top of their battlement. Blood plays a much larger role in this play, as it is an underlying factor to
Macbeth s self. The basis of his character is a bloody, war hero; therefore why should his life outside
of battle be any different. Since Macbeth s entrance into the play was about blood, his exit shall be as
well. He foreshadows his own demise as he says, It will have blood, they say. Blood will have blood.
Stones have been known to move, and trees to speak. Augurs and understood relations have by magot
pies and choughs and rooks brought forth, (3.4.124 128). Macbeth knows that he will not get away
with his murder of Duncan and Banquo. Once blood has been shed, the murder victim will seek to
expose his murderer, thus finding Macbeth guilty. He knows that he cannot keep what he has done a
secret forever, thus is blood must fall in order to avenge the deaths he has taken. The imagery of blood
is present throughout the play to examine the guilt that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel, but also to
provide a higher meaning to the context of the character that Macbeth is and the way that karma

Essay On Dunkirk
When I found out that the latest project from director/writer Christopher Nolan titled Dunkirk was
only 107 minutes, I was stunned. Usually, his films are about 30 minutes short of hostage situations. It
s a bit odd how he chose his first two hour film in 15 years to be about the Dunkirk evacuation. For
you history buffs out there, Battle of Dunkirk took place in WWII in 1940, the Allied forces of Europe
fighting Nazi Germany finds themselves overrun in France and desperately seeking escape. The
problem is, the Germany forces are wreaking havoc on the British Forces ships with precision air
strikes and escape seems to be downright impossible without the help of civilian s boats and some
very crafty fighter pilots.
Right off the bat, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You don t know where the next shot is coming from and you can never relax because the pacing of the
movie comes like a tidal wave of dread. An interesting creative decision here is that even though this
is clearly WWII and we know who the enemy is, you never see a single German soldier, not even a
Nazi Germany flag is present. The closest you get to an enemy is the aerial assault from many jets
fighter. The absence of a physical enemy, it doesn t affect this survival film one bit, if anything it
strikes up more paranoia keeping the audience uneasy the way through.
If there is one downside Dunkirk it s that the constant sight of soldiers being attacked can be repetitive
and emotionally be draining for the viewer but simply put this is a story about unsung heroes of WWII
both with and without a gun. If the evacuation from Dunkirk had failed, history would have a much
scarier outlook than today. Christopher Nolan makes up for a bloated disappointing Interstellar, with a
film that excels in cinematography, sound, story, acting, and relevance. Dunkirk is easily one of the
best films of the years and it didn t take 2 hours and 45 minutes to do that...take

  • 2. Argumentative Essay On Wicca To understand the great right, you first have to understand that Wicca is a fertility religion. The founder of Wicca Gerald Gardner explains Wicca as a very ancient ritualistic religion based on survival. This rite is more closely based on the ritual of Beltane. During the Beltane rites the high priest or priestess will enact the fertility rite by inserting the athame (which represents the horned god) into the chalice (which represents the mother goddess). This is a form of sympathetic magick where we enact a bigger picture with our own ritual tools. Before i did the research i honestly thought the great rite had Something to do with sex. While it does indeed have to do with sex its much more about fertility. I now know that the great rite has everything to do with praying to the gods through ritual. Praying for fertility to the earth, animals and plants. Author Vivianne Crowley says in Wicca: The Old Religion in the New Age, The outer rite involves a linking of the male and the female; the sacred marriage is outwardly a marriage of two people, but inwardly it is a marriage of the two within one person. The Great Rite is more than just a sexual union; it is the enactment of the creation of the universe itself in the Wiccan tradition. In modern Wicca, many practioners can and will use sex in ritual but this is more often than not used in personal practice. Marriott is a leading hospitality company with revenues of nearly $13 billion a year, a fortune 500 company, and over 4,000 properties in 78 countries. They have a majority of their properties in the United States and Europe, but also have properties in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Middle East, and South America. I will discuss this company s strategic plan, policies and procedures, vision, and more. First off, it all began with a root beer stand. John and Alice Marriott decided to open a root beer stand in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1927. After this was such a success, they decided to expand and open restaurants in 1953. Then, in 1957 they opened their first motel in Arlington, VA. Eventually, their son Bill Marriott took over the family business and made the company one of the world s leading hospitality companies. The Marriott offers a variety of services to their customers. They have certain rewards programs to save you money, complimentary breakfast at some of the hotels, great customer service. They also book events, like social events, wedding receptions, meetings, etc. The Marriott says they do not have a mission statement. They said they have a vision statement instead, which is to be the #1 hospitality company in the world. They value putting people first, pursuing excellence, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human Interaction with Nature in the Works of Aldo Leopold and Elizabeth Bishop The poet Elizabeth Bishop and the naturalist Aldo Leopold share a keen power of observation, a beautifully detailed manner of writing, a love for the beauty of nature, and an interest in how people interact with the natural world. Like Leopold, Bishop examines human interactions with nature on both the personal and the ecological level. On the individual level, a hunter s contact with the animal he or she is hunting changes his or her attitude toward nature in both Bishop s poem The Fish and Leopold s essay Thinking Like a Mountain. For both narrators, this lack of emotional connection changes when they notice some striking detail about the wolf or fish which awakens them to the symbolic value of the animal and transforms their way of relating to nature. Leopold sees a fierce green fire dying (130) in the eyes of the wolf and senses that his neat equation of fewer wolves equals more deer is inadequate, and that wolves have an importance unknown to him. He goes on to develop a new conservation ethic, one that values wolves as well as deer and protects wild animals for their own sake and that of the ecosystem, not just for the pleasure of hunters. Bishop s speaker notices five fishhooks dangling from the fish s mouth and realizes how many times the fish has battled for its life and won. Its fighting spirit earns her respect and causes her to release the fish. The particular symbolic value that each writer finds in the wild animal is evident in his or her beautifully poetic descriptions of the animal. Each admires the animal for its undaunted courage in the face of a harsh existence. Bishop repeatedly uses words and images which personify the fish as a wise old warrior: the fish is battered and venerable (8), his skin is like ancient wallpaper (11), and the broken fishing lines that hang from his mouth are like medals ... Introduction. The author studies the relationships between the director overlap and financial reporting quality, and for that purpose, analyzes the compensation measurement system and how it tights to performance (p. 183). The researcher also focuses on the impact of audit committee on the reporting and disclosure. The main objective of the research is to examine the impact of director overlap on earnings, compensation of executives and independence of the audit committee on financial performance, ethical financial reporting, and disclosure. The importance of the study lies in analysis of the control issues, equity based measures, interests of shareholders, managers ability to prevent fraud, independent financial experts, ethics requirement for reporting, and SEC ethics rule. The author considers two problems: how the level or degree of audit committee independence affect the quality of financial reporting; and the relationship between cash incentives and compensation (p. 184). • 6. Deception, Lying, And Other Cases In Element 1, I will present some cases where deception is thought to be lying, and other cases where deception is not thought to be lying. I will contend that, when deception is lying, it is immoral and I will give reasons for why this is the case. After my presentation, I will take a look at some possible criticisms of my arguments and then answer those criticisms. Then, I will present my conclusions. In Element 2, I will contend that people for whatever reason choose to lie about things in order to persuade others into thinking that the truth is on their side. Lying takes a group of actions or words that are clearly false to the perpetrator to try to bait someone into thinking that it is truthful. When deceptions are thought to be lies, it can be a very eerie situation because the person that was lied to did not get complete or enough adequate information of what was told. Yes, what someone said may have been truthful, but not all of the information was being told. The person receiving the information is left without additional pieces to the story although he or she does not know this, which makes the person assume that what you said was the end all be all to the situation. These situations can likely equate to being a lie because of the information that was omitted. Once the person finds out that pieces of information was left out or incomplete, they will feel like they were lied to. Water supply and demand issues are especially more complicated in areas of rapid urban and population growth. Projections say that 46 to 52 countries and a total population of 3 billion people will be water stressed by 2025 (Rosegrant, 1997). And to increase a little bit more the complexity, there is the fact that water availability is not homogeneous. Water is irregularly distributed and, consequently, water problems are region specific. Water supply and demand problems usually fall into the wicked problem category. Their complexity is based on the fact that they have many interdependencies, are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Groundwater supplies and surface water supplies outside of the local catchment area are commonly used when the local surface water supply is insufficient. Increasing levels of groundwater exploitation can significantly decrease groundwater levels, leading to several environmental problems. An example is what s been occurring in the North China Plain, where the mean depth to water changed from 7.23 m in 1983 to 11.52 m in 1993, characterizing a decrease of approximately 0.5 m per year (Changming et al, 2001). Groundwater table drops at those rates can severely impact the environment. Groundwater depletion can lead to the formation of depression cones, which can often cause land subsidence. Water level drops in coastal areas result in intrusion of seawater, deteriorating the water quality. And, in urban centres and surroundings, water resources are threatened by untreated urban and industrial wastewater discharge. The increasing demand for water resources can severely affect natural ecosystems. For the construction of a dam, a large area is going to end up under water, severely impacting terrestrial ecosystems. Overexploitation of water for irrigation can seriously affect aquatic ecosystems. The main factors that is responsible for the increase in the incidence of female infanticide and foeticide is the low status of women, son preference, and the practice of dowry across all casts groups. The low status of women and girls is due to cultural beliefs and the material cost they represent to their families. Therefore, they become dependent on men, whether it is the father, the husband or the son. The preference for male children is due to three major reasons. One is the economic value of having sons. Sons are more likely than daughters to provide family labour on the farm or in a family business, earn wages, and support their parents during old age. Upon marriage, a son brings a daughter in law into his family, and she provides additional help around the house as well as she brings riches in the form of dowry payments. Another important advantage of having sons is their social cultural utility. In India patriarchal family system, having one son is essential for the continuation of the family line, and many sons provide high status to the family. • 22. Triangulum Galaxy Essay According to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to classify an object as a planet it must have three qualities. One it must orbit a Sun or Star of some kind. Second it must big enough for gravity to compress it into a big round ball. And lastly it must be big enough to pull neighboring objects into the planet itself or sling shot them around the planet and shoot them off into outer space. The place for my planet is in the Triangulum Galaxy. The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy about 2.7 million light years (25761569076837520000km)away from Earth. The solar mass of the Triangulum Galaxy is 50 billion Mʘ (standard unit of mass in Astronomy). This galaxy has about 40 billion stars which is 1/5th of how many there are in the Milky Way Galaxy. And 1/25th s of the Andromeda Galaxy. The name of my planet is Frigusodayin (Cold Air)(Latin, Armenian). The first rule of classifying a planet states that it must orbit a Sun or Star. The Sun my planet will orbit is called WASP 56. Some properties of WASP 56 are that this star has an apparent magnitude of 11.48. Apparent magnitude is the brightness of an object as seen from Earth. The higher the apparent magnitude the brighter it is (Our Sun s is 26.7). This star is a G6 star which is part of the G Type main sequence star group. • 23. Invitation To A Dialogue A Challenge To America Since the beginning of minimum wage during the Great Depression, the discussion of the how much minimum wage should be has always been occurring. Currently there is a strong push for the minimum wage to be raised, especially as Americans compare the current American rate to other countries rates. The New York Times recently reported that unionized Danish fast food workers are paid more than twice as much as the average fast food worker in America, and the Danish workers also receive benefits and paid vacation (Salz par. 2). Salz in his article, Invitation to a Dialogue: A Challenge to America, begs America to change its minimum wage rate so as to better take care of Americans. What Salz fails to take into account is the context of the comparison of rates along with the purpose of minimum wage when it was created, the effects of raising the minimum wage, and looking at the costs involved. In Salz s article he compares the pay of Danish workers to American workers. This is two different contexts which must be taken into account. One cannot merely compare the dollar amount of pay when the cost of living, workers skill level, and taxes must be taken into consideration. The cost of living is much higher in Europe, for example, than in America. Also, the Danish workers are unionized compared to non unionized, fast food workers in America, which begs the question of what are union costs and what is involved with being in a union. In Salz s article, he assumes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Music In Ancient Greek Music Music in Ancient Greece was well integrated in their society, it played a large role in various ceremonies from marriages to funerals, as well as entertainment like plays or epic poetry. Although it is believed that music was invented in Africa over 55,000 years ago, music really began and took shape in Ancient Greece. Even the word music came from the Greek word muses who were believed to be the daughters of Zeus and were the patron Goddesses of creativity. There are many references to music in ancient Greece, from drawings on pottery of people playing, as well as literary works that even describe how the instruments sounded. Speaking of instruments, in addition to the voice being used as one, there are several instruments that are known to have existed in Ancient Greece, a few different string instruments including a lyre, a kithara (which is believed to be the ancient equivalent of a guitar), and a barbitos, which is a taller version of a lyre. They also had several wind type instruments including and aulos, pan pipes, a hydraulis (which eventually led to the modern day organ), as well as a salpinx, which was an ancient type of trumpet with a bone mouthpiece that was the origin of the many brass instruments that we know of today. Finally, we also know of several percussion instruments that were used by the ancient Greeks, these include a tympanum, which was like a tambourine, a crotala, and a koudounia. In 2013 total spending on health care was $2.9 trillion and consumed 42% of federal revenues. Despite the high cost of care, America s health seems to pale in comparison to other developed countries. Blame is often assigned to poor health policy, an aging and overweight population, and inefficient systems that involve unnecessary testing and extended hospital stays. While all of these factors undoubtedly play a role, perhaps it is the very foundations and methodologies of western medicine that are causing the uncontrollable climb of health care costs. Since its inception, television has played a crucial role in shaping, forming, and producing a distinctly American national imagery of acceptable normalcy, especially in regards to African Americans and their shifting television portrayals. In addition, Herman S. Gray argues in his article Television and the Politics of Difference that the creation and delineation of difference is an essential aspect of television, and that this production of difference is perhaps most visible in the characterizations and representations of African Americans on television due to a product and capitalism based business model. The early years of television were notable for their lack of black representation. Television was primarily prioritized for the baby boom families and their entertainment needs, so the appearance of black stars was rare. When an African American superstar did appear as a guest on nightly programming, it was an exciting event for people of color. Subsequently, exemplifications became a source of pride in black communities and families. If we are managing ecosystems, then in theory, we need to also be managing people, essentially speaking, if we develop management tools that are effective and equitable and also meet the needs of people, then we really need to understand how people use and interact with their environments, how they value and prioritise those interactions and why. Essentially speaking, 15 out of the 24 ecosystem services assessed belong in the degraded category, most of them in the regulating category, with the second most in the provisioning. When looking towards the mixed results category, it means they have increased in some part of the world and decreased in others, therefore mixed. Finally, the last four services were enhanced. Note that three of these are actually services that have a value in the marketplace. Often our interventions in ecosystems are about optimising or maximising those services with value in the marketplace, but sometimes at the expense of these other services. So when focusing on the ecosystem services, we must ask ourselves, how can their value be incorporated in decisions? Human well being is dependent upon a functioning and productive natural environment, so this puts human well being at the core of sustainability debates. The policy implications of this concept are based on the assumption that: Behaviour can be understood as the pursuit of well being. The Global Population Is Ageing At An Alarming Rate The global population is ageing at an alarming rate, with over eight precent of the world s population over 65 and this number is expected to double by the year 2030 (International Federation for Social Workers, 2012). For Huffnung et. al. (2010), late adulthood encompasses the years following 65 and is characterised by a period of substantial decline in functioning including physical, psychological and social. Whilst dementia is not an inevitable part of the ageing process, it has however due to the ageing population become more prevalent within society, especially within remote aboriginal communities (Brodaty Cumming 2010 cited in Jones Creedy 2012, p.44). It is not only a social case anymore but also a social issue, which needs to be addressed as the society, and the lifestyles have to be well and truly preserved. Over the years there have been a lot of respite in regard to this case by having laws and acts to provide cover for such issues. So what are the primary goals of any good criminal justice system? The answer is simple that is to make it a more just, fair and equitable society for all. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Home Energy Conservation Home Energy Conservation So you think the cost of gas is outrageous? Most Americans do. The controversies in the Middle East and recent environmental disasters have made the cost of many natural resources, like oil, sky rocket. So imagine the amount of oil needed to power your car and compare that to the amount of oil needed to heat your home. Home energy conservation is a way that Americans can counter act the estimated high costs to heat, cool or light their residence. In the old days energy conservation was as simple turning off a light when you left a room, or setting a timer on your thermostat to regulate when your heat or air conditioning came on. These techniques are still valuable but America, and the world, has taken a more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More effective response to the challenges of increasing complexity in NRM requires a shift in thinking from the linearity of research extension farmer to alternative, multiple actor institutional arrangements and innovation systems. To overcome the weak attribution of research outcomes to actual impact, it also suggests an alternative to conventional impact assessment in natural resource management interventions. (Environment, 2007) Economic Issues Geothermal energy uses the natural heat beneath the earth s surface. In home and commercial installations geothermal systems can provide effective heating and cooling abilities. The system relies on the average 50 degree temperature of the earth s soil below the frost line. The depth of this temperature is usually found at about 6 to 10 feet below the surface. The system provides both heating and cooling abilities by transferring heat energy through water exchange. Water filled coils are buried at a specified depth in the soil (Hefler, 2007). Depending upon whether heating or cooling is needed the system either absorbs heat from the earth or dissipates heat into the soil via the water filled tubes. Advantages of Geothermal Energy Production There are some key advantages to geothermal energy production. One advantage is that a single system can provide both heating ... • 45. Encryption and Its Uses in Communication Encryption is a very important aspect of our daily lives. Everywhere we go and everything we do now involves some sort of encryption technology. From turning on our cars to using a card access to gain entry to our workplace, encryption is there. More specifically, encryption in communication is a vital component to everyday life. Without encryption, our lives would be much different and unsecure. According to Oded Goldreich (2004), There are 2 main types of encryption: One is called Symmetric key and the other is public key encryption (pp 375 376). The Symmetric key algorithm uses the same cipher for both encryption and decryption. Conversely, the public key algorithm requires 2 separate keys. One of these keys encrypts the text or ... As you can see, technology is ever evolving and growing. It doesn t seem to be slowing down at all. Encryption is a great tool that is protection the assets of many companies. Referring back to an access card, companies rely on these to protect their buildings from unwanted access. Encryption definitely protects digital assets too. Many software products that we use are protected by a license or authentication key. This key is a special encrypted phrase that grants access to the software. It can prevent people from stealing software without paying for it. While some companies are viewed as being greedy, in all honesty it does cost time and money to develop software and products that people want to buy. These products need to be secured in the interest of the company because it is in human nature to be dishonest, disloyal, and to be a thief in many cases. Going back almost ten years, companies were looking for ways to prevent game stealing. A pioneer in the gaming industry, Valve, took action by suspending 20,000 users who had stolen their software (GameSpot). While this was an example of how encryption was used to catch thieves, encryption can also be used to prevent unauthorized access. This is the case in many industries such as the ... • 46. The Mayans of Mesoamerica Essay The Mayans of Mesoamerica The ancient Mayans were a very well developed society with a very accurate calendar, skilled architects, artisans, extensive traders and hunters. They are known to have developed medicine and astronomy as well. All of this was developed while the Europeans were still in the Dark Ages. Their empire covered an area of roughly 400,000 to 500,000 square kilometers. This area included the present day countries of Belize, Guatemala, western Honduras and El Salvador, and also southern portions of Mexico. These lands have a very diverse terrain, from the mountainous highlands to the tropical lowlands. The wide range of geographical features meant that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Maya civilization can be divided into three main periods: Pre Classic, Classic, and Post Classic. Their greatest accomplishments most likely took place in the Classic period. This period occurred between 250 and 910AD. An extensive trade network was in place during this period that allowed the civilization to grow as large as sixty separate kingdoms. Other technological advances also took place during this time. They developed their writing system, mathematics, astronomy, and calendars. Their study of astronomy allowed them to predict when there would be a solar or lunar eclipse. They also developed their calendar that is called the Long Count Calendar. The Long Count Calendar was not completely a Mayan creation because they inherited the basic form from the Toltec. The mathematics developed by the Maya was a base 20 numbering system. This is similar to the base 10 system we use today. The Maya were able to do this using only three symbols, the dot, the bar, and a symbol for zero. The numbering system was written vertically instead of horizontally like the one we use today. The base level can be represented by 20^0, and each additional level increases the exponent by one. This is shown in the graphic below. The Mayan calendar has a starting date of 3113BC that is given the year 0. It used their base 20 numbering system to represent periods of time. There ... • 48. Imagery Of Blood In Macbeth A guilty conscience allows the mind to think irrational thoughts. Sometimes guilt can be so hard on a person that the mind begins to imagine things that refer that person back to what they are feeling guilty from. In William Shakespeare s, Macbeth, blood, whether imaginary or real, is a common occurrence as the play progresses. The imagery of blood is mostly referenced to when it is imagined on an object such as hands, dagger, or the floor. Guilt can be demonstrated differently on each person. For Macbeth, he imagines blood before he even commits a crime that would lead him to feel remorse, whereas his wife, Lady Macbeth feels the guilt long after crimes have been committed. Both imagine blood, but it is important to examine how each one deals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, the blood in this play is depicted as a means for the guilt from which the characters feel. Imagery of blood is used many times during the play, aside from the instances that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth use it to depict their guilt that they have. Macbeth was considered a hero before he plotted his fiendish actions to become king, as he was credited with defeating King of Norway in a bloody battle. In fact, Macbeth ne er shook hands nor bade farewell to him, till he unseamed him from the nave to th chops, and fixed his head upon our battlements, (1.2.21 23). Macbeth was very gory with his killing as he cut his enemy, Macdonwald, from his bellybutton to his jaw, and placed his head on top of their battlement. Blood plays a much larger role in this play, as it is an underlying factor to Macbeth s self. The basis of his character is a bloody, war hero; therefore why should his life outside of battle be any different. Since Macbeth s entrance into the play was about blood, his exit shall be as well. He foreshadows his own demise as he says, It will have blood, they say. Blood will have blood. Stones have been known to move, and trees to speak. Augurs and understood relations have by magot pies and choughs and rooks brought forth, (3.4.124 128). Macbeth knows that he will not get away with his murder of Duncan and Banquo. Once blood has been shed, the murder victim will seek to expose his murderer, thus finding Macbeth guilty. He knows that he cannot keep what he has done a secret forever, thus is blood must fall in order to avenge the deaths he has taken. The imagery of blood is present throughout the play to examine the guilt that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feel, but also to provide a higher meaning to the context of the character that Macbeth is and the way that karma ... • 49. Essay On Dunkirk When I found out that the latest project from director/writer Christopher Nolan titled Dunkirk was only 107 minutes, I was stunned. Usually, his films are about 30 minutes short of hostage situations. It s a bit odd how he chose his first two hour film in 15 years to be about the Dunkirk evacuation. For you history buffs out there, Battle of Dunkirk took place in WWII in 1940, the Allied forces of Europe fighting Nazi Germany finds themselves overrun in France and desperately seeking escape. The problem is, the Germany forces are wreaking havoc on the British Forces ships with precision air strikes and escape seems to be downright impossible without the help of civilian s boats and some very crafty fighter pilots. Right off the bat, this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You don t know where the next shot is coming from and you can never relax because the pacing of the movie comes like a tidal wave of dread. An interesting creative decision here is that even though this is clearly WWII and we know who the enemy is, you never see a single German soldier, not even a Nazi Germany flag is present. The closest you get to an enemy is the aerial assault from many jets fighter. The absence of a physical enemy, it doesn t affect this survival film one bit, if anything it strikes up more paranoia keeping the audience uneasy the way through. If there is one downside Dunkirk it s that the constant sight of soldiers being attacked can be repetitive and emotionally be draining for the viewer but simply put this is a story about unsung heroes of WWII both with and without a gun. If the evacuation from Dunkirk had failed, history would have a much scarier outlook than today. Christopher Nolan makes up for a bloated disappointing Interstellar, with a film that excels in cinematography, sound, story, acting, and relevance. Dunkirk is easily one of the best films of the years and it didn t take 2 hours and 45 minutes to do that...take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
