WHAT IS ECOSYSTEM?
An ecosystem is a community of living
organisms in conjunction with the nonliving
components of their environment (things
like air, water and mineral soil), interacting
as a system.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ABIOTIC FACTORS?
In biology and ecology, abiotic
components or abiotic factors are non-
living chemical and physical parts of the
environment that affect living organisms
and the functioning of ecosystems. Abiotic
factors and phenomena associated with
them underpin all biology.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ABIOTIC
FACTORS?
Sunlight is a portion of the
electromagnetic radiation
given off by the Sun, in
particular infrared, visible,
and ultraviolet light.
SUNLIGHT
AIR
ATMOSPHERE
Atmosphere is a layer of
gases surrounding a
planet or other material
body of sufficient mass
that is held in place by the
gravity of the body.
WATER
WATER
Water covers 71% of the Earth's surface.
It is vital for all known forms of life. On
Earth, 96.5% of the planet's crust water is
found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in
groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the
ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland, a
small fraction in other large water
bodies, and 0.001% in the air as vapor,
clouds
SOIL
SOIL
Soil is the mixture of
minerals, organic matter,
gases, liquids, and the
countless organisms that
together support life on
Earth.

TEMPERATURE
TEMPERATURE
A temperature is an
objective comparative
measure of hot or cold. It is
measured by a
thermometer.
ABOTIC INFLUENCE ON ECOSYSTEM
 Abiotic factors such as temperature, light, and
soil can influence a species’ ability to survive.
 Every species is able to survive within a
range of each of these factors.
 This range is called the species’ tolerance
range.
 Near the upper and lower limits of the
tolerance range, individuals experience
stress. This will reduce their health and their
rate of growth and reproduction.
ROLE OF ABIOTIC FACTORS IN COMMUNITY
ORGANIZATION
Determine the abiotic factors that affect plant
growth:
 Primary production,on which almost all of life
on earth is dependent, occurs through either
photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.
 Warm and wet climates have the greatest
amount of plant biomass because they offer
conditions in which photosynthesis,plant
growth, and the resulting net primary
productive and highest.
SOME OTHER ABIOTIC COMPONENTS
 Natural disturbances:Like annual
flooding,fire,strom,lightning also influence the
ecosystem and biotic components.
 pH value:Most of the organisms live in
neutral and nearly neutral condition.Some
plants like maize grow well in acidic
condition and some plants like coconut grow
well in alkaline conditions.
 Humidity: The humidity in air affects the rate
of transpiration in plants and animals. In low
level humidity water evaporates faster.
Humidity is lower during day and higher
during night.
