This document summarizes a study on accretion formation in direct reduction iron (DRI) kilns and possible ways to reduce it. Accretion forms from the deposition of low-melting complex compounds on the refractory kiln wall and hinders material flow. Reasons for accretion include compounds in the FeO-SiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-MgO-FeO-SiO2-Al2O3 systems from iron ore, dolomite, and coal. Analysis found phases like fayalite and anorthite. Accretion can be reduced by using higher quality raw materials, controlling kiln temperature, and adding compounds to increase fusion temperatures.
