2. Invasion or penetration of living
tissue of animal by the larvae of
Diptera is known as myiasis.
When the flies come in contact with
the wound they lay eggs which
under suitable condition hatched
into maggot which burrow down
into the subcutaneous tissue
resulting the soft tissue destruction
and degeneration.
It is reported that the affected
sheep may die due to severe
invasion by maggot. Maggot feeds
on carcass contaminated by
Clostridium botulinum may contain
a dose of toxin lethal to birds and
domestic poultry.
INTRODUCTIN
3. Types of Myiasis and cause:
Screw worm myiasis- Caused by Cochliomya
hominivoras , Chrysomyla bezzlana
Blow fly myiasis/cutaneous myiasis/ traumatic
myiasis- Caused by Lucillia Sp. Phormaia Sp.
Calliphora Sp.
Warble fly myiasis: Caused by Hypoderma Sp.
Bot fly myiasis- Caused by Gastrophilus Sp.
Nasal myasis by Gastrophilus sp.
Gastrophilus sp.
4. It produces the holes and cavities. The animal
becomes excited and licking the affected part.
The maggot are found to move at the margin
of wound.
Clinical signs:
Oozing of fresh blood from the wound during
the movement of maggot and also penetrating
the healthy tissue damaging the capillary blood
vessel.
6. Treatment:
1. Pick up the maggots by artery
forceps.
2. Killing the maggots by packing with
insecticide like neguvon powder and
wash the wound with H2O2 solution to
remove the tissue debris.
3 Gauze packing with Tincture of iodine
on the 1st and 2nd day.
4. Antiseptic wash with 0.01%
Potassium permanganate solution/
Lugul's solution at alternate days.
7. 5. Injection: any antibiotic may be
Oxytetracycline (in case of dry cow and bull)
3-8mg/kg body daily for 5-6 days.
6. Injection: Penicillin (20,000-30,000 )IU/kg
body wt. i/m daily for 5 days.
7. Coconut oil with Neguvon powder at the
point of invasion may also be given.
8. Injection: Ivermectin-@ 0.2 mg/kg body
wt, s/c single dose.
9. Wash the wound with 0.01% Potassium
permanganate solution /Lugols solution
until final healing.
Injection: Ivermectin-
8. Control:
1.Fly control is the most important
factors.
2.keep the wound free from fly by
the application of fly repellant (oil
of turpentine)/organic
phosphorous compound like
neguvon powder with coconut oil
white Vaseline.
