Myiasis is the infestation of humans and other animals with fly larvae that feed on dead or living tissue. There are several types of myiasis including accidental, facultative, and obligatory. The main flies that cause myiasis belong to the families Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, and Oestridae. Myiasis can cause damage and disfigurement if tissues like the face are invaded, and larvae in body openings cause severe pain. However, maggot therapy uses fly larvae to remove dead tissue from wounds, as the maggots secrete enzymes that debride the wound and kill bacteria while avoiding healthy tissue.
