The Relationship Between Perfectionism And Maladaptive...
Introduction
The relationship between Perfectionism, Procrastination and Academic Performance
As said by (Brown, Elissa J; Heimberg, Richard G; Frost, Randy O; Makris, Gregory S et al, 1999),
Perfectionism has been defined as a dispositional tendency to set excessively high performance
standards and to then evaluate one s performance in an overly critical manner. . This investigation
looks at two types of perfectionism Adaptive, and Maladaptive Perfectionism. Adaptive perfectionism
is the inclination to set higher standards, participate in study more often, achieve better grades, and
emphasize more focus on academic importance in their life. Maladaptive Perfectionism is also a
predictor for studying more often, however research has found evidence that it has been linked with
higher anxiety, perceived difficulty and no increase in grades (Brown et al., 1999). These two types of
perfectionism are measured using 3 of the 6 subscales of Frost et al., (1990) s Multidimensional
Perfectionism Scale(MPS). A study looked at perfectionism, behaviour, cognition and affect in a
women s private liberal arts college gave participants a small range of questionnaires over 6 times in
the semester and looked at final grades to see if there was a significant correlation between any of the
variables. They found an association between CM perfectionism and anxiety about performance and
being overly critical of mistakes. CM was not associated with better grades, and the research
concluded it

Hippocampus Physical Activity
Physical Activity s Impact on the Hippocampus
Ana Arredondo The hippocampus is a miniature structure within the brain that plays a crucial role in
the limbic system. The limbic system, known for regulating emotions among other functions, is
located in the medial temporal lobe. The importance of the hippocampus relies on multiple aspects of
memory. When information is processed from the environment, the hippocampus manipulates it by
arranging and storing information from short term into long term memory. Once memories are stored
long term, they can be retrieved upon consciously. There appears to be a link between physical fitness
and the hippocampus. This link asserts that physical fitness positively affects memory, especially the
hippocampus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Introduction
Over the past 200 years, there is an emergence and existence of the working class in Canada which
has initiated the capitalist infrastructure (comprising the wage earners and the entrepreneurs) in
Canada and also involving the struggles of the Canadian workers to claim their necessities and
distress. Being the most difficult parts of the twentieth century, there had been very few people who
had not been affected by the Great Depression. The working class in Canadian Society had been
adversely affected during the time of Second World War and had even faced the repercussions of the
War. With ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She examines the consequences of these years for women in their homes and workplaces, and in the
dance halls and in the city court rooms. In her work, Katrina Srigley argues that young women were
central to the labour market and family economies of Depression era. In it she shows how factors such
as gender, race, class and marital status shaped women lives and influenced their job options, family
arrangements, and leisure activities. She talks about women who have been forgotten and whose life
experiences were left unstudied. She also highlights how women have learnt to compromise with the
joys and pains of their live.
Similarities and Differences between the books in relation to the experience of working class women
in Canada in the 1930 s.
As Chapter 1 of Katrina Srigley s Breadwinning Daughters addresses, Young working woman in a
depression, it shows how the young women of the working class in the Canadian society, have to
search for jobs in order to assist their families, and also the struggles that they have to go through to
get jobs and work according to it. At that time the scope for employment was scanty and the salaries
of the workers were too low for any family to survive with adequate means. The rate of
unemployment at that time has been 30% and the rate of unemployment for women has been much
higher. Even though the economy of Canada started suffering from the year 1929 to 1939, the
situation became too critical in 1933 and reached its

Dangerous Driving Habits
In today s world, many drivers have become complacent in the fact that the vehicle in which they are
operating can be a deadly weapon. A two ton hunk of metal flying down the freeway at speeds excess
of seventy miles an hour carries much potential for catastrophe.
Dangerous driving habits result in the death of thousands of people each year; however, by taking
steps to educate young drivers on dangerous habits behind the wheel; countless lives could be saved.
Distracting driving is a common occurrence with modern day drivers. Due to technological advances
making electronics so easy to use on the go, many find themselves spending more time looking at
their cell phone or navigation system than they do looking at the road. According to the NHTSA,
distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,477 people in 2015 alone. Texting and driving is a common
distraction, especially when it comes to the younger generation of drivers. Young drivers are oblivious
to the dangers of what seems like such a harmless act. Studies have shown that one 1 in 4 accidents
are caused by texting and driving. The number of people injured from distracted drivers in 2015 was
391,000. Over half of the nation s car accidents are a result of texting and driving. Whereas drinking
and driving may kill more people, the leading cause of car accidents is in fact texting and driving.
Another growing problem, that for years has been the major headline for traffic accidents that could
have very well been avoided

Beastie Boys Research Paper
When I first browsed through the different topics on which we were to write essays on, I was ecstatic
when I saw one about rock and roll. Once I started skimming through all the bands and artists I know
and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this essay. I firmly believe that I was born in the
wrong generation of music because I am a hardcore oldies junkie at heart. For this reason, the bands I
have selected are as follows: The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Johnny Cash, and The Righteous Brothers.
One of the main reasons why I adore the Beastie Boys like many others is because of their care free
energetic aura that they mix together with captivating sounds discretely concealing rhetorical puns.
What makes them especially unique to me is their transformation from a rowdy party punk band to a
mixture of pop, rock, and hip hop. In addition to a change musically, it was clear that their maturity
shifted alongside it. This eventually led the band to use its widespread popularity and ... Show more

Although you could say I am partly biased due to the fact that he was born and raised in the great state

example, probably the biggest reason why people loved Johnny Cash is because of his humble
personality which caused all of his songs to feel very down to earth which related to a multitude of
people from all classes. From experiencing many struggles in his own life, Cash was able to translate
his own emotions and thoughts into lyrics with rhythmic beats that attracted the average individual
who shared the same feelings. Even though I am not able to see him in concert since he passed away,
listening to his live recorded songs makes me realize that the rock and roll icon still lives through the

Gender Inequality And Decision Making
Inequality is experienced in various ways. Along with race and class inequalities, we have gender
inequalities. What creates and maintains significant gender inequality when it comes to decision
making? We could look back to1918; when Irish decision makers were made up solely of men. From
1919 to today we see a similar trend of gender inequality. It seems that when it comes to power and
decision making, women take the back seat. We can argue that men and woman are naturally good at
different things resulting to society creating this gender gap. Power and decision making belongs to
men, although ministerial positions do not require physical strength or abilities that a woman would
not have by nature, however woman are absent in taking part. Looking into where Ireland stands
compared to the rest of the world, we can get an idea of what contributes in maintaining gender
inequality when it comes to positions of power in political decision making. Social conflict can be
seen all over the world we live in: in sports, politics and normal social engagements. The main point I
have experienced with this theory would be the fact that I don t come from a rich, powerful, and
prestigious family, which in turn limits my chances of being successful. Karl Marx studied social
conflict His entire life and wanted to reduce social inequality. The social conflict theory can be
described as favoritism. Society tends to show favoritism to the prestigious members of that particular
society. Social

Long Lasting Friendship Every individual is expected to behave appropriately and collaborate with
other people with respect. It does not matter what country someone came from, nor what race he or
she might be. No one is born who is already a racist. Family background and social environment
where someone grew up are the biggest factors that influence people s attitude and behavior, and on
how they deal with a situation and make the best decision that they could. These factors also affect
how someone can deal and create a harmony and relationship with others despite of racial and
demographic differences. In the film Remember the Titans, directed by Boaz Yakin, it illustrates the
unity and teamwork of a football team regardless of every player s race. When differences are set
aside and people will work together, everything will work out as planned. This motion picture tells the
story of Coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington, his colleague Coach Bill Yoast, played
by Will Patton, the team s defensive end player Julius Campbell, played by Wood Harris, the
linebacker Gerry Bertier, played by Ryan Hurst, and the quarterback player Ronnie Sunshine Bass,
played by Kip Pardue. Within the story, the theme of football team players disregard their individual
differences to achieve their team s goal symbolizes that racism and discrimination do not hinder any
success in life, and a good camaraderie and

This paper will be a review of the provided case study around the success of Samsung in gaining
traction in the global mobile device marketplace. This is especially intriguing given their late start into
this area of the electronics marketplace. We will identify the key product streams of Samsung in this
space as their ranges of smartphones and mobile tablets along with how they are able to provide value
to Samsung customers. We will also seek to analyse the nature and design of Samsung s operations by
exploring and identifying the key processes and methods they employ that take a holistic approach
focusing on both their people and the products they produce. We will also discuss and review the key
processes and decisions Samsung perform in house and those they outsource along with the reasons
for each of these decisions. Along with how competitive priorities are managed by Samsung. The last
section will focus on process strategies that are most suited to Samsung in regard to a process and
product manufacturing environment and how a product will have differing manufacturing needs
during its product life cycle. The key product streams for Samsung in regard to the mobile device
global marketplace are its range of smartphones and mobile tablet devices it introduced in 2009 (Anon

agriscience educators. Project based learning is not new. It is a concept that agriscience education has
built its foundation on. Not every student thrives in a traditional four walled, 30 desk classroom with a

Students have different learning styles. For example, one student might have an auditory learning style
which means that he or she learns best by hearing. Another student might be a visual learner which
means they learn by seeing. For many who find success in agriscience, it is clear that they are tactile

Kyoto Protocol And The Protocol
As a basic description the Kyoto Protocol is a document, which legally binds all member countries
that are classified as developed to meet specific emission reduction targets. The protocol brings with it
several Commitment periods , which as the name suggests are periods of time by which member states
are bound to the protocol. The initial commitment period began in 2008 and ceased in 2012. The next
began in 2013 and will end in 2020. Currently there are 192 member states to the protocol. It has been
determined that developed countries are primarily responsible for the current elevated levels of
Greenhouse gases (GHG). The Kyoto Protocol puts heavier goals on the developed countries based on
the idea of differentiated but common responsibilities. The Protocol dictates that there are six primary
Greenhouse gases identified as contributing the most harm to the natural environment, these being:
Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Hydro fluorocarbons, Per fluorocarbons and Sulfur
Hexafluoride (U.S. EPA, N.D.)
Each nation has their own individual targets. The average target was a cut of roughly 5%, in
comparison to the levels in the atmosphere in 1990 and 2012 (The Guardian, 2012). Some countries
have a different approach to the protocol than others. An example of this is the United States, which is
yet to ratify the protocol and also happens to be the second largest total emitter (second to China) and
largest emitter per capita of greenhouse gases in the world (M.

A Picture Of The Kancamagus Highway
Painting a Picture of the Kancamagus Highway The mountains are known for cutting through the
landscape like glaciers. The Kancamagus Highway, or The Fearless One cuts through Lincoln, to
Conway, New Hampshire. Rich in history as well winding roads, and mammoth mountains are often
traveled by the fearless, and adventurous traveler. For some, they stumble upon this great beauty is
small and not appreciated, but for others the venture is a state of mind and continues to inspire long
after the visit is concluded. The Kancamagus Highway evokes the emotion of nostalgia in every
journey. Entering the area I first noticed the mountains, covered in rugs of green, gold, ember red, and
burning orange trees. The mountains were the spines of the land, holding together the whole
landscape. Off to a distance shining white pyramids could be seen. The tops of the mountains soared
up to the sky and to the heavens as to kiss the stars with the cold peaks. I was just a quiet observer of
there glorious range. They stood ghost like, and the only thing bigger then these slumbering giants
was my gaze when taking them in. As I turn from the outlook, leaving the booming mountains to my
back I notice the trees. Making up this glowing landscape were the burning leaves of the trees. The
canopy of color burned with high intensity. Each leaf was chattering in the wind making up faint
rustling, perhaps to keep the forests secret below. Nature s sympathy was conducting itself is a small
crescendo.

Socialisation Is Broken Down Into Two Key Areas Of Our Own...
Socialisation is a process that begins early in life which continues until death that develops an
individual to become an accepted part of his or her society. Numerous influences have a profound
impact upon individuals as they become socialised and a valuable member to a society. This
socialisation produces individuals who fulfil a role within society and the way the process is carried
out is subject to a variety of perspectives and ideas as to how we become who we are. These
perspectives focus on key themes such as whether society is based on a meritocracy or if it is a
capitalist state and people are fed a hidden curriculum to become part of the societal machine. The
entire socialisation process, regardless of perspective, produces these individuals for society but does
gender help or hinder success? Are we an equal society? Are we masters of our own destiny?
Socialisation is broken down into two key areas, primary and secondary. Primary socialisation focuses
on the early development of an individual and how the principal agent of primary socialisation is the
family. The individual is socialised to various societal norms as well as sharing the beliefs of the
family. As the individual grows and develops it is then exposed to other agents of socialisation and
this is known as secondary socialisation. During secondary socialisation the family will still play an
important role socialising the individual, however other agents such as education, the media, friends

Physics Of A Magritek Nmr Spectrometer
A Magritek NMR spectrometer along with MNOVA software was used to obtain the 1H NMR
spectrum by inserting an epi tube containing CDCl3 solvent with 60mg of dissolved 4 bromo N 4
(chlorophenyl)methylene] benzenamine from the purest sample obtained from the reaction using
molecular sieves into the spectrometer. Once the tube was inserted, proton protocol was selected with
parameters of CDCl3 as the solvent and it underwent a quickscan to acquire the spectrum. When the
scan was completed the spectrum was transferred to the MNOVA software for process, label,
integrate, and summarized the collected peaks. The IR spectrum was obtained using a different
machine since the Magritek NMR spectrometer used only produced 1H and 13C NMR spectrums
from samples placed in an epi tube. The IR spectrum was recorded using a Nicolet iS5 FT IR
spectrometer and OMNIC software. A small about of sample was placed on the ATR crystal and
pressure was applied to allow for the clearest spectrum possible. Infrared light was emitted by the
pressure device to penetrate the sample and produced the necessary peaks to identify the structure.
First, the background without the crystal being in contact with any pressure or sample was collected,
but not saved to the spectrum; hence, only the spectrum of the sample itself was displayed for the
sample s spectrum. When the actual sample s spectrum was collected, the peaks were found by the
OMNIC software by choosing the button find peaks. The only IR spectrum

Why Independence Is Important And How It Is Vital For The...
At MJLK, LLP we are further educating ourselves on Rule 101 of the AICPA Code of Professional
Conduct: Independence. To properly learn more about why independence is important and how it is
vital for the success of our accounting firm we analyzed the PwC Securities LLC case provided by
you. Our firm decided to focus on four key topics to hammer in the idea of independence: SEC
punishment, financial services, value added fee arrangements, and prohibited tax services.
1) SEC Punishment
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) acted in a timely and appropriate manner when
addressing the forbidden arrangements that were discovered from PwC and PwCS. Although the
punishments were deemed harsh, the repercussions were appropriate in this case. The harsh nature of
the punishments stemmed from the speculation of the SEC that PwC and Coopers Lybrand officials
were well aware that the fee arrangements that were made were banned. The AICPA and SEC govern
the rules regarding independence and conflicts of interest that may arise and these companies were
well aware of this governance and oversight prior to arranging the contingent fees. There is a distinct
breach of independence that is formed from the actions that were made, that deserves a harsh
punishment from the SEC. Without punishment from the SEC, there would be a lack of oversight with
controlling companies from making arrangements to compromise independence and properly integrate
internal controls.

when the number or persons enrolled in a health plan changes when the cost of the premium rises or

components that are used to assess health measures are morbidity and mortality. Morbidity is the
percentage of individuals diagnosed with certain conditions along with the number of hospitalizations.
Pregnancy has the potential cause other conditions that were not present before conceiving. Diabetes

of punctuations and why they are very important to modern day English. She shows how punctuations
were used correctly and incorrectly in older literature pieces. She gives a list of how to correctly use
commas, exclamation points, etc. She also references other punctuation/grammatical books. Unlike
many of Shakespeare s pieces, Eats, Shoots, and Leaves is against the punctuation Shakespeare used
in his writing.
Punctuation can change a sentence drastically. For example We do not come as minding to content
you, our true intent is. All for your delight we are not here. William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night
s Dream,Act V, scene i. This sentence has many punctuation errors. Shakespeare writes our true intent
is. All for your delight instead of putting a comma he uses a period, this makes the text dramatic, but
punctually incorrect.Since Shakespeare has authority in the literature community, he was idolized for
the punctuation error. Many people like Shakespeare deliberately defied punctuations and the writing
was a success. If you misplace a punctuation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Repression of Women in Euripides The Bacchae Essay
Repression of Women in Euripides The Bacchae
Many different interpretations can be derived from themes in Euripides s The Bacchae, most of which
assume that, in order to punish the women of Thebes for their impudence, the god Dionysus drove
them mad. However, there is evidence to believe that another factor played into this confrontation.
Because of the trend of male dominance in Greek society, women suffered in oppression and bore a
social stigma which led to their own vulnerability in becoming Dionysus s target. In essence, the
Thebian women practically fostered Dionysian insanity through their longing to rebel against social
norms. Their debilitating conditions as women prompted them to search for a way to ... Show more

In addition, further proof of women s inferiority is found in The Bacchae when King Pentheus
considers it shameful to disguise himself in women s clothing. Do I have to be demoted to a
woman?...A woman s costume? No, I won t; I can t (Bacchae 50 51). Pentheus s attitude in this
situation attests to the negativity women in Greece were faced with daily.
Under these acute circumstances, it is quite logical to infer that Thebian women were tremendously
dissatisfied with their position in the community. Those confined or isolated undoubtedly yearned for
an escape and found the stigma they bore too much to endure without entertaining a hope for freedom.
Perhaps this is why women were considered more prone to madness, emotional outbursts, and general
lack of control over themselves in Greek society (Source 10). Their hope to emerge from the the
shackles of sexism made the women vulnerable to these manifestations. Dionysus, angry at the
women for their demeaning gossip that challenged his own existence as a god, took advantage of their
vulnerability, seeing it as an opportunity to teach them a lesson that mortals must express due respect
for the immortal. I ve stung them with madness...The whole female seed of Thebes, I ve driven
frenzied out of house and home (Bacchae 4). The fact that he appeared in human form as andrognyous

Essay about Pagan Aspects in Beowulf
Scholars have argued about the religious stance of the epic poem Beowulf for centuries. Although the
man who put the poem down on paper, known as the Beowulf poet, was a devout Christian, the actual
poem itself is pagan. There are many clues in the epic that lead us to this conclusion such as the
numerous references to pagan symbols, namely the symbol of fate. Also, the central idea of revenge in
the poem opposes the ideas of Christianity. The poem also contains many breaches of the Ten
Commandments, which prove that the story is not Christian. However, the biggest clue to the
paganism of Beowulf is the scene that contains the burial of Beowulf and the building and idolization
of the tower, all of which go directly against the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no evidence anywhere that leads us to believe that poison is part of the Christian religion,
again emphasizing the paganism of the poem. Although all of these are important pagan symbols that
lead us to believe that this poem is not Christian, probably the most significant pagan symbol is that of
fate. The idea of fate ruled the lives of the pagans. Their belief was that you were born with a fate, and
there was nothing that could change this destiny. This idea becomes apparent in Beowulf several
times. As Beowulf is dying he refers to his leaving this earth as just part of his destiny when he says
that [m]y days have gone by as fate willed (Norton 1604). The idea of fate is called on again when
Beowulf asks Wiglaf to succeed him as king of the Geats. He tells Wiglaf that he would have given
the honor to his son, if he had one, but fate did not allow it. We see a reference to fate a final time
when Wiglaf speaks of Beowulf after his death. He offers that as much as Beowulf s people tried to
convince him to leave well enough alone, to allow the monster to live on forever, there was no
changing Beowulf s destiny. Beowulf s [f]ate, and his will, [w]ere too strong (Norton 1611). Fate is
clearly a non Christian idea, and its presence in the poem helps the case for Beowulf being a pagan
story.
A huge theme in Beowulf is the revenge ethic that all of the characters possess. During the time in

Psychology 300
Abstract This paper will touch over the aspects of Erik H Erickson s eight stages and how they affect
everyday lives from infancy to adulthood. The paper will go over the approximate ages and the
psychosocial crisis that they will eventually come to. Neglecting a child can lead to a cause of mental
negligence in the form of Arrested Development . Within different cultural backgrounds, this paper
will focus on the relationship of the infant and the mother, and the stresses and trauma they may or
may not have to discuss about a future development.
The biography of Erik Erikson Who exactly was Erik Erikson? Erik Erikson (1902 1994) was an art
teacher who became a psychoanalyst working with a person named, Anna Freud. Erikson was a
psychologist known for his psychological theory on human beings. Erikson trained as a Freudian
psychoanalyst but believed that social interaction was more important than Sigmund Freud s
psychosexual development. (Pearson 251). The word psych relates to the brain and the thinking into
the mind, and the word social relates to the way that the mind racks with those around us in the public.
So what is psychosocial really? Psychosocial is defined as the psychological development of the
individual in relation to his or her social environment.(Pearson 251) These eight stages (left column

my children. When rollerblading wear safety gear because you can get hurt, it s not a race just go as
fast as you are comfortable with, and pay attention for obstructions in the road; gravel, big rocks, etc.
If a person follows these three lessons then they should be set to rollerblade. First it is very important
to wear safety gear while rollerblading because you can get hurt. If proper precautions are taken, yes
you might still get hurt, but it won t be as bad as it could be if you were not wearing safety gear. For

Excessive absences often coincide with poor performance, high turnover rates and low organisational
commitment.
What is an acceptable level of absence?
The diversity and nature of organisations means that there is no optimum or standard level of
acceptable workplace absence that is applicable. Each organisation is best placed to determine when
workplace absence rates require investigation and management. If an organisations thinks that there is
a problem, then it is worth investigating. It is important that an organisation looks for trends and
patterns. An acceptable average absence rate may mask trends and patterns in certain divisions or
individuals.
Causes of Workplace Absence
Understanding the cause of workplace absence is not always straightforward absence behaviour is
variable and complex. For the same individual, absence is likely to have different causes at different
times and in different contexts. In broad terms, there are three major influences on attendance: Illness
or injury Non work related factors (e.g. emergencies) Motivation Attitudes and behaviours associated
with a lack of motivation to attend the workplace (e.g. low job satisfaction, non commitment to the
organisation, workplace tension)
Illness and injury does not always arise from the individual s personal circumstances, but can also be
the result of work factors. For example,

Ellen Grigsby 4 Types Of Power Analysis
Ellen Grigsby defines power as an ability to influence an event or outcome that allows the agent
exercising power to achieve an objective and/or influence another agent to act in a manner in which
the second agent, on its own, would not choose to act. Power is used in nearly every facet of life, not
only politics. Power can be inactive, also known as latent. This would or active, also known as
manifest. There are four different types of power including force, persuasion, manipulation, and
exchange. Each of these types have their own ethical grey areas; however, on a scale of moral to
immoral, persuasion and manipulation, respectively, would fall on either ends of the spectrum.
Grigsby lists the first type of power as force, defining it as, the exercise of power by physical means.
This type is most often what people think of as exercise of power. This is because force is a relatively
cheap. Force is not limited to physical violence; it can include physical sabotage as well. Physical
sabotage can take the form of boycotts, blockades, and peaceful protests. ... Show more content on

of power. Unfortunately, it is incredibly difficult to pinpoint manipulation as its main purpose to

Twenty years to life in prison, this is what I woke up to one cold December morning. I had been

eggs, bacon, waffles, and grits. It would have been perfect, just to have a family meal. I had arrived at

video had been encrypted with a password, and without the password, the video could not be watched.
The judge ruled that this evidence was irrelevant until it could be used. The judge asked if there was

The Tyranny Of The Prevailing Opinion And Feeling
The existence of the tyranny of the prevailing opinion and feeling (Mill 4) also constrains an
individual s personal liberty. In On Liberty, Mill wrote that the mass do not now take their opinions
from the mass do not now take their opinions from dignitaries in Church or State, from ostensible
leaders, or from books. Their thinking is done for them by men much like themselves (63). Mill
believed that the majority in the society tends to impose their own ideas and practices onto other
people. This will eventually cause the minority opinion to be completely omitted and silenced.
Moreover, the majority is not guaranteed to be correct, and could not be falsified as result of no open
discussion or debate. This lack of discussion could only fetter and hinder the development and the
formation of character. Mill wrote However unwilling a person who has a strong opinion may admit
the possibility that his opinion may be false, he ought to be moved by the consideration that, however
true it may be, if it is not fully, frequently discussed, it will be held as a dead dogma, not a living (34).
In a society where dead dogmas are prevalent, no individuals can obtain complete freedom. This is
because no one will have the courage to challenge and circulate new and original ideas that can help
them achieve liberty. The members of the society will live in a world where no one will construct new
ideas, and no one will discover and spread the ultimate truths. Instead, the people will cling

Machiavelli, Hobbes, And Locke
Cindy Kim Godrej Leslie Cox November 24, 2014 Paper 2 By looking at the readings of Machiavelli,
Hobbes, and Locke, there are a few distinctions between how the modern thinkers viewed politics
versus the way the ancient thinkers believed politics should be. There are many topics both modern
and ancient thinkers discuss in their writings, such as the purpose of politics, the science of politics,
human nature, as well as the ideal regime. By doing so, these thinkers views on political topics such as
these illuminate how they thought politics should work and who should be able to participate in the
activity of politics. Purpose of Politics To begin with, an important theme to discuss is what the
modern thinkers believe is the purpose of politics. Machiavelli believes that the purpose of politics is
the glory and stability of the state, in which we will refer to as statecraft . Hobbes believes in the
security of the population to be the purpose of politics. Hobbes wants ensure that the people s lives are
secure and that there is no opportunity of leaving them vulnerable to each other. Locke wants to
protect certain natural rights: life, liberty and property. However, when Locke discusses in protecting
and engaging people into politics who own property, it excludes the people who do not harbor
property; which, at that time, was a majority of the population (234). Hobbes and Machiavelli are both
interested in imposing order and avoid chaos. On the other hand,

A Narrative Of An Effective Narrative Is The Point Of View
A compelling historical narrative must not only be an honest representation of events but also presents
diverse details about them. One of the techniques used by authors in creating an effective narrative is
the point of view. The most transparent point of view would be the third person narration. In this kind
of narration, the narrator is knowledgeable about every character s opinions. He can describe their
actions and relay what is going through their minds. In contrast, first person narrative uncovers the
emotions and opinions of a specific character in the story. The perspective comes from and is focused
on a single character. Although first person narration can be a powerful technique if used properly, it is
not always effective. My goal in this paper is to expound that a first person narration brings about
some complications in the viewpoint and reliability of a historical narrative. First person narration
limits the standpoint of the story. Since first person narrative only focuses on one character, the
characterization of others are disregarded. For instance, Prince relates a story about his master s
daughter and talked about how he often [gets] drunk, and then he would get in a fury with his
daughter, and beat her till she was not fit to be seen (13). The experience of the daughter is only seen
through the observations of Prince. Her description of her own experiences is not fully discussed.
Moreover, the readers are also not presented about what the other

Principles Of The Immaculate Conception
Immaculate Conception
Raphaella Henson Vendrell
Ms.O Connor
P5 Orange
I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this
assignment.
The Immaculate Conception is Mary s birth without stain of original sin. The word Immaculate itself
means without stain . Mary was protected by God s grace. From the moment she was born, she was in
a state of sanctifying grace and free from the corrupt effects from original sin. The angel Gabriel said
Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you (Luke 1:28). This meaning that Mary was born with the gifts
of grace by God. She is also preserved by original sin and the Lord is guiding her and she is protected
by God. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Father blessed Mary more than
anyone else he has created. He chose Mary to be the basis of the world and to be holy and not blamed
for the faults of the world. The splendor of an entirely unique holiness by which Mary is enriched
from the first instant of her conception comes wholly from Christ. She is redeemed, in a more exalted
fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son (CCC,492). This meaning that Mary was saved in superior
fashion and it was because she was going to be the mother of our savior Jesus Christ. Mary is also
filled with holiness which she first was blessed with from God when she was born. The Blessed Virgin
Mary was the second person to be created and born immaculate. Eve was the first person

Catastrophe Bonds
Catastrophe Bonds

The trouble with Catastrophe Bonds
The article presents the difficulties insurance companies face when they are issuing catastrophe bonds.
Do they efficiently hedge against large scale disasters?
It is very difficult hedging against catastrophic losses. Japan s March earthquake, tsunami and nuclear
disaster threat could cost the insurance industry between $21 and $34 billion.
The catastrophe bonds are not helping much the insurance companies, although they were designed to
do so. Catastrophe bonds have limits on type and location of the disaster they will cover. A large
number of catastrophe bonds covered the losses only in Tokyo, although the actual losses occurred far
away from there.
In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering all the risk stated above, the insurance companies are still issuing the catastrophe bonds.
In my point of view the issuance of catastrophe bonds by insurers is a successful financial hedging
technique. Even though the investors are having large returns on risk linked securities and only a small
number of them lost their principle, the purpose of these instruments is to provide coverage for highly
improbable risks. The benefit of these bonds is that they allow the insurance companies to secure a
layer of coverage for their worst case scenarios, which may not be available if traditional reinsurance
is used.
Catastrophe bonds help to diversify the protection capacity and supplement traditional reinsurance.
The insurance companies are transferring major risks and thus have more capital to underwrite new
business, therefore using the bonds to diversify their sourcing of reinsurance.
The issuance of risk linked securities is a great strategy in supplementing traditional reinsurance, but
these bonds still need to prove their value in the long run.
In conclusion, I would not agree with Mr. Niklaus Hilti s words: from the perspective of insurers and
reinsurers, traditional reinsurance is clearly the better hedge. The catastrophe bonds are carefully
designed to provide insurers and reinsurers the capital they need for

The Development Of Computer Development
THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTER FROM 1980 TO 2014
The history of computer development is often referred to in reference to the different generations of
figuring out/ calculating devices. A generation refers to the state of improvement in the product
development process. This term is also used in the different advancements of new computer
technology. With each new generation, the circuitry has gotten smaller and more advanced than the
previous generation before it. As a result of the making something much smaller, speed, power, and
computer memory have proportionally increased. New discoveries are constantly being developed that
affect the way we live, work and play. Each generation of computers is seen as the major
technological development that basically changed the way computers operate, resulting in more and
more smaller, cheaper, powerful, efficient and reliable devices
As for now, there are four generations of computer which is first generation, second generation, third
generation, and fourth generation. The first generation begins from year 1940 to 1956 using vacuum
tube. For the second generation was from year 1956 to 1963 using transistor. Later integrated circuit
was produced in the year 1965 to 1971. By the year 1971 until present the microprocessors is being
used.

Symbolism In The Monkey s Paw By W. Jacobs
The Monkey s Paw by W. W. Jacobs, is a tale of tragic incidences that are due to the magic of the
monkey s paw, but was it really magic or simply coincidence? When reading, it becomes apparent that
the monkey s paw is magical; however, when closely reading, it seems that it may have been in their
minds all along. The disastrous events of The Monkey s Paw are coincidental and make use of the
placebo effect in the symbolism of characters and objects. Chess is a mind bending game that
challenges the wits of players as pieces are put in fate s grasp; so it is no coincidence that W. W.
Jacobs uses it to symbolize the risky decisions made throughout the story. Jacobs begins by noting that
father and son were at chess and that father ...possessed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From this quote we learn that the whites were playing a game of chess that was so risky that it spurred
Mrs. White to intervene, thus involving all three of the Whites in the situation to come. It is also stated
that the father possessed ideas of radical changes, i.e. the wishes, that would put his prized possession,
his son, into unnecessary perils so he could get what he wants. An example of could be when Mr.
White wishes for two hundred pounds which later came with the believed consequence of his son s
death. However, this perceived repercussion is a play of the mind and this time, the house is the
chessboard. When Mr. White loses the first game his wife states that perhaps he ll win the next one
which was to begin only two sentences later. Similarly like the monkey s paw, chess is in the mind.
The placebo effect can fool even the brightest at the greatest of ease and The Monkey s Paw makes
use of its persuasive delusions. First of all, when Mr. White makes his first wish, he believes that the
paw moves in his hand, when in reality no one saw it and he is an old man with arthritis that could
have been exacerbated by his drinking. Another key point throughout the story is that multiple times

Strengths And Weaknesss Of Case Studies
X. DATAANALYSIS
As the information is collected, researchers strive to make sense of their data. Generally, researchers
interpret their data in one of two ways: holistically or through coding. Holistic analysis does not
attempt to break the evidence into parts, but rather to draw conclusions based on the text as a whole.
Flower and Hayes (1981), for example, make inferences from entire sections of their students
protocols, rather than searching through the transcripts to look for isolatable characteristics.
However, composition researchers commonly interpret their data by coding that is by systematically
searching data to identify and/or categorize specific observable actions or characteristics. These
observable actions then become the key ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this section, we comment on two key issues. To read the commentaries, choose any of the items

10.3. Strengths and Weaknesses of Case Studies
Most case study advocates point out that case studies produce much more detailed information than
what is available through a statistical analysis. Advocates will also hold that while statistical methods
might be able to deal with situations where behavior is homogeneous and routine, case studies are
needed to deal with creativity, innovation, and context. Detractors argue that case studies are difficult
to generalize because of inherent subjectivity and because they are based on qualitative subjective
data, generalizable only to a particular context.
10.3.1Strengths Flexibility
The case study has the potential to engage participant in the research process. This is both a political
and epistemological points. It singles a potential shift in the power base of who controls knowledge
and recognizes the importance of co construction perceived reality through the relationship and joint
understandings we create in the field. It also provides an opportunity for researchers to take a self
reflexive approach to understanding the case and

Jason Bivins Jazz And Religion Summary
In his eye opening book, Jason Bivins analyzes the connection that jazz music has with American
religion. Not many scholars have decided to address this area religious studies.
He conducts interviews with multiple musicians, in an effort to grasp what level of impact that their
religion or spirituality had on their work.
He pushes for the need of religious experience to understanding jazz, while, at the same time, attempts
to show that jazz can serve as a catalyst for fresh interpretations to American religion.
Scholars of religion have begun to place a greater emphasis on the senses, particularly vision and
hearing
He lays out his case in eight chapters, which equally divide the book s main content into two parts.
He describes his own book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, he begins to pivot to the influence of the other faiths. For example, Islam gave black jazz
artists another way to find their subjectivity. Much of the Islamic jazz artists can be attributed to the
Ahmadiyya movement. Their groups gave black jazz artists a feeling of dignity and respect.
In chapter 3, he focuses on how jazz is able to create narratives for American religion. He said that the
retellings of jazz employ strategies of evasion designed to counter attempts to control and commodify
jazz and religion alike... (Bivins, pg. 84).
In chapter four, he focuses on jazz communitarianism. Even in the participation of counter institutions,
there is an American desire to find freedom and resist the norms. There were numerous organizations
such as the Union of God s Musicians in Artists Ascension (UGMAA) and the Association for the
Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) who were able to foster growth in young musicians and
give them tools to better succeed in life. These functions were very similar to the functions of a church

Was Rockefeller A Robber Baron Argumentative Essay
Jameson Stahl

Labore
Argumentative Paper
John D. Rockefeller, at his peak was said to have had a total net worth of around $341 billion in USD
today. Rockefeller was at the head of Americas first monopoly. His oil company, Standard Oil,
controlled 90% of the entire US oil industry. Rockefeller believed that he was doing the right thing,
but others did not perceive him the same way. John D. Rockefeller was indeed a robber baron.
Rockefeller was a robber baron because the ways in which he acquired his vast wealth was done so
unethically. First, he bought out all of the other competing oil companies so Standard Oil could have
control over the entire market. This was not good because now Standard Oil was able to set the new
standards for the market, including quality of the product and price. Critics accused Rockefeller of
engaging in unethical practices, such as predatory pricing and colluding with railroads to eliminate his
competitors, in order to gain a monopoly in the industry(History.com, 2010). Also, ... Show more

acquisitions. By buying other companies, Rockefeller made his company much more efficient by
eliminating the middleman of the oil refining process, therefore having all steps to the process be
unified under one corporation. Also, Rockefeller donated his money to various causes to benefit the
community. He donated to a number of different universities, medical institutions, and education
boards. The list includes University of Chicago, Rockefeller institute for medical research, General
education board, and the Rockefeller sanitary commission. He made possible the founding of the
University of Chicago in 1892, and by the time of his death he had given it some $35

The Importance Of Taxing IRS
When it comes to taxes, people often make mistakes which are quite normal. However, when these
mistakes lead the IRS to perform audits of your business or personal assets, repaying them can be a

from doing so, but if your taxes aren t paid in full the IRS will charge a penalty. No need to worry,
however, because there are different ways for you to resolve this issue. To learn how to resolve your
tax debt, read the guide below and begin paying the IRS the money you owe Uncle Sam.
The best solution should always be to pay off the past dues as quickly as possible as the penalties and

Hardship if they are forced to pay their taxes by the due date. It will apply to the tax shown on your

Undue hardship means, more than being in inconvenience according to the IRs. You must give proof
that if you were to pay your taxes on the due date you would suffer a significant financial loss. For
example, if you have to sell your property at a loss in order for you to pay your taxes that would be
considered as Undue hardship . You must always give valid reasons for your extensions and provide a
detailed explanation. If your extension is approved by the IRS then they will give you up to six more

What Is The Theme Of Courage By Anne Sexton
Karely Colon
Period 5
April 25, 2015
Poem Analysis Courage is a feeling, perhaps everyone has felt before, even if it wasn t acknowledged.
People refer to courage as an act of stepping out ones comfort zone, putting any fear a person may
have to the side and overcoming something that needs everything inside to do. Anne Sexton, a
confessional poet depicts courage in all forms in her poem Courage. Sexton was very open and shared
painful details in her poems. Some are against it and others would appreciate her work. Life
necessitates courage to overcome the challenges of everyday living. This poem gradually leads to an
acceptance of death after a life of courageous moments. Sexton helps one visualize something as small
as a baby, who is learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This stanza is a transition into the life of someone who is at first suffering from great despair. Sexton
describes it as, Getting a transfusion from the fire / picking the scabs off your heart / then wringing it
out like a sock (29 31). Transfusion from fire, can be interpreted as the hurt a person feels when one is
suffering. Lines 32 37 then transition to someone trying to relieve their sorrow and mend their scars. It
takes courage from one to move on from a heart wrecking event. Sexton then writes, It woke to the
wings of the roses / and was transformed (37 38). A person shows courage when they can take their
sorrow and pain and turn it into something greater, possibly a motivation or a way to help

  • 2. The Relationship Between Perfectionism And Maladaptive... Introduction The relationship between Perfectionism, Procrastination and Academic Performance As said by (Brown, Elissa J; Heimberg, Richard G; Frost, Randy O; Makris, Gregory S et al, 1999), Perfectionism has been defined as a dispositional tendency to set excessively high performance standards and to then evaluate one s performance in an overly critical manner. . This investigation looks at two types of perfectionism Adaptive, and Maladaptive Perfectionism. Adaptive perfectionism is the inclination to set higher standards, participate in study more often, achieve better grades, and emphasize more focus on academic importance in their life. Maladaptive Perfectionism is also a predictor for studying more often, however research has found evidence that it has been linked with higher anxiety, perceived difficulty and no increase in grades (Brown et al., 1999). These two types of perfectionism are measured using 3 of the 6 subscales of Frost et al., (1990) s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale(MPS). A study looked at perfectionism, behaviour, cognition and affect in a women s private liberal arts college gave participants a small range of questionnaires over 6 times in the semester and looked at final grades to see if there was a significant correlation between any of the variables. They found an association between CM perfectionism and anxiety about performance and being overly critical of mistakes. CM was not associated with better grades, and the research concluded it ... The limbic system, known for regulating emotions among other functions, is located in the medial temporal lobe. The importance of the hippocampus relies on multiple aspects of memory. When information is processed from the environment, the hippocampus manipulates it by arranging and storing information from short term into long term memory. Once memories are stored long term, they can be retrieved upon consciously. There appears to be a link between physical fitness and the hippocampus. The rate of unemployment at that time has been 30% and the rate of unemployment for women has been much higher. • 5. Dangerous Driving Habits In today s world, many drivers have become complacent in the fact that the vehicle in which they are operating can be a deadly weapon. A two ton hunk of metal flying down the freeway at speeds excess of seventy miles an hour carries much potential for catastrophe. Dangerous driving habits result in the death of thousands of people each year; however, by taking steps to educate young drivers on dangerous habits behind the wheel; countless lives could be saved. Distracting driving is a common occurrence with modern day drivers. Due to technological advances making electronics so easy to use on the go, many find themselves spending more time looking at their cell phone or navigation system than they do looking at the road. According to the NHTSA, distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,477 people in 2015 alone. Texting and driving is a common distraction, especially when it comes to the younger generation of drivers. Once I started skimming through all the bands and artists I know and love, I knew there would be no problem writing this essay. I firmly believe that I was born in the wrong generation of music because I am a hardcore oldies junkie at heart. For this reason, the bands I have selected are as follows: The Beastie Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and The Righteous Brothers. One of the main reasons why I adore the Beastie Boys like many others is because of their care free energetic aura that they mix together with captivating sounds discretely concealing rhetorical puns. What makes them especially unique to me is their transformation from a rowdy party punk band to a mixture of pop, rock, and hip hop. In addition to a change musically, it was clear that their maturity shifted alongside it. This eventually led the band to use its widespread popularity and ... • 8. Gender Inequality And Decision Making Inequality is experienced in various ways. Along with race and class inequalities, we have gender inequalities. What creates and maintains significant gender inequality when it comes to decision making? We could look back to1918; when Irish decision makers were made up solely of men. From 1919 to today we see a similar trend of gender inequality. It seems that when it comes to power and decision making, women take the back seat. We can argue that men and woman are naturally good at different things resulting to society creating this gender gap. Power and decision making belongs to men, although ministerial positions do not require physical strength or abilities that a woman would not have by nature, however woman are absent in taking part. Looking into where Ireland stands compared to the rest of the world, we can get an idea of what contributes in maintaining gender inequality when it comes to positions of power in political decision making. Social conflict can be seen all over the world we live in: in sports, politics and normal social engagements. The main point I have experienced with this theory would be the fact that I don t come from a rich, powerful, and prestigious family, which in turn limits my chances of being successful. Karl Marx studied social conflict His entire life and wanted to reduce social inequality. The social conflict theory can be described as favoritism. Kyoto Protocol And The Protocol As a basic description the Kyoto Protocol is a document, which legally binds all member countries that are classified as developed to meet specific emission reduction targets. The initial commitment period began in 2008 and ceased in 2012. The next began in 2013 and will end in 2020. Currently there are 192 member states to the protocol. It has been determined that developed countries are primarily responsible for the current elevated levels of Greenhouse gases (GHG). The Kyoto Protocol puts heavier goals on the developed countries based on the idea of differentiated but common responsibilities. The Protocol dictates that there are six primary Greenhouse gases identified as contributing the most harm to the natural environment, these being: Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrous Oxide, Hydro fluorocarbons, Per fluorocarbons and Sulfur Hexafluoride (U.S. EPA, N.D.) Each nation has their own individual targets. The average target was a cut of roughly 5%, in comparison to the levels in the atmosphere in 1990 and 2012 (The Guardian, 2012). Socialisation is a process that begins early in life which continues until death that develops an individual to become an accepted part of his or her society. Numerous influences have a profound impact upon individuals as they become socialised and a valuable member to a society. This socialisation produces individuals who fulfil a role within society and the way the process is carried out is subject to a variety of perspectives and ideas as to how we become who we are. These perspectives focus on key themes such as whether society is based on a meritocracy or if it is a capitalist state and people are fed a hidden curriculum to become part of the societal machine. The entire socialisation process, regardless of perspective, produces these individuals for society but does gender help or hinder success? Are we an equal society? Are we masters of our own destiny? Socialisation is broken down into two key areas, primary and secondary. Primary socialisation focuses on the early development of an individual and how the principal agent of primary socialisation is the family. The individual is socialised to various societal norms as well as sharing the beliefs of the family. As the individual grows and develops it is then exposed to other agents of socialisation and this is known as secondary socialisation. Once the tube was inserted, proton protocol was selected with parameters of CDCl3 as the solvent and it underwent a quickscan to acquire the spectrum. When the scan was completed the spectrum was transferred to the MNOVA software for process, label, integrate, and summarized the collected peaks. The IR spectrum was obtained using a different machine since the Magritek NMR spectrometer used only produced 1H and 13C NMR spectrums from samples placed in an epi tube. The IR spectrum was recorded using a Nicolet iS5 FT IR spectrometer and OMNIC software. A small about of sample was placed on the ATR crystal and pressure was applied to allow for the clearest spectrum possible. Infrared light was emitted by the pressure device to penetrate the sample and produced the necessary peaks to identify the structure. First, the background without the crystal being in contact with any pressure or sample was collected, but not saved to the spectrum; hence, only the spectrum of the sample itself was displayed for the sample s spectrum. To properly learn more about why independence is important and how it is vital for the success of our accounting firm we analyzed the PwC Securities LLC case provided by you. Our firm decided to focus on four key topics to hammer in the idea of independence: SEC punishment, financial services, value added fee arrangements, and prohibited tax services. 1) SEC Punishment The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) acted in a timely and appropriate manner when addressing the forbidden arrangements that were discovered from PwC and PwCS. Although the punishments were deemed harsh, the repercussions were appropriate in this case. The harsh nature of the punishments stemmed from the speculation of the SEC that PwC and Coopers Lybrand officials were well aware that the fee arrangements that were made were banned. The AICPA and SEC govern the rules regarding independence and conflicts of interest that may arise and these companies were well aware of this governance and oversight prior to arranging the contingent fees. There is a distinct breach of independence that is formed from the actions that were made, that deserves a harsh punishment from the SEC. Repression of Women in Euripides The Bacchae Essay Repression of Women in Euripides The Bacchae Many different interpretations can be derived from themes in Euripides s The Bacchae, most of which assume that, in order to punish the women of Thebes for their impudence, the god Dionysus drove them mad. However, there is evidence to believe that another factor played into this confrontation. Because of the trend of male dominance in Greek society, women suffered in oppression and bore a social stigma which led to their own vulnerability in becoming Dionysus s target. In essence, the Thebian women practically fostered Dionysian insanity through their longing to rebel against social norms. Do I have to be demoted to a woman?...A woman s costume? No, I won t; I can t (Bacchae 50 51). Pentheus s attitude in this situation attests to the negativity women in Greece were faced with daily. Under these acute circumstances, it is quite logical to infer that Thebian women were tremendously dissatisfied with their position in the community. Those confined or isolated undoubtedly yearned for an escape and found the stigma they bore too much to endure without entertaining a hope for freedom. Perhaps this is why women were considered more prone to madness, emotional outbursts, and general lack of control over themselves in Greek society (Source 10). Their hope to emerge from the the shackles of sexism made the women vulnerable to these manifestations. Dionysus, angry at the women for their demeaning gossip that challenged his own existence as a god, took advantage of their vulnerability, seeing it as an opportunity to teach them a lesson that mortals must express due respect for the immortal. Also, the central idea of revenge in the poem opposes the ideas of Christianity. The poem also contains many breaches of the Ten Commandments, which prove that the story is not Christian. However, the biggest clue to the paganism of Beowulf is the scene that contains the burial of Beowulf and the building and idolization of the tower, all of which go directly against the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is no evidence anywhere that leads us to believe that poison is part of the Christian religion, again emphasizing the paganism of the poem. Although all of these are important pagan symbols that lead us to believe that this poem is not Christian, probably the most significant pagan symbol is that of fate. The idea of fate ruled the lives of the pagans. Their belief was that you were born with a fate, and there was nothing that could change this destiny. This idea becomes apparent in Beowulf several times. As Beowulf is dying he refers to his leaving this earth as just part of his destiny when he says that [m]y days have gone by as fate willed (Norton 1604). The idea of fate is called on again when Beowulf asks Wiglaf to succeed him as king of the Geats. He tells Wiglaf that he would have given the honor to his son, if he had one, but fate did not allow it. We see a reference to fate a final time when Wiglaf speaks of Beowulf after his death. He offers that as much as Beowulf s people tried to convince him to leave well enough alone, to allow the monster to live on forever, there was no changing Beowulf s destiny. Beowulf s [f]ate, and his will, [w]ere too strong (Norton 1611). Fate is clearly a non Christian idea, and its presence in the poem helps the case for Beowulf being a pagan story. In On Liberty, Mill wrote that the mass do not now take their opinions from the mass do not now take their opinions from dignitaries in Church or State, from ostensible leaders, or from books. Their thinking is done for them by men much like themselves (63). Mill believed that the majority in the society tends to impose their own ideas and practices onto other people. This will eventually cause the minority opinion to be completely omitted and silenced. Moreover, the majority is not guaranteed to be correct, and could not be falsified as result of no open discussion or debate. This lack of discussion could only fetter and hinder the development and the formation of character. Mill wrote However unwilling a person who has a strong opinion may admit the possibility that his opinion may be false, he ought to be moved by the consideration that, however true it may be, if it is not fully, frequently discussed, it will be held as a dead dogma, not a living (34). In a society where dead dogmas are prevalent, no individuals can obtain complete freedom. This is because no one will have the courage to challenge and circulate new and original ideas that can help them achieve liberty. Machiavelli, Hobbes, And Locke Cindy Kim Godrej Leslie Cox November 24, 2014 Paper 2 By looking at the readings of Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Locke, there are a few distinctions between how the modern thinkers viewed politics versus the way the ancient thinkers believed politics should be. There are many topics both modern and ancient thinkers discuss in their writings, such as the purpose of politics, the science of politics, human nature, as well as the ideal regime. By doing so, these thinkers views on political topics such as these illuminate how they thought politics should work and who should be able to participate in the activity of politics. Purpose of Politics To begin with, an important theme to discuss is what the modern thinkers believe is the purpose of politics. Machiavelli believes that the purpose of politics is the glory and stability of the state, in which we will refer to as statecraft . Hobbes believes in the security of the population to be the purpose of politics. Hobbes wants ensure that the people s lives are secure and that there is no opportunity of leaving them vulnerable to each other. Locke wants to protect certain natural rights: life, liberty and property. • 37. A Narrative Of An Effective Narrative Is The Point Of View A compelling historical narrative must not only be an honest representation of events but also presents diverse details about them. One of the techniques used by authors in creating an effective narrative is the point of view. The most transparent point of view would be the third person narration. In this kind of narration, the narrator is knowledgeable about every character s opinions. He can describe their actions and relay what is going through their minds. In contrast, first person narrative uncovers the emotions and opinions of a specific character in the story. The perspective comes from and is focused on a single character. Although first person narration can be a powerful technique if used properly, it is not always effective. My goal in this paper is to expound that a first person narration brings about some complications in the viewpoint and reliability of a historical narrative. First person narration limits the standpoint of the story. Since first person narrative only focuses on one character, the characterization of others are disregarded. For instance, Prince relates a story about his master s daughter and talked about how he often [gets] drunk, and then he would get in a fury with his daughter, and beat her till she was not fit to be seen (13). Principles Of The Immaculate Conception Immaculate Conception Raphaella Henson Vendrell Ms.O Connor P5 Orange I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment. The Immaculate Conception is Mary s birth without stain of original sin. The word Immaculate itself means without stain . Mary was protected by God s grace. From the moment she was born, she was in a state of sanctifying grace and free from the corrupt effects from original sin. The angel Gabriel said Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you (Luke 1:28). This meaning that Mary was born with the gifts of grace by God. She is also preserved by original sin and the Lord is guiding her and she is protected by God. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Father blessed Mary more than anyone else he has created. He chose Mary to be the basis of the world and to be holy and not blamed for the faults of the world. The splendor of an entirely unique holiness by which Mary is enriched from the first instant of her conception comes wholly from Christ. She is redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son (CCC,492). This meaning that Mary was saved in superior fashion and it was because she was going to be the mother of our savior Jesus Christ. In my point of view the issuance of catastrophe bonds by insurers is a successful financial hedging technique. Even though the investors are having large returns on risk linked securities and only a small number of them lost their principle, the purpose of these instruments is to provide coverage for highly improbable risks. The benefit of these bonds is that they allow the insurance companies to secure a layer of coverage for their worst case scenarios, which may not be available if traditional reinsurance is used. Catastrophe bonds help to diversify the protection capacity and supplement traditional reinsurance. The insurance companies are transferring major risks and thus have more capital to underwrite new business, therefore using the bonds to diversify their sourcing of reinsurance. The issuance of risk linked securities is a great strategy in supplementing traditional reinsurance, but these bonds still need to prove their value in the long run.
