Level of Performance of Fourth Year Public Highschool...
INTRODUCTION
The Philippine educational setting is bilingual in nature, thus the level of performance of public
high school students towards English proficiency in learning creates its possibility to be
monolingual by using the considered foreign language as the standard language in teaching is
impossible yet can be proven by theoretical studies to be conducted. Many accounts of
constitutional laws, studies and facts regarding this issue of using the English language in teaching
academic subjects such as science and technology can well explain its effective usage in the world
of language education namely: the English language proficiency public students show, the legal
basis it holds, the level of performance the public high school ... Show more content on

Using the level of performance shown by public high school students is a logical proof to be
sustained in this field of analysis. Furthermore, to justify this study, another arising credential is the
determined number of students passing the examinations. The fourth year public high school
students passing the institute of higher learning gives a significant resolution to the argument rose
upon by using English language in the field of teaching. The passing percentage of students coming
from public schools provides us with enough basis. College entrance exams in prominent
universities here in the Philippines are mostly presented in full English text, except for the UPCAT
exam. The number of students passing entrance examinations as presented facts is further
established through accumulating data, which serves as its foundation.
Finally, the process of publishing books can concretize these justifications. The revision of
textbooks and workbooks being used in teaching science and math is done due to the fast
proliferation of concepts used, which are usually in the English language. The standard language
used in any publication of science and mathematics textbooks and workbooks are English. This
does make it possible of stating English as the standard language of education (Otanes, 1988, pp.84
85). In publishing books, the process of using English is but a firm stand, giving merit to English

Analysis Of Domestic Unrest And Jennifer Johnston s...
One of the critics who discuss Johnston s work is Laila Khan. In her essay, Domestic Unrest
and Jennifer Johnston s Fiction of the Irish Trouble, Khan focuses on how Johnston s novels do
not concentrate on the violence happening in the nation, but instead how she uses Irish domestic
fictions to explored alternative approaches to friendships and family bonds that could exist
when women reject nationalist narratives (2). Khan s essay analyzes these trends in
relationship to the mothers in Johnston s The Railway Station Man and Shadows on Our Skin.
While women often are representative of Ireland in Irish fictions, Khan notes that Johnston
purposely creates mothers that refuses to act as mouthpieces for national rhetoric in the home,
choosing instead passivity or alternative kinships as what they see as the only escape (3). An
example of this from Shadows on Our Skin is the way the Mrs. Logan has sent her eldest son
Brendon off to England in hopes of keeping him safe (3). According to Khan, the purpose of this
is to keep him away from his pro Nationalist father, [and] also out of the Irish public sphere (3). In
The Railway Station Man, Helen is less interested in protesting political involvement than she is in
escaping it entirely (6). It is because of this that Helen is unlike many mother, she does not force
her son to owe her anything (9). This analysis differs from the one that will be examined in this
paper because, while the mother is an important figure, she

Educating Rita Transitions
An individual s experience of transitions into new phases of life and social contexts. These
transitions can be seen as milestones that lead to short term and long term changes, and can be
challenging, confronting, exciting or transformative, and may result in a positive development,
change an individual s perspective and a range of consequences for the individual and others.
Through our study of educating Rita and master and commander we explore how communication
can shape, transform, challenge attitudes and beliefs we will develop our understanding of how
social context of individual s interaction can affect perception of ourselves and others,
relationships and society. In educating Rita we live through the struggles of Rita a Strong willed
,passionate woman as a working class hairdresser that feels that life has passed her by, seeking a
higher educationand to explore what life has to offer, And Frank a Man born into a higher class
privileged lifestyle, and higher education but sees little incitement in the world around him. other
forms of transitions can also be seen in the film master and commander, Director Peter Weir uses

strongest drives, discovery and power. He uses the journeys of the main characters to illustrate...

Radical Communism Vs Radical Feminism
Marxist Feminism is focused on explaining the ways women are oppressed through the systems
of capitalism and private affairs. A Marxist feminist would say that equality can only be reached
through a radical reconstruction of the capitalist economy where most of women s labor is not
compensated. In regards to the wage gap, a Marxists feminist believes that there are two kinds
of labor, one is a productive labor that results in getting paid in money. The second is
reproductive which is not involved with the capitalist system, but it s more private affairs that
involves working to live for oneself. Cleaning, cooking, having children and simple errands are all
things that fall into the private, reproductive sphere of labor. It s said that women are basically
assigned to the reproductive labor and are expected to fall into the reproductive unpaid labor
instead of productive paid labor. Marxists Feminists argue that this is the root of unequal... Show

Marxist feminism believes that the only way to fix the wage gap would be to completely
reconstruct the capitalist system where radical feminism believes that the wage gap could only be
fixed if the patriarchy was completely destroyed. One key difference between Marxist feminism
and radical feminism is that Marxist feminism focuses more on material wealth rather than social
wealth. Radical feminism is more about social status rather than production status. A liberal
feminist has the viewpoint that each individual women must take action to gain her rights.
Therefore, their view on the wage gap differs as they don t believe in a reconstruction of an entire
system and they don t fall into the same radical beliefs as radical feminists. However, all three of
these feminist viewpoints all want the same thing, equal pay and equality in general. They all have
differing and contrasting opinions on how to reach that point, but ultimately they have the good of
society in

Is Social Media Responsible For The Increase Of Mental...
Is social media responsible for the increase in mental health issues in young people?
For the majority of my generation social media is an integral part of our lives. Since the invention
of the smart phone we have only ever been a few clicks away from our friends and endless
information. However, how is this affecting our mental health? On the one hand it can be argued
that it is enhancing our communication skills yet studies have suggested that offline behaviours
such as bullying are becoming more and more prevalent online.
With the dawn of social media also came cyberbullying. Unlike verbal and physical bullies,
cyberbullies have the power of anonymity and omnipresence, which in some cases can allow them
to be untouchable. One only has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence it is unlikely that participants would be willing to reveal that level of personal information
in a survey. Therefore, this study does not reflect the true number of the sample experiencing
suicidal thoughts. One could argue that cyberbullying is not the fault of social media and if
social media had not come about the other forms of bullying would just have increased in
severity. Ybarra and Mitchell et al (2004) found that: Students who bully online are more likely to
report poor parent child relationships and a lack of parental monitoring of online behaviour . So
surely the responsibility of the increase in mental health problems lies with the parents. The world
is always adapting therefore, it is a parent s duty to make sure that their children are taught the
appropriate behaviours for any social setting.
Yet one could argue that social media provides opportunities for social interaction that those with
mental illnesses such as social anxiety would not otherwise be able to have. 0.8% of the adult
population suffers from agoraphobia, a fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult.
So one could argue that social media provides a lower pressure environment where at least the
person is receiving some social interaction rather than none at all. Someone with social anxiety
disorder is characterized as having a constant phobia of social situations in which they believe they

Essay about The Urban Legend of the Backseat Murderer
The Backseat Murderer
A good urban legend is like a good movie. It unfolds perfectly and it appeals to the audience s
hopes, fears, and anxieties. The urban legend I am about to describe was told by a first year
female biology major at the University. She is of Indian descent and both her parents work in the
biotechnology field. I collected this story on a Sunday night in the dorm. The fact that it was
nighttime helped create the proper mood for the story. It was told in a dimly lit dorm room. The
story was told with an eerie tone of voice, with emphasis and excitement during certain parts. The
final part of the story was told in a mysterious fashion, which helped with the delivery of the ending.
I heard this story a while ago from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next morning, the woman s car is found on the side of the road in a ditch by a passing driver.
He pulls over to investigate, and the woman is found dead and stabbed multiple times. It was a
gruesome site. The police are called in and they decide to investigate by asking the locals if they
knew anything. When the gas attendant was interviewed, he claimed that he heard about an
escaped serial killer on the radio and said that he saw the killer in the backseat of her car
crouching down. When he told the woman to come inside he was really trying to warn her that the
killer was in the backseat of the car without alerting him.
This story is a popular urban legend. A story similar to this one also was related in Ann Landers
column in 1982 (Joyce). There are many variations to this story. In one version, instead of pulling
into a gas station, the woman keeps driving the car and is followed very closely by another
motorist. She mistakes the motorist as an assailant, but the motorist is really trying to warn her
that there is someone else in the backseat of her car. The motorist repeatedly flashes his lights in
order to keep the backseat murderer from attacking. In yet another version, the backseat murderer
is attempting to commit an act required for his gang initiation, he has to kill the woman and sever
a body part to bring back as a trophy in order to be accepted into his gang. Although there have
been no recorded instances of this story

Actions of Drugs
Actions of drugs on cardiovascular preparations
Introducion
The experiment outlined in this report was carried out with the intention to observe and explore
the effects of certain named drugs on a vascular preparation, in the cardiac region specifically. The
cardiovascular preparation used in this experiment was an isolation of the descending aorta of a rat.
This isolate is particularly useful as it mirrors the responses that would be observed in a human
sample, thus this experiment will give rise to conclusions applicable to humans. The drugs which
will be tested are as follows: acetylcholine, adrenaline, 5 hydroxytryptamine, isoprenaline,
noradrenaline and sodium nitroprusside. As the preparation, inherently was not in a live ... Show

As the added drug would be diluted in the organ bath it was important to calculate doses with that in
mind. Accordingly all calculations were made with the view of the end result, the final bath
concentration (FBC). To achieve the correct final bath concentration it was assumed that the organ
bath had a 25ml volume and then the corresponding quantity and concentration of drug was added.
As an example, 0.25 ml of 10Ојmol/l concentration of drug X was added to ~24.75ml of Krebs
solution to achieve a 1 in 100 dilution resulting in a final bath concentration of 0.1Ојmol/l.
Hence, the experimental procedure was executed as detailed here. A syringe fitted with a
hypodermic needle was used to infuse the drug into the organ bath away from the tissue sample.
To help maintain fair testing conditions it was done such that throughout the experiment the drug
was injected at the same speed at the same location. Prior to injecting, the syringe was checked
for bubbles of air accidentally acquired during uptake of the drug, as this would cause alterations
in volume of drug and thus alterations in FBC. Time at which the drug was added was recorded
using the Biopac software. Subsequently, two minutes was allowed for the interactions and binding
of the drug to occur, in which time the live recordings were monitored for changes. Once sufficient
time was allowed to see a significant change in

Essay about The Effects Of Media On Preschoolers
The use of media (television, video games, phones, music, and computers) by young children is
becoming more and more common in everyday life. Children are in front of media screens now
more than anytime in history. Parents are allowing, encouraging, and promoting the use of media
in many forms. There are endless sources available for parents to purchase for the use with infants,
toddlers,a nd preschoolers from movies to games and videos. (Ravichandran, France de Bravo,
2010, Yound Children and Screentime .) Although these media tupes are readily available, whether
they be for entertainment or educational use, are they really in the children s best interest?

(Ravichandran, France de Bravo, 2010, Yound Children and Screentime .) Young children learn
through play and interacting with people. If we want bright, intelligent, and active children with
phenomenal imaginations we have to take and make time to play with them and turn the media off.
Play allows children to learn, the wiring connections in their brains depends on them playing,
imagining and interacting with human beings. Play prepares them for real life. It s where children
work out their problems in order to deal with life. If children spend their time in front of screens
and interacting with media then it is not spent in play and the various brain connections are not
being connected, resulting in learing and attention problems. Children also learn from moving and
doing. When they are interacting with media they are usually not moving and doing. During a
2year longitudinal study where media exposure was recorded, both violent and educational, were
found and associated with physical aggression, verbal aggression and relational aggression
according to the gender of the children. It was determined that media exposure predicted various
types of aggression and prosocial behavior according to gender. To their amazement girls were
much more likely to engage in and be victimized by relational and verbal aggression than boys,
especially if other girls were present.Whereas boys were much more likely to participate in
physical aggression than girls,

Ackland Art Museum Essay
The Ackland Art Museum s new exhibition takes visitors through an experience that simulates
the chaos, fear and disorientation of war. The Flash of Light, Fog of War: Japanese Military

exhibition basically shows that collection, American studies doctoral candidate Trista Reisporter

Russo Japanese War. We start with this one, said Reisporter, because it brings a lot of these ideas
and these visual aesthetics together. Two other techniques were used in creating the print: gofun

pigment made of calcified oyster shells used to create snow or fog, Reisporter said. Gofun was
used to create the snowflakes, and the bokashi was used to create the moonlight and smoke in Koto s

Summary Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke
Years before Jamestown, in 1587 a man named John White and 117 men, women, and children
sailed from England to the coast of what is now North Carolina. They did this in hopes of
starting a new colony on the untenated territory of Roanoke Island. They established a temporary
understanding with the native islanders and consummated the first baby in the New World, but
soon afterwards problems arose. Supplies were quickly becoming scarce and issues started to
arise between the settlers and the natives of the land. White returned to England in despair asking
for help from Sir Walt Raleigh who had been the sponsor of the expedition. While he was
successful in his voyage to convince Sir Walt by the time of his return all the settlers had vanished
off the face of the Island.
James Horn, a historian at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation writes the story of Roanoke colony
onto paper in this intriguing book, A Kingdom Strange The Brief And Tragic History Of The Lost
Colony Of Roanoke Horn presents a persuasive hypothesis for what he believes must have
happened to the settlers that were said to have vanished. Using accessible information and resources
Horn concluded that the settlers did not in fact vanish or die, but rather just intermingle with the
natives of the land. Horn proves his theories in his book by introducing a new perspective on how
the settlers intermixed with the natives and were discovered centuries later by returning colonists.
The main characters of the book are

Looking Glass Wars Theme
In The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor, the story of Alice in Wonderland is retold, but with
a twist. Instead of Alice going to Wonderland because she wants to live in a different place, Alice

obstacles in her journey to the real world. She ends up in England where she is then convinced
that Wonderland isn t real and that it was all just her imagination. However, to her surprise, she

Suicide And Stereotypes
Over the past several decades, suicide has been a topic of great concern amongst researchers and
psychologists who continue to see a rise in the number of annual suicides. According to the
National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United
States. However, it is the third leading cause of death among individuals between ages 10 14 and
the second leading cause of death among 15 34 year olds (Piscopo 2). Just over the last forty years,
suiciderates for all ages have been on a steady incline, which has pushed researchers to investigate
possible causes. Particular attention has been paid to the possible influence news and television
coverage of suicide may have on the general populous. The theory that media stories can cause a
spike of imitative suicides is known as The Werther Effect, obtained from the belief that Goethe s
novel The Sorrows of Young Werther
in 1774 triggered an increase in the number of suicides,
leading to its ban throughout Europe (Gould 1269). Since then, there has been extensive research
into the way suicide is portrayed in the news, on television, in plays, music literature and social
media. In more recent years, researchers have found a strong relationship between suicide
portrayals in newspapers or on television and a subsequent increase in suicide rates (Hawton 1374).
However, one form of mass communication that has not been properly investigated is suicide
portrayals in fashion advertisements. Today, the

Books have been a form of entertainment for centuries. Authors from all over the world have
been writing books of various lengths and for various ages. In fact, many authors have become

written millions upon millions of books, but not many can compare to The Pilgrim s Progress, by
the famous author, John Bunyan. John Bunyan was born on the November of 1628, in a small

Shah spent over 300 million dollars in extravagant luxuries during a three day celebration; rather
than using the money for the needs of Iran. Citizens of Iran suffered greatly from The Shah s
regime. He was considered a dictator and used harsh punishments for rebellions. The Shah was a
corrupt leader who oppressed the Iranian people. Citizens of Iran finally had enough with the Shah
and decided to overthrow him. The Islamic Revolution (Iranian Revolution) lead by Ayatollah
Kjomeini began in 1977. Interminable protests against the Shah s dynasty commenced, and by
January 1978, the protests became deadly. Hundreds of Islamist students and religious leaders in
the city of Qom were furious over a story in the government controlled press they felt was libelous.

Role Of The Egf Receptor On Lipid
The Role of the EGF Receptor LET 23 on Lipid Biosynthesis in Caenorhabditis elegans
N. R. Contos
Thesis Abstract
The Caenorhabditis elegans LET 23, which is an Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) receptor, controls
multiple developmental pathways. In humans, EGF receptor mutations are implicated in a large
number of cancers due to excess signaling promoting cell growth and cell division. Recent work
has shown that in C. elegans LET 23 may also affect lipid production, specifically that of the
phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. To investigate the role of the LET 23 receptor on lipid
production, I have examined the cellular location of a fluorescent tagged SBP 1 marker under
different conditions within the worm and from these inferred levels of lipid production. I will
discuss my results and their impact on our understanding of EGF signaling and lipid biosynthesis.
Thesis Intro: As a whole the world is becoming more aware of how fats affect the body. Not only
are lipids a key element in cell membranes, they also lead to many issues regarding health. Obesity
is an ever increasing risk factor for many diseases including type II diabetes, cardiac disease, and
some forms of cancer (Kopelman 2000). As obesity transitions from little known problem into a full
blown global epidemic, it is important to understand how lipids are synthesized and regulated
within the body. Lipid synthesis pathways involve a complex interaction between the endocrine
system, tissues, nutrient storage and

Emergency Management Essay
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
This chapter provides an overview that describes the basic types of hazards threatening the United
States and provides definitions for some basic terms such as hazards, emergencies, and disasters.
The chapter also provides a brief history of emergency management in the federal government and a
general description of the current emergency management system including the basic functions
performed by local emergency managers. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the all hazards
approach and its implications for local emergency management.
Introduction There are many ways to describe emergency management and the importance of the
tasks emergency managers perform. Indeed, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The natural environment is, of course, not getting its revenge . Geophysical, meteorological, and
hydrologic processes are unfolding as they have for millennia, beginning long before humans
occupied the earth and continuing to the present. Given the eons long perspective of the natural
environment, it would be very difficult to identify meaningful changes in event frequency for the
short time period in which scientific records are available on geological, meteorological, and
hydrological phenomena. Event frequency, from an emergency management perspective, is not
really the issue. It is certainly true that, over the years, more people have been affected by natural
disasters and losses are becoming progressively greater. The significant feature driving these
observations, however, is the extent of human encroachment into hazard prone areas. With
increasing population density and changing land use patterns, more people are exposed to natural
hazards and consequently our accumulated human and economic losses are increasing. Much of
this exposure is a matter of choice. Sometimes people choose hazardous places, building houses on
picturesque cliffs, on mountain slopes, in floodplains, near beautiful volcanoes, or along seismic
faults. Sometimes people choose hazardous building materials that fail under extreme
environmental stresses for example, unreinforced masonry construction in seismically active areas.
Some exposure results from constrained choices; the cheap land or

Strategic Thinking and Strategic Management Processes...
A critical consideration of the contribution of strategic management and strategic thinking processes
to organisational performance.
Strategic management and strategic thinking processes make a significant contribution to
organisational performance.
A strategy, according to Robbins and Barnwell (2002, p. 139) is the adoption of courses of action
and the allocation of resources necessary to achieve the organisation s goals .
It is important for organisations to achieve their goals, as this can assist them to reach a
competitive advantage, which is a highly attractive position for a firm to be in.
This essay will look at strategic management processes and how they can be used to improve
organisational performance; it will also describe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nature of strategic thinking and strategic planning can be simplified through a comparison of
strategic planning as single loop learning and strategic thinking as double loop learning. The
relationship between the two shows them as separate factors, which are however, interrelated and
complementary thought methods. (Heracleous, 1998)
It is important to understand both strategic thinking and strategic planning in drawing conclusions
of the contributions of strategic thinking on organisational performance; this is due to the
similarities between the two. They must not be mistaken for one another and the results of one
should not be contributed to the results of the other.
Managers and organisations plan because it provides them with some direction and reduces
uncertainty within the firm. It is also used to set standards for controlling, it is therefore very
important within organisations. (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg Coulter et al, 2006)
According to Jones, Scholes and Whittington (2008, p. 402) Strategic planning may take the form
of systemised, step by step, chronological procedures to develop or coordinate an organisations
strategy .
Strategic Thinking can be described as a process which enables senior management to create a
strategy, debate relevant issues, evaluate the internal and external environment, create strategic
goals for the organisation and carry the strategy through effectively. (Decision Processes
International, 2008)

†the Advantages of Primary Elections Far Outweigh Their...
Primary elections are elections held previous to a Presidential election to decide upon the
presidential candidate from the two main parties. These are held in each state, each of which
then goes on to sponsor the winning candidate of their primary at the national convention, where
the party s presidential candidate is announced. This method of choosing a candidate came about
due to the McGovem/Fraser Commission of 1968 (where Mayor Daley refused McGovem the
chance to run as he was too liberal). It replaced the old system of decisions being made in smoke
filled rooms where party bosses were all powerful and made the decision.
The alternative to the primary election is the caucus, which is more similar to the original version of

It weeds out the weak candidates, who will lose momentum along the way and fall out of the race.
Those who cannot handle the campaign for the primary election, would not be cut out for
presidency.
A last advantage to the primary elections is that it gives a chance to candidates that would not
otherwise be in the running for presidential candidacy. What may be an unconventional democrat
/liberal who is unpopular within the party may prove a hit with the electorate and gain a lot of
votes. The party will get the candidate who is most electable out of the options, even if this is not
necessarily someone entirely in line with party ideology. Jimmy Carter, for example, was not
widely known until the 1976 primaries when his distance from DC politics played to his advantage,
as it meant that he was also distanced from the recent Watergate Scandal.
This could also be seen as a disadvantage to the primary election, as it prevents the parties from
expressing their wishes towards who the candidate should be, and thus an unworthy candidate may
be chosen. Primaries could lead to someone with little experience of governance, or someone who
is not representing the party ideal being put forward as candidate and the state parties could have no
influence over this.
Another disadvantage to the primary election is the pure monetary cost of the campaign. Candidates

Children Are A Product Of The People And Things They Are
Children are a product of the people and things they are surrounded by. As they age, they will
encounter trials and advancements that will either make or break them. Researchers have been
working for over 100 years to develop facts and theories that explain and analyze childhood
development. This paper will analyze various aspects of childhooddevelopment, such as associative
play, attention ability, aggression, and conformity with the help of observations from interactions
during preschool free play analyzed by the social cognition theory.

of their level of social interaction outside of the playing with the wooden blocks. As the time past,
they were remained content with doing their own thing, keeping one another company, and dancing
to the same beat.
Attention Ability
Major strides in child s ability to pay attention occurs during their preschool years (Santrock,
2013, p. 267). Being able to focus on one thing can be extremely difficult for toddlers because of
all the things in their world that are able to catch their attention, but luckily, as they grow and
mature they are able to advance in their attention skills. An aspect of attention that is improved
during these years, is the ability to focus on one task or object for an extended period of time, a
concept known as, sustained attention (Santrock, 2013, p. 268). The concept of sustained attention
was demonstrated by the same group of children in the previous examples. This particular group
of peers was the only group in the class that remained in the same spot, playing with the same
variation of toys, for well over 20 minutes. All of them, two boys and one girl, played with the same

Prostate Cancer Research Paper
Prostate cancer is considered as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, in the U. S and
most cases of prostate cancer have a good prognosis. Some of these cases can be aggressive and the
death rate is assessed to be 2.8%. The Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test is used for screening for
prostate cancer, to aid early detection and treatment.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the
prostate gland, found in the blood. Blood sample is utilized to check PSA levels and Lab results
are reported in nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. 4 ng/mL is considered to be the
normal level of PSA. Levels of PSA in the blood may be elevated in patients who have prostate ...

Although PSA Screening tests can facilitate to detect prostate cancer in its early stage, there is
controversy and concern about patient being unnecessarily treated and over diagnosed. The
reliability of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing is very poor. PSA values could be false
positive caused by conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, ejaculation, perineal trauma
and PSA value cannot be used to rule out prostate cancer. PSA screening misses a considerable
number of patients with PCa (false negatives) and wrongly suspects or false positives (Hayat,
Nordin and Berglund, 2013). Sensitivity of the test is determined with the percentage of people
tested with the disease that had positive results equals the number of patients that were true
positive. The cut off range for an abnormal PSA screening is 4.0 ng/mL. The American Cancer
Society estimated that, the sensitivity of a PSA levels cutoff of 4.0 ng/mL, was twenty one percent
for detecting any prostate cancer and fifty one percent for detecting high grade cancers (Gleason
≥8). Validity of the test can be determined by the ability of its screening to accurately identify, if
the patient has the disease or not. With PSA screening alone, one cannot validate if the patient has
prostate cancer and other diagnostic tests such as digital rectal exam

Illegals Are Costing Americans A Lot Of Money
Did you know more than 10,000 aliens cross the border every day, and there are several million
undocumented illegals in our country today. Only about .5% is sent back to their home country.
That is too many illegals for the U.S. to take care of, and a lot of them are taking American jobs
increasing our unemployment rate. Most of these Illegals bring in many drugs so they can get
money to start a new life. There are too many Illegals coming into our county its s a problem and
we need to change that. Illegals are costing Americans a lot of money. In 2000 Mexico proposed
that its poor works should be able to immigrate to the U.S., but the U.S. did not want Mexico s
poor workers. Mexico would be the only one who would benefit for that deal that allowed Mexican
immigrationin. America does not have enough jobs for both Americans and Mexico unskilled
workers. Like Samuel Robert said #2 . An increase in Mexico s immigration would lead to a lot
of competition and a lot more kids in public schools for education. We don t just need to focus on
keeping them out we also need to get rid of the illegals in our country now. You should not
reward the illegals we have for breaking that law. Many of the legal immigrants would say that is
unfair and try to sneak in, and not give them green cards it would add too many people to the
system at one time. It would also encourage more to come in illegally. What would we do with

Is America A Melting Pot Essay
Is America melting pot? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 47% of hate crimes are
racially motivated. In second place, a tie between religion and sexual orientation account for about
19%. Many people face discrimination every day because of religion, where they re from, and
even what they look like, but it should not be this way. The definition of melting potis a place where
different peoples, styles, theories, etc., are mixed together. Using this definition you could say that
some parts of the United statescan be considered a melting pot. Living in the united states we are
promised certain human rights and we should be able to be who we are without fear of being
judged or discriminated against, but for some people that s not the case. At first glance America
may seem like a melting pot because of all the differences between the people here, but after a

Poor Assumptions and Flawed Conclusions of Conrad s Heart...
During the period when Joseph Conrad s novel Heart of Darkness was written, a common theme in
literature was the testing of the moral life through actual experience. One could not realize an
ethical principle without it being justified through the outcome of some practical conflict. This idea
of testing morality through experience is exactly what is presented in Conrads novel as Marlows
journey results in a trial that not only defines his own beliefs but allows him to make a rather
pessimistic conclusion on the morality of mankind. This realization comes about through the author
s double presentation of imperialismin which it is both glorified and criticized. Marlow begins his

it all meant. (pg.39) He may question the situation at first, but he does not truly make the attempt to
understand it at that point. Later he is forced to confront it. Still, it is Marlow s distancing of
himself from the action around him that allows him to make his general judgements about
Imperialism and anti imperialism.

Essay on Czechoslovakia
At the early part of the 1990s, a major change in ideology was changing the face of Eastern Europe.
With the collapse of the Soviet authority in 1989, many of the Eastern European countries claimed
their independence, and started the process of Democratization in a Post Communist environment.
On January 1, 1993, almost three years after they claimed independence, the first Czechoslovakian
constitution was ratified, thus putting the wheel of Democracyinto motion. For a little more than
ten years, Czechoslovakia has been fashioning itself into a more Democratized country. I am going

Both the President and Prime Minister are elected by the majority party, not the people. It is
here, in my view, that Democracy in Czechoslovakia is weakened. The party charged with
selecting the candidates is popularly elected, but the candidate is not personally chosen by the
people. Furthermore, the constitution grants a five year term, and no limits on terms, to the
president. I think it is imperative for a good Democracy to not have one leader for an
exaggerated period of time. This invites more changes to take place and also provides the
opportunity for different regimes to function; however, the first president elected to power did
resign on his own will last February and a new Socialist President was selected. So, there is a
definite Democratic process in the selection and function of the leadership in Czechoslovakia, but I
feel that it is still a weak system that needs some reform.
The foreign and domestic policy in Czechoslovakia is something that has undergone radical change
since Soviet rule. Under Soviet rule, Czechoslovakia s social institutions were all under one control.
Education, healthcare and other institutions were all systematized by one authority. In 2003,
massive decentralization reforms changed the administration of the Czech government. The
oversight powers of many social institutions, such as education, healthcare, territorial planning and
the environment, were transferred to 14 regional governments. This transfer of power

The Explosion Of Rock N Roll Era
The explosion of Rock n Roll in the mid 1950 s helped bring to the forefront of American society
the idea that social, cultural, and musical change was deeply needed. By 1959, the initial
success and jolt of the Rock n Roll era, that took the American youth by storm three years earlier,
had officially fallen apart at the seams. The late 1950 s and early 1960 s marked a period of
decline for the Rock and Roll genre. The parting of Elvis Presley for the military in 1958, the
death of Buddy Holly and two other members of The Crickets in 1959, and the departure of the
other members of Rock and Roll s Big Five throughout much of the late 1950 s had devastated
America s hope for social and musical change (Ashton Lecture). With this breakdown of Rock n
Roll, came an era that was once again dominated and mesmerized by the Jazz, Pop and Country
Western genres. The Rock and Roll flame that captivated so many American citizens throughout
much of the 1950 s was slowly beginning to dwindle back into the darkness. As all hope seemed
to be lost, a new dawn for Rock and Roll was gradually appearing. In 1963 1964 with the
introduction of a small British band from Liverpool, England, the dawn that everyone was waiting
for had finally arrived and with it would change Rock n Roll history forever.

Importance Of The Human Genome Project
The Importance Of The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project(HGP) provided valuable information that changed biology and
medicine. Beginning in the 1990 s a research project was created with the intent of determining the
sequence of nucleotide base pairs that made up human DNA. The Collaboration was key to
completing this project, it was an international project that required, funding, certain technologies,
and research methods. The Human Genome project provided important information that benefited
medical science. This project helped scientist understand different genetic diseases that plagued
mankind and opened the doors to many other scientific findings. Although the Human Genome
Project was met with initial resistance it has proved to be significant in many aspects of science.
The Human Genome project was widely anticipated, the possibility of understanding human
disease, causes of disease, and human evolution was at the forefront of science. In 1985 a project
was formally proposed with the goal of determining the complete nucleotide sequence of the human
genome. Although the proposal had the possibility to change science it was met with much
resistance. The main concern was privacy of genetic information, educating health care
professionals, and ethical issues involving the design of genetic research. Finally, in 1990 under the
direction of U.S. department of energy and the national institutes of health the Human Genome

The Importance Of Voting In Australian Democracy
Voting takes place on a day chosen by the government. Federal elections occur three years before
the last election, but sometimes the government will call an election earlier. MPs in the federal
House of Representatives serve for a three year term. Some of the state and territory parliaments
have four year terms.
Who can vote?
Voting and having a say in Australian democracyhas changed substantially since federation. In
1901 most male British subjects over 21 and resident in Australia could vote. In 1902, Australia
became the second country in the world, after New Zealand, to extend voting rights to women. The
Commonwealth Franchise Act in 1902, meant that women gained the right to vote and stand for
election to parliament.
In 1973, more Australians gained the right to participate in elections when the voting age was
lowered from 21 to 18 years old. Who should have the right to vote in Australia s democracy
continues to be discussed and can be changed by an Act of Parliament. People who are seventeen
years old are allowed to enrol to vote, but you are not allowed to vote until you are 18 years old or
over.
To be able to vote, you would need to be an Australian citizen or a British subject who was on a
commonwealth electoral roll on the 25th of January since 1984. Australia is one of the few
countries who has compulsory voting. If a citizen, you must register first before you vote. Your

Effective Workplace Communication
Listening and Effective Workplace Communication
James Humes, a former presidential speech writer, stated that, the art of communication is the
language of leadership (Leading Thoughts, 2010). Communication is an essential process that is
common in the workplace. Everyone in the workplace especially leaders must communicate with
others. Ideas, conversations, disagreements, and commitments can all be exchanged through
communication. Anyone can communicate but it takes discipline and skills to effectively
communicate. These skills can include feedback, presentation, non verbal communication, and
listening. Listening is the most valuable skills to effective workplace communication because it

If a guest calls down to the front desk and complains about their room the front desk clerk needs
to actively listen to know how to respond. A response may include sending up an item that was
requested by the guest or escalating the problem to upper management. Intently listening to the
message that is presented will help employees and managers respond in an appropriate manner. A
response to listening does not always have to verbal. A non verbal response like smiling or
nodding can be an appropriate response. It does not matter if the response is verbal or non verbal,
listening will help to ensure that the response is effective.
People tend to assume that the most important part of the pyramid is the top but they are incorrect.
The bottom of the pyramid is the most important part of the pyramid. The bottom of the pyramid is
the foundation on which the other blocks stand. If there was a pyramid to represent communication
skills, listening would be the foundation or the base for communication. Communication skills
build on each other and the skill that is used for the moment in time is the tip of the pyramid. Truly
effective communication involves more than just expressing yourself clearly. It also requires
effective listening (Brown, 2009). Listening helps to strengthen the other communication skills like
feedback and presentation. It is hard to present to an audience without understanding the audience s

Yellowtone And Hawaii Similarities
Yellowstone and Hawaii Comparison Hawaii and Yellowstone both attract millions of people per
year. Tourists go to Hawaii for sunshine and beaches, and to Yellowstone to experience the hot
springs and wonders of nature. Hawaii and Yellowstone may have differences, but what many
people don t know is that they are alike in numerous ways. Both Hawaiiand Yellowstone were
created by hotspot. A difference is that the Islands of Hawaii were created over thousands of years
because of a plate that is moving over a hotspot, and every once and awhile magma from the
hotspot pushes up and creates a volcano. In contrast, Yellowstone was formed when a hotspot
moved under it and over millions of years has caused eruptions which have shaped present day

A similarity is that both Yellowstone and Hawaii are located in the middle of a plate, but Hawaii
is located on the Pacific plate where as Yellowstone is located on the North American plate.
Another reason they are different is that they have different crusts. Hawaii has an oceanic crust
which is thinner than continental crust, which is what Yellowstone has. A further example of how
they are similar is that they are both located above a hotspot. A hotspot is an area of volcanic
activity. Hawaii and Yellowstone are both major vacation destinations; they may seem completely
different, but they are actually quite similar. A difference between them is that people go to
Hawaii to see the volcanoes and go to Yellowstone to see Old Faithful and hot springs. Although
many people may think this is a difference, it is actually a similarity because all of these things are
volcanic activity caused by hotspots.Hotspots lie underneath both Yellowstone and Hawaii, but they
cause different geological activity in both places. An example of how they are different is that
Hawaii has the most active volcanoes on earth whereas Yellowstone s volcano is dormant. On the
other hand, they are both similar because they both produce geysers and hot

Pedagogy means the methodologies. It has been mixed with art of teaching. So, the lecturers and
the language practitioners and the students can make use of pedagogy along with ICT to enhance
the language abilities and skills of both teachers and students. Students can be understood and
evaluated effectively if the teachers have got strong knowledge on pedagogy and ICT. Therefore,
as I believe these two terms play an inseparable role when it comes to the field of teaching a

Heroes Every Child Should Know Perseus And The Miser
The Greek fables that were written in the past still inspire us today. Well lets just say that their
are a lot of lessons inside of these fables and myths that can inspire people today and people can
learn a lot of lessons from it. For example, in some fables the greeks teach a lesson about
appreciating and cherishing what one has before it is won t have them and when they are gone you
will want to have them back again. Some fablesthat support this claim is The Hen and The
Golden Eggs , Heroes Every Child Should Know Perseus and The Miser . These are some fables
that can teach people to appreciate and cherish things before they are gone and some myths that
show that how to use things appropriatly and to use things usefully.

The fable is Heroes Every Child Should Know Perseus this fable had the people cherish their
things and use them appropriately like Perseus. Perseus had to go on a quest to defeat an evil
enemy named MEDUSA she was a very ugly lady who had lots of fangs on her head and Perseus
had to cut her head off. He was nervous about it but he accepted the task so he was given lots of
equipment to help him like a sword that can cut off medusa s head and some sandals that could
make him fly all the way to Medusa. When he was fighting Medusa he remembered everything that
he had and the advice he got so that in the end he had cut off Medusa s head and had survived this
very frightening mission. In this myth Perseus used his things appripriatly and use them usefully,
unlike the other fables that had people disrespecting their things.
In conclusion the ancient greek myths and fables still inspire and teach lessons to people today
by showing us some consequences the fables and myths had. Some bad consequences were like
in The Miser and The Hen and The Golden Eggs when they lost their chance to have something
good but did not because they did not make the right choice. Some good choices that happened is
in Perseus because in that story he was thinking and used his resources wisely and in the end he
had accomplished his mission. So to wrap it up the lesson is to appreciate and cherish things

Summary Of Brunelleschi s Dome
Throughout the book Brunelleschi s Dome, Filippo has to overcome others to make his ideas
become a reality. First he loses the bronze door competition to his competition Lorenzo. Then he
has to fight against the Opera del Duomo to allow his model to be used for the Dome. He
continued to fight for he designs with trying to flood Lucca, and building II Badalone, both being
fails. After those fails, and the Domes set backs, the Operabegan to lose faith in Filippo, but that
wouldn t stop him. He continued to be in charge of building the Dome, and later designing the
lanterns after having Antonio steal his ideas. Filippo had a problem with communicating to
others. He feared that they would steal his ideas and claim them as their own, so he never told
anyone anything. He keeps all his notes coded and only shared the very minimal with his friends.
This allowed him an upper hand above his competition. It made it difficult for others to reproduce
his work, let alone understand how he came up with the ideas he had, making much of his work a
mystery.
The authors aims were to educate the reader upon the history of the Dome and to show how it
was built, why it was an amazing feat, and why Filippo was an ingenious architecture. King
achieved his aims very well. Through out the book, he expressed the importance of Filippo and
everything that he did. King tells about how Filippo built and designed the Dome. He supported
the claim that Filippo was before his time, and that no one could duplicate his work; A proud
Florentine, Michelangelo claimed that he could equal it, Filippo s dome but never surprises it. In
fact, he did not even equal it... (Page 163)
King s writing was both fair and accurate. He seemed to have done lots of research, and written
only the facts that had been proven. When he did write anything that seemed a little exaggerated,
he would always source the statement making sure the reader knew that he was only stating what
someone else said, not the complete truth. King also shows both sides of the story. He gives all
characters an equal chance to prove themselves. As seen best with Lorenzo, King praises him first
with Lorenzo s doors, but then he expresses Lorenzo s incompetence towards the wooden

INTRODUCTION The Philippine educational setting is bilingual in nature, thus the level of performance of public high school students towards English proficiency in learning creates its possibility to be monolingual by using the considered foreign language as the standard language in teaching is impossible yet can be proven by theoretical studies to be conducted. Many accounts of constitutional laws, studies and facts regarding this issue of using the English language in teaching academic subjects such as science and technology can well explain its effective usage in the world of language education namely: the English language proficiency public students show, the legal basis it holds, the level of performance the public high school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Using the level of performance shown by public high school students is a logical proof to be sustained in this field of analysis. Furthermore, to justify this study, another arising credential is the determined number of students passing the examinations. The fourth year public high school students passing the institute of higher learning gives a significant resolution to the argument rose upon by using English language in the field of teaching. The passing percentage of students coming from public schools provides us with enough basis. College entrance exams in prominent universities here in the Philippines are mostly presented in full English text, except for the UPCAT exam. The number of students passing entrance examinations as presented facts is further established through accumulating data, which serves as its foundation. Finally, the process of publishing books can concretize these justifications. The revision of textbooks and workbooks being used in teaching science and math is done due to the fast proliferation of concepts used, which are usually in the English language. The standard language used in any publication of science and mathematics textbooks and workbooks are English. This does make it possible of stating English as the standard language of education (Otanes, 1988, pp.84 85). • 3. Analysis Of Domestic Unrest And Jennifer Johnston s... One of the critics who discuss Johnston s work is Laila Khan. In her essay, Domestic Unrest and Jennifer Johnston s Fiction of the Irish Trouble, Khan focuses on how Johnston s novels do not concentrate on the violence happening in the nation, but instead how she uses Irish domestic fictions to explored alternative approaches to friendships and family bonds that could exist when women reject nationalist narratives (2). Khan s essay analyzes these trends in relationship to the mothers in Johnston s The Railway Station Man and Shadows on Our Skin. While women often are representative of Ireland in Irish fictions, Khan notes that Johnston purposely creates mothers that refuses to act as mouthpieces for national rhetoric in the home, choosing instead passivity or alternative kinships as what they see as the only escape (3). An example of this from Shadows on Our Skin is the way the Mrs. Logan has sent her eldest son Brendon off to England in hopes of keeping him safe (3). According to Khan, the purpose of this is to keep him away from his pro Nationalist father, [and] also out of the Irish public sphere (3). In The Railway Station Man, Helen is less interested in protesting political involvement than she is in escaping it entirely (6). It is because of this that Helen is unlike many mother, she does not force her son to owe her anything (9). This analysis differs from the one that will be examined in this paper because, while the mother is an important figure, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Radical Communism Vs Radical Feminism Marxist Feminism is focused on explaining the ways women are oppressed through the systems of capitalism and private affairs. A Marxist feminist would say that equality can only be reached through a radical reconstruction of the capitalist economy where most of women s labor is not compensated. In regards to the wage gap, a Marxists feminist believes that there are two kinds of labor, one is a productive labor that results in getting paid in money. The second is reproductive which is not involved with the capitalist system, but it s more private affairs that involves working to live for oneself. Cleaning, cooking, having children and simple errands are all things that fall into the private, reproductive sphere of labor. It s said that women are basically assigned to the reproductive labor and are expected to fall into the reproductive unpaid labor instead of productive paid labor. Marxist feminism believes that the only way to fix the wage gap would be to completely reconstruct the capitalist system where radical feminism believes that the wage gap could only be fixed if the patriarchy was completely destroyed. One key difference between Marxist feminism and radical feminism is that Marxist feminism focuses more on material wealth rather than social wealth. Radical feminism is more about social status rather than production status. A liberal feminist has the viewpoint that each individual women must take action to gain her rights. Therefore, their view on the wage gap differs as they don t believe in a reconstruction of an entire system and they don t fall into the same radical beliefs as radical feminists. • 6. Is Social Media Responsible For The Increase Of Mental... Is social media responsible for the increase in mental health issues in young people? For the majority of my generation social media is an integral part of our lives. Since the invention of the smart phone we have only ever been a few clicks away from our friends and endless information. However, how is this affecting our mental health? On the one hand it can be argued that it is enhancing our communication skills yet studies have suggested that offline behaviours such as bullying are becoming more and more prevalent online. With the dawn of social media also came cyberbullying. Unlike verbal and physical bullies, cyberbullies have the power of anonymity and omnipresence, which in some cases can allow them to be untouchable. One only has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence it is unlikely that participants would be willing to reveal that level of personal information in a survey. Therefore, this study does not reflect the true number of the sample experiencing suicidal thoughts. One could argue that cyberbullying is not the fault of social media and if social media had not come about the other forms of bullying would just have increased in severity. Ybarra and Mitchell et al (2004) found that: Students who bully online are more likely to report poor parent child relationships and a lack of parental monitoring of online behaviour . So surely the responsibility of the increase in mental health problems lies with the parents. The world is always adapting therefore, it is a parent s duty to make sure that their children are taught the appropriate behaviours for any social setting. Yet one could argue that social media provides opportunities for social interaction that those with mental illnesses such as social anxiety would not otherwise be able to have. 0.8% of the adult population suffers from agoraphobia, a fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult. So one could argue that social media provides a lower pressure environment where at least the person is receiving some social interaction rather than none at all. • 7. Essay about The Urban Legend of the Backseat Murderer The Backseat Murderer A good urban legend is like a good movie. It unfolds perfectly and it appeals to the audience s hopes, fears, and anxieties. The urban legend I am about to describe was told by a first year female biology major at the University. She is of Indian descent and both her parents work in the biotechnology field. I collected this story on a Sunday night in the dorm. The fact that it was nighttime helped create the proper mood for the story. It was told in a dimly lit dorm room. The story was told with an eerie tone of voice, with emphasis and excitement during certain parts. The final part of the story was told in a mysterious fashion, which helped with the delivery of the ending. I heard this story a while ago from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the gas attendant was interviewed, he claimed that he heard about an escaped serial killer on the radio and said that he saw the killer in the backseat of her car crouching down. When he told the woman to come inside he was really trying to warn her that the killer was in the backseat of the car without alerting him. This story is a popular urban legend. A story similar to this one also was related in Ann Landers column in 1982 (Joyce). There are many variations to this story. In one version, instead of pulling into a gas station, the woman keeps driving the car and is followed very closely by another motorist. She mistakes the motorist as an assailant, but the motorist is really trying to warn her that there is someone else in the backseat of her car. The motorist repeatedly flashes his lights in order to keep the backseat murderer from attacking. In yet another version, the backseat murderer is attempting to commit an act required for his gang initiation, he has to kill the woman and sever a body part to bring back as a trophy in order to be accepted into his gang. The cardiovascular preparation used in this experiment was an isolation of the descending aorta of a rat. This isolate is particularly useful as it mirrors the responses that would be observed in a human sample, thus this experiment will give rise to conclusions applicable to humans. As the added drug would be diluted in the organ bath it was important to calculate doses with that in mind. Accordingly all calculations were made with the view of the end result, the final bath concentration (FBC). To achieve the correct final bath concentration it was assumed that the organ bath had a 25ml volume and then the corresponding quantity and concentration of drug was added. As an example, 0.25 ml of 10Ојmol/l concentration of drug X was added to ~24.75ml of Krebs solution to achieve a 1 in 100 dilution resulting in a final bath concentration of 0.1Ојmol/l. Hence, the experimental procedure was executed as detailed here. A syringe fitted with a hypodermic needle was used to infuse the drug into the organ bath away from the tissue sample. To help maintain fair testing conditions it was done such that throughout the experiment the drug was injected at the same speed at the same location. Prior to injecting, the syringe was checked for bubbles of air accidentally acquired during uptake of the drug, as this would cause alterations in volume of drug and thus alterations in FBC. Time at which the drug was added was recorded using the Biopac software. Subsequently, two minutes was allowed for the interactions and binding of the drug to occur, in which time the live recordings were monitored for changes. • 11. Summary Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke Years before Jamestown, in 1587 a man named John White and 117 men, women, and children sailed from England to the coast of what is now North Carolina. They did this in hopes of starting a new colony on the untenated territory of Roanoke Island. They established a temporary understanding with the native islanders and consummated the first baby in the New World, but soon afterwards problems arose. Supplies were quickly becoming scarce and issues started to arise between the settlers and the natives of the land. White returned to England in despair asking for help from Sir Walt Raleigh who had been the sponsor of the expedition. While he was successful in his voyage to convince Sir Walt by the time of his return all the settlers had vanished off the face of the Island. James Horn, a historian at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation writes the story of Roanoke colony onto paper in this intriguing book, A Kingdom Strange The Brief And Tragic History Of The Lost Colony Of Roanoke Horn presents a persuasive hypothesis for what he believes must have happened to the settlers that were said to have vanished. Using accessible information and resources Horn concluded that the settlers did not in fact vanish or die, but rather just intermingle with the natives of the land. Horn proves his theories in his book by introducing a new perspective on how the settlers intermixed with the natives and were discovered centuries later by returning colonists. Suicide And Stereotypes Over the past several decades, suicide has been a topic of great concern amongst researchers and psychologists who continue to see a rise in the number of annual suicides. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. However, it is the third leading cause of death among individuals between ages 10 14 and the second leading cause of death among 15 34 year olds (Piscopo 2). Just over the last forty years, suiciderates for all ages have been on a steady incline, which has pushed researchers to investigate possible causes. Particular attention has been paid to the possible influence news and television coverage of suicide may have on the general populous. The theory that media stories can cause a spike of imitative suicides is known as The Werther Effect, obtained from the belief that Goethe s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774 triggered an increase in the number of suicides, leading to its ban throughout Europe (Gould 1269). Since then, there has been extensive research into the way suicide is portrayed in the news, on television, in plays, music literature and social media. In more recent years, researchers have found a strong relationship between suicide portrayals in newspapers or on television and a subsequent increase in suicide rates (Hawton 1374). • 22. Role Of The Egf Receptor On Lipid The Role of the EGF Receptor LET 23 on Lipid Biosynthesis in Caenorhabditis elegans N. R. Contos Thesis Abstract The Caenorhabditis elegans LET 23, which is an Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) receptor, controls multiple developmental pathways. In humans, EGF receptor mutations are implicated in a large number of cancers due to excess signaling promoting cell growth and cell division. Recent work has shown that in C. elegans LET 23 may also affect lipid production, specifically that of the phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. To investigate the role of the LET 23 receptor on lipid production, I have examined the cellular location of a fluorescent tagged SBP 1 marker under different conditions within the worm and from these inferred levels of lipid production. I will discuss my results and their impact on our understanding of EGF signaling and lipid biosynthesis. Thesis Intro: As a whole the world is becoming more aware of how fats affect the body. Not only are lipids a key element in cell membranes, they also lead to many issues regarding health. Obesity is an ever increasing risk factor for many diseases including type II diabetes, cardiac disease, and some forms of cancer (Kopelman 2000). As obesity transitions from little known problem into a full blown global epidemic, it is important to understand how lipids are synthesized and regulated within the body. Emergency Management Essay CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT This chapter provides an overview that describes the basic types of hazards threatening the United States and provides definitions for some basic terms such as hazards, emergencies, and disasters. The chapter also provides a brief history of emergency management in the federal government and a general description of the current emergency management system including the basic functions performed by local emergency managers. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the all hazards approach and its implications for local emergency management. The natural environment is, of course, not getting its revenge . Geophysical, meteorological, and hydrologic processes are unfolding as they have for millennia, beginning long before humans occupied the earth and continuing to the present. Given the eons long perspective of the natural environment, it would be very difficult to identify meaningful changes in event frequency for the short time period in which scientific records are available on geological, meteorological, and hydrological phenomena. Event frequency, from an emergency management perspective, is not really the issue. It is certainly true that, over the years, more people have been affected by natural disasters and losses are becoming progressively greater. The significant feature driving these observations, however, is the extent of human encroachment into hazard prone areas. With increasing population density and changing land use patterns, more people are exposed to natural hazards and consequently our accumulated human and economic losses are increasing. Much of this exposure is a matter of choice. Sometimes people choose hazardous places, building houses on picturesque cliffs, on mountain slopes, in floodplains, near beautiful volcanoes, or along seismic faults. Sometimes people choose hazardous building materials that fail under extreme environmental stresses for example, unreinforced masonry construction in seismically active areas. Some exposure results from constrained choices; the cheap land or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strategic management and strategic thinking processes make a significant contribution to organisational performance. A strategy, according to Robbins and Barnwell (2002, p. 139) is the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary to achieve the organisation s goals . It is important for organisations to achieve their goals, as this can assist them to reach a competitive advantage, which is a highly attractive position for a firm to be in. The nature of strategic thinking and strategic planning can be simplified through a comparison of strategic planning as single loop learning and strategic thinking as double loop learning. The relationship between the two shows them as separate factors, which are however, interrelated and complementary thought methods. (Heracleous, 1998) It is important to understand both strategic thinking and strategic planning in drawing conclusions of the contributions of strategic thinking on organisational performance; this is due to the similarities between the two. They must not be mistaken for one another and the results of one should not be contributed to the results of the other. Managers and organisations plan because it provides them with some direction and reduces uncertainty within the firm. It is also used to set standards for controlling, it is therefore very important within organisations. (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg Coulter et al, 2006) According to Jones, Scholes and Whittington (2008, p. 402) Strategic planning may take the form of systemised, step by step, chronological procedures to develop or coordinate an organisations strategy . Primary elections are elections held previous to a Presidential election to decide upon the presidential candidate from the two main parties. These are held in each state, each of which then goes on to sponsor the winning candidate of their primary at the national convention, where the party s presidential candidate is announced. This method of choosing a candidate came about due to the McGovem/Fraser Commission of 1968 (where Mayor Daley refused McGovem the chance to run as he was too liberal). It replaced the old system of decisions being made in smoke filled rooms where party bosses were all powerful and made the decision. What may be an unconventional democrat /liberal who is unpopular within the party may prove a hit with the electorate and gain a lot of votes. The party will get the candidate who is most electable out of the options, even if this is not necessarily someone entirely in line with party ideology. Jimmy Carter, for example, was not widely known until the 1976 primaries when his distance from DC politics played to his advantage, as it meant that he was also distanced from the recent Watergate Scandal. This could also be seen as a disadvantage to the primary election, as it prevents the parties from expressing their wishes towards who the candidate should be, and thus an unworthy candidate may be chosen. Primaries could lead to someone with little experience of governance, or someone who is not representing the party ideal being put forward as candidate and the state parties could have no influence over this. The reliability of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing is very poor. PSA values could be false positive caused by conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, ejaculation, perineal trauma and PSA value cannot be used to rule out prostate cancer. PSA screening misses a considerable number of patients with PCa (false negatives) and wrongly suspects or false positives (Hayat, Nordin and Berglund, 2013). Sensitivity of the test is determined with the percentage of people tested with the disease that had positive results equals the number of patients that were true positive. The cut off range for an abnormal PSA screening is 4.0 ng/mL. The American Cancer Society estimated that, the sensitivity of a PSA levels cutoff of 4.0 ng/mL, was twenty one percent for detecting any prostate cancer and fifty one percent for detecting high grade cancers (Gleason ≥8). During the period when Joseph Conrad s novel Heart of Darkness was written, a common theme in literature was the testing of the moral life through actual experience. This idea of testing morality through experience is exactly what is presented in Conrads novel as Marlows journey results in a trial that not only defines his own beliefs but allows him to make a rather pessimistic conclusion on the morality of mankind. Both the President and Prime Minister are elected by the majority party, not the people. It is here, in my view, that Democracy in Czechoslovakia is weakened. The party charged with selecting the candidates is popularly elected, but the candidate is not personally chosen by the people. Furthermore, the constitution grants a five year term, and no limits on terms, to the president. I think it is imperative for a good Democracy to not have one leader for an exaggerated period of time. This invites more changes to take place and also provides the opportunity for different regimes to function; however, the first president elected to power did resign on his own will last February and a new Socialist President was selected. So, there is a definite Democratic process in the selection and function of the leadership in Czechoslovakia, but I feel that it is still a weak system that needs some reform. The Explosion Of Rock N Roll Era The explosion of Rock n Roll in the mid 1950 s helped bring to the forefront of American society the idea that social, cultural, and musical change was deeply needed. By 1959, the initial success and jolt of the Rock n Roll era, that took the American youth by storm three years earlier, had officially fallen apart at the seams. The late 1950 s and early 1960 s marked a period of decline for the Rock and Roll genre. The parting of Elvis Presley for the military in 1958, the death of Buddy Holly and two other members of The Crickets in 1959, and the departure of the other members of Rock and Roll s Big Five throughout much of the late 1950 s had devastated America s hope for social and musical change (Ashton Lecture). With this breakdown of Rock n Roll, came an era that was once again dominated and mesmerized by the Jazz, Pop and Country Western genres. The Rock and Roll flame that captivated so many American citizens throughout much of the 1950 s was slowly beginning to dwindle back into the darkness. As all hope seemed to be lost, a new dawn for Rock and Roll was gradually appearing. In 1963 1964 with the introduction of a small British band from Liverpool, England, the dawn that everyone was waiting for had finally arrived and with it would change Rock n Roll history forever. • 44. Summary Of Brunelleschi s Dome Throughout the book Brunelleschi s Dome, Filippo has to overcome others to make his ideas become a reality. First he loses the bronze door competition to his competition Lorenzo. Then he has to fight against the Opera del Duomo to allow his model to be used for the Dome. He continued to fight for he designs with trying to flood Lucca, and building II Badalone, both being fails. After those fails, and the Domes set backs, the Operabegan to lose faith in Filippo, but that wouldn t stop him. He continued to be in charge of building the Dome, and later designing the lanterns after having Antonio steal his ideas. Filippo had a problem with communicating to others. He feared that they would steal his ideas and claim them as their own, so he never told anyone anything. He keeps all his notes coded and only shared the very minimal with his friends. This allowed him an upper hand above his competition. It made it difficult for others to reproduce his work, let alone understand how he came up with the ideas he had, making much of his work a mystery. The authors aims were to educate the reader upon the history of the Dome and to show how it was built, why it was an amazing feat, and why Filippo was an ingenious architecture. King achieved his aims very well. Through out the book, he expressed the importance of Filippo and everything that he did. King tells about how Filippo built and designed the Dome. He supported the claim that Filippo was before his time, and that no one could duplicate his work; A proud Florentine, Michelangelo claimed that he could equal it, Filippo s dome but never surprises it. In fact, he did not even equal it... (Page 163) King s writing was both fair and accurate. He seemed to have done lots of research, and written only the facts that had been proven. When he did write anything that seemed a little exaggerated, he would always source the statement making sure the reader knew that he was only stating what someone else said, not the complete truth. King also shows both sides of the story. He gives all characters an equal chance to prove themselves. As seen best with Lorenzo, King praises him first with Lorenzo s doors, but then he expresses Lorenzo s incompetence towards the wooden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
