This document provides analysis and feedback on the design of several magazine covers: - The first design has too much typography that distracts from the image. However, the masthead style catches the eye with its use of two different fonts. - The second design has a more professional layout with a sophisticated masthead that relates to the target audience. Placement of text complements the central image. - The third design effectively grabs attention through an unusual banner above the masthead and boxed subheadings. However, the left image seems overly distracting and poorly photoshopped. - Feedback is provided on the masthead, image, text placement and color choices of each magazine cover design. Adherence

2. Although this design uses the typical codes
and conventions when it comes to placement
of text and other assets, I feel that there is
too much typography. It distracts the reader
from the image and the colour and style of
text is not consistent.
However I do like the style of the masthead
as I feel that it is unique the way that the two
words are different styles really catches the
readers eye.
This person has successful used persuasive
techniques by highlighting the words ‘free’
and ‘only’. They have also included the date,
price, barcode and headings for inside
stories.
Moreover, the typography size of the
subheadings against the masthead is almost
equal which ruins the purpose of the
masthead.

3. This design is much better than the previous
design, as the layout of the typography is more
professional. The mast head relates to the
target audience as it is thin and sophisticated.
The placement of text compliments the
picture as it allows the main image to be the
centre of attention.
What is interesting and subverts the codes and
conventions of usual regional magazines is the
banner placed above the masthead. This again
helps grab the readers attention as the text/
what it is advertising has a white box out
behind it. They have also used a box out
behind a specific sub heading, which highlights
the most important story in the magazine,
instead of using overly large text.
Something that I feel is negative about this
design is the image of the man in the left hand
side which seems to be too distracting and
obviously photo shopped, making it appear
less professional.

4. The masthead of this design is very professional, due to the
choice of font which relates to the target audience of London
as most people are wealthy within that region. The masthead
over laps the main image of the girl which makes it stand out
due to her hair colour being a contrast to the font colour. They
have used consistent font style for the mast head and main
sub heading at the bottom of the page.
The placement of text on the left hand side appears a bit
messy and uneasy to read, therefore I would consider either
placing it higher or reducing the amount of subheadings.
Moreover, all appropriate conventions have been used with a
barcode, price, subheadings and mast head.
The image of a person directly addresses the audience and
draws them in, however it makes a clear distinction of what
gender they are aiming at.

5. This is a national magazine designed by
an A level student.
The placement of typography and image
is completely different to the previous
three magazines. On this design, they
have focussed on intriguing the audience
through the use of image. The image
overlaps the masthead which makes it
appear 3D. This is effective for attracting
the audience, however the magazine
brand is not clear and therefore can cause
complications when trying to advertise
the magazine.
I feel that the colour selection is
interesting as the colours contrast, but
this is done in order to make the
masthead stand out. They have remained
professional with consistent colour
choices.
It also includes all the appropriate assets
to follow the codes and conventions of
other magazines.
