These stories are known as adaptive stories. We see a clear example of an adaptive story when
looking at Babylon in 586 BCE. During this time the wall of Jerusalem was breached and the
temple was destroyed. The Jewish culture was threatened of being altered by bloody creation
stories like Marduk and Tiamat. To keep their culture alive they would combat creation stories like
Marduk and Tiamat by telling the stories of Genesis. Stories like Genesis helped members of the
Jewish community adapt to the catastrophe that was going on around them. They were able to live
vicariously through positive stories and were able to ease the hardship that they were experiencing.
