Benefits of a Gospel Meeting by Mike King
A plethora of strength and benefit can be realized by both a congregation and individu-
als when attending local gospel meetings. We are sometimes guilty of discrediting ac-
tivities that are good and wholesome because we lack interest, spiritual inclination, and
being unselfish with out time. It is not uncommon to hear today that door knocking is an
archaic method of evangelism and gospel meetings are things of the past. Never shall
a personal distribution of truth ever become outdated or obsolete! God will not let it
happen because the proclamation of truth was to be done through “earthen vessels,”
His followers (Rom. 9:21; II Tim. 2:20-22).
The apostle Paul records the placement of various spiritual men in the Lord’s church
from the time of the initiation of the body in Acts 2 on Pentecost. Their mission was to
“perfect (mature) the saints,” for “ministering,” and “building up the body of Christ.” The
objectives are to enable Christians to become “perfect” (full-grown, mature, complete)
“unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” This would enable the truth to
be spoken in love and each hearing individual to be edified and motivated “to the effec-
tual working in the measure of every part, making increase of the body unto the edifying
of itself in love” (Eph. 4:11-16).
The purpose of a gospel meeting is not just a tradition or a necessary evil; it has a three
-fold purpose:
1. It is to admonish or give “kind counsel, reprove.” We must be “able to admonish one
another” (Rom. 15:14). We are to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…
admonishing one another in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Col. 3:16).
2. We have been instructed to exhort one another as well. Christians are urged to do
good deeds and to preach (II Tim. 4:1-5). Encouragement is given to teach and consent
to wholesome words which teach and exhort (I Tim. 6:2, 3). Admonition and exhortation
by means of God’s powerful Word contain the ingredients for saving self and others
that hear us (I Tim. 4:11-16).
3. Gospel meetings are good for renewal and revival. David prayed for God to “renew a
right spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10) for he knew he was sinful. Isaiah said that God and
His word will renew our strength, but reminders are needed. A meeting is a good time
to repent, find restoration, and return to the Lord (Heb. 6:6). Take advantage of every
opportunity.

Jesus – Prophet, Priest and King - Part Four
Christ was appointed by God to be our high priest
after the order of Melchizedek. Jesus was eminently quali-
fied to be our high priest as the writer of Hebrews makes
clear. “For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is
holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and
has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not
need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices,
first for His own sins and then for the people's, for this
He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For
the law appoints as high priests men who have weak-
ness, but the word of the oath, which came after the
law, appoints the Son who has been perfected for-
ever” (Heb. 7:26-28). His qualifications are evident.
First of all Jesus is Holy. The word “holy” in a
moral sense means “pure, sinless, upright, and holy.” God
is so holy that He cannot look upon sin. This means that
God cannot approve of sin in any way! Because Jesus is
holy, He understands the seriousness of sin, that it cannot
be dismissed as if it were nothing to be concerned about.
Secondly, Jesus is harmless. In all His actions
toward men, Jesus showed a life perfectly innocent, free
from all craft and malice. This word indicates a person who
is kind, benevolent and gracious toward all (I Peter 2:21-
23). As our high priest Jesus cares about us and so will-
ingly made the sacrifice for us and continually makes inter-
cession for us. Thirdly, Jesus is undefiled. The Greek
word aniantos means without spot, immaculate. According
to Robert Milligan, “It here denotes that Christ is never, like
the Levitical priests, disqualified for the permanence of His
duties in consequence of any personal defilement…He is
constantly purifying others, but he is himself never defiled.”
Next, Jesus is separate from sinners. Jesus
came to this earth “in the likeness of sinful flesh” (Rom.
8:3), lived among sinners, received sinners, ate with sin-
ners, was known as the friend of sinners, yet He is sepa-
rate from sinners. I believe this simply means that Jesus
never partook of the sin in which all the others were partak-
ers. Jesus never sinned! Hebrews 4:15 – “For we do not
have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our
weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are,
yet without sin.” Then finally let us
notice that Jesus has been made higher than the heav-
ens. It seems that this is to express that Jesus has been
given the position of authority over the entire created uni-
verse. Just before His ascension back to heaven Jesus
told the disciples, "All authority has been given to Me in
heaven and on earth” (Mt. 28:18).
Jesus as our high priest has accomplished
for us what the other high priests could not do and that was
to make the perfect sacrifice that would take away our sins.
The other high priests had to make continuing sacrifices
year after year for “But in those sacrifices there is a re-
minder of sins every year” (Heb. 10:3). However it is not
that way with Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. The Hebrew
writer tells us that “by one offering He has perfected for-
ever those who are being sanctified” (Heb. 10:14).
