Joseph Sam Fulton conducted research, planning, and production for an FMP evaluation project. His strengths included thorough magazine research that helped define his theme and format. However, his research took longer than expected. For planning, he explored multiple ideas before selecting a final design, but he didn't plan the magazine adequately. He managed his time well initially but some slides took longer than expected. His magazine and logo matched his intended mature audience well but his website design was inconsistent and lacked focus. With more time, he could have improved the planning and website to create a more cohesive product.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
3. Research
• Strengths - The strengths of my research was the fact that I was able to research magazines and experienced what they
look and how they should be constructed, which helped me understand the format of how I was going to make my
magazine. My magazine research also helped me in understanding of what theme and genre I was going for. I also made a
questionnaire of questions to help me understand what my audience were interested in seeing in my magazine and in the
rest of my products. The questionnaire was mainly focused on my magazine as that is my main product. Also that was one of
the things I was most unsure about. Another strength about my research was the fact that I could research a good logo and
understand what colours I shouldn’t use and what colour would look appropriate with the magazine product. Researching
the logo would also allow me to understand not patterns and creations to make without copying other logos, to prevent
them from looking like another. Another strength of my research would be the fact that I searched website makers to find
the best one to use, to make my website look the best it could look. Once found I was then able to search for other game
websites on the internet, this helped in understanding how the layout of it was made and what makes a good looking
website. Another strength of my research was myself researching audio interviews and seeing how game companies make
them. This allowed to make a good, interesting game interview with a couple of people, that matched that of other
interviews on the market.
• Weaknesses – The weaknesses of my research was that it took longer than I originally expected and I ended up rushing it
because I started running out of time. Which ended up making my research look mediocre at best. Another weakness was
the fact that I didn’t really get a lot of information back from my questionnaire, so I couldn’t really get a good idea of what
my audience was interested in, which let me down a bit. Also the questionnaire was reasonably time consuming, so I
potentially wasted a bit of time doing that when I could have been investing more time in some of the earlier slides in the
research PowerPoint.
4. Planning
– Strengths – The strengths of my planning was that I was able to get a clear idea of what I wanted to get my product like.
Another strength that I got form my planning was that I was able to make a couple of ideas before I settled on my final idea.
Which allowed me to be able to have a go at trying different things, move things around that perhaps looked out of place. It
allowed to broadcast my ideas into different ideas I had until I finally decided on my final design. The planning helped my
product because I believe that it saved me a lot of time, as if I went into my final product knowing only half of what I wanted to
do then I wouldn’t have produced a good enough or as good of a piece of work as I have. As I would have contemplated things
all the time as I had everything planned out. A big strength of my planning was probably my logo experiment. As that was the
one I was least sure about. So I made a plan of it and it gave me a great idea of what my final design was going to be.
– Weaknesses – The weaknesses of my planning was that I didn’t really plan my work enough, especially the main magazine part.
So if I could I would turn back and plan that a bit more, so I didn't’t go into it completely blind and figure out what I wanted to
do. Another weakness was I may have spent too much time planning my work as well. As I only practiced one thing but that
one thing took too long to make, for a practice anyway. So it intervened with the rest of my work, when it really shouldn’t have.
I feel as though I should have done more plans as mentioned above only doing one was a definite mistake. Doing more plans
even for my logo would give me a clearer idea of what to do and would make what I I’m trying to showcase so much more
professional and better. Just doing this would have made my product look miles better.
5. Time Management
• I think I managed my time alright but it definitely could have been better. I gave myself quite a lot of work load so It was a
struggle to achieve everything in a short period of time but I managed it as well as I could. I would of loved extra time to
produce my final products as I really wanted everything I did to be perfect, so I spent more time on everything than I would
normally do. So with additional time I wold be able to make my work so much more attractive and better. I did however
manage my time well at the start before my production started. So I think if I was granted additional time then my product
would have been perfect. Also on occasional times, slides took longer to do than others so I spent more time and sometimes
went over on the deadline due to the fact I was over working myself on particular slides.
6. Technical Qualities
The product on the left is my product, the one on the other is the real life magazine product. The similarities of my product and the one
on the right is that they both feature a game on the cover that is themed around the game. For example the product on the right is
themed around the game of “Battlefield 1”, whilst my game is themed around “Red Dead redemption 2”, hence the background and the
font of it, is a red shade and the Battlefield one is grey and dark, to perhaps symbolize the war theme. Another similarity is the use of
our own individual logos, mine shown in the top left hand corner, whilst there's shown in the center of the top of the page. My product
is also similar to the one on the right as we both include plugs and little sub texts to intrigued the audience more than we already do
with the game them in the back. We also are similar in the way that we both include barcodes within both of the covers, that adds
professionalism and makes the magazines look ,much better. The differences between my product and the product on the right is that
the one of the right includes more information about other games whilst mine sticks very much to one game. Another difference is that
the layout of each of our game covers our different and look different in color.
7. Technical Qualities
The similarities between the two logos is the main colour difference, the Xbox logo is green whilst my colour scheme sticks with being a
dark shade of black. I have chosen the black as no other games logo is black, I didn’t want my viewers being confused thinking my logo was
that of something else. Another similarity is that the logos are entirely in capitals, I think we have both done this because it makes both of
the logos stand out and people are able to see them more clearly. Another similarity is that both logos seem to have an image and text to
go with it. To indicate that everybody knows the name of the logo. The difference between the two logos is that the product on the right
looks more casual and seems as though it would have a younger audience whilst I believe my logo looks more mature and adult than the
one on the right. Another difference is that my logo could be branded on other things than a magazine, whilst it seems the logo on the right
seems as though it could only be gaming orientated.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work does look really good and I think the things I have presented on it are very creative if I’m being modest. A lot of my
product is very visually good to look at and I’m pleased with everything that I included within and the content of each individual
product. Although there is a one page spread of my magazine that I think didn’t live up to the others, which I have mentioned
throughout and that’s the Dark soul 3 review. As it wasn’t really clearly structured and it looked a bit messy, than the previous work I
had created. Other than that though I think everything else was more or less perfect and I think that is reflected within my peer
feedback. Perhaps another aspect of my product I would have improved would have been the design and the information located on
my website. As it just seemed a bit sparse and a bit isolated to the rest of my work, which I didn’t really like, I also would have liked to
incorporate my audio interview on there but I just didn’t have the time to manage it.
Strengths – I think the big strengths of my product was my magazine and my logo as they fit my main product audience and they look
very mature and fitting. My logo feels as though it would fit any genre of something. For example a film magazine or a radio/tv based
genre. Another strength is that every product I produced all seems to flow of each other and is easily understandable what the main
purpose of my product is. Also reflecting back on my magazine, upon reading it you will realize that the language and the way I have
worded thing is mature and correct. Reading it, it appeals to an older audience because of it but stays young with the design of the
reviews.
Weaknesses – I think the big weaknesses of my product was my website. I really wasn’t pleased with it what-so ever. It seems out of
place compared to the magazine and the logo and doesn’t really fit that design and colour scheme as I have chosen with my other
products. The information stated on the website isn’t my information but the website placed it there to keep my magazine updated and
detailed. Like I mentioned with the colour scheme, I don’t think I could make up my mind with the audience age range as my website
looks very professional and definitely older than what I am going for. Instead what I should of done was a bright colour or a cinematic
gaming background, as this would have appealed to multiple age groups and still would of looked good.
9. Audience Appeal
My product in some areas appeals to my audience and some it does not. The reason behind this is I got lost when making my website
and it came off looking second best, with myself not knowing how I wanted to design my website and how I wanted it to look. This
then came of as the website looking nothing like I visualized and nothing like how my audience would want to see it. In saying that
though I managed to produce three other great products that I know my dedicated audience would like and what to see more. For
example my magazine that I created is educational and fun at the same time, applying to my older members of my audience but
sticking young with the games and not so educational side. The magazine also supplies great reading material and even if you’re not so
crazy about games it’s a great thing to just read. For my younger audience members say 15 and 16, I have made a youngish looking but
still cool and cinematic front cover for my magazine that I know my audience will appreciate and judging from my questionnaire they
definitely will. Like I take care of my younger audience I like to take care of my older, so I have featured some games in there that are
18+ so that any of my younger audience who reads it, wont really understand but it will still apply to them as they could learn some
great things from it. Looking at my logo its very much that of the same as my magazine but obviously just a lot more simpler. My logo
appeals to my audience in the same way as my magazine, it entices younger and older generations as the style of it is mature yet
young. I made it that why to signify that my audience is open to all ages.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The products all have a lot of information on the games that were spoken about including opinions
which really help readers to make their own personal decisions on what they think of the game if
they’ve never seen it before, or give them a second opinion if they're unsure on their own.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– No paragraphing, no sub-headings and no links to external websites to read more.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• I really enjoyed the magazine part of this product a lot. As I think it was excellently produced and looked really good. The
front cover looked professional and looked as if it belonged in a shop, as it was very realistic. Pretty much all of the pages
looked as if they were real. The logo I really enjoyed as well, as it looked very formal and fitted the genre that this person
was going for. The website was enjoyable to view and really interesting to look at, so I enjoyed that.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• A few improvements could be made to this product for example the website didn’t really have loads of information on it,
which I would have liked to see but other than that the website was really good, so maybe just including a few more
paragraphs, it would have made the product look miles better. Another improvement would have been to change the layout
of one of the magazines as I didn’t feel as though the Dark Souls 3 one was as effective as the others.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• I liked a few of the magazine covers and enjoyed the double page spread ideas. The website was good and looked
informative. The logo was also very well done and looked professional and stood out amongst other logos on the market, it
also didn’t match any colours that other big companies have used.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• There isn’t really a lot of improvements to this product as thought it was very good. Only one striking one I could think of
though was probably the dark souls 3 review page as it just didn’t compare the greatness of the other two. So maybe if the
person spent a bit more time on it, it may have been better.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• I agree with a lot of what people have said about my feedback: I liked and agreed with the fact that people are stating that I
am including a lot of information within my magazine and website, I also agree with how people have said that my logo
looks and seems very professional as that was the look I was intending for. All the feedback presented about the logo was all
positive and agreed with all of it. I agree with the fact that one person liked my opinions and thoughts throughout my work,
as that was one of the things I was most concerned about.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
• I would disagree with a few things from my peer feedback, one of those things being the information of my website, as I
thought that the information I included was relevant and important and didn’t go over the top and overwhelm my viewers.
Another thing I disagreed with was the no paragraphing and the bad skills used on the “Dark Souls 3” review page. As I feel
as though to criticise that, is a little harsh and unfair. As the work and the information included was good and the
paragraphing was fair in my opinion. Also I think that the Dark souls 3 page was on par with the rest of the work that I was
producing and I wasn’t rushing to finish it, like one person suggested.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
The changes that I would make based upon my peer feedback would be the page that people didn’t really enjoy as it didn’t really
match up to the rest of my work. As looking back on it I can understand the problem of the dark souls 3 page, it did look a bit
rushed and a bit different to the rest of the work I produced. So if I could go back I would change that and make it look a bit more
presentable than it already does. Another change I would make would probably be the fact that I could include more information
on my website as looking back on it did look a bit sparse and a bit bare, instead of a informative website that I originally wanted to
produce. I think changing it would make the website look more appropriate and look more symbolic of an actual website, as
looking at it at the minute it just looks image based and empty. Another change I would also do would be to include a internal link
from my magazine to my website as that would have added professionalism and made my product as a whole look better and
more beneficial to the rest of my products. Also having a internal link onto my magazine would have been a great idea to
advertise my website and get more people to view it, which would have helped me get my product out there.
