Luke evaluated his FMP project which included a magazine and poster about video games. For his research, he surveyed people and looked at existing gaming magazines for inspiration. He knew games well so could include more detail. His planning went well since he knew his topic in advance. He managed his time efficiently, completing the magazine, badge, and poster on time using Photoshop. The magazine cover and double-page spread have appealing bright colors that match his target audience's preferences. The poster and magazine title are large and bold as his audience preferred.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Research
• I thought the strengths for my research is that I already knew what I wanted to do for my FMP and that
was to do a magazine and a poster and then that helped me for what I wanted to do and then I could focus
on developing the research and less om thinking what I wanted to do. Another strong point would be that
I did it about games I could write more about that certain thing but if it was about music then I would
know less about it and then the detail I would put into the things I make would be less but if it was about
games there would be more detail.
• I began by doing some Primary research, through doing surveys on survey monkey and doing interviews
on people looking at my work. I then did some secondary research through looking at gaming magazines
online and getting ideas by looking at them and then seeing what I can add to my own work.
• The weakness for the research would be that I knew what I wanted to do and then that would restrict me
from other ideas and then I would of just focused on that main idea the thinking about other ideas such as
a album cover or something else like a small pixel game. Another weakness is that I could have done a
different magazine instead of games but that’s my strong point to write about or make products on
Photoshop.
• The things that I learnt from doing research is that I now know how to lay out a magazine and all the other
pages in them such as the double page spread and this will help me with the final product because I am
making a magazine and I want to set it out right.
• The things that was as useful when I was doing my research for my product is looking at the game, this is
because I already knew what games I wanted to do about and I already knew what to write about them on
the double page spread, all I was doing is looking at games what I could add as a extra.
4. Planning
• For the planning the strengths would be that I already knew what I was wanting to do so I
knew what to plan so I could develop my planning and then I could extend my planning and
then make it better and better. Another strength for planning would be that if I didn’t like the
idea of something then I could of changed one of the things that I want to do and then
change it to something better and then develop on that.
• With the planning I started off by thinking what Im going to add into the magazine and how
its going to be laid out for the magazine. The things that I learnt form my planning is that its
better to plan so you know what you are going to be doing rather then just starting it off
without doing any planning.
• With the health and safety it would be with body ache to avoid that you will just have to keep
your posture up. For the schedule I will keep it in order so I will do part of my work one day
and another bit another day so I will be kept I do it in order.
• The weakness would be that I might of changed things from my planning say if I was going do
a film poster I might of changed it to a poster about a game or I might of changed other
things what I didn’t want to do.
• The things that was not as helpful for the planning would be that if I was planning to add
more then I was going to then it would have been a waist of time because I didn’t want to
add too much to the work.
5. Time Management
• With the time management I managed it well because I had more time left to make something else and I have already made a magazine
what contains a cover, double page spread and a merchandise page. I also have made a badge for clothing and the badge was the first
thing that I made, I went through a lot of changes with the badge because with the experiment I made it so it was green and the start
with a different shape inside of it and then I changed it to red and black because I thought it would look better. Then I moved on to
making the cover of the magazine and I had a lot of changed with that I just had a blank colour on it then I moved on to making it so it
had actual picture of a game so it looked like a gaming magazine. The next step would be that I made a merchandise page and the
badge on it and then pictures of clothing with my logo on it and the final step would be that I have made the double page spread
• With the time manage I had access to all the software I needed so that didn’t effect how much time I needed to complete my work. The
things that took the longest was the cover, this is because it went through big changes because I wanted to make the cover two colours
what was red and white and the game logos at the bottom of the image. Then I decided to change the cover photo and what was on it
completely I changed it to a image of a game what was coming out because all the other games that was on it so I thought that the
game what wasn’t released would be the big image on the cover of the magazine and I removed some of the games what was on the
bottom of the screen and left two of the bigger games that was out.
• And the other things that I made didn’t take as long because with the double page spread all I needed to do was find a image what
fitted the size of the screen and then find good photos of the games that I was wanting to talk about and then I talked about them. And
with the merchandise page all I did was get images of designs on my clothing and then put them on a image and then put a black box
around them all and with the background I made it red and white to fit the colour scheme of the badge and clothing.
• I think It went well because I was able to get all my work done within the time I was given and one piece of my work went through a big
change and I added more such as a poster what I made with the extra time that I had making out final products.
• Using Photoshop allowed me to make the magazine quickly and efficiently because I was able to edit parts of the work what I wanted to
say If I wanted to put a bit of a image over the title Photoshop allowed me to do that
6. Technical Qualities
With the similarities. The titles on
the magazines stand out and
even with the apple over part of
the title and part of bricks head is
over the magazine title you can
still tell what the title says.
Another thing that is similar is
that with the titles of the games
what are both in the middle of
the page it tells you what the
game is and also stand out
Another similar thing about both
magazines with the main game
they both have the actual game
title for the cover of the magazine
with mine its crash bandicoot and
there is more detail in that logo
and with the borderlands one its
just a bald logo with a black
outline.
The differences between my
magazine and the actual
magazine. They are that on
the other magazine they
have a bar at the top of the
magazine saying something
about a game on pc
And another difference will
be that the title on the pc
magazine looks more like a
gaming magazine title where
as mine is a font off a
website and I found the one
what looks most like a
gaming magazine title.
One other difference would
be that the pc magazine has
more information about the
games that are on the cover
where as mine have less text
but have the actual game
title on it so you know what
the game is.
The tools I have used to make this magazine cover is the lasso
tool, I used that tool to get the apple go over the title of the
magazine I did this because when I looked at other magazines
you can see some part of an image and its over the title but you
can still tell what the title says.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
With the double page spread I have
made it so its crash bandicoot I thought
this was creative because you can see
the other games what are state of
decay, borderlands 3, read dead
redemption 2 and Jurassic world and
then left room on the right side of it so
crash bandicoot could stand there and
then you would know that crash
bandicoot is the main thing on the
double page spread
With the front cover of the
magazine and the double page
spread they are aesthetically
pleasing because none of the
colours clash and they fit well
together and with the titles of
the games I text for the games I
have added a stroke so they
stand out and then you can
read them better. Another
reason why they are
aesthetically pleasing is that I
have used the actual titles for
the games so the people will
know what they are when they
look at them The things that I
would improve for the cover is
that with the title I would make
it so the stroke is more white
and less transparent and more
like the other text
With the spider man poster I thought it was creative
because when I looked at posters they were just a picture
of the character on the side of a building so mine about
the game not the films so I thought I would make it look
different to the others and put some information and the
title on it. It is also aesthetically pleasing because all the
colours match and they fit well together
For the connotations for these
products that I have made are
mostly bright colours such as red,
blue, orange, white, yellow and all
these colours have connotations of
hope, joy, warm. With the crash
bandicoot it appeal to my target
audience because they wanted to
see a bright colours and with them
games its full of bright colours and
the front cover of my magazine has
a lot of bright colours.
8. Audience Appeal
All of the parts that I
have made for my FMP I
have made it so most of
it follows the target
audience. For example
they wanted brighter
colours over darker
colours so when I went
to make the poster and
magazine I made it so
they had bright colours
such as crash bandicoot
that game has bright
colours so I used that
game so it would stand
out more then a game
like Skyrim what is more
of a darker game.
When I did my survey
and when it came to the
title for the magazine or
the logo they wanted it
to be bigger and bolder
rather then smaller so
that what I did for my
magazine cover and
with the spider man
poster I made it so the
title stands out and with
the spider man poster I
added a stroke for it and
the text so it fitted the
theme of spider man
with red and blue.
With the target audience, the age range is 16-19, gender
will be primary male and secondary gender is female.
The social status is middle class. Psychographic is
balanced this is because balanced want to be successful
and I also want my products that I have made to do well.
My content appeals to my audience because when I did
my surveys I added all the things that they want into my
products so that’s why my products appeal to the
audience
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I like that you have used crash because he is a old vintage
PlayStation character that has moved to multiple consoles and
also has been remade to give it a better view point on next gen.
this makes me like this because its bringing the old back
whereas most games are all new.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– I think you should add more designs to your work to give it a
better variety of the games you have taken from the consoles.
– Make it more detailed in Photoshop so there is a larger variety
of products that are for your final major project.
– Was completed by 17 year old male
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– One thing I liked about the front cover is that the topics are all relevant to the current times
and they do show that some research has gone into the topic selection. Also I like that the text
is very legible.
– One thing I like about the double page spread is that the quality of the content provided is
presented to a high quality.
– One thing I like about the poster is the colours as the all match, which show consistency.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– One thing that could be improved on the front cover is the quality of the images and making
sure that the photos that you use are either not edited at all or fully changed. This would help
because the calibre of work would increase which would make the work better.
– One thing that could be improved about the double page spread is that some of the images
sourced have been stretched out which makes it harder to see. Changing this might leave
more room for content to exist.
– One thing that could be improved on the poster is writing because the writing isn’t legible at
all. Changing the text would improve the quality. Also the quality of the web behind
Spiderman isn’t good at all as you can see the pixels forming the web.
– Was done by 16 year old male
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– It looks very realistic, you could mistake it for an actual magazine
– It has a good amount of text on the cover
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The background for the Spiderman one is too plain, you should add
more colour.
• Add more text to the double page spread
– Was done by 18 year old female
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– I agree that all the topics for the magazine are relevant because it’s a gaming
magazine and all the things that are on there are all about games and nothing
else. I agree with the quality of the double spread image because it’s a really
detailed image. One of the feedbacks said that you could mistake it for an
actual magazine, I agree with this because in my own opinion I think it looks
like an actual gaming magazine because most of hem have a game on the
front of it and mine does and mine also has similar features what other
gaming magazines have. One of them said to find a more detailed image for
the front cover I agree with this because I think the image for the cover is
quite blurry and could find a better image but I thought that was the best one
I could find.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I disagree with adding more information to the double page spread because I
don’t want it to be too full because if it was then it would look to full. Another
thing that I disagree with that I should add more detail to the work, I have
added what I wanted to add and it was all done on Photoshop.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
With the feedback that I received I would improve my work by finding better imaged
with higher resolution image but the same image. Another thing that I will improve is
that I would of added another game onto the double page spread so there would have
been a bit more information on the double page spread. For the poster I would of
added a background to the poster and get rid of the spider man web because I think
that would make the poster look better and make it have more of a spider man feel to it
and if the image was him on top of a building about to jump off it that would make it so
there is more of a spider man feel to it.
The changes that I will make to my work, I would get better images for the spider-man
due to the web in the background been pixelated and the writing been hard to read I
would change them and change the colour of the text so it would be easier to read
If the colours were swapped around. And with the cover page I would also find a better
image so it looked less zoomed in because with the cover page it does look a bit
zoomed in.
