The document provides an evaluation of the student's FMP project involving the creation of a music magazine. In the research section, the student describes annotating magazines of different genres to inform their magazine design. Their weaknesses included only annotating two magazines rather than a wider range. For planning, their strengths were thoroughly exploring ideas before choosing to do a music magazine focusing on their passion and knowledge of music. Weaknesses included less developed planning for alternative ideas. Feedback praised the visual design and color scheme but suggested improvements like introducing context before the interview and coordinating fonts more consistently.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Research
• The strengths of my research were that I annotated 2 different genres of magazines, these are
alternative and then mainstream pop magazines. I did this so then I’d have a wider range of
research done. This would help me choose which kind of magazine I wanted to make and see what
kind of platforms they both have. This way I could see what audience I could aim my magazine at
and then create accordingly. The magazine covers that I annotated were very detailed and I made
sure to talk about the different parts of a magazine such as the masthead, and the cover pictures.
This made it easier to make my product, because I took inspiration from the different magazines
and made a blend of the two I researched. The inspiration I took was the way the masthead and
the style of it, I took the ‘simple but effective’ idea from the billboard magazine, because I believe
magazine covers look better when they don’t have loads of pictures and captions all over them. It
makes them look childish and unprofessional, I think and if you want your magazine to be taken
seriously then you wouldn’t do it. The research I did also helped me with some of the terminology
that is used throughout this PowerPoint, for example, I would not know what a masthead is if it
was not for this.
• The weaknesses of my research is that I feel like even though there was a mix of different genres of
magazine, but there was only 2, when I could have done 3 and covered more ground on different
genres and how to get to their audience. If I had more of a range of magazines, then maybe my
magazine would have been different and more interesting to look at and read. To improve, I could
have had a wider knowledge of different magazines and applied that to my magazine , then my
magazine would have been a lot different as I would have made it so that It portrays all of the
genres I explored. The effect this would have had on my product would have been good as it would
be different from what it is now, it would have been a fusion of maybe like pop, rock and
alternative.
4. Planning
• The strengths of my planning were that I had a few good ideas and explored them all
thoroughly before deciding on what my project was going to be about. These ideas were
a Gaming magazine, a Fashion magazine and a Music magazine. All my ideas were good,
but the one I wanted to carry forward and complete, was the music magazine, as I have
a passion for music. I know things about music, and bands, so I thought I could use my
knowledge to make a good magazine. My plan was very detailed, and everything that I
included in my magazine Id already seen in other magazines, but I’d obviously changed it
up and made it unique in my own way to avoid copyright, and because I like to make
things my own. This plan helped my product because it made me more prepared so I
knew what I was doing, and I could go back at any time and look at my plans whenever I
needed to.
• The weaknesses of my planning are that all the magazines that I planned for, the
planning for the ones that weren’t my main idea wasn’t as developed as it could have
been, it was detailed but I feel like I could’ve done better in my detail. If I had have done
more detailed ideas, I may have been more open to different ideas and maybe not done
a music magazine, and explored something different. If I had done this I think my
magazine would have been different as I would have chosen to go down a different
route and out of my comfort zone.
5. Time Management
• My time was managed in a good way, I finished my magazine for the
deadline given, but I feel lie if I was given more time, I could have done
better as my magazine would have been more developed and I would
have been able to change things around within it, as I would have had
time to see how I liked where pictures went and if they could have gone in
a different place than where they were. I would have made big changes to
my product if I had the time to do so. I would have maybe changed the
colours or pictures used, or maybe even changed the content of the
double page spread, this is because even though I am happy with what I
have produced, there is always room to improve on everything.
7. Technical Qualities
In my magazine, I made it with a design that was aimed at a
certain audience. I wanted to make it look as professional and
like a magazine as possible. The magic wand tool was the
most used tool. In these magazines that aren’t mine, it seems
like they are set out in a similar way to what mine is. They are
similar as on the cover they have the masthead on the top
instead of anywhere else. They are different because the
others aren’t as simple as mine, as I wanted to go for a simple
but effective theme as I think that if you have too much
happening on the front cover, then it gets confusing and the
main theme of the magazine gets thrown away.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks good as I think the visual design fits with the conventions of magazines
well. The colour scheme is attractive and eye catching, and fits in with the gender of the band
and the audience of the magazine. The images are of a good quality, they are not blurry or
pixelated and they are edited well. It was a unique magazine as it was simple and didn’t have
lots of different things over the front cover, just one singular picture with a few titles and
subtitles, the masthead, and one picture of another band. I chose to do this on purpose to try
make it look different, and I also think that less is more with magazines as sometimes if too
much is on the front cover it makes it look unprofessional and like its made for children. It was
creative, in the aspect of making it, the magazine itself was just like most other magazines aside
from the cover because there isn’t much you can do to make something that’s been done so
many times different. My cover and double page spread were visually pleasing as I made sure to
colour coordinate my covers writing with the clothes that the band was wearing to try make it
look a little more coordinated and professional, and visually pleasing. I can improve on this
magazine by changing the double page spread so then I have an introduction to the interview so
the readers would know the context of the interview instead of me going straight into it. I would
change this by adding in the paragraph to my article. A strength to my magazine is that it is
colourful and informative on the band, it is successfully directed towards the planned audience.
A weakness of my magazine is that it could be written better because I felt like it was slightly
rushed instead of done in better detail with better grammar and wording, with an introduction.
9. Audience Appeal
I have appealed to my audience by making sure I covered things in the
magazine that I know they would like. My target audience was 12-15 year
olds, of either gender, as this magazine does not have one certain gender
audience. They are of middle class, as middle class people will have the time
and money to spend on this magazine. People of other classes may be a lot
busier. The psychographic audience for this magazine is balanced. This is
because I want them to respond to the concepts of success and it benefits
mankind, especially the band itself. It also benefits the fans of this band and
makes them happy. I included the bands as I know that there are hard-core
fans for both of the bands I included, and they would like it. I made sure the
questions asked within the interview were professional questions that fans
would still be interested in.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
I like the fonts for the magazine and I think it suits it well with
the band and their style. Another thing that I like is the blue logo
behind the writing and also goes well with the logo.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
Where the writing is above the names if that was the same font
as the title and the writing I think that would make the magazine
look better. And the same with the front cover if the red writing
was the same as the title and the writing.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like how it has pictures of the band and the band
logo on the back.
– I like how you pretended to be the band members and
still managed to make an engaging interview.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– I would maybe change the colour of fonts in certain
areas, e.g. In front of the band logo or on her front
cover in the bottom right.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
The visual design fits with the conventions of magazines
well and the colour scheme is attractive and eye catching.
The images are of a good quality resolution and it is clear
that the content is an interview.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
There should have been an opening introduction to the
interview, a short paragraph hooking the audience in to
give context as to why they are having an interview and
introduce the page.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the feedback given. The things that were
commented on, when I look I agree with what they are
saying because I can see that it would look better like this
as well. The fonts could have been a little more colour
coordinated and similar than what they were. I also
agree that I should have put a little introduction to the
interview, to give the reader a little bit of an explanation
on what's going on. I agree that the colours used were
nice.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I did not disagree with anyone criticism.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
The changes I would have made would have been to add
in an introduction paragraph before the interview, so
then the readers know what's going on instead of it just
going straight in. I also would have changed the fonts of
the magazine to co inside with the other fonts I’d used
to make it look ore professional and fun. I would have
also moved a few pictures and probably completely
changed my double page spread, as I didn’t really like it.
I enjoyed making it, but I do not think it was made to
the best of my abilities.
