    1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
       real media products?

When beginning my front cover research, I began to look at aspects of balance, symmetry,
Guttenberg’s principle and the rules of thirds. I also took great interest in different designs used to
constructed different front covers music magazines use.

The house style of my own music magazine consists of the colours purple and white. I did this
because this is one of the ways my own music magazine follows conventions of real life music
magazines as they use only a small sample of colours through there magazine, therefore I did the
same. This therefore keeps the house style of my magazine and also keeps is consistent and
professional as I followed the principle of other magazines that are real life.

When taking into consideration my masthead, I used the font “Arial Rounded MT Bold” at size 217pt.
The reason I used this font was because I believe it gives a clean, cut look and doesn’t take all the
attention of the magazine. I think the fonts eye-catching yet simple to give the magazine a classy
look. The reason I chosen the size was so the masthead took over the top of my front cover so it was
eye-catching and would stand out to other magazines. The colour of my masthead is white and
purple and fades from one colour to another. I did this as I thought it was unique and gives the
simple text an edgy look to it which fits in perfectly with the genre of my magazine being R’n’B. This
is because the colours are funky and up-beat and the music inside my magazine gives off the same
vibe.

The imagery used on my front cover is a mid shot of two models. Bot6h models are making eye-
contact/direct address to the camera which is an important convention followed by real life
magazines therefore it is important for myself to follow. With the models making direct address, the
reader is immediately attracted to the photo and therefore to the magazine the models are on.
When editing my image, I used new technology on a phone 4. I used the app. Instagram which I used
the editing technique of Brannon. I thought Brannon was best to use as it gave the photo a rough
look but also edgy and this made the image eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing.

Contents page -

My double page spread has balance of imagery and text. I took the idea from Q magazine for making
one page dedicated to a full image and writing on the next page. I did this as it gives the double
page spread an edgy, yet classy look to it. I kept the masthead the same as my front cover with the
name of the band being big and eye-catching and fading from one colour to another. I did this as I
wanted to keep my house style of the magazine on every page as this links in with the principle of
keeping the house style to every page. The image I used is in black and eye using a shadow effect
around the main point of the image. This is to make the faces and eyes in focus and thisbackground
faded out. This is eye-catching and making a bold statement about the models in my image. I made
the photo black and white because I wanted to keep it simple as the double page spread has allot
going on.

    2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is aiming to target people who enjoy the genre of R’n’B and I did this by adding in artist
on my front cover and contents page so people who are a fan of these people can pick up my
Abbey Moss Media Presentation

magazine. I also did this by the design of my music magazine and the house style I have used
through-out. This is because I have used simple but edgy fonts and designs to grab peoples attention
when looking at the magazine. I believe my masthead on the front page of my magazine almost
relates with ‘Q’ magazine as they are both letters which have a meaning are are bold but have a
stylish font to them. I also believe the masthead is correct for people of the target audience age as
its a cool, laid back font which isn’t to busy and gives out the correct information without having to
look into it and think about it. The name of my magazine being ‘FVOX’ means februarys very own
kiss and this relates with R’n’B star drake who recently in a song sung about ‘OVOX’ which means
Octobers very own kiss and that is his birthday, so when creating the magazine, I decided to take
that saying and turn it into my own by using the month of my own birthday and then turning it into a
masthead for my own magazine. This name however then links in with big upcoming artiest which
people want to read about.

    3. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my media product would be people aged between 16 – 25 and also people who
enjoyed the music R’n’B. This is because my magazine is aiming to attract young readers who are
interested in this type of genre of music and who may be interested in buying a music magazine
giving them the latest details on there favourite artiest and there latest album releases and tour
dates. When undertaking my market research, I did a questionnaire which I passed around to may
different people which varied from age and gender and different opinions on genres of music. When
taking into consideration of the gender I am going to target with my magazine, the highest answer
was males and therefore my magazine will try to target most of the imagery and design towards
them and that is why the main band I am interviewing is a girl band as this is good for the eye for a
male when looking and buying the magazine. A problem I come across when creating my magazine
fore the male gender, was that I couldn’t find a colour that would be eye-catching and also a
stereotyped colour for a boy, therefore I used the colour purple as I believe this isn’t to ‘girly’ and
boys would find it appealing and eye-catching to view as the rest of the house style used was white
and grey.

When creating my contents page, I decided to make sure it wasn’t to busy and had all the
information on the page and it was all easy to read and locate pages. I did this so people didn’t have
to take there time out trying to find what information is on what page and didn’t find it confusing
and difficult as this could cause stress on the reader when doing a simple task of finding a page
number. I made sure I kept the house style on the contents page so people of a younger age would
benefit from this and enjoy looking at this page.

When putting together my double page spread, I decided to dedicate a full A4 side to a picture and
the rest for writing as I believe people who aren’t as intellectually clever as others will benefit from
this as there isn’t as much writing in the article but there’s enough to put across all the information
they need to know about the band. I also used different quotes on the pictures in large contents so
people could look and get a clear idea on what the band is saying.

    4. What Kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Since I based some ideas from my magazine around the music magazine Q, I believe that the media
institution who distributes Q would be interested in my magazine as it’s similar to there own. Bauer
Abbey Moss Media Presentation

media group is a multinational media company that publishes Q and I think that they would be
interested in my magazine and would happily give it a trial in publishing next to there very own
magazine being Q. I think this as the genre is similar and therefore am Q ever became an unpopular
magazine, I think my magazine could take its place and still make the company money buy selling
and producing mine as much as they did with Q. I would also like my magazine to be produced by
this company as they are a very large company publishing 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries,
therefore my magazine could become worldwide and not just located in one country.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Before creating my magazine, I had undertaken questionnaires around my own college area and
around my home area to family and friends. I did this by friends passing on the questionnaires to
other friends so I would have a large group to pick from when analysing the results of my
questionnaires.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it
to the full product?

When creating my preliminary task, I was new to Photoshop, therefore I didn’t know how to cut
images, or add effects on to things to make them more eye-catching. I found it really difficult to
construct a layout of a magazine as I would normally make it look to busy by trying to add as many
pictures in as I could. I found it really helpful to then look at other magazines which were distributed
in the real magazine music market and this then gave me an idea of how to actually construct a
magazine and how things should be layout onto a page using the Gutenberg’s rules of thirds and
even what effects to put onto different fonts to make it look realistic. Doing the preliminary task
made me realise I would have to put allot of work in when creating my final media product as I had
to look up different layouts of other magazines and do lots of research for my target audience. I
believe doing this preliminary task was also helpful as it gave me an idea of how to work Photoshop
and gave me the basic skills to work on to then become better and gain more knowledge in the
programme.

Doing the preliminary task made me realise I would have to put allot of work in when creating my final media product as I had to look up different layouts of other magazines and do lots of research for my target audience. I believe doing this preliminary task was also helpful as it gave me an idea of how to work Photoshop and gave me the basic skills to work on to then become better and gain more knowledge in the programme.
