3. Research
• My research really helped with my production some ways, however doesn’t help in certain
other ways. The research was successful at showing me the difference between product
posters when they are targeting their different audiences. For example if a poster was
advertising a single band there would be a much heavier focus on the art style, rather than a
festival poster that is much more heavily reliant on famous names attracting people to
investigate it more.
• It also helped me to understand the techniques used on tickets and how they keep them
from being forged. Knowing these things helped in my production when allocating certain
areas to the anti fraud and the areas for the audience and ticket information.
• Doing market research helped on my target audience helped to guide my production because
it allowed me to focus more of my time onto the aspects of production that have more gain
in the overall product. For example I was originally going to make merchandise such as t-
shirts, however from my market research I found that people were not very likely at all to buy
theses, so instead I focussed much more heavily on the poster, CD cover and gig ticket as they
were much more popular ideas.
• One thing that I certainly could have improved with my research is the genres of music I
researched. As when searching for product ideas I focussed very heavily on Rock / Guitar
music. This then meant that my only real reference when I came to planning and production
was this style. Where as I should have looked a much larger range of products from different
genres as this would allow me to take lots of different influences and make my work really
unique while still representing the music that I had planned to represent.
4. Planning
• In my planning stage I worked really well when looking at colours, I used a wide range and
evaluated each mixture of colours. The benefit to looking at a range of colours allowed me to
create a very unique product that takes a lot of influences from a range of ideas, this really
helps me when creating a product, as I often change my plans and ideas during the
production phase depending on weather or not I like the overall look of what I created. Also
knowing and being able to reference a document that outlines all the ways that I can use
certain colours to represent certain feelings or locations, for example my work uses very
neon colours which work well to give my work a tropical party aesthetic.
• I also developed a few ideas based on font that I could use, having a document that I created
that lists out fonts I have pre determined would work well with my overall idea saves a lot of
time when creating my product as I do not have to look for new fonts. Outlining how each
could be used also helps because I can see where each font would work well and where it
wouldn’t so I wouldn’t have to do lots of tests with each font trying to find which works the
best.
• The actual two planned layouts were successful, this is because I used ideas for both of them
to create my final products. It is clear that the CD cover takes a lot of influence from my
second design idea which is a close up of my face with the same style font covering it.
However the first design which is a vinyl with a face on has a lot of influence on my colour
choices and caused me to go for a more tropical dance inspired look for my designs.
• However because I was creating three separate products I should have created many more
designs and planned each product more in depth. This would have allowed me to have a lot
of influences that could have made my work much more streamlined and refined. It also
would have meant I didn’t have to come up with completely new ideas for my products.
5. Time Management
• My overall time management wasn’t the strongest, this is due to me
spending to much time on certain parts of the project. It would often end
in me rushing to meet deadlines. For example it took much longer than
expected to complete the production of my project, this is mostly down
to my lack of preparing my time and scheduling in the time I needed to
write my production development.
• If I was to re do this project I would need to make sure that I had
scheduled in all of the documents that I need to create as I'm going along,
this will stop me from having to rush work out to meet any deadlines. This
will intern allow me to have more time spent on my work refining it and
making to a better standard.
6. Technical Qualities
The back cover of my CD is very different to the Arctic Monkeys cover. The arctic monkeys cover again has a much greater readability than
mine as it focuses heavily on the contrasting black and white layout. It is also different because it has a much smaller focus on the artistic
style, which is only really apparent in the fake texture behind the text. The Arctic Monkeys album also has the band name on the back of
the CD this is helpful for the audience as they are able to see clearly from a distance what band created the CD. Another thing their
album has is the side panels which make a much more box like shape to hold the CDs whereas the cover I created doesn’t have this and
represents more of a vinyl case.
So if I were to do this again I would change the shape of my cover adding in the side panels so that it was more suited to the shape of a
CD case, this is due to CDs being purchased much more than Vinyl's. I would also add the name of the CD to the back for the same reason
that ci outlined for the arctic monkeys to do this. However I would not make my text more readable because I like the artistic stance my
CD takes.
My cover has a few similarities with the Arctic Monkeys on. First of all I have put my text in the same location at the bottom centre of the
cover. This works well as it doesn't cover any of the art on the cover it also creates a clear readable text area that makes it easier to read
and recognise. However based on readability the Arctic Monkeys cover is far easier to read due to the heavily contrasting colours, this
makes it much easier to read in comparison to mine. This is due to my colour choice being very vibrant focussing on a tropical aesthetic
look than on readability for the audience. So one improvement I could make would be to use a drop shadow or outer glow on my text as
this would create a clear boarder around the text separating it clearly from the background.
7. Technical Qualities
There are a few similarities and differences between my ticket and the stone roses one. The most obvious is that all of the key
information on my ticket is located in the one box area on the left whereas the stone roses is located everywhere. Another difference is
that the stone roses ticket has a clear area that can be taken home by fans and one area that is kept by the ticket collectors. One
similarity however is that both have a large artistic appeal, even if they are very different in the way they look.
All of the information in my ticket is located in a box on the left-hand side of my ticket, in a box that has a lowered opacity as not to
completely block out the art in the back. The stone roses ticket does this as well but it also has the information on the right hand side,
and the two areas are separated by a single dotted line, this allows them to have an area that is primarily for the audience to keep which
works well for them to have an extra source of adverting for the band as people are attracted by the aesthetic of the ticket. The stone
roses ticket also presents the information in a much more interesting way that is much aesthetically pleasing compared to mine that uses
a very blocky modern text that is seen on most tickets. However this works well for my ticket as it makes the information much easier to
read, this is especially important on mine as its main purpose for the ticket is to inform rather than to advertise which I decided not to
capitalise on. However the right side of my ticket is not completely removed of information and even though it is very small you can see
then name of the band.
My ticket is in some ways better than the stone roses one, the clearest way is that my ticket has a barcode which makes it slightly harder
to copy the ticket fraudulently. However this is still an area that I could definitely improve upon on my ticket to make it even harder to
copy.
8. Technical Qualities
My poster is similar in a lot of ways to the black keys poster, not focussing on the aesthetic qualities
of it. The key similarity however is that the focus of the poster is on their aesthetic qualities and
how they attract an audience through that rather than through the use of lots of information.
Both posters have large clear fonts as the key component of letting potential audiences know what
bands are playing at the gig, this works well as it does not take away from the key bits of art on
each poster, while also giving enough information to its audience for them to be more intrigued.
Like The Black Keys poster the information such as dates and times are very small, this works really
well as it limits the amount of space taken up by writing that the audience don’t get drawn in by,
however this does mean that the rest of the poster has to draw the audience to making them want
to take in the information. However because this font is not obstructive of the art it adds overall
value, as supporters of bands often collect posters so that is another source of revenue.
9. Aesthetic Qualities
When creating my products I focussed heavily on its aesthetic quality and appeal to the audience in the way it looks without deviating
from a single style, I did this well and all of my work is very similar, creating a clear theme. However this does not mean they all appear
the same, I used lots of different colours to show the difference between each work so that each is still interesting. The style that I
used is called low poly, which is a collection of triangles with individual colours, that are joined to create an image.
When creating my work I was aiming to create a unique topical dance aesthetic, which I created really well in this piece as the purple
and reds are very vibrant giving the effect that the images were taken in a tropical location (it helps that the images were taken in a
tropical location). However the colours were not always very vibrant so I had to use a hue / saturation layer to make them pop more, I
also created bigger triangles in the brighter areas in the left side as this made the white highlight stand out much more clearly. A
clearer example of using the hue saturation tool is in the eyes where I used it to make the cyan colour of the pupils to contrast heavily
with the purple, I did this so that it looked quite psychedelic and so that it fit with the text on the page, and I accomplished this to
some extent, however I do wish that the colours were slightly brighter.
The text on both sides of the CD cover are located in very good locations, this is largely down to them being positioned in places that
doesn’t cover any part of the actual artistic design, even if the ‘Fake Band’ Does cover the lips, which I would improve if possible, except
I did not want to make the text any smaller and if I put it anywhere else it would cover something more key and make the photo less
recognisable. I also like the colouring of the text, however there are some things I would change to make ity slightly more readable, for
example I would add a drop shadow or outer glow so that it had a clearf cut out from the background, as right now the colours are very
similar making it hard to read.
10. Aesthetic Qualities
Aesthetically I really like the design of my ticket as it has all the necessary information without covering too much of
the art. The actual art is very similar to that of the CD cover. I used the same low Poly effect to create the images
unique look, however I used a different method to create the colouring. I used a gradient layer and then used
blending options to get it to work with the low poly layer. This technique worked extremely well as it created a clear
cut of from the sky and the balcony below. Not only did it do this but it also created a very tropical appearing sunset
which fits in extremely well with the overall theme of my project. However one problem with this colour change is
that it is not very clear that the large cream area is a balcony, this was more apparent before the gradient was added
on top, it was also more apparent before the low poly effect as you could see two people looking over. One way that
I could fix this would be by using smaller triangles however this would take away from the low poly effect as it would
not be as clear, using smaller triangles would also have made it clearer that the tall objects are actually palm trees.
The information box works really well as it does its job at giving the audience the necessary information In a clear
non obstructive manner, as you can still see through the white box. I used a font that is clear and easy to read while
still having quite an electronic look building on the tropical dance theme. However I would still improve this box.
Mainly I would make it much smaller so that it covered less of the overall page, this would not be too difficult as
there is already a lot of white space on the page, I would just have to condense all of the information. However if I
was not careful this could quickly make it look very cluttered overall.
11. Aesthetic Qualities
With the poster I took a different overall approach, I did the low poly effect differently, I also left much more open space and also I
didn’t use the low poly effect on the whole image. With the new low poly technique I used the line tool to draw out each triangle
rather than following a grid layout, this meant that I had much more freedom to creat tringles in a specific order, which following a
strict grid didn’t allow, this worked really well in my favour as the shapes are much more fluid in this product which meant I could have
much more defined small shadows. Having each triangle drawn with the line tool also allowed me to use the blending options tro
make them much more visible creating a unique effect on this specific image. However The actual image is one of the main things I
would change, I was originally going for a unique quite indie image which I achieved slightly however that is at the detriment of not
having a clear poster meaning people have to come closer to find out what the posters about.
The background was left flat (not low poly) mainly to a lack of time and I wish I had had time to turn the speaker pulse effect into the
low poly effect as it would have meant the whole image would fit much more thematically into the rest of the products.
One thing I do like in this poster however is the text, I used both styles I had used previously. This worked well with the them aspect of
my designs. However I like how the title is very clear on this poster as it doesn’t mix colours with the background which really allows its
gradient to shine and be clear. The small text works well as it gives enough necessary information and it is also very clear and easy to
read.
13. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the cohesion between all three products and how you can
tell that they belong together in a package.
– I loved the colour schemes used throughout the products. I feel
they were very careful used and were creative.
– My favourite element of the products were the use of the
triangles as it was new and something I had never seen before
and increased the technical difficulty of the products.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• I feel that there could have been another product to
complete the package but that is all.
14. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– Solid and consistent aesthetic qualities throughout all three products,
particularly in regards to the shaping and colouration of the images
used.
– Good use of personal photographs, have been well-adapted for use in
the products.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– While impactful, the products seem somewhat bare in favour of
the polygonal aesthetic, especially compared to the products
that are 100% polygon without any empty space.
15. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• I like the overall stylistic choice of the product with a mosaic design creates a visually
appealing display partnered with the colour scheme used in the design gives off the impulse
to purchase the product were it to go on sale.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I believe that the design over the CD case cover is slightly simplistic, I believe that it
could’ve benefited from including more on the case cover rather than focusing on the
one object.
16. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
• From the feedback I agree that all of my products
do work well as on package and that there is a
very clear theme between them all. I also agree
that my colour choice always works really well
even if it is often very bright.
• I also agree that the poster is bare and needed
more adding to it in all that empty space, I would
just add the low poly effect so that it had a full
theme throughout all of my work.
17. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I disagree that the CD case was too simplistic, I believe
that it was balanced really well as if I had added more
to it the overall design would look too cluttered
especially with the large amount of shapes in the
background of the image.
• I disagree that the my use of personal images always
worked, as I definitely should have used a different
image in the poster, this is because it looks rushed and
has no indication that it is linked in anyway to music.
