Project proposal title and date:
A Book Of Useless Maps
Main area of activity:
The medium that I am going to mostly focussed on is graphic design.
Rationale:
Over the past two years I have worked on a range of different projects; magazines, websites,
flyers, banners, short films, games and animations. The last major project I did I made the
branding and products for a band. For this I developed a unique style that I used throughout the
project, this was a low poly design that I used over the top of photographs that I had taken. This
project taught me the importance of using one specific style when developing a product or range of
products, as it builds a uniform and professional look for the brand. Another big project was a
recent magazine I made, I used a really unique neon theme throughout the magazine, however the
most important part of this magazine was the font I used. This is because it has taught me that
using the correct font is very important. In the magazine I only use two main fonts, one of the fonts
I used was meant to look like a serial killer had been writing, however the font when condensed
into a small area was extremely had to read, and this was pointed out to me by people reviewing
the magazine. So I learnt that some times it is more important to choose a more useful font rather
than choosing one focussed more on aesthetics.
When I did the animating project I learnt the importance of all minor details in a project. This is
because If I made one mistake or left a key detail out, the entire animation would have looked out
of place. This meant I would have to make lots of changes that would take time just to fix it.
Another lesson that I learnt from this project is that planning is very important, as I would not have
made as many mistakes if I had just planned better and kept a more structured schedule.
The two projects that will directly influence this project is the bands branding and my recent
fanzine as they are both the same products as the one I am currently planning on making. The
band branding will influence the advertising of the product I plan on creating and how I present it.
And the magazine will influence my project as I plan on creating some sort of book or magazine.
Project Concept:
The concept for this project is to create some form of atlas and some of the advertising for it. The
atlases however will not be created for serious use however as I intend to turn them mostly into a
style of info graphics. By this I mean the actual maps will have information or graphics of things
that represent that area. For example over the Manchester area I could have a graphic for the
band Oasis or for one of the two football clubs. There wouldn’t be any blank space as I would
hope to fill all areas of the book with some sort of information or imagery. I would intend to do two
books, one would be on England whilst the other would likely be on Europe or the USA, however
Asia could also be quite interesting as I would be able to experiment with oriental designs.
I would also be creating the advertising for this product, this will likely be in the form of a poster or
magazine ad; this ad would also work as an online ad on services like Instagram or other social
media.
For research I will need to look at theories on info graphics, such as how they are designed and
what is key to include when creating one. I will also need to research art books, as they will be
very influential, I mean books that are full of doodles, ones that people normally fill in them selves,
as it will be the same sort of audience. The type of fonts that are used will also be very important;
as I need to make sure that it there is a running theme throughout the book in every aspect. To
help I could also look at more mature atlases to see if I am able to take inspiration and enhance
the overall design of the serious version I will be creating.

Week Tasks to be Completed: Specific Tasks
1 Pre-production Proposal and background research: This week I
will focus on creating a basic principal and idea
for my work, I will then look at a range of subjects
and theory’s that will help me to understand my
project more clearly.
2 Pre-production Research- Secondary: This week I will look at
products that are similar top my idea to see how
they use certain techniques and also to learn how
they use these techniques to work on their target
audience.
I will also look at things that could impact and
hinder my work such as licensing.
3 Pre-production Research- primary: This week I will conduct
research myself, I will base this research around
my target audience and what I have research in
the previous week.
This will include interviews and surveys
4 Pre-production Experiments
5 Pre-production Experiments
6 Pre-production Pre-Production and planning
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I plan to evaluate my work at multiple stages throughout my project, not just after production. I will
be evaluating my work weekly; this includes the weeks where I am carrying out research. By
doing this weekly it will allow me to see where the floors in my work are and what I can improve
with it in the upcoming weeks. I will be looking at things like what areas I haven’t researched or
have not researched in the detail I would have liked. I’ll be able to see what I haven’t planned for
or need to improve on planning for and will also be able to see what improvements I can do to the
production. Once I have completed all of the production I intend to evaluate it in far more detail,
when I do this I will look at the overall appeal of my product and how my designs work for their
purpose, this includes look at things like colour, sizing, fonts and arrangement. I will talk about
everything I like about my product but will also focus on what would need to be improved if I did it
again. I will back up my own evaluation by getting reviews off of my peers, using these
evaluations to have a less biased opinion of my end product.
