2. Sci-Fi Fonts
For this book I will need a large bold font that has
a space/Sci-fi aesthetic whilst also being quite
bold. This font will be used primarily as pages
heading or as a sub heading for a block of
information.
All of theses fonts a very similar and most don’t
deviate too much from just being a simple bold
font with quite rounded edges. I think this first
font works really well and has a simple but
effective design compared to the other font. The
font uses quite harsh corners and points rather
than opting for rounded edges, this works well with the line that runs the font. The cut out line that runs through the font has a very uniform look
and works well as it is used to form letters, rather than just being placed through the centre. This font could work as a heading due to its unique
bold look, however I think I would probably just use this font as a base and use the cut-out design on a different font that looked more curvy, as
the sharp edges are not as attractive to a young audience. To use this font personally I would not have to pay, however if I used it for anything
commercial their would be a $20 charge, once paid however I would have full access to the font.
The second font is very similar in terms of shape, it does not have that cut-out line through its middle. This font has a sci-fi aesthetic, due its quite
polygonal edges, I do not think however it would work well in my book. This is mostly down to it looking too serious rather than childish which is
what I aiming for. The capital letter design also doesn’t work, I would much prefer it if they weren't any larger, as this way of showing a capital
letter feels forced, I think the design would have been nicer if the entire font was just capitals of the same size. This font does come with other
variations as well, one of which has a thin line, much like retinoid does, that runs through it, there is a variation that has a gradient fade on it, there
is a few other designs as well. This font would also be a good choice as the designer asks for a donation, rather than having a fixed price.
The third font Is the most noticeably different of theses three fonts, it stands out due to it being a white font rather than just a standard black. I
think a font that is only clear because it has a border would work really well in a pace themed book, this is due to the link to the big open areas of
space. The shape of the font also has a very standard sci-fi aesthetic due to the sharp points and straight edges that it makes use of. One problem
I have with this font is that it appears to rotate between capital letters and lower case letters, this makes the whole design look unintelligent,
which is not the impression wanted when writing a non- fiction book. This font is free for personal use, however if I want to use it commercially I
will have to contact the designer, no price is listed anywhere.
3. Sci-Fi Fonts
This font compared to the previous three appears more unique due to its use of curves, giving it a funky retro vibe. This shown by a distinct
lack of sharp corners if it can be avoided. This is not always true however and the designer has exaggerated the letter “Y”, this works though
as just this simple change makes the whole font stand out to me. Whilst having a somewhat retro aesthetic in some ways it does still have a
sci-fi aesthetic. This font would work well as a title as it is all in capitals, this does however mean I will not be able to use it in big blocks of
text. This font is by the same designer as the “Thunderstrike” font, this means that it also has multiple variations on its base design; a
gradient, half-gradient, outline with white centre and a few others. It also means that to use it commercially a donation is encouraged but no
actual money is required for personal use.
This font looks heavy, the letters are very think whilst also being compact between the top and bottom. This could be used quite successfully
in my design, I could use this font when talking about planets that will have a very strong gravity, this would link information to imagery subtly
but usefully, however I wont necessarily need this font for that as I will be able to squash any font on Photoshop. This font has a very modern
aesthetic, making use of sharp edges and corners rather than opting to use curves. A problem with this font however is the difference
between capitals and lowercase letters, the font appears to switch between the two randomly. The font is all in capitals however 13 letters
appear to have a different version when in lowercase, even though every lowercase does still look like a capital letter. I would have preferred
if the font either had a different version for each letter or just stuck to one design for each. This font also has small design within it, each
letter has dots randomly scattered within it, as it is meant to resemble space, this would link really well with the theme of the book however I
don’t think it’s a necessary way of showing the books theme and would possibly look tacky. I was unable to find any information telling me
how much it would cost to use this font, I only know that it is free for personal use.
4. Font Use
There are a few ways that I will be able to incorporate these larger fonts into my work, the way that I am most likely to
incorporate the fonts is as headings. However I will need to decide how I lay these headings out so that the designs a
cohesive and attractive throughout the magazine. The first design idea is to have large text behind the moon. I don’t
really like this as the text is far too large and it isn't clear at all what it says, the font is also slightly too cartoony as well
which I am quite apposed to. I Also don’t really like the amount of text I deleted behind the moon as well.
The second design idea is far cleaner and easy to read as the information is presented clearly over the top of the image
where it contrasts with the rest of the background. This design does however create a new problem in the fact that I
would now have lots of empty space that I would have to fill or I would have to make the background more interesting.
The third design is far more interesting mix of both the first and second design to create a new interesting look that is
still easy to read. It uses the idea of having the title repeating behind the image however instead of large hollow text I
instead opted for a smaller font with a halftone design, this then allows me to repeat the text more which makes it
easier to read and far more visually appealing. I also mixed up the font size to add more of a design to it. I also chose
to make the deleted area around the image much smaller, this was just to remove it from the text so that it didn't
contrast too much making it hard to look at.
5. Double Page Layout
• This double page spread is very simple focusing more
on making test simple and easy to read.. I will have
each pages title laid in the top centre so that it
stands out showing clearly what the page is about.
Underneath I will then have a low poly picture of
each planet, this is so that it look stylish but still
cartoony which is more appealing to kids, to achieve
this I will exaggerate the colours of each planet.
Underneath that I will have a comparison of the
current planet size against the previous planets.
• The next page will be focussed mostly on information
about the planet I am talking about, however I do
intend to have some images as well I will have to
source these from else where and may have to pay a
license fee for them. I want one image as a close up
and another image showing what the planet looks
like from earth, if it is visible.
• At the bottom of the page I want to have two
element structures and a some information about
the planets atmosphere alongside them. The two
structure will be for the most common element on
that specific planet.
6. Double Page Layout
• This design is very similar to the previous with
some minor tweeks. The planet is now much
larger and much more central so that it is the
focus point of the page as children are far
more interested in pictures than text. The
pages title is now exploding out the side of the
image as if it is flying away from the planet.
Each title will be different colours on the
different pages to make each unique.
• I will also have the majority of information on
the left page still but may now be restricted to
one image due to the increase in the planets
size.
• I have also decided to swap the pages that I
have the size comparison and the elements
on. This is due to me now only having the
most common element rather the two most
common as not all planets will have a
significant number of elements.
7. Characters
I think having a character would work really well in this book. A
few reasons for this are that it creates another thing for a young
audience to interact with and it also adds other ways that I can
present information. I like the idea of using a UFO as it would
allow me to mess with lots of different colours as it doesn't have
to be based on any kind of real object. This would also mean that
I have the ability to look at using lots of different shapes.
However using an actually space ship would probably be more
successful as it is something that the young audience will be able
to relate too it more easily as it is what they have seen in other
forms of media such as film and TV, this would also work for the
use of the astronaut character. The only problem with this is I
wouldn’t be able to customize it as much and it isnt necersarrily
as interesting to a young audiance as a UFO is.
