I like the formal format of the menu, where all different areas are all broken up
by low opacity grey rectangles that are used to house the information. This
segregates information so that it’s just easier to read and separate different areas
of the menu from one another. The colour also works, as it is not a colour that
clashes with the background or any other colours with text or other logo images.
Adam Paterson Evaluation
I really like the way that the fonts turned out. I think that the bold striking nature
of the name of the product and then with a smaller sized subtext under it
describing the food is an effective way of selling a product. By making a bold and
striking title your eyes are drawn to it, causing you to read more, hence why the
descriptive typeface is smaller and in a different font. Also the prices being in a
more formal, thin format next to the name of the product is also a formal way of
breaking the price to a customer and not hiding it away by having it as the same
font or size as anything else on the menu.
The masthead is also really effective in the way in which it delivers the title of the
page. By having a really bold, extremely thick title where the colours also
alternate, it appears as an attraction to someone who may catch this out of the
corner of their eye. Leading to a potential purchase. By having this basic, no-
nonsense title it means that nobody can get confused once glancing or looking
through the menu and makes it obvious as to what it is.
I also like the way in which the branding of the products in the drinks area is
presented, where the logos of the brands specified are ones that are being served
at the place. This is also a code and convention. By telling the customer exactly
what they are drinking it can persuade them into purchasing it as they know
exactly what brand the drink is oppose to just having a drink of the same drink.
However, I felt that if I used a less contrast filling background image that it would
appear less of an eyesore and look more visually pleasing. I feel that if I used an
image that either matches the colour scheme of the other components, such as
grey black or white then it would have fit smooth with the style.
I also would improve the sides around SNACK MENU as I think that this area
could have been occupied with something useful such as dates, times or locations
rather than the Sonder Logo repeated throughout.
Adam Paterson Evaluation
I like the size of the masthead in relation to the size of everything else on the
poster. I feel with it being this large size at the top of the poster makes it more
eye-catching and easy to understand what the poster is about. The way also that
the box surrounding the text below starts at either side of the masthead, is also a
good feature as it also gives the look as if everything is related. If I had the box
Adam Paterson Evaluation
and the masthead separate it would give an idea of segregation and that they are
not related.
I also like the urban look that the image gives off. The old broken cobbled streets
along with the orange brickwork and inner city suburb look along with the dull
lighting of the day, which softly lights the entire street instead of blowing it out
and having strong shadows that you would expect to see on a sunny day. I feel
that this effect works as the festival is set in Manchester, which is rich in its
urban and industrial history and by having a person walking down an old
cobbled streets helps go back to its roots and have that old effecting look, which
also appeals to the indie theme of the festival too. This also works too with the
Manchester Bee in each corner of the inside box. The reason that I put this in
there mainly was as it is a Manchester Symbol about the people in it, as the
working class, hard working industrial city.
I also like the sans serif font that is used on the text, I feel that this reduced
formality makes the image look a lot more appealing to the youth of today who
want to see a chilled out, laid back look to the poster that gives the effect of being
in the interest of the youth. By targeting this poster at the youth it means that the
target audience would react positively to this rather than any other audience
who may misinterpret the poster to appeal to them
The size of the font too is also something that I like, with the theme of the text
starting off largest at the top, and slowly getting smaller in font size as you go
down the poster. By also segregating the text apart from each other into different
boxes of text and having their sizes change so that it all fits means that the way
you read this poster is from the top down, rather than from the bottom up which
would be un natural and strange to look at.
However if I could change anything it would be that I would like to change the
text by adding more in so that any blank spaces are filled up by other
information. Take for example the space around the models head it feels as if
something should be in the middle of there as it is being surrounded by text and
it is unused space that could have been used.
Adam Paterson Evaluation
The formality is of a ticket is in line with other tickets that I researched. I noticed
that the more professional looking and formal tickets had a strip on the left of
them with a barcode on that usually is ripped off. Therefore I added a jagged line
that represents that fold on my ticket. Also the bottom half of the ticket
representing the formal information about the event is also good at displaying
the relevant information. The text appeared to be pixelated on some tickets I
researched, so I went onto DaFont.com and found a font that matches what I was
looking for and used it on this. This makes the ticket look more professional,
valid and formal as opposed to using other text that makes it look like an
informal piece of paper.
I also feel like the black and white themes on the texts in the main upper body of
the ticket works too, I would have liked an image to support the theme of images
of the northern quarter that was on my poster and menu. But I also feel that by
using colours that fit with the colour scheme of the festival works too. By having
cassettes this effect is also not lost, by having them there this Indie vibe that the
festival is giving off is relayed on this ticket. Cassettes are sometimes being
released by up and coming bands as other forms of listening to music are now
coming back into fashion. Vinyl records are more of a Pre 70’s vibe and are more
relatable to the times before that, where as cassettes are more relatable with the
80’s and 90’s, which matches that indie vibe, and with Manchester aswell.
Manchester during that era was the music capital of the world. With the
Madchester scene and world known bands also came from Manchester at that
time and that means that the cassette tape connotations work well.
What I would Change
Photo in the background to match the urban theme that I was going with, I feel
that the connotations work here, but I would feel that if I used another image of
Manchester itself that it would have worked out better in the overall theme of
the house style of the other graphics that I made.
