breastfeeding. I tried to exhaust the results on this topic by changing three kinds of phrasings (breast

relate to intelligence and because of the numerous amount of studies in this field, I specified it by
choosing the following interested scopes cognitive ability, cognitive development, intelligence
quotient, intelligence, and IQ. I also searched for cognitive measurement as a performance of
intelligence, using Cognit* to widen the results. I added up the articles on intelligence and cognition
by the OR Boolean operator and got 430,710 results. Next, I applied the AND Boolean operator to
combine breastfeeding with intelligence and gained 262 pieces of studies. With the aim of exploring
more about the confounding effect on past literature, I searched confound in three ways, namely
confound, confounded or confounded. The previous 262 outcomes which were intersected with

Voltaire, one the Enlightenment s greatest leaders was well known for his use of satire to expose and
criticize vices of the 18th century. Through his writing, Voltaire successfully uses irony and parody as
a means to satirize what he believes is wrong with 18th century life. In his novel Candide, Voltaire
focuses on many topics, specifically the pitfalls and dangers of optimism, the hypocrisy of the
Catholic Church, and political injustice. Although humorous, the irony and parody that exists in the

have theorized about moral actions for eons, one such philosopher is John Stuart Mill. In his book
Utilitarianism he tries to improve on the theories of utilitarianism from previous philosophers, as he is
a strong believer himself in the theory. In Mill s book he presents the ideology that there is another
branch on the utilitarian tree. This branch being called rule utilitarianism. Mill makes a distinction

In the instance when an individual steals from another individual for his/her own self happiness,
others in society cannot deem this to be justifiable, even if it may be more beneficial to the thief to
steal. Act utilitarianism does not guarantee the protection to the victim of theft in this example
because, it s more focused on the greatest happiness and not on the consequences for others happiness.
The greatest happiness may be given to either person in this situation depending on the stories of each

Why Themes in Popular Culture are Important to Study
The study of popular culture is useful in many ways. To be more specific, this course has reached its
three intended main ideas: what it means to be American, how to be more consumption conscious, and
how to apply these studies in our own lives. Jim Cullen puts this in a less specific sense, arguing that
the study of popular culture can afford valuable clues about collective fears, hopes, and debates
(Cullen, The Art of Democracy, 2). We use these clues to understand the world around us, as well as
why we do what we do as Americans and as humans. I will be touching on themes that relate to this
quotation by Cullen, escapism, exploitation, and globalization, as well as how these themes relate to
the course goals.
For most of the twentieth century, [popular culture] has been denigrated by intellectuals of all
ideological stripes as either meaningless escapism or a dangerous narcotic (Cullen 2). Popular culture
is a form of escapism; however, I would argue against those intellectuals calling it meaningless,
because, as we have also learned from Cullen, the elites will reject new forms of popular culture.
Returning to escapism, an example we have seen is in comic books. Adolescent boys would turn to
