Portuguese, Spanish, And Spanish Colonization Of America
There are many differences in the way that the Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English colonized
their land. Their land was either colonized for trade, profit, and religious freedom. The colonization of
their land came with diligent work due to the fact that when colonizing most did not succeed on their
first try. There are struggles with opposing colonies trying to fight over land that both places want for
themselves. The best part about this is the land they receive can be used for valued goods.
The Spanish colonization all began with Columbus in 1492 and advancing for nearly 350 years. Spain
conquered and settled most of South America and the Caribbean. Accordingly, it all started when
Columbus had been searching for a new route to the Indies. Columbus was sure that he had found it,
so he continued his voyages. Settlements by the Spanish that were found earlier were on the islands of
the Caribbean. On Columbus s fourth and final voyage in he found a large canoe off the coast of what
is now Honduras filled with trade goods. He boarded the canoe and rifled through the cargo which
included cacao beans, copper, flint axes, copper bells, pottery, and colorful cotton garments. He took
one prisoner and what he wanted from the cargo and let the canoe continue. This was the first contact
that the Spanish had with the civilizations of Central America, and this would further influence the
Spanish. Another thing that erupted was The Treaty of Tordesillas, which was an attempt

The Importance Of Art Funding For Education Essay
The Importance of Art Funding
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, art is defined as something that is created with
imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings ( Art ). With
that being said, it is almost essential that art is maintained as a general course required for every
student to take. While having art classes in schools available for students is important, it is also
equally as important for the school funding for the art programs to be regulated throughout each
district. By using a simple student to teacher ratio to determine how much money should be allotted to
each teacher, this reoccurring problem could be solved for good.
One of the main problems in the art program throughout the United States is the regulation of funding
within the program. For example, while one teacher has one hundred students and another may have
seventy, the teacher with seventy students gets a budget of five hundred dollars when the teacher with
one hundred gets only three hundred and fifty. On top of that, not only is it unfair to the individual
teachers, but it is also happening all over the United States to teachers in the same district. In an article
about secondary art programs, it states that the art teacher at School Number Two was operating with
78% of the funds as the teacher at School Number One. Because the two schools are within the same
district, this is a difference that seemingly defies explanation (Kraft 55). While

Asbestos Industry Research Paper
For many years the asbestos industry manufacturers, suppliers, product developers, insurance
companies, etc claimed that they had no knowledge that asbestos could endanger the health and well
being of asbestos workers. Rather than protecting their employees and seeing a lower bottom line
these firms instead chose to hide the facts and deny any allegations that asbestos was causing their
employees to get sick and die. However, the dangers related to the inhalation of asbestos fibers had
been known for close to two thousand years. In ancient Rome, Pilny the Elder observed that slaves
who were forced to work in the quarries exhibited a high degree of lung sickness. In 1918 a report
published by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that people who worked in the
asbestos industry were dying at an unusually young age. By the mid 1920s the U.S. asbestos industry

The insurance company observed that typically exposure to asbestos leads to disability and death.
Nonetheless, until the early 1970s the industry chose to hide the dangers related to asbestos. Initially,
one of the methods they used was to settle worker s compensation claims instead of fighting battles in
the courts. However, within a short amount of time they instead chose to not admit to any wrong doing
at all and neither would they admit to any liability. In the early 1970s various agencies in the
government started to direct the public s attention to the dangers associated with the use of asbestos.
Although they set up guidelines for its use the United States government chose not to ban its use. The
U.S. is actually one of the few industrialized countries in the world that has not outlawed the use of
asbestos. However, companies were warned that they better start protecting their employees by issuing

In this is paper I m going to tell you about the religious freedom we have in America and how it s
uniquely American. There are many reason we have religious freedom in America, One being that it s
a law. I m going to tell who wrote the bill of rights that made religious freedom a law and why they
wrote it. I ll tell you about the people who fight in war just to make sure we have this freedom among
other freedoms. I ll talk about how America is one place where we have a choose an say in our
religion. I m going to tell about the religions you can choose to be for example Christian.
What is religious freedom to you? To me religious freedom is a choose of religion. The law states that
religious freedom is the right to choose a religion (or no religion) without interference by the
government. Freedom of religion is guaranteed by the First Amendment. You might be wondering

The Biodiversity Of Fiji And Coral Reefs
Fiji is an Island Nation in the South Pacific Ocean at one corner of the Coral Triangle, which is home
to the most marine biodiversity on Earth. Fiji s spectacular coral reefs are world renowned for their
vibrant colors. While many other coral reef sites globally have degraded, the reefs of Fiji seem to
remain vibrant and diverse, making them a high priority for marine conservation in the Pacific Ocean.
Fiji is home to many wetland ecosystems on the mainland that flows into the coastal mangrove
wetlands and coral reefs. The land and sea ecosystems relationship are dependent on all the inhabitants
of the Fiji Islands conservation efforts. Some recent research contends that community and
government partnerships have the potential to support a healthy, sustainable environment, while
reaping the benefits of protecting biodiversity of species in the Fiji wetlands with noted evidence in
Fiji s coral reefs. The biodiversity of Fiji s Mangroves and coral reefs are greatly affected by the
decisions that Fijians decide. The importance of the already highly valued mangrove wetland function
invariably protects Fiji coral reefs health stimulates ongoing research. This research maintains that
community and government partnerships have the potential to support a healthy, sustainable
environment, while reaping the benefits of protecting biodiversity of species in the Fiji wetlands. The

Analysis Of The Air Commerce Act Of 1926 (ACA)
From the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, safety was one of the primary concerns of the public.
Within 11 years, aircraft as a form passenger travel was expanding rapidly. As a result, the skies
quickly became crowded and accidents were occurring both in the air and on the ground. Fearing that
air transit would not reach its full economic potential, the Air Commerce Act of 1926 (ACA) was
enacted (Dilger, 2003). The ACA established uniform safety rules for carriers, required pilot licensing,
and standardized routes. As a result, deaths from aircraft accidents reduced from one in every 1.4
million miles flown in 1927 to every 13 million miles (Dilger, 2003). The ACA paved the way for the
Federal Aviation Administration in 1956.

Socrates Vs Emerson
In their work of explaining and utilizing self reliance, Socrates and Emerson similarly reference this
idea and how standing up for one s own beliefs will impact others. Socrates charges brought upon him
by accusers such as Meletus and Anytus are punishable by death. Though he may lose his life, he
refuses to surrender his original ideas and defends philosophy without changing his views even with
the impending death sentence. In the same way, Emerson s theme of self reliance dictates that
everyone should use it to combat conformity. I ve always been taught that believing in yourself is key.
Although many people allege that they rely on themselves, I claim that Socrates and Emerson s beliefs
about self reliance are significant because believing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Emerson, people need to Insist on yourself; never imitate (Emerson 18). Anyone familiar
with the saying be yourself can appreciate this idea. He further explains his method of self reliance
and how it will be beneficial in the long run. People should be self reliant and pursue their ideas.
Emerson is correct in implying that no one should ever back down or succumb to imitation which
could lead to more mindless thinking. Relying solely on yourself can present better opportunities than
carelessly repeated nonsense. This is one of the reasons that teachers say not to cheat on tests. They
explain that there is no use in trying to copy off of your partner s work because they could be wrong,
but people still do it. Therefore, these cheaters will never learn to think or figure things out on their
own. In life, the most successful people are the ones who are resilient and self sufficient instead of
selfish and easily discouraged. Socrates also brought up imitation when he talked of young people
imitating him, but they did not understand him. In the same way, Emerson s theme of self reliance is

Battle Of Ap Bac Essay
The Battle of Ap Bac The battle of Ap Bac was a small battle engaged between the Army of the
Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the insurgents, or the People Liberation Armed Forces (Viet Cong
AKA VC) with the assistance of American s weapons and advice during the Vietnam War. It took
place on 2 January, 1963, near a small village named Ap Bac which is located approximately 65 km
southwest of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. (Starry, 2002). As a senior leader, it is important that we
have to be technically and tactically proficient. In order to be proficient, we not only need to be
trained, but also we have to know how to gain experience from past battles in history using battle
assessment, and critical thinking process to study the battle. That way, we know what needs to be
improved, how to sustain it, and how would we execute it better next time. Therefore, studying the
history of the battle of Ap Bac will enhance the knowledge of how the commanders used the most
effective and efficient method for applying decisive action on the battle field. It would be a successful
outcome for the South Vietnamese ARVN, and Kennedy s administration would have gained more
trust from American people for the presence of American troops in Vietnam, if the American advisers
and the ARVN s commanders would have integrated intelligence preparation of the battlefield (ITP)
throughout the operations process to identify the gaps of intelligence between human intelligence

Malaria In Sub-Saharan Africa
Malaria is one of the most significant infectious disease burdens worldwide. The disease especially
targets the most vulnerable groups, namely infants and children, and accounts for approximately 20%
of childhood deaths in Africa. Many people living in countries where malaria is endemic are unable to
afford, or do not have access to, medications needed for treatment, which contributes to high
morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, malaria has a devastating economic impact, with gross
domestic products decreasing up to 1.3% in highly affected countries. The World Health Organization
concluded through their research that malaria is the fifth biggest killer in sub Saharan Africa.

Type Of Agonist Essay
Types of agonists
Receptors can be activated by either endogenous (such as hormones and neurotransmitters) or
exogenous (such as drugs) agonists, resulting in a biological response. A physiological agonist is a
substance that creates the same bodily responses but does not bind to the same receptor.
An endogenous agonist for a particular receptor is a compound naturally produced by the body that
binds to and activates that receptor. For example, the endogenous agonist for serotonin receptors is
serotonin, and the endogenous agonist for dopamine receptors is dopamine.[1]
A superagonist is a compound that is capable of producing a greater maximal response than the
endogenous agonist for the target receptor, and thus has an efficacy of more than 100%. This does not
necessarily mean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Inverse agonists exert the opposite pharmacological effect of a receptor agonist, not merely an absence
of the agonist effect as seen with antagonist. An example is the cannabinoid inverse agonist
rimonabant.
A co agonist works with other co agonists to produce the desired effect together. NMDA receptor
activation requires the binding of both glutamate, glycine and D serine co agonists.
An irreversible agonist is a type of agonist that binds permanently to a receptor through the formation
of covalent bonds. A few of these have been described.[2][3]
A selective agonist is selective for a specific type of receptor. E.g. buspirone is a selective agonist for
serotonin 5 HT1A.
New findings that broaden the conventional definition of pharmacology demonstrate that ligands can
concurrently behave as agonist and antagonists at the same receptor, depending on effector pathways
or tissue type. Terms that describe this phenomenon are functional selectivity , protean agonism ,[4][5]
or selective receptor modulators.[6]

Ancient Greece Forms Of Government
There were many forms of government in Ancient Greece. The ones that will be discussed in the
following paragraphs are monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy. First, the
definition of a monarchy is a state or nation in which the supreme power is actually or nominally
lodged in a monarch (Dictionary.com, 2017). Ancient Greek city states that had a monarchy were
Sparta (partially), as well as Macedonia and Epeiros. Monarchies were not found often in Ancient
Greece (Cartwright and Cartwright, 2017). The form of governance most like a monarchy are
tyrannies, since the center of power is on one person. The form of governance most unlike a monarchy
are democracies, since the center of power rests with the largest group, the people themselves. Second,
the definition of an aristocracy is a government or state ruled by an aristocracy, elite, or privileged
upper class (Dictionary.com, 2017). Ancient Greek city states that had an aristocracy included Athens,
as well as Sparta. Both city states had a period of their history ruled by an elite class (Brand, n.d.). The
form of governance most like aristocracy are oligarchies, since the definition of the two is almost
identical. The form of governance most unlike aristocracy are probably the democracies, because there
are more people involved in democracies, and they don t include as much of a concentration of power
or a concentration of wealth. Third, the definition of a tyranny is the government or rule of a

Protostar Nuclear Fusion
Just like humans, everything in the universe has a purpose. From the beginning of the moment
anything is created into existence it grows and fulfills its purpose. Stars are no different. Every day,
stars are created by gravity which pulls the star together, the star builds up heat and pressure, and then
fusion begins. The process in which a star goes through is known as a star s life cycle. All stars start at
the basic nebula phase, change to a protostar, and go on to the main sequence star phase. After the
main sequence star phase, there are two different divisions that are determined by the mass of the star.

Peterloo Revolution
Discussion
Why did Parliament pass a law forbidding the breaking of factory machines?
During the Industrial Revolution, the factory machines decreased the number of workers needed to
perform certain tasks. The extraneous workers were fired, which angered the newly unemployed
factory workers. These workers then rioted in several countries, smashing the machinery that they
blamed for their unemployment. The violence from this frightened Parliament into passing the law
forbidding the destruction of factory machines.
What caused the Peterloo massacre?
During the Industrial Revolution, labor unions were illegal in England. However, the times were hard
enough that factory workers decided to join together and fight for better working conditions anyway.

William Blake s writing contained aspects of romanticism. Describe William Blake s beliefs and how
they affected his writing?
William Blake was one of several transitionary writers between the Age of Reason and the Age of
Romanticism. He saw the poverty and suffering that surrounded him and was a supporter of the
French Revolution in its early days. He could not accept the neoclassical idea of a stable, orderly
hierarchy in the universe, but instead viewed existence as a blending of opposite poles good and evil,
innocence and experience, heaven and hell. His magnum opus Songs of Innocence and Songs of
Experience is the epitome of how his work embodied his beliefs.

Human Interference Of The Atmosphere
Greenhouse effect is the process where heat is trapped by greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere
to keep the Earth warm. The planet s atmosphere contains these radiatively active gases, that radiate
energy in all direction. Greenhouse gases are already present in the atmosphere; without them the
Earth would be significantly cold enough to freeze the oceans. To understand how important and
harmful the greenhouse gases can be for the planet, we need to answer these questions. Do extra
greenhouse gases upset the Earth s natural balance and make it even warmer? Is there any extra
insertion of the gases in the atmosphere by humans? If so, how significant are the effects? This essay
will discuss in detail, the mechanism that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How is radiative equilibrium achieved? The global surface temperature averaged over daily and
seasonal series, remains constant. Earth surface receives 340 watts/m2 of radiant energy, if the global
surface temperature averaged daily remains constant, therefore Earth s surface must be radiating out
energy precisely 340 watts/m2 into space to keep the surface cool.
There are many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the two most abundant are water vapour and
carbon dioxide. Visible light (short wave radiation) passes through the green house gases to reach the
Earth s surface, The Earth surface absorbs short wave radiation, the radiation is then released by the
surface in the form of infrared radiation. Only 10% of the infrared radiation released passes through
the gases and the atmosphere and escapes. The rest of the infrared radiation is trapped by the
greenhouse gases and clouds.
What really causes the greenhouse effect? The remaining infrared radiation is trapped by the green
house gases. The greenhouse gases in turn reradiates the infrared radiation in all direction. Some of the
radiation go into the outer space and some go back to the Earth surface. The continuous cycle of
exchange of infrared radiation between the Earth s surface and the greenhouse gases is called the
greenhouse effect.
The presence of an atmosphere containing greenhouse gases keeps the Earth surface warm, without an
atmosphere like

Klinefelter s Syndrome
Klinefelter s Syndrome is a genetic disorder that only affects men. Those affected are born with an
extra X chromosome (Belts Frey, 2006). In 1942, Dr. Harry Klinefelter released a study concerning
nine men who had little to no facial hair, enlarged breasts, small testicles, and were unable to produce
sperm. The name of this syndrome originated from Dr. Klinefelter s name (Kenny Henderson, 2015).
This disease is often abbreviated as KS or referred to as 47 XXY. It is referred to as 47 XXY because
of the extra chromosome in patients (Schoenstadt, 2016).

Negative Effects Of Mobile Phones
The huge impact of technology is seen most in this era that we live in. A form of technology that has
influenced every gesture, words, and action is the mobile phone. The 21st century is the era of
cellphones, with this form of technology communication with friends and families has never been
easier with the addition of social media, but for every advantage there is always a disadvantage.
Among those disadvantages of mobile phones are stress, anxiety, and motor accidents. To illustrate the
effect of Mobile Phones, what is technology? Technology is the appliance of scientific information for
functional utilization. We use technology to complete tasks in our daily lives. Humans have used
technology to extend their abilities and knowledge. In this technology based era, technology is
included in everything we do, it is used at work, education settings, communication, and
transportation. If technology is wrongly applied, it can cause more harm than good. Mobile
technology has made humans overtly dependent on its abilities, at the rate individuals are on their
smartphones, many of our math and reading capabilities will decrease drastically. Firstly, is Stress an
effect of mobile technology on a person. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from
various challenging situations. The development of mobile phones consequently created social media
applications, such as Facebook, Instagram, and snapchat. In this age, the constant checking of number
of likes or hearts, the compulsion to check if someone unlike a post is the norm. As a result, it causes
angst and worry, subsequently causing an individual to question each post made on their feed; Was the
post offensive? Were the pictures or videos unflattering? Even to upload pictures, or just say
something of yours, one begins to seek approval from strangers one will never see nor speak to in the
nearest future. These are just the basic examples of the power of stress from the use of social media on
mobile devices. Furthermore, having a mobile phone often tempts individuals to spend all day
cemented to their devices, texting and talking; even if the individual is not actually texting nor calling
anyone but just scrolling through old text messages, at the

The Queer Reading Of Nick Gatsby
As insane as this sounds, I ve done the research. It s plausible. The idea isn t original; it was first
proposed by Carlyle Thompson, a professor of African American and American literature at Medgar
Evers College of the City University of New York. There s actually quite a bit of evidence to support
it, just as there is to support the queer reading of Nick.
Gatsby is described by Nick, his tanned skin and short hair look as though it were trimmed every day
(Fitzgerald 50). The short hair and the appearance of daily trimmings could definitely refer to the
grooming habits of African American men.
Gatsby s West Egg mansion is on more than 40 acres of lawn and garden (Fitzgerald 5), which is
specifically interesting, because freed slaves were to be given 40 acres and a mule by decree of
Sherman s Special Field Orders, No. 15. More than is stated, but instead of giving us that exact
number it could be 41 acres or 400 but we re given 40. It should be noted that 40 acres and a mule was
oft promised, but a promise not always kept and inconsistently applied (Oubre 79). There s an obvious
metaphor for a man who feels deserving of something he doesn t get, i.e., Daisy.
Gatsby would be unlikely to achieve the level of success he did in the roaring 20s if he were black,
and some of the upper crust white folk would be likely to notice or take issue with his race, so it s only
a plausible theory if he were able to pass himself off as white. There is evidence for this,

Transitional Objects In Children
Transitional objects are among the most powerful symbols in children s lives (Kutner,1991).
Attachment to a transitional object tends to develop around six months of age. This is when the first
evidence of independence develop, but the attachment peaks at about eighteen to thirty months of age.
The security objects are generally most important when the child is about two and a half years old.
Because between the ages of two and three children develop the necessary skills that allow them to
emotionally relate to people other than the people most important to them (Weiser,1991). Transitional
objects are irresistible to children because, for the most part, they are soft, warm, and totally
predictable (Miles, 1997). Miles states that in addition

Traditional Solar Cells Advantage And Applications
Traditional solar cells advantage and applications Solar cells technology, as a clean power source of
new generation, has been great developed in the past 35 years. The market needed for this for the solar
cells technology is also greatly increased while module cost is decreased.
However, around 80 percent of all the solar panels sold around the world is traditional solar cells,
because of their efficiency for residential use. The applications for traditional solar cells are still
dominant in the area. And here are some main types of traditional solar cells and their applications.
Monocrystalline silicon cells Mono crystalline silicon cell technology is the oldest solar cell
technology, but it s still the most popular and efficient solar cell technology nowadays. The
monocrystalline silicon module is made from a single silicon crystal; it is usually complex and huge.
And its color is usually blue or black. As the earliest solar cell technology, it has a lot of advantages
that s make it still popular in the area. One of the most important one is its longevity, some websites
indicate that the single crystalline solar panels can last up to 50 years, until 2015, some panels are still
doing their duties after 40 years. Even though the panel will suffer an efficiency drop as time goes by,
it is still a very reliable in the long run. Its efficiency is another big advantage; single crystalline cells

Theme Of Supernatural Elements In The Fall Of The House Of...
Supernatural elements is something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. These elements,
such as religious figures and activities, ghosts, witches and anthropomorphized animals have been
used to develop themes throughout literature. These supernatural elements are often used to outline the
conflict within the plot and creates an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout the text, which
establishes the gothic. Supernatural components leave us to question what is real and what is our
imagination.
In the text The Fall of the House of Usher there are supernatural events throughout the short story.
From the rapidly decaying house that is quite literally connected to the main character Roderick
Usher, to the ghost of Roderick s twin sister Madeline. House of Usher an appellation which seemed
to include, in the minds of the peasantry who used it, both the family and the family mansion. This
line gives us a hint from the title toward the supernatural link between the physical house collapsing
and the metaphorical fall of the Usher Family. I believe Edgar Poe did this to evoke an uncanny
feeling in the reader and to add to the sublime of the short story. This link between living and
inanimate gives the story an extra gothic element. There was blood upon her white robes, and the
evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she
remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold then, with a low moaning cry, fell
heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore
him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. The supernatural element of
Madeline coming back from the dead or being a ghost creates conflict within the plot and therefore
leads to the inevitable fall of the Usher Family. I believe this ghostly figure struck fear into the reader
creating a suspenseful follow up, allowing the imagination to take off and picture this supernatural
occurrence. This was never an explained supernatural event. It was left up to the reader s imagination
and their assumption as to what is real and what is a figment of the characters imagination. There was

Positive and Negative Impacts of the Sixties Counterculture

Hippies represent the ideological, naive nature that children possess. They feel that with a little love
and conectedness, peace and equality will abound. It is with this assumption that so many activists and
reformers, inspired by the transformation that hippies cultivated, have found the will to persist in
revolutionizing social and political policy. Their alternative lifestyles and radical beleifs were the
shocking blow that American culture segregation, McCarthyism, unjust wars, censorship needed to
prove that some Americans still had the common sense to care for one another. The young people of

Political Awareness and Student Rebellion
Recently Ralph Nader spoke to an enthusiastic and supportive audience at Columbia College. Nader
spoke about the very same issues he lectured about in 1968 corporate rule, environmental protections,
military industrial complex and unjust wars, equality and access to education, women s rights. It was
an increased awareness that overtook the young people of the sixties counterculture movement. This
awareness led to a social outcry against injustices in politics.
The hippies, hand in hand with college students, helped stop an unjust, costly, and deathly war in
Vietnam. The hippies had the courage to speak out for the 67% of Americans that were opposed to the

Anxiety In Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight
Reflective statement. During our discussion, many aspects of Agilulf s personality were brought up.
This caused me to think more deeply on his character. The things I realized made me compare him to
myself and I drew several comparisons between his behavior and my generalized anxiety. He seemed
to have a more defined anxiety though, which I soon concluded was most likely social anxiety due to
his problems communicating. Title: Depression and anxiety in Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight
In Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight the main character, Agilulf, is a disembodied knight in
Charlemagne s army who is often at odds with his fellow knights due to his perfectionism. At the
beginning of the book he appears to be cold and businesslike, admonishing his fellow knights ... Show

His dificulties seem to stem from his self conciousness about his lack of a corporeal body, which
many knights often bring up in attempts to discredit him and when joking about him. Selfconciousnes
often coincides with social anxiety, either being the cause of the anxiety or the result. He also seems to
be more confident in himself before Charlemagne cuts him off for his name being too long winded
and tells him that he will never remember it. This could be the incident that set off Agilulf s anxiety
and depression, along with his unwillingness to start conversations. Often times sufferers of social
anxiety have a defining moment in their childhoods or adolescence which shuts them off from the
world, making them distrusting of others and unable to confidently speak with others, although this is
not always the case. While this may not be the cause of Agilulf s inability to communicate, it could

The Importance Of Referent Power In Music
The power to influence people to do something depends on the knowledge I have concerning the thing
and this type of power is called expert power (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2015). For example, as the
choir director of my church back in Ghana, I have a lot of influence on the choir members as
individuals and the choir as a whole because of my knowledge and experience in music. The
knowledge and experience I have in music wields me more power even over anyone I meet for the
first time doing music. As a result, I influence the songs we sing at church, the commitment level of
the members and decision making processes towards the choir s development.
Referent power is the power that people have over followers because of the relationship between them
(Hughes, et al, 2015). I have a low level in referent power at the beginning of my relationship with
people around me and even at work because of my personality. I am an introvert and it takes a long
time for me to get attached to people around me. For example, when I was working with one of the
universities back in Ghana as the administrative assistant to the liaison officer of the university, it took
about three months for me to get closer to the secretary.
Based on the theory of referent power, the secretary has traits of a referent power. This is because of
the strong relationship that developed between us after I got acquainted to her. Through that, she
influenced my attitude towards handling student complaints about

Why Is Circumcision Wrong
Circumcision is a barbaric practice that has no medical purposes besides for appearance and what is
more attractive to the opposite gender. Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin, it is a practice that
got started because of religion. Circumcision is usually performed on the second day after the baby is
born. During a circumcision, the foreskin is freed from the head of the penis, and the extra foreskin is
removed. The foreskin is a normal part of a male child, it is not a birth defect or something that has to
be removed for the safety of the child. Circumcision is painful to the baby boy, they do not give them
medicine to numb the pain or put them to sleep. The baby is in so much pain from the removal of the

All of these would be reasons to remove the foreskin.
A male child cannot speak up and say he does not want this done, many people just do this to their
children without thinking of what they may want in the future. Many parents have decided to wait till

Summary Of Coach Lombatte Speech
I will be analyzing a speech given by coach Vincent T. Lombardi. Coach Lombardi is widely

impression that still impacts.

The main way that Lombardi created such an influential speech was through his style and invention of
arguments. Coach Lombardi used a style in his speech that made everything very clear to the
audience. His speech was very casual and used language that, although powerful and moving, was
easily understood by anyone who listened to the speech. This allowed his speech to connect with a
much wider audience than football players, fans, or reporters. Still, today, this speech is easily
understood but conveys the powerful message that anything is possible through hard work. It is so
well known, that it is used on motivational posters today. Furthermore, apart from the simplistic,
powerful style, Lombardi uses a type of invention for his arguments that makes his perspective very
clear to see. For example, he argues that a football player must play in his entirety in order to be
successful. He begins this argument by saying, he s got to play from the ground up from the soles of
his feet right up to his head. He then emphasizes this point another time by saying that every inch of
him has to play. He then introduces the counter perspective that Some guys play with their heads. He
says that this is good because you need to be smart to be the best. However, he says that the most
important thing is that you play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. This

Achieving success, whether it is in a personal, social, or professional setting, is often the end goal of
most human efforts. Most of the time, acquiring that success requires hard work, perseverance, and
dedication. Yet it is often difficult to maintain the continual motivation needed to overcome the
frequent obstacles and setbacks that litter the road to success. C.P Neck s and C. Manz s book,
Mastering Self Leadership: Empowering Yourself for Personal Excellence, explores strategies and
tools to strengthen the key attribute that provides sustenance for an individual s motivation, self

As the author s shifted focus to psychologically driven concepts, such as mental and thought patterns,
the strategies shifted from creating a positive environment to overcoming obstacles. One of the first
steps in overcoming an obstacle was to visualize the achievement, to create an imagined experience .
Envisioning success bolsters a person s morale and provides a renewed vigor with which to attack the
obstacle.
Although the text focused on self leadership, the authors did discuss how self leadership is directly
tied into the success of teams. The same strategies, which improve self leadership in oneself, can be
extrapolated for a team: removal of negative cues, goal setting, strong team beliefs and team mental
imagery are a few examples. However, in order to ensure the success of the team, there must be a
balance of me and we , meaning that while individualistic goals must be set and followed, they must
coincide with team goals and neither should outweigh the other. The importance of fitness to self
image and self leadership was the penultimate strategy discussed in the text. Studies illustrated the
benefits of fitness resulting in improved job performance and professional satisfaction. Lastly, the text
discussed the importance of life factors such as happiness, emotional satisfaction, and social
responsibility to self leadership. Different personality types approach

Apollo 13 Movie Physics Essay
Apollo 13 Essay Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly in space or work on the crew at
NASA that helps the astronauts get home safely? These two jobs both use many of the laws of
physics. In fact, almost everything they do involves physics. Apollo 13 is a movie that epitomizes
what those jobs are like and how much physics is required. The three main laws of physics in the
movie were Newton s Law of Universal Gravitation, Newton s First Law, and Newton s Third Law.
One main law in Apollo 13 was Newton s Law of Universal Gravitation, defined as F=Gm1m2r2,
where G=6.67×10 11. The first main scene in which this law was needed was when NASA decided

Another prevalent physics law in Apollo 13 was Newton s First Law, which states that a body will
persist in its state of rest or of uniform motion unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force.
In most scenes of Apollo 13 that show the spacecraft in space this law was visually demonstrated. The
Apollo 13 spacecraft was always in uniform motion unless it was acted on by another external
unbalanced force. The most significant force in space that would act on the spacecraft was that of
gravity. Gravity from other large masses, such as the Earth, Moon, and Sun, acted as the external
unbalanced force which changed the spacecraft s speed and direction. If all the gravity in space were
to suddenly disappear and the net force on the spacecraft were to be zero then the Apollo 13 ship
would simply adhere to its uniform motion tangent to its original path. Another group of scenes in
which Newton s First was displayed was when the astronauts moved around in their spacecraft while
in space. It is quite easy to tell from watching how the astronauts moved around in 0g that they were
exhibiting Newton s First Law. If an astronaut in the movie applied a force in one direction to move in
the other that astronaut would then move at a constant velocity (in relation to the ship) as soon as that
force was removed. On the contrary, if no force were applied,

Property Law Servitudes
Dear Madam,

The servitude pertinent to this matter is a praedial servitude, relating to two pieces of land, adjacent to
each other. A paedial servitude is established over the servient property (The Trust) for the benefit of
the dominant property (UCT) in perpetuity. A right of way typically confers a real right to benefit from
the property of another. It affords powers of use and enjoyment to someone other than the owner.
Section 63(1) of the Deeds Registry Act tells us that limited real rights are capable of registration. This
particular right of way, in favour of UCT, is therefore enforceable against the Trust as it appears to

The relationship between the dominant and servient owners is governed by the principle of
reasonableness. Where there is a conflict of interests, the interests of the dominant owner will have
precedence over those of the servient owner, subject to the principle of reasonableness. The Holder of
the servitude must exercise the servitude civiliter modo, that is, in a civilized and considerate way.
This does not mean that the dominant owner is restricted in exercising the servitudal rights merely
because to do so would detrimentally affect the servient owner. It follows however that the holder of
the servitude may not increase the burden on the servient property beyond the express or implied
terms of the servitude.
One must therefore examine the rights and obligations that arise from the servitude, as governed by
the aforementioned principle of reasonableness, paying attention to the factors responsible for the
footpath s state of disrepair. In the light of this second contributory factor, should the Trust approach a
court for a declaration of rights, arguing that UCT has failed abide by the principle of civiliter modo,
such a court has the power to enforce specific duties by way of an interdict.

Those aged above 65 have enlarged from 26.5 million in 2006 to 29.47 million in 2011 (Yoshiko,
2015). By the end of this decade, for each child under 15 years old, he has to support three pensioners
(Patrick, 2010). The birth rate of Japan drops a lot since the 21st century, so the children and working
aged cohorts experience a sharp decrease, and the elder experience a sharp increase. Ministry of
Health, Labor and Welfare (2011) believes that after a few years, the first group of the baby boomers
will reach their retirement age, which will cause a great increase in the debt, deficits, and deflation of

to as the kitchen in his culture. It was impossible to get rid of the kitchen, it was permanent, only
possible ways of fixing costed much to afford. The way Gate s mother was able to tame the kitchen
was by using a hot comb ; a pair of prongs, heated on top of the stove. Gates despised the kitchen

Neuromuscular Dentist Research Paper
Finding a Neuromuscular Dentist
Neuromuscular dentists are not only concerned with the health of the teeth and gums, but with entire
system that allows us to chew, swallow and speak. The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is the
system of joints and muscles that allows us to open and close our mouths. Misalignment of this system
can lead to many painful symptoms.
Our practice focuses on finding the most harmonious position for the TMJ and the surrounding
tissues. Proper occlusion, or a good bite , is achieved by finding the optimal resting position of the
jaw. This will allow the rest of the body to align properly, and will help relieve painful symptoms.
While we most often look for a neuromuscular dentist when we experience pain, in fact

Evil And Evil In East Of Eden By John Steinbeck
Everyone possess those evil and selfish actions, the biggest are maybe closing the mouth, ears, and
eyes to what is going around, and instead stay self preserved. Is the world an image of how sinful one
can be? Or does it lay within your actions. In the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Cal pursues to
understand and live his life with his loved brother Aaron, dad Adam, missing whore mom Kate, and
his trustful servant Lee. He lives in a life where his actions are defined from his ancestors, and allows
his descents to drown out his uniqueness. Lee s pure perspective of humanity along with his parental
care, and companionship with Cal allow him to educate Cal about the choice between good and evil.
The decision of every human being not only shows the evil or good of a person or the world, but will
determine the flourish or destruction of the world and humanity. Lee s ability to view humanity as an
outsider, and be a moral and spiritual figure for Cal and humanity. After meeting Samuel for the first
time, the two discuss their ethnic background as well as their belonging to the white as Lee answered
that to the so called whites [he] was still a Chinese, but an untrustworthy one; and at the same time
[his] Chinese friends steered clear of [him]. [he]] had to give it up (Steinbeck 164). Throughout the
story Lee is the symbolic figure of God. His inability to be viewed as part of any of his ethnic
communities demonstrates how he has seen humanity with an open eye, and

Medical Cannabis Essay
What sets medical cannabis apart from other medicines is its complex
attributes. Medical cannabis is composed of several cannabinoids that are naturally
occurring compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant (Mandal, 2010). Meaning
that regardless of the disease or the affliction that it might cause to unhealthy
patients, there is at least one cannabinoid that is likely to treat the patient with the
cannabis. One of the most widely known cannabinoids found in marijuana is the
Tetrahydrocannabinol. Tetrahydrocannabinol, which is also known as THC, can be
defined as a mild analgesic and cellular research has shown the compound has
antioxidant activity (Why tested cannabis,). In turn, THC targets the CB1
receptor, a cannabinoid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another disease that recognizes medical cannabis as a treatment would be
the Human Immunodeficiency Virus better known as HIV. HIV is a disease that
compromises a person s immune system by killing protective white blood cells
(Cannabis and HIV). The main factor in HIV victims has to do with the fact that
their condition makes them vulnerable to infections. In some cases a common cold
could essentially result in the death of an HIV victim because their body cannot
fight off the cold. The chief regimen for HIV is high active antiretroviral therapy
(HAART), it consists of different medications that decreases the diseases
development. Daniel K Jane suffered from AIDS, he explained the use of HAART
caused severe nausea, chronic exhaustion and physical weakness, neurological
complications, persistent anxiety, and a total loss of appetite (Cannabis and HIV).
Unfortunately the detrimental side effects of HAART can be so crippling that
patients will discontinue their treatment. For this reason, those patients including
medical cannabis apart of there regimen are: 3.3 times more likely to

Campaign To Keep Guns Off Campus Analysis
Today thousands of young students go to colleges and universities here in America. With so many
young minds placed onto one campus with little to no parental supervision the question is asked: are
college campuses a safe place? Yes, most college campuses across America are safe. A study prepared
by the campaign to keep guns off campus shows that the crime rate for college is monumentally lower
than the rate for the city where the campus is located. For example, in 2013 the city of Jacksonville
Florida had 452 cases of forcible rape and 3,277 accounts of aggravated assaults. A staggering amount
compared to 1 forcible rape and 6 counts of aggravated assaults at the University of North Florida in
Jacksonville. But what keeps students safe on

Bilbo Baggins Opinion
In this essay I will be discussing my personal opinion on The Hobbit. The story unfolds about a timid,
fearful hobbit embarking on a journey with dwarves who are seeking revenge on a dragon named
Smaug. He took their home and whilst doing so killed many of their loved ones. This novel is about an
ordinary and common person who through strife and persistence becomes a hero and does
extraordinary things. This main character is Bilbo Baggins. Gandalf persuades him to set off on a great
journey in which they will face much peril. In the face of danger Bilbo overcomes his fear and finds
an inner strength which he has never encountered before. This helps him to finish the journey and
proves Gandalf s claim which he made at the beginning of the novel ... Show more content on

The Hobbit is set in Middle Earth, which is a fantasy land created by J R R Tolkien. In this particular
book the middle earth is restricted to the western lands. The story begins and ends in Hobbiton, a town
in the shire. This is a peaceful town where Bilbo is from and is usually untouched by troubles and
dangerous creatures such as trolls and goblins. As the book progresses the story guides us through the
forest of Mirkwood, the lonely mountains, ruins of Dale, Laketown and of course the Misty
Mountains where the dwarves rightful home is located inside the mountain. I really like the area where
this amazing story is set as the land is full of many interesting and magical places such as the forest of
Mirkwood and the elves palace. The land changes so much throughout the story, it goes through
mountains, forests, fields, lakes, rivers, palaces and kingdoms and this compelled me to read on
because I was so entranced by these amazing regions. The cultural climate is similar to that of England
in the Middle Ages as magic was a powerful force and many believed in the existence of goblins and
elves. Altogether England and middle earth have many parallels. This setting influences the story as it
provides an evil race, which opposes the dwarves, and it influences the magic involved within this
book which plays a massive part in the dwarves fight as without Gandalf s Magic they would not have
made it as far as the misty mountains. I really liked the setting as it enticed me to persist in reading the
book and it added many interesting aspects which influences the story and how the events played

  • 3. Portuguese, Spanish, And Spanish Colonization Of America There are many differences in the way that the Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English colonized their land. Their land was either colonized for trade, profit, and religious freedom. The colonization of their land came with diligent work due to the fact that when colonizing most did not succeed on their first try. There are struggles with opposing colonies trying to fight over land that both places want for themselves. The best part about this is the land they receive can be used for valued goods. The Spanish colonization all began with Columbus in 1492 and advancing for nearly 350 years. Spain conquered and settled most of South America and the Caribbean. Accordingly, it all started when Columbus had been searching for a new route to the Indies. Columbus was sure that he had found it, so he continued his voyages. Settlements by the Spanish that were found earlier were on the islands of the Caribbean. On Columbus s fourth and final voyage in he found a large canoe off the coast of what is now Honduras filled with trade goods. He boarded the canoe and rifled through the cargo which included cacao beans, copper, flint axes, copper bells, pottery, and colorful cotton garments. He took one prisoner and what he wanted from the cargo and let the canoe continue. This was the first contact that the Spanish had with the civilizations of Central America, and this would further influence the Spanish. The Importance Of Art Funding For Education Essay The Importance of Art Funding According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, art is defined as something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings ( Art ). With that being said, it is almost essential that art is maintained as a general course required for every student to take. While having art classes in schools available for students is important, it is also equally as important for the school funding for the art programs to be regulated throughout each district. By using a simple student to teacher ratio to determine how much money should be allotted to each teacher, this reoccurring problem could be solved for good. One of the main problems in the art program throughout the United States is the regulation of funding within the program. For example, while one teacher has one hundred students and another may have seventy, the teacher with seventy students gets a budget of five hundred dollars when the teacher with one hundred gets only three hundred and fifty. On top of that, not only is it unfair to the individual teachers, but it is also happening all over the United States to teachers in the same district. In an article about secondary art programs, it states that the art teacher at School Number Two was operating with 78% of the funds as the teacher at School Number One. Because the two schools are within the same district, this is a difference that seemingly defies explanation (Kraft 55). While ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Battle Of Ap Bac Essay The Battle of Ap Bac The battle of Ap Bac was a small battle engaged between the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and the insurgents, or the People Liberation Armed Forces (Viet Cong AKA VC) with the assistance of American s weapons and advice during the Vietnam War. It took place on 2 January, 1963, near a small village named Ap Bac which is located approximately 65 km southwest of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. (Starry, 2002). As a senior leader, it is important that we have to be technically and tactically proficient. In order to be proficient, we not only need to be trained, but also we have to know how to gain experience from past battles in history using battle assessment, and critical thinking process to study the battle. That way, we know what needs to be improved, how to sustain it, and how would we execute it better next time. Therefore, studying the history of the battle of Ap Bac will enhance the knowledge of how the commanders used the most effective and efficient method for applying decisive action on the battle field. It would be a successful outcome for the South Vietnamese ARVN, and Kennedy s administration would have gained more trust from American people for the presence of American troops in Vietnam, if the American advisers and the ARVN s commanders would have integrated intelligence preparation of the battlefield (ITP) throughout the operations process to identify the gaps of intelligence between human intelligence (HUMINT), ... • 13. Type Of Agonist Essay Types of agonists Receptors can be activated by either endogenous (such as hormones and neurotransmitters) or exogenous (such as drugs) agonists, resulting in a biological response. A physiological agonist is a substance that creates the same bodily responses but does not bind to the same receptor. An endogenous agonist for a particular receptor is a compound naturally produced by the body that binds to and activates that receptor. For example, the endogenous agonist for serotonin receptors is serotonin, and the endogenous agonist for dopamine receptors is dopamine.[1] A superagonist is a compound that is capable of producing a greater maximal response than the endogenous agonist for the target receptor, and thus has an efficacy of more than 100%. An irreversible agonist is a type of agonist that binds permanently to a receptor through the formation of covalent bonds. A few of these have been described.[2][3] A selective agonist is selective for a specific type of receptor. E.g. buspirone is a selective agonist for serotonin 5 HT1A. The ones that will be discussed in the following paragraphs are monarchy, aristocracy, tyranny, oligarchy, and democracy. First, the definition of a monarchy is a state or nation in which the supreme power is actually or nominally lodged in a monarch (Dictionary.com, 2017). Ancient Greek city states that had a monarchy were Sparta (partially), as well as Macedonia and Epeiros. Monarchies were not found often in Ancient Greece (Cartwright and Cartwright, 2017). Ancient Greek city states that had an aristocracy included Athens, as well as Sparta. Both city states had a period of their history ruled by an elite class (Brand, n.d.). There are many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the two most abundant are water vapour and carbon dioxide. Visible light (short wave radiation) passes through the green house gases to reach the Earth s surface, The Earth surface absorbs short wave radiation, the radiation is then released by the surface in the form of infrared radiation. The 21st century is the era of cellphones, with this form of technology communication with friends and families has never been easier with the addition of social media, but for every advantage there is always a disadvantage. Among those disadvantages of mobile phones are stress, anxiety, and motor accidents. To illustrate the effect of Mobile Phones, what is technology? Technology is the appliance of scientific information for functional utilization. We use technology to complete tasks in our daily lives. Humans have used technology to extend their abilities and knowledge. In this technology based era, technology is included in everything we do, it is used at work, education settings, communication, and transportation. If technology is wrongly applied, it can cause more harm than good. Mobile technology has made humans overtly dependent on its abilities, at the rate individuals are on their smartphones, many of our math and reading capabilities will decrease drastically. Firstly, is Stress an effect of mobile technology on a person. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from various challenging situations. The idea isn t original; it was first proposed by Carlyle Thompson, a professor of African American and American literature at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York. There s actually quite a bit of evidence to support it, just as there is to support the queer reading of Nick. Gatsby is described by Nick, his tanned skin and short hair look as though it were trimmed every day (Fitzgerald 50). The short hair and the appearance of daily trimmings could definitely refer to the grooming habits of African American men. Gatsby s West Egg mansion is on more than 40 acres of lawn and garden (Fitzgerald 5), which is specifically interesting, because freed slaves were to be given 40 acres and a mule by decree of Sherman s Special Field Orders, No. 15. More than is stated, but instead of giving us that exact number it could be 41 acres or 400 but we re given 40. It should be noted that 40 acres and a mule was oft promised, but a promise not always kept and inconsistently applied (Oubre 79). There s an obvious metaphor for a man who feels deserving of something he doesn t get, i.e., Daisy. Gatsby would be unlikely to achieve the level of success he did in the roaring 20s if he were black, and some of the upper crust white folk would be likely to notice or take issue with his race, so it s only a plausible theory if he were able to pass himself off as white. House of Usher an appellation which seemed to include, in the minds of the peasantry who used it, both the family and the family mansion. This line gives us a hint from the title toward the supernatural link between the physical house collapsing and the metaphorical fall of the Usher Family. I believe Edgar Poe did this to evoke an uncanny feeling in the reader and to add to the sublime of the short story. This link between living and inanimate gives the story an extra gothic element. There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. The supernatural element of Madeline coming back from the dead or being a ghost creates conflict within the plot and therefore leads to the inevitable fall of the Usher Family. I believe this ghostly figure struck fear into the reader creating a suspenseful follow up, allowing the imagination to take off and picture this supernatural occurrence. This was never an explained supernatural event. It was left up to the reader s imagination and their assumption as to what is real and what is a figment of the characters imagination. • 30. Anxiety In Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight Reflective statement. During our discussion, many aspects of Agilulf s personality were brought up. This caused me to think more deeply on his character. The things I realized made me compare him to myself and I drew several comparisons between his behavior and my generalized anxiety. He seemed to have a more defined anxiety though, which I soon concluded was most likely social anxiety due to his problems communicating. Title: Depression and anxiety in Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight In Italo Calvino s The Nonexistent Knight the main character, Agilulf, is a disembodied knight in Charlemagne s army who is often at odds with his fellow knights due to his perfectionism. He also seems to be more confident in himself before Charlemagne cuts him off for his name being too long winded and tells him that he will never remember it. This could be the incident that set off Agilulf s anxiety and depression, along with his unwillingness to start conversations. Often times sufferers of social anxiety have a defining moment in their childhoods or adolescence which shuts them off from the world, making them distrusting of others and unable to confidently speak with others, although this is not always the case. • 31. The Importance Of Referent Power In Music The power to influence people to do something depends on the knowledge I have concerning the thing and this type of power is called expert power (Hughes, Ginnett, Curphy, 2015). For example, as the choir director of my church back in Ghana, I have a lot of influence on the choir members as individuals and the choir as a whole because of my knowledge and experience in music. The knowledge and experience I have in music wields me more power even over anyone I meet for the first time doing music. As a result, I influence the songs we sing at church, the commitment level of the members and decision making processes towards the choir s development. Referent power is the power that people have over followers because of the relationship between them (Hughes, et al, 2015). I have a low level in referent power at the beginning of my relationship with people around me and even at work because of my personality. I am an introvert and it takes a long time for me to get attached to people around me. For example, when I was working with one of the universities back in Ghana as the administrative assistant to the liaison officer of the university, it took about three months for me to get closer to the secretary. This allowed his speech to connect with a much wider audience than football players, fans, or reporters. Still, today, this speech is easily understood but conveys the powerful message that anything is possible through hard work. It is so well known, that it is used on motivational posters today. He then emphasizes this point another time by saying that every inch of him has to play. He then introduces the counter perspective that Some guys play with their heads. Although the text focused on self leadership, the authors did discuss how self leadership is directly tied into the success of teams. The same strategies, which improve self leadership in oneself, can be extrapolated for a team: removal of negative cues, goal setting, strong team beliefs and team mental imagery are a few examples. These two jobs both use many of the laws of physics. In fact, almost everything they do involves physics. Apollo 13 is a movie that epitomizes what those jobs are like and how much physics is required. The three main laws of physics in the movie were Newton s Law of Universal Gravitation, Newton s First Law, and Newton s Third Law. One main law in Apollo 13 was Newton s Law of Universal Gravitation, defined as F=Gm1m2r2, where G=6.67×10 11. Another prevalent physics law in Apollo 13 was Newton s First Law, which states that a body will persist in its state of rest or of uniform motion unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force. In most scenes of Apollo 13 that show the spacecraft in space this law was visually demonstrated. The Apollo 13 spacecraft was always in uniform motion unless it was acted on by another external unbalanced force. The most significant force in space that would act on the spacecraft was that of gravity. Gravity from other large masses, such as the Earth, Moon, and Sun, acted as the external unbalanced force which changed the spacecraft s speed and direction. If all the gravity in space were to suddenly disappear and the net force on the spacecraft were to be zero then the Apollo 13 ship would simply adhere to its uniform motion tangent to its original path. Another group of scenes in which Newton s First was displayed was when the astronauts moved around in their spacecraft while in space. It is quite easy to tell from watching how the astronauts moved around in 0g that they were exhibiting Newton s First Law. If an astronaut in the movie applied a force in one direction to move in the other that astronaut would then move at a constant velocity (in relation to the ship) as soon as that force was removed.
