A Review of the Doctrine of Agency by Necessity
INTRODUCTION: The doctrine of agency by necessity establishes that authority shall be assumed, in
a necessitous situation, by a person who acts in the interest of the principal. The Indian Contract Act
remains silent as to classification of the doctrine under any section, though many debate that it is to be
under the head of Section 189. This is an extremely ambiguous area in the law of agency, as there are
quite a few specific scenarios apart from the quintessential shipmaster , which are debatable as to
assumption of authority. In this paper, the concepts of the conditions prerequisite to the assumption of
authority shall be discussed, and then an analysis of the special situations of ambiguity with reference
to cases shall be addressed. ANALYSIS Normally, the authority conferred to an agent by his principal
stands as the limits, beyond which any action taken by the agent has no legal validity and makes the
agent liable. But if the circumstances are so demanding, such that the interests of the principal are at
stake due to a situation of emergency, the law confers certain extraneous rights on the agent which
empower him to take certain measures, even those extending to changing the legal position of the
principal, so as to protect the principal s interests. Even in such cases, there are some conditions to be
satisfied. These conditions are, (1) it must be impracticable for the agent to communicate with the
principal, (2) the act of the agent must be absolutely

U.s. Bilateral Trade Agreements
As discussed before, the recent decades has seen proliferation of Preferential Trade Agreements
(PTAs), of which bilateral and regional trade agreements are a part. Of the 162 member countries,
Mongolia was the only WTO member without PFA by 2005 (WTO, 2016). There are several
motivations behind bilateral trade negotiations, originating from the state of the economic and
political situation of participating nations (McMahon, 2006). In the absence of broader trade
agreements, bilateral trade agreements accomplish the objectives of market expansion and trade
liberalisation of nations. Such agreements also affect the domestic front positively by decreasing cost
of imported goods, resulting in lower prices of consumer goods and spurring ... Show more content on

The recently signed Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) (signed on 4th February, 2016) by US and 12
Pacific Rim nations has be seen as one such agreement (Feldman, 2015). The intent of TTP, according
to Feldman (2015), is to pursue the strategy of competitive liberalisation, it was first pursued by the
US President Bush in 2003, in which bilateral, regional and global trade negotiations would
complement and reinstate each another (Sbragia, 2010). The US strategy aimed to create a competition
for liberalisation among its trading partners so that trade reforms in one market led to similar reforms
and tariff reduction in other markets (Chan, 2005). The period witnessed many trading partners re
negotiate their trade pacts with the US, thereby fulfilling the US objective to increase its sphere of
influence and hegemony (Sbargia, 2010). Through TTP, the US now seeks to increase its sphere of
influence in the Pacific Rim along with gaining economic benefits. Since the participating nations
account for 40% of the world s GDP, any rules set by these will have global repercussions (Cao,
2015). The estimates of economic gains from the treaty, however, currently account for only 0.5% of
US GDP (Rines, 2015). This strengthens the argument that the TTP is less about economic benefits
and more about putting down a legal

Man And Evil In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
Although the author Joseph Conrad never met the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz,
who died more than a century before Conrad s birth, their distinct philosophies still have numerous
points of intersection, suggesting some fundamental truths within the structure of the human reality.
Through the novella, Heart of Darkness, Conrad details his perspectives on the faults of man and
reality as a whole, with views often coinciding with many of Leibniz s own, as found in his numerous
philosophical works. Consequently, the two perspectives combine together, like a cyclopean image, to
enhance and deepen each of the two men s philosophies on humanity.
Conrad and Leibniz both note that man has an underlying vulnerability to evil. Among Leibniz s many
conceptual principles is that of perfection vs imperfection, as he claims that no being is entirely flawed
or completely ideal (Burnham, n.d.). Rather, all men possess varying magnitudes of perfection, except
God, however, whom Leibniz believes to be the embodiment of infinite perfection (Burnham, n.d.).
Continuing, Leibniz explains that man s limited perfection causes a lack of good, in contrast to just an
unequivocal inherent evil, that consequently allows man the ability to create evil, arguing that evil and
sin are only negations of positive reality, a principle that corresponds heavily with Leibniz s belief in
theodicy, which serves as an attempt to explain and reconcile evil in the world with its creator, a

The Hardship of Haiti Essay
Haiti is a beautiful Caribbean country that has had more than its fair share of hardship. A culture of
strength and perseverance is evident from the moment one arrives and it only feels stronger the further
one travels from Port au Prince. The people are of African descent, with a strong French influence
creating a uniquely mixed culture that is rare in the western hemisphere. The business climate is such
that there are very few foreign businesses or joint ventures in Haiti and although there are many
historic reasons for that, there now sits immense opportunity. First mover advantage is only an
advantage if the first mover is successful. A firm in the initial stages of market research into Haiti will
be drawn to the dream of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Safety and security is a big risk in most underdeveloped nations, and Haiti is riskier than most.
Finally, the provision of broad based orientation to this new market as it applies directly to business
operations in this new market.
History
Understanding Haiti s past will grant an ideal window into the cultural soul of this nation and may aid
in a deeper realization of why many things appear as they do in this country. Cultural intelligence is
defined as an individual s capability to function and manage effectively in culturally diverse setting
(Ahn Ettner, 2013). This is a highly sought after skill in the interconnected world of globalization
where this individual appears to hold a seemingly natural ability to interpret someone s unfamiliar and
ambiguous gestures in just the way that person s compatriots and colleagues would (Ahn Ettner,
2013). Having an individual with these skills in a firm would reduce the likelihood of communicating
a cultural faux pas that would inadvertently hinder business relations. Gaining knowledge will greatly
contribute to the competitive advantage of a firm. To understand Haiti, one must start in 1492, when
the Island of Hispaniola was first discovered by Christopher Columbus (Central, n.d.). In the initial 25
years of Spanish control of the island the Spanish settlers killed off almost all of the indigenous people
who had originally occupied the island (Central, n.d.). In 1697, Spain ceded to

Analysis
An Analysis of the Second to Last Paragraph in Flannery O Connor s A Late Encounter with the
Enemy
This essay analyzes the first full paragraph on page143 (the second to last paragraph in the story) that
begins with The speaker was through with that war... . This passage appears to be what is going
through General Sash s head right before he dies. The passage begins by saying The speaker was
through with that war and had gone onto the next one and now he was approaching another . The
general goes on to state that all his words are vaguely familiar. This is because he has lived through all
of these wars and as the speaker mentions them they all go by in the General s mind as blurred events
of the past. The General calls the graduates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This I first thought may have had some racial implications, but we later see it is a reference to death.
The fact that he has seen the processional before shows that he has been near death before.
The next part of the section discusses a long finger of music in the General s head, probing various
spots . The music that he is hearing is going into his head and triggering select memories from his
past. The depiction of this probing as a long finger is very invasive and shows how deep these
memories run. Next a series of black things come toward the General and images of the procession
start to break up. There are images of the Civil war like the musket fire as he feels himself moving
backwards. The images then become very violent with sharp stabs of pain and his body riddled in a
hundred places . I imagine this is when he is dying. This is followed by images of the General s
family. At previous moments in the story, we are told the General cannot remember his family that has
passed on, it is only at moments before his death that he remembers them. He remembers very specific
things about them like his wife s narrow face and gold rimmed glasses and his bald headed sons. Here
the General says that the black processional was almost on him . It is here we see the processional is
clearly a reference to death taking him away. When he died he said his hand

Advantages Of Swarm Robotics
Advances in Swarm Robotics and the Stability of a Swarm
INTRODUCTION
Swarm robotics is the new approach to the coordination of multi robot systems that consists of many
relatively smaller robots. The inspiration of this is the social behaviour of many animals and insects
like ants, geese etc. the terms Swarm Intelligence refers to the collective behaviour that is the outcome
of the work of the smaller individuals, each acting autonomously. Swarm intelligence is a property of
systems of non intelligent exhibiting a collectively intelligent behaviour.
Since the 1980 s, swarm robotics has become a major area of research. As new solution approaches
are being developed and validated, it is often possible to realize the advantages of swarm robotic
systems.
In a paper by Dudek et al in 1993, the research on swarm robotics was classified into five areas which
are swarm size, communication range, communication topology, communication bandwidth, swarm re
configurability and swarm unit processing ability. In another paper by Cao et al, the survey of
cooperative robotics was presented in a hierarchical way. This publication was also split onto five
main parts: group architecture, resource conflicts, origins of cooperation, learning and geometric
problems.
In a paper by Hiroshi et al the stability of a swarm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Social insects have the best examples of the best self organized behaviour. For example, ants and bees
are not as powerful alone as they are with their colony or hive respectively. By means of local and
limited communication, they are able to accomplish impressive behavioural feats: maintaining the
health of the colony, caring for their young, responding to invasion and so on. Ants leave a chemical
substance, pheromone, behind to help guide other ants at a later point in time. Thomas et al were
inspired from ants and they made a swarm which would search, retrieve, return, deposit and rest an

Morals Of The Brothers Grimm
Before the Brothers Grimm transcribed what is known today as one of the most recognized fairytales
ever recorded, it was being passed down orally from generation to generation at every corner of the
globe. Various versions of Cinderella s myth can be found in almost every culture in the world, all
very distinct with their own specific qualities, reflecting each society s predominant interpretations of
religious themes. For instance, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm s works were known to promote their
Prussian culture and language, such as Aschenputtel , their German version of Cinderella. Most of
their adjustments were heavily influenced by the criticism of their fellow countrymen, their audience,
and their Christian beliefs.
The Brothers Grimm used a fearful and hopeful tone, syntax and story details in Aschenputtel to
convey the moral of the tale, Virtue will be rewarded, Iniquity will be punished (Perrault, pg. 162),
while still upholding the fairytale conventions. Fairytales were often used to convey a moral, social or
political lesson. Aschenputtel was no different. The Brothers Grimm expressed the hope that their
collection would serve as a manual of manners (Erziehungsbuch) (Tatar, pg.456) for children, a host
that would transmit moral lessons for life. The gory tone of the tale seems to contradict such
statement, but in 1939, Vincent Brun accused the German of perverting the fairy tale by exploiting its
rude primitive instincts to educate...children. (Haase, pg.

Examples Of Torture And Into The Dark Chamber
3.2 Torture and Into the Dark Chamber
Coetzee s novel Waiting for the Barbarians is often considered to be his most powerful work, because
it offers a significant addition to the international discourse on torture in South Africa. For Coetzee, it
represented a unique challenge to his literary craft, namely, how to present such an atrocity as torture
in a novel without repeating it:
For the writer the deeper problem is not to allow himself to be impaled on the dilemma proposed by
the state, namely, either to ignore its obscenities or else to produce representations of them. The true
challenge is: how not to play the game by the rules of the state, how to establish one s own authority,
how to imagine torture and death on one s own terms. (Coetzee ed. Atwell, Doubling the Point 364) ...

The author stated that the dark fascination of torture on [him] and many other South African writers ,
seems to have two particular reasons (Coetzee ed. Attwell 363). The author summed up, the first
[reason] is that relations in the torture room provide a metaphor, bare and extreme, for relations
between authoritarianism and its victims , and reason two that the torture room is a site of extreme
human experience, accessible to no one save the participants (Coetzee ed. Attwell 363. The element of
torture creates a crisis of comprehension for the Magistrate, as well as for the reader, in Waiting for the
Barbarians, however also of portrayal for

The Life Of The Beach
NOT for nothing did the Beach Boys produce all that wonderful music in the 1960s. If you have ever
visited California, you will realise pretty quickly that the state in which they grew up was what
inspired those great sounds. It is the state of the beautiful people. Everybody seems to be laidback
about life and yet most Californians are obsessed with exercise, keeping fit and keeping their looks for
as long as possible (whether it be through botox or going under the knife). Everybody, it seems, goes
out for a run. And yet, they will climb into a car to go to a shopping mall 100 yards down the road.
The climate is wonderful, and if you are able to get behind the wheel of a convertible and drive along
the Pacific Coast Highway with Barbara Ann, I Can Hear Music, Sloop John B or Surfin Safari blaring
and the stunning views of the ocean at hand then you will be able to die happy. It was on my bucket
list and I have done it. There is nothing to beat it. I have also played golf in California and I ve got to
tell you that it is something you have to experience. There is very little rain in this part of the world
but it is the greenest state in America, with everybody who lives there into recycling and conserving
water and energy. To keep their greens and fairways in perfect condition, most of the golf courses use
either reconstituted water or water that has gone through a desalienation plant. And they do a great
job, too. Course architects also use a resilient blend of

Streetcar Named Desire Stereotypes
A Streetcar Named Desire takes place in the 1950 s, an era where American s were recovering from
great losses. Blanche comes to visits Stella after she loses Belle Reve and her teaching job, however
she doesn t inform Stella on when she plans on leaving. In Stella s two bedroom apartment Blanche
feels very uncomfortable because she comes from a high class society in the south, and doesn t seem
to understand why her sister Stella chose the life she has. Immediately she dislikes Stella s husband

According to Koprince Stanley can be described as hyper masculine, using aggressive behavior as
verification of manliness, believing in male superiority, seeing women as sexual objects to be
dominated and being extremely jealous and possessive (50). His aggressive demeanor is a way of
expressing his dominance over everyone in his life. He views his marriage as an ownership instead of
a partnership. His relationship with Stella is more for his pleasure then hers. With Blanche, he can see
right through her, and knows everything that she does is an act. He takes pleasure out of making her
life miserable and making her feel inferior. Unlike Blanche, Stanley is happy the way he is. He doesn t
understand how horrible he is but is happy with the way everything in life goes for him. Stanley s
violence is not only directed against women. In scene three, after he hits Stella, Stanley s friends try to
pull him away, and he being to fight them and nearly throw them off. This shows Stanley s
aggressiveness and violence is directed towards anyway that comes in his way. Although Stanley has a
strong personality, audiences identified with him the most because of his capability to abuse power

Comparing Miss Brill And The Rocking-Horse Winner
Expectations often lead to disappointments.
People in society often feel the desire to belong and find expectants to fit in, succeed in doing so but
not quite in the way that they d hoped for. The perfect example of that situation would be both of the
protagonists in the stories Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield and The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H
Lawrence. Although Miss Brill and Paul both are struggling with coming to terms with how they are
living their lives, they still have their differences such as what exactly they are searching for. In Paul s
case it s his mother s love and for Miss Brill it s fitting in with the crowd. Accompanying that, their
journey to achieving their ambitions turn into their own separate pathways, one being attempting to
satisfy one s wants and to be accepted by taking up gambling and the other desiring to just become

Miss Brill finally starts seeing herself the way that others see her after eavesdropping on a young
couple s interaction where they rudely talked of her But why? Because of that stupid old thing over at
the end there? Why does she come her at all who wants her? Why doesn t she keep her silly old mug
at home? ( Katherine Mansfield. p360). The fact that she does not fit in with society finally clicks in
her mind. Unlike Miss Brill who gets to solve her conflict, Paul is not so fortunate as he tends to
overwork himself in his green pyjamas, madly surging on the rocking horse (D.H. Lawrence. p346)
riding his way to his death.
While Miss Brill and Paul may have had similar dilemmas, they dealt with them entirely differently
with unlike mindsets and goals. The stories teach two great moral lessons of life; one is never satisfied
with what they have, and one must realize how important it is to be realistic about their own life and if

How Horses Changed The Lifestyle Of Indians
The introduction of horses has changed the lifestyle of Indians dramatically. The change, however, has
a good and a bad side. In the article, Hämäläinen indicated that Horses did bring new possibilities,
prosperity, and power to Plains Indians, but they also brought destabilization, dispossession, and
destruction (834). It happened in the late sixteenth century when the Spanish approached the Great
Plain. The horse changed the lives of buffalo hunters who turned to hunt for trade from that for
survival. The core of Comancbe pastoralism was intensive trade in horses and mules, which was
stimulated by a shifting political and economic geography (Hämäläinen, 837). The tribes of the
southern Plains had to make a balance between the trade economy based on horses and the subsistence
economy based on bison. The southern Plains Indians became pastoral people who mainly lived on
hunting and horse keeping. On the positive side, the horse has brought wealth to Southern Plains
Indians. On the negative side, it ended up as a disaster for the grassland ecology and led to famine and
drought.
Pueblo Revolt was led by the Pueblo Indians who drove the Spanish out of New Mexico, confiscated
their horse herds, and embarked on a vigorous livestock (Hämäläinen, 836). The main tribes were
Comanche and Utes. After the Revolt, the Comanches gradually approached to equestrianism and
finally transformed themselves into a fully mounted society. The amount of horsed increased sharply

Influence Of Reading And Writing
Reading and Writing affects me Reading and writing is not something I really enjoyed too much
growing up. After all, a kid who can barely speak English may not enjoy something like grammar or
fall behind others on a reading level. Growing up, reading and society have not really mixed well in
my view. When I was a kid, I would read for fun and for educational purposes, and the society around
me would be saying that the higher you can read the better. In middle school, I started to not read for
amusement, but more for education. Finally, in high school, being forced to read felt like annoying,
busy work. Honestly, I do not have a deep story of how reading has greatly affected me in my more
recent years, but I know that reading created a big image of how the world could or should be today.
Reading and writing has had positive influences on how I act in the real world, but society has been a
negative impact towards reading and writing for most of my years, but not all of them. Reading has
never been a strong point for me, but if I go back to my elementary years society helped boost my will
to read. When I was in the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class, I was at such a low
reading level that I could not read any of the books the other kids in my regular classes were reading
in class. Society in elementary school said that being able to read at a high level makes you cool, so
without a doubt I wanted to fit in with everyone else and read with

The Crisis Caused By The Collapse Of The American...
After the 2008 crisis caused by the collapse of the American investment bank, the Lehman Brothers,
the Europe Union faced difficult decisions to both recover the economy in the short term and in
improving the economy for the long. With their immediate response to the Banks in Europe giving
them €4.5 trillion, the European Union then had to respond to the debt crisis that occurred as they
realised a debt fuel economy was not stable. They then came together to form an Economic union
where by a fiscal treaty was created, the idea behind the treaty was to limit yearly deficits to 0.5% of a
country s GDP [1], this is the idea of a Budgetary policy, aiming there deficit, equilibrium or surplus
to reduce debt. The policy was to follow the principles, it should be timely; this is to allow for quick
support of economic activity during low demand, temporary; to avoid a permanent deterioration in
budget positions, the spending when borrowing low should be mix with both revenue and expenditure
ideas; there can be impacts on demand in the short term affecting consumption allowing for growth, it
should be directed within the stability and growth pact; it provides a common framework and allows
for better measures to be take of the cyclical conditions while strengthening long term fiscal
discipline, and should be accompanied with structural reforms that support demand. {2]

Which soon people get tired of as seen in the last Presidential race. As Professor Jordan Peterson

Victimless Crimes
Victimless crime is defined as illegal behavior in which people willingly engage and in which there
are no unwilling victims. Victimless crimes can be viewed as prostitution, illegal drug use, or illegal
gambling. These are considered crimes because they can harm your body, or life in some way, and
because you willingly do them. There are many other things in our lives that we can do such as
smoking cigarettes, or drinking that can harm our lives and body in some way but are legal. In my
opinion these things are legal, because of the fight put up for them in the past, and for the economy.
Alcohol and cigarettes have taxes on them, so the economy benefits from people buying and using

women who do it because they have to and will eventually save many more women from those people
who force them out on the streets because they will be able to find those people and punish them
instead of punishing the victim. I believe that there are some victimless crimes that if they were
actually legalized would benefit not only people, but our economy. I believe that drug use, such as the
use of marijuana and the drug marijuana should be legalized. I believe this, because no one is forced
to grow it, sell it, or smoke it. They do it because they want to. Yes, it causes bodily damage, but so
does cigarettes and alcohol. The legalization of this drug would benefit the economy and will allow
police to go after the drugs that are actually taking people s lives, instead of the one that really isn t
doing any more harm than alcohol and cigarettes do. I believe that prostitution should never be

will take women from their homes and families and is forcing them to do things that they shouldn t, so
they can make some good money out of it. Of course this happens to men as well, but you mostly only

A Tale Of Two Cities Essay
Capitol Punishment: Toy of Evil Men
One might believe that because capital punishment plays such a large role in Charles Dickens A Tale
Of Two Cities, that Dickens himself is a supporter of it. This just simply is not true. Dickens uses
capitol punishment as a tool to define the evil embodied in both the French ruling class, and the
opposing lower class during the French Revolution; as well as comment on the sheep like nature of
humankind.
In the beginning of the novel, capital punishment serves as the quot;cure all quot; for France s social
problems. After all, quot;death is nature s remedy for all things, and why not legislation s? quot; (62).
It is this attitude that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
quot; They are murdering the prisoners, quot; says Mr. Lorry to Darnay after arriving in France (260).
Again Dickens uses capitol punishment as a way to show the reader the atrocities that humanity can
create when consumed with hatred and evil. Dickens can be seen approaching the subject of the
guillotine with cynical sarcasm when he writes, quot;it was the popular theme for jests; it was the best
cure for headache, it infallibly prevented the hair from turning gray...who kissed La Guillotine looked
through the little window and sneezed into the sack quot; (271). Just as with the Aristocrats, Dickens
does not condone the Jacques use of capital punishment. His disdain is apparent in his tone; which
gnaws away at any inkling the reader may have that the treatment of the prisoners is fair.
Capital punishment is also used as a social commentary by showing how people cling to the popular
attitudes and beliefs of the day. People are quick to adopt the guillotine as their new savior. Dickens
articulates the common attitude towards this when he writes, quot;[the guillotine] was the sign of the
regeneration of the human race. It superseded the cross quot; (271). These quot;followers of the
guillotine quot; are ruthless in their quest for blood as they shout quot;Take off his head...an enemy to
the republic! quot; (280). By showing the ridiculous manner in which the people of France behave,
Dickens teaches us a lesson about

A Dead Man Is Good For Nothing

Argumentative Essay
A Dead Man is Good for Nothing In 1995 Duane Buck was convicted for the murder of his former
girlfriend Debra Gardner and her friend Kenneth Butler. He was sentenced to death in 1997 and his
case should definitely not be taken lightly, but Buck was given the death penalty over life in prison
because of the fact that he was an African American. A state psychologist in his case, Dr. Quijano,
argued that African American criminals are more susceptible to pose a future danger to the public, and
this was the key testimony that the prosecutor relied on. Since then, his case has not been reopened. It
was later admitted by a district attorney at the time of Buck s case that African American jurors were
routinely dismissed by prosecutors. In 2011, his lawyer argued that he deserved a new sentencing
hearing without tainted prejudicial testimony, but his request was ultimately denied and they
continued with the set execution date. The death penalty is prejudice and goes against all religious

punishment by the government. Despite the fact that African Americans make up to just over thirteen
percent of the nation s population, more than forty percent of those currently on the federal death row
are African American. Many may say or believe that the justice system is fair or honorable but the

The Balanced Scorecard Essays
Introduction
The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that was developed by Dr.
Robert S. Kaplan and Dr. David P. Norton in the early 1990 s. Their goal was to provide organizations
with a clear understanding of what to measure in order to improve performance and results (Balanced
Scorecard Institute 2014). The balanced scorecard is a framework that allows an organization to
measure performance and compare it to the organization s strategic objectives and goals (Kinney and
Raiborn 2013, 10).
Purpose of the Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard uses short and long term, internal and external, and financial and nonfinancial
measures to evaluate performance. Management can analyze these measures and compare ... Show

The internal perspective focuses on employees and their contentment with the organization, the quality
of products and services, and cost management (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 11).
Learning and Growth Perspective The learning and growth perspective uses the organization s
resources to adapt to the changing wants and needs of customers. The organizations must ask itself
whether it can continue to improve and create value for its customers (Kinney and Raiborn 2013, 11).
An organization s ability to innovate and improve their products or services directly affects its value.
An organization can create economic growth by developing new products and services, improving
existing products and services, and developing more efficient operations (Kaplan and Norton
January/February 1992, 75).
Financial Performance Perspective The financial perspective uses financial performance measures to
determine whether the organization s strategy and actions are profitable. An organization s financial
goals may be as simple as: to survive, to succeed, and to prosper. Survival can be measured by cash
flow, success can be measured by growth in sales and income, and prosperity can be measured by
increased market share and return on equity. Managers are encouraged to use financial measures like
these to demonstrate their financial position to shareholders. (Kaplan and Norton

Symbolism In Under The Persimmon Tree
(AGG) Many authors use symbolism to show the development of a character, like the author of Under
The Persimmon Tree does. (BS 1) In the beginning of the novel, Najmah changes from a childlike girl
to an adult like woman and the author uses the bukri, or baby goat, to symbolize this change. (BS 2)
When Mada Jan and Habib die Shaheed is born while Golestan Najmah dies, and the author uses
Najmah s first haircut to give a deeper meaning to this change. (BS 3) After Najmah meets Nusrat, she
develops into another version of herself and the author uses another haircut to add another level
behind this literal change. (TS) The author uses symbolism to show Najmah s development throughout
the novel.
(MIP 1) Najmah goes from an innocent child in the family to an adult in the family and the author
tracks this change with the bukri. (SIP A) The author shows that Najmah grows up to be an adult after
her father and brother were taken away. (STEWE 1) After Najmah s brother and father are taken away,
her mother goes into depression and just silently sits. This is like a role reversal between Najmah and
her mother. Before, Najmah used to need to be told to do the work because she was much like a child.
Now, it is the other way around. Najmah knows she has to have the maturity of an adult in order to
survive, so she does. This is why she tells her mother, You may choose not to live, but the baby and I
need you. And the flock needs food. I don t want to die (Staples 38). Right after she

Nuclear Fission And Photovoltaic Energy
According to the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Nuclear energy has a 92% efficiency rating, it is the
highest rating of all other alternative energy sources! Paired with a more environmentally friendly
source like solar, it could be what saves the world from climate change. Nuclear fission and
Photovoltaic energy would bring many benefits to a place like Denver, Colorado. These two sources
would work well together in this place because of the environmental impact, the cost of the sources,
and the efficiency of the two sources. Denver is the ideal location for these two energy sources. In
order for nuclear and solar to work well together the sources need to be located in an isolated desert
area. The location also has to be sunny and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mainly because of global warming and the effects it has on our climate today. Alternative energy
could provide the solution to this because it could eliminate or at least minimize the amounts of
carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Scientists have found that CO2 is a direct contributor to
global warming and alternative energy could save the planet. The two alternative energy sources,
nuclear and solar, could help with this issue. They would be most effective in Denver, Colorado
because it is a desert area that gets very little rainfall and it allows for isolation. Both nuclear and solar
would help because both of these sources do not emit any carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They
also benefit from each other in areas like cost, efficiency, waste and many others. Climate change is
not going to stop anytime soon unless something changes for the better. The only way to save the
planet is by changing the way we generate our energy. Global warming was a problem caused by the
most recent generation and it is now the next generation s job to fix it. Be a part of the

Adolf Meyer (1866 1950)
Adolf Meyer was born on September 13, 1866 in Niederweningen, Switzerland, and died March 17th,
1950 at the age of 83. Adolf is the son of a Zwinglian minister. Adolf was trained as a neurologist
under Auguste Forel at the University of Zurich. In the course of his studies, he spent a year abroad in
Edinburgh, London, and Paris, where he worked under both John Hughlings Jackson and J M Charcot.
In 1892 Adolf moved to the United States after receiving his doctoral degree where he proceeded to
become what is now known as the dominant figure in American psychiatry. He was an influential
psychiatrist, neurologist, neuropathologist, and neuroanatomist taking part in multiple areas of
medical studies. Meyer contributed significantly to the medical literature on psychiatry by writing
papers; Adolf s papers were collected and published in Collected Papers (1950 1952).
When arriving in the United States he continued to go to University of Chicago, where he lectured on
and practiced neurology. Adolf Meyer participated in the positions of a Neuropathologist, he took part
in different positions at different institutes. While at Kanakee State Hospital in Illinois, he was the

The Jewish Population With A Fresh Eyes
Deshen approaches the Jewish population with a fresh eyes. Compared to the other authors of the
works we ve read previously, he skillfully illuminates the past through both an anthropological and
historical lens. His thorough examination of the mellah society, shows the uncanny threads of
commonality the Jewish diaspora throughout that wind through the ages. With this work, the
microcosm of Morocco was revealed with Deshen s discussion of various aspects of life. Modern
stereotypes of the Jewish masculinity, as well as how medieval Jews juggled the spiritual benefits of
baraka with the economic drain of hosting a sage. Most importantly, he shows the enmeshment and
entrenchment in of Jews in a majority Muslim society.
At first glance, the walls of mellah seem like an impermeable membrane between an insular Jewish
community and the majority Muslim population. However, the mellah walls hide an interconnected
society. Through making ties with government officials, Berber protectors in the countryside, and
distant relatives, Moroccan Jewry effectively spanned across Morocco. The extensive self governing
systems among the Jews each town allowed for Jews from other towns maintain connections with
their local officials. Deshen mentions that even though calling on a governing body from another
town, was largely ineffectual. But what s impressive is the fact that it was even necessary at all. It also
mentions that marriages were predominately arranged between men and women of the

Economic Globalization And Chinese Poverty
Economic globalization has been a crucial role and a very commonly discussed issue in today s world.
As explained in the book International Business , the term economic globalization means increasing
economic interdependence of national, regional and local economies across the world through
acceleration of cross border movements of goods, services, technology, and capital (Joshi). Many
people s first impression of economic globalization would be the significant economic growth and
higher living standards it creates, especially in East Asian developing countries. Recently, a heated
conversation about economic globalization centers around its effectiveness in reducing worldwide
poverty. Economic globalization has shown an unprecedented ... Show more content on

Therefore, economies that joined globalization grow significantly faster and steadier, and the growth,
in turn, will prompt developments in poverty reduction.
Economic growth is the most powerful instrument for reducing poverty and improving the quality of
life in developing countries by creating jobs, transforming society and driving human development. As
trade goes on, economic globalization introduces new companies to another and increases
employment across the globe. When people have a job, they have a relatively stable income, and thus
become better off than before. One key of UN Millennium Goals is to halve the proportion of people
living under the international poverty line of $1.25 per day by 2015 from its 1990 level. Thanks to the
amazing speed of economic globalization, this prime target of the Millennium Development Goals
was achieved around 2008, seven years earlier than planned (Chandy and Gertz). It is more surprising
that only the six years from 2005 to 2011 would likely reduce half a million of people in poverty while
the same feat had taken 25 years up to 2005. Needless to say, the speed continues to increase.
Economic globalization is never simply a notion suggesting theoretical benefits in textbook, but has
been making great actual progress in the recent decades.
China has been the biggest winner in this reallocation of resources and

Negative Impact Of Immigration
Immigration is an agent of change, as it disturbed the status quos and existing demographic in these 3
communities. This is not to say that immigration itself is inherently provocative, but simply that it
initiates change to a community. By ( Nations Borders ) In different areas, immigration becomes a
huge issue. The community can become really crowded and over time, the population increases by
high amounts. People around the community can soon become bothered by all these immigrants and
try to take action in to their own hands. For example, the immigrant s neighbors and co workers will
try to deport them or take advantage of them. Although economic and demographic realities may
support opening doors for immigration, such arguments mean little to voters who feel they are losing
out. One poll found that more than 15 percent of Americans say they know someone who has lost a
job to an immigrant, or say they have suffered such a loss. Such citizens wonder, Why should I pay the
cost of immigration? What about me? according to the ( Why Does ). When more immigrants
immigrate to our communities, they begin to annoy people. They could make a negative impact on
jobs throughout the country.

Cultural Imperialism And Iranian Art
Cultural Hegemony and Iranian Art (Iranian Art as Political Discourse)
The following paper will be an evaluation of Iranian artist and the role they play as women living in
exile. The paper will discuss how art becomes a type of political discourse against patriarchal
governments. To do this I will look at the work of Parastou Forohaur an Iranian artist whose parents
were killed when she was young because they were political activist fighting to defend the rights of all
people women and men included. In the paper I will use various sources and terms that have been
discussed throughout the semester in a short literature review. Shirin Neshat will also be discussed and
the role that she plays in created fragmented narratives that help women feel empowered in their lives
in Iran.
As a member of the artistic community something that has always bothered me is the usage of specific
pronouns during artistic compliments. What do I mean by pronouns do you ask? I am talking about
gender pronouns of course, specifically girl, female, and lady. Something that often occurs in art is
statements like the following, which I addressed earlier in the proposal for this project: she is a good

Coca Cola Advertising Research
Priming and Its Effects on Advertisement Ratings of Coca Cola
Why are some advertisements more appealing than others? Can people be influenced to like certain
advertisements more than others? People are constantly surrounded by ads that try to persuade them to
buy certain products instead of others. These ads are geared to appeal to certain cultures, such as
individualist cultures and collectivist cultures. In individualist cultures, people think of being an
individual strive to be independent and different from other individuals. Therefore, individualist
thought processes involve traits, states, or behaviors (e.g. I am honest ) (Trafimow, Triandis, Goto,
1991, p. 649). In collectivist cultures, on the other hand, people think of themselves as part of a group
and strive to do their best to contribute to the group. Therefore, collectivist thought processes involve
group memberships that involve family, society, race, gender, or other groups (e.g. I am a son )
(Trafimow, et al., 1991, p. 649). Little research has been done on whether or not individualistic and
collectivistic thoughts can be manipulated to prefer certain advertisements. This experiment attempts
to demonstrate that the thought process can be manipulated by priming to prefer advertisements that
are different from cultural upbringing. Many researchers have wondered about the influence culture
and upbringing has on people. This had led many researchers to study the different aspects of self,

Karl Marx s Influence On Society
Karl Marx emphasized conflict in the society due to consumerism, religion, intersectionality. He saw
this conflict and determined that hidden structures can benefit him and others by using the term of
ideology which can rely on true or false consciousness. Marx was a unique sociologist who expressed
his own ideas in various ways. Applying to Marx s Theory towards slavery, it showed how the society
use to be and how it impacted the slaves to be part of their culture to manifest the society. Slavery was
based on consumerism through religion, capitalism, culture, and community to enrich the economy.
Slavery had an huge impact towards the society due to their production of goods which were
dominated by merchants and were being paid a certain sum per finished piece, once they had the item
they sold to a distant market. For example: During the market Revolution , American merchants goals
were to think big and risk their money towards the American nationalism which they decided to invest
their money in the putting out system. The putting out system helped merchants to increase wealth by
managing the labor cost, numbers of workers, production goals, and shoe styles to fit certain markets.

outcomes which distinguished the study of the real economic and social life between humanism and

Nonprofit Hospital
Should we receive our treatment, nonprofit or for profit hospitals? Many people would say there is
little distinction between the two. One can receive adequate treatment at either institution; however,
some would say they have specific differences in how care is administered. This work will make
informative comparisons between the two institutions, argue the merits, and explain how they both
operate to save lives.
First, let s look at the organization of a non profit hospital. A non profit hospital is by definition one
that exists solely to be at the service of the community s healthcare needs. One of the most important
distinctions about a non profit hospital is that no person or company makes any money due to non
profit hospitals. Therefore, all of the income received by a non profit hospital is to be used to help not
only the patients, improve the overall health of a particular community.
At the present time, there are about 2,800 non profit hospitals in the United States (Shah et al, 2007).

The quality of care can arguably be based more on policies of individual hospitals and who they
employ rather than its financial circumstances, some researchers have determined certain differences
between how patients are treated in nonprofit and for profit organizations (Mueller, 2016). Nonprofits
may not offer the best quality when it comes down to upgraded technology because they find it hard to
find funding (Mueller, 2016). For profit hospitals usually have more capital, which provides them with
state of the art equipment. George Washington University on the other hand have stated that the two
hospitals are equal in how they administer care and treat their patients. There is nothing saying that the
quality of care given at each institution more effective than the other. The difference lies in the type of

How Relations between Superpowers Worsened between 1959 and the Summer of 1962
There are many reasons why relations between the superpowers worsened between 1959 and the
summer of 1962. The USA and USSR were already enemies. This was because they both represented
different ideas. The USA was capitalist, however, The USSR was communist whose beliefs clashed
with Capitalism. Superpower relations were based on fear and suspicion. They both tried to restrict the

They tried to have bigger better bombs than the superpower.
In 1962 both leaders were testing nuclear bombs. This is when they decided to test in Cuba. This lead
to the Cuban missile crisis in 1962. Overall relations worsened between superpowers in many
different ways ranging from small to large issues. I think the most important factor in worsening
relations was the changes in Cuba, If these had not taken place then Castro would not have eventually
asked for help from the USSR and a war may not have taken place in Cuba. I think all the of things
that took place more important though some were more than others. They all linked together and
eventually caused a Cuban Missile crisis to take place in 1962.
2) Why did a crisis develop in 1962 about Cuba?
A crisis developed in 1962 for many reasons. Firstly a crisis developed because of 2 reasons,
competition and Arms rivalry. Competition was events such as the arms race where both sides fought
to have bigger better weapons than the other side. They also competed against each other through
sport, trying to win the most Olympic gold s and competed by trying to influence peoples beliefs and
getting more people to support their ideology, either communism or capitalism. There was also Arms
rivalry which was similar as this was also competing for better weapons. This all contributed to a

Essay on New technologies dismiss social relationships
In this fast changing world, new technologies have become essential in societies and have an impact
on everyone s life. This process of technologization has grown exponentially since the nineties and the
beginning of the Internet, which has significantly decreased boundaries of communication. Some
expert agreed that new technologies would make communication and exchange easier, and thus give
an incentive to communicate with other people. However, those change have caused communication
to change and people have totally change their way to communicate. Ever since people have become
increasingly dependent on those technologies because they only see their advantages and convenience
for everyday life. New technologies dismiss social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This process has changed a lot over centuries; people do not communicate the same ways. The
Internet access is a good indicator of this change because it allows people to communicate in many
different ways such as social networks, email, or video calls (Skype). According to the INSEE, the
number of French households with an access to the Internet grew from 12 % to 64 % in ten years.
The first reason why new technologies dismiss social relationships is because more technologies mean
less face to face and therefore less communication. Most of digital technologies such as the Internet,
cellphones, television, and video games feature screens, which people use to communicate. According
to Krystel Tong s presentation, 57 per cent of people are more likely to communicate online rather
than by face to face. However, tone and body language are key points of communication, therefore
this lack of face to face communication can lead to misunderstandings. According the BBC news, for
some people this lack of interaction also creates a feeling of isolation. A survey done by researchers
from University of Michigan showed that the more people use Facebook the more they feel lonely and
deserted. For some other people, new technologies can contribute to people acting violently. As Leo
Kelion reported, in August 2013, Hannah Smith, a British teenager aged 14 killed herself after being

Racial And Ethnic Group Interactions
Racial and ethnic group interactions occur daily in the world; in Miami, however one can learn from
the interactions between different ethnic and racial groups in a workplace setting. Mr. Elman adapted
his management style of his apparel factory to the needs of his immigrant workers; his style helped
reduce ethnic friction and returned his investment in high production levels and loyalty (Stepick, 92).
Mr. Elman was successful in getting his employees to willingly agree to pay a cut, which exemplifies
how much clout Mr. Elman had amongst his workers (Stepick, 93). The previous success that the
factory had under his management would likely not be found again under the American management
style, partly because the workers were used to Mr. Elman. Also after more Haitian workers were hired,
the Miami Cubans seemed to create a notion of seniority when decisions had to be made, but instead
of the senior member not working they would opt to work, leaving the new Haitian workers without
work (Stepick, 103). Mr. Elman eventually sold his apparel factory and new more American managers
moved in, these managerial practices took away the things that lead to a positive work environment
and high productivity: personal fans, individual radios, and hot plates (Stepick, 93). The new
American managers admitted their defeat, at least they learned to adapt to a more Latino based
workforce as per one of the plant managers (Stepick, 94). While I understand the new American

The letter that president Andrew Jackson wrote to congress Message To the People Of The United

to white settlements, while being biased towards the Native Americans by stating that they are nothing

the people of Georgia from the danger of the Native American. Therefore, he decides to pass The

Native Americans and forced the Indians to leave their land which caused many innocent live.
President Andrew Jackson did not like the Native Americans. He decided to write a letter to the

saying that removing the Indians from their land is unconstitutional. However, presidents Jackson

Women Are Controlled And Guided By Patriarchal Male Gaze
Essentially, a woman s place in society s stratification is defined by the outward manifestation of her
person, which is identified first and foremost by her gender. Simone de Beauvoir asserts that women
are characterized as others or as not male . This distinction would not be possible if women were not
recognizable by sight as not male. Due to this, it is relevant to look at film and its associations with
visual representations of the woman and the male gaze. As John Berger recognises men act, women
appear...men look at women...women themselves being looked at . This succinctly defines that the
position of women in patriarchal culture depends on look and elucidates that women exist only in
relation to men. Thus, this essay will explore to what extent women are controlled and guided by the
patriarchal male gaze as is reflected in visual popular culture, in particular, narrative cinema, with
specific reference to Laura Mulvey s essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. In her essay,
Mulvey explores the representation of women in culture, specifically the woman as an icon, displayed
for the gaze and the enjoyment of men and discusses two categories of pleasurable looking: voyeurism
and narcissism. Voyeurism is concerned with deriving pleasure from viewing a distant other, and
projecting one s fantasies onto that person, while narcissism is involved with some form of association
or recognition with one s self in the image of another one is viewing. For Mulvey,

CLL is diagnosed with a physical exam, including a complete history, and blood bone marrow tests.
Many types of blood and bone marrow tests can be performed including:
Complete blood count Hematocrit, white blood cell count, platelet count and hemoglobin
concentration.
Cytogenic analysis Microscopic examination of lymphocytes to look for structural changes or changes
in number of chromosomes.
Immunophenotyping Microscopic examination to determine if CLL is from B or T cells.
Bone marrow aspiration biopsy Removal of bone marrow, blood and small piece of bone from the hip
or breastbone. A pathologist will then review for abnormal cells.
Treatment
It is extremely important to be treated by a hematologist or a Doctor experienced in treating CLL. Due
to slow progression, a patient in the early stages does not need immediate treatment and is usually
treated in a conservative manner. This will also help the patient avoid any treatment side effects.
About 1/3 of those diagnosed with CLL in the early stages will never need treatment. Treatment

The First Day Of English Class
I look the first debate judge in the eyes and he nods. Then my gaze drifts to the second one and she
smiles. Finally I look to my right at my final judge, he simply winks at me. I close my eyes and count
to three. It s finally time to begin; this is my time. These next three minutes everyone has to listen to
me and my opinion. I open my mouth, but the only thought going through my head is, why? Why am I
doing this? Why am I here? Why did I make this mistake?
It was the first day of English class and the teacher asked, who here has ever given a class presentation
before? I looked around hoping, praying, that someone else is like me. However fate was not on my
side. Every hand in the class was proudly raised high and I was all alone on my little island of fear.
The teacher looked directly at me and asked why I had not ever done a presentation. I m a clicker, I
mumbled, it was barely audible but the teacher heard it and his face softened. Well Mr. Peschansky it s
time you become a talker.
A psychological study done in the early 70 s found that people are more afraid of public speaking then
of death. Standing at the front of the room in my first debate tournament I realize just how true that is.
All I can hear is my heart hammering away in my chest, my legs feel like they are going to give and I
m shaking all over.
I never opened my mouth when I was in grade school. I was the kid that was always reading. If my
head was not buried in a book then something was probably

Notre Dame Game Report
I was listening to the radio and the Notre Dame football coach was telling them about the game that
they were going to play Navy.
Well the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to be playing Navy this weekend and I have the coach
here with us to tell us a little bit about this, said the radio announcer.
Well, today we are going, says Brian Kelly, to be giving away some tickets to our game this Saturday.
The announcer asked, OK, then let s start. How are we going to do this?
We are just going to pick a random name that has texted a number that is on the Notre Dame website.
If you text that number, some of you can win tickets, said Brien Kelly. I will be picking names for this
in five minutes so you should be quick.
I run and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The coach is still there, so we get to meet him and he congratulates me on winning the tickets. He
explained that the tickets will let me lead the team out of the tunnel at the beginning of the game and I
will get to meet all of the players on the team.
I get to pick the seats and they are right above the tunnel by the end zone. We get an autographed
game ball and a jersey with all the players names signed on the jersey. We will also be given a tour
around the campus.
Dad and I get talking about what we will see at the game and we get really excited. This will be my
first college football game and I really want to go and visit the campus. The golden dome, grotto,
touchdown Jesus, and the coach statutes are some of the things we will see.
As we are preparing to go to the game, we get all of our Notre Dame gear together to wear and plan
where we are going to eat. Stadium seats with the foam are necessary because the stadium seats are
made of wood. Bug spray is in the bag to help us not get eaten by bugs in the stadium. This was the
best game I have ever gone to because Notre Dame scored 3 touchdowns over Navy and they won the
game! I felt very excited that this was very worth my time, and I was excited I won this in a

Mise En Scene
Sound and smell crowded Julios mind, pure ecstasy mixed with the over stimulation of thumping
music and free flowing drugs pushed his pupils wide and his pores open, his brow furrowed and his
mouth clenched into a dumb grin. With each bass filled kick of the music and flash of the cyan lights
his eyes flicked left to right, his ocular nerves flaring with excitement at the melting colors and
waving sound that he was immersed in. The pleasing form of a woman half his age moving along with
the music, her outline dragging behind her motion leaving a line of rainbow outlines, each one like a
frame of a movie.
On the stout table in front of him there was a shot glass half filled with a viscous blue substance,
Slither, the best party drug ever found. He wrapped his hand around it and took another sip, the
melting colors suddenly shifting from blobs of rainbow to fractals, replicating out into infinity. What
was once a table or a dancing woman became a infinite projection of colors and sounds, tastes and
smells all coalescing and falling away in conjunction, the universe came to Julio in waves of beauty
and absolution, each time it hit it built up on his mind until the final wave broke the damn of ecstasy
and the young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately for the completely inebriated crowd the carnage had only just begun. The bartender
scrambled for the door to the kitchen, but a masked gunman blocked his path and shot him down
without hesitation. From the crashed skycar several more gunmen emerged, each masked and
unmarked. They stepped over the broken bodies of patrons and fired into the panicked crowd with
ruthless purpose. Julio was shocked into reality as his dancing partners chest was ravaged by a flurry
of flechettes, sending her slumping onto him for support before she spasmed and fell

  • 2. A Review of the Doctrine of Agency by Necessity INTRODUCTION: The doctrine of agency by necessity establishes that authority shall be assumed, in a necessitous situation, by a person who acts in the interest of the principal. The Indian Contract Act remains silent as to classification of the doctrine under any section, though many debate that it is to be under the head of Section 189. This is an extremely ambiguous area in the law of agency, as there are quite a few specific scenarios apart from the quintessential shipmaster , which are debatable as to assumption of authority. In this paper, the concepts of the conditions prerequisite to the assumption of authority shall be discussed, and then an analysis of the special situations of ambiguity with reference to cases shall be addressed. ANALYSIS Normally, the authority conferred to an agent by his principal stands as the limits, beyond which any action taken by the agent has no legal validity and makes the agent liable. But if the circumstances are so demanding, such that the interests of the principal are at stake due to a situation of emergency, the law confers certain extraneous rights on the agent which empower him to take certain measures, even those extending to changing the legal position of the principal, so as to protect the principal s interests. Even in such cases, there are some conditions to be satisfied. These conditions are, (1) it must be impracticable for the agent to communicate with the principal, (2) the act of the agent must be absolutely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bilateral Trade Agreements As discussed before, the recent decades has seen proliferation of Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs), of which bilateral and regional trade agreements are a part. Of the 162 member countries, Mongolia was the only WTO member without PFA by 2005 (WTO, 2016). There are several motivations behind bilateral trade negotiations, originating from the state of the economic and political situation of participating nations (McMahon, 2006). In the absence of broader trade agreements, bilateral trade agreements accomplish the objectives of market expansion and trade liberalisation of nations. Such agreements also affect the domestic front positively by decreasing cost of imported goods, resulting in lower prices of consumer goods and spurring ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The recently signed Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) (signed on 4th February, 2016) by US and 12 Pacific Rim nations has be seen as one such agreement (Feldman, 2015). The intent of TTP, according to Feldman (2015), is to pursue the strategy of competitive liberalisation, it was first pursued by the US President Bush in 2003, in which bilateral, regional and global trade negotiations would complement and reinstate each another (Sbragia, 2010). The US strategy aimed to create a competition for liberalisation among its trading partners so that trade reforms in one market led to similar reforms and tariff reduction in other markets (Chan, 2005). The period witnessed many trading partners re negotiate their trade pacts with the US, thereby fulfilling the US objective to increase its sphere of influence and hegemony (Sbargia, 2010). Through TTP, the US now seeks to increase its sphere of influence in the Pacific Rim along with gaining economic benefits. Since the participating nations account for 40% of the world s GDP, any rules set by these will have global repercussions (Cao, 2015). The estimates of economic gains from the treaty, however, currently account for only 0.5% of US GDP (Rines, 2015). • 4. Man And Evil In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness Although the author Joseph Conrad never met the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who died more than a century before Conrad s birth, their distinct philosophies still have numerous points of intersection, suggesting some fundamental truths within the structure of the human reality. Through the novella, Heart of Darkness, Conrad details his perspectives on the faults of man and reality as a whole, with views often coinciding with many of Leibniz s own, as found in his numerous philosophical works. Consequently, the two perspectives combine together, like a cyclopean image, to enhance and deepen each of the two men s philosophies on humanity. Conrad and Leibniz both note that man has an underlying vulnerability to evil. Among Leibniz s many conceptual principles is that of perfection vs imperfection, as he claims that no being is entirely flawed or completely ideal (Burnham, n.d.). Rather, all men possess varying magnitudes of perfection, except God, however, whom Leibniz believes to be the embodiment of infinite perfection (Burnham, n.d.). Continuing, Leibniz explains that man s limited perfection causes a lack of good, in contrast to just an unequivocal inherent evil, that consequently allows man the ability to create evil, arguing that evil and sin are only negations of positive reality, a principle that corresponds heavily with Leibniz s belief in theodicy, which serves as an attempt to explain and reconcile evil in the world with its creator, a ... Cultural intelligence is defined as an individual s capability to function and manage effectively in culturally diverse setting (Ahn Ettner, 2013). This is a highly sought after skill in the interconnected world of globalization where this individual appears to hold a seemingly natural ability to interpret someone s unfamiliar and ambiguous gestures in just the way that person s compatriots and colleagues would (Ahn Ettner, 2013). Having an individual with these skills in a firm would reduce the likelihood of communicating a cultural faux pas that would inadvertently hinder business relations. Gaining knowledge will greatly contribute to the competitive advantage of a firm. To understand Haiti, one must start in 1492, when the Island of Hispaniola was first discovered by Christopher Columbus (Central, n.d.). In the initial 25 years of Spanish control of the island the Spanish settlers killed off almost all of the indigenous people who had originally occupied the island (Central, n.d.). The music that he is hearing is going into his head and triggering select memories from his past. The depiction of this probing as a long finger is very invasive and shows how deep these memories run. Next a series of black things come toward the General and images of the procession start to break up. There are images of the Civil war like the musket fire as he feels himself moving backwards. The images then become very violent with sharp stabs of pain and his body riddled in a hundred places . I imagine this is when he is dying. This is followed by images of the General s family. At previous moments in the story, we are told the General cannot remember his family that has passed on, it is only at moments before his death that he remembers them. He remembers very specific things about them like his wife s narrow face and gold rimmed glasses and his bald headed sons. Here the General says that the black processional was almost on him . Various versions of Cinderella s myth can be found in almost every culture in the world, all very distinct with their own specific qualities, reflecting each society s predominant interpretations of religious themes. For instance, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm s works were known to promote their Prussian culture and language, such as Aschenputtel , their German version of Cinderella. Most of their adjustments were heavily influenced by the criticism of their fellow countrymen, their audience, and their Christian beliefs. The Brothers Grimm used a fearful and hopeful tone, syntax and story details in Aschenputtel to convey the moral of the tale, Virtue will be rewarded, Iniquity will be punished (Perrault, pg. 162), while still upholding the fairytale conventions. Fairytales were often used to convey a moral, social or political lesson. Aschenputtel was no different. The Brothers Grimm expressed the hope that their collection would serve as a manual of manners (Erziehungsbuch) (Tatar, pg.456) for children, a host that would transmit moral lessons for life. In the article, Hämäläinen indicated that Horses did bring new possibilities, prosperity, and power to Plains Indians, but they also brought destabilization, dispossession, and destruction (834). It happened in the late sixteenth century when the Spanish approached the Great Plain. The horse changed the lives of buffalo hunters who turned to hunt for trade from that for survival. The core of Comancbe pastoralism was intensive trade in horses and mules, which was stimulated by a shifting political and economic geography (Hämäläinen, 837). The tribes of the southern Plains had to make a balance between the trade economy based on horses and the subsistence economy based on bison. The southern Plains Indians became pastoral people who mainly lived on hunting and horse keeping. On the positive side, the horse has brought wealth to Southern Plains Indians. On the negative side, it ended up as a disaster for the grassland ecology and led to famine and drought. Pueblo Revolt was led by the Pueblo Indians who drove the Spanish out of New Mexico, confiscated their horse herds, and embarked on a vigorous livestock (Hämäläinen, 836). This just simply is not true. Dickens uses capitol punishment as a tool to define the evil embodied in both the French ruling class, and the opposing lower class during the French Revolution; as well as comment on the sheep like nature of humankind. Just as with the Aristocrats, Dickens does not condone the Jacques use of capital punishment. Capital punishment is also used as a social commentary by showing how people cling to the popular attitudes and beliefs of the day. People are quick to adopt the guillotine as their new savior. Dickens articulates the common attitude towards this when he writes, quot;[the guillotine] was the sign of the regeneration of the human race. It superseded the cross quot; (271). He was sentenced to death in 1997 and his case should definitely not be taken lightly, but Buck was given the death penalty over life in prison because of the fact that he was an African American. A state psychologist in his case, Dr. Quijano, argued that African American criminals are more susceptible to pose a future danger to the public, and this was the key testimony that the prosecutor relied on. Before, Najmah used to need to be told to do the work because she was much like a child. Now, it is the other way around. Najmah knows she has to have the maturity of an adult in order to survive, so she does. This is why she tells her mother, You may choose not to live, but the baby and I need you. Alternative energy could provide the solution to this because it could eliminate or at least minimize the amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Scientists have found that CO2 is a direct contributor to global warming and alternative energy could save the planet. The two alternative energy sources, nuclear and solar, could help with this issue. They would be most effective in Denver, Colorado because it is a desert area that gets very little rainfall and it allows for isolation. Both nuclear and solar would help because both of these sources do not emit any carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. They also benefit from each other in areas like cost, efficiency, waste and many others. Climate change is not going to stop anytime soon unless something changes for the better. Compared to the other authors of the works we ve read previously, he skillfully illuminates the past through both an anthropological and historical lens. With this work, the microcosm of Morocco was revealed with Deshen s discussion of various aspects of life. Modern stereotypes of the Jewish masculinity, as well as how medieval Jews juggled the spiritual benefits of baraka with the economic drain of hosting a sage. Most importantly, he shows the enmeshment and entrenchment in of Jews in a majority Muslim society. At first glance, the walls of mellah seem like an impermeable membrane between an insular Jewish community and the majority Muslim population. However, the mellah walls hide an interconnected society. Through making ties with government officials, Berber protectors in the countryside, and distant relatives, Moroccan Jewry effectively spanned across Morocco. The extensive self governing systems among the Jews each town allowed for Jews from other towns maintain connections with their local officials. One key of UN Millennium Goals is to halve the proportion of people living under the international poverty line of $1.25 per day by 2015 from its 1990 level. Thanks to the amazing speed of economic globalization, this prime target of the Millennium Development Goals was achieved around 2008, seven years earlier than planned (Chandy and Gertz). It is more surprising that only the six years from 2005 to 2011 would likely reduce half a million of people in poverty while the same feat had taken 25 years up to 2005. • 32. Coca Cola Advertising Research Priming and Its Effects on Advertisement Ratings of Coca Cola Why are some advertisements more appealing than others? Can people be influenced to like certain advertisements more than others? People are constantly surrounded by ads that try to persuade them to buy certain products instead of others. These ads are geared to appeal to certain cultures, such as individualist cultures and collectivist cultures. In individualist cultures, people think of being an individual strive to be independent and different from other individuals. Therefore, individualist thought processes involve traits, states, or behaviors (e.g. I am honest ) (Trafimow, Triandis, Goto, 1991, p. 649). In collectivist cultures, on the other hand, people think of themselves as part of a group and strive to do their best to contribute to the group. Therefore, collectivist thought processes involve group memberships that involve family, society, race, gender, or other groups (e.g. I am a son ) (Trafimow, et al., 1991, p. 649). Little research has been done on whether or not individualistic and collectivistic thoughts can be manipulated to prefer certain advertisements. Racial And Ethnic Group Interactions Racial and ethnic group interactions occur daily in the world; in Miami, however one can learn from the interactions between different ethnic and racial groups in a workplace setting. Mr. Elman adapted his management style of his apparel factory to the needs of his immigrant workers; his style helped reduce ethnic friction and returned his investment in high production levels and loyalty (Stepick, 92). Mr. Elman was successful in getting his employees to willingly agree to pay a cut, which exemplifies how much clout Mr. Elman had amongst his workers (Stepick, 93). The previous success that the factory had under his management would likely not be found again under the American management style, partly because the workers were used to Mr. Elman. Also after more Haitian workers were hired, the Miami Cubans seemed to create a notion of seniority when decisions had to be made, but instead of the senior member not working they would opt to work, leaving the new Haitian workers without work (Stepick, 103). Mr. Elman eventually sold his apparel factory and new more American managers moved in, these managerial practices took away the things that lead to a positive work environment and high productivity: personal fans, individual radios, and hot plates (Stepick, 93). Women Are Controlled And Guided By Patriarchal Male Gaze Essentially, a woman s place in society s stratification is defined by the outward manifestation of her person, which is identified first and foremost by her gender. Simone de Beauvoir asserts that women are characterized as others or as not male . This distinction would not be possible if women were not recognizable by sight as not male. Due to this, it is relevant to look at film and its associations with visual representations of the woman and the male gaze. As John Berger recognises men act, women appear...men look at women...women themselves being looked at . This succinctly defines that the position of women in patriarchal culture depends on look and elucidates that women exist only in relation to men. Thus, this essay will explore to what extent women are controlled and guided by the patriarchal male gaze as is reflected in visual popular culture, in particular, narrative cinema, with specific reference to Laura Mulvey s essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema. In her essay, Mulvey explores the representation of women in culture, specifically the woman as an icon, displayed for the gaze and the enjoyment of men and discusses two categories of pleasurable looking: voyeurism and narcissism.
