6 Steps to Successful Research Define Locate Select Organise Present Assess
Step 1:  Defining What am I expected to do / produce?  What do I know already?  What questions do I need to answer?  What do I need to find out?
Step 2:  Locating What sort of information do I need?  Where do I find this information? Should I use catalogues, indexes or computers?
Step 3 :  Selecting What do the resources I have located tell me?  Do they answer my questions? Have I found enough information to complete the task?  Do I have the skills to extract and use the information?
Step 4 :  Organising What do I need to record?  Can I make effective notes?  Can I organise my notes?
Step 5 :  Presenting How am I going to pull this information together and present it so that I communicate effectively?
Step 6 :  Assessing Before handing in your work assess and check: Spelling, punctuation, grammar, name on work Did I include a bibliography? What did I learn from this task? Do my new skills and knowledge match the skills I was supposed to gain from this assignment? Is there anything I need to follow up with my teacher?  Assess and review your work on return: How well did I do?  Am I satisfied with the result? Did the result meet my expectation?  Do I need more practice with any stage or skill? Do I need to follow up anything with my teacher?
