Glycolysis is the first step in the breakdown of glucose to extract energy for cellular metabolism. It consists of an energy-requiring phase where glucose is modified and split into two three-carbon molecules called pyruvates. This produces two ATP molecules and two NADH molecules. Glycolysis occurs in the cytosol of cells and is the first stage of cellular respiration, though some anaerobic organisms also use this pathway without oxygen. The pathway converts glucose into pyruvate through a series of ten steps.
