The document summarizes Olivia Waller's process of creating a CD cover design. It describes the steps she took, including using shape and fill tools to create the initial background design, adding a gray rectangle for detail, and then copying and pasting a CD template. Later steps included adding angel wings and a halo graphic, and then adding text for the band and album names. Olivia reflects on changes made compared to her initial experiment, such as changing the background color and adding a photo. The final design utilizes photo editing tools to cut out a band photo and add a patterned background.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. Process
To start off my product I used the shape tool
to create the main shape of my CD cover and
used the fill bucket to fill the shape in one
colour that matches with the theme of my
band so I chose the colour pink.
I used the shape tool again creating a thinner
rectangle for the left side of the case to give it
more detail and look realistic. I used the
colour grey with the fill bucket tool to help it
stand out from the rest showing it is there for
detail. For the first steps of my product I think
that it is a good start and a good layout and
presentation for a CD cover. I will able to work
with it to make it link with my band. My next
steps will be to show that it is a CD cover and
make it appealing for my audience. So far this
is the same as my experiment as this is the
background I wanted for my cover as it
matches with my colour scheme and style
sheet. I even used the grey rectangle on my
experiment to add more detail and to make it
look like a real cover giving it detail. I am
basing the first steps of product off my
experiment and changing things along the
way.
3. Process
This step I used the copy and paste tool for
the template of the CD to show straight
away to my audience that it is a CD cover for
the band.
I then used the fill bucket to change the
colour of the CD to give it more of a theme
and match with the rest of the product. This
helps all the colours to suit and match each
other. I used a lighter pink as the main
colour of the disk to give it a separate theme
from the rest of the product and help it to
stand out. I used grey for the edges and
middle so that the main focus is on the CD.
All of these colours also match with the
colour scheme I had for the project. Overall I
think that the product is coming along well
and with a few more details it will give more
of an effect and look realistic. The colours
used on this screenshot are the same ones I
used on my style sheet as the band are seen
as girly so these colours give it a girly theme.
Having the CD coming out the side of the
cover is different to my experiment as it is a
detail I have added as I think it helps to show
what the product is as you can see straight
away that it is a CD and cover by this design.
4. Process
In this screenshot I have added more detail onto
the product helping it to fit with the band.
I have used the copy and paste tool to add the
angel wings and halo to the disk to fit the theme
but be a little bit different to the CD cover by
giving it less detail. This photo originally had a
white background so I used the magic wand tool
to get rid of it and make it by itself and copied the
photo three times to add onto the CD. I used the
magic wand tool as it is easy to get rid of parts of
the image that I do not want or are not needed.
The photo of the halo also had a white background
so I used the magic wand tool again to get rid of it.
I placed this halo at the top of the cover as the
band is called “Olivia’s Angels” it fits with the
name and adds a girly detail to it. So far I think
that it looks effective and realistic and will appeal
to my overall audience. I used a different image of
a halo on this product than in my experiment as
this is more obvious of what the image is. Adding
the angel wings and halo is something different I
added so it is not on my experiments, I like this as I
think it adds more detail to the CD and helps to
show the theme straight away.
5. Process
I have now added text onto my product using
the text tool, I added the name of my band and
the title of the album, this step makes the
product look more realistic and effective. I have
changed the font for my title to one similar to
my style sheet as it is girly and shows what sort
of theme the band has and how they are
presented. The font used for “Olivia’s Angels” is
similar to the ones I sampled for my style sheet
and also is seen on my experiments as it fits the
theme and style for my band. This will appeal to
my audience as it is girly and eye catching. The
font I used for the album name “Girls” is more
bold and eye catching so that the audience
knows what the album is called straight away
and is easy to be noticed. I also used a bold text
for my title for my experiment. This design is
very similar to how I did my experiments but
now that I have started to put it together I think
I will change the appearance as I think I can
make it look more detail and make it look more
realistic. Overall I think everything is coming
together and it is starting to look like a CD cover.
6. Process
I took the paint bucket and filled the background
which was pink and changed it to white as I have
changed my mind with what I want to do with the
background as I thought it was too much and
colourful. I changed it to white as I want to use a
photo of the band as the front cover as this will make
it more eye catching. This will appeal to my audience
as it will help to grab their attention. I have redone
the front to make it less bright and more suited for
the band. I think that this idea will look a lot better
for the cover and look more realistic. It is different to
my experiment as I thought I would have a bright
background as it would match with my colour
scheme however I think it was too much so I have
learnt from my experiment and the start of this and
changed it to white. Using a photo for the
background is a better layout and helps the audience
with seeing who the band is and who the album is
by. It makes it look more effective also and detailed.
Overall I think the changes I have made are going to
make my product look a lot better and more realistic
for my band and audience.
7. Process I have used the ideas from my other slide about adding
a photo onto the cover of the album as you are able to
see straight away who the band is.
I used the paint bucket tool to change the colour of
both cover and disk as I thought these colours fit best
with the photo but I don’t think that they suit the
theme of the band so I would like to change the
colours used. I changed the colours on this but the
layout is similar to my experiment however I am going
to change it as I don’t think it looks realistic and I could
add other things onto the product to make it look
more effective and look more appealing for my target
audience, I also need to change it so that it fits with
the girly angel theme and use detail to link all my
products. My thoughts on my product are that I need
to change the colour scheme and add more detail to
help them link e.g. colour scheme and girly detail.
once I have done I feel the CD cover will be complete.
8. Process
This is my final process of my CD cover, I have changed it
a lot.
I have used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the
background of my photo so that it looks more effective
and not taken in a bedroom. Using this tool I am able to
cut around all the photo and the difficult details that
some tools could not do making this tool the most
practical one. I think this step has massively improved my
product. Once I had cut out the background I found a
background that would suit my theme and band and
added the background onto my CD cover giving the cover
a better colour scheme and a theme with the angel
pattern. The background is pink which matches with the
overall colour scheme so it will appeal to my audience
with the primary audience being female.
I added a rectangle with the shape tool to the back of my
text, I changed the opacity of the colour of the rectangle
so that it helped to make the text stand out from the rest
of the background. I am a lot happier with how this has
turned out and I think this is a good place to finish this
product. This final design is a lot different to how I
planned in my experiment as the only thing I have kept
the same is the grey rectangle on the left hand side as
detail but I prefer how my final design has come out as it
will appeal more to my audience and fits all the themes.
9. Process
I started off with copying and pasting a photo of a
pink and white tie dye as this matching with my
colour scheme and gives the whole style a colourful
and fun vibe for my audience. The colour scheme is
pink and girly this is appealing to my audience as
the primary target audience is female so having this
colour suits them the best.
I used the magnetic lasso tool on my photo of the
band to get rid of the background to make it look
more effective and helps to stand out from the
background. I used this tool as it you can get round
all the details and make it clean.
To fill in the empty spaces I have added a image of
angel halo and wings which I have changed the
opacity of to make them fade into the back just to
add detail and keep the angel theme running
through all of my products. I think for the first
process this product has turned out well. I like the
background and colour scheme of the product as it
all suits well.
From this I have changed this design from my
experiment, the only thing that is similar is having a
photo of the band in the middle of the T-shirt but
everything else I have changed but I think it is
better from my original design and will appeal well
to my audience.
10. Process
In this screenshot I added text using the text tool to add
the bands name “Olivia’s Angels” this helps the audience
to see who the t-shirt is advertising. In my experiment I
used a plain white T-shirt I changed this idea as I felt it
was boring and didn’t grab much attention whereas the
T-shirt and colour scheme I have used for my final
product I think is much better and helps with grabbing
attention and will appeal more to my audience. I also
used the magic wand tool on my angel halo to get rid of
the background. I used this tool as it is quick and easy to
use to get rid of the white background that is not
needed. I moved this to the top of my text as this also is a
detail which I will use on each product as it helps to link
them altogether and gives them a theme. I have used this
image of the halo throughout my experiments and final
products as I think it helps to show the theme and links
all my products together.
Overall some of the detail I have added onto my t-shirt is
similar as the halo is the same on my experiments so I
have used that idea which also links with the other
products. The font used on the T-shirt is similar to my
experiment as well and is also link throughout the
project.
11. Process
The layout for my final product of my magazine is a lot
different from what I had originally planned for my final
product however I do prefer this layout better then what I
had planned helping to improve my product and making it
look better. I think it will appeal better to my audience
also as from previous research my audience prefer
photos, so this layout gives you a main focus which is the
photo making it appeal more to the audience.
I have stuck with my colour scheme throughout this
product and kept the little details in such as the angel
wings and halo. Having these helps to link all the products
together and give them a theme.
I have used the magnetic lasso tool on the photo of my
girl band to take away the background and make them
stand out and bring the most attention. This was the most
effective tool to use as it is precise and you can get to all
the details to make it look realistic.
I used the text tool to add text onto the magazine so far I
added the main title of the article “Olivia’s Angels” as it is
the name of the band and is the main focus of the article.
I used a font similar to my style sheet as it gives a girly
theme and links with the rest of my products. Underneath
I have the name of magazine brand “Girlband magazines”
this font is simple as it isn’t a focus but helps to add detail
and make it look more realistic.
Overall I like how my product is looking and with more
detail it will look better.
12. Process
This is the final process of my product. I think the overall
layout looks good and realistic and the overall look is
effective and shows the audience straight away what the
product is.
The font I have used for the rest of my text links with my
style sheet as it is girly and matches with the theme
throughout. With my primary target audience being
female having a font that is seen as girly it helps to appeal
to my primary audience more and suits the target
audience well.
This final product has changed from my planning but still
links in with my style sheet as I have used the same colour
scheme and similar fonts. With the text tool I have edited
part of it to make it bolder and bigger this helps to add
something eye catching into the product and make it more
exciting. I used a different font for this also as it helps it to
stand out from the rest of text.
I used the magic wand tool to get rid of the background for
my angel halo, I have added this as the rest of my products
include an image of a halo so I have kept the theme
running through all my products. I used this tool because I
think it is the quickest tool to use. This was the most
effective tool and it cuts out the unwanted background of
the image.
Overall I think that this final product compared with my
planned product is a lot different but I feel that the final
product will appeal a lot more to my audience as it looks
more realistic and thought out.
