An ant named Bina comes across a caterpillar trapped in its chrysalis and mocks it for being unable to move, unaware that it will soon emerge as a beautiful butterfly. A few days later, Bina sees the same butterfly and realizes it was the caterpillar, which reminds Bina that appearances can be deceiving and not to judge based on outward looks alone.

What did you like about your image?
I like that you can clearly see what my image is, however it has very little detail. I think
this was achieved by my using realistic colours of the animals that I recreated. I felt like
a necessary detail to include however was the eyes of my animals, adding simple
shapes such as circles to the animals body as eyes give it more life and makes all of the
shapes come together. I used the same colour in different shades to help show
dimension and personality to the image. I like what I added some simple details to the
background, as this added more interest into the images how ever I didn’t add to
much detail that the animals are still to main focus of each scene.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I where to do this again I would add some shading to the hollow areas of the
animals to help them to look more realistic and three dimensional. I could also a more
features such as tails on to the animals that I chose ,however these features where not
visible on the photographs that I took the animals from. I could also add more details
to add more interest and life into the images.

What did you like about your image?
What I like about my rotoscope is the fact that you can clearly tell at a quick glance
that it is a young female. I think this is because of the face shape that is clear within
the image. I also think that the eye detail helps to enhance her feminine feature. For
example to the black line above the eye represents make-up and big eyelashes. I think
that the white glint in in the iris and pupils of the eyes make the image look much
more realistic and relatable. I think the use of lighter and darker shades of the same
colour works well to add dimension to the face and make it seem more realistic. I
think that by adding shadows to areas such as the chin and nose also helped to make
it look more three dimensional.
What would you improve if you did it again?
Doing this image again or a similar one I would take more time in adding details. For
example I would add more texture to the hair by adding a few different shades of the
same could to bring it to life a bit more. To improve it further I could also add a
background to add context to the image, I think this would benefit the image as it
would make it look more finished and clean.

What did you like about your image?
My favourite thing about this image it that I have incorporated many different
techniques to create it. For example I used different shapes to create the swan in her
dream. I like the simplicity of the swan as I didn’t want it to be the main focus of the
image, however it still has some subtle details to make it look like what is it. I did this
by using very few colours. I also used some rotoscoping in this image as I rotoscoped
Natalie Portman. I thought this would more affective with a person as if I where to use
shapes and manipulate them I would not have been able to get accurate enough
shapes. I like that I added the text to the image, because it helps to add some context
to the image and makes the scene that I created easier to understand.
What would you improve if you did it again?
To improve this piece of work I could add more detail to the lady to give her more of
the attention within the image. I could have added more shading to her face to make
it look more dimensional and realistic. I would also add more detail to her eye area to
make it more interesting. To improve I would change the font of the text to make it
easier to read, but with the same style so that it fits well with the rest of the image.

What did you like about your image?
I like that I have shown different used of the text tool. I have shown
the different fonts available and the different thing that you can can do
with text. I like that I had chance to experiment with different font and
affects you could add to them or do with them to make them look
better or more affective for what they where aimed for.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I where to do this again I would experiment with different colours to
see what worked well together. I would also write is capital letters
when filling them in with a picture as more of the picture would shoe
through and it would look over all more affective.

What did you like about your image?
I like the amount of postproduction that I did on both of my comic
book images. I think that I did enough editing to effectively give them
that typical comic book style. However not to much that the people
within them are still easily identified and look like themselves. I
particularly like the colours that I used for Selena Gomez I think they
work well together in the final image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
To improve these images I could have altered the brightness of Abbie
Branning. I would do this because the final image came out to under
exposed and some of her facial features are more difficult to
distinguish.

What did you like about your image?
The things that I like about my photostory image include the clear
understanding of the narrative and that all of the photographs fit
perfectly together. I think that the narrative of my photostory is easily
understood as it is very simple and has no complications. I decided on
a simple narrative as I could only use 8 photographs to tell the sorry in.
I like that all of the photographs fit perfectly together as it gives a
clean and finished look to the outside of the image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I where to do this again, to improve it I could apply some more post
production to the photographs. I would use colour correction to make
all of the photographs have the same colouring as some are warm
tones and some have a slightly cooler tone to them.

What did you like about your image?
I like that the image I created is simple yet affective. I like that I only
used few colours as this gives it an affective cartoony look however still
allowed me to add some detail in shading. I did this to make the bench
in the image loom more realistic and three dimensional. I also added a
gradient to the background of the mountains to help show light
dispersing through the clouds, I like this because it helps to add more
dimension and interest to the simple image.
What would you improve if you did it again?
If I where to redo this image I would add some more small details such
as screws/fittings. I would do this to add more interest to the image
and make it seem more realistic.

Story Overview
Betty the caterpillar/butterfly wants to be friends with; Lucy the ladybird, Danielle
the dragonfly and Bella the bee. However they say the she cant be friends with
them as she is not as pretty as them. Betty goes off sad and lonely. A few days later
a butterfly, the girls want to be friends with her as she looks beautiful and cool.
When they realise that the butterfly is in fact the caterpillar that they where mean
to they feel bad for what they did and apologise. However Betty doesn’t want to be
their friend as she has found some new friends that liked her for who she was and
not what she looked like.

Audience
The audience that I am targeting my book towards with between the age range of 3
and 5 as I will be using simple terminology and bright colours to help attract them
to the book. I have added a good moral to my story, hopefully to entice that parents
to buy my book in order to help teach their children right from wrong. I have not
aimed my book at any specific gender as I will be using gender neutral colours,
however all of my characters will be female. I have done this because boys seem
more accepting of people to their friendship groups that young girls. The class that
my book is aimed towards is not specific as the moral I have included is relevant to
all people. My book will be targeted mainly to people of the United Kingdom as it
will be written in English, however it will also be suitable for those in other English
speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and USA.
Production Methods
I am panning on mainly using shapes to create the images to go along with my
children's book. I will be using Adobe Photoshop to create my images. I have
decided to uses shapes to create graphics as it gives a cartoony feel to the overall
look and and gives sharp clean edges to the creation, as appose to rotoscoping
which can give a rough edge and take a long time to make affectively. I will be a serif
font for my text to make it easier to read and flow better. I will use bright colours to
represent my characters however they will be very close to the actual colours of the
animals I am creating.

25. What are the strengths of the proposal? What areas of the proposal need further work?
The strengths of the proposal are detailed descriptions, neat and
tidy work layout, allows the viewer to understand the proposal
easily and the outline of the children's book story she is creating.
I also think another strength is well spoken English easy to read
and good vocabulary and punctuation.
Another effective point is that we can see they have good
knowledge of JPEG and a good understanding of what they want
to achieve from making the children's book and they also seem to
be planned ahead and know what they want to create.
The idea of the story is simple but would appeal to children a lot
and would also be a good lesson to teach children and would
make parents want to buy the book for the mto make them realise
they are there own person and they should be happy for however
they look like and to always be themselves.
I think that she could have added a few more
disadvantages and advantages to the JPEG part.

I think the story has a very strong message that
kids will learn from. Targeting a young audience is a
smart move and the use of simple shapes with
cartoon graphics will be very appealing to younger
readers.
The story presented is one that has been told a lot.
Making the main character a caterpillar who
becomes a butterfly is a good way to tackle the
subject matter, but telling the story in a different
way or from a different point of view would be good
see.
What are the strengths of the idea generation? What areas of idea generation could have been
further developed?
I like how different ideas have been developed on
the mind map.
The mood board is very bright and colourful, with
the appropriate use of cartoony images. If they can
be mixed with the more realistic pictures it will
create a really cool art style.
The only aspect that could use some more work is
the amount of detail in the mid map. While the
ideas are good, exploring and thinking about
different directions it could take may lead to a more
original plot.

One strength of the proposal is that it is very
detailed, especially the overview of the storyline.
This is good because it helps to give a good
impression as to what the story is about.
Another strength is that you have gone into quite a
lot of detail about the audience you are targeting
your book at.
One thing that could be improved is that you could
give examples of what you’re going to use the
shape tool on, for example the background, the
characters etc. You could also maybe add a few
more advantages and disadvantages on the JPEG
part of the first slide in your proposal.

further developed?
Your idea generation is very good, as the mood
board is very detailed and it really does give a good
impression as to what the story is about.
Your mind map is also quite good as you have
explored more than one idea for your children’s
book.
Something that could be improved is that you could
maybe add some more detail on your mind map.
For example you could write about the visual style
you are wanting to go for, and the lay out of the
book etc.

I mostly received positive feedback about my proposal and idea generation. Mentioned
a few times was the fact that my story line would appeal to most children and would
give a good message across and help then to learn a life lesson in the appearances are
deceptive and to be kind to everyone. Another thing that I gathered from my feed back
is that I could look more into the exporting format that I am planning to use and find out
more advantages and disadvantage of using JPEG.

I agree that I should do more research in to JPEG files and find out is there is a better
alternative such as PNG.
I also agree that the story I have chosen has a good moral behind it that children should
be thought from a young age as they start to grow up.

I disagree with the fact that my story overview is detailed, however my story is going to
be very simple and it is mainly going to be about the images that tell the story.

One day Bina the ant was scurrying about in search of food. Summer was almost over and autumn was
approaching. Soon it would be winter and food would be difficult to find. Bina knew it was necessary to stock as
much as possible so that her ant colony could have enough to eat during the difficult months ahead.
She had collected quite a bit already. Now she was on the lookout for bits of sweetmeats that younger members
of her colony loved to munch on after their meal. Darting to and fro between trees and shrubs, Bina suddenly
smelt the sweet aroma of pastry. She quickly went around the bush and there she saw it – a large bit of pastry
with a whole raisin in it!
Just then she looked up and saw something hanging from the leaf of a bush. Looking closer, she saw that it was a
tiny tail. It seemed to be all wrapped up in something, as if bandaged.
Bina did not know it, but the ‘thing’ was a chrysalis, the pupa of a butterfly.
“Oh you poor thing,” exclaimed Bina. She had no idea what a chrysalis was. “What a sad fate you have! I can run
anywhere I wish, climb trees or go over mountains. And look at you, you are trapped in your shell. All you can do
is move your tail around a bit.”
But there was no answer from the chrysalis. So Bina went on, “Even ant children can run around and do as much
as we can. They are free, you are all bound up and can’t even move. What a life you must have.” And she walked
away with her piece of pastry.
A few days later, Bina came that way again hoping to find more pastry or biscuit lying around. It was unusually
hot that day and she was sweating. Suddenly, a cloud seemed to come over her and she felt a soft cool breeze.
She looked up. What did she see this time?
Why, one of the most beautiful butterflies she had ever laid eyes on! Light blue spotted with light pink and yellow
dots. How beautiful and how lucky to be able to fly around free, thought Bina, as she stared at the beauty.
“Look at me,” said Sundri the butterfly. “I am your much-pitied friend. You boasted of being able to run around
and climb mountains. But now try to get me to listen.” And with a graceful flap of her wings, Sundari flew away.
Like a soft sigh of the breeze…
