Natural Forms The main theme of this project is Natural Forms, so I decided to use this plant from my kitchen as
the reference for my ‘natural form’. I chose this flower as I really enjoy the colours and the
shapes of the petals. The interesting shapes in the plant will be a cool thing to incorporate into
this project.
Continuous Line Drawings Using the photos I took, and looking at the plants itself, I drew 10
continuous line drawings that I will use throughout this project. I used
different angles of the flower and different weights of pens and pencils.
Stem & Leaves.
In this drawing I focused on the bottom of
the plant. I really like this one as it is more
abstract than the others, and works nicely
as a drawing that isn’t just a flower head.
3 flowers with Full Stems.
With this one, I decided to isolate 3 of the
flowers together and draw them at their
full length. The length could be a cool
thing I could incorporate into my work.
Whole Bunch of Flowers.
In this drawing I decided to use a heavier
pen and draw the bunch as a whole.
Personally this one isn’t my favourite as
its difficult to distinguish the flowers, but it
could still work in my work.
Side and Underneath
I took a single flower for this
drawing and I drew it from an
angle where I was looking up
from the bottom of the flower
head. I like how this one came
out as you can see the shape
of the petals and how pointy
they actually are.
Side View.
Similar to the previous drawing I
focused on a single flower, but I
drew it from the side and not
underneath. This drawing works
for me as, again similar to the last
drawing, you can really see the
petal shapes and it will be a cool
thing to add into my work
throughout this project.
Full Bunch with Full Stems.
With this drawing, I looked at the
full bunch of flowers. I really like
how this one came out. Unlike the
previous full bunch drawing I did,
you can see the individual flowers
and how they work together as a
bunch. This one is definitely one
of my favourites from these
drawings.
Wilted Flowerhead.
On one of the stems I noticed
that there was a small wilted
flower so I decided to do this
drawing of that wilted flower. I
love how this came out as its
quite different to the others,
This one has quite a unique
shape and I think it will be cool
to use this in my work.
View From Top of Flower Head.
In this drawing I decided to take a flower
and draw it from a bird eye view, looking
directly down on to the head. I’m not a
huge fan of how this drawing came out, as
I feel I focused too much on the shape of
the petals and not the composition of how
they are arranged.
3 Flower heads.
With this one, I took 3 flowers and drew the
flower heads from a side angle. This is similar to
one of my first drawings which had the three
flowers with the full stems, just focused on the
actual flowers. I like how this one has come out,
especially the left most flower with the drooping
petals. I believe they work well and could be a
cool thing to add into my work.
Top of Flower Head.
With this drawing, I decided to do another
view of the top of the flower as I wasn’t
too happy with how my first attempt came
out. I used a thicker pen for this drawing
and I focused on the layers and
arrangement of the petals as opposed to
the shape, I think this was more
successful that the previous because of
this.
Digital Development I took some of my continuous line drawings, and scanned them into photoshop to do some
development of the pieces, I added colour and some backgrounds.
For this development, I took a page from a book and
scanned it in and placed the continuous line drawing
on top. I then added some colour to the flower. I
made the colour slightly translucent so you can see
the type through the colour. I enjoy how this has
turned out, I think the colours work together well and
the way the words show through the colour is
effective.
With this piece I put my drawing into photoshop and I
decided to put a graphic twist on it. I decided to add
colour to this piece but with a graphic twist to it. I
added the colour of the petals in a circle pattern not
following the shape of the flower head. I think this
works nicely as it adds an interesting design to the
drawing. It is simple yet it works well.
With this piece, I took the drawing of the stems and I
changed the colour of the lines to be white and then
I added colour in the spaces and applied it with an
airbrush tool which made this really nice texture that
makes a very interesting and abstract piece. The
contrast of the pink and the green works well, and I
am very happy with this outcome, I like this style
Bleach On Fabric With these pieces, I took some pieces of
fabric, Some old black and purple jeans,
and I used bleach on the fabric to create
some cool patterns. As this exercise was
using bleach, I made sure I was in a well
ventilated room and I wore gloves as to
not get bleach on my hands.
For this first sample I took some old black
jean material to create this checkerboard
pattern. I like how this design came out as
the fabric took the bleach very well and
created these very strong contrasting
squares which work well.
With this one I took the
same black jeans as the
checkerboard and I made
some circle patterns with
the bleach. This one
worked okay, in not a huge
fan of how the final
product came out as I feel
I could have gone back
and built up the bleach to
make the circles fully
saturated so they would
stand out more.
In this one, I took the purple jean material and I decided to do
straight lines with the bleach to create this netting crisscross
pattern. The bleach on with this fabric worked amazingly. I
used varying different sizes of brush to apply the bleach and I
used different watered down bleach. With the watered down
bleach and the non watered down bleach I still got similar
results in the final piece but I still got results that I am very
happy with.
In these on the left I used a couple of leaves and coated them in
bleach and used them to stamp onto the fabric. In the top two purple
ones I first stamped the leaf and then I used the left over bleach to
stamp it again and the second time you can see that the veins of the
leaves really show through. On the purple fabric it almost looks like
they're glowing with the way that the bleach took to the fabric. I did
the same technique with the black piece in the middle. The way the
bleach makes the veins really stand out is something I really enjoy.
The piece above is a failed piece. I tried to fold the fabric over and
dip it into the bleach. I thought that it may make a ombre type effect
or create a cool pattern where the folds were, but unfortunately it did
none of these. I did use watered down bleach but I don’t think this is
the reason why it didn’t work. I might have another go and try to
make this work as I feel it could be quite a cool outcome.
With these 3 I developed the bleach by using different
objects as stamps to create different images.
For the first, on the left, I used an old makeup powder
lid to stamp a large circle on the top of the fabric. I
then used a glue stick lid on the inside of the circle to
create a centre piece. To get the little circles round
the outside I used the end of a round pencil. I decided
to make this one into a flower type design to link back
to the natural forms element of this project. I think this
has worked very well. I like how the bleach has
worked on this fabric and the final product is nice to
look at, I like how the centre of the flower hasn’t
developed to be all one colour, instead its patchy and
I think that works nicely with this image.
For the second, top right, I used the same glue stick
that I used in the flower image to stamp it across the
page. Initially, I was thinking about a firework type
design but when the glue stick stamps developed I
realised that they could be like flowers in a field so I
added some stalks to make them more like this. I like
how this one came out as it is quite simple but it is
also quite effective.
With the final, bottom right, I took the powder lid and
used it to create this overlapping circle pattern after
those circles has developed I took the bleach and I
put it in where the circles overlap 3 time. I was going
to put bleach in all the overlapping spaces but I
decided that the 3 times overlap looked better and if
all of the overlaps were done it may ruin the outcome.
In these ones, I took 2 of my continuous
line drawing and I transferred them onto the
fabric with the bleach.
For the one of the left, I used the line
drawing of the one with the wilted flower. I
really like how this came out. I enjoy the
way the the bleach looks on the purple, it
creates almost a glow around the lines. A
way that I could develop from this stage, if I
went in with some thread and stitched
along the lines to create more depth to the
piece, it could also make the glow from the
bleach stand out more, It could make it look
almost like neon sign.
With the piece on the left, I used the
drawing of the stems and leaves. This
creating a really cool abstract looking piece.
I think the final outcome of this one is very
aesthetically pleasing because of this
abstract nature to it. You look at this one
and there are many things that it can be.
Your mind doesn’t go straight to a flower
stem and that’s what I like about this one.
As with the previous one, I believe that a
cool way to develop this would be to stitch
into it. It would make it a cool piece and if
the stitching was slightly offset it would add
to the abstract factor.
Pam Glew
Pam Glew is an artist that specialises in bleach on
fabrics. She uses old vintage flags to create cool
textures within the bleach. With the star flags, the starts
started as a white colour so the bleach took to them
and made a cool effect where the stars are a lighter
shade of colour. Some of the flags she uses has some
patterns on them which show through in the bleach.
These combined with the amazing portraiture of her
work, brings out some really cool patterns and textures
which really makes her pieces that more special.
Heat Transfer Paint
The next process we looked at was using heat transfer paint. These paints work by painting your design on a piece of paper and then putting that
paper over a piece of fabric and applying heat and the design should be transferred onto the fabric. These are some swatches of what the paint
looks like on different materials. The left swatch of all them is the paint on paper, the top of the page being the undiluted colour and the bottom
being a watered down version. In the middle of the swatches is what the paint transfers to valine and on the right is calico
With this I took some paper and ripped it up into stripes. I then
arrange it into this pattern and I transferred it too some valine.
This first print came out okay. I feel like the colours could have been more
intense and that could have been caused by how long I kept it under the
heat. Even though the colour, didn’t come out as bright I don’t think this is a
full “fail”. I do enjoy how the bottom blue triangle and the pink circle
underneath looks like a wizard! This was amusing to me I have to say. I do
like how the purple strip next to it is very strong colour. I just wish the rest of
the colours came put like that purple stripe.
With this one, I added the purple
vertical stripe to break up all the
horizontal lines. I think this was a good
addition to the initial piece as it adds
something in the foreground to look at.
I still think that the colours on this one
could be better and I’m not sure why I
am struggling to get the colours I want.
With this print the paper had been
used before to get the previous print
so possibly the reason the colours
aren’t as vibrant as I would like is
because the stripes had already been
printed. Or maybe it was to do with the
heat, I’m still not too sure. I do like the
design, even though the colours aren’t
quite what I would like, the design is
nice and kind of abstract, and I enjoy
that.
With these 2, I took some paper,
scrunched it up and then painted on
top of it with the heat transfer paint, I
then transferred it as normal to get
these cool patterns.
The one on the left, I put a very small
amount of the paint onto the brush so
the paint wouldn’t fully saturate the
paper. The final result is something
I’m very happy with. The way the
colours came out onto the fabric is
very satisfying to me. The way the
colours are dark around when the
scrunches are is a feature that I am
very happy with within this piece.
On the right I decided to do the
opposite, I put a lot of the paint on so
the whole page would be very
saturated. I was pleasantly surprised
when the final outcome became what
it did. The way the colours are only
really showing up where the creases
are is something that I wasn’t
expecting to happen. I expected that
the whole page would have colour not
just the crease lines. You would have
thought that the outcomes would have
been swapped, the less paint
transferred like the right and the more
paint like the left!
For this stage, I painted one of my flowers onto the paper, I used the drawing of a single flower with a slightly wilted bud as it has some nice brown colours on the end of the petals which
I attempted to add to the painting. After I painted it I transferred it onto valine, and then onto calico. I wasn’t too happy with how the the first print on the calico came out so I added some
more paint to it and left the heat source on the calico for slightly longer. After doing this, I got an outcome that I was happy with (the one on the right). I am happy with how the final piece
came out as I managed to get the colours to work well after struggling with the colour before. I do still think I could do it again and get stronger colours on the calico, like how I have
achieved on the valine. When it comes to the heat transfer paint, it works much better on the valine than the calico, but I believe there is a way that you can get the paint to work with
calico.
For this one I used my drawing of the flower from underneath for this painting. With this one, similar to the last, I struggled with getting the colours to work well on the calico. I’m not too
sure what it is exactly that I am doing wrong or if I’m not doing something I should be, but it’s always the calico that I struggle with. I did manage to get a better, more vibrant transfer the
second time I did it but its still not as vibrant as I would have ideally liked. With this one I also decided to add a yellow background to add something extra to the piece, and I think that
adding this worked very well. On the paper the background looks like it would transfer with some patches darker than others, but in the final outcomes the background looks pretty solid
and all one colour. This did surprise me but overall I am happy with the way these turned out, even though some of the colours aren’t as strong and vibrant as I thought they would be
initially.
Trace Monotype
Trace monotype is a type of monoprinting. Trace monotype is where you ink up a monoprint plate as you would when doing a regular
monoprint, you then place your paper or fabric over the inked plate and you would draw your picture or design onto the paper or fabric.
Once you have finished drawing the design you would remove your media and your picture will be printed onto the back of the paper.
These are some samples to show
how different pressures effect the
outcome of the print.
When more pressure is applied
the line with come out darker and
when less pressure is applied the
lighter the mark will come out.
This also applies to when your
are shading during monoprinting.
The more pressure you put when
shading the darker the print and
with lighter, the print will also be
lighter.
These samples also show how
you can achieve both really thin
marks and you can also achieve
quite thick marks. This relies on
what object you are using to
make the lines. For example, you
could use a biro pen and create
really small lines or you could use
a graphite stick and create more
thick lines.
With this first monoprint, I used a petal
shape to create a kind of curved
pattern. I started in one corner and I
went across to the opposite corner,
using the petal shape the whole way
across. I also decided to add in some
curved petals to break up the pattern a
little bit so its wasn’t all just one shape
the whole way. These shapes also
relate back to my natural form as in
those flowers there were some petals
that were curved at the top. I think that
this was successful for my first print. I
feel I could have added something more
to it to add some more excitement but I
do think it worked well.
In this monoprint, I used the line drawing
that I did of the full bunch of flowers to
create this piece. I took the spikey looking
aspect of the flower heads and made them
even more spikey here. Whisht doing this
one I first did the flower heads with light
pressure and a biro pen, I then went in
again, with the biro and I used more
pressure so when you look at the flowers,
you see there’s an underlying layer that is
ever so slightly lighter. I really like how this
one turned out, because of this subtle
layering.
With this one, I took my stem and leaf
drawing to create this monoprint. With
this one I added some shading to the
stems to make them stand out slightly
more. I could have gone harder with
this shading to make the ink show up
more as it does look quite subtle in
the final outcome, that being said I so
enjoy how this piece came out. There
is one section towards the middle of
the piece where the ink looks slightly
lighter than the rest. I believe in that
place the ink had started to dry ever
so slightly so the strong lines look
slightly faded.
In this monoprint, I used my drawing of a
single flower as inspiration. I used a
graphite stick to make the lines a little bit
thicker than when I uses pencils and biros
for the previous prints. With this one, like
the one above, there was a section of ink
that had started to dry whilst I was making
this print. To fix this I cleaned the plate and
then I re inked the plate and put the print
back down and went over some of the lines.
You can see this if you look by the top of the
stalk and bottom of the flower head. I think
this created quite a cool effect with some of
the petals being darker than the others. I
am very pleased with how this turned out.
This is another mono print I did. I used the line
drawing of the 3 flowers as an inspiration for this one.
I decided to try to make these look like they were 3
trees, hence the darker bit at the bottom of the stems.
I used a graphite stick with this one to create a thicker
line. I also used it to add some shading to the piece.
The shading for me is the part I like least about this
piece, I feel like I could have done it more neatly and
not just as a quick scribble almost. But then again the
shading adds something too it, like its no longer just 3
flowers on a page, its 3 flowers with shading on a
page! I do like how these look more like trees than
flowers It makes them feel bigger and more powerful,
than just 3 flowers in a pot.
With this print, I tried to do the petals using 2 complementary colours, in this case blue and
orange, but it didn’t come out quite how I had envisioned it. This is mainly because the blue
that I used was slighter darker than I had liked, but instead of trying to make the blue lighter
I just carried on thinking I could bring it about. It doesn’t look awful but I personally don’t
think that the orange really saved this. It was a cool concept just the execution wasn’t quite
there. In some petals the colours have blended quite well together but in the majority it
didn’t work. There will be a way for this to work I just couldn’t find it.
In this print I decided to add a yellow background colour and to make the petals a nice pink
ombre colour. I also used a light brown colour as the printing colour and I think all the
colours work well together very nicely. To make the ombre I fist put down the light pink all
over the petal with quite a lot of water so the Brusho was still very wet, then I took a reddy
purple colour and dabbed it onto the inside of the petal, the colour then spread and blended
to create this aesthetically pleasing blend from a darker pink to a lighter. This print worked
reall well and I am really happy with it. It is probably one of my personal favourite outcomes
of this project so far!
To develop my monoprints,
I used Brusho to paint add
some colour into the final
prints.

Heat Transfer Paper Heat transfer paper works in a similar way that the heat transfer paint does.
The transfer process is the exact same, where you place all your pieces on
top of the fabric that you want to transfer them to, making sure the paper is
upside down, then a heat source is places on top, for these I used an iron.
With the iron I had to make sure that I was using it in a safe way, I made sure
that it was in a safe place when I wasn’t using it, never leaving it face down
whilst not in use, as that is one of the quickest ways to burn your whole
house down. I also made sure that when I was using it that I didn’t touch the
iron so I wouldn’t melt my fingers off!
These are samples of the heat transfer paper that I will use for the next
exercise. The square on the left of each of them is the actual paper, in the
middle is valine, and the right side is calico. I didn’t end up using calico for
any of my pieces but I did a sample anyway to show how it would look on the
material. In some of the samples and some of the pieces there are the small
oval shapes, and they are from the iron.
In this one, I think the shapes
work well together and the
colours contrast each other
nicely. I did leave the iron on
this one for a bit too long so it
burnt the fabric a little, but it
doesn’t take much out of the
piece, the only thing really is
the yellow square in the back
is almost hidden by it but
overall a promising start.
I really like this one (and the
one below) because of the star
shape. I made sure I cut the
start out carefully and I kept the
edge piece. I feel this one,
could have been better if I had
used more of a contrasting
colour in the background,
maybe a yellow or red.
I reall like the small red
rectangles in this one. I feel like
they compliment the blue and
the black very nicely and add
that little pop of colour that was
needed to make this piece
standout.
This one was one of the first ones that I did. I really
like the composition in this piece. It could look like
the USS Enterprise if you looked at it long enough.
Even though it was a mistake, I like how the red has
smudged across the fabric, I accidentally did this as
I moved the iron and the red circle came with the
iron.
This one is very simple, just a triangle and a half circle. That being
said, I enjoy its simplicity. The red and the black work well together
and the small ovals from the iron add just a little something to
make it stand out.
In this one, I used the same circle as the top right,
and I used a part of the paper where the circle had
been cut from. I like how the yellow strip is almost
weaved into the red, I think this looks very striking
and works well. With this one like the top left, I left
the iron on for a little too long so it left a small
scold.
With these developments I thought more about the
composition of the piece, in this one I used a semi
circle and some stripes of black to create shape
that looks kind of like a telegraph pole. I really like
the contrast with the green and black, I also think
the iron marks have made a nice looking effect on
the print.
With this one I took some of the paper and I ripped t
to create a cool soft line, which I overlapped with
with some yellow stripes, grey stripes and a grey
circle. I put all of this on top of a yellow box. I like the
contrast with the yellow and the brown, and I think
the stripes of yellow over the top of the brown, works
so well together, those colours together always
remind me of a brownie uniform. I think the shapes
and the composition works well in this piece.
With this one on the left, I took a stripe
of blue and then I weaved together a
purple swirly shape and a yellow
zigzag. I really like how this one came
out, the yellow stands out really nicely
against with the other darker colours. I
really like how this one came out. This
would be nice if I took a longer piece
of valine and created a long piece with
this style.
These 2 on the left, are some things that I
tried to so but they didn’t quite turn out quite
how I wanted. I stacked some paper
together thinking that I could make a
gradient pattern but it didn’t quite work. The
one on the right I put a square down and
then I transferred it and put another square
on top. I’m not happy with the results but,
I’m sure I could get the outcome I wanted if I
tried.
With this piece below I took all the same piece of
paper I used in the bottom left, and rearranged
them into the composition you see below. I used
the stripes to overlap with the brown and the
grey. I think this outcome works well, but I do
prefer the other one. The brown stripe at the
bottom isn’t as intense as it was the second time
it had been transferred. Also with this piece I did
leave the iron on a bit too long so there are
those small burns.
With these, I cut up the papers into stripes to create these stripy outcomes.
For the first, on the left, I took red stripes and I transferred all the different strands individually and then when I covered the whole piece in the red, I
decided to put some black stripes on the top to add something to the piece that makes it stands out.
For the middle one, I started with the yellow and I used the same process as the red, when I covered mostly the whole thing with the yellow, I place red
on top of it and with this one I used the stripes more than once to make the colour to look more like orange instead of red. I like how the colours turned
our and re using the stripes, made a really good orange colour.
With the blue on, on the right, I decided to use the blue and grey colours to create this smaller piece that has nice tonal qualities with all the different
colours of blue. The colours in this little one is my favourite out of all of them.
For these small stamps, I used the my line drawing of he stem and leaves to create this very abstract, blob which created a
cool shape that creates and interesting pattern.
I cut a lot of this shape out in lots of different colours and I placed them down in a way where they slot together. I really like
how this shape turned out, as it is very abstract and when you look at it you don’t see the stem and leaf I based it on. In
the middle one, I turned the shape sideways and it looks like I could be like a person, like a blob man or something similar.
I like how the colours turned out in all of these outcomes. The paper worked really well with this shape and the way that the
shapes fit together works very well to me.
Silk Paper Silk paper, is made from the silk from a caterpillar. It is made by taking the fibres of the silk and layering them and using wallpaper paste to stick the
layers together. It is made by stretching out the silk fibres, they come in a couple of different styles. It can come as thin sheets, and in a cotton candy type
texture. It is made by placing down a piece of organza netting, placing the silk fibres on the top of the organza, placing another piece of organza on top
and then applying the wallpaper paste through the organza until the fibres become transparent. After this has dried slightly it can be painted on, thread
added to it, more layers of silk put on until you are satisfied with your silk paper. Between each layer the wallpaper paste must be applied so everything
will fuse together. When all the layers are complete and the silk paper has been allowed to fully dry, it takes on a paper like texture which can be used to
create 3D models.
These are some of the silk papers that I produced. I focused on the colours from my natural form
pictures as opposed to the shape or of any of my line drawings. I made purple and green pieces as
those are the main colours within my natural form. In the two bottom middle samples, I took some thread
and chopped it up into small pieces and sandwiched them into one of the layers. With the purple one, I
took some dyed silk fibres and added them to a layer which added this mice pop of colour which the
thread complements nicely. Another way I used thread is in the bottom right example. I added thread in
a layer but horizontally to add some lines to the piece. In the top left and bottom left, I painted a full layer
to be purple and green to make a couple of solid colour samples. For the middle left piece, I painted one
side green and on the other I added some silk in a kind of vein like pattern. I then painted over these in
purple which created this patter that could be compared to the roots of the plant. With the top right piece
I created a mainly white piece and I only added a couple of small pieces of the pink silk. I really like all of
the pieces that I have created with this process and I can see some ways where I can develop these
further. I could do a 3D type development or stich into these to create my line drawings in the paper.
Lino Printing For the lino printing I made a couple of lino plates inspired by 2 of my line drawings. I then painted some pieces of calico and then I printed the lino
on to the calico.
For this first one, I decided to go for a blue look. I
printed the lino in a pattern that slightly offsets
each print. This pattern work quite nicely in a large
scale. This is what I was going for with all of these
different patterns, I wanted to not just put the print
in the middle and leave it like that. I like the way
this plate turned out, and I think the colours look
nice together. The light blue and the dark blue
compliment each other well and and the little bits
in the middle of the petals where the lino plate is
peaking through, works nicely and makes the print
look more like a sketch which I like about it.
With this one I started with a green back ground,
and I used a red lino ink, with another plate,
where I used the spikey look of the flower and I
decided to leave a circle around the flower head,
which makes the piece look almost like a firework.
I then did a similar pattern to the last one but for
this one I turned some of the print the other way
to add something different to the piece. I used red
on the green to use a complementary colour for
this and I feel like it worked very well. There are a
couple of prints that could have done with more
ink, but overall this piece worked well and I like it.
With this one I used both of the plates I made. I
painted the calico in yellow used the same dark
blue as the first one to print on top of the colour.
I really like how the colours work in this one. This
one is probably my favourite out of all of them
because of the colours. The contrast of the light
and the dark is something that I find very
aesthetically pleasing and both of the printing
plates work really well with this darker colour.
Screen Printing
With these I did some screen prints to create these outcomes. A screen print is where you take the fabric and place a screen over it.
These screens have very fine netting, which let the ink through. On the fabric you place a piece of paper with some cut outs which will
block the colour so only the ink only gets to the parts where there are holes. To ink the fabric, you put the ink on the screen just on top of
the fabric and you use a squeegee to drag the ink down the fabric to saturate the full piece.
With this one I started with inking up the background. I went in with a blue without any
paper so I could let the ink go all over the fabric. I then took a piece of paper and I
drew a spikey flower design based off of my natural form. I drew 3, with 2 facing one
way and the middle one facing down. I then used a scalpel and I cut out the flowers
and kept those cut outs which I could use in another print. I then made sure that the
blue was dried and I placed the paper over the top of the blue and I then secured it
with masking tape and then printed pink over the top of it. I really like how the colours
came out, the contrast of the pink and the blue is something that I really enjoy and I
feel like I could use this process in the future to make some cool outcomes.
For this one I started by inking the whole background purple. I then used the cut out
flowers, that I used in the previous print, as a colour blocker. I also added a piece of
paper across one side of the whole piece (where the blue is). I then inked the green
onto the piece, which made this nice looking green section. I then placed the paper
with a straight edge over the green bit and I placed the flower heads on the other side
and printed the blue over it. I’m really not too happy with how this turned out. I feel like
I had an idea and I couldn’t make it work in the time that we had. I feel like the colours
aren’t a big a contrast for it have actually worked. If I tried different colours I will
probably be able to create an outcome I would be happy with.

Textiles Sketchbook

  • 1. Media And Materials: Textiles Molly Wood Access to HE Art and Design
  • 2. Natural Forms The main theme of this project is Natural Forms, so I decided to use this plant from my kitchen as the reference for my ‘natural form’. I chose this flower as I really enjoy the colours and the shapes of the petals. The interesting shapes in the plant will be a cool thing to incorporate into this project.
  • 3. Continuous Line Drawings Using the photos I took, and looking at the plants itself, I drew 10 continuous line drawings that I will use throughout this project. I used different angles of the flower and different weights of pens and pencils. Stem & Leaves. In this drawing I focused on the bottom of the plant. I really like this one as it is more abstract than the others, and works nicely as a drawing that isn’t just a flower head. 3 flowers with Full Stems. With this one, I decided to isolate 3 of the flowers together and draw them at their full length. The length could be a cool thing I could incorporate into my work. Whole Bunch of Flowers. In this drawing I decided to use a heavier pen and draw the bunch as a whole. Personally this one isn’t my favourite as its difficult to distinguish the flowers, but it could still work in my work.
  • 4. Side and Underneath I took a single flower for this drawing and I drew it from an angle where I was looking up from the bottom of the flower head. I like how this one came out as you can see the shape of the petals and how pointy they actually are. Side View. Similar to the previous drawing I focused on a single flower, but I drew it from the side and not underneath. This drawing works for me as, again similar to the last drawing, you can really see the petal shapes and it will be a cool thing to add into my work throughout this project. Full Bunch with Full Stems. With this drawing, I looked at the full bunch of flowers. I really like how this one came out. Unlike the previous full bunch drawing I did, you can see the individual flowers and how they work together as a bunch. This one is definitely one of my favourites from these drawings. Wilted Flowerhead. On one of the stems I noticed that there was a small wilted flower so I decided to do this drawing of that wilted flower. I love how this came out as its quite different to the others, This one has quite a unique shape and I think it will be cool to use this in my work.
  • 5. View From Top of Flower Head. In this drawing I decided to take a flower and draw it from a bird eye view, looking directly down on to the head. I’m not a huge fan of how this drawing came out, as I feel I focused too much on the shape of the petals and not the composition of how they are arranged. 3 Flower heads. With this one, I took 3 flowers and drew the flower heads from a side angle. This is similar to one of my first drawings which had the three flowers with the full stems, just focused on the actual flowers. I like how this one has come out, especially the left most flower with the drooping petals. I believe they work well and could be a cool thing to add into my work. Top of Flower Head. With this drawing, I decided to do another view of the top of the flower as I wasn’t too happy with how my first attempt came out. I used a thicker pen for this drawing and I focused on the layers and arrangement of the petals as opposed to the shape, I think this was more successful that the previous because of this.
  • 6. Digital Development I took some of my continuous line drawings, and scanned them into photoshop to do some development of the pieces, I added colour and some backgrounds. For this development, I took a page from a book and scanned it in and placed the continuous line drawing on top. I then added some colour to the flower. I made the colour slightly translucent so you can see the type through the colour. I enjoy how this has turned out, I think the colours work together well and the way the words show through the colour is effective. With this piece I put my drawing into photoshop and I decided to put a graphic twist on it. I decided to add colour to this piece but with a graphic twist to it. I added the colour of the petals in a circle pattern not following the shape of the flower head. I think this works nicely as it adds an interesting design to the drawing. It is simple yet it works well. With this piece, I took the drawing of the stems and I changed the colour of the lines to be white and then I added colour in the spaces and applied it with an airbrush tool which made this really nice texture that makes a very interesting and abstract piece. The contrast of the pink and the green works well, and I am very happy with this outcome, I like this style
  • 7. Bleach On Fabric With these pieces, I took some pieces of fabric, Some old black and purple jeans, and I used bleach on the fabric to create some cool patterns. As this exercise was using bleach, I made sure I was in a well ventilated room and I wore gloves as to not get bleach on my hands. For this first sample I took some old black jean material to create this checkerboard pattern. I like how this design came out as the fabric took the bleach very well and created these very strong contrasting squares which work well. With this one I took the same black jeans as the checkerboard and I made some circle patterns with the bleach. This one worked okay, in not a huge fan of how the final product came out as I feel I could have gone back and built up the bleach to make the circles fully saturated so they would stand out more. In this one, I took the purple jean material and I decided to do straight lines with the bleach to create this netting crisscross pattern. The bleach on with this fabric worked amazingly. I used varying different sizes of brush to apply the bleach and I used different watered down bleach. With the watered down bleach and the non watered down bleach I still got similar results in the final piece but I still got results that I am very happy with.
  • 8. In these on the left I used a couple of leaves and coated them in bleach and used them to stamp onto the fabric. In the top two purple ones I first stamped the leaf and then I used the left over bleach to stamp it again and the second time you can see that the veins of the leaves really show through. On the purple fabric it almost looks like they're glowing with the way that the bleach took to the fabric. I did the same technique with the black piece in the middle. The way the bleach makes the veins really stand out is something I really enjoy. The piece above is a failed piece. I tried to fold the fabric over and dip it into the bleach. I thought that it may make a ombre type effect or create a cool pattern where the folds were, but unfortunately it did none of these. I did use watered down bleach but I don’t think this is the reason why it didn’t work. I might have another go and try to make this work as I feel it could be quite a cool outcome.
  • 9. With these 3 I developed the bleach by using different objects as stamps to create different images. For the first, on the left, I used an old makeup powder lid to stamp a large circle on the top of the fabric. I then used a glue stick lid on the inside of the circle to create a centre piece. To get the little circles round the outside I used the end of a round pencil. I decided to make this one into a flower type design to link back to the natural forms element of this project. I think this has worked very well. I like how the bleach has worked on this fabric and the final product is nice to look at, I like how the centre of the flower hasn’t developed to be all one colour, instead its patchy and I think that works nicely with this image. For the second, top right, I used the same glue stick that I used in the flower image to stamp it across the page. Initially, I was thinking about a firework type design but when the glue stick stamps developed I realised that they could be like flowers in a field so I added some stalks to make them more like this. I like how this one came out as it is quite simple but it is also quite effective. With the final, bottom right, I took the powder lid and used it to create this overlapping circle pattern after those circles has developed I took the bleach and I put it in where the circles overlap 3 time. I was going to put bleach in all the overlapping spaces but I decided that the 3 times overlap looked better and if all of the overlaps were done it may ruin the outcome.
  • 10. In these ones, I took 2 of my continuous line drawing and I transferred them onto the fabric with the bleach. For the one of the left, I used the line drawing of the one with the wilted flower. I really like how this came out. I enjoy the way the the bleach looks on the purple, it creates almost a glow around the lines. A way that I could develop from this stage, if I went in with some thread and stitched along the lines to create more depth to the piece, it could also make the glow from the bleach stand out more, It could make it look almost like neon sign. With the piece on the left, I used the drawing of the stems and leaves. This creating a really cool abstract looking piece. I think the final outcome of this one is very aesthetically pleasing because of this abstract nature to it. You look at this one and there are many things that it can be. Your mind doesn’t go straight to a flower stem and that’s what I like about this one. As with the previous one, I believe that a cool way to develop this would be to stitch into it. It would make it a cool piece and if the stitching was slightly offset it would add to the abstract factor.
  • 11. Pam Glew Pam Glew is an artist that specialises in bleach on fabrics. She uses old vintage flags to create cool textures within the bleach. With the star flags, the starts started as a white colour so the bleach took to them and made a cool effect where the stars are a lighter shade of colour. Some of the flags she uses has some patterns on them which show through in the bleach. These combined with the amazing portraiture of her work, brings out some really cool patterns and textures which really makes her pieces that more special.
  • 12. Heat Transfer Paint The next process we looked at was using heat transfer paint. These paints work by painting your design on a piece of paper and then putting that paper over a piece of fabric and applying heat and the design should be transferred onto the fabric. These are some swatches of what the paint looks like on different materials. The left swatch of all them is the paint on paper, the top of the page being the undiluted colour and the bottom being a watered down version. In the middle of the swatches is what the paint transfers to valine and on the right is calico
  • 13. With this I took some paper and ripped it up into stripes. I then arrange it into this pattern and I transferred it too some valine. This first print came out okay. I feel like the colours could have been more intense and that could have been caused by how long I kept it under the heat. Even though the colour, didn’t come out as bright I don’t think this is a full “fail”. I do enjoy how the bottom blue triangle and the pink circle underneath looks like a wizard! This was amusing to me I have to say. I do like how the purple strip next to it is very strong colour. I just wish the rest of the colours came put like that purple stripe. With this one, I added the purple vertical stripe to break up all the horizontal lines. I think this was a good addition to the initial piece as it adds something in the foreground to look at. I still think that the colours on this one could be better and I’m not sure why I am struggling to get the colours I want. With this print the paper had been used before to get the previous print so possibly the reason the colours aren’t as vibrant as I would like is because the stripes had already been printed. Or maybe it was to do with the heat, I’m still not too sure. I do like the design, even though the colours aren’t quite what I would like, the design is nice and kind of abstract, and I enjoy that.
  • 14. With these 2, I took some paper, scrunched it up and then painted on top of it with the heat transfer paint, I then transferred it as normal to get these cool patterns. The one on the left, I put a very small amount of the paint onto the brush so the paint wouldn’t fully saturate the paper. The final result is something I’m very happy with. The way the colours came out onto the fabric is very satisfying to me. The way the colours are dark around when the scrunches are is a feature that I am very happy with within this piece. On the right I decided to do the opposite, I put a lot of the paint on so the whole page would be very saturated. I was pleasantly surprised when the final outcome became what it did. The way the colours are only really showing up where the creases are is something that I wasn’t expecting to happen. I expected that the whole page would have colour not just the crease lines. You would have thought that the outcomes would have been swapped, the less paint transferred like the right and the more paint like the left!
  • 15. For this stage, I painted one of my flowers onto the paper, I used the drawing of a single flower with a slightly wilted bud as it has some nice brown colours on the end of the petals which I attempted to add to the painting. After I painted it I transferred it onto valine, and then onto calico. I wasn’t too happy with how the the first print on the calico came out so I added some more paint to it and left the heat source on the calico for slightly longer. After doing this, I got an outcome that I was happy with (the one on the right). I am happy with how the final piece came out as I managed to get the colours to work well after struggling with the colour before. I do still think I could do it again and get stronger colours on the calico, like how I have achieved on the valine. When it comes to the heat transfer paint, it works much better on the valine than the calico, but I believe there is a way that you can get the paint to work with calico.
  • 16. For this one I used my drawing of the flower from underneath for this painting. With this one, similar to the last, I struggled with getting the colours to work well on the calico. I’m not too sure what it is exactly that I am doing wrong or if I’m not doing something I should be, but it’s always the calico that I struggle with. I did manage to get a better, more vibrant transfer the second time I did it but its still not as vibrant as I would have ideally liked. With this one I also decided to add a yellow background to add something extra to the piece, and I think that adding this worked very well. On the paper the background looks like it would transfer with some patches darker than others, but in the final outcomes the background looks pretty solid and all one colour. This did surprise me but overall I am happy with the way these turned out, even though some of the colours aren’t as strong and vibrant as I thought they would be initially.
  • 17. Trace Monotype Trace monotype is a type of monoprinting. Trace monotype is where you ink up a monoprint plate as you would when doing a regular monoprint, you then place your paper or fabric over the inked plate and you would draw your picture or design onto the paper or fabric. Once you have finished drawing the design you would remove your media and your picture will be printed onto the back of the paper. These are some samples to show how different pressures effect the outcome of the print. When more pressure is applied the line with come out darker and when less pressure is applied the lighter the mark will come out. This also applies to when your are shading during monoprinting. The more pressure you put when shading the darker the print and with lighter, the print will also be lighter. These samples also show how you can achieve both really thin marks and you can also achieve quite thick marks. This relies on what object you are using to make the lines. For example, you could use a biro pen and create really small lines or you could use a graphite stick and create more thick lines.
  • 18. With this first monoprint, I used a petal shape to create a kind of curved pattern. I started in one corner and I went across to the opposite corner, using the petal shape the whole way across. I also decided to add in some curved petals to break up the pattern a little bit so its wasn’t all just one shape the whole way. These shapes also relate back to my natural form as in those flowers there were some petals that were curved at the top. I think that this was successful for my first print. I feel I could have added something more to it to add some more excitement but I do think it worked well. In this monoprint, I used the line drawing that I did of the full bunch of flowers to create this piece. I took the spikey looking aspect of the flower heads and made them even more spikey here. Whisht doing this one I first did the flower heads with light pressure and a biro pen, I then went in again, with the biro and I used more pressure so when you look at the flowers, you see there’s an underlying layer that is ever so slightly lighter. I really like how this one turned out, because of this subtle layering. With this one, I took my stem and leaf drawing to create this monoprint. With this one I added some shading to the stems to make them stand out slightly more. I could have gone harder with this shading to make the ink show up more as it does look quite subtle in the final outcome, that being said I so enjoy how this piece came out. There is one section towards the middle of the piece where the ink looks slightly lighter than the rest. I believe in that place the ink had started to dry ever so slightly so the strong lines look slightly faded. In this monoprint, I used my drawing of a single flower as inspiration. I used a graphite stick to make the lines a little bit thicker than when I uses pencils and biros for the previous prints. With this one, like the one above, there was a section of ink that had started to dry whilst I was making this print. To fix this I cleaned the plate and then I re inked the plate and put the print back down and went over some of the lines. You can see this if you look by the top of the stalk and bottom of the flower head. I think this created quite a cool effect with some of the petals being darker than the others. I am very pleased with how this turned out.
  • 19. This is another mono print I did. I used the line drawing of the 3 flowers as an inspiration for this one. I decided to try to make these look like they were 3 trees, hence the darker bit at the bottom of the stems. I used a graphite stick with this one to create a thicker line. I also used it to add some shading to the piece. The shading for me is the part I like least about this piece, I feel like I could have done it more neatly and not just as a quick scribble almost. But then again the shading adds something too it, like its no longer just 3 flowers on a page, its 3 flowers with shading on a page! I do like how these look more like trees than flowers It makes them feel bigger and more powerful, than just 3 flowers in a pot.
  • 20. With this print, I tried to do the petals using 2 complementary colours, in this case blue and orange, but it didn’t come out quite how I had envisioned it. This is mainly because the blue that I used was slighter darker than I had liked, but instead of trying to make the blue lighter I just carried on thinking I could bring it about. It doesn’t look awful but I personally don’t think that the orange really saved this. It was a cool concept just the execution wasn’t quite there. In some petals the colours have blended quite well together but in the majority it didn’t work. There will be a way for this to work I just couldn’t find it. In this print I decided to add a yellow background colour and to make the petals a nice pink ombre colour. I also used a light brown colour as the printing colour and I think all the colours work well together very nicely. To make the ombre I fist put down the light pink all over the petal with quite a lot of water so the Brusho was still very wet, then I took a reddy purple colour and dabbed it onto the inside of the petal, the colour then spread and blended to create this aesthetically pleasing blend from a darker pink to a lighter. This print worked reall well and I am really happy with it. It is probably one of my personal favourite outcomes of this project so far! To develop my monoprints, I used Brusho to paint add some colour into the final prints.

  • 22. Heat Transfer Paper Heat transfer paper works in a similar way that the heat transfer paint does. The transfer process is the exact same, where you place all your pieces on top of the fabric that you want to transfer them to, making sure the paper is upside down, then a heat source is places on top, for these I used an iron. With the iron I had to make sure that I was using it in a safe way, I made sure that it was in a safe place when I wasn’t using it, never leaving it face down whilst not in use, as that is one of the quickest ways to burn your whole house down. I also made sure that when I was using it that I didn’t touch the iron so I wouldn’t melt my fingers off! These are samples of the heat transfer paper that I will use for the next exercise. The square on the left of each of them is the actual paper, in the middle is valine, and the right side is calico. I didn’t end up using calico for any of my pieces but I did a sample anyway to show how it would look on the material. In some of the samples and some of the pieces there are the small oval shapes, and they are from the iron.
  • 23. In this one, I think the shapes work well together and the colours contrast each other nicely. I did leave the iron on this one for a bit too long so it burnt the fabric a little, but it doesn’t take much out of the piece, the only thing really is the yellow square in the back is almost hidden by it but overall a promising start. I really like this one (and the one below) because of the star shape. I made sure I cut the start out carefully and I kept the edge piece. I feel this one, could have been better if I had used more of a contrasting colour in the background, maybe a yellow or red. I reall like the small red rectangles in this one. I feel like they compliment the blue and the black very nicely and add that little pop of colour that was needed to make this piece standout. This one was one of the first ones that I did. I really like the composition in this piece. It could look like the USS Enterprise if you looked at it long enough. Even though it was a mistake, I like how the red has smudged across the fabric, I accidentally did this as I moved the iron and the red circle came with the iron. This one is very simple, just a triangle and a half circle. That being said, I enjoy its simplicity. The red and the black work well together and the small ovals from the iron add just a little something to make it stand out. In this one, I used the same circle as the top right, and I used a part of the paper where the circle had been cut from. I like how the yellow strip is almost weaved into the red, I think this looks very striking and works well. With this one like the top left, I left the iron on for a little too long so it left a small scold.
  • 24. With these developments I thought more about the composition of the piece, in this one I used a semi circle and some stripes of black to create shape that looks kind of like a telegraph pole. I really like the contrast with the green and black, I also think the iron marks have made a nice looking effect on the print. With this one I took some of the paper and I ripped t to create a cool soft line, which I overlapped with with some yellow stripes, grey stripes and a grey circle. I put all of this on top of a yellow box. I like the contrast with the yellow and the brown, and I think the stripes of yellow over the top of the brown, works so well together, those colours together always remind me of a brownie uniform. I think the shapes and the composition works well in this piece. With this one on the left, I took a stripe of blue and then I weaved together a purple swirly shape and a yellow zigzag. I really like how this one came out, the yellow stands out really nicely against with the other darker colours. I really like how this one came out. This would be nice if I took a longer piece of valine and created a long piece with this style. These 2 on the left, are some things that I tried to so but they didn’t quite turn out quite how I wanted. I stacked some paper together thinking that I could make a gradient pattern but it didn’t quite work. The one on the right I put a square down and then I transferred it and put another square on top. I’m not happy with the results but, I’m sure I could get the outcome I wanted if I tried. With this piece below I took all the same piece of paper I used in the bottom left, and rearranged them into the composition you see below. I used the stripes to overlap with the brown and the grey. I think this outcome works well, but I do prefer the other one. The brown stripe at the bottom isn’t as intense as it was the second time it had been transferred. Also with this piece I did leave the iron on a bit too long so there are those small burns.
  • 25. With these, I cut up the papers into stripes to create these stripy outcomes. For the first, on the left, I took red stripes and I transferred all the different strands individually and then when I covered the whole piece in the red, I decided to put some black stripes on the top to add something to the piece that makes it stands out. For the middle one, I started with the yellow and I used the same process as the red, when I covered mostly the whole thing with the yellow, I place red on top of it and with this one I used the stripes more than once to make the colour to look more like orange instead of red. I like how the colours turned our and re using the stripes, made a really good orange colour. With the blue on, on the right, I decided to use the blue and grey colours to create this smaller piece that has nice tonal qualities with all the different colours of blue. The colours in this little one is my favourite out of all of them.
  • 26. For these small stamps, I used the my line drawing of he stem and leaves to create this very abstract, blob which created a cool shape that creates and interesting pattern. I cut a lot of this shape out in lots of different colours and I placed them down in a way where they slot together. I really like how this shape turned out, as it is very abstract and when you look at it you don’t see the stem and leaf I based it on. In the middle one, I turned the shape sideways and it looks like I could be like a person, like a blob man or something similar. I like how the colours turned out in all of these outcomes. The paper worked really well with this shape and the way that the shapes fit together works very well to me.
  • 27. Silk Paper Silk paper, is made from the silk from a caterpillar. It is made by taking the fibres of the silk and layering them and using wallpaper paste to stick the layers together. It is made by stretching out the silk fibres, they come in a couple of different styles. It can come as thin sheets, and in a cotton candy type texture. It is made by placing down a piece of organza netting, placing the silk fibres on the top of the organza, placing another piece of organza on top and then applying the wallpaper paste through the organza until the fibres become transparent. After this has dried slightly it can be painted on, thread added to it, more layers of silk put on until you are satisfied with your silk paper. Between each layer the wallpaper paste must be applied so everything will fuse together. When all the layers are complete and the silk paper has been allowed to fully dry, it takes on a paper like texture which can be used to create 3D models. These are some of the silk papers that I produced. I focused on the colours from my natural form pictures as opposed to the shape or of any of my line drawings. I made purple and green pieces as those are the main colours within my natural form. In the two bottom middle samples, I took some thread and chopped it up into small pieces and sandwiched them into one of the layers. With the purple one, I took some dyed silk fibres and added them to a layer which added this mice pop of colour which the thread complements nicely. Another way I used thread is in the bottom right example. I added thread in a layer but horizontally to add some lines to the piece. In the top left and bottom left, I painted a full layer to be purple and green to make a couple of solid colour samples. For the middle left piece, I painted one side green and on the other I added some silk in a kind of vein like pattern. I then painted over these in purple which created this patter that could be compared to the roots of the plant. With the top right piece I created a mainly white piece and I only added a couple of small pieces of the pink silk. I really like all of the pieces that I have created with this process and I can see some ways where I can develop these further. I could do a 3D type development or stich into these to create my line drawings in the paper.
  • 28. Lino Printing For the lino printing I made a couple of lino plates inspired by 2 of my line drawings. I then painted some pieces of calico and then I printed the lino on to the calico. For this first one, I decided to go for a blue look. I printed the lino in a pattern that slightly offsets each print. This pattern work quite nicely in a large scale. This is what I was going for with all of these different patterns, I wanted to not just put the print in the middle and leave it like that. I like the way this plate turned out, and I think the colours look nice together. The light blue and the dark blue compliment each other well and and the little bits in the middle of the petals where the lino plate is peaking through, works nicely and makes the print look more like a sketch which I like about it. With this one I started with a green back ground, and I used a red lino ink, with another plate, where I used the spikey look of the flower and I decided to leave a circle around the flower head, which makes the piece look almost like a firework. I then did a similar pattern to the last one but for this one I turned some of the print the other way to add something different to the piece. I used red on the green to use a complementary colour for this and I feel like it worked very well. There are a couple of prints that could have done with more ink, but overall this piece worked well and I like it. With this one I used both of the plates I made. I painted the calico in yellow used the same dark blue as the first one to print on top of the colour. I really like how the colours work in this one. This one is probably my favourite out of all of them because of the colours. The contrast of the light and the dark is something that I find very aesthetically pleasing and both of the printing plates work really well with this darker colour.
  • 29. Screen Printing With these I did some screen prints to create these outcomes. A screen print is where you take the fabric and place a screen over it. These screens have very fine netting, which let the ink through. On the fabric you place a piece of paper with some cut outs which will block the colour so only the ink only gets to the parts where there are holes. To ink the fabric, you put the ink on the screen just on top of the fabric and you use a squeegee to drag the ink down the fabric to saturate the full piece. With this one I started with inking up the background. I went in with a blue without any paper so I could let the ink go all over the fabric. I then took a piece of paper and I drew a spikey flower design based off of my natural form. I drew 3, with 2 facing one way and the middle one facing down. I then used a scalpel and I cut out the flowers and kept those cut outs which I could use in another print. I then made sure that the blue was dried and I placed the paper over the top of the blue and I then secured it with masking tape and then printed pink over the top of it. I really like how the colours came out, the contrast of the pink and the blue is something that I really enjoy and I feel like I could use this process in the future to make some cool outcomes. For this one I started by inking the whole background purple. I then used the cut out flowers, that I used in the previous print, as a colour blocker. I also added a piece of paper across one side of the whole piece (where the blue is). I then inked the green onto the piece, which made this nice looking green section. I then placed the paper with a straight edge over the green bit and I placed the flower heads on the other side and printed the blue over it. I’m really not too happy with how this turned out. I feel like I had an idea and I couldn’t make it work in the time that we had. I feel like the colours aren’t a big a contrast for it have actually worked. If I tried different colours I will probably be able to create an outcome I would be happy with.
