Paradise Lost Short Story Analysis
In Paradise Lost, author Terry Hekker contrasts her new life, as a housewife, with what she had
experienced 30 years earlier. In this article, Hekker depicts her personal experience of being a full
time working mother and how much it hurt when when she was divorced after 40 elongated years of
marriage. It was mortifying for her to cope with the loneliness she felt after their divorce and,
unfortunately she was forced to reestablish herself back from scratch. Defending her point, Terry
admits her sorrow/frustration stating, I wasn t advocating that mothers forgo careers to stay home with
their children; I was simply defending my choice as a valid one.¨ (Hecker 38, p5) Hekker has a strong
opinion on the matter of being a housewife Unlike Satisfactions of Housewifery and Motherhood ,
where Hekker stated how she enjoyed her role as a stay at home mom, Paradise Lost is written
differently to advise mothers/current housewives to have a backup plan and a strong education base
behind their occupation of Housewifery. By alluding to her past (The Satisfactions of Housewifery
and Motherhood) and through the use of her degrading and defensive language, Hekker advises
women and other housewives to be prepared for anything to happen to themselves in a marriage.
Hekker s enthusiasm on the topic of Housewifery shifted completely as her life took a dramatic shift;
on her 40th wedding anniversary her husband filed for divorce. She writes, so i was predictably
stunned and

Triangle Theory Of Love
Triangle theory
Robert J. Sternberg, psychologist and Sciences proposed a triangular theory of love that suggests that
there are three components of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Different combinations of
these three components result in different types of love. For example, a mixture of intimacy and
commitment results in compassionate love, while a mixture of passion and intimacy leads to
passionate love. Sternberg often said, relationships built on two or more elements are more enduring
than those based upon a single component. Sternberg uses the term consummate love to describe a
combination of intimacy, passion, and commitment. While this type of love is the strongest and most
enduring, Sternberg suggests that this type of love is rare. He wrote that even as a teenager he was
intrigued by the mystery of why some relationships succeed while others fail. This is why early in his
academic career he developed an explanation, which he calls the triangular theory of love. His theory
is based on the observation that love consists of three components intimacy, passion, and commitment.
Different combinations and strengths of those three ingredients, Sternberg says, produce different
kinds of love.
Intimacy is the feelings in a relationship that promote closeness, bonding, and connecting with one
another. Passion is what drives the romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation in a loving
relationship. Commitment consists of two parts. The first is a

Don River Watershed Essay
As one of the watersheds in TRCA jurisdiction, the Don River watershed is over 80% developed and
has a very high rainfall runoff response. There are three high risk flood vulnerable areas in this
watershed; the Hoggs Hollow, Lower Don, and the Yonge and Elgin Mills area. A hydrological model
has been established for Don River watershed and has been updated in 2004. After that, 12 years of
meteorological and stream flow data has been collected and a number of significant storm events have
occurred. Another hydrology update is deemed necessary to utilize the new datasets and to confirm the
design requirement for a number of key projects.
The hydrology update for the Don River watershed will follow the standard procedure for
hydrological modelling including modelling platform selection, watershed delineation, model
parameterization, model calibration and validation, and model simulation (scenario evaluation). The
main objectives of this model update are as follows:
Evaluation and selection a hydrology modelling platform that will best serve the TRCA and the Don

The Rise and Fall of George McClellan Essay
George B. McClellan is famous in history because of his involvement with the civil war. He was a
powerful general who was hired, and fired by Abraham Lincoln. George was born on December 3rd in
1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born the son of a prominent surgeon, and a caring
mother. He was also the grandson of the Revolutionary War General, Samuel McClellan. He married
the daughter of a powerful Pennsylvania family. They had 5 children, two girls and three boys. When
George McClellan attended the University of Pennsylvania at age 13 in 1840, he was studying law.
Two years later he changed direction, and decided to go into the military. He asked his father to write

He graduated from his class in 1846, only coming in second due to poor drawing skills. He was
commissioned as a Brevet Second Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers. McClellan s first
military action was in the Mexican American war. He frequently complained that he was too late to
join in on the American victory. While in Mexico, he received many medals and awards for his
services as a brave engineer. He received much experience on the battlefield and it helped his military
performance. After the war, he performed peacetime service, training young cadets at West Point,
working on the construction of a fort, and surveying land for the Transcontinental Railroad. While
George was living in Ohio, he became quite popular. The Civil War had started and there was a need
for a powerful Union general. George was asked by Governors of his state and surrounding states to
become the general of volunteer Soldiers. The general in his home state of Ohio was the most
persuasive out of the three states that approached him. It was for Ohio that he agreed to serve. He won
some small battles near Ohio, which brought national attention upon him. The North had about
everything the South had, but bigger and better. Everything but one thing; Generals. The North was
lacking some good Generals to lead the war, and with all of George s success, Lincoln approached him
and asked him if he would like to be in the Civil War. Of

Auntie Mame Irreverent Escapade
Based on the best selling novel Auntie Mame: An Irreverent Escapade by Edward Everett Tanner III,
turned to a popular Broadway musical, Auntie Mame finally graced hopeful audiences in theaters
during the late fifties (Krebs). Directed by Morton DaCosta, whose previous experiences consisted of
several other Broadway hits as of The Music Man and No Time for Sergeants, the claimed musical
film of Auntie Mame was in fact no musical due to its lack of any melodic scenes (Shepard). Relating
more to a mixture of comedy, drama, and romance genres, Auntie Mame was a sensation for its time,
winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and Motion Picture ( Auntie Mame Awards ). Auntie

Appealing to an older audience, the movie often gives bolstering sections of humor that may draw
attention from children audience members, however, several puns can be lost on the audience if they
are ignorant of the subject. Compensating for the misguided audience members, the actors themselves
provide for entertaining and striking performances. Emotional and seemingly genuine personalities
produced by the actors embody the characters which causes connection with the audience. Yet another
fine feature of Auntie Mame is the movie s settings. Just as unique and colorful as Auntie Mame
herself, the settings accurately depict a wide array of places and provides subtle details which could
give the audience a longing to re watch the movie. Despite the comical aspects, excellent
performances, and distinct settings, the movie isn t flawless. Due to Auntie Mame s age, modern
audiences may dislike the hazy video quality that the movie possesses. Otherwise than the poor
picture qualities, the movie s graphic effects are also inferior to today s films. In scenes of dangerous
actions an observant audience may be able to locate the use of stunt doubles which detracts from the
audiences experience. However, with numerous superb characteristics the movie has, audiences are
likely to overlook these measly deficient

Friendship In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha
Friends for life can be hard to find, but with a good reason. Hermann Hesse addresses friendship in his
his book, Siddhartha. The protagonist in its book, Siddhartha, has trouble finding himself when he is
not happy with his life. To find himself, he goes on a journey in hopes of learning how to be happy
and be himself again. Many times though, Siddhartha finds himself reuniting with his friends he met
upon the way and learning more about himself each time. Specifically, Siddhartha learns from
Govinda and Kamala.
Siddhartha had relied quite a bit on his friendship with Govinda. If it wasn t for him along the way, he
would have ended up killing himself or unable to find any meaning to his life as well as happiness.

Kamala as well he had held dear, even to the point of bearing his child. Although, it took Siddhartha a
moment to recognize him. Kamala had to bring him up, asking Did you recognize him too? He is your
son. If Kamala had gotten bored of Siddhartha years ago, she wouldn t have had a child with him.
Instead though, she did find interest in him, even once stating he the best lover she ever had.
Siddhartha let himself lose his worries within such actions with her, but if he hadn t, he could have
found himself never finding happiness. Having a son helped him have another focus. Siddhartha also
found comfort in Kamala though, stating that You are like me, you are different from other people.
With the Samanas, Siddhartha had realized all life is connected and shares a soul. However, he felt lost
and saw that Kamala had felt so too. Everyone else seemed to be able to enjoy themselves, be content.
They couldn t however, wanting to know and experience more than they should normally. The main
way that the two are the same is that Kamala shared his unhappy nature: Weariness was written on
Kamala s beautiful face, weariness from continuing along a path which had no joyous goal. Both her
and Siddhartha had been spending decades trying to find a purpose or happiness in their life. All they
knew at first were fake pleasures of being high standard, looked up to and expected to be a role model.

In Room Of One s Own By Virginia Wolf
Milton gives an expanded story of the Devil and his purpose and how he came about. The most
intriguing part of this story is when he tempts humans into eating from the tree of knowledge. This
part is important because of the impact that; this one event has had on our lives whether you believe in
it or not. In the bible this event is what ultimately lays out gender roles and the responsibilities of men
and women to one another. For the sin that Eve has committed and also influenced Adam to do: in
Genesis 3 verse 16, God says to Eve, Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you .

The Devil was angry at God. He wanted to be at the same level as him but that was not possible and so
therefore he defied God and ultimately he was expelled from the heavens. Once the Devil saw that
God had created new creatures, creatures that resembled God, since they were made in the image and
likeness of God, he decided that he would tempt the creatures, he would corrupt them as well. In order
to do this the Devil would have to approach Adam and Eve, through observing them he chose that he
would temp Eve, at her sigh Milton writes this as the Devil s thoughts Abashed the devil stood And

of her child like behavior he decided he will tempt, her he believes she will be weaker. However, he is

Ivory Artifacts of The Israelietes
Imagine in your minds eye you are back in time during age of Israelites. Now imagine yourself
walking the halls of palace. As you walk you see what seems to be a small fortune of art decorating
the halls. You eventually stop walk and you find yourself in the throne room and right before you see a
chair but, not just not any chair the most elegant chair you have ever see with your own two eyes. This
chair glistens with jewels and some sort of white material you are not familiar with. The white
material seems almost alien in nature and yet it is beautiful and makes the thrones seem as if from
another world. That white on that throne would be ivory. Ivory items are peculiar items when one

Now think that other countries are trying to win your favor to help them battle neighboring countries
for land. So they try and win your favor with gifts, and there is no better gift back in the time of
pharoses and king than Ivory. Ivory back in those times symbolized many things but the most
important on was wealth so as a result everyone wanted it. So you have your scribe write down who
give you the best piece of ivory or any other type of material good. In the end whom ever has given
you the best gifts has won your favor as result you go out and help them conquer their enemy. Their
enemy may have tried to buy your favor as well, but since their gift was not as good as your new ally s
gift they dictated their own fate. Kings would have written records of these times of war and bribery
so they could in the end know who they should support. As a result this is textual evidence that we can
tell where ivories could have come from. Now the reason the style of the piece by which I mean the
motifs on the pieces give away where the ivory is from is because what a motif is. A motif essentially
means the themes of the work and message that the artists are trying to convey. Generally motifs of
work are indigenous to areas where the artists are from for example. You are not going to see on

Why Apollo Has Changed Modern Day History
Apollo is also known as Phoebus , a well respected individual is the know god of many things. To
begin with, the god of music, as he plays a golden lyre(harp). The god plagues and of healing as he
gives the science of medicine to man. Secondly, the god of light, as he carry s the sun. Finally, the god
of truth and oracles as the patron who gave wisdom in Delphi.
Apollo had a very important task, which was to acquire his four horse chariot and drag the sun across
the sky each and every day. Furthermore a few of his famous attributes were his muscular physique,
handsome face, and his impressive locks of golden hair, only possible with his very own herbal
shampoo. Resting above his hair was a wreath made of a Laurel tree, and lastly was known to be an
archer and had a beautiful silver bow. In this report of the Greek god Apollo you will discover the
significant importance of how Apollo has changed modern day history as well as the Roman gods time
period.
Background
Apollon, Latin for Apollo, has quite a wide speard array of material to cover. To begin with let s start
with his birth, Apollo was the son of Leto, god of the Titanesses and Zeus, the god of gods (royal
parentage). He was born on the island of Delos off the coast of Palestine. He and his older twin sister
Artemis, also an Olympian, shared an aptitude for archery. His forename, Phoebus, means bright or

The 11 Principles Of Quality
Quality. Such a simple word with a multitude of meanings. I must admit, prior to this course, I was
rather naïve about what quality entailed. I definitely did not have a concrete definition of what quality
was or stood for. It simply seemed as though quality was something that worked most of the time.
After the studies from this course I have a much better grasp of how to define quality and what exactly
quality means in various areas of life and business. For instance, the 11 Baldrige Principles of Quality
are an easily used metric for defining the quality of an organization. Previously, I never would have
used these 11 principles to define an organization as quality. Now, I find it hard not to view an
organization in relation to the 11 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thankfully, the Baldrige principles changed my perspective on quality. As such, I now use a few of
the principles to grade an organization. The main principles I find myself grading an organization with
are visionary leadership, customer centered excellence, valuing workforce members and partners and
societal responsibility. All eleven of the principles are important. However, these tend to be the most
important to me when defining the quality of an organization.
For instance, I now purchase many products from the Newman s Own brand based on the principles I
have mentioned. They have a strong sense of societal responsibility and ensure 100% of profits to
charity is an underlying theme in all they do (Newman s Own, n.d.). This drew me towards them as a
company, then I noticed how much they value their employees and how their core values tend to line
up with the 11 Baldrige principles (Newman s Own, n.d.). After looking into this company and seeing
how they operate, I decided to purchase as many products as I could from them and ensure other
people were aware of their mission. This is something that would never have been in my realm of
possibilities prior to this course. This is not to say I was unaware of being socially responsible prior to
this course. It is simply highlighting how my thought pattern has been modified since learning about
these specific 11 Baldrige Principles of Quality. After having such an epiphany about quality and how

Descartes Substance Dualism Essay
Introduction
Descartes is an early proponents of substance dualism, the view that there are two substances, an
immaterial mind and a material body. One common objection raised against his view is the mind body
problem which raises the question of how the two different substances can possibly causally interact
on substance dualism. In this essay, I will put forth two of Descartes replies to the problem and argue
that they are successful. I will then consider one objection based on the law of conservation of energy
and give a reply.
Mind body Problem
For a substance dualist, the immaterial mind and the material body are two very different substances.
Descartes thought he had a clear and distinct idea of himself as a mind, a thinking substance ... Show

Descartes replies Gassendi as such: At no place do you produce objections to my arguments; you
merely put forward doubts that you think follow from my conclusions, though in fact they merely
arise from your desire to call in the imagination to examine matters which are not within its proper
province. Thus when you try to compare the intermingling of mind and body with the intermingling of
two bodies, it is enough for me to reply that we should not set up any comparison between such
things, because they are quite different in kind.
His reply points out that (1) cannot be proven. Those who affirm (1) do so mistakenly because they
are thinking about physical causation and applying such a concept of causation to the mind and body
which is another domain. To use an example, suppose someone watched a billiard ball hit another ball
which causes it to roll away. He then concludes that causation only works when two objects come into
physical contact with one another visibly. Hence he rejects concepts such as gravity and magnetism.
Obviously this is a categorical mistake to expect them to work in the same way. Likewise, anyone who
holds to (1) must show that mind body causation cannot work without appealing to physical causation,
since the mind is not physical in the first

Phillis Wheatley Analysis
Anne Bradstreet once wrote, If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not
sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome. This quote summarizes much of
what her and fellow female writer Phillis Wheatley s lives were like during their fights for social
change. Throughout their lives, these women were forced to live through challenges and injustices on
levels that are unimaginable to many of members of today s society. With the Bradstreet and Wheatley

Scientists have spent decades figuring out what is causing global warming. They have looked at the
natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. But the amount and pattern of warming
that is been measured can t be explained by these factors alone. The only way to explain the pattern is
to include the effect of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by humans. One of the first things scientists
learned is that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a
variety of ways. Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity
production. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other
contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive
systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial
processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2. Desertification could be described
as the spread of a desert environment into arid or semiarid regions, caused by climatic changes, human
influence, or both. (Cline 2007) Climatic factors include periods of temporary but severe drought and
long term climatic changes toward dryness. Human factors include artificial climatic alteration, as
through the removal of vegetation (which can lead to unnaturally high erosion), excessive

Industrial Advantage And Disadvantage Of Dc Motor
Introduction D.C Motor is used for variable speed operation because in dc motor torque and flux that
can be control independently and that is achieved by armature and field current control respectively.
D.C motor has many advantages delivering high starting torque, ease of control and non linear
performance. But due to certain disadvantage of dc machine such as mechanical commutator and
brush holder required time to time maintenance [1] .So cost of the drive system is increases. But now
D.C Motor is less used in industrial applications. Because of low cost, better performance and the
requirement of maintenance is less as compared to D.C Motor it make the asynchronous motor
advantageous in many industrial applications. SCIM are most widely used than all the rest of the
electric motor as they have all the advantages of A.C Motors and are cheaper in cost as compared to
slip ring induction motor. Because of absence of slip rings, brush maintenance duration and cost
associated with the wear and tear of brush are minimized. Because of these advantages, the induction
motor is used in element of most of the electrical drive system for all the conditions like starting,
braking, change in speed and speed reversal. To achieve the maximum efficiency of the induction
motor drive, so many techniques are developed in the last few years. Now a day s high switching
frequency converters are used for changing the frequency, phase and amplitude of the input to an A.C.

containing a rafter, the backup mast, the 14m long back stay and the linking inner forestay. The top of
the mast is 12m overhead the new rooftop level and 37m overhead ground level. It is formed with

How Bladensburg Is A Small Town Within Prince George s...
Bladensburg is a small town within Prince George s County, Maryland. Though only 1.1 miles in size ,
Bladensburg is able to boast a rich history due to its placement along the Anacostia River and its
proximity to Washington D.C. The name of Bladensburg comes from Thomas Bladen a resident of
Prince Georges County and Maryland s provincial governor from1742 to1747. Bladen was the first
provincial governor of Maryland to be born in Maryland, but the land that made up the town before
1742 had a different name. It was called Beall town after Ninian Beall, a Scottish immigrant who
bought the land after he finished his time as an indentured servant. Beall s land was known as Black

However, the court insisted taverns would not affect the value of their property and allowed others to

It is known that, the town depended on agriculture although the size of the farms that supported this

Health Issues Of Ill Health
It is important that patterns of ill health are monitored as the Department of Health need to know
where to target the funds, and need to know what areas they need to target. For example, if the levels
of obesity are rising then the Department of Health needs to target this by putting in weight
maintenance courses and referring patients to clinics or recommending operations if they are beyond
helping themselves. Patterns of ill health help the Department of Health to see what areas are
increasing and the reasons for this. The research into why this happens helps them to know how to
tackle the problem.
Statistics
Statistics are used to monitor and recognise the patterns of ill health throughout the UK. Once
statistics are collected they are published on the National Statistics website. It is important to monitor
patterns of ill health and recognise where there is a dramatic increase or increase as then the health
and social funding can be spent in areas which need more help. For example, if there is a rising
problem with obesity, then funds can be spent to help those who are unable to control their weight,
more services will be able to be provided to those who are obese. Illnesses such as obesity are on the
rise but also illnesses associated with smoking, drinking and drugs are also, funding is targeted at
providing help for those who suffer from these illnesses.

Lab Exercise At Room Temperature Equal
Introduction:
Many of molecular biology and chemistry involves working with very small volumes. A micropipette
is standard laboratory equipment used to measure and dispense a specific volume of liquid (#5
buffalostate.edu). This is a very helpful tool that we need to master and able to use in a biochemistry
lab. The purpose of this lab exercise is learning how to use a micropipette to find the density of
different liquids, and be able to identify an unknown liquid using density. Also, learn how to evaluate
the experimental accuracy, precise, and error of small volumes used in biochemistry based on the
theory that 1gram of water at room temperature equal 1millimeter (#1 Bruice). If the density of water

Based on the theoretical density, the density of water, methanol, and glycerol that obtained in the
experiment should be the same or close to these values above. If the experiment performs correctly
with high precise and accuracy, then density of the unknown can be used to identify the present
chemical substance. The expect outcome for this experiment is the value you obtained will be close or
exact the theoretical values. In this exercise, all of the micropipettes measured in the form of a
microliter. There are different models of micropipettes have different minimum and maximum limits.
The two micropipettes we were used for this experiment are P1000 and P100. The correct
micropipettes were chose based on the volume of the liquid that needs to be measure. Micropipettes
should never go past the set limits, either lower or higher. It will cause the micropipettes to not
function correctly or will measure incorrect volumes. The maximum sizes are showed on top of the

Immigrants In Philadelphia In The Seventeenth Century
Irish immigrants began arriving in Philadelphia in the seventeenth century in an effort to escape
poverty, starvation, and English oppression. By the eighteenth century, Philadelphia was a bustling
city growing rapidly in industry and the immigrants had dreams of a better life, free of the repression
they had experienced in Ireland. Pennsylvania seemed an ideal place for the emigrants since, as
McDaniel (2014) notes William Penn envisioned the province to be socially, economically and
religiously diverse where differences of opinion and backgrounds would naturally create a stable and
tolerant society. After surviving the often dangerous voyage from Ireland, the Irish were met with little
hospitality. Many of the colonists considered the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soon the number of emigrants increased so rapidly that jobs and housing became scarce and poverty
ensued. In addition to economic problems, religious differences increased tension. It seemed as if the
troubles in Ireland had traveled across the ocean. Irish Catholics arriving in America were faced with
the most prejudices. They were seen as unskilled, illiterate, immoral troublemakers who were stealing
jobs from other workers. Many were given low paying jobs or unable to gain employment at all due to
discrimination. Poverty led to gang formation, violence and crime. Alcoholism was also a problem as
many emigrants became saloon owners, since bars and whiskey were a big part of their Irish heritage.
As the number of immigrants grew, so did the increase in crime and alcoholism which perpetuated the
Philadelphians feelings of mistrust of the Irish. Philadelphia newspapers that neglected to include
information that was important and of interest to the Irish, were diligent in reporting negative stories
or in degrading Irish immigrants. There were also great misgivings concerning the Irish Catholics.

Bradley Lewis
Jianyi Lu (Ken)
Bradley Lewis s Moving Beyond Prozac, DSM, and the New Psychiatry: the Birth of Post psychiatry,
tried introducing contemporary humanistic theory based on post psychiatry in chapter two. Bradley
tried to explain that the concept of post psychiatry could be supported by discussions through three
philosophical approaches: referential, relational and pragmatic. Bradley described that new psychiatry
pandered to Gross and Levitt s science war and went with the referential theory. The reference theory
approach emphasizes the objective fact itself and does not depend on people s interpretations.
Therefore, in the new psychiatry, diagnosis of a person will be based on whether the person satisfies a
criterion of a certain disease or not. Bradley pointed out that the risk of taking the referential theory
approach in psychiatry might strongly lead to the imposition of doctrine such that there was a truth in
the world. Bradley also introduced the relational theory s flexibility, which was from the connection
not with a fact in the real world but concepts in human s different interpretations or communities. The
relational theory, in psychiatry, led the idea that there was no one truth and allows to have multiple
interpretation as truths. The relational theory took account of humanities and would not label a person

Persuasive Essay On Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson known as the man who broke the color barrier, was both a hero of baseball, and a
hero for the fight against racism. He took two of the things Americans valued most: freedom and
sports, and brought them to the grand stage. When we take what Robinson did and put it in
perspective of when and where it occurred we see the true struggle, and see just how despicable and
bitter this time was. It really highlights how the search for freedom and equality coincided with the
country s fight to hold on to segregation and racism. The retelling of Robinson s story has been retold
many times from the perspective of baseball. Jack Roosevelt Johnson was born on January 31, 1919 in
Cairo Georgia, the youngest of five children during a Spanish flu and smallpox epidemic. When
Jackie was very young his father abandoned the family. Now Jackie s mother Mollie Robinson, had to
find a better life for her family. Due to Jim Crow laws Mollie could not buy a house for her family,
because they were barred from certain neighborhoods for whites only. Despite this fact Mollie didn t
care she persuaded a light skinned black man to act is if he was buying a house in Pasadena,
California. (MSR News) Then the Robinson s moved in, whites were furious and threatened to burn
them out of the house. Mollie ignored the threats and went about her business. This strength and

Explosive Black Powder
Most people do not know that we have tunnels underground, or that tunnels inside of rocks for us to
travel through. We use explosives to blast holes into solid areas we need to go through. Explosives
explode because they are made of materials that burn or break down very quickly, producing a lot of
heat and gas. (Wood, 2014). Usually explosives are made with a material called a detonator, with
another layer over it. A detonator is simply used for exploding a device. The detonator makes a quick
chemical reaction in the material that explodes. A chemical reaction is an action that changes the
energy and structure in the content of chemicals. Without a chemical reaction, the explosives would

Argumentative Essay On Freedom Of Religion
As we have established, freedom of religion is protected by the first amendment. This amendment is
divided between two clauses, the Establishment clause, and the Free exercise clause. While the latter
allows individuals to exercise freely their religious beliefs, the former prevents the government to
impose a federal religion and prevents coercion upon a religious belief. Even though these protections
exist in reality they are easily overcome by compelling government interest . The first amendment
hasn t been very efficient when facing claims of Native Americans, unsurprisingly this is fully in line
with the prior decisions concerning their rights. A problem arises linked with the scope of the freedom
of religion clause. As we know it protects religions, the question is then what is considered as a
religion for it to be protected by the first amendment? As we have said previously, the courts have a
tendency to adopt a Judeo Christian point of view when determining whether a religion is protected by
the first amendment. The question is whether the place given to sacred sites in the Native American
beliefs will rather be understood as a cultural use. Since courts don t protect these lands it seems that
they don t consider it as part of a religious belief, but rather as part of a cultural use, offering monetary
damages instead of protecting it, as in US v Sioux Nation of Indians. A reason that may explain the
position adopted by the courts may be that Indian beliefs seem to

The Revelation Of Jesus Christ
There is always someone who choose to deny the revelation of Jesus Christ. In this investigation, it
will be looked at how Jesus proved himself to the naysayers of his time. This will be accomplished by
looking at several different factors that include topics of was Jesus mentally ill when he claimed to be
God? How did Jesus prove that he was not only talking the talk but he was also walking the walk?
This was done the evidence of the actions he performed. Finally, an evaluation will be done to prove
that when an individual has a revelation of Jesus they are also seeing the image of God.
There could be several explanations to how Jesus considered himself to be God. According to the
article beyond blind faith, Another possibility is that Jesus was sincere but self deceived. We have a
name for a person today who thinks he is God. Mentally disabled. But as we look at the life of Christ,
we see no evidence of the abnormality and imbalance we find in a mentally ill person. Rather, we find
the greatest composure under pressure (Little, 1988).
There was no evidence of Christ being unstable in any way. To the contrary, he was an image of
stability and steadfastness. From one point of view, however, claims don t mean much. Talk is cheap.
Anyone can make claims. There have been others who have claimed to be God. I could claim to be

What are the different kinds of pollution? There are so many different kinds of pollution like; air
pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, thermal pollution, radioactive pollution, noise pollution, and
light pollution, but the most common two we hear about is water pollution, and air pollution those are
the ones we have to figure out how to fix the most because they are causing the most danger and
problems for us. There are a lot of different kinds of pollution, some that most people probably don t

surrounding us, everyone individually should do what they can to reduce their pollution habits. Air
pollution is when harmful chemicals are put into the air. Most of the air pollution in the usa is caused
by the burning of fossil fuels such as; coal, oil, natural gas, and gasoline. Why do we continue to burn
these knowing what it does to the environment? We continue to burn these harmful chemicals because
they bring us electricity and they power our vehicles. To reduce air pollution we can do a few different
kinds of things. We can conserve energy, meaning remember to turn off lights and other devices when
not in use. Use energy efficient light bulbs and other appliances. Limit driving by carpooling, public

Call Of The Wild Conflict Analysis
In the novel Call of the Wild, Buck, the protagonist struggles with the constant duality between his
Love of a Man and his pull towards savagery. The civilization that greeted Buck in the Santa Clara
Valley was one that was based on Southern Hospitality, but the savagery that slowly ripped and
consumed Buck was one of an unforgiving nature, destroying anyone or anything that was unfortunate
enough to see it. One major confliction Buck battles with is his Love of a Man while he is in the
presence of civilization. In the beginning of the novel, while Buck is still on Judge Miller s place,
London states, His father, a huge Saint Bernard, had been the judge s inseparable companion, and
Buck bid fair to follow in the way of his father (12). Buck enjoyed being in the company of the Judge
s family and was comfortable in the ways of civilization. On page 23, the novel states, Francois s whip
snapped less frequently, and Perrault even honored Buck by lifting up his feet and carefully examining
them. When Perrault did this, it made Buck feel that love of a man that he strives for. Later in the
novel, John Thornton saved Buck from his previous owners Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, and took care
of Buck until his wounds healed and he regained his strength. But love that was feverish and burning,
that was adoration, that was madness,it had taken John Thornton to arouse (58). Buck had never

Compare Rocktalker And All Summer In A Day

3). This quote from Rocktalker says that Lucy does believe that she can talk to rocks because she
explains with confidence what the rocks talk about and what she usually hears. This proves that Lucy
believes that she has an ability to talk to rocks. Margot and Lucy are similar in a way because they
both believe in something and that s what their role is throughout the entire story.
Another reason why I think Lucy and Margot are similar are that they both get bullied. In All Summer
In A Day Margot gets bullied by this one boy named William, and in Rocktalker Lucy gets bullied by
Grant. All a joke! said the boy, and seized her roughly. Hey everyone, let s put her in a closet before
teacher comes! (Bradbury p. 157). This quote from All Summer In A Day shows that Margot was
being bullied because they were about to lock her in a closet. At recess, though, Grant, the mean kid in
the class, held up a rock he had found and demanded, Hey, rocktalker! What does this rock say? Lucy
listened, but before she could hear what it had to say, Grant threw the rock away. He had tired of the
game. Sheesh! What a weirdo! he said. (Baum p. 3). This quote from Rocktalker shows that Lucy was
bullied because Grant just called her a weirdo. This shows that Margot and Lucy are similar because
they both get bullied, and they got bullied because they believed in something.

Essay on Navigating Interstitial Spaces
Navigating Interstitial Spaces
[T]he law permits the Americans to do what they please.
Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America
The protection of virtue, I submit, requires an understanding of interstitial spaces spaces where
formalist adherence to rules and laws does not suffice to adequately promote virtue. Recognition of
these spaces spawned agent morality and Aristotle s practical wisdom. Fascination with these spaces
fueled Alexis de Tocqueville s inquiry into American religious, familial and political mores in
Democracy in America. Though America s formal, codified laws of the 1830s granted dangerous
freedom to the individual, Americans managed to navigate interstitial spaces with assiduous virtue.

Given the arguments in my second seminar paper on Socratic citizenship, the comparison between
Plato s Guardians and Aristotle s men of practical wisdom seems to be a reasonable one. Both
Guardians and men of practical wisdom operate relatively freely in a moral system of substantive
justice, with little reference to fixed principles. Plato s discussion of democracy in the Republic and of
obedience in the Crito, however, makes clear that he did not believe regular individuals could operate
virtuously in interstitial spaces between fixed rules and principles. Plato feared a democratic
expansion of liberty which would allow each citizen to pursue a way of life to suit himself, as this
would unleash a torrent of subjectivism and a bastardization of virtue. As such, his ideal Republic
employed absolute rule of the Guardians, noble lies and temperance (read disinterest in political
participation ) to close the interstitial spaces which would allow the clumsy subjectivism of the lower
classes to operate. Emancipated from the rule of the Guardians, the democratic man cannot control his
desires and sows the seeds of tyranny. Plato seems convinced that the democratic expansion of
interstitial spaces could only mean extinguishing virtue.
Pericles Athens provides a compelling counter example to Plato s pessimism about democracy.
Pericles prescribes a mixture of individual

The Columbian Exchange And The Columbian Exchange
In 1492, one of the most important exchanges in our history began. At that time, there was a need for
spices and tradable goods and supplies. There were some people who just wanted a direct route to the
trade supply in Asia, and there were others who wanted wealth or to spread the word of God.
Christopher Columbus believed that the world was in fact round, but he was unaware the actual size of
the planet. He sailed west in search of the East Indies, however he reached the Caribbean Islands of
the Americas instead. By this accidental encounter with the foreign islands and people, Christopher
started the Columbus exchange. The exchange was widespread throughout Europe, Africa and the
Americas around the 15th and 16th centuries. In the trade, many things were introduced to all three
continents. Examples of those things were ideas, people, plants, animals, technology, etc. The
exchange affected the Old World and the New World very differently. Europe had definitely benefited
the most, while others weren t quite so lucky.
Europe had been affected by the Columbian Exchange greatly. They had gained so much from it.
Potatoes, maize (corn), pumpkins, turkey, vanilla, cocoa and many other foods were introduced to
Europe through the exchange. With these new foods, the europeans diets improved tremendously.

Pennsylvania. These sudden attacks came as a shock to the people and government of the USA. The

265 people died on the hijacked planes, 2650 people died from inside the World Trade Centers, 343
firefighters died while trying to save others, and 125 people died at the Pentagon. Days after the twin
towers had collapsed people were still searching for the miracle of hope, that they would once again
find their loved ones alive. Amidst all the panic, it was hard for people to step back and realize that
there was a very slim chance that they would find the person they were looking for. The after effects
of the tragedy involved searching for bodies amongst the rubble of what was left of the World Trade
Center Towers and of the Pentagon. As people witnessed the first and second planes fly into the trade
centers, they saw the buildings shatter to pieces, and watched as people desperate to escape from the
peril jumped out into the streets below. It was hard to put all of these images behind them. These
images affect the way the human mind functions. Humans are a unique species, one that feels sorrow,
pain, and loss. The psychological effects of such trauma will affect people for the rest of their lives.
The effects of 9/11 did lots of damage as it tore the country apart over racism, but it also brought the
people of the United States together. Almost all Americans felt prouder than ever about the country
they lived in. Surveys showcased that patriotic feelings were higher than ever before among all ethnic
groups. People from all over America came down to New York and

Heroes In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
When you think of heroes and villians you think comics. You think Batman and the Joker, Thor and
Loki, or some other pair like them. However, there are heroes and villians everywhere else too; they
are in real life, movies, and other literature like Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is
about two starcrossed lovers that fall in love, get married in secret, and eventually fall to the fate of
death too early in their lives. Juliet is a 13 year old girl who belongs to the family of the Capulets.
Some say she s very sweet and innocent and may put her into the hero category, but others, like
myself, think that she falls into the villian category. She is is a villian because she is very manipulative
and bratty at times, and she can ultimately be to blame for the death of Romeo and others. ... Show

To say to me that thou art out of breath? (2. 6. 31 32.) Juliet often throws the idea of killing herself

  • 2. Paradise Lost Short Story Analysis In Paradise Lost, author Terry Hekker contrasts her new life, as a housewife, with what she had experienced 30 years earlier. In this article, Hekker depicts her personal experience of being a full time working mother and how much it hurt when when she was divorced after 40 elongated years of marriage. It was mortifying for her to cope with the loneliness she felt after their divorce and, unfortunately she was forced to reestablish herself back from scratch. Defending her point, Terry admits her sorrow/frustration stating, I wasn t advocating that mothers forgo careers to stay home with their children; I was simply defending my choice as a valid one.¨ (Hecker 38, p5) Hekker has a strong opinion on the matter of being a housewife Unlike Satisfactions of Housewifery and Motherhood , where Hekker stated how she enjoyed her role as a stay at home mom, Paradise Lost is written differently to advise mothers/current housewives to have a backup plan and a strong education base behind their occupation of Housewifery. By alluding to her past (The Satisfactions of Housewifery and Motherhood) and through the use of her degrading and defensive language, Hekker advises women and other housewives to be prepared for anything to happen to themselves in a marriage. Hekker s enthusiasm on the topic of Housewifery shifted completely as her life took a dramatic shift; on her 40th wedding anniversary her husband filed for divorce. She writes, so i was predictably stunned and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Triangle Theory Of Love Triangle theory Robert J. Sternberg, psychologist and Sciences proposed a triangular theory of love that suggests that there are three components of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Different combinations of these three components result in different types of love. For example, a mixture of intimacy and commitment results in compassionate love, while a mixture of passion and intimacy leads to passionate love. Sternberg often said, relationships built on two or more elements are more enduring than those based upon a single component. Sternberg uses the term consummate love to describe a combination of intimacy, passion, and commitment. While this type of love is the strongest and most enduring, Sternberg suggests that this type of love is rare. He wrote that even as a teenager he was intrigued by the mystery of why some relationships succeed while others fail. This is why early in his academic career he developed an explanation, which he calls the triangular theory of love. His theory is based on the observation that love consists of three components intimacy, passion, and commitment. Different combinations and strengths of those three ingredients, Sternberg says, produce different kinds of love. Intimacy is the feelings in a relationship that promote closeness, bonding, and connecting with one another. Passion is what drives the romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation in a loving relationship. Commitment consists of two parts. The first is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was a powerful general who was hired, and fired by Abraham Lincoln. George was born on December 3rd in 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born the son of a prominent surgeon, and a caring mother. He was also the grandson of the Revolutionary War General, Samuel McClellan. He married the daughter of a powerful Pennsylvania family. They had 5 children, two girls and three boys. He graduated from his class in 1846, only coming in second due to poor drawing skills. He was commissioned as a Brevet Second Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers. McClellan s first military action was in the Mexican American war. He frequently complained that he was too late to join in on the American victory. While in Mexico, he received many medals and awards for his services as a brave engineer. He received much experience on the battlefield and it helped his military performance. After the war, he performed peacetime service, training young cadets at West Point, working on the construction of a fort, and surveying land for the Transcontinental Railroad. While George was living in Ohio, he became quite popular. The Civil War had started and there was a need for a powerful Union general. George was asked by Governors of his state and surrounding states to become the general of volunteer Soldiers. The general in his home state of Ohio was the most persuasive out of the three states that approached him. It was for Ohio that he agreed to serve. He won some small battles near Ohio, which brought national attention upon him. The North had about everything the South had, but bigger and better. Everything but one thing; Generals. The North was lacking some good Generals to lead the war, and with all of George s success, Lincoln approached him and asked him if he would like to be in the Civil War. Of ... Directed by Morton DaCosta, whose previous experiences consisted of several other Broadway hits as of The Music Man and No Time for Sergeants, the claimed musical film of Auntie Mame was in fact no musical due to its lack of any melodic scenes (Shepard). Appealing to an older audience, the movie often gives bolstering sections of humor that may draw attention from children audience members, however, several puns can be lost on the audience if they are ignorant of the subject. Compensating for the misguided audience members, the actors themselves provide for entertaining and striking performances. Emotional and seemingly genuine personalities produced by the actors embody the characters which causes connection with the audience. Yet another fine feature of Auntie Mame is the movie s settings. Just as unique and colorful as Auntie Mame herself, the settings accurately depict a wide array of places and provides subtle details which could give the audience a longing to re watch the movie. Despite the comical aspects, excellent performances, and distinct settings, the movie isn t flawless. Due to Auntie Mame s age, modern audiences may dislike the hazy video quality that the movie possesses. Otherwise than the poor picture qualities, the movie s graphic effects are also inferior to today s films. So you have your scribe write down who give you the best piece of ivory or any other type of material good. I definitely did not have a concrete definition of what quality was or stood for. It simply seemed as though quality was something that worked most of the time. After the studies from this course I have a much better grasp of how to define quality and what exactly quality means in various areas of life and business. For instance, the 11 Baldrige Principles of Quality are an easily used metric for defining the quality of an organization. For instance, I now purchase many products from the Newman s Own brand based on the principles I have mentioned. They have a strong sense of societal responsibility and ensure 100% of profits to charity is an underlying theme in all they do (Newman s Own, n.d.). This drew me towards them as a company, then I noticed how much they value their employees and how their core values tend to line up with the 11 Baldrige principles (Newman s Own, n.d.). After looking into this company and seeing how they operate, I decided to purchase as many products as I could from them and ensure other people were aware of their mission. One common objection raised against his view is the mind body problem which raises the question of how the two different substances can possibly causally interact on substance dualism. In this essay, I will put forth two of Descartes replies to the problem and argue that they are successful. I will then consider one objection based on the law of conservation of energy and give a reply. Descartes replies Gassendi as such: At no place do you produce objections to my arguments; you merely put forward doubts that you think follow from my conclusions, though in fact they merely arise from your desire to call in the imagination to examine matters which are not within its proper province. Thus when you try to compare the intermingling of mind and body with the intermingling of two bodies, it is enough for me to reply that we should not set up any comparison between such things, because they are quite different in kind. His reply points out that (1) cannot be proven. Those who affirm (1) do so mistakenly because they are thinking about physical causation and applying such a concept of causation to the mind and body which is another domain. To use an example, suppose someone watched a billiard ball hit another ball which causes it to roll away. He then concludes that causation only works when two objects come into physical contact with one another visibly. Hence he rejects concepts such as gravity and magnetism. Obviously this is a categorical mistake to expect them to work in the same way. They have looked at the natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. But the amount and pattern of warming that is been measured can t be explained by these factors alone. The only way to explain the pattern is to include the effect of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by humans. One of the first things scientists learned is that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a variety of ways. Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity production. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2. Desertification could be described as the spread of a desert environment into arid or semiarid regions, caused by climatic changes, human influence, or both. Bradley tried to explain that the concept of post psychiatry could be supported by discussions through three philosophical approaches: referential, relational and pragmatic. Bradley described that new psychiatry pandered to Gross and Levitt s science war and went with the referential theory. The reference theory approach emphasizes the objective fact itself and does not depend on people s interpretations. Therefore, in the new psychiatry, diagnosis of a person will be based on whether the person satisfies a criterion of a certain disease or not. Bradley pointed out that the risk of taking the referential theory approach in psychiatry might strongly lead to the imposition of doctrine such that there was a truth in the world. Bradley also introduced the relational theory s flexibility, which was from the connection not with a fact in the real world but concepts in human s different interpretations or communities. I smile each time I pass the pictures and reminisce on the special moments and people in them. In my house you have a chance to see the cats zoom by if you get in the front door fast enough. Or you might have to chase after the dogs if you don t shut the outside glass door correctly. Or maybe you are lucky enough to get there when mom is working in the kitchen. From what I have been told by friends and family that is the best time to walk in, and I agree. But no matter the time you walk into my special place it s always a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Explosive Black Powder Most people do not know that we have tunnels underground, or that tunnels inside of rocks for us to travel through. We use explosives to blast holes into solid areas we need to go through. Explosives explode because they are made of materials that burn or break down very quickly, producing a lot of heat and gas. (Wood, 2014). Usually explosives are made with a material called a detonator, with another layer over it. A detonator is simply used for exploding a device. The detonator makes a quick chemical reaction in the material that explodes. A chemical reaction is an action that changes the energy and structure in the content of chemicals. Without a chemical reaction, the explosives would not explode. There are many chemical reactions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. Argumentative Essay On Freedom Of Religion As we have established, freedom of religion is protected by the first amendment. This amendment is divided between two clauses, the Establishment clause, and the Free exercise clause. While the latter allows individuals to exercise freely their religious beliefs, the former prevents the government to impose a federal religion and prevents coercion upon a religious belief. Even though these protections exist in reality they are easily overcome by compelling government interest . The first amendment hasn t been very efficient when facing claims of Native Americans, unsurprisingly this is fully in line with the prior decisions concerning their rights. A problem arises linked with the scope of the freedom of religion clause. As we know it protects religions, the question is then what is considered as a religion for it to be protected by the first amendment? As we have said previously, the courts have a tendency to adopt a Judeo Christian point of view when determining whether a religion is protected by the first amendment. The question is whether the place given to sacred sites in the Native American beliefs will rather be understood as a cultural use. Since courts don t protect these lands it seems that they don t consider it as part of a religious belief, but rather as part of a cultural use, offering monetary damages instead of protecting it, as in US v Sioux Nation of Indians. A reason that may explain the position adopted by the courts may be that Indian beliefs seem to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Revelation Of Jesus Christ There is always someone who choose to deny the revelation of Jesus Christ. In this investigation, it will be looked at how Jesus proved himself to the naysayers of his time. This will be accomplished by looking at several different factors that include topics of was Jesus mentally ill when he claimed to be God? How did Jesus prove that he was not only talking the talk but he was also walking the walk? This was done the evidence of the actions he performed. Finally, an evaluation will be done to prove that when an individual has a revelation of Jesus they are also seeing the image of God. There could be several explanations to how Jesus considered himself to be God. According to the article beyond blind faith, Another possibility is that Jesus was sincere but self deceived. We have a name for a person today who thinks he is God. Mentally disabled. But as we look at the life of Christ, we see no evidence of the abnormality and imbalance we find in a mentally ill person. Rather, we find the greatest composure under pressure (Little, 1988). There was no evidence of Christ being unstable in any way. To the contrary, he was an image of stability and steadfastness. From one point of view, however, claims don t mean much. Talk is cheap. Anyone can make claims. There have been others who have claimed to be God. I could claim to be God, and you could claim to be God, but the question all of us must answer is, What credentials do we bring to substantiate our claim? In my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Call Of The Wild Conflict Analysis In the novel Call of the Wild, Buck, the protagonist struggles with the constant duality between his Love of a Man and his pull towards savagery. The civilization that greeted Buck in the Santa Clara Valley was one that was based on Southern Hospitality, but the savagery that slowly ripped and consumed Buck was one of an unforgiving nature, destroying anyone or anything that was unfortunate enough to see it. One major confliction Buck battles with is his Love of a Man while he is in the presence of civilization. In the beginning of the novel, while Buck is still on Judge Miller s place, London states, His father, a huge Saint Bernard, had been the judge s inseparable companion, and Buck bid fair to follow in the way of his father (12). Buck enjoyed being in the company of the Judge s family and was comfortable in the ways of civilization. On page 23, the novel states, Francois s whip snapped less frequently, and Perrault even honored Buck by lifting up his feet and carefully examining them. When Perrault did this, it made Buck feel that love of a man that he strives for. Later in the novel, John Thornton saved Buck from his previous owners Hal, Charles, and Mercedes, and took care of Buck until his wounds healed and he regained his strength. But love that was feverish and burning, that was adoration, that was madness,it had taken John Thornton to arouse (58). • 38. Compare Rocktalker And All Summer In A Day The two stories that I am comparing are Rocktalker by Stuart Baum and All Summer In A Day by Ray Bradbury. Rocktalker by Stuart Baum is about a girl named Lucy who talks to rocks. When she told her classmates, they didn t believe her and she got bullied for a while. As she got older, she became interested in an archeologist. She visited a college to hear his speech she listened to a rock which was able to tell her the answer to a question the archeologist had. Later on, when she became an adult, she decided to move to a volcano, so she would make sure it wouldn t erupt. This quote from Rocktalker says that Lucy does believe that she can talk to rocks because she explains with confidence what the rocks talk about and what she usually hears. This proves that Lucy believes that she has an ability to talk to rocks. Margot and Lucy are similar in a way because they both believe in something and that s what their role is throughout the entire story. Another reason why I think Lucy and Margot are similar are that they both get bullied. In All Summer In A Day Margot gets bullied by this one boy named William, and in Rocktalker Lucy gets bullied by Grant. All a joke! said the boy, and seized her roughly. Hey everyone, let s put her in a closet before teacher comes! (Bradbury p. 157). This quote from All Summer In A Day shows that Margot was being bullied because they were about to lock her in a closet. At recess, though, Grant, the mean kid in the class, held up a rock he had found and demanded, Hey, rocktalker! What does this rock say? Lucy listened, but before she could hear what it had to say, Grant threw the rock away. He had tired of the game. Sheesh! What a weirdo! he said. (Baum p. 3). This quote from Rocktalker shows that Lucy was bullied because Grant just called her a weirdo. This shows that Margot and Lucy are similar because they both get bullied, and they got bullied because they believed in something. My final reason why I think Lucy and Margot are ... • 39. Essay on Navigating Interstitial Spaces Navigating Interstitial Spaces [T]he law permits the Americans to do what they please. Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America The protection of virtue, I submit, requires an understanding of interstitial spaces spaces where formalist adherence to rules and laws does not suffice to adequately promote virtue. Recognition of these spaces spawned agent morality and Aristotle s practical wisdom. Fascination with these spaces fueled Alexis de Tocqueville s inquiry into American religious, familial and political mores in Democracy in America. Though America s formal, codified laws of the 1830s granted dangerous freedom to the individual, Americans managed to navigate interstitial spaces with assiduous virtue. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given the arguments in my second seminar paper on Socratic citizenship, the comparison between Plato s Guardians and Aristotle s men of practical wisdom seems to be a reasonable one. Both Guardians and men of practical wisdom operate relatively freely in a moral system of substantive justice, with little reference to fixed principles. Plato s discussion of democracy in the Republic and of obedience in the Crito, however, makes clear that he did not believe regular individuals could operate virtuously in interstitial spaces between fixed rules and principles. Plato feared a democratic expansion of liberty which would allow each citizen to pursue a way of life to suit himself, as this would unleash a torrent of subjectivism and a bastardization of virtue. As such, his ideal Republic employed absolute rule of the Guardians, noble lies and temperance (read disinterest in political participation ) to close the interstitial spaces which would allow the clumsy subjectivism of the lower classes to operate. Emancipated from the rule of the Guardians, the democratic man cannot control his desires and sows the seeds of tyranny. Plato seems convinced that the democratic expansion of interstitial spaces could only mean extinguishing virtue. Pericles Athens provides a compelling counter example to Plato s pessimism about democracy. Pericles prescribes a mixture of individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Columbian Exchange And The Columbian Exchange In 1492, one of the most important exchanges in our history began. At that time, there was a need for spices and tradable goods and supplies. There were some people who just wanted a direct route to the trade supply in Asia, and there were others who wanted wealth or to spread the word of God. Christopher Columbus believed that the world was in fact round, but he was unaware the actual size of the planet. He sailed west in search of the East Indies, however he reached the Caribbean Islands of the Americas instead. By this accidental encounter with the foreign islands and people, Christopher started the Columbus exchange. The exchange was widespread throughout Europe, Africa and the Americas around the 15th and 16th centuries. In the trade, many things were introduced to all three continents. Examples of those things were ideas, people, plants, animals, technology, etc. The exchange affected the Old World and the New World very differently. Europe had definitely benefited the most, while others weren t quite so lucky. Europe had been affected by the Columbian Exchange greatly. They had gained so much from it. Potatoes, maize (corn), pumpkins, turkey, vanilla, cocoa and many other foods were introduced to Europe through the exchange. With these new foods, the europeans diets improved tremendously. Their better diets helped make them healthier than before which ultimately increased their lifespan and caused less infant deaths. Not only did their lifespans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Days after the twin towers had collapsed people were still searching for the miracle of hope, that they would once again find their loved ones alive. Amidst all the panic, it was hard for people to step back and realize that there was a very slim chance that they would find the person they were looking for. The after effects of the tragedy involved searching for bodies amongst the rubble of what was left of the World Trade Center Towers and of the Pentagon. As people witnessed the first and second planes fly into the trade centers, they saw the buildings shatter to pieces, and watched as people desperate to escape from the peril jumped out into the streets below. It was hard to put all of these images behind them. These images affect the way the human mind functions. Humans are a unique species, one that feels sorrow, pain, and loss. The psychological effects of such trauma will affect people for the rest of their lives. The effects of 9/11 did lots of damage as it tore the country apart over racism, but it also brought the people of the United States together.
