Mayflower Book Summary
Mayflower: A story of Courage, Community, and War is the book I read Written by Nathaniel
Philbrick. The book speaks about two events the first half of the book speaks about the mayflower
voyage about what happened during the voyage, as well as it talks about how the puritans settled in
the Plymouth colony. While the other half of the book talks about the arguments and conflicts, they
had the pilgrims with the Indian and how that led to the war known as the King Philip s War. The
pilgrims left England to search for religious freedom. The book describes what happened in the first
fifty years of the pilgrims life living in the New World. As the pilgrims were living in the New world

Herman Melville s Life
Herman Melville lived a very adventurous life before starting his writing career, and his youth was a
very interesting start to his adventures which would later be adapted into his books along with
fictitious ideas molded in. Born on August 1 of 1819 to Allen and Maria Melville, Herman soon came
down with the scarlet fever sometime in the mid 1820 s which permanently damaged his vision. His
family lived a fairly luxurious life from Herman s father being a highly successful merchant, although
he was borrowing large amounts of money to fund his business which later led to near financial ruin
when he died in 1832. The business was picked up by Allan s oldest son, and Herman worked as a
bank clerk to help with his family s debt. During the 1830 s,

What Is The Theme Of Lady Lazarus
Opening Sentences... Widely considered her most celebrated book of poems, the posthumous Ariel
exposes Plath s twisted physiological torment. Perhaps its most well known work, Lady Lazarus
unambiguously examines suicide and death. It cloaks its reader in the solitude that weighs so heavily
on its author. In this poem, Plath alludes to Lazarus, a man who Jesus resurrects from the dead. Plath
is in fact the female foil to this biblical figure, and through the chaos and loneliness her husband,
father, and friends cultivate, they ultimately drive her to suicide. However, despite her attempts, the
poet unfailingly rises from her deathbed to confront an increasingly harsher world. Similar to Plath,
singer songwriter Joni Mitchell introduces themes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In doing so, she describes what she feels might be the catalyst to the pair s true happiness: wrecked
stockings, knitted sweaters, and shampooed hair. Though simple, they could make her feel alive, alive.
The free willing and bubbly nature of the song ends with the recognition that the greed is the
unraveling...and it undoes all the joy that could be. Despite her endeavors and a fictitious blissful
relationship, the two are designed to fail together as evidenced by Mitchell s question do you
see...how you hurt me baby and her subsequent realization that I hurt you too/Then we both get so
blue. Moreover, Mitchell heightens the unstable affair with her assertion, oh I hate you some, I hate
you some, I love you some/Oh I love you when I forget about me. However, these epiphanies do not
absolve her love. Mitchell s self awareness is essential to understanding her particular predicament.
While some are ignorant to the fact that they are captive in an abusive or harmful relationship,
whether physical or psychological, Mitchell is acutely conscious in her own. Yet, she is incapable of
evading it; moreover, in order to thrive within it, she must neglect own needs, and accordingly
reciprocate that harm. While fantasy does not deceive the reckless women, this volatile relationship
draws her in as part of her continues to believe that her wants are possible, that the two could
eventually feel free

Essay about Accounting Software Installation Project
The Accounting Software Installation Project (from Larson, E.E., and Gray, C.F., 2011 Project
Management the managerial process, fifth edition p441) Sitting in her office, Karin Chung is
reviewing the past four months of the large corporate accounting software installation project she has
been managing. Everything seemed so well planned before the project started. Each company division
had a task force that provided input into the proposed installation along with potential problems. All
the different divisions had been trained and briefed on exactly how their division would interface and
use the forthcoming accounting software. All six contractors, which included one of the Big Five
consulting companies, assisted in developing the work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While concerned, Karin considered these problems typical of the kind she had encountered on other
smaller software projects. Case FOUR MONTHS LATER The project seemed to be falling apart.
What happened to the positive attitude fostered at the team building workshop? One contractor wrote
a formal letter complaining that another contractor was sitting on a coding decision that was delaying
their work. The letter went on: We cannot be held responsible or liable for delays caused by others.
The project was already two months behind, so problems were becoming very real and serious. Karin
finally decided to call a meeting of all parties to the project and partnering agreement. She began by
asking for problems people were encountering while working on the project. Although participants
were reluctant to be first for fear of being perceived as a complainer, it was not long before
accusations and tempers flared out of control. It was always some group complaining about another
group. Several participants complained that others were sitting on decisions that resulted in their work
being held up. One consultant said, It is impossible to tell who s in charge of what. Another participant
complained that although the group met separately on small problems, it never met as a total

Similarities Between Southern Colonies And New England...
In 1607 a group of English settlers built village in Jamestown, Virginia. King Jaime I of England
founded a colony in the first seven months after its arrival. Within these colonies we find the New
England colonies and South Carolina colonies. We will analyze and compare the government systems,
religious and economic development of both colonies and how they were related. We are going to start
discussing the economic aspect of both colonies, it is important to note that the economic activities
and trade of each colony depended on the environment in which the settlers lived. Geography and
climate were important factors that impacted the economic and commercial activities between New
England colonies and Southern colonies because these depended on the environment. The article,
Economy in Colonial New England talks about the economy in the New England colony, it says In
contrast to the southern colonies, which could produce tobacco, rice, and indigo in exchange for
imports, New England s colonies couldn t offer much to England beyond fish, furs, and naval stores.
The New England colonies used the fishing and the construction of boats to maintain economically.
They made soap, clothing and candles. Its exports fish, whale products, boats, wood products, furs,
maple syrup, copper, horses, beer and whiskey. They had problems with agriculture, it was difficult to
plant wheat because the quality of nutrients on the land was poor, but corn, pumpkins, rye and beans

Tissues and Cell Structures
Tissues are groupings of cells with similar functions. There are four main kinds of human tissues:
Muscle Tissue
Muscular tissue is made up of cells that have sliding protein (actin, a globular protein, and myosin)
filaments. As these filaments slide over each other, they cause the cell to contract. Cells are arranged
in cables within cables, twined around each other, so that when a muscle contracts, it is actually
millions of cells contracting synchronously. There are three types of muscle tissue; cardiac muscle that
operates in the heart; skeletal muscle which is used for locomotion (among other functions) and is
found all over the body; and smooth muscle which is found in a variety of organs (such as the stomach
and bladder) and in blood vessels. Smooth muscle also causes our hair to stand on end.
Nervous Tissue
Nervous tissue makes up the brain and nervous system. It is used to transmit information around the
body for a huge variety of tasks (for example, controlling muscles). Apart from in the brain, it is also
found in the spine and in sensory organs such as the eyes. It is made up of cells called neurons which
transmit electric chemical signals around the body and centrally to the brain. For example, when we
feel pain in our finger, it is caused by sensory input to the nerve cells in the finger, which transmit an
electric impulse to the brain. The brain then translates this impulse into what we call pain.
Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue, among other things,

Codes Of Ethics In Engineering
Ethics in Engineering
Ethics is the study of the characteristics of morals which involves the moral selections created by
individuals as they connect with other people. Engineers need to be mindful of ethics as they make
selections during their professional practice of engineering. Engineering ethics is a system of moral
principles and the field of applied ethics which applies to the practice of engineering and which can
also be seen as the rules and standards governing the conduct of engineers in their positions as
professionals. In engineering there are ethics that need to be upheld and respected.
Engineering practice can be characterized as a profession as compared to an occupation or job . The
following are attributes of a profession: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The codes also show the duties, rights, and obligations of the affiliates of the profession. Clearly, the
codes of ethics are not broad enough to cover all possible ethical problems that an engineer might face
in his or her career. The codes provide opening points for creating ethical resolutions. It is crucial to
know what code of ethics does not implicate: a code of ethics is not a legal script, so a professional
can t be arrested and put in jail for defying its provisions. Although defying the code of ethics may end
up in removal from a professional community (ECSA), removal from a community normally will not
result in an inability to practice engineering. A code of ethics does not constitute new ethical and
moral principles; these principles are established for centuries of societal and human interactions.
Engineers were developed with the codes of ethics along with their respective professional
communities. In the beginning, code of ethics was related to standard business practices. Code of
ethics were updated and modified as the professional communities grew over the years. Code of ethics
can sometimes be very specific and detailed but sometimes it can be general and fairly

The Most Active Area Of Our Plate Tectonics Essay
While tracking all of Earths major earthquakes and volcanos there became trends that developed.
These trends allowed me to actually learn from our own Earth. The most active area of our plate
tectonics was subduction zones. This type of plate boundary was the reason for the majority of the
earthquakes documented over the semester. Most of these earthquakes were shallow, but at times had
very deep focal points. Because of the old, cold plate being sub ducted I saw significantly more deep
focus earthquakes in this tectonic setting. Subduction zones were also responsible for the deepest
earthquakes that were experienced throughout the semester. While capturing the title of the most
active, deepest earthquakes, it also produced the largest earthquakes of the semester. Subduction zones
accounted for nearly all of the earthquakes that registered a magnitude above 5.7. Because of these
earthquakes being the largest, they also created the most damage. These plates were able to cause the
most damage because of how much elastic energy they could store in their old, cold, and brittle plates.
There were several earthquakes throughout the semester that took the lives of the people living in the
area while causing destruction on their community infrastructure. Subduction zones also turned out to
be the setting for most of the active volcanos that I charted throughout the semester. The most
common type of volcano over the semester was a stratovolcano. Most of these were found along the

Aeneas As A Trojan Hero In Greco-Roman Mythology
Aeneas was a Trojan hero in Greco Roman mythology. He was the son of Aphrodite and the prince
Anchises. He is also believed to be a descendant of Remus and Romulus in Roman Mythology. His
story starts when Zeus wanted to take revenge on Aphrodite for making all the gods fall in love with
mortal women. As a punishment, Zeus made her fall in love with Anchises. In some versions of the
story Aphrodite stumbles upon Anchises while traveling or appears before him. Whichever version it
is, Anchises is smitten by Aphrodite s beauty. After sleeping together, Aphrodite reveals her true form
to him. Anchises feared the consequences for what he did. Aphrodite assures him that there would be
no consequences as long as he kept it a secret. She also informed him that she will be giving birth to
Aeneas. Depending on the version you read, Aeneas was destined to become the leader of the Trojan
Dardanians. Before Aeneas was born. When Aeneas was born, Aphrodite takes Aeneas to the nymphs
of Mount Ida. She gets the nymphs to agree to raise him for five years, then to take him to Anchises.
In some versions, Anchises later brags about making love to Aphrodite and gets struck by lightning
from zeus, causing Aeneas to have to carry him out of the flames of Troy. Aeneas was one of the few
survivors of the Trojan war and was protected and guided by a few of the gods and goddesses. In most
versions, Apollo and Aphrodite come to his aid in his battle against the Diomedes of Argos who nearly

Effects Of Hormones And Antibiotics On Animals And Humans
The Effects of Consuming Hormones and Antibiotics to Animals and Humans Not everyone knows
what they are eating on a daily basis. Some believe what they read from the label on a package. While
another will go with what a commercial that they heard on the television said. The truth of the matter
is that you can not go around believing everything that someone has said. The only way that you can
be certain as to what you are eating is if you actually know what has gone into the process of
preparing that meal. There are many ways that someone can protect themselves and their family from
getting these possibly life threatening illnesses that could harm not just your life, but also a future
child that could possibly be consumed later on down the road. Throughout the past couple decades,
researches have discovered the causes of consuming of hormones and antibiotics in both animals and
humans. Nine out of ten calves in the United States are given hormonal growth stimulators. Some of
the reasons why farmers would give their animals hormone growth stimulators and antibiotics would
be so the animals would grow faster than they normally would. Since the animals are growing faster,
the farmers are making more money. The way that they are making more than what they would be
without using hormones and antibiotics is because the animals tend to eat more the longer they are
alive. If the animals are getting a boost in their growing process, they will not be consuming as much
food,

Travel Writing In Jonathan Swift s Gulliver Travel By...
In the eighteenth Century, travel writing was normally known as the book of voyages, which chiefly
comprised of oceanic journals. In eighteenth century Britain, every well known author worked in the
travel writing structure. A portion of the aclaimed books of eighteenth century are A Voyage Round
the World by Way of the Great South Sea by George Shelvocke , Journal of a voyage to Lisbon by
Henry Fielding, Travels through France and Italy by Tobias Smollett, A Sentimental Journey Through
France and Italy by Laurence Sterne , A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland by Samuel

Swift s Gulliver travel is considered one of the best book of eighteenth Century since it is a perfect
work of art of satire . In his first voyage Gullivers find himself in Lilliput where people are just six

Brobdingnagians but also their moral and profound size. The Brobdingnagians are just the reverse of
what the Lilliputians were. The Brobdingnagians are forgiving .Swift focuses on the superiority of the
giants and the irrelevance of Gulliver. While the Lilliputians attacked Gulliver with spears and arrows

The Three Dimensions Of Celebrity Worship
There are three dimensions of celebrity worship which are consistent with the absorption addiction
model (Maltby, Day, McCutcheon, Houran, Ashe, 2005). These three dimensions are entertainment
social, intense personal, and borderline pathological. In the Entertainment social celebrity worship, an
individual develops an attraction to a favorite celebrity, which is consistent with Stever s (1991)
observation (as cited by McCutcheon et al., 2003) about the celebrity s perceived ability to capture the
attention of fans. It includes attitudes and behaviors such as My friends and I like to discuss what my
favorite celebrity has done, and Learning the life story of my favorite celebrity is a lot of fun
(McCutcheon et al., 2003).
The next level of celebrity worship is characterized by Intense personal feelings, where behaviors and
attitudes like I consider my favorite celebrity to be my soul mate, and I have frequent thoughts about
my favorite celebrity, even when I don t want to. are common (McCutcheon et al., 2003). This is the
level where the compulsive and intensive feeling of the fan towards the celebrity is apparent as well as
some occasional obsessive tendencies (Maltby et al., 2005). At this point, people are absorbed with the
life of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there is a contrasting view of celebrity worship wherein the positive roles carried out by
these fans in maintaining social networks around their favourite celebrities are emphasized (Maltby et
al., 2001). The said behaviour can be beneficial to the individual because it supports productive social
relationships, which may also serve as psychological buffer against stressors (Maltby et al., 2001). In
relation to adolescent development, parasocial interactions formed in this stage may contribute to
social, emotional, and transitional roles of adolescents (Adams Price Green,

HOW AFRICAN AMERICAN SEGREGATION INFLUENCED SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN
FOLK MUSIC DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION
John Hilderbrand
History 255: Race, Rock and Roll, and American History
April 29, 2016
Introduction Folk music was shaped and influenced by segregation during the Great Depression
between blacks and whites, which led to divergent forms of African American folk music in isolated
towns where black music could evolve from its African origins. Even before the Great Depression,
earlier African American music styles have influenced the folk music of southern Appalachia. The
banjo is one of the most important musical instruments playing in Appalachia folk music, and it is a
little known fact that this instrument was introduced by African Americans, as well as African work
songs and chants to this region.1 This paper will address how segregation between blacks and whites
have influenced folk music, if at all, and if racial tensions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some African Americans families settled in small towns which became predominantly black and poor.
This occurred throughout Appalachia, where blacks and whites tended to live in separate towns. When
black folk bands traveled to different festivals, they interacted with white folk artists and exchanged
musical methods weather they knew it or not. Some of the songs from African American folk artist
were adopted by white banjo players as early as 1830s such as Dan Emmett and Billy Whitlock, who
were part of a traveling minstrel show in Virginia according to historian George Gibson7. George
suggests that the blending of white and black music took place well before the minstrel performers
during the 1840s7. Which would allow for white folk artists to use their influence popularizing song
material that would have not gained much notice if it was kept within the confines of the black
folklore and

Killer Whales Kept in Captivity Essay
For several years, Americans have been visiting amusement parks, like SeaWorld and Six Flags, to
observe large animals like orcas, also known as killer whales. These whales are quite difficult to view
in the wild, but can now be seen for a simple fee. Orcas are known to be one of the smartest mammals.
They are friendly, and this has caused people to take advantage of them. For the past sixty years,
people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make a profit from their
exhibitions. Often, without considering the orcas quality of life. While kept in captivity, killer whales
are forced to do many tricks they normally wouldn t do in the wild. Over the years, there have been
numerous controversies regarding killer whales ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2010, Tillikum killed Dawn Brancheau, as described in a recent news article: The SeaWorld trainer,
he crushed, dismembered, and partially swallowed (Brower). Tillikum grabbed the trainer and dragged
her into the water. After seeing these incidents occur, people have urged SeaWorld to ban these
activities. Permitting such activities will create more problems that can cause the injury and death of
more people like Dawn, who love and cared for the animals. Some people argue that keeping orcas in
captivity is not a problem, yet they do not realize some of the limitations and dangers orcas suffer
when kept in captivity. One reason is that these unpredictable, thirty foot long creatures are usually
kept in a tank that is too small for them, compared to the ocean where they can swim freely. In
captivity, space is limited. According to one expert, orcas can swim up to 100 miles per day a
phenomenal amount, in comparison to the exercise they receive in captivity (Cronin). While in
captivity, an orca has to keep swimming in circles or float, unable to exercise adequately in a confined
space. The small tanks also prevent orcas from living in their natural group sizes, or pods. In the wild,
killer whales typically travel in pods of between five and 30 (Melissa). In captivity, fewer than five
whales are kept together, an imbalance that makes the whales more aggressive towards one another.
This can lead to dangerous, territorial situations in which captive

There is a story behind it also. So the army was struggling to keep people alive while they were off to

Pathos Ethos In Bowling For Columbine
The 2002 film Bowling for Columbine is a documentary written, directed, and narrated by Michael
Moore. Moore has won numerous awards including the Academy Award for best documentary feature.
The film explores acts of violence with guns and the primary causes for the Columbine School
Massacre, where two students shot and killed thirteen people and injured twenty one others. Bowling
for Columbine takes a deep and often disturbing probe into what the motives may have been for the
shooters and investigates other gun related issues along the way. Moore explores different aspects of
gun culture such as receiving free guns from a bank, taking a look at America s violent history, and
interviewing important people like Charlton Heston, former president of the National Rifle
Association. The film ultimately comes to the conclusion that the American culture of fear along with
the accessibility of guns is the reason why there are so many gun related deaths. This thesis is
supported by many examples Ethos, Logos, and Pathos evidence.
Ethos is when the author uses the reputation, credibility, experience, and values of the author or an
expert as a means of persuasion. Moore himself is a renowned documentary maker and he ensures that
his film is factually true. However, at times he manipulates facts and other people to suit his needs.
For example, in the beginning of the film he is seen opening an account at a bank where customers
that open an account receive a free gun. Moore himself

Hotel Rwanda vs. Erin Brockovich
Two Different Ways to Murder Thousands of People Hotel Rwanda and Erin Brockovich are two
provocative films that take a look at separate deviant acts but still present similar dangerous social
problems. The conflicts that are portrayed are different in the means of operation but both share a
similar end with the endangerment of thousands of people. We will examine how these deviant
decisions affect both their societies and the reasons behind these atrocious acts. Hotel Rwanda is a
very graphic film filled with a tremendous amount of deviance and social problems. The Hutu tribe

As Hirschi has been quoted concluding that a child s relationship with his or her parent is the most
important factor in determining involvement in delinquent activities. Those who had weak bonds with
their parents were most likely to commit delinquent acts (Tepperman 2010). Hirschi s theory sheds
light on the fact that children still at crucial developmental stages of their lives are very easily
influenced by their parents and the amount of involvement one s parents has in their own lives. In this
film many of the children witnessed their own fathers participating in these barbaric acts and were
encouraged to stand up and fight for their family. A problematic social upbringing where children are
forced to interact with parents taking on violent roles has a huge impact on their own behaviors. In this
story the children gain a sense of attachment and shared identity, which is facilitated by violent family
values and rituals, such as, murder and violence. This is known as Authoritarian parenting where the
parents have a high level of control but are not very caring (forcing them to fight in a war, not
worrying if they get killed). The children seemingly become brainwashed by these notions and accept
it as their responsibility or as fate . Psychologist Jean Piaget showed in his research the self is a social

Therefore, I made the decision of splitting the story into two posters that could work as part of the
same marketing campaign whose main goal is to show the deep contrasts between life in COIN and
life on the surface.
The first motion poster is focused on scenes 1 and 2 of the storyboard. In scene 1, the dome that
covers an atomic reactor crashes and the radiation spreads rapidly. The dome rotates as a way of
transitioning to the next scene where the audience, in contrast, can appreciate the magnificence of a
whale swimming near one of the underwater settlements while shinning sunbeams are filtered through
the sea surface. The main goal of this piece is, therefore, to show the deterioration of the environment
and the danger of radiation on the surface in opposition to the peaceful life in the Oceanic cities where
nature is still a top priority.
The second poster is a combination of scenes 3, 4, 5 and 6. In the first part, we can see a dark tunnel
with graffities on its walls and the wheel of a bike with a U lock on the bottom right corner. Suddenly,
the streetlight starts to flicker and a threatening shadow is reflected on the right side of the screen. The
tunnel, which has the same dome shape that appeared in the previous motion poster, rotates once again
to show the following sequence. In this sequence, we can see a woman s hand holding a CMIST card

My Education At San Francisco State University Essay
Figuring out what made you, you is a hard thing to accomplish, is it a mixture of your mother s
intuition and your father s stubbornness. Or is it the fact that you have his nose and her smile. Or is
that distant look in your eye you got from your grandmother. To include education into this age old
question brings up another. Who had the biggest impact on my life, the one who made me decide that
continuing my education was worth it. I would have to say it would have to be my father, a man who
believed he could make me into the child he wasn t. My Father Blake Christopher Thomas has had the
biggest impact on my life in both positive and negative ways, he is the reason I decided to continue
my education at San Francisco State University.
I am named after my father, a man whose deep hearted laughter could fill a room and whose stern
words and big smile filled my whole world. Standing at 6 5 he was, for lack of better words, my
skyscraper. Since a young age my father s worried, he worried if I would grow up to be a delinquent,
an imbecile, or my mother. The same his way his father raised him, he wanted to do the same for me,
with structure and family values.
For the first years of my life I went to a private school a place where my father knew I would succeed
a place where I would have gone on to the best of the best, consequently the best was 20,000 dollars a
year. In turn instead of private school, he gave me books, I cherished it, it allowed me to escape reality

Alligator And Crocodile Compare And Contrast
Most people believe that all Alligators and crocodiles live in the Everglades region in Florida, as it s a
really well known place for each to reside, but they don t even live next to one another in most
instances. The environment that alligators and crocodiles live in is very different from one another.
There are only 2 types of alligators the in the world, American and Chinese. American Alligators live
in freshwater areas down in the Southeastern portion of the U.S, while the Chinese Alligators reside in
eastern China. They increase plant diversity and provide habitats for other surrounding animals during
the droughts. Unlike alligators, crocodiles have 14 different species, with many on the brink of
extinction. They reside in saltwater areas, living in the tropical regions of the America s, Africa, Asia,
and Australia because they have a high sensitivity to the cold. The two creatures never live side by

Many believe they have the same exact features, which isn t exactly the case. They ve got a few slight
differences that make them different from one another. Alligators are significantly smaller than
crocodiles. The average length of an adult alligator is 13.1 feet, but are sometimes known to grow a
little over 14 feet. Adult crocodiles are usually around 14 23 feet long, depending on the species.
Crocodiles also weigh significantly more than alligators. The adult crocodile weighs around 2000
pounds, while the alligator weighs in at 800 pounds average. Their lifespans are also in very different
ranges of the other. Crocodiles live to be about anywhere between 40 to 100 years, while alligators

or out in the wild. However, most wouldn t bother recognizing these differences because it s frankly

in this paper will include, but will not be limited to: safety regarding human consumption, regulatory
controls, and how these two different products are produced. To provide an overview of these
important topics, a distinct contrast will be made. The paper concludes with an overview of the topics

understand the effects of consumption. When the effects of consuming organic foods are examined, a
different outcome is discovered. According to Huber, Rembialkowska, Srednicka, Vijver (2011), a
large scale study named PARSIFAL concluded: children which consumed organic foods (regularly)
showed lower allergenic rates as well as lower body weights when compared to traditional or
engineered foods (Huber, Rembialkowska, Srednicka, Vijver 2011). With further research, other
positive results are discovered. Specifically, a study produced by Princeton reviled that consuming
organic foods lowered risks from chemical contamination, supplemental hormones, and antibiotic
risks ( Greening Princeton , n.d.). In contrast to GMOs, consuming organic foods were directly linked
to positive results, which helps solidify the argument that they are a safer and healthier option over
engineered foods. This conclusion also aids in the point of discussion (which will be reviewed below)
that stricter FDA guidelines need to be emplaced to protect American citizens from unknowingly
consuming GMO products; which could have possibly dangerous, unknown long term side effects.
The FDA s current labeling policy should be stricter in its guidance on the labeling of foods;
unequivocally, GMOs. First, we will examine the FDA s current labeling policy in regards to GMOs in

The Ageing Population
Ageing population is a worldwide pattern; it has major implications for the way in which programs
designed to support older people are funded. While social security and means tested social assistance
programs for long term care protect the living standards of the poor, middle income groups face under
appreciated risks, such as outliving their capital or needing expensive long term care. This will cause
economic, social, and political implications of a rapidly ageing population, which will affect society
and businesses.
New Zealand, like many countries, has ageing population, with an increasing proportion of people in
the older age groups and a declining proportion of children. Many impacts such as increase in the
dependency ratio, increased government spending on health care and pensions, high taxes, shortage of
workers, changing sectors within the economy, and higher savings for pensions may reduce capital
investment can effect all societies. Since 1960, the proportion of the population under 15 years of age
has declined from around 33% and is expected to fall to 18% by 2031. (Statistics New Zealand, 2009)
According to New Zealand Parliament (2011), age population is a consequence of the baby boom

Mr. Darcy s Painting: A Look at Elizabeth s Reaction to a Smile
In Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth undergoes a transition from an initial prejudice against
Mr. Darcy to an understanding of him which leads to marriage. The transition that Elizabeth
undergoes is sparked by curious events. The moment of Mr. Darcy s proposal and the letter he gives
Elizabeth immediately afterwards, to Elizabeth s unexpected visit to Pemberley, Austen makes us
question how one changes their opinion as quickly as Elizabeth does about Darcy. In following this
transition we are brought to the heart of the novel: when Elizabeth sees a painting of Mr. Darcy in his
home at Pemberley. Here something happens to Elizabeth when she fixed his [Mr. Darcy s ... Show

Collins. The fiery anger that comes out of the Darcy proposal is contrasted to the mild disagreement
between Elizabeth and Collins. The language Elizabeth used in both cases show how differently she
takes the proposals. With Darcy, she holds the resentment he has towards the behavior of her family as
well as their class differences as a large problem for their potential marriage. This is not the problem
between Elizabeth and Collins. Both Collins and Darcy provide Elizabeth with wealth that would
make her comfortable in a practical way (even though one is clearly better than the other in this
manner). But the argument for Elizabeth against Mr. Collins is her heart. She doesn t respect Collins
in the way that she respects Darcy. Instead of using the word gratitude like Elizabeth does with Darcy,
she responds Accept my thanks for the compliment you are paying me. I am very sensible of the
honour of your proposals, but it is impossible for me to do otherwise than to decline them Elizabeth
calls what she feels a complement and a honor but leaves out respect. If she had a respect for Collins
she would feel more gratitude for his proposal but the way the conversation unfolds reveals Elizabeth
s problem. Collins stops himself before his feelings run away from himself to explain logically why
they are getting married. And when Elizabeth informs him of her answer he does not accept her

the way for both specialist and mainstream software firms to deliver applications over the internet.
The next development in cloud computing was Amazon Web Services in 2002, which provided a suite
of cloud based services including storage, computation and human intelligence through the Amazon
Mechanical Turk. Amazon Mechanical Turk holds a database of human intelligence tasks these are
tasks that people can login to complete for money or credit. These tasks can range from organizing

The Inequality of Women in Leadership Throughout history, the United States have overcome a

inequality, specifically in business management. Women are facing difficulties in advancing to

Chemers perceived that there are three theoretical explanations for the main differences between male
and female leadership. One difference, the most obvious, is biological differences, which is based
around hormones and temperament. The second difference is culturally diversities. This tells that
socialized roles are varied per culture. The final difference is structurally determined. The different
sexs have very diverse organizational structures (Eagly, Makhijani, Klonsky, 1992; Chemers, 2000).
Placing practical differences aside, the essential problem with women leadership roles is actually seen
in the attitudes of those around them. The attitudes people have towards women when they are the
ones making decisions are a perception with no objectivity, formally known as a stereotype.
Stereotyping is one of the main obstacles women endure in their leadership positions. Gender Role
Theory is the development of expectations people create of their own and others behavior based on the
beliefs about what is appropriate for both male and females. For example, if a female were to pull out
a man s chair at a restaurant before seating herself or open his car door before getting in the car, that
would be found as odd behavior for a women.

the two countries throughout the Cold War. While lack of information and historical bias from an
American point of view suggests that the USSR created its nuclear industry solely to beat the west,

whose economic development largely relied on the production of fossil fuels, is unparalleled. The
Soviet Union had two main, long term incentives for investing in nuclear energy: One, 80% of the
countries fossil resources were located in the eastern half of the country while 75% of the population
lived in the western half, and two, nuclear power is less damaging to the local environments than
conventional fossil power. Interestingly, the USSR actually led the world in the use of nuclear power
to generate electricity, creating the world s first nuclear power plant at Obninsk on June 27th, 1954.
The success and speed of the Soviet Union s reactor production shows both advantages and
disadvantages of the country s political system, as the country was able to allocate all resources to the

investment; however, this often incurred high costs both with safety standards and economically.
However, by 1985, the countries investments in nuclear energy production appeared to have paid off,

Future Shock Reflection

Toffler s Future Shock, it signifies the life style evolution from past generation to the future (which is

today generation experiences. In Future shock, most of the written issues in the book were happened;
it is happening and not impossible to happen. In this book, He gave emphasis to what increasingly rate
of change can do to people. Within a short period of time, the world is abruptly changes that bring
confusion and too much shock to every individual. As what the author predicted, technology changed
rapidly from time to time. If you cannot easily adapt to what the future will be, you might feel stress

The United States And The Constitution
In any society, the first thing that must be determined is from where the power to govern comes. No
matter what form government takes, one thing remains constant; no person or group can govern
without the will and consent of the people. This goes for despotic mad men and duly elected officers
of a free electorate. If those who rule must command the will of those they lead, it must then follow
that all executive power flows not from nobility, birthright, or wealth, but from the people themselves.
It is this very principle, that any government was given authority and legitimacy from its subjects, that
the United States government is based on, namely the Constitution. Taking their cue from the federal
government, the states Nevada ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Constitution of any major government in the world; However, if this is the document that all law in
America is based then why is it so short? Because those founding fathers that had opposed centralized
government wanted to have a document that expressly explained the duties, powers, and

they compared them with the mass of hydrogen, or the relative atomic mass. Firstly in 1862 Alexandre
Beguyer de Chancoutois arranged the elements into a three dimensional form of classification called
the telluric screw. The telluric screw plotted the elements on the outside of a cylinder where one
complete turn corresponded to an atomic weight increase of 16. This resulted in curtain elements

on trends and because of this we can quickly identify the trends and properties of an element just by

predict the types of chemical reactions that are likely for an element. Rather than memorise facts and

The Issues Of Technology And Technology
Introduction
Within this essay the issues to be discussed are problems about technology. Information technology is
very important in today s world and is used daily by many people all across the continents.
Information technology has its pros and cons like other technology does, but one of the major
problems are security and privacy. The main issue of this topic would be cyber threats to computer
networks. Examples are threats involving denial of service attacks, malicious software, sniffers and
more.
About Technology
Technology is a very important aspect in life that is used on a daily basis. Technology is the
application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. There are many different types of
technology used throughout the world today. Some are assistive technology used by individuals with
disabilities, medical technology that refers to the diagnostic or therapeutic application of science and
technology to improve management of health conditions, Communication technology, Information
technology, transport technology and defense technology. Information technology is a term that

Power In Iran
In politics, power is the ability to influence or control the behaviour of people. The term authority is
often used for perceived as legitimate by the social structure. (Greiner and Schein, 1988) On the
surface the U.S and the Iranian governments seen to have a lot in common, when it comes the
president they are elected by popular vote, a strong legislature and the powerful judiciary(Inside Iran
the structure of power in Iran | terror and Tehran | FRONTLINE, 2000). When discussing the power
held by the president of both Irian and the U.S. It is clear from the begging that it is clear to see that

Only the president is elected by a single national constituency and all powers is vested in office
(McKay and Professor of Government David McKay, 2013, p. 213). This is centrally placed which
coheres that public expectations are high. The president is elated for a four year term which is limited
to completing to full terms in office. When assessing the power in which the American president holds
compare to the Iranian President it seems to uphold a great amount of powers somewhat like the
Supreme leader of Irian has. Although within the American system there are checks and balances by
which each bench can keep to other two branches from invading its constitutional powers. (McKay
and Professor of Government David McKay, 2013, p. 213) This is where the senate can disapprove
top level presidential appointments and refuse to ratify treaties. The two chambers of congress acting
together can impeach and convict and also remove the resident and also federal judges from office.
However the president has the power to veto any of the acts done by the congress, and only if over
2/3rd of the chambers can override this veto. This shows that the power of the president is great

making structure. Therefore it can be seen that the power of the president can be

Webster Technique
The Webster Technique and Chiropractic Care during Pregnancy
Chiropractic care is defined as health maintenance of the spinal column, discs, related nerves and bone
geometry without drugs or surgery. It involves the art and science of adjusting misaligned joints of the
body, especially of the spine, which reduces spinal nerve stress and therefore promotes health
throughout the body. The American Pregnancy Association (APA) notes since chiropractors are trained
to work with pregnant women there are no risks associated with receiving chiropractic care throughout
pregnancy and in fact, the care may be beneficial.
Pregnancy and Chiropractic Benefits
Pregnant women go through several physiological and endocrinological changes as their bodies
prepare for creating the environment for the baby as it develops. Changes in the pelvis, the
development of a protruding abdomen, which increases a back curve and postural adaptions, can result

Essay on Sex in Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness
Let s Talk About Sex
Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness is the story of Genly Ai s travels to a strange planet
called Gethen, or Winter. His mission there is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join an alliance
Genly Ai represents called the Ekumen . However, his journey is rather difficult due to the great
difference in societies from Genly Ai s home planet, Earth, and this new one. In Gethen, he learns that
the people are completely unsexed for the majority of their days. When they are sexed, it is only for a
few days and each person is either male or female during this time. The different governments use
Genly Ai as a pawn, but in the end they join the alliance. Unfortunately, it comes with the price of his
friend s life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
LeGuin does this to reinforce the notion that Genly Ai is completely unassimilated to Gethen culture.
She does this by having Genly Ai describe him as a woman, but calling him by the male title King
where LeGuin could have had Genly Ai call Argaven monarch , a sexless title that still holds as much
accuracy. The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when
LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as
my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying,
spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply
because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females,
has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of
people and their sex.
As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him
adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named
Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68).
Here, LeGuin uses the absence of sexed description to show that Genly Ai has adjusted to the
Gethenian culture. Then, when LeGuin has Genly Ai discuss the issue of parenting he simply states,
that the distinction between a maternal and a paternal instinct is

Sandwich Bikes
In the world of home exercise equipment, few pieces have been around as long as the exercise bike.
Although exercise bikes (fitness bikes, studio bikes) received a bad rap for a number of years, being
used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use.
There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people
think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle,
pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a wider
seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined position. Both
bikes have good and bad points as we shall see.
The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike ride
than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a neutral position.
Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an upright can irritate the
condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get on and off of because of a
higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or overweight people. An upright
takes up less room than a recumbent. You may want to keep this in mind if your exercise area is on the
small side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Comparing Violence In The Lottery And A Good Man
The inherent violence present within mankind has been a reoccurring theme of literature, artwork, and
other media for thousands of years. Human nature has roots embedded within macabre expression,
whether through action or depiction, and makes human savagery commonplace in past and present
society. Many artists, writers, and poets appeal to or offer commentary to society as in The Third of
May, The Lottery, and A Good Man is Hard to Find through an implementation of real world violence
in their works. As an intended or unintended consequence, the very essence of barbarism is glorified
in a manner that is not easily extirpated. This dishonesty in justifying war and violence plagues
society, and offers little benefit to mankind; rather, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, savagery is prevalent in the narrative. The soulnessness of characters throughout The
Lottery can be seen as the threat of death approaches. The survival instinct of individuals overpowers
the bond between families as mothers offer their children to have their own lives saved. Tessie
Hutchinson, a mother in the family drawn in the story, even attempts to decrease her chances of being
drawn by adding her married daughter: There s Don and Eva... make them take their chance (Jackson).
The tradition blindly followed in The Lottery is a remnant of ancient rituals that are seemingly
barbaric, yet have been implemented into this seemingly modern society. As Tew states in her essay,
Clinging to obsolete views and practices brings a society back to the level of its ancestors, and this is
exactly the case in The Lottery. While they have differing implications, the violence in The Lottery
can be related to de Goya s paintings; the portrayal of this barbarism is demeaning to human
accomplishments and demonstrates the primitive nature that has and always will exist within human
nature. Even in a post modern society as seen in The Lottery, extreme violence may exist and will be
accepted as tradition, even when it offers little legitimate contribution to the

Female Love In Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon
In a man s world, women who want must suffer. They are turned away from personal achievement and
forced down a path that encourages a devotional, misguided love. The desperation derived from this
obsessive love inevitably causes destruction to its bearer in Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon. In her
novel, the protagonist Milkman searches for his personal and communal identity against a backdrop of
disenfranchised, lovelorn women, and the reader watches as their inescapable desires for affection
bring women to ruin. Morrison s female characters are constantly wanting, propelled by their quest for
intimacy. In this novel, female love is all consuming and obsessive to reflect age old oppressive
patriarchal values; women are primarily defined by the men in their lives and achieving a home and a
husband should be paramount for even nonconforming women. This wreaks havoc on the psyches of
Hagar and Corinthians and begets endless anxiety over marriage and commitment. Through the
consistent disintegration of her female characters, Toni Morrison examines the repressive, traumatic
ideal path for women and its prevalence in our and her novel s society.
As Hagar s love for Milkman grows more and more obsessive, Morrison reveals the bitter
consequences of life as a woman seeking intimacy in a strictly patriarchal world. In the beginning of
the novel, Hagar is associated primarily with her female relatives, Reba and Pilate. Even then, well fed

The Effects Of Dry Needling On Physical Therapists
Dry needling is currently one of the scope of practice battles encountered in the physical therapy
profession. The hot topic is extremely controversial and is not only debated by physical therapists but
by acupuncturists as well. The primary issue is whether dry needling should actually be considered
under the physical therapists scope of practice. The controversial aspect arises because the dry
needling technique is technically invasive because the skin is being punctured. Another issue that
comes about this topic is the insufficient amount of research conducted. (Benefits/Side Effects) In
addition, dry needling is also not currently included in the DPT programs curriculum. Therefore, those
physical therapists who want to acquire this skill it is required to be learned in a continuing education
course. Furthermore, there are currently only 18 locations in the United States that offer dry needling
education to physical therapists. Another issue concerning dry needling is how this technique should
be coded and billed. This being said, it is illegal for physical therapists in New York, Idaho, Tennessee,
Hawaii, and South Dakota to perform dry needling in their practice. For example, Hawaii prohibits
physical therapists from puncturing skin under any circumstances. Although, it is not considered
illegal in the other states, it has not been confirmed as qualifying under the scope of practice by the
state regulatory board. The APTA has even began to contact

The Balanced Scorecard And How It Is Used For A...
Introduction
This report outlines the what the balanced scorecard is and how it is used as a tool used in the business
industry. It outlines its historical development and analyses its usefulness and how it can be applied to
key decisions.
The Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard is a performance management tool that assists in the management of an
organisation s business strategy using traditional financial measurements combined with non financial
information (Candle 2008). Kaplan and Norton (1992), the creators of the concept, introduced the
business scorecard as 4 main perspectives, customer, learning and growth, financial and internal
business process. They breakdown the meaning behind each perspective is as follows: The customer ...

By collecting and analysing the information found, organisations can keep track of their management
system to create opportunities and improve on any shortcomings, making their business more efficient
and effective.
Historical Development of the Balanced Scorecard
The balanced scorecard was brought into attention by Robert Kaplan and David Norton (Kaplan and
Norton 1992). In 1990, the Naplan Norton institute sponsored a one year study, Measuring
Performance in the Organization of the Future (Robertson 2005). This was organised due to concerns
that quantitative financial tools were becoming less useful. David Norton was the study leader whilst
Robert Kaplan was the academic consultant. Many companies, from varying industries, took part in
this study in an effort to establish a more effective performance strategy tool. This led to the creation
of the balanced scorecard and a Harvard Business Review article on the balanced scorecard in 1992 by
Kaplan and Norton (Cobbold and Lawrie 2002). In 1996, a book was published by Kaplan and Norton
where a modified version, the second generation, of the scorecard was introduced as it did not give a
more distinct definition of what a balanced scorecard was and how to apply it (Ahmadgourabi,
Efteghar and Poureisa 2013). Using strategy maps, cause effect chains were added to provide more
contextual reasoning behind decisions to make it

The Competition Between Coca Cola And Coca-Cola
In economics, competition is where rivalry is portrayed in terms of achieving the goal such as
increasing profits, market share and sales capacity by varying the elements in general marketing,
products, prices, distribution and promotion. The microeconomic theory differentiates between perfect
competition and imperfect competition, summarizing that no system of resource allocation is much
more efficient than perfect competition.
Competition going as per the theory causes commercial firms to develop new products, services and
technologies, which would offer consumers greater choices and better products. The greater selection
typically causes lower prices for the products, compared to what the price would be if there was no

Each brand manager is given responsibility for the success or failure of the brands and is compensated
accordingly. This form of competition thus pitted a brand against another brand. Finally, the company
also encourages competition between individual employees. An example of this is a contest between
sales representatives this one alone helps them to market their products with very little competition
from other companies. The sales representative with the highest sales or the best improvement in sales
over a period of time would gain benefits from the employer or customers. It should also be noted that
business and economic competition sales and marketing in most countries is often limited or

  • 6. What Is The Theme Of Lady Lazarus Opening Sentences... Widely considered her most celebrated book of poems, the posthumous Ariel exposes Plath s twisted physiological torment. Perhaps its most well known work, Lady Lazarus unambiguously examines suicide and death. It cloaks its reader in the solitude that weighs so heavily on its author. In this poem, Plath alludes to Lazarus, a man who Jesus resurrects from the dead. Plath is in fact the female foil to this biblical figure, and through the chaos and loneliness her husband, father, and friends cultivate, they ultimately drive her to suicide. However, despite her attempts, the poet unfailingly rises from her deathbed to confront an increasingly harsher world. Similar to Plath, singer songwriter Joni Mitchell introduces themes ... The free willing and bubbly nature of the song ends with the recognition that the greed is the unraveling...and it undoes all the joy that could be. Despite her endeavors and a fictitious blissful relationship, the two are designed to fail together as evidenced by Mitchell s question do you see...how you hurt me baby and her subsequent realization that I hurt you too/Then we both get so blue. Moreover, Mitchell heightens the unstable affair with her assertion, oh I hate you some, I hate you some, I love you some/Oh I love you when I forget about me. However, these epiphanies do not absolve her love. Mitchell s self awareness is essential to understanding her particular predicament. While some are ignorant to the fact that they are captive in an abusive or harmful relationship, whether physical or psychological, Mitchell is acutely conscious in her own. Yet, she is incapable of evading it; moreover, in order to thrive within it, she must neglect own needs, and accordingly reciprocate that harm. • 9. Tissues and Cell Structures Tissues are groupings of cells with similar functions. There are four main kinds of human tissues: Muscle Tissue Muscular tissue is made up of cells that have sliding protein (actin, a globular protein, and myosin) filaments. As these filaments slide over each other, they cause the cell to contract. Cells are arranged in cables within cables, twined around each other, so that when a muscle contracts, it is actually millions of cells contracting synchronously. There are three types of muscle tissue; cardiac muscle that operates in the heart; skeletal muscle which is used for locomotion (among other functions) and is found all over the body; and smooth muscle which is found in a variety of organs (such as the stomach and bladder) and in blood vessels. Smooth muscle also causes our hair to stand on end. Nervous Tissue Nervous tissue makes up the brain and nervous system. It is used to transmit information around the body for a huge variety of tasks (for example, controlling muscles). Apart from in the brain, it is also found in the spine and in sensory organs such as the eyes. It is made up of cells called neurons which transmit electric chemical signals around the body and centrally to the brain. For example, when we feel pain in our finger, it is caused by sensory input to the nerve cells in the finger, which transmit an electric impulse to the brain. The brain then translates this impulse into what we call pain. Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissue, among other things, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Most Active Area Of Our Plate Tectonics Essay While tracking all of Earths major earthquakes and volcanos there became trends that developed. These trends allowed me to actually learn from our own Earth. The most active area of our plate tectonics was subduction zones. This type of plate boundary was the reason for the majority of the earthquakes documented over the semester. Most of these earthquakes were shallow, but at times had very deep focal points. Because of the old, cold plate being sub ducted I saw significantly more deep focus earthquakes in this tectonic setting. Subduction zones were also responsible for the deepest earthquakes that were experienced throughout the semester. While capturing the title of the most active, deepest earthquakes, it also produced the largest earthquakes of the semester. Subduction zones accounted for nearly all of the earthquakes that registered a magnitude above 5.7. Because of these earthquakes being the largest, they also created the most damage. These plates were able to cause the most damage because of how much elastic energy they could store in their old, cold, and brittle plates. There were several earthquakes throughout the semester that took the lives of the people living in the area while causing destruction on their community infrastructure. Subduction zones also turned out to be the setting for most of the active volcanos that I charted throughout the semester. The most common type of volcano over the semester was a stratovolcano. As a punishment, Zeus made her fall in love with Anchises. In some versions of the story Aphrodite stumbles upon Anchises while traveling or appears before him. Whichever version it is, Anchises is smitten by Aphrodite s beauty. After sleeping together, Aphrodite reveals her true form to him. Anchises feared the consequences for what he did. Aphrodite assures him that there would be no consequences as long as he kept it a secret. She also informed him that she will be giving birth to Aeneas. She gets the nymphs to agree to raise him for five years, then to take him to Anchises. In some versions, Anchises later brags about making love to Aphrodite and gets struck by lightning from zeus, causing Aeneas to have to carry him out of the flames of Troy. Some believe what they read from the label on a package. While another will go with what a commercial that they heard on the television said. The truth of the matter is that you can not go around believing everything that someone has said. The only way that you can be certain as to what you are eating is if you actually know what has gone into the process of preparing that meal. There are many ways that someone can protect themselves and their family from getting these possibly life threatening illnesses that could harm not just your life, but also a future child that could possibly be consumed later on down the road. Throughout the past couple decades, researches have discovered the causes of consuming of hormones and antibiotics in both animals and humans. Nine out of ten calves in the United States are given hormonal growth stimulators. Some of the reasons why farmers would give their animals hormone growth stimulators and antibiotics would be so the animals would grow faster than they normally would. Since the animals are growing faster, the farmers are making more money. The way that they are making more than what they would be without using hormones and antibiotics is because the animals tend to eat more the longer they are alive. Permitting such activities will create more problems that can cause the injury and death of more people like Dawn, who love and cared for the animals. Some people argue that keeping orcas in captivity is not a problem, yet they do not realize some of the limitations and dangers orcas suffer when kept in captivity. One reason is that these unpredictable, thirty foot long creatures are usually kept in a tank that is too small for them, compared to the ocean where they can swim freely. In captivity, space is limited. According to one expert, orcas can swim up to 100 miles per day a phenomenal amount, in comparison to the exercise they receive in captivity (Cronin). While in captivity, an orca has to keep swimming in circles or float, unable to exercise adequately in a confined space. The small tanks also prevent orcas from living in their natural group sizes, or pods. In the wild, killer whales typically travel in pods of between five and 30 (Melissa). In captivity, fewer than five whales are kept together, an imbalance that makes the whales more aggressive towards one another. This can lead to dangerous, territorial situations in which captive ... The film ultimately comes to the conclusion that the American culture of fear along with the accessibility of guns is the reason why there are so many gun related deaths. This thesis is supported by many examples Ethos, Logos, and Pathos evidence. Ethos is when the author uses the reputation, credibility, experience, and values of the author or an expert as a means of persuasion. Moore himself is a renowned documentary maker and he ensures that his film is factually true. However, at times he manipulates facts and other people to suit his needs. As Hirschi has been quoted concluding that a child s relationship with his or her parent is the most important factor in determining involvement in delinquent activities. Those who had weak bonds with their parents were most likely to commit delinquent acts (Tepperman 2010). Hirschi s theory sheds light on the fact that children still at crucial developmental stages of their lives are very easily influenced by their parents and the amount of involvement one s parents has in their own lives. In this film many of the children witnessed their own fathers participating in these barbaric acts and were encouraged to stand up and fight for their family. A problematic social upbringing where children are forced to interact with parents taking on violent roles has a huge impact on their own behaviors. In this story the children gain a sense of attachment and shared identity, which is facilitated by violent family values and rituals, such as, murder and violence. This is known as Authoritarian parenting where the parents have a high level of control but are not very caring (forcing them to fight in a war, not worrying if they get killed). When the effects of consuming organic foods are examined, a different outcome is discovered. According to Huber, Rembialkowska, Srednicka, Vijver (2011), a large scale study named PARSIFAL concluded: children which consumed organic foods (regularly) showed lower allergenic rates as well as lower body weights when compared to traditional or engineered foods (Huber, Rembialkowska, Srednicka, Vijver 2011). With further research, other positive results are discovered. Specifically, a study produced by Princeton reviled that consuming organic foods lowered risks from chemical contamination, supplemental hormones, and antibiotic risks ( Greening Princeton , n.d.). In contrast to GMOs, consuming organic foods were directly linked to positive results, which helps solidify the argument that they are a safer and healthier option over engineered foods. • 45. Essay on Sex in Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness Let s Talk About Sex Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness is the story of Genly Ai s travels to a strange planet called Gethen, or Winter. His mission there is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join an alliance Genly Ai represents called the Ekumen . However, his journey is rather difficult due to the great difference in societies from Genly Ai s home planet, Earth, and this new one. In Gethen, he learns that the people are completely unsexed for the majority of their days. When they are sexed, it is only for a few days and each person is either male or female during this time. The different governments use Genly Ai as a pawn, but in the end they join the alliance. Unfortunately, it comes with the price of his friend s life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... LeGuin does this to reinforce the notion that Genly Ai is completely unassimilated to Gethen culture. She does this by having Genly Ai describe him as a woman, but calling him by the male title King where LeGuin could have had Genly Ai call Argaven monarch , a sexless title that still holds as much accuracy. The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying, spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females, has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of people and their sex. As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68). Here, LeGuin uses the absence of sexed description to show that Genly Ai has adjusted to the Gethenian culture. Then, when LeGuin has Genly Ai discuss the issue of parenting he simply states, that the distinction between a maternal and a paternal instinct is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Sandwich Bikes In the world of home exercise equipment, few pieces have been around as long as the exercise bike. Although exercise bikes (fitness bikes, studio bikes) received a bad rap for a number of years, being used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use. There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle, pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a wider seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined position. Both bikes have good and bad points as we shall see. The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike ride than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a neutral position. Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an upright can irritate the condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get on and off of because of a higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or overweight people. An upright takes up less room than a recumbent. You may want to keep this in mind if your exercise area is on the small side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 48. Comparing Violence In The Lottery And A Good Man The inherent violence present within mankind has been a reoccurring theme of literature, artwork, and other media for thousands of years. Human nature has roots embedded within macabre expression, whether through action or depiction, and makes human savagery commonplace in past and present society. Many artists, writers, and poets appeal to or offer commentary to society as in The Third of May, The Lottery, and A Good Man is Hard to Find through an implementation of real world violence in their works. As an intended or unintended consequence, the very essence of barbarism is glorified in a manner that is not easily extirpated. Therefore, savagery is prevalent in the narrative. The soulnessness of characters throughout The Lottery can be seen as the threat of death approaches. The survival instinct of individuals overpowers the bond between families as mothers offer their children to have their own lives saved. Tessie Hutchinson, a mother in the family drawn in the story, even attempts to decrease her chances of being drawn by adding her married daughter: There s Don and Eva... make them take their chance (Jackson). The tradition blindly followed in The Lottery is a remnant of ancient rituals that are seemingly barbaric, yet have been implemented into this seemingly modern society. As Tew states in her essay, Clinging to obsolete views and practices brings a society back to the level of its ancestors, and this is exactly the case in The Lottery. While they have differing implications, the violence in The Lottery can be related to de Goya s paintings; the portrayal of this barbarism is demeaning to human accomplishments and demonstrates the primitive nature that has and always will exist within human nature. Even in a post modern society as seen in The Lottery, extreme violence may exist and will be accepted as tradition, even when it offers little legitimate contribution to the ... • 49. Female Love In Toni Morrison s Song Of Solomon In a man s world, women who want must suffer. They are turned away from personal achievement and forced down a path that encourages a devotional, misguided love. The desperation derived from this obsessive love inevitably causes destruction to its bearer in Toni Morrison s Song of Solomon. In her novel, the protagonist Milkman searches for his personal and communal identity against a backdrop of disenfranchised, lovelorn women, and the reader watches as their inescapable desires for affection bring women to ruin. Morrison s female characters are constantly wanting, propelled by their quest for intimacy. In this novel, female love is all consuming and obsessive to reflect age old oppressive patriarchal values; women are primarily defined by the men in their lives and achieving a home and a husband should be paramount for even nonconforming women. This wreaks havoc on the psyches of Hagar and Corinthians and begets endless anxiety over marriage and commitment. Through the consistent disintegration of her female characters, Toni Morrison examines the repressive, traumatic ideal path for women and its prevalence in our and her novel s society. As Hagar s love for Milkman grows more and more obsessive, Morrison reveals the bitter consequences of life as a woman seeking intimacy in a strictly patriarchal world. In the beginning of the novel, Hagar is associated primarily with her female relatives, Reba and Pilate. Even then, well fed Hagar declares, Some of my days were hungry ... • 51. The Effects Of Dry Needling On Physical Therapists Dry needling is currently one of the scope of practice battles encountered in the physical therapy profession. The hot topic is extremely controversial and is not only debated by physical therapists but by acupuncturists as well. The primary issue is whether dry needling should actually be considered under the physical therapists scope of practice. The controversial aspect arises because the dry needling technique is technically invasive because the skin is being punctured. Another issue that comes about this topic is the insufficient amount of research conducted. (Benefits/Side Effects) In addition, dry needling is also not currently included in the DPT programs curriculum. Therefore, those physical therapists who want to acquire this skill it is required to be learned in a continuing education course. Furthermore, there are currently only 18 locations in the United States that offer dry needling education to physical therapists. Historical Development of the Balanced Scorecard The balanced scorecard was brought into attention by Robert Kaplan and David Norton (Kaplan and Norton 1992). In 1990, the Naplan Norton institute sponsored a one year study, Measuring Performance in the Organization of the Future (Robertson 2005). This was organised due to concerns that quantitative financial tools were becoming less useful. David Norton was the study leader whilst Robert Kaplan was the academic consultant. Many companies, from varying industries, took part in this study in an effort to establish a more effective performance strategy tool. This led to the creation of the balanced scorecard and a Harvard Business Review article on the balanced scorecard in 1992 by Kaplan and Norton (Cobbold and Lawrie 2002). In 1996, a book was published by Kaplan and Norton where a modified version, the second generation, of the scorecard was introduced as it did not give a more distinct definition of what a balanced scorecard was and how to apply it (Ahmadgourabi, Efteghar and Poureisa 2013).
