The United States And Communist Russia
The United States and Communist Russia endured a complicated relationship in the first half of the
20th century. In the early 1940 s the U.S. had encouraged an alliance with the Soviets against their
common enemy, Nazi Germany. This short lived accord began to deteriorate as WW II ended. By
1947 U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union had shifted from one of cooperation to a policy of
containment. In 1949, when the Soviets tested their first atomic bomb, it was a widely held belief in
the U.S. that the Russians were an untrustworthy enemy with plans to invade the United States.
America s mood turned on American Communists, labeling them traitors and Russian spies.

HUAC was created by the federal government in 1938 to investigate the subversive activities of
citizens belonging to Communist organizations. The Committee had powers to subpoena and hold
witnesses in contempt of congress, punishable by imprisonment. Following WW II, as anti communist
sentiment rose in the U.S., the Committee enjoyed strong popular support. Being a Communist was
not a crime so most of the people convicted served sentences for perjury or contempt of Congress.
Another tool used to punish citizens suspected of communist affiliations was a practice called the
Blacklist. Having one s name on the Hollywood Blacklist guaranteed that person would be unable to
find work in the motion picture industry. Hollywood screenwriter Michael Wilson was called before
the HUAC in 1951. When he refused to testify, his name was added to the Hollywood Blacklist.
Writing under a pseudonym, Wilson continued to write but after 1951 never received credit, during his
lifetime , for his screenplays including two Oscar Winning movies, Bridge on the River Kwai and
Friendly Persuasion. (King 2016) A young couple living in Brooklyn, NY was about to get caught up
in the anti communist hysteria with serious consequences for them and their two young sons. The
sons, Robert and Michael, would live their lives in the shadow of their parents, Julius and Ethel

The Writers Of The Television
Since the creation of the television, thousands of sitcoms have been created. Most spend a few years
on the air and are quickly forgotten after they have ended. Very few TV shows paved the way for what
television is today and, after spending ten years on the air, Friends is one of those few. Friends was so
groundbreaking because of its unique writing, its cast chemistry, and its ability to resonate with the
people in its era. Friends consists of six friends, Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe,
living in New York and discovering themselves. The writers of the show were able to do something
extremely rare in television; they created an ensemble cast of six main characters. No one person
played a larger role then the others ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The writing of the series played a large role in making it so iconic but making it even more iconic was,
perhaps, it s ensemble. The chemistry, or lack there of, between cast members has been the downfall
of many television series, but that was never a problem for Friends. Not only was each actor perfect
for his or her character, but each actor was also perfect for each other. The show worked best when all
six characters were on the screen. If, for example, Joey had a date, it was rarely shown on screen.
Instead, what was shown was the six friends discussing the date after the fact. Many supporting
characters, such as love interests, were written off because it seemed as if they somehow go in the
way. Monica and Chandler both had many love interests and yet, they ended up marrying each other.
All ten seasons consisted of the same cast, and no one ever got tired of seeing the same six faces on
their TV screen. During season one each cast member was making a different salary but by the end of
the season they were negotiating their pay to be equal, which was unprecedented at the time. The
chemistry was so great that it spilled over into their real lives. All six cast members remain close
friends to this day. Jennifer Aniston is the godmother to Courtney Cox s daughter and while each has
gone on to star in other television series, they will still frequently appear on each other s show.

Hence the scheme proves itself superior to the DC machine. The problem faced by FOC scheme is
complexity in its implementation due to dependence of machine parameters, reference frame
transformation. Later DTC was introduced. Direct torque control (DTC) method is used to control the
torque (finally speed) in variable frequency drives of three phase AC electric motors. From the
measured voltage and current of the motor an estimate of the motor s magnetic flux and torque is
calculated. Integrating the stator voltages, stator flux linkage is estimated. Cross product of measured
motor current vector and estimated stator flux linkage vector results in estimated torque. The
estimated flux magnitude and torque are then compared with their reference values. If either the
estimated flux or torque deviates from the reference more than allowed limits, the transistors of the
variable frequency drive are turned OFF and ON in such a way that the flux and torque errors will
return in their tolerant bands as fast as possible. Thus direct torque control is one form of the
hysteresis control. The method requires only the stator resistance to estimate the stator flux and torque.
The basic DTC scheme [1] consists of two comparators with specified bandwidth, switching table,
voltage source inverter, flux and torque estimation block. Like every control method has some
advantages and disadvantages, DTC method has too. Some of the advantages are lower parameters

The Wrongs Of Woman By Mary Wollstonecraft
Mary Wollstonecraft is hailed as a prominent figure in feminist history. Although viewed in her time
as a controversial figure, her works since have been highly regarded amongst feminist historians.
Throughout Mary s life the literature she produced, she produced with societal issues in the forefront
of her mind. Throughout her literature, Caroline Franklin explains: The need for and loss of maternal
love would become a recurring theme in Wollstonecraft s fiction. Wollstonecraft in her numerous
publications has clearly provided evidence to show her thoughts and opinion on current matters
varying from political to social. Her stance on women in regard to social standing, education and
issues such as marriage seep out of her writings. Wollstonecraft s second novel titled The wrongs of
woman contains the narrative from two women Maria and Jemima. The two women are from two
different social standings. The interesting notion in the novel is that Maria who is of higher social
standing provokes a reader to the thought she would live a better quality of life than Jemima her lower
class assistant. This is not the case as both women despite their class and wealth both have their
respective problems in life. Although at first thought one would assume some form of wealth being
from the upper classes, however whether intended or not, Wollstonecraft makes the reader come to the
conclusion that no matter her class a woman will not have wealth, not alone anyway. The evidence for

Architectural Bias
Difference in Architectural Recognition due to Historical Bias. As Winston Churchill once said
History is written by the victors . When looking into past events there will always be more than one
side to a story, yet for many centuries the study of history concentrated on the retail of an specific
person or group who would generally impose their own ideas and perspective of the past. This creates
something called historical bias which in term makes most of the historical documents fallacious.
Architectural history is no stranger to this trend; since most of of our records come from Western
historians (Greek, Roman, European). Western movements and architects are depicted as artistic and
influential architecture while Eastern architecture is rarely credited or talked about. The Ottomans had
equally significant contributions to architecture development thanks to architects such as Koca Sinan
(1538 1588). While western architects such as Michelangelo are commonly known as some of the

Tradition and Ritual in Judiasm Essay
The purpose of this research paper will be to examine how Judaism rituals have helped the religion
remained amongst the most prominent in the world. The use of tradition and rituals has been at the
very core of its existence. Birth, adolescent, marriage and death rituals will be used to highlight how
the Judaism way of life is not dependent on the written word but rather the actions of those who
follow this historic Hebrew religion. The paper will begin with a brief outline of Judaism and its
relationship with God and then continue with how the written word of the Torah has laid the basis for
the many traditions still practiced in Judaism.

Some Jews believe God contains the universe while others believe the universe is God. This non
congruency of belief as to who or what is God has led followers of Judaism to have many names for
God or as often found in Jewish literature a reluctance to even write the word God.
What is his name? what shall I say to then? God said to Moses, `I AM

Torah
It is extremely difficult for the average person to understand how a religion that cannot agree on a
name for their God could survive. The survival of Judaism for almost 4,000 years with half of its
history existing without a homeland, a temple or a common geographical location can be credit to
their teaching of the Torah. The word Torah is derived from the verb to guide or to teach 3.
Historically Judaism has survived by the older generation teaching the younger generation the heart of
their faith carried and communicated through the way, the path and the teachings of the Torah.
Torah technically refers to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. These five books are called
Chumash and are divided into 54 portions called a parashah. At least one portion is read in the
synagogues each week. The readings give to each member of the synagogue the basis for their life
practices of the week.
This set of practices is called the Way of Life. The practices and the way the individual connects to
God are called mitzvah. The word itself

Short Speech On Competition
One of the most thrilling peculiarities about life on earth is: it is competitive. The forces of nature
encourage competition, as individuals with exceptional abilities succeed in getting the best life has to
offer; while the rest are left with little or nothing.
Competition, According to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (2006: 294) is a situation in which
people or organizations compete with each other for something that not everyone can have. Education,
on the other hand, is a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges, to
improve knowledge and develop skills (ibid, 2006: 467).
Competition exists in all facets of life. Education is no exception. Education without competition is
akin to eating boiled rice without stew or soup. How distasteful! Hardly would anyone want to eat
such a meal, as it is of less nutritional value. Thus, for education to remain relevant ... Show more

Pupil one: Good evening uncle. Please what is the difference between complacent and complaisant?
Before I could think of responding, another pupil cuts in.
Pupil two: in what situation can we use each of them?
I was a bit startled; as I was not expecting such a question. I have only seen and used complacent;

My response was: do not worry; I would get backed at you tomorrow. I am running late for an

Conflict In Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is the story of a young drumroll please the heroine. (shockingly, she s named Jane Eyre),
who lives with her aunt and cousins, the Reeds, at Gateshead Hall. She s an orphan in nineteenth

Dramatic Ironry In O. Henry s Lamb To The Slaughter
Short stories are an exeptional use of literary elements to an audience of all ages. Lamb to the
Slaugher, by O. Henry, expresses many literary elements such as imagery and dramatic irony. Gift of
the Magi is also an amazing use with foreshadowing and diction. Lamb to the Slaughter uses the
elements better than Gift of the Magi in many different ways, starting with it s precise characters.
Lamb to the slaughter expresses many literary elements, creating a story about Mary Maloney s
experience with her husband. Dramatic irony is a very critical part of the story, especially while
evaluating the situation. Personally, I think it s right here on the premises. Probably right under our
very noses. What you think Jack? (Roald Dahl 9). She killed her husband with a frozen lamb leg after
discussing troubling news that was never revealed. Mary called the police, who were also her husband
s coworkers. The police never figured out what the weapon was or who killed him. Mary asked them
of a favor to eat the lamb leg cooking in the oven, and the weapon was right under their noses when
they were eating. Additionally, the imagery really helps the most crucial part of the story come alive.
Mary walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the
air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head(Roald Dahl 4). The text could
have just said she hit him with a lamb leg, but instead it elaborates and explains how it happened.

Bradbury predicts what technology could do to society through the morals of The Veldt, The
Pedestrian, and There Will Come Soft Rains.
In his story, The Veldt , Bradbury displays the terrors of America s devotion to material goods and
how it affects society s technology usage. The story is centered on an average American family of four
living in a futuristic smart house. The house has a device called the nursery, which is a sort of
metaphor for the television. The nursery is triggered my images in the mind of the controller and
produces holographic images onto the walls of the room. After the pampered Peter and Wendy Hadley

represent the psychological sate of the Hadley family. Bradbury s description of the veldt is so vivid
that it seems as if the children were actually in an African savannah and not daydreaming in the

yet they do not seem to act maturely. This fact is evident in

The Case Of Alexander Vs. Holmes County Board Of Education
The topic I ll be discussing will be the biasedness in media about a particular topic, the US Supreme
Court s decision on the case of Alexander vs. Holmes County Board of Education. The case involved a
previous Supreme Court ruling of Brown vs. Board of Education, where they gave schools to
desegregate public schools with all deliberate speed. 15 years passed and school districts were still
segregated, so the courts gave them till the beginning of the next year, 1970. This gave some schools a
very abrupt shock as they had to conform to the decision. As something that opinionated, it allows
news media to explore and write about such a topic. The following day after the case was presented to
the Supreme Justices, the Dallas Morning News paper gave a few remarks about how the federal
government stood alongside the state of Mississippi in the Supreme Court and pleaded for delay in
further desegregation... 1 The use of the federal government in this situation is to have the reader
sympathize with Mississippi and is even followed by pleaded to further the sympathy. The
government shared the frustrations of black school children... 1 is written to try to balance out the
biased opinion but when children is used instead of students, it creates a belittling picture of their
opposition. The administration s chief civil rights lawyer, Jerris Leonard, was quoted saying that both
the North and South had made substantial breakthroughs in desegregation of schools... but that

Rights at work.
Your rights at work will depend on: * Your statutory rights * Your contract of employment.
Your contract of employment cannot take away rights you have by law. E.g. if your contract states that
you are only entitled to two weeks paid holiday per year when, by law, all full time employees are
entitled to 28 days paid holiday a year then this part of your contract is void and does not apply..
However if your contract gives your greater rights than the law does, (6 weeks paid holiday per year)
then your contract applies. Statutory Rights.
Statutory rights are legal rights based on laws passed by parliament. Nearly all workers, regardless of
the number of hours per week they work, have certain legal rights. There are some workers who are
not entitled to certain statutory rights.
Sometimes an employee only gains a right when they have been employed their their employer for a
certain length of time. Unless you are in the group of workers who are excluded you will have the
following statutory rights: * The right to a written statement of terms of employment within two

Realism In America
Coping in America with Realism
Through the years 1860 to 1900, the Realism literary movement made its way to America. This
movement was a way to entertain the American people from the harsh circumstances they were facing.
Realism became a movement that helped the American people cope with their issues by using real life
circumstances they could relate to.
Realism began in Europe in the 1840s and did not make its way to America until after the Civil War.
American Realism and European Realism shared common goals, such as focusing on the common
person and contradicting society s beliefs, but American Realism branched off with ideas of its own
(Fluck). William Dean Howells is credited for starting the Realism trend in America. He was the

This novel focused on unfortunate characters who were trying to tolerate society s expectations while
finding themselves in the world (James). The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn took place in Missouri,
where many farmers owned slaves to cultivate their crops. Farmers from the lower South made deals
with those of the upper South in hopes to buy their slaves. Many of the slave owners in the upper
South could not resist the offers that were made (Moss). Huckleberry Finn was one of the main
characters in the novel. Huck ran away from his intoxicated, unloving father by faking his own death.
On his journey, Huck met Miss Watson s slave named Jim, who was escaping in fear of being sold to
the deep South. In the novel, realism is displayed by Huck s actions and his colloquialisms. Twain
uses the derogatory term, nigger , often in his writing. This word referred to colored people at the time
period because many white people were racist towards people of color. The white people believed
colored people should not have the same rights as they do. When Huck uses the term nigger , he does
not mean any harm. Being from the South, he picked up the habit of using this word from the
influences around him; this adds to the realistic effect of the time period. Also, Huck and Jim bonded
with each other and created a friendship and, throughout the novel, Jim became the father figure that
Huck never had. This created problems

The Relationship Between Rock And Roll Music
If someone mentions guitar solo to you, what comes to mind? A musical god commanding a stage? A
puffy haired, spandex clad dude making silly faces? Do you see a duck walk? A burning guitar?
The guitar as an instrument evokes so many feelings, even for those not musically inclined. The guitar
solo, is also a topic of heated debates. What makes a good solo? Is it the ability to compliment a song,
or to be a showcase for self indulgence?
And while the guitar solo seems synonymous with rock and roll music, its roots are embedded in jazz
and blues.
Jazz is not only responsible for the birth of cool, but it also gave birth to the guitar solo. Guitars were
originally acoustic. Because of their lack of volume they were rarely seen on a ... Show more content

This design was originally rejected by Gibson. However in 1951 Gibson decided to collaborate with
Les Paul. 1952 brought the world the Gibson Les Paul, and ushered in the rock/pop sound.
Leading into the 1950s there are many who contributed to the formation of what became know as rock
and roll. It is Chuck Berry, however, who many believe personifies rock and roll. His 1955 recording
Maybellene is considered the start of rock and roll guitar, and Johnny B. Goode has one best solos in
rock history.
Meanwhile over in Britain there was a band called The Shadows. They preceded the Beatles by five
years, being active from 1958 1968. They were mainly an instrumental band and hand a distinct
sound. Hank Marvin, lead guitarist had a very clean sound, also used vibrato and echo. The Shadows
were one of the first to be labeled with the surf rock tag. They have influenced the likes of Mark
Knopfler, Neil Young, and Carlos Santana.
The sixties may be rock and rolls golden age. With new solid guitars, huge amplifiers, a new breed of
musicians took to experimenting with different styles, sounds, and effects. Bands such as the
Yardbirds combined blues guitar techniques and pop sensibility that laid the foundation for much of
the 60s guitar sound. The popularity of rock music had one unexpected effect on the guitar. With the
large amount of volume needed, so more and more fans could hear what was being played.

Taking a Look at World War II
THE WAR
The second world war officially began on September 1,1939 when Germany invaded Poland. The
reason given by Hitler for the invasion was the Gleiwitz incident, which saw Poles attack the German
radio station Sender Gleiwitz on August 31, 1939. It later emerged that they were actually SS agents in
disguise and that the attack was done so as to justify the impending invasion of Poland. The Soviet
Union also attacked Poland from the east after signing non aggression pacts with Germany and Japan.
The United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany on September 3, heralding the global
nature of the war.
Poland was overrun in less than a month and Germany aimed to consolidate their advantage by
invading Denmark and Norway for getting access to iron ore shipments from Sweden which was cut
off owing to the naval blockade imposed by the allies .The Soviet Union, in turn, attacked Finland. In
addition, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg also fell to the German forces.
Germany next prepared for the invasion of France. The French had the heavily fortified Maginot line
which they hoped would contain the advancing German troops. However, the Germans unexpectedly
progressed through the Ardennes forest and bypassed the Maginot line, rendering the French defence
useless. Italy also attacked France on June 10,1940 and Paris fell four days later. France was divided
in to German and Italian spheres of influence.

Who Is Jim Carey A Hero
Hello there, this writing piece is about my hero Jim Carrey. In this piece, I will tell you about the
things Jim Carrey has done for me over the years. Firstly, I will be telling you about his battle with
depression and how it affected me.
Last year, around halfway through the year, I had very bad depression. I soon learned that Jim Carrey
also had bad depression at one point. This is when I started fighting depression. When I stopped
having suicidal thoughts. When I started having thoughts like Wait a second, he s not my friend! I m
just one of his cronies! That thought had a few... bad names in it, but were removed due to them being
rude. After I had that thought I decided to completely ignore them. But they had strengths in numbers
He, being the most popular kid in school, had as many friends as you could count. But I, being now
the most unpopular kid in school, had only the kids he had bullied. There was Jawn, my best friend
since kinder, Jonty, who up until that point I had never been friends with, Darcy, who was much taller
than me and hated him with a burning passion, and Bradley, who was like an undercover spy, spying
on what they said about us. The battle continued, and I started doing horrible in school because I didn
t get much sleep, maybe 6 7 hours a night, but I still tried my best, because there were Jim Carrey
movies I haven t watched. But soon enough I was running out of Jim Carrey movies to watch. The
depression started to take over. I started getting

Robert Frost And Modern Poetry
Many poets have shaped the writing style of modern day poetry a bit, but few have done so much as
Robert Frost has in the ways of influencing today s poetry. A man widely renowned and respected in
America, Frost used his shockingly modern writing style to help pave a path for the poems of the
future. By analyzing this great poet, one can only hope to discover the true, raw meaning of the
written words that have had a lasting impact on the views and, more importantly, on the world of
poetry. This essay will explain how Robert Frost used his modernistic writing, his poem s
philosophical nature, and his avid albeit beautiful descriptions of life and all its whims. All of this to
break the mold of classical poetry writing, and to begin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This poem is called The Silent Tent. The most noted and revered line in this poem is actually the first,
She is as in a field a silken tent . This signifies the fact that Frost chose to compare Kay (the woman
he fell for) to a silken tent. Frost may have chosen for the tent to be silk to express the soft beauty of
Kay; after all, silk is normally described as beautiful, soft, and smooth.
As the poem The Silken Tent goes on, the metaphors become complex and more and more are tangled
within one another. This can symbolize how, as time went on, Frost s love for Kay, as well as their
relationship, became more and more complicated. Frost uses ropes as a way to express that Kay is tied
down by her duties, but he then goes on to say that all of the cords are loosely bound . In the last line
of the poem, Frost explains that marriage is like a form of bondage. When married, a person is bound
religiously, socially, and legally. However, Frost states that it is only a slight amount of bondage,
showing that Kay s marriage wasn t constricting or strict. Lastly, by using light weather (such as sunny
summer breeze and summer air ) in this particular poem, Frost evokes a feeling of happiness,
signifying that Kay was a happy woman. Sharing this poem with the world, in its most romantic and
personal form, took courage, causing even more people to flock towards Frost and his writing. All of

I. Voltaire. Candide. New York: Bantam Books, 1959. Candide by Voltaire is a very educational and
informative piece. It was chosen to be read so the students could gain a better understanding of some
of the written pieces in the Enlightenment. Voltaire also makes many references as to what life was
like in the 18th century. Voltaire not only describes the scenery but he gives a description of almost
every type of person. Whether it is lower class, working class, middle class or upper class, there was a
character that the readers see and get a feel of what life was like for them. This book also demonstrates

Candide really teaches us of the class system and structure and we can apply this to our understanding
of the 18th century.
II. Author s Purpose
There are many things that inspired Voltaire to write Candide. The most notably known are the Seven
Years War, the 1755 Libson earthquake, and the publication of Leibniz s Manadology . The earthquake
had a large effect on theories and optimism of Voltaire s age.1 Candide greatly revolves around
optimism and these events and theories developed from other philosophes of the Enlightenment.
Voltaire was hoping to inform and entertain readers simultaneously. Voltaire uses the idea of optimism
and resurrection in a kind of hilarious way that makes it seem impossible. He is informing readers that
people shouldn t believe in this silly things but he is also doing it in a way that will entertain them.
Voltaire also uses the idea of impossibility to draw readers in and it has a greater effect on the message
he is trying to get across. Candide was intended for a critique to most philosophers of the
Enlightenment so the original audience was other philosophes. But Candide has become so popular in
that it is now intended for young adults/adults because it not only teaches but it does it in an
entertaining way. Voltaire portrays many meaningful messages throughout the book. He mainly tires
to exemplify these characteristics: the folly of optimism, the corrupting

Refugee Camps And The United Nations High Commissioner For...
Throughout historical events including modern day occurrences, the conflict between environmental
and humanitarian issues are vouchsafed to be unimportant. Per the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is tasked with
addressing the environmental effects and impacts on refugees, and states that the most significant
problems from refugees [and camps] include deforestation, soil erosions and depletion and pollution
of water resources (UNHCR Social). Yet, after numerous displacements in the Middle East, the world
seemed poised to grant a higher priority to lower issues on the agenda for environmental stability.
However, despite increasing awareness that environmental decline produces and is a byproduct of
conflict, little is known about the linkage between refugee camps and the environment due to a lack of
conceptual clarity. As a result, in the case of refugee camps and their ability to impact our
environment, refugee camps are a global concern that affects everyone and our global ecosystem. By
way of illustration, the dire living conditions in refugee camps [and the harboring diseases that they
can create] are less often a focus for international humanitarian attention. In fact, many who are
uprooted from their homes [during violent conflict] travel countless miles in search of safety [in
refugee camps] only to face new perilous circumstances. Currently, living conditions within refugee
camps are often

Social Media Disadvantages
Social media, or social network is defined by Dictionary.com as an online community of people with a
common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share
information, resources, etc. Social media has become one of the most popular used forms of electronic
communication. It allows users ranging from various age groups to connect and interact with each
other from all across the world. Today, the younger generation can utilize social media as a useful tool.
Younger users can access these networks to communicate and create new friends, access up to date
information and events, and use them as a form of entertainment. However, social media has some
disadvantages that can impact younger users. Social media can affect younger users by being
addictive, impacting education, and can pose dangerous threats. First, younger users can become
addicted to social media. In the 21st century, technology has and still is evolving. Unlike some of the
previous generations, it is common today to see a child interacting with a mobile device. This allows
them to have access to social media websites and apps. Critics believe that social media can be
positive, [enabling] more young people to be creative and innovative (Austin). However, becoming
more active with social media activity can lead into an addiction. For instance, on popular websites
and apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, users have a popular feature called the like button
allowing them to show their support towards different content. For teens, gaining a high number of
likes can illustrate popularity, increasing self esteem. On the other hand, this could lead into an
addiction among individuals. In a brain scan study by Lauren Sherman, lead author of the brain study
and researcher at UCLA, claimed that one of the reasons that teens are such active users on social
media is that they re really sensitive to these likes (Almendrala). Consequently, a user addiction for
likes on social media can impact an individual s self esteem, and lead into time wasted on social media
by the individual. Furthermore, connecting into effecting education. Second, social media can affect
younger user s education. With the access to

The Third Person Narrative Perspective
The third person narrative perspective became popular in the Victorian Era. One would deem the 3rd
person narrator to be more reliable and objective as an external viewer, yet in A High Wind in
Jamaica, written by Richard Hughes, it is evident that the narrator is unreliable and inconsistent. He
becomes a part of the story, unable or unwilling to hide his bias and prejudice. To better understand
the unknown narrator in Hughes book, one must elucidate on the limitations of the narrator s abilities,
his bias against children, and his child like behavior.
The narrator explicitly acknowledges that he is unable to read certain people s minds, allowing
himself to appear vulnerable and relatively powerless to the reader. The first group of the people
whose minds he cannot access are the adults. He states, Jose gave a cry of alarm, sprang onto the cow
s back, and was instantly lowered away just as if the cinema has already been invented. He must have
looked very comic. But what was going on inside of him the while it is difficult to know, admitting
how arduous of a task it is to read adults minds. (Hughes, 110) Although the narrator is best at
accessing Emily s thoughts, that ability is majorly tarnished once Emily gets to the stage of self
realization, and fully stopped once Mr. Mathias, the lawyer, speak to Emily. The narrator writes, What
was in her [Emily s] mind now? I can no longer read Emily s deeper thoughts, or handle their cords.

The Cores Of Confucianism
Introduction
From the 6th century to 221 BC, the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States period, the
Ancient China experienced a lengthy chaos. Nonetheless, in such bloody era, the brilliant Chinese
philosophers sprang up and started a Golden Age of philosophy. People call this phenomenon as the
Contention of a Hundred schools of Thoughts. The philosophers discussed about the best way for a
country to survive, for an emperor to rule and for people to live. Those thoughts impacted the lifestyle
and social consciousness not only at that time but even in the following thousands of years, especially
for the Confucianism which was exclusively adopted in Han dynasty and rule the China for two
thousand years. In this essay, I will focus on the Confucianism, discuss the central doctrines.
The Cores of Confucianism
As we know During the Spring and Autumn period, China s feudal system gradually became
significant irrelevant. The emperor of Zhou dynasty had real control over only a small royal demesne
centered on their capital Luoyi near modern day Luoyang. During the early part of the Zhou dynasty
period, royal relatives and generals had been given control over fiefdoms in an effort to maintain Zhou
authority over vast territory. As the power of the Zhou kings waned, these fiefdoms became ... Show

Tradition vs. Modernity, Amy Kramer
England and India never did understand one another. (Prasad 37)
Undilute East had always been too much for the West; and soulful East always came lap dog fashion
to the West, mutually asking to be not too little and not too much, but just right. (Prasad 37)
The struggle of individuals caught between tradition and modernity, or between
India and the west, is a very common theme in Indian literature. This struggle is evident in Nectar in a
Sieve, as Rukmani often finds herself battling between her traditional views and opinions, and the
various modern forces that seem to be taking over her life.

Rukmani also finds herself struggling as she witnesses the breakdown of traditional Indian roles and
practices. Firstly, Rukmani comes to realize that none of her sons are going to follow in Nathan s
footsteps and work on the land for a living. This causes Nathan to feel as if the children in whom he
lives have forsaken him because it is traditional practice for the sons of a farmer to work alongside
their father and take over working the land once their father passes on (Srivastava 38).
Secondly, the crumbling of well established traditions is evident to Rukmani when she learns of the
marriage of her son Murugan. Rukmani was brought up with the widespread practice of arranged
marriage; however, with the sudden displacement of many village people into cities, the practice of
arranged marriage was having a setback
(Srivastava 9). After Murugan s move to the city to become a servant, he arranges his own marriage.
In addition to this, Murugan deserts his wife and takes another woman without any compunction

coordination, and situational awareness were limited (Moynihan, 2007). Agencies have highly trained

Sharia Law And Islamic Law
Sharia, also called Sharia Law or Islamic Law, is a religious law forming part of the Islamic tradition,
and it is derived from the religious precepts of Islam. Despite of the fact that Sharia oppresses women

Sharia, also called Sharia Law or Islamic Law, is a religious law forming part of the Islamic tradition,
and it came from the religious precepts of Islam. Sharia is often portrayed as a medieval legal system
used by religious zealots to oppress women and deny human rights for Muslims and non Muslims
alike. (Esposito, 40) Islamic law in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, and the Taliban s
Afghanistan has required to restrict women s rights.
Regardless of this negative characteristic of Sharia, why do so many Muslims regard Sharia so
positively and think of it as central to their faith? One of the reasons is that Sharia has functioned as a
positive source of guidance, a law whose principles and values have provided a moral compass for
individuals and society. (Esposito, 41)
The reason they want Sharia so much is much easier to understand if one realizes that many Muslims
across the world concerns much about how modern secularism has challenged faith and family values.
Muslims see secularism as undermining personal and public morality, weakening marriage as an
institution, and leading to rampant divorce, sexual promiscuity, dysfunctional families, and alcohol
and drug abuse. (Esposito, 41)
Now we can go specifically into Sharia Law, which is the foundation of religious politics. There are
two categories of Sharia law that we can break down to. They are

  • 3. The United States And Communist Russia The United States and Communist Russia endured a complicated relationship in the first half of the 20th century. In the early 1940 s the U.S. had encouraged an alliance with the Soviets against their common enemy, Nazi Germany. This short lived accord began to deteriorate as WW II ended. By 1947 U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union had shifted from one of cooperation to a policy of containment. In 1949, when the Soviets tested their first atomic bomb, it was a widely held belief in the U.S. that the Russians were an untrustworthy enemy with plans to invade the United States. The Committee had powers to subpoena and hold witnesses in contempt of congress, punishable by imprisonment. Following WW II, as anti communist sentiment rose in the U.S., the Committee enjoyed strong popular support. Being a Communist was not a crime so most of the people convicted served sentences for perjury or contempt of Congress. Very few TV shows paved the way for what television is today and, after spending ten years on the air, Friends is one of those few. Friends was so groundbreaking because of its unique writing, its cast chemistry, and its ability to resonate with the people in its era. Friends consists of six friends, Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe, living in New York and discovering themselves. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The writing of the series played a large role in making it so iconic but making it even more iconic was, perhaps, it s ensemble. The chemistry, or lack there of, between cast members has been the downfall of many television series, but that was never a problem for Friends. Not only was each actor perfect for his or her character, but each actor was also perfect for each other. The show worked best when all six characters were on the screen. If, for example, Joey had a date, it was rarely shown on screen. Instead, what was shown was the six friends discussing the date after the fact. Many supporting characters, such as love interests, were written off because it seemed as if they somehow go in the way. Monica and Chandler both had many love interests and yet, they ended up marrying each other. All ten seasons consisted of the same cast, and no one ever got tired of seeing the same six faces on their TV screen. During season one each cast member was making a different salary but by the end of the season they were negotiating their pay to be equal, which was unprecedented at the time. The chemistry was so great that it spilled over into their real lives. All six cast members remain close friends to this day. Jennifer Aniston is the godmother to Courtney Cox s daughter and while each has gone on to star in other television series, they will still frequently appear on each other s show. ... Direct torque control (DTC) method is used to control the torque (finally speed) in variable frequency drives of three phase AC electric motors. From the measured voltage and current of the motor an estimate of the motor s magnetic flux and torque is calculated. Integrating the stator voltages, stator flux linkage is estimated. Cross product of measured motor current vector and estimated stator flux linkage vector results in estimated torque. The estimated flux magnitude and torque are then compared with their reference values. If either the estimated flux or torque deviates from the reference more than allowed limits, the transistors of the variable frequency drive are turned OFF and ON in such a way that the flux and torque errors will return in their tolerant bands as fast as possible. Thus direct torque control is one form of the hysteresis control. The method requires only the stator resistance to estimate the stator flux and torque. The basic DTC scheme [1] consists of two comparators with specified bandwidth, switching table, voltage source inverter, flux and torque estimation block. Like every control method has some advantages and disadvantages, DTC method has too. Some of the advantages are lower parameters dependency, making ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Wrongs Of Woman By Mary Wollstonecraft Mary Wollstonecraft is hailed as a prominent figure in feminist history. Although viewed in her time as a controversial figure, her works since have been highly regarded amongst feminist historians. Throughout Mary s life the literature she produced, she produced with societal issues in the forefront of her mind. Throughout her literature, Caroline Franklin explains: The need for and loss of maternal love would become a recurring theme in Wollstonecraft s fiction. Wollstonecraft in her numerous publications has clearly provided evidence to show her thoughts and opinion on current matters varying from political to social. Her stance on women in regard to social standing, education and issues such as marriage seep out of her writings. Wollstonecraft s second novel titled The wrongs of woman contains the narrative from two women Maria and Jemima. The two women are from two different social standings. The interesting notion in the novel is that Maria who is of higher social standing provokes a reader to the thought she would live a better quality of life than Jemima her lower class assistant. This is not the case as both women despite their class and wealth both have their respective problems in life. Although at first thought one would assume some form of wealth being from the upper classes, however whether intended or not, Wollstonecraft makes the reader come to the conclusion that no matter her class a woman will not have wealth, not alone anyway. When looking into past events there will always be more than one side to a story, yet for many centuries the study of history concentrated on the retail of an specific person or group who would generally impose their own ideas and perspective of the past. This creates something called historical bias which in term makes most of the historical documents fallacious. Architectural history is no stranger to this trend; since most of of our records come from Western historians (Greek, Roman, European). Western movements and architects are depicted as artistic and influential architecture while Eastern architecture is rarely credited or talked about. God said to Moses, `I AM WHO I AM Torah It is extremely difficult for the average person to understand how a religion that cannot agree on a name for their God could survive. The survival of Judaism for almost 4,000 years with half of its history existing without a homeland, a temple or a common geographical location can be credit to their teaching of the Torah. The word Torah is derived from the verb to guide or to teach 3. The forces of nature encourage competition, as individuals with exceptional abilities succeed in getting the best life has to offer; while the rest are left with little or nothing. Lamb to the Slaughter uses the elements better than Gift of the Magi in many different ways, starting with it s precise characters. Lamb to the slaughter expresses many literary elements, creating a story about Mary Maloney s experience with her husband. Dramatic irony is a very critical part of the story, especially while evaluating the situation. Personally, I think it s right here on the premises. Probably right under our very noses. What you think Jack? (Roald Dahl 9). She killed her husband with a frozen lamb leg after discussing troubling news that was never revealed. Mary called the police, who were also her husband s coworkers. The police never figured out what the weapon was or who killed him. Mary asked them of a favor to eat the lamb leg cooking in the oven, and the weapon was right under their noses when they were eating. Additionally, the imagery really helps the most crucial part of the story come alive. Mary walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head(Roald Dahl 4). Frost may have chosen for the tent to be silk to express the soft beauty of Kay; after all, silk is normally described as beautiful, soft, and smooth. As the poem The Silken Tent goes on, the metaphors become complex and more and more are tangled within one another. This can symbolize how, as time went on, Frost s love for Kay, as well as their relationship, became more and more complicated. Frost uses ropes as a way to express that Kay is tied down by her duties, but he then goes on to say that all of the cords are loosely bound . In the last line of the poem, Frost explains that marriage is like a form of bondage. When married, a person is bound religiously, socially, and legally. However, Frost states that it is only a slight amount of bondage, showing that Kay s marriage wasn t constricting or strict. Lastly, by using light weather (such as sunny summer breeze and summer air ) in this particular poem, Frost evokes a feeling of happiness, signifying that Kay was a happy woman. Candide really teaches us of the class system and structure and we can apply this to our understanding of the 18th century. II. Author s Purpose There are many things that inspired Voltaire to write Candide. The most notably known are the Seven Years War, the 1755 Libson earthquake, and the publication of Leibniz s Manadology . The earthquake had a large effect on theories and optimism of Voltaire s age.1 Candide greatly revolves around optimism and these events and theories developed from other philosophes of the Enlightenment. Voltaire was hoping to inform and entertain readers simultaneously. Voltaire uses the idea of optimism and resurrection in a kind of hilarious way that makes it seem impossible. He is informing readers that people shouldn t believe in this silly things but he is also doing it in a way that will entertain them. Voltaire also uses the idea of impossibility to draw readers in and it has a greater effect on the message he is trying to get across. Candide was intended for a critique to most philosophers of the Enlightenment so the original audience was other philosophes. But Candide has become so popular in that it is now intended for young adults/adults because it not only teaches but it does it in an entertaining way. Voltaire portrays many meaningful messages throughout the book. He mainly tires to exemplify these characteristics: the folly of optimism, the corrupting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout historical events including modern day occurrences, the conflict between environmental and humanitarian issues are vouchsafed to be unimportant. Per the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is tasked with addressing the environmental effects and impacts on refugees, and states that the most significant problems from refugees [and camps] include deforestation, soil erosions and depletion and pollution of water resources (UNHCR Social). Yet, after numerous displacements in the Middle East, the world seemed poised to grant a higher priority to lower issues on the agenda for environmental stability. However, despite increasing awareness that environmental decline produces and is a byproduct of conflict, little is known about the linkage between refugee camps and the environment due to a lack of conceptual clarity. As a result, in the case of refugee camps and their ability to impact our environment, refugee camps are a global concern that affects everyone and our global ecosystem. By way of illustration, the dire living conditions in refugee camps [and the harboring diseases that they can create] are less often a focus for international humanitarian attention. In fact, many who are uprooted from their homes [during violent conflict] travel countless miles in search of safety [in refugee camps] only to face new perilous circumstances. Social Media Disadvantages Social media, or social network is defined by Dictionary.com as an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc. Social media has become one of the most popular used forms of electronic communication. It allows users ranging from various age groups to connect and interact with each other from all across the world. Today, the younger generation can utilize social media as a useful tool. Younger users can access these networks to communicate and create new friends, access up to date information and events, and use them as a form of entertainment. However, social media has some disadvantages that can impact younger users. Social media can affect younger users by being addictive, impacting education, and can pose dangerous threats. First, younger users can become addicted to social media. In the 21st century, technology has and still is evolving. Unlike some of the previous generations, it is common today to see a child interacting with a mobile device. This allows them to have access to social media websites and apps. Critics believe that social media can be positive, [enabling] more young people to be creative and innovative (Austin). However, becoming more active with social media activity can lead into an addiction. For instance, on popular websites and apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, users have a popular feature called the like button allowing them to show their support towards different content. For teens, gaining a high number of likes can illustrate popularity, increasing self esteem. On the other hand, this could lead into an addiction among individuals. In a brain scan study by Lauren Sherman, lead author of the brain study and researcher at UCLA, claimed that one of the reasons that teens are such active users on social media is that they re really sensitive to these likes (Almendrala). Consequently, a user addiction for likes on social media can impact an individual s self esteem, and lead into time wasted on social media by the individual. • 30. The Third Person Narrative Perspective The third person narrative perspective became popular in the Victorian Era. One would deem the 3rd person narrator to be more reliable and objective as an external viewer, yet in A High Wind in Jamaica, written by Richard Hughes, it is evident that the narrator is unreliable and inconsistent. He becomes a part of the story, unable or unwilling to hide his bias and prejudice. To better understand the unknown narrator in Hughes book, one must elucidate on the limitations of the narrator s abilities, his bias against children, and his child like behavior. The narrator explicitly acknowledges that he is unable to read certain people s minds, allowing himself to appear vulnerable and relatively powerless to the reader. The first group of the people whose minds he cannot access are the adults. He states, Jose gave a cry of alarm, sprang onto the cow s back, and was instantly lowered away just as if the cinema has already been invented. He must have looked very comic. But what was going on inside of him the while it is difficult to know, admitting how arduous of a task it is to read adults minds. (Hughes, 110) Although the narrator is best at accessing Emily s thoughts, that ability is majorly tarnished once Emily gets to the stage of self realization, and fully stopped once Mr. Mathias, the lawyer, speak to Emily. The narrator writes, What was in her [Emily s] mind now? I can no longer read Emily s deeper thoughts, or handle their cords. Henceforth we must be content to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Firstly, Rukmani comes to realize that none of her sons are going to follow in Nathan s footsteps and work on the land for a living. (Esposito, 40) Islamic law in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, and the Taliban s Afghanistan has required to restrict women s rights. Regardless of this negative characteristic of Sharia, why do so many Muslims regard Sharia so positively and think of it as central to their faith? One of the reasons is that Sharia has functioned as a positive source of guidance, a law whose principles and values have provided a moral compass for individuals and society. (Esposito, 41) The reason they want Sharia so much is much easier to understand if one realizes that many Muslims across the world concerns much about how modern secularism has challenged faith and family values.
