Meaningless Relationships in T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land
Meaningless Relationships in T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land T.S. Eliot wrote The Waste Land in
reference to the state of Europe after World War I. The poem paints a bleak, hopeless view of the state
of human and political affairs. Eliot refers to London, which was previously prosperous and
progressive, as an Unreal City. The language of the poem is chaotic and fragmented. The setting of the
poem is sterile and barren producing nothing, not even children. Lust which is prevalent throughout
The Waste Land causes destruction and confusion. Lines 230 through 256 characterize the absence of
passion in life. The Waste Land challenges the reader to re evaluate the value of relationships by
illustrating a world with empty and meaningless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This rhyme scheme creates a sing song property within the stanzas, which completely contradicts the
poems appalling content. The meticulously orchestrated sentence structure and slant rhyme within the
poem creates the pleasant, flowing sound of euphony. The flow of words, unobstructed by harsh
sounds, contradicts the vile nature of the stanzas. These poetic devices further illustrate the indifferent
attitude and nonchalant manner in which the people of Europe, post World War I, wasted their lives.
Class separation and focus on accumulating wealth is another means in which the people of The Waste
Land squander their time and attention. The female is a typist, which is not a particularly lucrative
profession. The typist has so little money that she does not even own a bed. The young man works in
real estate and clearly brings in more money than the female. The phrase silk hat on a Bradford
millionaire refers to the worthless accumulation of large wealth and the impractical objects the
wealthy spends their money on. The female within these stanzas is depicted in a scrutinizing manner.
The typist has invited the young man over expected guest . The woman is bored and tired, completely
un amused by the young man. During her assault she is too complacent to react. When he leaves she
barely notices Hardly Aware of her departed lover; . She is goes through the motions of her life with

Essay about Central Line Clinical Practice Guideline and...
Central Line Clinical Practice Guideline Rational Central venous catheters (CVCs) are frequently used
in intensive care units (ICUs) for a number of reasons (measure central venous pressure, when
peripheral veins are unable to be accessed, administration of medications/therapies and aspiration of
blood samples) (Conroy, 2006, p. 98). Patients in this environment already have an increased risk of
infection because of their treatments. Patient treatments commonly involve invasive devices or
interventions (major surgery), antibiotic therapy (raises the risk of bacterial resistance) while steroid,
chemotherapy and radiation therapy all suppress the immune system (Hatler, Hebden, Kaler, Zack,
2010). NSWHealth (2005) found that 20 40% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means aseptic technique and sterile gloves should be used for insertion and care of a CVC.
Aseptic technique is critically important to protect patients from CLABSIs; infections are caused by
either intrinsic (e.g. patients own flora) or extrinsic (e.g. surrounding environment) pathogens. Asepsis
therefore removes patients skin flora and ensures flora picked up from either other patients or the
surrounding environment is not introduced into the patient (Mollee et al., 2011). Raad et al. (1994)
found in a randomised trial that CLABSIs were 6.3 times higher in a control group then those who had
their CVC inserted under maximal barrier precautions (consisting of mask, cap, sterile gloves, gown,
large drape). These findings were replicated by Abi‐Said et al. (1999) who also found that if strict
aseptic techniques were adhered too during dressing changes, in addition to close monitoring of
patients there was a decrease in bloodstream infection rates. As described above CLABSIs are more
common when aseptic techniques at the time of insertion have not been observed. Contamination of
catheters by skin flora at the time of insertion is one of the risks for developing a subsequent CLABSI.
Therefore CVCs need to be replaced within 48hrs if asepsis cannot be guaranteed for insertion
(LeMaster et al., 2010). For insertion and during care of a CVC

Symbolism In Stephen King s Movie It
Due to how interested I am with this captivating film, I once again decided to research a review on the
movie IT directed by Andy Muschiettie. Specifically looking for an article discussing symbolism I
stumbled upon Stephen King s It is the rare monster movie with too much monster written by Tahsa
Robinson. Collectively, the passage discusses many elements of symbols in the film, but ultimately
leads back to how the title monster makes appearance too often (Robinson). However, I disagree with
this statement because the creature is presented to remind the audience that It is always there;
terrorizing its prey before consumption as one would season a piece of meat before a meal. This
directing style of presenting the monster in the beginning and often throughout is different from that
of other movie that keep the monster hidden to build suspense and fear. Having It on screen in
multiple scenes allows terror to build for the victims or, in the case of the film, for the victims to
develop bravery in the face of fear. I do agree with the author s analysis on the aspects of the film and
the symbols presented to the audience. In particular, I whole heartedly agree with what she states
about one of the adolescent characters: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Social And Economical Factors On Youth Essay
I have chosen to research into the social and economical factors that may influence a youth s
likelihood to engage in delinquency as I believe that understanding the factors underpinning youth
offending may help to reduce youth crime levels, as preventive measures can be aimed at the distinct
root causes recognised. I have chosen to particularly look at the link between the social factor of
education in terms of low school attainment and the wider effect on the economy through looking at
youth unemployment and offending. I believe these social and economical factors are inextricably
linked therefore I hypothesise that low school attainment leads to increases in youth crime levels due
to youths not acquiring the necessary skills to allow a successful entrance to the labour market.
Methodology:
In carrying out this literature review I have engaged in secondary research in order to provide me with
significant qualitative and quantitative data on this given topic. I collected a range of sources through
library searches where I aimed to research previous studies through the use of the internet to access
online resources, books and journals. Upon doing so I found a few books that encompassed the social
and economical factors I specifically chose to review although I found many websites that had
information on the social economical factors that may affect delinquency.
Findings:
Education Low school attainment:
All sources reviewed agreed that there is a correlation

Enlightenment Thinkers Idea Of Progress Essay
The idea of progress is the idea that advances in technology, science, and social organization can
produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become better in terms of quality
of life , or social progress, through economic development, modernization, and the application of
science and technology. The assumption is that the process will happen once people apply their reason
and skills. This ideal emerged primarily during the Enlightenment era in the 18th century. Significant
movements in this period were Diderot s Encyclopedia, which carried on the campaign against
authority and superstition, and the French Revolution. The Enlightenment thinkers expressed great
hope in the potential of humanity for resolving or eliminating economic, social and political ills. In the
nineteenth century, the idea of progress was united by Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer by their
theories of evolution. Social Darwinism, which was Spencer s version, ... Show more content on

Nationalist sentiment had reached levels of great intensity during the last decades of the 19th Century.
A sense of cultural and technological superiority was pervasive among the Great Powers. All believed
that their traditions, histories, cultural and technical achievements, and national destinies were
superior to those of their opponents. Imperialist ambitions, international/diplomatic resentments,
competition in an increasingly expanding industrial sphere, and a sense of military superiority, all
informed the nationalist spirit of the age. The principle of nationalism was not new, but it had reached
new heights of intensity in the nineteenth century, and this fervor generally carried over into the start

Why Is Lying Wrong
Why is lying bad?
Ashwin
A lot of people would say, in fact most people would say lying is very wrong. It can destroy and
diminish trust, bonds and relationships. Honesty is a quality in life. Lies are viewed as morally wrong
everywhere due to the fact that they can hurt a person or have a very negative impact on someone.
Christian views on this matter include the fact that lying should not take place as it abuses Gods gift to
humans, communication. However can I lie ever be justified. Are there circumstances where a lie can
be good?
When is lying wrong?

Augustine (a famous philosopher)
Augustine believed that some lies could be pardoned and justified, and that there were in fact
occasions when lying would be the right thing to do.
He grouped lies into 8 classes, depending on how difficult it was to pardon them. Here s his list, with
the least forgivable lies at the top:
Lies told in teaching religion
Lies which hurt someone and help nobody
Lies which hurt someone but benefit someone else
Lies told for the pleasure of deceiving someone
Lies told to please others in conversation
Lies which hurt nobody and benefit someone
Lies which hurt nobody and benefit someone by keeping open the possibility of their repentance
Lies which hurt nobody and protect a person from physical defilement
Christian belief
The christian view on lying is the fact that God gave us human beings a gift and that gift is,
communication. We should not abuse this gift by hurting others with our lives depending on how big
or how small. Lies are bad and can really have a bad and heavy impact on one s life. God gave human
beings speech so that they could make their thoughts known to each other; therefore using speech to
deceive people is a sin, because it s using speech to do the opposite of what God

Kateri Tekakwitha was born in 1656 to an Algonquian mother and Mohawk father. Tekakwitha was

more about Christianity under her mentor Anastasia, who taught her about the practice of repenting for

Uneven Distribution of Life in America
The wealth gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow in America as it has in recent
decades. Wealth distribution in America has not been this unequal since 1928, the year before the
Great Depression started. The richest four hundred people in America have more money than the one
hundred fifty million poorest Americans combined. The wealth gap needs to shrink due to the negative
repercussions of wealth inequality. Wealth inequality leads to inequality in other aspects of life.
Uneven distribution of wealth stunts economic growth as well as limits socio economic mobility. It
also leads to a shorter lifespan for the less wealthy.
In recent years, the issue of this uneven distribution of wealth in America has come to the forefront.
President Obama even dedicated part of his last State of the Union address to this problem. Statistics
revealing the distribution of wealth to each social class is easily obtainable for the general public. But,
the uneven distribution of wealth is not a problem that developed overnight. The gap in wealth
between the rich and the poor has been growing for decades. Uneven wealth distribution became an
issue once before in America, in the 1920 s. A small group of people were beginning to point out that
most of the wealth in America was in the hands of a few wealthy men. This idea was not shared by the
vast majority though. A New York Times article that was written in 1921 dismisses the uneven wealth
distribution talk as socialist propaganda .

The Puritans and the Pilgrims: What made the Puritans different?
Many Americans are familiar with the two groups, Puritans and Pilgrims, but most don t know the
differences between them. The Puritans began a group of people that were members of the Anglican
Church. Their goals were to rid the church of any remaining influences from Catholicism. They were
mainly English Protestants of the 16th century who wanted to follow the Calvinist model of religion
rather than the ever present Catholicism. Several Puritans lost faith in the Anglican Church and felt it
could never be completely purified from all Catholic influence; as a result they abandoned the Church
and completely separated themselves from the Anglican religion. These Puritans where referred to as
Separatists. The remaining majority of Puritans inherited the title of non separating Puritans, over time
these two groups would become increasingly hostile toward each other.
The Puritans wanted to remain a part of the English establishment, and work toward reforming the
church from within. All the while they immigrating to New England, they still held onto their English
heritage, and their main emphasis in forming a new colony was to be a biblical witness so to say, the
city on a hill . Their objective was to set a shining example ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although they still considered themselves English as well, they were determined to form their own
spiritual and political identities. Their faith put more of an emphasis on individual righteousness
before God, instead of the Puritan form, that put more of an emphasis on corporate and community
righteousness. The Puritans were energized as a group by the constant persecution of their faith. As a
result they developed an entire system for defining and explaining their doctrine concerning

way the Electoral College works is by forcing candidates to focus on four states like Ohio, Florida,
Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Election is winners take all, so if candidate gets fifty percent of the
population in that state to for him he wins the whole state entirely . That means winning by abundance
of citizen votes is no better than winning by a single vote. This is why candidates are ignore states like

To Kill A Mockingbird Point Of View Essay
Scout s unique point of view, which is an unbiased first person with two perspectives, is developed in
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee through the use of a flashback structure, plot development, and
the specific point of view. To start off, the frame story within the flashback structure helps shape the
story s point of view. In this specific frame story, an older Scout is positively looking back on her
childhood, with her younger self telling the experiences that led to her brother, Jem, breaking his arm.
At the beginning of the novel, she said, When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on
them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident (Lee 3). This quote specifically takes
the readers to a moment where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If this had been told from older Scout s perspective, she would have known what she had done and
directly stated it, rather than indirectly describing what she saw. From older Scout s perspective at the
beginning of the novel, she spoke with her brother about their childhood much later in life and said,
Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it (Lee 6). Scout, at her older
age, thought in depth about what Maycomb was like for her more than she did when she was younger,
specifically seen in the words tired and old . Not only that, but older Scout spoke in the past tense,
something younger Scout would generally not do since she focused on what was occurring around her
rather than contemplating what already happened. The diction used in both perspectives helps to make
the point of view more unique by showing the innocent differences between the two related yet
different perspectives. These specific examples help support the unique point of view in the book and
show how it is shaped through the structure, developed through the plot, and related through the
diction used in both

Metaphysical Realm Of Garbage
The Metaphysical Realm of Garbage My volunteer experience at Howling Timbers included cleaning
and preparing meals for the animals using expired produce donated from local grocery stores. My
work started with sorting the new shipments of goods into categories and rotating them with the old,
molding fruits and vegetables that would get used in the evening. During meal preparation, I cut off
the fuzzy, moldy, slimy, and decomposing parts of the fruit and vegetables and put the salvageable
portions into food bins for the horses, pigs, donkeys and sugar gliders, the scraps into a compost pile. I
asked Brenda if larger corporations gave Howling Timbers their expired produce and learned that the
food donations at Howling Timbers come from local grocery stores. Brenda explains to the managers
at these larger grocers that the food they receive is only for animal consumption. Still, they deny her
the food and dispose of their expired goods in the dumpster out of sight, out of mind. Slavoj Zizek

from our world. When you go to the toilet, shit disappears. You flush it. Of course, rationally you
know it s there in canalization and so on, but at a certain level of your most elementary experience, it
disappears from your world (Zizek, 2008). In a metaphorical sense, thoughts are like garbage.

Mp Model Of Multi-Model
The climate models are deficient in simulating the seasonal cycle of the ocean ML. Some models in
CMIP5 (Gupta et al. 2009) and CMIP3 (Jang et al. 2011) simulate deeper winter MLDs than observed,
while some others in CMIP5 underestimate the MLD in winter (Sallée et al. 2013) and summer
(Huang et al. 2014). However, the CMIP5 models (Taylor et al. 2012) have improved its
representation of MLD but still some of the models misrepresent the MLD (Knutti et al. 2013; Huang

characteristics. The annual mean MLD and the three MLD regimes for the multi model mean are
displayed in figure 3.20 and 3.21 respectively. Compared to the observations (see figure 3.2 and 3.3),
the CMIP5 multi model mean shows a fairly good representation of the spatial distribution of annual
mean MLD and the different MLD regimes. The model mean simulated the extra tropical seasonal and
Constant deep MLD regimes as in the observations, but the Constant shallow regimes are confined
only to the eastern equatorial Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean . Though, the CMIP5 models simulate
coherent MLD structure it differs significantly in terms of the values. The global mean MLD

observed ( 41m for GECCO2). However, the mean MLD for other ocean reanalysis product NCEP

Reinforcement Schedules Work
Explain how reinforcement schedules work using everyday examples. Reinforcement means to
strengthen, and is used in psychology to refer to anything stimulus which strengthens or increases the
probability of a specific response. For example, if you want your child to do something more and
more, you may give her a treat every time she does that. Thus the child will eventually know that if I
do this, it will be followed by a treat and the more you praise her the more she repeats that. This might
be cleaning the table after every meal that she takes and you give her praise or a tin of yoghurt for
cleaning the table. Another example of reinforcement could be something happening at work when
you know that a promotion comes after a hard work. This is done in different forms of reinforcements
which are positive and negative reinforcement, punishment and extinction. There are also different
reinforcement schedules which are fixed and variable ratios and fixed and variable intervals. All these
are used in our day to day living when people are being rewarded or punished for different responses.
This was done by BF Skinner through his experiments which gave him a result that any behaviour is
followed by a consequence. (http://www.allpsych.com/tests/psychology/learning.html) Reinforcement
schedules rely on the principles of operant conditioning which is a type of associative learning in
which a person s behaviour changes according to consequences associated with that behaviour.

Hermann Hesse s Siddharth The Natural Motion Of A River
Emely Gonzalez
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
AP Literature Pd.3
Topic 3
The natural motion of a river can vary. For the majority of its existence, a river s effortless flow can be
tranquilizing; but it could also evoke destruction with its rushing dynamics. This double edge concept
is the simple layout of life, for we encounter high points, as well as low points. The river also holds
two principles: creation and destruction. The symbolic nature of the current enables Siddhartha, the
protagonist in the novel entitled Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, to use the river as a guide to
reconstruct himself. Within many episodes of his life, Siddhartha encounters the river and consumes
the teachings of it. In the process of finding himself, Siddhartha lost a part of his individuality.
However, he was able to regain his loss through the river s guidance; it was his savior. Siddhartha
desired to join the Samanas, with his best friend, Govinda to pursue enlightenment. When he told his
father, a Brahmin, his plan to do so, he rejected his request. Siddhartha was defiant, and stood still
with his arms crossed for several hours until his request was granted. Challenging his father s words
shows how he was accustomed to having everything in his favor. Once his knees grew weak,
Siddhartha s father gave in, allowing him to go into the forest and become a Samana. Upon joining the
wanderers , Siddhartha and Govinda abandoned the Samana life because it required one to lose

consist of cedar and oak trees that can work as protection from predators or animals lurking around. In
addition, the rolling landscapes/lowlands contain granite rocks that create a beautiful scenery and
make it easier to walk along when the road becomes in available to drive on.

First of all, the climate and the vegetation will work hand in hand in your survival. Victoria is a place
that has a more moderate, dryer climate in the summer and mild, average amount of precipitation. This
is important to the vegetation because it s not too cold where you can t grow anything (seeds, flowers,
herbs etc.) and it s not too hot in certain areas where your crops will burn out and leave you hungry.
Then, the landscape and the climate work together varying from the availability of water to the
population of people fleeing there. Victoria has a very beautiful scenery and the climate works with it
so that you can feel comfortable when appreciating the view. Although it is one of the major tourist
attractions, but not many people spend a lot of their time in the forests on the mountains, therefore
giving you an advantage of space and utilities. In addition the climate works so that the water that is
near you will not diminish and can access it easily by simply walking down to the fjords. Keep in
mind that soil and vegetation also work hand in hand because depending on where you decide to
camp, there will be different types of soil that can affect your planting (I.e. Leached soil). If you re
looking to plant more seeds and herbs look out for sandy loam, which is an even mixture of all the
types of soils and will be easiest to attend to by composting any fruit or nut items you have. Lastly the
climate and the soil work well together because although it can be quite dry in Victoria, there is
enough precipitation to treat the soil instead of damaging (for example having too much precipitation
or not having

The Decline Of The Reformation
The fact that the Renaissance took place before the Protestant Reformation was not a coincidence.
One of the major promoters of the Reformation was the availability of the Bible in the common
language of the people throughout Europe. Another was the growing number of people who were able
to read the Bible for themselves. Both the availability of printed material and the increasing literacy
rates were direct consequences of the Renaissance and thus fostered the Reformation that followed.
Without the events that took place during the Renaissance the Reformation may never have taken
place.
The Renaissance period was marked by a renewed interest in Classical culture, art, learning and
science. The Reformation was a religious movement which challenged the authority of the pope and
the Catholic Church, which until that time had been the only organized form of Christianity in Western
Europe. The Reformation began when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses, his list of grievances
against the Catholic Church s practices, to the door of a church. Luther s main disagreement with the
Church was over indulgences, the sale by the Papacy of remission of penalties imposed by God on
souls in Purgatory. He attached the theory behind indulgences that the Pope could make grants to the
faithful from the treasure of merits accumulated by Christ and the saints over and above what they had
needed for their own salvation.
The grievances that Luther had with the Church had been greatly nurtured by

Junior Research Paper on Wrestling
The History Of Wrestling My first year of wrestling was in high school my junior year. I wrestled at
Forbush High School in the 106/113 pound weight class throughout this winter sport. Before, I must
admit that I did at many different times think that the sport of wrestling was the most dumb and
homosexual sport ever. One of my friends came up to me a few months after and asked me what I
thought about wrestling. I told him like I said to everyone else, It s the most homosexual sport ever
created. He said, When you re out there wrestling, you don t think about it. I challenge you to come
out this year and wrestle and tell me if you think about anything being homosexual out there. I
accepted his challenge. My first day of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A new era of wrestling was born called the WWWF (World Wide Wrestling Federation). The WWWF
was founded by Vince McMahon Sr. and Toots Mondt in the year of 1963 when Capital Wrestling
broke away from the NWA. The WWWF performed in the cities of New York, Philadelphia,
Pittsburgh, Boston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, and other smaller towns as well (Strongbow). A man
named Buddy Rogers was selected to be the very first WWWF champion in 1963. He was veteran
wrestler at the time and was defeated by Bruno Sammartino after only holding the title for only a few
months. Sammartino held the title until 1971 until he was defeated by Ivan Koloff, who later on
defeated Koloff in 1973 (Strongbow). The company was renamed from WWWF to WWF (World
Wrestling Federation) in 1979 ( Online World Of Wrestling ). Vince McMahon Sr. sold the company
to his son Vince McMahon Jr. in 1983 (Cohen). Vince set out to conquer the wrestling world with his
new company. One of Vince s first moves was signing legend Hulk Hogan who is still considered one
of the greatest WWF wrestlers to this very day. He signed Hulk Hogan as an ambassador for his
wrestling brand. Vince had found out it was costing him a lot of money to be on TV. and needed to do
something big for his company. In 1985 the WWF made their first impact by Vince getting Mr. T the
main event match for the first Wrestlemania event; the WWF was unstoppable.

Research Paper On Hezbollah
The Islamic terrorist group that I have selected for this discussion is Hezbollah. The reason is that it is
one of the best funded, organized and lethal terrorists groups in the world. They have attacked several
American facilities in the Middle East, embassies, strategic military points, etc. They have been
funded by the government of Iran but they are also supported by other Islamic groups and nations;
Hamas, one of the most important political parties in Palestine also supports Hezbollah and considers
it its military arm. To the American military bases that surround Iran and that are ready to defend the
American interests in the region, Hezbollah represents one of the biggest concerns (Lahoud, 2010).
Iran already has a considerable military

Hudson Bay Segmentation
The marketing approach taken by Hudson Bay is that of segment marketing. In a culturally diverse
country such as Canada, the only way to satisfy consumer needs as well as maximize profit; would be
to appeal to a variety of different groups. Whether it be to different sexual orientations, cultural
differences or just personal needs and interest. Hudson Bay demonstrates this by carrying an array of
products ranging from formal wear, skin care products, cosmetics, celebrity clothing lines, designer
labels and accessories just to name a few varieties. Their target market is mainly young adolescences,
men, women and women with children. With the different array of product lines that Hudson Bay
carry s, it almost makes them the ultimate one stop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As two separate companies, they have established a different approach towards the market, however
with the right research and evaluation, Rousteing and The Bay have beautifully managed to make both
sides collide with success. They have managed to design ready to wear for different target groups, for
example, women s outerwear shoes, men s business attire, jewellery, as well as the latest Balmain
Army collection inspired by Rousteing himself. They have made the price range of the products in the
listed categories reasonable and affordable for premium quality clothing, accessories and footwear for
both genders that are quality and price conscious. Also, in Toronto and Vancouver, The Bay has
launched a showroom called The Room that features some of Balmain s hottest but not so retail
friendly designer clothing from Rousteing s runway collection. With the stratospheric prices, these
items are obviously in display for the more sophisticated young female adults that completely
disregard the price tag when they see something they genuinely adore. However, this was also an
intelligent way for Rousteing and The Bay to promote their collection by giving the people of middle
class families to feel and take a closer glimpse of some high quality handiwork. This makes the
women of the demographic target market want to know what else Balmain has in store at The Bay,
that is of similar quality, but with a more affordable

The Tension Of Racial Separation
The tension of racial separation is a driving factor in Ralph Ellison s Battle Royal . In the early 1940 s
the Deep South decided to create Jim Crow laws in which were intended to prevent blacks from
voting. For the entirety of the narrators life he has being living acceptingly and conforming to these
laws. The narrator states On my graduation day I delivered an oration in which I showed that humility
was the secret, indeed, the very essence of progress. (Not that I believed this how could I,
remembering my grandfather? I only believed that it worked) (228). This quote defines an era in
which blacks were more afraid of disruption then of the corruption surrounding them. After his
graduation day speech he was invited to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believed that by beating the narrator he would relieve himself of the pain the white have pushed
upon him. We can see this when the narrator asked why are you fighting me and he responds, For me,
sonofabitch (231). Rather than dispensing his anger upon his oppressor the brute of his attack was at
his own community. This is exactly what the white men wanted. After the fight was over and Tatlock
won the boys were thrown into a group and called over to collect their earnings for the night. To
deepen the wedge separating them they throw the money on a rug. Unknowingly the boys scram in a
frenzy to collect all the pay they can obtain, only to learn that they rug is electrocuted. Once again
they were put at war with each other and struggled to obtain what they all truly wanted. The naked
woman is heavily symbolic of the lack of worth the black community holds during this time period.
She is the apple in the Garden of Eden, the forbidden fruit of America, the item blacks see every day
but will never be allowed to obtain. She is a dream, an everlasting but never obtainable goal. Just the
sight of this never obtainable goal frightens the strongest and bravest of the boys in the room, many
want to run away. All are horrified of what the whites will do if they see them staring at the woman. I
believe that this woman is a symbolism of the blacks frightening away at the sight of an

The filters consist of finely crushed coal, about one meter in depth, and sand, half a meter in depth.
This provides the final step in the treatment process.
Process flow step 6 Chlorination/dechlorination Chlorine is added to the effluent to disinfect any
remaining microbiological pathogens; this takes at least half an hour. The effluent is then treated with
sulphur dioxide gas to remove excess chlorine, which would be harmful to the river ecosystem. The
effluent is then ready for discharge into the river.
Process flow step 7 Solids separation and incineration The sludge and scum, removed in step 2 of the
process, are dealt with separately. The sludge is stored in a sludge holding tank where it is then
pumped to the centrifuge at a controlled rate. Polymers are added to the sludge to aid in the thickening
of the sludge during this process. Water is separated from the sludge by spinning in a centrifuge to
form a thick, muddy substance known as cake , a process known as dewatering . The cake is then
conveyed to the furnace where it is incinerated at 750 1000°C to produce Agri Ash. The scum,
however, is stored in a heated tank to thicken it prior to its transfer to the furnace, where it is also
incinerated. Approximately 700,000 litres of sludge is treated each day to produce 47 tonnes of
dewatered solids. After

Consequences Of The Morality Of Education InThe Adventures...
Mark Twain strongly believed that society [should not] let schooling interfere with [one s] education (
Mark Twain Quotes ). The history that is commonly taught in today s school systems is full of
conceived notions of censorship and the forgotten brutality of mankind against his brethren. Through
his work, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain elaborates on these evil tendencies of mankind,
bringing forth crucial arguments that teach lessons of humanity to the children of today s society. For
both the educational and moral good of mankind, this history must not be forgotten; in the same
manner, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn must not be erased from the nation s school curriculum for
its contemporary relevance.
Unfortunately, throughout history, Huckleberry Finn has faced many opponents who rejected the
novel on the ethical grounds of profanity, racism, and intolerance (Smith 183; Karolides 266). When
the novel was released in 1884, it was a hit, but the now American classic s first adversaries came a
few decades later. Surprisingly, the first challengers to dismiss Huck Finn were actually white. They
feared Huck would set a bad example for the young white boys of the 1930s due to his improper
English and poor behavior flaws (Fikes 241). The first institution to ban Huck Finn was the Concord
Public Library, which referred to Twain s work as trash suitable only for the slums (Karolides 398).
This sparked a chain of challenges across the nation, even to other countries.

Tennyson s In Memoriam Essay
Tennyson s In Memoriam
In Memoriam is an elegy to Tennyson s friend Arthur Hallam, but bears the hallmark of its mid
nineteenth century context, the locus classicus of the science and religion debate. Upon reflection,
Hallam s tragic death has proved to be an event that provoked Tennyson s embarkation upon a much
more ambitious poetic project than conventional Miltonian elegy, involving meditation upon the
profoundest questions faced by mankind. Scientific advancements, most notably in the fields of
geology and biology, challenged the beliefs that form the foundation of Christianity: the belief in a
beneficent God responsible for creation and ensuing superintendence and the belief in man s immortal
soul. By the mid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are Tennyson?s trip through Hades. By personifying Nature and placing ?her? in opposition to
God as a distinct power, Tennyson seems to imply a polytheistic belief that two, not one, seats of
power exist. In these passages it seems that Tennyson perceives Nature to have greater influence over
Earth and mankind. At the close of LV, God appears as distant and hidden in darkness, leaving man in
a state analogous with that of a child ? weak, vulnerable and desirous of care: he falls ?upon the great
world?s altar stairs That slope thro? darkness up to God,? (lines 14 15). Metaphorically darkness
represents the secrecy surrounding God and the answers that he holds, a motif that is reprised at the
close of LVI: ?behind the veil, behind the veil.? The repetition of the clause emphasises Tennyson?s
frustrations. Indeed God seems so distant and hidden that Tennyson?s faith in his existence is
weakened and he is only able to ?feel? and ?faintly trust,? not resolutely know. The lack of conviction
conveyed here through Tennyson?s semantic choices illustrates an emergence of disillusion with
eutheistic belief. The existence of the Christian conception of a loving god is called into question, and
it is implicitly asserted that the conception of Nature conveyed in these passages may be the true,
ditheistic, conception of God. That ?of fifty seeds she often brings but one to bear? (LV line 7 8)
envisages a large picture of organic existence, despairing of

A Space At Ucsf Rough Draft
Space at UCSF Rough Draft UC San Francisco is committed to living out their mission of advancing
health worldwide. Fulfilling this mission demands UCSF s growth, but certain restrictions hinder this
expansion, specifically space limitations. As UCSF develops a building plan for campus renovations,
they are considering three main issues in regards to space limitations. First, San Francisco sits on a
peninsula surrounded by water, which limits the growth of the city, thus directly influencing UCSF.
Second, certain campus buildings need to undergo seismic renovations for safety reasons. Finally,
construction efforts will require a stable financial budget. The financial budget influences UCSF,
because they are a public institution and as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main campuses include: Parnassus, which is located in the center of the city; Mission Bay and
Mount Zion. UCSF is affiliated with two hospitals: Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and
Trauma Center and San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. UCSF also owns and preserves
Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve, which is a 61 acre open space and extra campus housing. Parnassus
Campus Parnassus, which served as the original headquarters of the UCSF campus, is enduring
arguably the greatest space constraints out of the campus locations. The Parnassus campus covers six
blocks and is composed of faculty, students, staff and those involved in research, patient care and
educational events. Surrounded by a residential area, Parnassus is limited from growing outward and
growing upward, out of respect to the surrounding neighborhood. The UC Regents set forth campus
boundaries on the upward growth of Parnassus, referred to as the space limit. Currently, Parnassus
exceeds the space limit by 3.7%, and UCSF has established a long range plan to reduce that amount.
Parnassus buildings that will be effected by the long range plan include: the Clinical Sciences
Building (CSB), UC Hall and the Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics (LPPH C) site. The
proposed deadline for renovations on the CSB is late 2018 early 2019 and UC Hall is 2020. The CSB
will begin bidding renovation soon

Sherlock Adler Personality
Irene Adler, a classic femme fatale, is a pivotal character in Holmes` stories. Sherlock defines her as
The Woman , distinguishing her from other female characters towards whom he was totally
indifferent. This how Dr. Watson describes Sherlock`s attitude to Adler:
...In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion
akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise
but admirably balanced mind... Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high power
lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was

Comparing The Office And Parks And Recreation
The Office vs. Parks and Recreation NBC s The Office and Parks and Recreation are quite similar, but
yet so different. Both of these TV shows are comedies. They also both take place in the workplace,
specifically an office. The Office is set in Scranton, Pennsylvania at an office called Dunder Mifflin
Paper Company. Parks and Recreation is set in Pawnee,Indiana in the City Hall building where the
Parks and Recreation office is located. You know what they say. Fool me once, strike one, but fool me
twice... strike three. This was said by the great and wise Michael Scott. Well, maybe not wise... but he
is great! Michael Scott is a fictional character in The Office. Scott plays the protagonist in the show.

Beginning with both being the protagonist in their shows. Both Michael and Leslie show a
compassionate and caring heart towards most everyone. Michael cares for his friends, as Leslie cares
for her friends and the great city of Pawnee. As seen in the quotes above, both say just about whatever
comes to their mind, which keeps the show very humorous. Although Michael can be a bit more crude
with his jokes. The Office is more negative with their humor than Parks and Recreation. A lot of the
humor on The Office comes from making fun of or bringing down the other characters. This kind of a
comedy makes for a funny and intriguing TV show. Also The Office has a bigger cast. Throughout the
10 seasons, the cast gets bigger. Some of the characters leave throughout the seasons and new ones
will come in. Parks and Recreation is a smaller cast, and does not have as many characters that come
and go through the seasons. Both of these comedies are very similar, but yet they are so different. Both
The Office and Parks and Recreation are so unique in their own way, and are very good TV shows. I
am bias towards The Office though. I believe it is a better quality TV show. To me The Office is more
humorous than Parks and

  • 2. Meaningless Relationships in T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land Meaningless Relationships in T.S. Eliot s The Waste Land T.S. Eliot wrote The Waste Land in reference to the state of Europe after World War I. The poem paints a bleak, hopeless view of the state of human and political affairs. Eliot refers to London, which was previously prosperous and progressive, as an Unreal City. The language of the poem is chaotic and fragmented. The setting of the poem is sterile and barren producing nothing, not even children. Lust which is prevalent throughout The Waste Land causes destruction and confusion. Lines 230 through 256 characterize the absence of passion in life. The Waste Land challenges the reader to re evaluate the value of relationships by illustrating a world with empty and meaningless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This rhyme scheme creates a sing song property within the stanzas, which completely contradicts the poems appalling content. The meticulously orchestrated sentence structure and slant rhyme within the poem creates the pleasant, flowing sound of euphony. The flow of words, unobstructed by harsh sounds, contradicts the vile nature of the stanzas. These poetic devices further illustrate the indifferent attitude and nonchalant manner in which the people of Europe, post World War I, wasted their lives. Class separation and focus on accumulating wealth is another means in which the people of The Waste Land squander their time and attention. The female is a typist, which is not a particularly lucrative profession. The typist has so little money that she does not even own a bed. The young man works in real estate and clearly brings in more money than the female. The phrase silk hat on a Bradford millionaire refers to the worthless accumulation of large wealth and the impractical objects the wealthy spends their money on. The female within these stanzas is depicted in a scrutinizing manner. The typist has invited the young man over expected guest . The woman is bored and tired, completely un amused by the young man. During her assault she is too complacent to react. When he leaves she barely notices Hardly Aware of her departed lover; . She is goes through the motions of her life with no ... • 3. Essay about Central Line Clinical Practice Guideline and... Central Line Clinical Practice Guideline Rational Central venous catheters (CVCs) are frequently used in intensive care units (ICUs) for a number of reasons (measure central venous pressure, when peripheral veins are unable to be accessed, administration of medications/therapies and aspiration of blood samples) (Conroy, 2006, p. 98). Patients in this environment already have an increased risk of infection because of their treatments. Patient treatments commonly involve invasive devices or interventions (major surgery), antibiotic therapy (raises the risk of bacterial resistance) while steroid, chemotherapy and radiation therapy all suppress the immune system (Hatler, Hebden, Kaler, Zack, 2010). NSWHealth (2005) found that 20 40% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means aseptic technique and sterile gloves should be used for insertion and care of a CVC. Aseptic technique is critically important to protect patients from CLABSIs; infections are caused by either intrinsic (e.g. patients own flora) or extrinsic (e.g. surrounding environment) pathogens. Asepsis therefore removes patients skin flora and ensures flora picked up from either other patients or the surrounding environment is not introduced into the patient (Mollee et al., 2011). Raad et al. (1994) found in a randomised trial that CLABSIs were 6.3 times higher in a control group then those who had their CVC inserted under maximal barrier precautions (consisting of mask, cap, sterile gloves, gown, large drape). These findings were replicated by Abi‐Said et al. (1999) who also found that if strict aseptic techniques were adhered too during dressing changes, in addition to close monitoring of patients there was a decrease in bloodstream infection rates. As described above CLABSIs are more common when aseptic techniques at the time of insertion have not been observed. Contamination of catheters by skin flora at the time of insertion is one of the risks for developing a subsequent CLABSI. Therefore CVCs need to be replaced within 48hrs if asepsis cannot be guaranteed for insertion (LeMaster et al., 2010). For insertion and during care of a CVC ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Symbolism In Stephen King s Movie It Due to how interested I am with this captivating film, I once again decided to research a review on the movie IT directed by Andy Muschiettie. Specifically looking for an article discussing symbolism I stumbled upon Stephen King s It is the rare monster movie with too much monster written by Tahsa Robinson. Collectively, the passage discusses many elements of symbols in the film, but ultimately leads back to how the title monster makes appearance too often (Robinson). However, I disagree with this statement because the creature is presented to remind the audience that It is always there; terrorizing its prey before consumption as one would season a piece of meat before a meal. This directing style of presenting the monster in the beginning and often throughout is different from that of other movie that keep the monster hidden to build suspense and fear. Having It on screen in multiple scenes allows terror to build for the victims or, in the case of the film, for the victims to develop bravery in the face of fear. I do agree with the author s analysis on the aspects of the film and the symbols presented to the audience. In particular, I whole heartedly agree with what she states about one of the adolescent characters: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Social And Economical Factors On Youth Essay I have chosen to research into the social and economical factors that may influence a youth s likelihood to engage in delinquency as I believe that understanding the factors underpinning youth offending may help to reduce youth crime levels, as preventive measures can be aimed at the distinct root causes recognised. I have chosen to particularly look at the link between the social factor of education in terms of low school attainment and the wider effect on the economy through looking at youth unemployment and offending. I believe these social and economical factors are inextricably linked therefore I hypothesise that low school attainment leads to increases in youth crime levels due to youths not acquiring the necessary skills to allow a successful entrance to the labour market. Methodology: In carrying out this literature review I have engaged in secondary research in order to provide me with significant qualitative and quantitative data on this given topic. I collected a range of sources through library searches where I aimed to research previous studies through the use of the internet to access online resources, books and journals. Upon doing so I found a few books that encompassed the social and economical factors I specifically chose to review although I found many websites that had information on the social economical factors that may affect delinquency. Findings: Education Low school attainment: All sources reviewed agreed that there is a correlation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Enlightenment Thinkers Idea Of Progress Essay The idea of progress is the idea that advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become better in terms of quality of life , or social progress, through economic development, modernization, and the application of science and technology. The assumption is that the process will happen once people apply their reason and skills. This ideal emerged primarily during the Enlightenment era in the 18th century. Significant movements in this period were Diderot s Encyclopedia, which carried on the campaign against authority and superstition, and the French Revolution. The Enlightenment thinkers expressed great hope in the potential of humanity for resolving or eliminating economic, social and political ills. In the nineteenth century, the idea of progress was united by Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer by their theories of evolution. Social Darwinism, which was Spencer s version, ... • 10. Uneven Distribution of Life in America The wealth gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow in America as it has in recent decades. Wealth distribution in America has not been this unequal since 1928, the year before the Great Depression started. The richest four hundred people in America have more money than the one hundred fifty million poorest Americans combined. The wealth gap needs to shrink due to the negative repercussions of wealth inequality. Wealth inequality leads to inequality in other aspects of life. Uneven distribution of wealth stunts economic growth as well as limits socio economic mobility. It also leads to a shorter lifespan for the less wealthy. In recent years, the issue of this uneven distribution of wealth in America has come to the forefront. President Obama even dedicated part of his last State of the Union address to this problem. Statistics revealing the distribution of wealth to each social class is easily obtainable for the general public. But, the uneven distribution of wealth is not a problem that developed overnight. The gap in wealth between the rich and the poor has been growing for decades. Uneven wealth distribution became an issue once before in America, in the 1920 s. A small group of people were beginning to point out that most of the wealth in America was in the hands of a few wealthy men. This idea was not shared by the vast majority though. • 11. Puritans And The Pilgrims Research Paper Eric Swain Professor Wells HIS 121 9 August 2014 The Puritans and the Pilgrims: What made the Puritans different? Many Americans are familiar with the two groups, Puritans and Pilgrims, but most don t know the differences between them. The Puritans began a group of people that were members of the Anglican Church. Their goals were to rid the church of any remaining influences from Catholicism. They were mainly English Protestants of the 16th century who wanted to follow the Calvinist model of religion rather than the ever present Catholicism. Several Puritans lost faith in the Anglican Church and felt it could never be completely purified from all Catholic influence; as a result they abandoned the Church and completely separated themselves from the Anglican religion. These Puritans where referred to as Separatists. The remaining majority of Puritans inherited the title of non separating Puritans, over time these two groups would become increasingly hostile toward each other. The Puritans wanted to remain a part of the English establishment, and work toward reforming the church from within. All the while they immigrating to New England, they still held onto their English heritage, and their main emphasis in forming a new colony was to be a biblical witness so to say, the city on a hill . This shows that Electoral college doesn t make candidates care about smaller states. The way the Electoral College works is by forcing candidates to focus on four states like Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The Election is winners take all, so if candidate gets fifty percent of the population in that state to for him he wins the whole state entirely . To Kill A Mockingbird Point Of View Essay Scout s unique point of view, which is an unbiased first person with two perspectives, is developed in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee through the use of a flashback structure, plot development, and the specific point of view. To start off, the frame story within the flashback structure helps shape the story s point of view. In this specific frame story, an older Scout is positively looking back on her childhood, with her younger self telling the experiences that led to her brother, Jem, breaking his arm. At the beginning of the novel, she said, When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident (Lee 3). From older Scout s perspective at the beginning of the novel, she spoke with her brother about their childhood much later in life and said, Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it (Lee 6). Scout, at her older age, thought in depth about what Maycomb was like for her more than she did when she was younger, specifically seen in the words tired and old . Not only that, but older Scout spoke in the past tense, something younger Scout would generally not do since she focused on what was occurring around her rather than contemplating what already happened. The diction used in both perspectives helps to make the point of view more unique by showing the innocent differences between the two related yet different perspectives. My work started with sorting the new shipments of goods into categories and rotating them with the old, molding fruits and vegetables that would get used in the evening. During meal preparation, I cut off the fuzzy, moldy, slimy, and decomposing parts of the fruit and vegetables and put the salvageable portions into food bins for the horses, pigs, donkeys and sugar gliders, the scraps into a compost pile. I asked Brenda if larger corporations gave Howling Timbers their expired produce and learned that the food donations at Howling Timbers come from local grocery stores. Brenda explains to the managers at these larger grocers that the food they receive is only for animal consumption. Still, they deny her the food and dispose of their expired goods in the dumpster out of sight, out of mind. Slavoj Zizek says in Examined Life that Part of our daily perception of reality is that this [shit/garbage] disappears from our world. When you go to the toilet, shit disappears. You flush it. Of course, rationally you know it s there in canalization and so on, but at a certain level of your most elementary experience, it disappears from your world (Zizek, 2008). Some models in CMIP5 (Gupta et al. 2009) and CMIP3 (Jang et al. 2011) simulate deeper winter MLDs than observed, while some others in CMIP5 underestimate the MLD in winter (Sallée et al. 2013) and summer (Huang et al. 2014). However, the CMIP5 models (Taylor et al. 2012) have improved its representation of MLD but still some of the models misrepresent the MLD (Knutti et al. 2013; Huang et al. 2014). The annual mean MLD and the three MLD regimes for the multi model mean are displayed in figure 3.20 and 3.21 respectively. Compared to the observations (see figure 3.2 and 3.3), the CMIP5 multi model mean shows a fairly good representation of the spatial distribution of annual mean MLD and the different MLD regimes. The model mean simulated the extra tropical seasonal and Constant deep MLD regimes as in the observations, but the Constant shallow regimes are confined only to the eastern equatorial Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean . Though, the CMIP5 models simulate coherent MLD structure it differs significantly in terms of the values. • 19. Reinforcement Schedules Work Explain how reinforcement schedules work using everyday examples. Reinforcement means to strengthen, and is used in psychology to refer to anything stimulus which strengthens or increases the probability of a specific response. For example, if you want your child to do something more and more, you may give her a treat every time she does that. Thus the child will eventually know that if I do this, it will be followed by a treat and the more you praise her the more she repeats that. This might be cleaning the table after every meal that she takes and you give her praise or a tin of yoghurt for cleaning the table. Another example of reinforcement could be something happening at work when you know that a promotion comes after a hard work. This is done in different forms of reinforcements which are positive and negative reinforcement, punishment and extinction. There are also different reinforcement schedules which are fixed and variable ratios and fixed and variable intervals. All these are used in our day to day living when people are being rewarded or punished for different responses. This was done by BF Skinner through his experiments which gave him a result that any behaviour is followed by a consequence. (http://www.allpsych.com/tests/psychology/learning.html) Reinforcement schedules rely on the principles of operant conditioning which is a type of associative learning in which a person s behaviour changes according to consequences associated with that behaviour. ... For the majority of its existence, a river s effortless flow can be tranquilizing; but it could also evoke destruction with its rushing dynamics. This double edge concept is the simple layout of life, for we encounter high points, as well as low points. The river also holds two principles: creation and destruction. The symbolic nature of the current enables Siddhartha, the protagonist in the novel entitled Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, to use the river as a guide to reconstruct himself. Within many episodes of his life, Siddhartha encounters the river and consumes the teachings of it. In the process of finding himself, Siddhartha lost a part of his individuality. However, he was able to regain his loss through the river s guidance; it was his savior. Siddhartha desired to join the Samanas, with his best friend, Govinda to pursue enlightenment. When he told his father, a Brahmin, his plan to do so, he rejected his request. Siddhartha was defiant, and stood still with his arms crossed for several hours until his request was granted. Challenging his father s words shows how he was accustomed to having everything in his favor. Once his knees grew weak, Siddhartha s father gave in, allowing him to go into the forest and become a Samana. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, the climate and the vegetation will work hand in hand in your survival. Victoria is a place that has a more moderate, dryer climate in the summer and mild, average amount of precipitation. This is important to the vegetation because it s not too cold where you can t grow anything (seeds, flowers, herbs etc.) and it s not too hot in certain areas where your crops will burn out and leave you hungry. Then, the landscape and the climate work together varying from the availability of water to the population of people fleeing there. Victoria has a very beautiful scenery and the climate works with it so that you can feel comfortable when appreciating the view. Although it is one of the major tourist attractions, but not many people spend a lot of their time in the forests on the mountains, therefore giving you an advantage of space and utilities. In addition the climate works so that the water that is near you will not diminish and can access it easily by simply walking down to the fjords. Keep in mind that soil and vegetation also work hand in hand because depending on where you decide to camp, there will be different types of soil that can affect your planting (I.e. Leached soil). If you re looking to plant more seeds and herbs look out for sandy loam, which is an even mixture of all the types of soils and will be easiest to attend to by composting any fruit or nut items you have. • 22. The Decline Of The Reformation The fact that the Renaissance took place before the Protestant Reformation was not a coincidence. One of the major promoters of the Reformation was the availability of the Bible in the common language of the people throughout Europe. Another was the growing number of people who were able to read the Bible for themselves. Both the availability of printed material and the increasing literacy rates were direct consequences of the Renaissance and thus fostered the Reformation that followed. Without the events that took place during the Renaissance the Reformation may never have taken place. The Renaissance period was marked by a renewed interest in Classical culture, art, learning and science. The Reformation was a religious movement which challenged the authority of the pope and the Catholic Church, which until that time had been the only organized form of Christianity in Western Europe. The Reformation began when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses, his list of grievances against the Catholic Church s practices, to the door of a church. Luther s main disagreement with the Church was over indulgences, the sale by the Papacy of remission of penalties imposed by God on souls in Purgatory. He attached the theory behind indulgences that the Pope could make grants to the faithful from the treasure of merits accumulated by Christ and the saints over and above what they had needed for their own salvation. The history that is commonly taught in today s school systems is full of conceived notions of censorship and the forgotten brutality of mankind against his brethren. Through his work, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain elaborates on these evil tendencies of mankind, bringing forth crucial arguments that teach lessons of humanity to the children of today s society. For both the educational and moral good of mankind, this history must not be forgotten; in the same manner, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn must not be erased from the nation s school curriculum for its contemporary relevance. Unfortunately, throughout history, Huckleberry Finn has faced many opponents who rejected the novel on the ethical grounds of profanity, racism, and intolerance (Smith 183; Karolides 266). When the novel was released in 1884, it was a hit, but the now American classic s first adversaries came a few decades later. Surprisingly, the first challengers to dismiss Huck Finn were actually white. They feared Huck would set a bad example for the young white boys of the 1930s due to his improper English and poor behavior flaws (Fikes 241). The first institution to ban Huck Finn was the Concord Public Library, which referred to Twain s work as trash suitable only for the slums (Karolides 398). In these passages it seems that Tennyson perceives Nature to have greater influence over Earth and mankind. At the close of LV, God appears as distant and hidden in darkness, leaving man in a state analogous with that of a child ? weak, vulnerable and desirous of care: he falls ?upon the great world?s altar stairs That slope thro? darkness up to God,? (lines 14 15). Metaphorically darkness represents the secrecy surrounding God and the answers that he holds, a motif that is reprised at the close of LVI: ?behind the veil, behind the veil.? The repetition of the clause emphasises Tennyson?s frustrations. Indeed God seems so distant and hidden that Tennyson?s faith in his existence is weakened and he is only able to ?feel? and ?faintly trust,? not resolutely know. The lack of conviction conveyed here through Tennyson?s semantic choices illustrates an emergence of disillusion with eutheistic belief. The existence of the Christian conception of a loving god is called into question, and it is implicitly asserted that the conception of Nature conveyed in these passages may be the true, ditheistic, conception of God.
