The current refugee scene is facing many complications. The challenges these individuals face
while moving to a new country has encouraged us to focus our project on providing refugees with
the assistance they need to succeed. Exploring different areas such as connections and services
through an interview process has given us a better insight into what path to take to better
accommodate refugees with the challenges in their current country. When conducting interviews
our group kept in mind the practicality of the refugee s situation. Since for many individuals, this
time in their lives is emotional we decided to reach out to the individuals that help refugees.
When deciding who to contact for interviews we kept all our options open, communicating with
immigration officers, program managers, University of Waterloo volunteers and teachers etc.

I consider the city of Rowland Heights an ethnic space within Southern California because it
corresponds with my interpretation of an ethnic space. To elaborate, an ethnic space is an area,
such as a city or town, that has a prominent culture reflecting the prevalent ethnic group within that
area. During my adolescence, I lived in the city of La Puente, which is primarily Hispanic/Latino,
however, as I aged, I began to attend school within Rowland Heights, which is primarily Asian.

The goal of Hinduism is to break the cycle of rebirth, in attempt to attain salvation. On the other
hand, the goal of the Islamic religion is to fulfill their responsibility of life by following the
Quran and Hadith, and to live life with compassion towards all of Gods creations. When it comes
to the place of worship, both religions differ in regards to statues and pictures. Shiva Vishnu
contained many statues of their gods and it is a common practice to have these images. Although,
ISOM does not contain any drawings, paintings, or statues regarding their gods. God cannot be
seen, but sees all. They only have calligraphy and the temple is angled in such a way that it faces
Mecca.
Islam comes from the Arabic root word of Salema which translates to peace, submission, and
obedience. Islam is submission to the will of God and obedience to His rules. The Muslims follow
the Qur an, and traditions of the Holy Last messenger Muhammad, called Sunnah which is found in
