Overview of the Fall Prevention Program
The Fall Prevention Program Executive Summary The Purpose of the Program According to the
Joint Commission Resources JCR (2005), there is no universally accepted definition of a fall.
Thus several definitions have been floated over time in an attempt to define the same. One such
definition of a fall is an untoward event that results in the patient or resident coming to rest
unintentionally on the ground or another lower surface (Joint Commission Resources, 2005).
Falls are regarded common causes of injury at every age. However, it is important to note that for
seniors, falls can have serious consequences. This is more so the case given that a fall can bring
about pain, trauma, or even death. With that in mind, the primary purpose of this program remains
the reduction of falls and hence the aversion of related injuries amongst the concerned patients. Of
key importance remains the identification of patients who appear to be at high risk of falling. This
way, appropriate strategies can be developed to reduce the injuries related to inpatient falls. The
Target Population/Audience According to the Joint Commission Resources (2005), falls are the
В¦primary etiology of accidental deaths in persons over the age of 65. However, it is important to
note that in the opinion of JCR, the injury rate happens to be highest amongst those aged 85 years
and above. To highlight the seriousness of the issue, the commission further points out that the
number of deaths associated with

Bear, Lion s Digestive System
A similarity that is present between the bear, lion, and koalas digestive system is that they all have
small intestines. In all of the animals digestive system they have small intestine which absorbs all
the nutrients and minerals from the food that they have eaten. Small intestine, or small bowel, is a
hollow tube about 20 feet long that runs from the stomachto the beginning of the large intestine.
The small intestinebreaks down food from the stomach and absorbs much of the nutrients from the
food.
The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. The main role of the duodenum is to complete
the first phase of digestion. In this section of the intestine, food from the stomach is mixed with
enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the gallbladder. The enzymes and bile help break down
food.
The jejunum is the second part of the small intestine. After food is broken down in the duodenum, it
moves to the jejunum, where the inside walls absorb the food s nutrients. The inside walls of the
jejunum have many circular folds, which make its surface area large enough to absorb all of the
nutrients that the body needs.
The ileum is the third part of the small intestine. It absorbs bile acids, which are returned to the
liver to be made into more bile, then stored in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The oesophagus is a muscular tube, about 25cm long, with a sphincter (valve) at each end. Its
function is to transport food and fluid, after being swallowed, from the mouth to the stomach. No
absorption of nutrients takes place in the oesophagus. A mouthful of food which has been chewed
and swallowed is called a bolus. This is propelled from the pharynx (throat) into the oesophagus, and
is swept towards the stomach in peristaltic waves. These muscular contractions are involuntary, and
cannot normally be felt. When food is not passing through, the oesophagus is folded in, or

Summary Of Edwidge Danticat s Breath, Eyes, Memory
In Breath, Eyes, Memory, Edwidge Danticat explores the conflict that exist between Sophie and
her mother, Martine. Sophie states, There s a difference between what a person wants and what
s good for them (Danticat 72) because what Sophie wants for herself is different than what her
mother believes is good for her. Martine s belief of what is good for her daughter are based on
her own life experiences and what she has learned from them. Danticat makes it clear in the text
that Martine believes Sophie should study and have a passion for becoming a doctor in the
future and she is to remain a virgin until marriage. However, Sophie does not exactly follow the
guidelines of what her mother believes to be good for her. Sophie does what she wants as she

Sophie show that she wants to live out what were once her dreams through her daughter. This is
supported when Martine states you have a chance to become the kind of women Tanta Atie and
I have always wanted to be. If you make something of yourself in life, we will succeed. You can
raise our heads (Danticat 44). Danticat further supports this when Sophie is first introduced to
Marc. He offers to take Martine and Sophie to dinner at a Haitian restaurant. While they are there
Marc asks Sophie what she has planned for her future. She announces that she would like to
become a secretary one day, but her mother declares that she is too young you are going to be a

to fulfill that dream on her own, she now tries to force her dream upon Sophie. However, Martine

Essay on Why the American Civil War Lasted for Longer Than...
Why the American Civil War lasted for longer than 90 days The North had expected their war
with the south to last for no more than 90 days. They not only had more men up in the north but
they had more resources as well. Now why couldn t they defeat the south? I have to say it is due to
the incompetence of the north s generals commanding the army, and the army itself. On April 15,
1861, President Lincoln called on the states to provide 75,000 militia men for 90 days to put down
the rebellion of the south.
On the other hand, the south had the state of Virginia on its side; this gave them a better chance of
victory. It was the home of Robert E. Lee, a brave leader who had been Lincoln s choice for
commanding the union army. When Virginia... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The union went completely unprepared into this war. Where as the confederate soldiers were
country men who were used to the outdoors and were skilled in firing guns. The first major
battle of the Civil War was fought in Virginia, near the Manassas; this battle later became known
as The Battle of Bull Run. At the beginning of the five hour battle the Union soldiers had the
Confederates on the retreat, except for one brigade commanded by General Jackson. Due to
Jackson s ability to hold his ground and his stubbornness, the men saw him and his militia to
resemble a stone wall; hence he earned the nickname Stonewall Jackson. Thanks to Jackson the
Confederates were able to hold out until General Johnston showed up with 9000 reinforcements to
help out General Beauregard. The arrival changed the course of the battle and soon the Union
soldiers were fleeing back to Washington. However, because of the disorganization of Beauregard s
army, they could not pursue McDowell any further.
Rico 3
The battle proved that this was not going to be a one sided war for either side, as was predicted.
The casualties soared to 2,900 killed, wounded, captured, or missing for McDowell s army and
2,000 for Beauregard s. The battle spurred a sense of victory in the South, pushing them on, and in
the North a feeling for revenge.
If the union had simply prepared their army for battle rather than just jump into a war, they
probably would have won the

The Main Cause Of Gun Violence In The United States
Gun Violence
Gun violence is a very serious and complex issue. This issue has been taking place for many years
all over the United States. Gun violence has no real prevention and no simple way of being
stopped. Every single day more than one person s life is taken by a gun. Some of these deaths are
caused by senseless acts of violence while others occur by accident. Gun violence is one of the
main causes of death in America, some say guns are used for protection but others use guns for
their own negative agenda.
In America there is over 300 million guns throughout the country. Many of the people who own
one of those guns do not have a license. In another perspective guns are used for jobs therefore
they are registered and have a license.

Leadership Styles As A Public Administrator Essay
Introduction
This paper will discuss various aspects of a public leader. First, it will develop a brief overview of
two leaders and their leadership styles as a public administrator. Next, this paper will compare and
contrast the leadership styles of these two leaders. Also, it will determine three leadership
strengths and weaknesses of each of these leaders, as well as speculate on the effectiveness of
each public leader in terms of each of their successes. Finally, this paper will suggest one key
strength that could influence one s ability to be a public leader.
Examples of Charismatic Leaders
A fine example of a charismatic leader as a public administrator is Napoleon Bonaparte. As an
officer in the French army, he was smart, aggressive and fearless, and inspired great loyalty in just
about anyone he encountered. Additionally, his success was based on his instinctive knowledge of
human behavior, the most prominent of which was his ability to show appreciation to those who
helped him succeed through a rewards system. Furthermore, he realized it was imperative to win
the trust of those he was not leading to bolster their support. An avid speaker, he would inform
citizens in the country in which he was invading that he was not against them, but rather against
their tyrannical leaders. Eventually, Bonaparte s ego got the best of him, and he lost the respect he
had garnered over years, ending up exiled to the island of St. Helena (McManus, n.d., p. 2). Clearly,

Maryland V. King Case Study
Case Briefing Maryland v. King
I.Facts
The Maryland DNA Collection Act (MDCA) gave the state and police officers permission to
collect DNA specimens from people who are detained for a violent crime, an attempt to conduct a
violent crime, breaking and entering, or attempted to break and enter. Police arrested Alonzo Jay
King, Jr. was on first and second assault charges. While he was under arrest before his sentence,
King s DNA was collected and documented in Maryland s DNA file. King s DNA to matched a
rape case that was never solved. This evidence was the only evidence that ties King to the rape.
Furthermore, King went to trial and the judge sentenced him to life in prison.

V.Application/ Analysis
King appealed his case, stating that the Maryland DNA Collection Act violated the Fourth
Amendment, meaning he is secure from unreasonable searches and seizures. Maryland DNA
Collection Act is legitimate and the Fourth Amendment allows the police to have the right to draw
blood, and scrape underneath fingernails, and use a breathalyzer test for the lungs.
VI.Conclusion
The Court apprehended that conducting a DNA buccal test as a part of the arrest process and it
does not violate the Fourth Amendment because the test serves from a state that does not require a
warrant for a search. The Court apprehended that determining an arrestee s character and criminal
background is an essential part of the arrest process and that a DNA test is just as lawful as
fingerprinting. Determining a suspect s criminal background serves the legitimate state interest of
determining what level of risk the person positions in the community and what circumstances
should be established on his or her discharge from

Progressive Tax
Abstract
There has long been a debate about the progressive tax. Is it fair that the citizens who earn more
are taxed at a higher rate? Is it fair that those who do not make as much pay a smaller percentage
of taxes? This paper will discuss these questions along with the history of progressive tax. The
United States collects income from six different tax brackets that range anywhere from 10% to 35%
on an individual s taxable income.
Keywords: progressive tax, federal income taxes, ability to pay. In 1913, Congress levied a 1%
tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a six percent surtax on incomes above $500,000.
As the nation sought greater revenue to finance the World War I effort, the top rate of income tax
rose considerably. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Descartes: Week Three Question In Meditation six: Concerning the Existence of Material Things,
and the Real Distinction between Mind and Body, Rene Descartes wrote of his distinctions
between the mind and the body, first by reviewing all things that he believed to be true, then
assessing the causes and later calling them into doubt, and then finally by considering what he must
now believe. By analyzing Descartes writing, this paper will explicate Descartes view on bodies
and animals, and if animals have minds. Before explicating the answer to those questions, Descartes
distinctions between the mind and the body should first be summarized and explained. Descartes

Although animals act on many impulses and mechanisms, many animals have proven that they
have the ability to adapt and survive, showing that they have the ability to think of when they are
ill, or feel pain. Animals have the ability to survive illness and changing environments. If animals
only acted on mechanism, then they would exacerbate illness causing their demise, or they would
fail to adapt to the changing environments, causing them to become extinct. The survival of
species throughout years, proves that animals do not just act on mechanism, but also have a mind
that is tightly jointed . In conclusion, this paper has explained Descartes view on bodies and
animals, and analyzed whether Descartes believed that animals had minds. Explanation of
Descartes view of minds and bodies has been provided, indicating that he believed that the mind
and body were tightly jointed , as well as, his view of how the body would act without a mind.
From these explanations, we have been able to conclude and explain why that Descartes would
believe that animal do have minds. References Descartes, R., Cress, D. (1998). Discourse on

Cultural Imperialism And The United States
During my time in Guatemala, I believe that the social issues I came in the most contact with were
hegemony and cultural imperialism, or in other words, the influence the United States has over
Guatemala. No matter where I was, whether it be the streets of the small town of San Miguel or
the larger, more developed city of GuatemalaCity, I could not help but notice how much of an
impact the United Stateshas. Throughout the course of a month we learned a lot about the root
causes of poverty America as a hegemon through both readings and discussion. The footprint the
U.S. has left in Guatemala was apparent not only while reading and learning about the history of
Latin America, but while visiting the country itself. In addition, we had the... Show more content on

the U.S. Being from the U.S., this seems completely normal. The signs even looked very similar.
When I took a closer look at the signs, I noticed why they looked so similar. There were
American models on the signs. In particular, I noticed a blonde haired woman on the front of a
billboard advertising shampoo. I also noticed American women on billboards advertising jeans
and beer. When looking into bars I saw calendars with American women as well. It was impossible
not to notice the influence that the U.S. had not only on methods of advertising, but also on the
images used. In addition to noticing the U.S. hegemon while on the streets of Guatemala, I also
noticed it while living with the people. While staying with host families, we were given the
opportunity to take in an entirely different culture or so we thought. Even though living amongst
Guatemalans was a very new experience, it was also very evident that the U.S. had impacted the
traditional Guatemalan way of life. The first thing that I noticed while living with my host family

They had not let any outside influence impact their decision in clothing. However, my host siblings

Full Range Leadership
According to Bruce Avolio, What we have clearly learned is that leaders who can balance
transactional and transformational leadership across time, situations, and challenges are the most
effective (Avolio 2011, 49). People have a greater sense of ownership at the highest levels in
terms of identification and are willing to provide the extra effort needed to succeed (Avolio 2011,
49). Yet, Rusty Ricketson wrote, Those who embrace the followerfirst perspective are not
dependent on titles or positions in order to gain a sense of identity and worth. They understand that
good leaders are good followers (Ricketson 2014, 197). Although Avolio supports Full Range

There is observed conflict between Transactional Leaders and Following Leader, The Following
Leader seeks to raise the level of the leader follower relationship to one in which both leader and
follower are responding based upon a common desire to honor God (Ricketson 2014, 213).
Laissez faire leadership (LF) is the behavior of those individuals in a group who, in the extreme,
do not care what happens, avoid taking responsibility, cannot make up their minds, and are
satisfied to sit and wait for others to take the necessary initiatives imposed by the tasks at hand
(Avolio 2011, 55). In Full Range Leadership and Following Leader the LF is not an effective
approach. In terms of building the full range of leadership potential, how often you exhibit a
certain set of behaviors along the range ultimately determines how effective you are over time as a

Realism In The Slynx
Depiction of the post historical time in the Tolstaya s novel represents a perfect morally corrupt
world in need of a saviour. This degraded setting echoes the failed utopianism thinking of the early
post Soviet period, as according to Agren: it [The Slynx] is a reflection of the postmodern and late

Of Mice and Men Importance of Friendship George and Lennie
Of Mice and Men has many themes presented by Steinbeck, one of which is about friendship. The
novella shows the relationship between the protagonists, George and Lennie, and showing how they
try to achieve the American Dream by working together. This is in contrast to many of the other
characters who are alone by themselves which seems to be the norm at the time of the Great
Depression. The reader is able to look at how the need to have a companion is portrayed by
Steinbeck, especially during the harsh economic times that the story is set in.
The reliance that George and Lennie have on one another is able to emphasise on how it is only
the friendship between the two of them which allows them to survive. Lennie saying I got you to

Although most of the men have no true friends, they at least get to play cards and associate with
others. Lennie, because of the colour of his skin and his friendship with George, cannot possibly
understand Crooks plight. George chooses to kill Lennie at the novel s end, realizing that Lennie
could not stand the loneliness of being locked up in a prison or an asylum. This is also able to
highlight the true friendship which is separated at the end which also brings an end to the novella.
Thus the need for companionship, which is shown by other characters that are victimised within
society, is emphasised as other strive for what George and Lennie have.
Throughout the book Steinbeck uses many characters to emphasize a message which he wants
to get across to the reader. This is how the importance of being able to share a friend was vital
during the 1930 s as it was the time of the Depression era and everyone always needed someone
else to be with. This is what makes the true friendship between George and Lennie a key component

Porn and Censorship
Pornography and Censorship
Should the government be allowed to legitimately prohibit citizens from publishing or viewing
pornography, or would this be an unjustified violation of basic freedoms?
Traditionally, liberals defended the freedom of consenting adults to publish and consume
pornography in private from moral and religious conservatives who wanted pornography banned for
its obscenity, its corrupting impact on consumers and its corrosive effect on traditional family and
religious values. But, in more recent times, the pornography debate has taken on a somewhat new
and surprising shape. Some feminists have found themselves allied with their traditional
conservative foes in calling on the state to regulate or prohibit ... Show more content on

Other sexually explicit representations depict acts of violent coercion: people being bound,
whipped, beaten, tortured, penetrated by objects, mutilated, raped and even killed. Some sexually
explicit material may be degrading, without necessarily being overtly violent. This material depicts
people (most often women) in positions of servility and subordination in their sexual relations with
others, or engaged in sexual acts that many people would regard as humiliating. Some sexually
explicit material involves or depicts children. Some portrays bestiality and necrophilia; and so on.
On the first definition of pornography as sexually explicit material, all such material would count
as pornography, insofar as it is sexually explicit. But this simple definition is not quite right.
Anatomy textbooks for medical students are sexually explicit they depict exposed genitalia, for
example but are rarely, if ever, viewed as pornography. Sexual explicitness may be a necessary
condition for material to count as pornographic, but it does not seem to be sufficient. So something
needs to be added to the simple definition. What else might be required?
Here is a second definition. Pornography is sexually explicit material (verbal or pictorial) that is
primarily designed to produce sexual arousal in viewers. This definition is better: it deals with the
problem of anatomy textbooks and the like. Indeed, this

Christendom Sects
Although today one might recognize Christendom as having three main sects, this is not entirely
true. Within each mainstream denomination, there are countless subsects, each with their own
distinctive beliefs and practices. If one attempted to unite the all the groups, they would find it
incredibly difficult. Originally, Christendom was made of of one mainstream sect, Roman
Catholicism, and other sects united under its main ideas. In 1054, relations between the East and
the West Church rapidly deteriorated. Eventually, the Eastern Church would split from Roman
Catholicism to form a new sect of Christianity, Eastern Orthodoxy. Later, another sect,
Protestantism, would emerge after Martin Luther nailed a copy of his 95 Theses to the door of the
Wittenberg Castle church on October 31, 1517. There were several key differences between Roman
Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. Even after many other denominations of
Christendom had given up allegiance to the pope, the Roman Catholic population stayed faithful. In

Floyd Case Summary
In the case sub judice, the County introduced seventeen pieces of evidence to be relied upon by
the Board when rendering its decision. Floyd failed to object to the introduction of any of the
evidence entered against him so as to give the Board an opportunity decide upon his objections

Another weakness to Anderson s theory is that he negates the reality of some physical ailments
and instead attributes them to demonic forces. While this may be fact in some cases, this theory
is farfetched in my personal opinion. Even Anderson s example of Dee and her bout with MS is
questionable as he notes a few pages after describing her miraculous recovery after completing
his steps that some cases of MS are degenerative and some display symptoms which come and go
such as seemed the case with Dee (Anderson, 2000). This type of theory comes under scrutiny by
people outside of the Christian faith and makes Christians look like quacks since we believe that
some supernatural force, not scientifically proven, is responsible for physical ailments able to be
treated by medicine. While I feel that many components go into diagnosing physical and mental
ailments I am cautious about subscribing to a belief that could do a person more harm than
good. As a skeptic of Anderson s theory I must consider stories I have heard of Christians
refusing medical treatment because of a belief that God would treat their ailment and later
suffering greatly because of this belief. I believe that God is all powerful and has the ability to
cure disease, however, I also believe that God has allowed us to develop modern medicine to treat
very real physical ailments and we should be careful not to negate

Censorship In Young Adult Literature
While reading the assigned chapters of the textbook I found many points interesting and
informative. The first portion that caught my attention involved how to incorporate both young
adult literature and the classics into a curriculum. A very interesting metaphor was used to
describe why adolescents shouldn t read the classics. I was really able to relate to the idea of
how well written young adult literature can encourage students to read and can possibly lead to
reading the classics. I think that it is a great idea to pair a young adult book with a classic in
order to engage reading as well as help address certain points of the classic. This idea plays well
with how to encourage reluctant readers to want to read, which is the next point I will discuss.
A reluctant reader is something that most teachers will have to deal with at some point in their
career. It can be very difficult for some students to get into the habit of reading for pleasure, it is
also common for avid readers to be in a stage where they just do not want to read. This is a
situation that I can relate to very strongly seeing as I love to read but sometimes find myself in a
reading slump, where I struggle to motivate myself... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

librarians or teachers, find certain ideas and information dangerous or objectionable to readers.
People examine books, films, dramas, and television to determine and suppress information they
find offensive. These ideas are practiced by teachers and librarians when finding books for
adolescents to read. Books that involve offensive language, violence, sexism, or substance abuse are
often not considered to be appropriate for young adults, therefore they are not included in many

Health Care Services Service Services
At present, the services sector continues to experience increasingly large growth, which occupies a
privileged position in the country s economy. The health service is situated in this part because of
the essential services that it provides for individuals, community health and peoples. Furthermore,
the healthsituation in a community presents an understandable picture of the extent of economic,
social and cultural development, which is why countries aspire to make progress and to increase
interest in the services provided by health institutions.
Undoubtedly the health care service is facing an increasingly complex challenge regarding the
provision of high quality services. According to the complexity of health care services and systems,
exploring and explaining the availability, utilisation, costs, quality and accessibility; the delivery
and continuity of health care services is the key to informing government officials, health insurers,
health providers, and the public and decision makers on the subject of health related issues.
Therefore, deciding health care needs and providing correct reactions to them ought not to be just
the employment of specialists. Rather, it must include the cooperation of different specialists who
work with and in the health care system consistently (Ashworth et al., 1992).

In The Death of Honesty, William Damon raises the concern that current apathy towards increasing
dishonesty threatens democracy. In this essay taken from the online volume Endangered Virtues
published by the Hoover Institute in 2012, Damon initially concedes that there are situations where
lying could be considered acceptable. However, with that being acknowledged, he transitions to his
main premise that honesty is losing its importance in society and will lead to its downfall, and he
cites examples in politics, law, journalism, and business in contemporary society where dishonesty
is expected, and even, condoned. Damon finally directs his remarks pointedly at teachers and

14, 16). Throughout his essay, Damon parallels these arguments of logic along with emotion to

acceptance, to tolerance, and then, outrage in order to convince them of the urgency to espouse
to the virtue of honesty in a democratic society. Although he speaks of the need for compassion,
diplomacy and protection from unadulterated truth, he claims that no one is naive or surprised
their politicians are dishonest (par. 2, 3). Damon uses references to historical figures to invoke a
spiritual and patriotic response from the audience (par. 6). He refers to Gordon Hinkley s
descriptive passage as alarm sounding...a neglected virtue...and problematic status to extract a
response (par. 7). Damon presents a strong warning when he states that we are reaching a

amongst young people due to the inconsistent implementation of standards within schools (par. 11).
He goes on to use words like sympathize, excusable, motivate, encourage, vacillate, half hearted to
address the response to cheating in schools (par. 15,16,18, 20). He pulls on the heartstrings of his
audience when warning of the implication of our current moral decline on children in their formative

Ty Cobb
I am certain I can wrap up who Ty Cobb was in a few words. He was a man that had daddy issues
, as well as anger issues. However, he was also, from what I have read, a great baseball player.
Cobb seemed to be dedicated to the game, working hard on field as well as off field. Although, I
felt like that was more to do with his obsession to be the best or prove his self worth to his father.
Either way, his cruelty both on and off the field seemed to work for him and against him. The
players hazed him and from what I gathered were scared of him, as well as the owner wanting to
trade him, but unable to do so. He was intelligent, studying a pitcher s style and technique so he

Ty went on to become the youngest man to win a big league batting title, as well as winning 12 in
total within thirteen years. I would say he was definitely dedicated to baseball or maybe just his
success. As for his stance towards black, I imagine he was largely influenced by society s views
in the south. The south, for the most part during this time, was still against blacks and his
actions from the reading showed he was too. For instance, he stabbed a black hotel watchman
for no reason other than the man trying to do his job. To be fair, I would imagine that the Tigers
covering up the stabbing did nothing but make his attitude towards blacks even worse. Another
instance of his aggressiveness towards blacks was when a black groundskeeper tried to shake
his hand; Cobb tried to strangle him and the man s wife for trying to help her husband (Baseball,
2010). Considering his stance on blacks I am honestly not sure if he should be celebrated
historically for his accomplishments or vilified due to his actions towards black. The reason for
my uncertainty is due to the time frame his accomplishments and actions took place in. America
during his time still held a prejudice and racism towards blacks and Cobbs actions showed this.
He was also an accomplished baseball player (batting titles) and used many techniques on and off
field that baseball still uses today (training off season); therefore, he really cannot be forgotten
historically. For this reason, maybe Cobb should be both celebrated and

Taking a Look at Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an acquired demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS)
that typically is diagnosed in the second or third decade of life. Normally, nerves are enclosed in
myelin sheaths that help facilitate transmission of nerve impulses within the CNS and the
peripheral nervous system throughout the body. In patients with MS, the myelinsheath is damaged
and eventually degenerates, causing patches of scar tissue called plaques or lesions to occur
anywhere randomly on the myelin sheath (Ruto, 2013). This results in impaired nerve conductivity,
which interferes with message transmission between the brain and the other parts of the body. As a
result, impulse transmission is altered, distorted, short circuited, or completely absent. This
interference in impulse transmission creates muscle weakness, muscle imbalance, and possibly
muscle spasms with partial or complete paralysis. Multiple sclerosisalso can result in visual
impairment and alteration of cognitive abilities, as well as pain, numbness, or tingling sensations
(Ruto, 2013). MS affects about 400,000 persons in the USA and approximately 2.1 million
worldwide. The average age of onset is between 20 40 years, although it can also occur in young
children and in people aged 50 years and more. It is estimated that the direct and indirect healthcare
costs of MS in the United States result in approximately $35,000 spent per year per patient.

The Zoo Story by Edward Albee Essay
The Zoo Story by Edward Albee
In Edward Albee s play, The Zoo Story, Jerry tells Peter bizarre stories about people he has
encountered that influence his shallow and lonely existence, to demonstrate Albee s view that
society is unnecessarily consumed by indifference, unkindness, weakness, and emptiness. In an
attempt to cause Peter to realize that his own life is filled with emptiness and shallowness, Jerry
tells Peter about the lives of some of the people in his boarding house. He talks about the colored

Albee is commenting that people need to foster their inner selves in addition to what they allow
others to see on the outside.
Another interesting piece of information that Jerry presents to Peter about the colored queen is
that he always leaves the door open when he is plucking his eyebrows. Not only does this
reinforce the fact that he is self absorbed and materialistic, but it tells something about the inside
of his persona as well. The act of plucking one s eyebrows is quite painful, and the fact that he
leaves his door open when committing this act of self mutilation reflects the idea that he wants
society to be aware of his inner pain and strife. People are constantly looking for sympathy and
for others to tell them that everything will be all right. The colored queen is no different. He
wants people to be aware that he feels pain. Keeping his door open shows that he, like the rest
society, is crying out for help, and wants to be noticed and cared for.
While the colored queen represents the part of society that wallows in their own self pity, Albee
points out through the use of other minor characters that there are other ways of avoiding pain, and
dealing with that pain. The Puerto Rican family that lives in Jerry s building tries to escape pain
instead of dealing with it or looking for help. Their method is avoidance. They avoid pain by
constantly having fun. Jerry mentions that they entertain a lot, and it

Khakis Creative Writing
Khakis. The first time I heard this word, it struck me as something exotic. I immediately pictured
myself in untamed Africa, with its rolling deserts and open savannahs. I found myself fleeing
from ferocious lions, laden with fierce, golden manes, and whipping past small prairie dogs,
hidden in the sun dried grass. I sprinted across the path of an old acacia tree, just in time to look
back and watch the blistering African sun beginning to set, sending bright streaks of red and
orange, over the horizon and across the cloudless sky. I looked ahead and noticed a tent being
erected in the distance. I saw people shouting at me to hurry when, suddenly, the growling in my
ears grew louder and louder and then...laughter? Geez, Kevin! They re just pants! my friend
busted out laughing. What? Pants? Yea, everyone wears it here in New England, he replied, Hey,
you should get a pair! Suddenly, everything made sense. We were talking about pants. We were
talking about how I don t wear pants because I always wear shorts. As a child, my imagination has

There are many people that are overly serious and have little joy in their lives. It is truly a
tragedy. As children, these people once wore shorts and lived with an imagination as limitless
and boundless as the open, blue skies, but something happened when they pulled on a pair of
pants and grew up. Perhaps they once had a dream that they could be and do anything they
wanted, and the world trampled them down. Perhaps they once were silly and had fun, only to
get into trouble for acting up. I only know because I ve experienced it myself, we all have.
However, because of this, I will not let my imagination be taken away, and I will continue to

The Development Of Childhood Abuse Victims
THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDHOOD ABUSE VICTIMS 2
The Behavioral Development of Childhood Abuse Victims and How Their Children Are Affected
In 2015, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report containing the
following statistics: In 2013, approximately 3.9 million children in the United States were
reported to have been abused or mistreated. 52 states reported a total of 678,932 child victims of
abuse and neglect. Victims between the ages of birth to 1 year old had the highest rate of
victimization at 23.1 per 1,000 children of the same age in the national population. Neglect was the
most prevalent form of child abuse, with 79.5% of child victims being made to suffer it. Physical
abuse was the second most common form (18.0%). In 2013, a nationally estimated 1,520 children
died from abuse and neglect. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). When
reading these statistics, it is plain to see that the abuse and mistreatment of children is a critical
issue, not just in the United States, but globally. Much research has been conducted to determine
the general demographics of the perpetrators and the victims, common trends in cases of abuse that
could shed light on the psychology of the abusers and their victims, and how the abuse inflicted on
the victims affects their development into adulthood. In a report on the long term consequences of
child abuse and neglect, the Children s

The Functions And Mechanisms Of Homeostasis
The purpose of this report will be to examine the functions and mechanisms of homeostasis and
how this applies to osmotic regulation in humans. It will then explain the processes behind
osmotic regulation and discuss the significance of the system, including how it can be affected
by various conditions. Homeostasis refers to a series of processes that allow the body s internal
environment to maintain stability despite a fluctuating external environment. This occurs in all
living organisms in some way as it is necessary for life. Some of the factors affected by
homeostasis are temperature, glucose levels, water levels, pH level and blood pressure, among
many others. The reason homeostasis is necessary for life depends on the factor being affected.
Usually (at least in the case of temperature and pH) the factors have an influence on how
effective the enzymes in the body are. Enzymes are natural catalysts that speed up processes in
the body that rely on chemical reactions. This includes respiration which allows us to generate
energy. Enzymes work by having a part called the active site which carries out the enzyme s task.
When an enzyme is exposed to temperatures that are too high the active site will become damaged
and the enzyme will denature. However if they are too cold then the speed at which they are able to
work will slow down. Because enzymes are responsible for so many important functions this means
they need to be kept at the optimum environmental range, hence why

Common Cold Recovery
The runny nose, the painfully scratchy throat, and clammy body are all common symptoms of
the common cold, a sickness that almost everyone has experienced in their lifetime. A cough
heard in the cold weather is normal and even expected, but what if one never had to deal with
problems like these again? Or if they did only have them with a fraction of the severity and a
much quicker recovery time? By following three simple and very effective steps, one can
recover more quickly from a cold and possibly avoid catching one altogether. Some of the best
ways include following certain, specific hygienic protocols, eating the proper, nutrient rich foods,
and most importantly of all, resting. First, we all must remember to be clean, which includes
washing one s hands regularly. By washing hands regularly using warm water, soap, and a little
elbow grease, one can easily prevent days of sickness, save dozens of tissues from being used, and
even spare the person using... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our bodies are outstandingly complex and capable of doing extraordinary things. Many of these
things happen while we sleep, such as the encoding long term memories. The repair of tissues and
damaged cells also takes place while a human is resting. The common cold is a viral infection, and
once it fights its way into our bodies, begins the task of injecting its own DNA into our cells, not
only reproducing and growing, but changing the original nucleotide sequence of a cell into
something new and deadly. Our bodies then attack these viral cells with the white blood cells,
causing our bodies to kill these infectious invaders. Sleeping allows the body to repair the tissues
that are damaged due to this process leading to a quicker recovery. Resting and staying home while
exhibiting symptoms also helps prevent the disease from spreading around to hundreds of other

Storytelling In Storytelling
Besides art based on nature, storytelling is the heart of Waldorf education. Children under seven
years are introduced to fairy tales and nature stories. As they progress to an elementary stage, they
are introduced to folk fairy tales where they learn about diverse cultures, fables which teaches them
moral values, and folk fairy tales about ancient times and historical events These stories form the
basis of basic education.
As identified earlier, Waldorf educationemphasizes developmental learning. Children are not
introduced to formal learning until elementary class at age 6 7. Pre school pedagogy emphasizes
imagination and imitation of practical activities. The imitation approach aims at informing the child
of the notion that the world is a perfect place (Ullrich, 2014). Thus, the educational approach
emphasizes holistic conduct, character, and personality among the teacher and the environment. Pre
school children are discouraged from using technology until elementary with the belief that it
conflicts with the developmental process of a child (Woods and Glenys, 2006). At this
developmental stage, children are using their power of imagination to learn and technology such as
Television can expose them to unhealthy content. Besides formal learning, early stages of
elementary curriculum continue to nurture imagination. Formal learning involves reading, writing,
artwork, and handwork. The academic subjects in elementary grades are introduced through
storytelling.

Fragmentation In The Great Gatsby
It seems nearly impossible to go through life without hearing that money cannot buy you happiness.
However, if anyone was offered an extra ten thousand dollars to their annual salary, he/she would be
considered foolish not to accept. Even though many people recognize the destructive potential of
money, he/she still pursues it. The Great Gatsbydemonstrates the results of this contradiction:
dissatisfaction and loss. Objectively the Roaring 20 s was a period of great prosperity, yet F. Scott
Fitzgeraldand other writers recognized the underlying despair that accompanied this new post war
wealth. While people s financial situations were more secure than ever, their personal lives were
more turbulent. Fitzgerald s use of imagery, fragmented... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Fitzgerald frequently uses em dashes and ellipses in order to create pauses and
breaks throughout the novel. This is especially prevalent whenever Gatsby or another character
retells a story. For instance, within the same chapter, Nick goes from eating lunch with Gatsby to
recalling a story that Jordan told about Daisy. However, he narrates the past like it is his own
experience even though he admits that Jordan Baker told him that afternoon while sitting up very
straight on a straight chair (Fitzgerald 79). This abrupt transition and bizarre narration choice both
contribute to initial disorientation of the reader. In addition, while Nick is narrating, he leaves out
sizeable chunks of time. For example, Nick says that he gave the impression that the events of
several weeks apart were all that absorbed me. On the contrary they were merely casual events...
[and] they absorbed me infinitely less than my personal affairs (Fitzgerald 60 61). By extension, he
clearly acknowledges that he withholds a significant portion of his summer during the novel.
Through Nick s strange and selective narration style, Fitzgerald channels the baffling essence of a
dream. Though this stylistically seems like a strange decision, it captures the same confusion that
post war Americans experienced during the Roaring

Development of a Lab-on-a-Chip Device to Detect DNA Double...
Proposal Summary
We propose to develop a lab on a chip device for the detection of DNA double strand breaks in
situ. Current technology requires laborious manipulation of the cell sample by fixation and staining
with antibody and an optical based detection. All in all, the process may take up to several days
before results are retrieved. The development of an on site, immediate monitoring system will
greatly benefit our understanding of DNA damage causes and prevention as well assessment of
radiation risk by tracking such events instantaneously. Our proposed device is based on
individually addressable carbon nanotube (CNT) array capable of multiplexing for detection of
multiple analytes and targets from a biological sample. The impact of this device in our
information based world is manifold. Not only will the device make it accessible for the user to
track, assess and follow trends of their own DNA damage levels but also empowers the user in
making more informed lifestyle choices. Introduction
With rising urbanization, the DNA in our cells is increasingly being exposed to DNA damaging
agents such as UV light, mutagenic chemicals, reactive oxygen species generated by Ionizing
Radiation (IR) or redox cycling by heavy metal ions and radio mimetic drugs etc. DNA Double
strand breaks (DSBs) occur when reactive oxygen species react with DNA bases causing lesions
in the chromosomes and the formation of foci known as Radiation induced foci (RFI). RFI are

Essay On Joint Executors
Joint Executors for Pennsylvania Estates
One decision that must be made when drafting your Will, is who to name as Executor of the Estate.
An Executor is an individual, named in the Will, who will administer the estate. This involves
everything from opening an estate checking account and paying the final debts of the estate
(funeral bills, final utility bills, etc.) to making sure the beneficiaries receive the assets of the
decedent.
As the Testator, you can name two people, as Joint Executors, to administer the estate. There can be
some benefits as well as pit falls to this approach, and the right decision will vary depending on your
family and financial situation. Appointing more than one Executor can help to spread out the duties
required of the Executor. This can be particularly beneficial for Executors who have full time
careers or obligation which make it difficult to find time to fulfil their estate administration duties.
Another advantage of Joint Executors is that the Testator can assure the executors have the
necessary financial expertise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many decisions to be made by the Executor such as how to value assets for estate tax
purposes, when and how to pay those taxes, and when to make distributions to beneficiaries.
Each decision required by joint Executors increases the potential for disagreements and can lead
to disagreements. Also consider that in Pennsylvania, an Executor may be held liable for actions
taken on behalf of the estate. While an Executor may not be held liable for the actions taken by
their Co Executor, they may be required to make a claim against the Co Executor to protect the
estate, or risk liability. Pennsylvania allows Executors to take a reasonable fee for the
administration of the estate. Often when children act as Executors they waive this fee. Joint
Executors may disagree on whether a fee should be taken or how it should be

The Dark Knight Figures In The Dark Knight Rises

(WORKING TITLE) Batman s duality as hero and hazard reflect how the capitalism present in
America is both the problem and solution. As the third installment in the Batman trilogy, a different
tone is used when the hero is introduced in the beginning scene. In the preceding films, the hero has
been seen righting wrongs and serving justice by banishing the manipulative, toxic and evil villains
Gotham is infested with. In the opening scene of The Dark Knight Rises, Commissioner Gordon
delivers a speech to honor the late Harvey Dent, former Gotham mayor, and his major contribution
in ridding the city s criminal activity. Dent was a symbol of hope and restoration from the economic
decline Gotham faced and the gang activity that terrorized the streets. Batman 2: The Dark Knight
introduced the villainous Joker and his psychotic madness which led to Dent s own decline when
the madman kills Dent s lover. This sparked Dent s own madness and list of homicides. Wanting to
preserve the hope Dent instilled onto the people and prevent chaos, Batman takes the blame for
Dent s transgression. And so, begins the duality of Batman.
Batman is the alter ego of wealthy and successful business man, Bruce Wayne. Wayne s parents
were tragically murdered right in front of him when he was young by an armed robber. This was
the moment Wayne took an oath to himself that he would rid his city of the injustice and crime that

History Of Wrestling Essay
Wrestling represents one of the oldest forms of combat. The origins of wrestling goes back 15,000
years through cave drawings in France. Here are the four old types of wrestling. Greco Roman
wrestling soon became prestigious in continental Europe and was the first style registered at the
modern Olympic Games, beginning in Athens in 1896 with one heavyweight bout, and grew in
popularity during the 20th century. Another form of wrestling is freestyle wrestling. Freestyle is a
style of amateur wrestlingthat is practiced throughout the world. Along with Greco Roman, it is
one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic games. Folkstyle wrestling started when

Minimum Wage Thesis Statement
The issue of poverty in America is a growing controversial topic that affects millions of Americans.
American citizens are poor and work as much as they can but continuously go in and out of poverty.
Very few impoverished Americans have little or no work on a continuous basis, but they tend to
stay poor from one generation to the next. Due to the current system of economy and the United
Statesincreases in poverty, the American people are in need of a change. The New York Times
Editorial Board informs readers and argues that raising the minimum wage would restore the lives
of millions of Americans. In the Editorial Board s article The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage
they discuss how Republicans perceive the minimum wage in a negative light, the minimum wage
is viewed as the lowest legal hourly rate (Editorial Board 2). However, the Editorial Board explains
the minimum wage is an economic security blanket for millions of Americans. The editorial Board
supports their claim that the perception of minimum wage is skewed due to politics by
implementing relevant expert opinions and fairly referencing and rebutting counterarguments,
which forms a reasonable, credible, and believable argument.
Throughout The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage , the Editorial Board references numerous
experts to validate their claim that the minimum wage is unfairly set. Therefore, the Editorial Board

History of Ballet Essay
The History of Ballet
The first experience of watching a ballet, for me or any little girl, can be fascinating and
exhilarating. Wondering how a dancer can be so steady on her toes as she spins in circles and
leaps through the air. Watching a ballet, there is a feeling of wanting to be graceful, as well as the
warm sensation felt by a little girl as she slips into dream land. My mom had taken me to my first
ballet when I was 11 years old. When we returned home home, she signed me up for classes at the
local dance center. The expectations to become a prima ballerina would involve much hard work
and concentration. I knew when I started it would take years of steady practice and commitment.

The history of ballet dates back to the 18th century starting with Baroque dance. Fabritio Caroso da

died around 1605 1620. His dance manual quot;Ballarino quot; was published in 1581, with a
subsequent edition, significantly different, NobiltГ de dame, printed in 1600 and again after his
death in 1630. In the 19th century there was the pre romantic, romantic and the classical ballets.
Anthony Tudor deserves an honorable mention for his choreography and teaching. Pre romantic
ballet occurred sometime circa ?? up to 1831. The romantic period covered the early to mid 1800

again. Before you can decide if an apology is sincere or not you must learn the characteristics of a
true apology. The goal of an apologyis to communicate regret, responsibility, and remedy of the
issue. To effectively do this you must make a statement of regret for causing the inconvenience,

Stanford Experiment Vs Holocaust Experiment
Both the Stanford and Holocaust experiments are psychological experiments that were conducted
in order to realize the behavior of the prisoners and the prison guards when they are in prison and
the kind of psychological and physical treatments that the guards offer to the prisoners.
The Stanford prison experiment took place in the year 1971. In this experiment young men were
used whereby, they were divided into the roles if the guards and the prisoners. Both were put in an
environment that resembles a prison at Stanford of university. On the other hand Holocaust

The holocaust experiment advocates that there is need for redefinition of cultural values in order to

  • 4. Overview of the Fall Prevention Program The Fall Prevention Program Executive Summary The Purpose of the Program According to the Joint Commission Resources JCR (2005), there is no universally accepted definition of a fall. Thus several definitions have been floated over time in an attempt to define the same. One such definition of a fall is an untoward event that results in the patient or resident coming to rest unintentionally on the ground or another lower surface (Joint Commission Resources, 2005). Falls are regarded common causes of injury at every age. However, it is important to note that for seniors, falls can have serious consequences. This is more so the case given that a fall can bring about pain, trauma, or even death. With that in mind, the primary purpose of this program remains the reduction of falls and hence the aversion of related injuries amongst the concerned patients. Of key importance remains the identification of patients who appear to be at high risk of falling. This way, appropriate strategies can be developed to reduce the injuries related to inpatient falls. The Target Population/Audience According to the Joint Commission Resources (2005), falls are the В¦primary etiology of accidental deaths in persons over the age of 65. However, it is important to note that in the opinion of JCR, the injury rate happens to be highest amongst those aged 85 years and above. To highlight the seriousness of the issue, the commission further points out that the number of deaths associated with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Bear, Lion s Digestive System A similarity that is present between the bear, lion, and koalas digestive system is that they all have small intestines. In all of the animals digestive system they have small intestine which absorbs all the nutrients and minerals from the food that they have eaten. Small intestine, or small bowel, is a hollow tube about 20 feet long that runs from the stomachto the beginning of the large intestine. The small intestinebreaks down food from the stomach and absorbs much of the nutrients from the food. The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. The main role of the duodenum is to complete the first phase of digestion. In this section of the intestine, food from the stomach is mixed with enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the gallbladder. The enzymes and bile help break down food. The jejunum is the second part of the small intestine. After food is broken down in the duodenum, it moves to the jejunum, where the inside walls absorb the food s nutrients. The inside walls of the jejunum have many circular folds, which make its surface area large enough to absorb all of the nutrients that the body needs. The ileum is the third part of the small intestine. It absorbs bile acids, which are returned to the liver to be made into more bile, then stored in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The oesophagus is a muscular tube, about 25cm long, with a sphincter (valve) at each end. Its function is to transport food and fluid, after being swallowed, from the mouth to the stomach. No absorption of nutrients takes place in the oesophagus. A mouthful of food which has been chewed and swallowed is called a bolus. This is propelled from the pharynx (throat) into the oesophagus, and is swept towards the stomach in peristaltic waves. These muscular contractions are involuntary, and cannot normally be felt. • 6. Summary Of Edwidge Danticat s Breath, Eyes, Memory In Breath, Eyes, Memory, Edwidge Danticat explores the conflict that exist between Sophie and her mother, Martine. Sophie states, There s a difference between what a person wants and what s good for them (Danticat 72) because what Sophie wants for herself is different than what her mother believes is good for her. Martine s belief of what is good for her daughter are based on her own life experiences and what she has learned from them. Danticat makes it clear in the text that Martine believes Sophie should study and have a passion for becoming a doctor in the future and she is to remain a virgin until marriage. However, Sophie does not exactly follow the guidelines of what her mother believes to be good for her. Sophie does what she wants as she longs to live in Providence so she can put her mother s horrifying past behind her.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her mother informs her right away that she is going to work very hard here. Martine plans for Sophie show that she wants to live out what were once her dreams through her daughter. This is supported when Martine states you have a chance to become the kind of women Tanta Atie and I have always wanted to be. If you make something of yourself in life, we will succeed. You can raise our heads (Danticat 44). Danticat further supports this when Sophie is first introduced to Marc. He offers to take Martine and Sophie to dinner at a Haitian restaurant. While they are there Marc asks Sophie what she has planned for her future. She announces that she would like to become a secretary one day, but her mother declares that she is too young you are going to be a doctor (Danticat 56). • 7. Essay on Why the American Civil War Lasted for Longer Than... Why the American Civil War lasted for longer than 90 days The North had expected their war with the south to last for no more than 90 days. They not only had more men up in the north but they had more resources as well. Now why couldn t they defeat the south? I have to say it is due to the incompetence of the north s generals commanding the army, and the army itself. On April 15, 1861, President Lincoln called on the states to provide 75,000 militia men for 90 days to put down the rebellion of the south. On the other hand, the south had the state of Virginia on its side; this gave them a better chance of victory. It was the home of Robert E. Lee, a brave leader who had been Lincoln s choice for commanding the union army. When Virginia... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The union went completely unprepared into this war. Where as the confederate soldiers were country men who were used to the outdoors and were skilled in firing guns. The first major battle of the Civil War was fought in Virginia, near the Manassas; this battle later became known as The Battle of Bull Run. At the beginning of the five hour battle the Union soldiers had the Confederates on the retreat, except for one brigade commanded by General Jackson. Due to Jackson s ability to hold his ground and his stubbornness, the men saw him and his militia to resemble a stone wall; hence he earned the nickname Stonewall Jackson. Thanks to Jackson the Confederates were able to hold out until General Johnston showed up with 9000 reinforcements to help out General Beauregard. The arrival changed the course of the battle and soon the Union soldiers were fleeing back to Washington. However, because of the disorganization of Beauregard s army, they could not pursue McDowell any further. Rico 3 The battle proved that this was not going to be a one sided war for either side, as was predicted. The casualties soared to 2,900 killed, wounded, captured, or missing for McDowell s army and 2,000 for Beauregard s. The battle spurred a sense of victory in the South, pushing them on, and in the North a feeling for revenge. If the union had simply prepared their army for battle rather than just jump into a war, they probably would have won the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Leadership Styles As A Public Administrator Essay Introduction This paper will discuss various aspects of a public leader. First, it will develop a brief overview of two leaders and their leadership styles as a public administrator. Next, this paper will compare and contrast the leadership styles of these two leaders. Also, it will determine three leadership strengths and weaknesses of each of these leaders, as well as speculate on the effectiveness of each public leader in terms of each of their successes. Finally, this paper will suggest one key strength that could influence one s ability to be a public leader. Examples of Charismatic Leaders A fine example of a charismatic leader as a public administrator is Napoleon Bonaparte. As an officer in the French army, he was smart, aggressive and fearless, and inspired great loyalty in just about anyone he encountered. Additionally, his success was based on his instinctive knowledge of human behavior, the most prominent of which was his ability to show appreciation to those who helped him succeed through a rewards system. Furthermore, he realized it was imperative to win the trust of those he was not leading to bolster their support. An avid speaker, he would inform citizens in the country in which he was invading that he was not against them, but rather against their tyrannical leaders. Eventually, Bonaparte s ego got the best of him, and he lost the respect he had garnered over years, ending up exiled to the island of St. Helena (McManus, n.d., p. 2). Clearly, ... Is it fair that those who do not make as much pay a smaller percentage of taxes? This paper will discuss these questions along with the history of progressive tax. The United States collects income from six different tax brackets that range anywhere from 10% to 35% on an individual s taxable income. Keywords: progressive tax, federal income taxes, ability to pay. In 1913, Congress levied a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a six percent surtax on incomes above $500,000. Descartes Week 3 Descartes: Week Three Question In Meditation six: Concerning the Existence of Material Things, and the Real Distinction between Mind and Body, Rene Descartes wrote of his distinctions between the mind and the body, first by reviewing all things that he believed to be true, then assessing the causes and later calling them into doubt, and then finally by considering what he must now believe. By analyzing Descartes writing, this paper will explicate Descartes view on bodies and animals, and if animals have minds. Before explicating the answer to those questions, Descartes distinctions between the mind and the body should first be summarized and explained. Although animals act on many impulses and mechanisms, many animals have proven that they have the ability to adapt and survive, showing that they have the ability to think of when they are ill, or feel pain. Animals have the ability to survive illness and changing environments. If animals only acted on mechanism, then they would exacerbate illness causing their demise, or they would fail to adapt to the changing environments, causing them to become extinct. The survival of species throughout years, proves that animals do not just act on mechanism, but also have a mind that is tightly jointed . In conclusion, this paper has explained Descartes view on bodies and animals, and analyzed whether Descartes believed that animals had minds. Explanation of Descartes view of minds and bodies has been provided, indicating that he believed that the mind and body were tightly jointed , as well as, his view of how the body would act without a mind. • 15. Cultural Imperialism And The United States During my time in Guatemala, I believe that the social issues I came in the most contact with were hegemony and cultural imperialism, or in other words, the influence the United States has over Guatemala. No matter where I was, whether it be the streets of the small town of San Miguel or the larger, more developed city of GuatemalaCity, I could not help but notice how much of an impact the United Stateshas. Throughout the course of a month we learned a lot about the root causes of poverty America as a hegemon through both readings and discussion. The footprint the U.S. has left in Guatemala was apparent not only while reading and learning about the history of Latin America, but while visiting the country itself. In addition, we had the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As you walk or drive through Guatemala, you are sure to see countless billboards, much like in the U.S. Being from the U.S., this seems completely normal. The signs even looked very similar. When I took a closer look at the signs, I noticed why they looked so similar. There were American models on the signs. In particular, I noticed a blonde haired woman on the front of a billboard advertising shampoo. I also noticed American women on billboards advertising jeans and beer. When looking into bars I saw calendars with American women as well. It was impossible not to notice the influence that the U.S. had not only on methods of advertising, but also on the images used. In addition to noticing the U.S. hegemon while on the streets of Guatemala, I also noticed it while living with the people. While staying with host families, we were given the opportunity to take in an entirely different culture or so we thought. Even though living amongst Guatemalans was a very new experience, it was also very evident that the U.S. had impacted the traditional Guatemalan way of life. Anatomy textbooks for medical students are sexually explicit they depict exposed genitalia, for example but are rarely, if ever, viewed as pornography. The first portion that caught my attention involved how to incorporate both young adult literature and the classics into a curriculum. Although he speaks of the need for compassion, diplomacy and protection from unadulterated truth, he claims that no one is naive or surprised their politicians are dishonest (par. 2, 3). Damon uses references to historical figures to invoke a spiritual and patriotic response from the audience (par. 6). He refers to Gordon Hinkley s descriptive passage as alarm sounding...a neglected virtue...and problematic status to extract a response (par. 7). Damon presents a strong warning when he states that we are reaching a dysfunctional tipping point when honesty becomes the loser s way of operating, and lying is tolerated (par. 8 9). He also advances that it is most troubling that there is current lack of honesty amongst young people due to the inconsistent implementation of standards within schools (par. 11). He goes on to use words like sympathize, excusable, motivate, encourage, vacillate, half hearted to address the response to cheating in schools (par. 15,16,18, 20). • 36. Ty Cobb I am certain I can wrap up who Ty Cobb was in a few words. He was a man that had daddy issues , as well as anger issues. However, he was also, from what I have read, a great baseball player. Cobb seemed to be dedicated to the game, working hard on field as well as off field. Although, I felt like that was more to do with his obsession to be the best or prove his self worth to his father. Either way, his cruelty both on and off the field seemed to work for him and against him. The players hazed him and from what I gathered were scared of him, as well as the owner wanting to trade him, but unable to do so. He was intelligent, studying a pitcher s style and technique so he could have an advantage and using intimidation; teams still do this today.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ty went on to become the youngest man to win a big league batting title, as well as winning 12 in total within thirteen years. I would say he was definitely dedicated to baseball or maybe just his success. As for his stance towards black, I imagine he was largely influenced by society s views in the south. The south, for the most part during this time, was still against blacks and his actions from the reading showed he was too. For instance, he stabbed a black hotel watchman for no reason other than the man trying to do his job. To be fair, I would imagine that the Tigers covering up the stabbing did nothing but make his attitude towards blacks even worse. Another instance of his aggressiveness towards blacks was when a black groundskeeper tried to shake his hand; Cobb tried to strangle him and the man s wife for trying to help her husband (Baseball, 2010). Considering his stance on blacks I am honestly not sure if he should be celebrated historically for his accomplishments or vilified due to his actions towards black. The reason for my uncertainty is due to the time frame his accomplishments and actions took place in. America during his time still held a prejudice and racism towards blacks and Cobbs actions showed this. He was also an accomplished baseball player (batting titles) and used many techniques on and off field that baseball still uses today (training off season); therefore, he really cannot be forgotten historically. For this reason, maybe Cobb should be both celebrated and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Taking a Look at Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an acquired demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that typically is diagnosed in the second or third decade of life. Normally, nerves are enclosed in myelin sheaths that help facilitate transmission of nerve impulses within the CNS and the peripheral nervous system throughout the body. In patients with MS, the myelinsheath is damaged and eventually degenerates, causing patches of scar tissue called plaques or lesions to occur anywhere randomly on the myelin sheath (Ruto, 2013). This results in impaired nerve conductivity, which interferes with message transmission between the brain and the other parts of the body. As a result, impulse transmission is altered, distorted, short circuited, or completely absent. This interference in impulse transmission creates muscle weakness, muscle imbalance, and possibly muscle spasms with partial or complete paralysis. Multiple sclerosisalso can result in visual impairment and alteration of cognitive abilities, as well as pain, numbness, or tingling sensations (Ruto, 2013). MS affects about 400,000 persons in the USA and approximately 2.1 million worldwide. The average age of onset is between 20 40 years, although it can also occur in young children and in people aged 50 years and more. It is estimated that the direct and indirect healthcare costs of MS in the United States result in approximately $35,000 spent per year per patient. Multiple sclerosis affects women more ... In an attempt to cause Peter to realize that his own life is filled with emptiness and shallowness, Jerry tells Peter about the lives of some of the people in his boarding house. Albee is commenting that people need to foster their inner selves in addition to what they allow others to see on the outside. Another interesting piece of information that Jerry presents to Peter about the colored queen is that he always leaves the door open when he is plucking his eyebrows. Not only does this reinforce the fact that he is self absorbed and materialistic, but it tells something about the inside of his persona as well. The act of plucking one s eyebrows is quite painful, and the fact that he leaves his door open when committing this act of self mutilation reflects the idea that he wants society to be aware of his inner pain and strife. People are constantly looking for sympathy and for others to tell them that everything will be all right. The colored queen is no different. He wants people to be aware that he feels pain. Keeping his door open shows that he, like the rest society, is crying out for help, and wants to be noticed and cared for. While the colored queen represents the part of society that wallows in their own self pity, Albee points out through the use of other minor characters that there are other ways of avoiding pain, and dealing with that pain. The Puerto Rican family that lives in Jerry s building tries to escape pain instead of dealing with it or looking for help. Their method is avoidance. They avoid pain by constantly having fun. The Development Of Childhood Abuse Victims THE DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDHOOD ABUSE VICTIMS 2 The Behavioral Development of Childhood Abuse Victims and How Their Children Are Affected In 2015, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released a report containing the following statistics: In 2013, approximately 3.9 million children in the United States were reported to have been abused or mistreated. 52 states reported a total of 678,932 child victims of abuse and neglect. Victims between the ages of birth to 1 year old had the highest rate of victimization at 23.1 per 1,000 children of the same age in the national population. Neglect was the most prevalent form of child abuse, with 79.5% of child victims being made to suffer it. Physical abuse was the second most common form (18.0%). In 2013, a nationally estimated 1,520 children died from abuse and neglect. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2015). When reading these statistics, it is plain to see that the abuse and mistreatment of children is a critical issue, not just in the United States, but globally. Much research has been conducted to determine the general demographics of the perpetrators and the victims, common trends in cases of abuse that could shed light on the psychology of the abusers and their victims, and how the abuse inflicted on the victims affects their development into adulthood. • 44. The Functions And Mechanisms Of Homeostasis The purpose of this report will be to examine the functions and mechanisms of homeostasis and how this applies to osmotic regulation in humans. It will then explain the processes behind osmotic regulation and discuss the significance of the system, including how it can be affected by various conditions. Homeostasis refers to a series of processes that allow the body s internal environment to maintain stability despite a fluctuating external environment. This occurs in all living organisms in some way as it is necessary for life. Some of the factors affected by homeostasis are temperature, glucose levels, water levels, pH level and blood pressure, among many others. The reason homeostasis is necessary for life depends on the factor being affected. Usually (at least in the case of temperature and pH) the factors have an influence on how effective the enzymes in the body are. Enzymes are natural catalysts that speed up processes in the body that rely on chemical reactions. This includes respiration which allows us to generate energy. Enzymes work by having a part called the active site which carries out the enzyme s task. When an enzyme is exposed to temperatures that are too high the active site will become damaged and the enzyme will denature. However if they are too cold then the speed at which they are able to work will slow down. Because enzymes are responsible for so many important functions this means they need to be kept at the optimum environmental range, hence why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As they progress to an elementary stage, they are introduced to folk fairy tales where they learn about diverse cultures, fables which teaches them moral values, and folk fairy tales about ancient times and historical events These stories form the basis of basic education. As identified earlier, Waldorf educationemphasizes developmental learning. Children are not introduced to formal learning until elementary class at age 6 7. Pre school pedagogy emphasizes imagination and imitation of practical activities. The imitation approach aims at informing the child of the notion that the world is a perfect place (Ullrich, 2014). Thus, the educational approach emphasizes holistic conduct, character, and personality among the teacher and the environment. Pre school children are discouraged from using technology until elementary with the belief that it conflicts with the developmental process of a child (Woods and Glenys, 2006). At this developmental stage, children are using their power of imagination to learn and technology such as Television can expose them to unhealthy content. However, he narrates the past like it is his own experience even though he admits that Jordan Baker told him that afternoon while sitting up very straight on a straight chair (Fitzgerald 79). Current technology requires laborious manipulation of the cell sample by fixation and staining with antibody and an optical based detection. All in all, the process may take up to several days before results are retrieved. The development of an on site, immediate monitoring system will greatly benefit our understanding of DNA damage causes and prevention as well assessment of radiation risk by tracking such events instantaneously. Our proposed device is based on individually addressable carbon nanotube (CNT) array capable of multiplexing for detection of multiple analytes and targets from a biological sample. The impact of this device in our information based world is manifold.
