There are four main tissue types: muscle, nervous, connective, and epithelial tissue. Connective tissue is made up of macromolecules like proteoglycans and fibrillar proteins that form the extracellular matrix (ECM). Proteoglycans are protein cores with glycosaminoglycan chains that attract water and give tissues flexibility. Collagen is the main fibrillar protein and comes in types I-III that provide structure and strength on the ECM. Fibronectin also interacts with collagen and cell surfaces to organize the ECM.
