Verb + infinitive
A lot of verbs are
often followed by a
second verb in its
infinitive form.
Example:
I want to join the
English club.

want – agree – ask
– choose – decide
– expect – hope –
promise
Verb + -ing
A lot of verbs are
often followed by a
second verb in its –
ing.
Example:
They give up trying.

give up – avoid – consider –
delay – enjoy – feel like –
finish – (not) mind – practise
– suggest
A lot of verbs are followed
by either an infinitive or an
–ing form with no change of
meaning
start – begin – can’t bear – continue –
hate – intend – like – love – prefer
Note!
There is an important difference between :
a) I hate / I like / I love (= always)
b) I’d hate / I’d like / I’d love / I’d prefer
(= a feeling about a particular situation)
I’d like to go to the cinema this evening.
I’d hate to be ill as often as Mona is.
No body can go back and start a new
beginning, but anyone can start today
and make a new ending.
