Rural population in Pakistan was last measured at 63% of the total population in 2010 according to the World Bank. The rural population has declined from 69.4% in 1990 to 63% in 2010 as the urban population has grown. Retirement age is becoming less defined as more people choose to continue working for as long as possible or perform volunteer work worth $3.1 billion annually in Canada. Livestock is an important part of Pakistan's agriculture and rural economy, contributing over 50% to the value added in agriculture and 12% to exports. Goats and poultry are significant indigenous livestock, with goats numbering over 60 million.

Livelihood includes people, their capabilities and their means of living- food, income and assets. Each village in the state unique in social structure, resource base and livelihood pattern. Rural households augment their income from non-farm sources; however, varies across different categories of households.
Shahid Khan is the founder and CEO of the Indus Earth Trust, a development project which is based in Pakistan. In this interview he talks about his work helping people to build their own earthquake proof house, start their own business, and become an autonomous agent in the local economy. Starting the informal interview out with questioning me, Alex Dunedin, about the Ragged University project, he then goes on to talking about his experience of trying to get people to adopt sustainable development techniques which take account of the cost to the environment.
