There are three levels of questions that can be asked about a text: 1) On-the-line questions that test literal comprehension and facts stated directly in the text. 2) Between-the-lines questions that require inferring answers by combining details from the text. 3) Beyond-the-lines questions that assess higher-order thinking by asking students to apply their prior knowledge to the text. Teachers should aim to encourage both between-and beyond-the-lines questions to promote deeper analysis than simple fact recall.
