Six Australian colonies formed a federation on January 1, 1901 with Sir Edmund Barton as the first Prime Minister. Attempts at federation in the 1850s and 1860s failed due to lack of popular support. While Fiji and New Zealand were initially planned to be part of the federation, they ultimately decided not to join. Australia is both the largest island and smallest continent.
